युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
किमर्थं सहसा विन्ध्यः प्रवृद्धः क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण महामुने ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kimarthaṁ sahasā vindhyaḥ pravṛddhaḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ ,
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ vistareṇa mahāmune.
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca kimartham sahasā vindhyaḥ pravṛddhaḥ
krodhamūrcitaḥ etat icchāmi aham śrotum vistareṇa mahāmune
1. Yudhishthira said: 'O great sage, I desire to hear in detail why the Vindhya mountain suddenly grew, overwhelmed by anger.'
लोमश उवाच ।
अद्रिराजं महाशैलं मरुं कनकपर्वतम् ।
उदयास्तमये भानुः प्रदक्षिणमवर्तत ॥२॥
2. lomaśa uvāca ,
adrirājaṁ mahāśailaṁ maruṁ kanakaparvatam ,
udayāstamaye bhānuḥ pradakṣiṇamavartata.
2. lomaśa uvāca adrirājam mahāśailam marum kanakaparvatam
udayāstamaye bhānuḥ pradakṣiṇam avartata
2. Lomasha said: The Sun circumambulated the king of mountains, the great mountain Meru, the golden mountain, at its rising and setting.
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तथा विन्ध्यः शैलः सूर्यमथाब्रवीत् ।
यथा हि मेरुर्भवता नित्यशः परिगम्यते ।
प्रदक्षिणं च क्रियते मामेवं कुरु भास्कर ॥३॥
3. taṁ tu dṛṣṭvā tathā vindhyaḥ śailaḥ sūryamathābravīt ,
yathā hi merurbhavatā nityaśaḥ parigamyate ,
pradakṣiṇaṁ ca kriyate māmevaṁ kuru bhāskara.
3. tam tu dṛṣṭvā tathā vindhyaḥ śailaḥ
sūryam atha abravīt yathā hi meruḥ
bhavatā nityaśaḥ parigamyate pradakṣiṇam
ca kriyate mām evam kuru bhāskara
3. Seeing him thus, the mountain Vindhya then said to the Sun: "Just as Meru is constantly circumambulated and worshipped by you, O Sun, do the same for me!"
एवमुक्तस्ततः सूर्यः शैलेन्द्रं प्रत्यभाषत ।
नाहमात्मेच्छया शैल करोम्येनं प्रदक्षिणम् ।
एष मार्गः प्रदिष्टो मे येनेदं निर्मितं जगत् ॥४॥
4. evamuktastataḥ sūryaḥ śailendraṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
nāhamātmecchayā śaila karomyenaṁ pradakṣiṇam ,
eṣa mārgaḥ pradiṣṭo me yenedaṁ nirmitaṁ jagat.
4. evam uktaḥ tataḥ sūryaḥ śaila indram
prati abhāṣata na aham ātman icchayā
śaila karomi enam pradakṣiṇam eṣaḥ mārgaḥ
pradiṣṭaḥ me yena idam nirmitam jagat
4. Thus addressed, the Sun then replied to the king of mountains: "O mountain, I do not perform this circumambulation by my own will (ātman). This path was prescribed for me by the one who created this universe."
एवमुक्तस्ततः क्रोधात्प्रवृद्धः सहसाचलः ।
सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्मार्गं रोद्धुमिच्छन्परंतप ॥५॥
5. evamuktastataḥ krodhātpravṛddhaḥ sahasācalaḥ ,
sūryācandramasormārgaṁ roddhumicchanparaṁtapa.
5. evam uktaḥ tataḥ krodhāt pravṛddhaḥ sahasā acalaḥ
sūrya candramasoḥ mārgam roddhum icchan paraṃtapa
5. Thus addressed, the mountain (Vindhya) then suddenly swelled up out of anger, wishing to obstruct the path of the Sun and the Moon, O tormentor of enemies.
ततो देवाः सहिताः सर्व एव सेन्द्राः समागम्य महाद्रिराजम् ।
निवारयामासुरुपायतस्तं न च स्म तेषां वचनं चकार ॥६॥
6. tato devāḥ sahitāḥ sarva eva; sendrāḥ samāgamya mahādrirājam ,
nivārayāmāsurupāyatastaṁ; na ca sma teṣāṁ vacanaṁ cakāra.
