वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सहदेवोऽपि गोपानां कृत्वा वेषमनुत्तमम् ।
भाषां चैषां समास्थाय विराटमुपयादथ ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sahadevo'pi gopānāṁ kṛtvā veṣamanuttamam ,
bhāṣāṁ caiṣāṁ samāsthāya virāṭamupayādatha.
1. vaiśampāyana uvāca sahadevaḥ api gopānām kṛtvā veṣam
anuttamam bhāṣām ca eṣām samāsthāya virāṭam upayāt atha
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Sahadeva also, having adopted an excellent disguise as one of the cowherds and having mastered their language, then approached King Virāṭa.
तमायान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य भ्राजमानं नरर्षभम् ।
समुपस्थाय वै राजा पप्रच्छ कुरुनन्दनम् ॥२॥
2. tamāyāntamabhiprekṣya bhrājamānaṁ nararṣabham ,
samupasthāya vai rājā papraccha kurunandanam.
2. tam āyāntam abhiprekṣya bhrājamānam nararṣabham
samupasthāya vai rājā papraccha kurunandanam
2. Having observed that eminent man approaching, shining brightly, King Virāṭa then went near him and questioned the delight of the Kurus (Sahadeva).
कस्य वा त्वं कुतो वा त्वं किं वा तात चिकीर्षसि ।
न हि मे दृष्टपूर्वस्त्वं तत्त्वं ब्रूहि नरर्षभ ॥३॥
3. kasya vā tvaṁ kuto vā tvaṁ kiṁ vā tāta cikīrṣasi ,
na hi me dṛṣṭapūrvastvaṁ tattvaṁ brūhi nararṣabha.
3. kasya vā tvam kutaḥ vā tvam kim vā tāta cikīrṣasi
na hi me dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ tvam tattvam brūhi nararṣabha
3. Or whose son are you? Or from where do you come? And what, dear one, do you wish to do? For indeed, I have never seen you before. O eminent man, tell me the truth!
स प्राप्य राजानममित्रतापनस्ततोऽब्रवीन्मेघमहौघनिःस्वनः ।
वैश्योऽस्मि नाम्नाहमरिष्टनेमिर्गोसंख्य आसं कुरुपुंगवानाम् ॥४॥
4. sa prāpya rājānamamitratāpana;stato'bravīnmeghamahaughaniḥsvanaḥ ,
vaiśyo'smi nāmnāhamariṣṭanemi;rgosaṁkhya āsaṁ kurupuṁgavānām.
4. saḥ prāpya rājānam amitratāpanaḥ
tataḥ abravīt meghamahaughaniḥsvanaḥ
| vaiśyaḥ asmi nāmnā aham ariṣṭanemiḥ
gosaṃkhyaḥ āsam kurupuṅgavānām
4. Having approached the king, who was a tormentor of foes, he then spoke with a voice like a great mass of clouds. 'I am a Vaiśya by the name of Ariṣṭanemi. I was formerly a cowherd for the foremost among the Kurus.'
वस्तुं त्वयीच्छामि विशां वरिष्ठ तान्राजसिंहान्न हि वेद्मि पार्थान् ।
न शक्यते जीवितुमन्यकर्मणा न च त्वदन्यो मम रोचते नृपः ॥५॥
5. vastuṁ tvayīcchāmi viśāṁ variṣṭha; tānrājasiṁhānna hi vedmi pārthān ,
na śakyate jīvitumanyakarmaṇā; na ca tvadanyo mama rocate nṛpaḥ.
5. vastum tvayi icchāmi viśām variṣṭha
tān rājasiṃhān na hi vedmi pārthān
| na śakyate jīvitum anyakarmaṇā
na ca tvat anyaḥ mama rocate nṛpaḥ
5. O foremost among men, I wish to dwell with you, for I do not know those lion-like kings, the Pārthas. It is not possible for me to live by any other occupation, and no other king apart from you is pleasing to me.
