वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य देवयानी नृपोत्तम ।
वनं तदेव निर्याता क्रीडार्थं वरवर्णिनी ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
atha dīrghasya kālasya devayānī nṛpottama ,
vanaṁ tadeva niryātā krīḍārthaṁ varavarṇinī.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca atha dīrghasya kālasya devayānī
nṛpottama vanam tat eva niryātā krīḍārtham varavarṇinī
1. Vaiśampāyana said: O best of kings, after a long time, the beautiful Devayānī went out to that very same forest for recreation.
तेन दासीसहस्रेण सार्धं शर्मिष्ठया तदा ।
तमेव देशं संप्राप्ता यथाकामं चचार सा ।
ताभिः सखीभिः सहिता सर्वाभिर्मुदिता भृशम् ॥२॥
2. tena dāsīsahasreṇa sārdhaṁ śarmiṣṭhayā tadā ,
tameva deśaṁ saṁprāptā yathākāmaṁ cacāra sā ,
tābhiḥ sakhībhiḥ sahitā sarvābhirmuditā bhṛśam.
2. tena dāsīsahastreṇa sārdham śarmiṣṭhayā
tadā tam eva deśam samprāptā
yathākāmam cacāra sā tābhiḥ sakhībhiḥ
sahitā sarvābhiḥ muditā bhṛśam
2. At that time, accompanied by Śarmiṣṭhā and a thousand slave-girls, she arrived at that very spot and roamed about as she wished. She was exceedingly delighted, along with all her friends.
क्रीडन्त्योऽभिरताः सर्वाः पिबन्त्यो मधुमाधवीम् ।
खादन्त्यो विविधान्भक्ष्यान्विदशन्त्यः फलानि च ॥३॥
3. krīḍantyo'bhiratāḥ sarvāḥ pibantyo madhumādhavīm ,
khādantyo vividhānbhakṣyānvidaśantyaḥ phalāni ca.
3. krīḍantyaḥ abhiratāḥ sarvāḥ pibantyaḥ madhumādhavīm
khādantyaḥ vividhān bhakṣyān vidaśantyaḥ phalāni ca
3. All of them, absorbed in their play, were drinking madhumādhavī wine, eating various foods, and munching on fruits.
पुनश्च नाहुषो राजा मृगलिप्सुर्यदृच्छया ।
तमेव देशं संप्राप्तो जलार्थी श्रमकर्शितः ॥४॥
4. punaśca nāhuṣo rājā mṛgalipsuryadṛcchayā ,
tameva deśaṁ saṁprāpto jalārthī śramakarśitaḥ.
4. punaḥ ca nāhuṣaḥ rājā mṛgalipsuḥ yadṛcchayā
tam eva deśam samprāptaḥ jalārthī śramakarśitaḥ
4. And again, King Nāhuṣa, desiring to hunt deer, happened by chance to arrive at that very place, thirsty and exhausted from his exertions.
ददृशे देवयानीं च शर्मिष्ठां ताश्च योषितः ।
पिबन्तीर्ललमानाश्च दिव्याभरणभूषिताः ॥५॥
5. dadṛśe devayānīṁ ca śarmiṣṭhāṁ tāśca yoṣitaḥ ,
pibantīrlalamānāśca divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ.
5. dadṛśe devayānīm ca śarmiṣṭhām tāḥ ca yoṣitaḥ
pibantīḥ lalamānāḥ ca divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ
5. He saw Devayānī, Śarmiṣṭhā, and those other women, all drinking, sporting playfully, and adorned with divine ornaments.
उपविष्टां च ददृशे देवयानीं शुचिस्मिताम् ।
रूपेणाप्रतिमां तासां स्त्रीणां मध्ये वराङ्गनाम् ।
शर्मिष्ठया सेव्यमानां पादसंवाहनादिभिः ॥६॥
6. upaviṣṭāṁ ca dadṛśe devayānīṁ śucismitām ,
rūpeṇāpratimāṁ tāsāṁ strīṇāṁ madhye varāṅganām ,
śarmiṣṭhayā sevyamānāṁ pādasaṁvāhanādibhiḥ.
6. upaviṣṭām ca dadṛśe devayānīm
śucismitām rūpeṇa apratimām tāsām
strīṇām madhye varāṅganām śarmiṣṭhayā
sevyamānām pādasaṃvāhanādibhiḥ
6. He also saw Devayānī seated, with a sweet smile, unequalled in beauty among those women, a most excellent lady. She was being served by Śarmiṣṭhā with foot massages and similar services.
