वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः सागरसंकाशं दृष्ट्वा नृपतिसागरम् ।
रोषात्प्रचलितं सर्वमिदमाह युधिष्ठिरः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ sāgarasaṁkāśaṁ dṛṣṭvā nṛpatisāgaram ,
roṣātpracalitaṁ sarvamidamāha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
1. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ sāgarasaṃkāśam dṛṣṭvā
nṛpatisāgaram roṣāt pracalitam sarvam idam āha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, upon seeing that entire ocean-like multitude of kings agitated with anger, Yudhishthira spoke these words.
भीष्मं मतिमतां श्रेष्ठं वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम् ।
बृहस्पतिं बृहत्तेजाः पुरुहूत इवारिहा ॥२॥
2. bhīṣmaṁ matimatāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ vṛddhaṁ kurupitāmaham ,
bṛhaspatiṁ bṛhattejāḥ puruhūta ivārihā.
2. bhīṣmam matimatām śreṣṭham vṛddham kurupitāmaham
bṛhaspatim bṛhattejāḥ puruhūtaḥ iva arihā
2. He (Yudhishthira), possessing great brilliance, spoke to Bhishma, who was the best among the wise, aged, and the grandfather of the Kurus, just as Indra, the slayer of foes, would address Brihaspati.
असौ रोषात्प्रचलितो महान्नृपतिसागरः ।
अत्र यत्प्रतिपत्तव्यं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥३॥
3. asau roṣātpracalito mahānnṛpatisāgaraḥ ,
atra yatpratipattavyaṁ tanme brūhi pitāmaha.
3. asau roṣāt pracalitaḥ mahān nṛpatisāgaraḥ
atra yat pratipattavyam tat me brūhi pitāmaha
3. This great ocean of kings is agitated with anger. Therefore, tell me, O Grandsire, what course of action should be taken in this situation.
यज्ञस्य च न विघ्नः स्यात्प्रजानां च शिवं भवेत् ।
यथा सर्वत्र तत्सर्वं ब्रूहि मेऽद्य पितामह ॥४॥
4. yajñasya ca na vighnaḥ syātprajānāṁ ca śivaṁ bhavet ,
yathā sarvatra tatsarvaṁ brūhi me'dya pitāmaha.
4. yajñasya ca na vighnaḥ syāt prajānām ca śivam bhavet
yathā sarvatra tat sarvam brūhi me adya pitāmaha
4. pitāmaha adya me brūhi yathā tat sarvam sarvatra
yajñasya ca na vighnaḥ syāt ca prajānām śivam bhavet
4. O Grandfather, tell me today how all this can be ensured everywhere, so that there are no impediments to the Vedic ritual (yajña) and welfare prevails among the people.
इत्युक्तवति धर्मज्ञे धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे ।
उवाचेदं वचो भीष्मस्ततः कुरुपितामहः ॥५॥
5. ityuktavati dharmajñe dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire ,
uvācedaṁ vaco bhīṣmastataḥ kurupitāmahaḥ.
5. iti uktavati dharmajñe dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire
uvāca idam vacaḥ bhīṣmaḥ tataḥ kurupitāmahaḥ
5. When Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma) and knower of natural law (dharma), had thus spoken, Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kurus, then uttered these words.
मा भैस्त्वं कुरुशार्दूल श्वा सिंहं हन्तुमर्हति ।
शिवः पन्थाः सुनीतोऽत्र मया पूर्वतरं वृतः ॥६॥
6. mā bhaistvaṁ kuruśārdūla śvā siṁhaṁ hantumarhati ,
śivaḥ panthāḥ sunīto'tra mayā pūrvataraṁ vṛtaḥ.
6. mā bhaiḥ tvam kuruśārdūla śvā siṃham hantum arhati
śivaḥ panthāḥ sunītaḥ atra mayā pūrvataram vṛtaḥ
6. O tiger among the Kurus, do not be afraid! A dog is not able to kill a lion. Indeed, an auspicious and well-guided path has already been chosen by me in this matter.
प्रसुप्ते हि यथा सिंहे श्वानस्तत्र समागताः ।
भषेयुः सहिताः सर्वे तथेमे वसुधाधिपाः ॥७॥
7. prasupte hi yathā siṁhe śvānastatra samāgatāḥ ,
bhaṣeyuḥ sahitāḥ sarve tatheme vasudhādhipāḥ.
7. prasuupte hi yathā siṃhe śvānaḥ tatra samāgatāḥ
bhaṣeyuḥ sahitāḥ sarve tathā ime vasudhādhipāḥ
7. Indeed, just as all the dogs would bark together, having gathered around a lion when it is fast asleep, similarly do these rulers of the earth behave.
वृष्णिसिंहस्य सुप्तस्य तथेमे प्रमुखे स्थिताः ।
भषन्ते तात संक्रुद्धाः श्वानः सिंहस्य संनिधौ ॥८॥
8. vṛṣṇisiṁhasya suptasya tatheme pramukhe sthitāḥ ,
bhaṣante tāta saṁkruddhāḥ śvānaḥ siṁhasya saṁnidhau.