विराट उवाच ।
त्वं ब्राह्मणो यदि वा क्षत्रियोऽसि समुद्रनेमीश्वररूपवानसि ।
आचक्ष्व मे तत्त्वममित्रकर्शन न वैश्यकर्म त्वयि विद्यते समम् ॥६॥
6. virāṭa uvāca ,
tvaṁ brāhmaṇo yadi vā kṣatriyo'si; samudranemīśvararūpavānasi ,
ācakṣva me tattvamamitrakarśana; na vaiśyakarma tvayi vidyate samam.
6. virāṭaḥ uvāca | tvam brāhmaṇaḥ yadi vā
kṣatriyaḥ asi samudranemīśvararūpavān
asi | ācakṣva me tattvam amitrakarśana
na vaiśyakarma tvayi vidyate samam
6. Virāṭa said: 'Are you a Brahmin or a Kṣatriya? You possess a majestic form like a lord whose dominion reaches the ocean's boundary. Tell me the truth, O destroyer of enemies, for no work befitting a Vaiśya is apparent in you.'
कस्यासि राज्ञो विषयादिहागतः किं चापि शिल्पं तव विद्यते कृतम् ।
कथं त्वमस्मासु निवत्स्यसे सदा वदस्व किं चापि तवेह वेतनम् ॥७॥
7. kasyāsi rājño viṣayādihāgataḥ; kiṁ cāpi śilpaṁ tava vidyate kṛtam ,
kathaṁ tvamasmāsu nivatsyase sadā; vadasva kiṁ cāpi taveha vetanam.
7. kasya asi rājñaḥ viṣayāt iha āgataḥ
kim ca api śilpam tava vidyate kṛtam
| katham tvam asmāsu nivatsyase sadā
vadasva kim ca api tava iha vetanam
7. From the domain of which king have you come here? And what skill or craft have you mastered? How will you perpetually reside among us? Tell me also, what is your salary here?
सहदेव उवाच ।
पञ्चानां पाण्डुपुत्राणां ज्येष्ठो राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
तस्याष्टशतसाहस्रा गवां वर्गाः शतं शताः ॥८॥
8. sahadeva uvāca ,
pañcānāṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ jyeṣṭho rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
tasyāṣṭaśatasāhasrā gavāṁ vargāḥ śataṁ śatāḥ.
8. sahadeva uvāca pañcānām pāṇḍuputrāṇām jyeṣṭhaḥ rājā
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tasya aṣṭaśatasāhasrāḥ gavām vargāḥ śatam śatāḥ
8. Sahadeva said: King Yudhishthira, the eldest among the five sons of Pandu, owned eight hundred thousand cows, organized into hundreds of hundreds of herds.
अपरे दशसाहस्रा द्विस्तावन्तस्तथापरे ।
तेषां गोसंख्य आसं वै तन्तिपालेति मां विदुः ॥९॥
9. apare daśasāhasrā dvistāvantastathāpare ,
teṣāṁ gosaṁkhya āsaṁ vai tantipāleti māṁ viduḥ.
9. apare daśaśāhasrāḥ dvistāvantāḥ tathā apare
teṣām gosaṃkhyaḥ āsam vai tantipāla iti mām viduḥ
9. Others possessed ten thousand (cows), and yet others had twice that number. Among those cow-keepers, I was indeed known as Tantipāla.
भूतं भव्यं भविष्यच्च यच्च संख्यागतं क्वचित् ।
न मेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचित्समन्ताद्दशयोजनम् ॥१०॥
10. bhūtaṁ bhavyaṁ bhaviṣyacca yacca saṁkhyāgataṁ kvacit ,
na me'styaviditaṁ kiṁcitsamantāddaśayojanam.
10. bhūtam bhavyam bhaviṣyat ca yat ca saṃkhyāgatam kvacit
na me asti aviditam kiñcit samantāt daśayojanam
10. What has been, what is destined to be, and what will be, as well as anything calculable anywhere—nothing within an area of ten yojanas is unknown to me.