6. tataḥ devāḥ sahitāḥ sarve eva
sa-indrāḥ samāgamya mahā-adri-rājam
nivārayām āsuḥ upāyataḥ tam
na ca sma teṣām vacanam cakāra
6. Then all the gods, united with Indra, approached the great king of mountains. They tried to stop him with a strategy, but he did not obey their words.
अथाभिजग्मुर्मुनिमाश्रमस्थं तपस्विनं धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठम् ।
अगस्त्यमत्यद्भुतवीर्यदीप्तं तं चार्थमूचुः सहिताः सुरास्ते ॥७॥
7. athābhijagmurmunimāśramasthaṁ; tapasvinaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ variṣṭham ,
agastyamatyadbhutavīryadīptaṁ; taṁ cārthamūcuḥ sahitāḥ surāste.
7. atha abhijagmuḥ munim āśrama-stham
tapasvinam dharma-bhṛtām variṣṭham
agastyam ati-adbhuta-vīrya-dīptam
tam ca artham ūcuḥ sahitāḥ surāḥ te
7. Then those united gods approached the sage Agastya, who dwelled in a hermitage (āśrama), an ascetic foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma) and radiant with extremely wonderful prowess. To him, they explained their purpose.
देवा ऊचुः ।
सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्मार्गं नक्षत्राणां गतिं तथा ।
शैलराजो वृणोत्येष विन्ध्यः क्रोधवशानुगः ॥८॥
8. devā ūcuḥ ,
sūryācandramasormārgaṁ nakṣatrāṇāṁ gatiṁ tathā ,
śailarājo vṛṇotyeṣa vindhyaḥ krodhavaśānugaḥ.
8. devāḥ ūcuḥ sūrya-candramasōḥ mārgam nakṣatrāṇām gatim
tathā śaila-rājaḥ vṛṇoti eṣaḥ vindhyaḥ krodha-vaśa-anugaḥ
8. The gods said: "This Vindhya, the king of mountains, driven by anger, obstructs the path of the sun and moon, as well as the movement of the constellations."
तं निवारयितुं शक्तो नान्यः कश्चिद्द्विजोत्तम ।
ऋते त्वां हि महाभाग तस्मादेनं निवारय ॥९॥
9. taṁ nivārayituṁ śakto nānyaḥ kaściddvijottama ,
ṛte tvāṁ hi mahābhāga tasmādenaṁ nivāraya.
9. tam nivārayitum śaktaḥ na anyaḥ kaścit dvija-uttama
ṛte tvām hi mahā-bhāga tasmāt enam nivāraya
9. "O best among the twice-born (dvija), no one else is capable of stopping him except you, O greatly fortunate one. Therefore, please restrain him."
लोमश उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं विप्रः सुराणां शैलमभ्यगात् ।
सोऽभिगम्याब्रवीद्विन्ध्यं सदारः समुपस्थितः ॥१०॥
10. lomaśa uvāca ,
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ vipraḥ surāṇāṁ śailamabhyagāt ,
so'bhigamyābravīdvindhyaṁ sadāraḥ samupasthitaḥ.
10. lomaśa uvāca tat śrutvā vacanam vipraḥ surāṇām śailam
abhyagāt saḥ abhigamya abravīt vindhyam sadāraḥ samupasthitaḥ
10. Lomaśa said: Having heard that speech, the brahmin (vipra) approached the mountain of the gods. Having arrived there, he addressed Vindhya, who was present with his wife.
मार्गमिच्छाम्यहं दत्तं भवता पर्वतोत्तम ।
दक्षिणामभिगन्तास्मि दिशं कार्येण केनचित् ॥११॥
11. mārgamicchāmyahaṁ dattaṁ bhavatā parvatottama ,
dakṣiṇāmabhigantāsmi diśaṁ kāryeṇa kenacit.