8. vṛṣṇisiṃhasya suptasya tathā ime pramukhe sthitāḥ
bhaṣante tāta saṃkruddhāḥ śvānaḥ siṃhasya saṃnidhau
8. Similarly, O dear one, these greatly enraged dogs are barking in front of the sleeping lion among the Vṛṣṇis, in the lion's very presence.
न हि संबुध्यते तावत्सुप्तः सिंह इवाच्युतः ।
तेन सिंहीकरोत्येतान्नृसिंहश्चेदिपुंगवः ॥९॥
9. na hi saṁbudhyate tāvatsuptaḥ siṁha ivācyutaḥ ,
tena siṁhīkarotyetānnṛsiṁhaścedipuṁgavaḥ.
9. na hi saṃbudhyate tāvat suptaḥ siṃhaḥ iva acyutaḥ
tena siṃhīkaroti etān nṛsiṃhaḥ cedipuṅgavaḥ
9. Kṛṣṇa (Acyuta), like a sleeping lion, does not awaken immediately. For that reason, Śiśupāla, the bull among the Cedis, is making these kings into his prey.
पार्थिवान्पार्थिवश्रेष्ठ शिशुपालोऽल्पचेतनः ।
सर्वान्सर्वात्मना तात नेतुकामो यमक्षयम् ॥१०॥
10. pārthivānpārthivaśreṣṭha śiśupālo'lpacetanaḥ ,
sarvānsarvātmanā tāta netukāmo yamakṣayam.
10. pārthivān pārthivśreṣṭha śiśupālaḥ alpacetanaḥ
sarvān sarvā́tmanā tāta netukāmaḥ yamakṣayam
10. O best of kings, O dear one, foolish Śiśupāla wishes to lead all these rulers to the abode of Yama (death) with all his might.
नूनमेतत्समादातुं पुनरिच्छत्यधोक्षजः ।
यदस्य शिशुपालस्थं तेजस्तिष्ठति भारत ॥११॥
11. nūnametatsamādātuṁ punaricchatyadhokṣajaḥ ,
yadasya śiśupālasthaṁ tejastiṣṭhati bhārata.
11. nūnam etat samādātum punaḥ icchati adhokṣajaḥ
yat asya śiśupālastham tejaḥ tiṣṭhati bhārata
11. O Bhārata, surely Adhokṣaja (Kṛṣṇa) wishes to take back again that splendor (tejas) which currently resides in Śiśupāla.
विप्लुता चास्य भद्रं ते बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतां वर ।
चेदिराजस्य कौन्तेय सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम् ॥१२॥
12. viplutā cāsya bhadraṁ te buddhirbuddhimatāṁ vara ,
cedirājasya kaunteya sarveṣāṁ ca mahīkṣitām.
12. viplutā ca asya bhadram te buddhiḥ buddhimatām
vara cedirājasya kaunteya sarveṣām ca mahīkṣitām
12. O best among the intelligent, O son of Kuntī, may good fortune be with you; the intellect of the king of the Cedis is bewildered, and also that of all these kings.
आदातुं हि नरव्याघ्रो यं यमिच्छत्ययं यदा ।
तस्य विप्लवते बुद्धिरेवं चेदिपतेर्यथा ॥१३॥
13. ādātuṁ hi naravyāghro yaṁ yamicchatyayaṁ yadā ,
tasya viplavate buddhirevaṁ cedipateryathā.
13. ādātum hi naravyāghraḥ yam yam icchati ayam yadā
tasya viplavate buddhiḥ evam cedipateḥ yathā
13. Indeed, when this tiger among men (naravyāghra) desires to seize whatever he wishes, his intellect (buddhi) becomes bewildered, just as the intellect (buddhi) of the King of Cedi (Cedipati) does.
चतुर्विधानां भूतानां त्रिषु लोकेषु माधवः ।
प्रभवश्चैव सर्वेषां निधनं च युधिष्ठिर ॥१४॥
14. caturvidhānāṁ bhūtānāṁ triṣu lokeṣu mādhavaḥ ,
prabhavaścaiva sarveṣāṁ nidhanaṁ ca yudhiṣṭhira.
14. caturvidhānām bhūtānām triṣu lokeṣu mādhavaḥ
prabhavaḥ ca eva sarveṣām nidhanam ca yudhiṣṭhira
14. O Yudhiṣṭhira, Mādhava (Krishna) is indeed the origin and the end of all four types of beings throughout the three worlds.
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा ततश्चेदिपतिर्नृपः ।
भीष्मं रूक्षाक्षरा वाचः श्रावयामास भारत ॥१५॥
15. iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tataścedipatirnṛpaḥ ,
bhīṣmaṁ rūkṣākṣarā vācaḥ śrāvayāmāsa bhārata.
15. iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tataḥ cedipatiḥ nṛpaḥ
bhīṣmam rūkṣākṣarāḥ vācaḥ śrāvayāmāsa bhārata
15. O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), having thus heard his words, the King of Cedi (Cedipati) then spoke harsh words (rūkṣākṣarā vācaḥ) to Bhīṣma.