गुणाः सुविदिता ह्यासन्मम तस्य महात्मनः ।
आसीच्च स मया तुष्टः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥११॥
11. guṇāḥ suviditā hyāsanmama tasya mahātmanaḥ ,
āsīcca sa mayā tuṣṭaḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
11. guṇāḥ suviditāḥ ha āsan mama tasya mahātmanaḥ
āsīt ca saḥ mayā tuṣṭaḥ kururājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
11. The excellent qualities of that great-souled (mahātman) person were very well known to me. And that King of the Kurus, Yudhishthira, was pleased with me.
क्षिप्रं हि गावो बहुला भवन्ति न तासु रोगो भवतीह कश्चित् ।
तैस्तैरुपायैर्विदितं मयैतदेतानि शिल्पानि मयि स्थितानि ॥१२॥
12. kṣipraṁ hi gāvo bahulā bhavanti; na tāsu rogo bhavatīha kaścit ,
taistairupāyairviditaṁ mayaita;detāni śilpāni mayi sthitāni.
12. kṣipram hi gāvaḥ bahulā bhavanti
na tāsu rogaḥ bhavati iha kaścit
| taiḥ taiḥ upāyaiḥ viditam mayā
etat etāni śilpāni mayi sthitāni
12. Indeed, cows quickly multiply and no disease ever afflicts them here. I have learned this through various methods, and these skills reside within me.
वृषभांश्चापि जानामि राजन्पूजितलक्षणान् ।
येषां मूत्रमुपाघ्राय अपि वन्ध्या प्रसूयते ॥१३॥
13. vṛṣabhāṁścāpi jānāmi rājanpūjitalakṣaṇān ,
yeṣāṁ mūtramupāghrāya api vandhyā prasūyate.
13. vṛṣabhān ca api jānāmi rājan pūjitalakṣaṇān |
yeṣām mūtram upāghrāya api vandhyā prasūyate
13. O King, I also know bulls possessing auspicious characteristics, by smelling the urine of which even a barren cow becomes fertile and gives birth.
विराट उवाच ।
शतं सहस्राणि समाहितानि वर्णस्य वर्णस्य विनिश्चिता गुणैः ।
पशून्सपालान्भवते ददाम्यहं त्वदाश्रया मे पशवो भवन्त्विह ॥१४॥
14. virāṭa uvāca ,
śataṁ sahasrāṇi samāhitāni; varṇasya varṇasya viniścitā guṇaiḥ ,
paśūnsapālānbhavate dadāmyahaṁ; tvadāśrayā me paśavo bhavantviha.
14. virāṭa uvāca | śatam sahasrāṇi samāhitāni
varṇasya varṇasya viniścitā
guṇaiḥ | paśūn sapālān bhavate dadāmi
aham tvadāśrayā me paśavaḥ bhavantu iha
14. Virata said: 'I will give you hundreds of thousands of cattle, each specifically identified by its qualities, along with their herdsmen. May my cattle here remain under your protection.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा स राज्ञोऽविदितो विशां पते उवास तत्रैव सुखं नरेश्वरः ।
न चैनमन्येऽपि विदुः कथंचन प्रादाच्च तस्मै भरणं यथेप्सितम् ॥१५॥
15. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā sa rājño'vidito viśāṁ pate; uvāsa tatraiva sukhaṁ nareśvaraḥ ,
na cainamanye'pi viduḥ kathaṁcana; prādācca tasmai bharaṇaṁ yathepsitam.
15. vaiśampāyana uvāca | tathā saḥ rājñaḥ aviditaḥ
viśām pate uvāsa tatra eva sukham
nareśvaraḥ | na ca enam anye api viduḥ kathaṃcana
prādāt ca tasmai bharaṇam yathepsitam
15. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Thus, that lord of men (Yudhisthira), unknown to the king, lived happily there. Moreover, no one else recognized him at all. And the king provided him with the desired maintenance.'