11. mārgam icchāmi aham dattam bhavatā parvatottama
dakṣiṇām abhigantā asmi diśam kāryeṇa kenacit
11. O best of mountains, I desire a path to be granted by you. I intend to go to the southern direction for some specific purpose.
यावदागमनं मह्यं तावत्त्वं प्रतिपालय ।
निवृत्ते मयि शैलेन्द्र ततो वर्धस्व कामतः ॥१२॥
12. yāvadāgamanaṁ mahyaṁ tāvattvaṁ pratipālaya ,
nivṛtte mayi śailendra tato vardhasva kāmataḥ.
12. yāvat āgamanam mahyam tāvat tvam pratipālaya
nivṛtte mayi śailendra tataḥ vardhasva kāmataḥ
12. You should wait until my return. O chief of mountains, after I have returned, then you may grow as you desire.
एवं स समयं कृत्वा विन्ध्येनामित्रकर्शन ।
अद्यापि दक्षिणाद्देशाद्वारुणिर्न निवर्तते ॥१३॥
13. evaṁ sa samayaṁ kṛtvā vindhyenāmitrakarśana ,
adyāpi dakṣiṇāddeśādvāruṇirna nivartate.
13. evam saḥ samayam kṛtvā vindhyena amitrakarśana
adya api dakṣiṇāt deśāt vāruṇiḥ na nivartate
13. Thus having made this agreement with Vindhya, O destroyer of enemies, Vāruṇi has not yet returned from the southern region even today.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथा विन्ध्यो न वर्धते ।
अगस्त्यस्य प्रभावेन यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१४॥
14. etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yathā vindhyo na vardhate ,
agastyasya prabhāvena yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi.
14. etat te sarvam ākhyātam yathā vindhyaḥ na vardhate
agastyasya prabhāvena yat mām tvam paripṛcchasi
14. All this has been narrated to you regarding how the Vindhya mountain does not grow, due to the power (prabhāva) of Agastya, about which you asked me.
कालेयास्तु यथा राजन्सुरैः सर्वैर्निषूदिताः ।
अगस्त्याद्वरमासाद्य तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥१५॥
15. kāleyāstu yathā rājansuraiḥ sarvairniṣūditāḥ ,
agastyādvaramāsādya tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu.
15. kāleyāḥ tu yathā rājan suraiḥ sarvaiḥ niṣūditāḥ
agastyāt varam āsādya tat me nigadataḥ śṛṇu
15. O king, listen to me as I narrate how all the Kāleya demons were destroyed by all the gods after obtaining a boon from Agastya.
त्रिदशानां वचः श्रुत्वा मैत्रावरुणिरब्रवीत् ।
किमर्थमभियाताः स्थ वरं मत्तः किमिच्छथ ।
एवमुक्तास्ततस्तेन देवास्तं मुनिमब्रुवन् ॥१६॥
16. tridaśānāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā maitrāvaruṇirabravīt ,
kimarthamabhiyātāḥ stha varaṁ mattaḥ kimicchatha ,
evamuktāstatastena devāstaṁ munimabruvan.
16. tridaśānām vacaḥ śrutvā maitrāvaruṇiḥ
abravīt kimartham abhiyātāḥ stha
varam mattaḥ kim icchatha evam uktāḥ
tataḥ tena devāḥ tam munim abruvan
16. Having heard the words of the gods, Maitrāvaruṇi (Agastya) said, "Why have you come? What boon do you desire from me?" Then, addressed thus by him, the gods spoke to that sage.
एवं त्वयेच्छाम कृतं महर्षे महार्णवं पीयमानं महात्मन् ।
ततो वधिष्याम सहानुबन्धान्कालेयसंज्ञान्सुरविद्विषस्तान् ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ tvayecchāma kṛtaṁ maharṣe; mahārṇavaṁ pīyamānaṁ mahātman ,
tato vadhiṣyāma sahānubandhā;nkāleyasaṁjñānsuravidviṣastān.
17. evam tvayā icchāma kṛtam maharṣe
mahārṇavam pīyamānam mahātman
tataḥ vadhiṣyāma sahānubandhān
kāleyasaṃjñān suravidviṣaḥ tān
17. "O great sage (maharṣi), O great-souled one (mahātman), we wish that this great ocean be drunk by you. Then we shall kill those enemies of the gods, known as Kāleyas, along with their relatives."
त्रिदशानां वचः श्रुत्वा तथेति मुनिरब्रवीत् ।
करिष्ये भवतां कामं लोकानां च महत्सुखम् ॥१८॥
18. tridaśānāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā tatheti munirabravīt ,
kariṣye bhavatāṁ kāmaṁ lokānāṁ ca mahatsukham.
18. tridaśānām vacas śrutvā tathā iti muniḥ abravīt
kariṣye bhavatām kāmam lokānām ca mahat sukham
18. Having heard the words of the gods, the sage said, "So be it. I will fulfill your desire and also bring great happiness to the worlds."
एवमुक्त्वा ततोऽगच्छत्समुद्रं सरितां पतिम् ।
ऋषिभिश्च तपःसिद्धैः सार्धं देवैश्च सुव्रतः ॥१९॥
19. evamuktvā tato'gacchatsamudraṁ saritāṁ patim ,
ṛṣibhiśca tapaḥsiddhaiḥ sārdhaṁ devaiśca suvrataḥ.
19. evam uktvā tatas agacchat samudram saritām patim
ṛṣibhiḥ ca tapassiddhaiḥ sārdham devaiḥ ca suvrataḥ
19. Having spoken thus, the sage, who was firm in his vows, then went to the ocean, the lord of rivers, accompanied by sages who had attained perfection through asceticism (tapas) and by the gods.
मनुष्योरगगन्धर्वयक्षकिंपुरुषास्तथा ।
अनुजग्मुर्महात्मानं द्रष्टुकामास्तदद्भुतम् ॥२०॥
20. manuṣyoragagandharvayakṣakiṁpuruṣāstathā ,
anujagmurmahātmānaṁ draṣṭukāmāstadadbhutam.
20. manuṣyoragagandharvayakṣakimpuruṣāḥ tathā
anujagmuḥ mahātmānam draṣṭukāmāḥ tat adbhutam
20. Similarly, humans, serpents (uraga), gandharvas, yakṣas, and kimpuruṣas followed the great soul, eager to behold that wonder.
ततोऽभ्यगच्छन्सहिताः समुद्रं भीमनिस्वनम् ।
नृत्यन्तमिव चोर्मीभिर्वल्गन्तमिव वायुना ॥२१॥
21. tato'bhyagacchansahitāḥ samudraṁ bhīmanisvanam ,
nṛtyantamiva cormībhirvalgantamiva vāyunā.
21. tatas abhyagacchan sahitāḥ samudram bhīmanisvanam
nṛtyantam iva ca urmībhiḥ valgantam iva vāyunā
21. Then, assembled together, they approached the ocean, which had a dreadful roar, seeming to dance with its waves and to leap about due to the wind.
हसन्तमिव फेनौघैः स्खलन्तं कन्दरेषु च ।
नानाग्राहसमाकीर्णं नानाद्विजगणायुतम् ॥२२॥
22. hasantamiva phenaughaiḥ skhalantaṁ kandareṣu ca ,
nānāgrāhasamākīrṇaṁ nānādvijagaṇāyutam.
22. hasantam iva phenaughaiḥ skhalantam kandareṣu
ca nānāgrāhasamākīrṇam nānādvijagaṇāyutam
22. It appeared as if smiling with masses of foam, flowing down into its caves, filled with various large aquatic creatures, and teeming with flocks of various birds.
अगस्त्यसहिता देवाः सगन्धर्वमहोरगाः ।
ऋषयश्च महाभागाः समासेदुर्महोदधिम् ॥२३॥
23. agastyasahitā devāḥ sagandharvamahoragāḥ ,
ṛṣayaśca mahābhāgāḥ samāsedurmahodadhim.
23. agastyasahitā devāḥ sagandharvamahoragāḥ
ṛṣayaḥ ca mahābhāgāḥ samāsedur mahodadhim
23. The gods, accompanied by Agastya, along with the Gandharvas and great serpents, and the illustrious sages, all approached the great ocean.