ययातिरुवाच ।
द्वाभ्यां कन्यासहस्राभ्यां द्वे कन्ये परिवारिते ।
गोत्रे च नामनी चैव द्वयोः पृच्छामि वामहम् ॥७॥
7. yayātiruvāca ,
dvābhyāṁ kanyāsahasrābhyāṁ dve kanye parivārite ,
gotre ca nāmanī caiva dvayoḥ pṛcchāmi vāmaham.
7. yayātiḥ uvāca dvābhyām kanyāsahasrābhyām dve kanye
parivārite gotre ca nāmanī ca eva dvayoḥ pṛcchāmi vām aham
7. Yayāti said: "You two maidens are attended by two thousand other maidens. I ask both of you for your lineage and names."
देवयान्युवाच ।
आख्यास्याम्यहमादत्स्व वचनं मे नराधिप ।
शुक्रो नामासुरगुरुः सुतां जानीहि तस्य माम् ॥८॥
8. devayānyuvāca ,
ākhyāsyāmyahamādatsva vacanaṁ me narādhipa ,
śukro nāmāsuraguruḥ sutāṁ jānīhi tasya mām.
8. devayānī uvāca ākhyāsyāmi aham ādatva vacanam me
narādhipa śukraḥ nāma asuraguruḥ sutām jānīhi tasya mām
8. Devayānī said: "O king, I will tell you; please listen to my words. Know me to be the daughter of Śukra, the preceptor of the asuras."
इयं च मे सखी दासी यत्राहं तत्र गामिनी ।
दुहिता दानवेन्द्रस्य शर्मिष्ठा वृषपर्वणः ॥९॥
9. iyaṁ ca me sakhī dāsī yatrāhaṁ tatra gāminī ,
duhitā dānavendrasya śarmiṣṭhā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ.
9. iyam ca me sakhī dāsī yatra aham tatra gāminī
duhitā dānavendrasya śarmiṣṭhā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
9. And this friend of mine is a maidservant who accompanies me wherever I go. She is Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, the lord of the Dānavas.
ययातिरुवाच ।
कथं नु ते सखी दासी कन्येयं वरवर्णिनी ।
असुरेन्द्रसुता सुभ्रु परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥१०॥
10. yayātiruvāca ,
kathaṁ nu te sakhī dāsī kanyeyaṁ varavarṇinī ,
asurendrasutā subhru paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me.
10. yayātiḥ uvāca katham nu te sakhī dāsī kanyā iyam
varavarṇinī asurendrasutā subhru param kautūhalam hi me
10. Yayāti said: "O girl of beautiful complexion, O lady with beautiful brows, how indeed is this girl, the daughter of the lord of asuras, your friend and yet a maidservant? Truly, I have great curiosity about this."
देवयान्युवाच ।
सर्व एव नरव्याघ्र विधानमनुवर्तते ।
विधानविहितं मत्वा मा विचित्राः कथाः कृथाः ॥११॥
11. devayānyuvāca ,
sarva eva naravyāghra vidhānamanuvartate ,
vidhānavihitaṁ matvā mā vicitrāḥ kathāḥ kṛthāḥ.
11. devayānī uvāca sarvaḥ eva naravyāghra vidhānam anuvartate
vidhānavihitam matvā mā vicitrāḥ kathāḥ kṛthāḥ
11. Devayānī said: "O tiger among men, everyone indeed conforms to destiny. Considering this to be ordained by destiny, do not make any strange narratives."
राजवद्रूपवेषौ ते ब्राह्मीं वाचं बिभर्षि च ।
किंनामा त्वं कुतश्चासि कस्य पुत्रश्च शंस मे ॥१२॥
12. rājavadrūpaveṣau te brāhmīṁ vācaṁ bibharṣi ca ,
kiṁnāmā tvaṁ kutaścāsi kasya putraśca śaṁsa me.
12. rājavat rūpaveṣau te brāhmīm vācam bibharṣi ca
kimnāmā tvam kutaḥ ca asi kasya putraḥ ca śamsa me
12. "Your form and attire are like a king's, and you also speak with brahminical speech. What is your name? Where are you from? And whose son are you? Tell me."
ययातिरुवाच ।
ब्रह्मचर्येण कृत्स्नो मे वेदः श्रुतिपथं गतः ।
राजाहं राजपुत्रश्च ययातिरिति विश्रुतः ॥१३॥
13. yayātiruvāca ,
brahmacaryeṇa kṛtsno me vedaḥ śrutipathaṁ gataḥ ,
rājāhaṁ rājaputraśca yayātiriti viśrutaḥ.
13. yayātiḥ uvāca brahmacaryeṇa kṛtsnaḥ me vedaḥ śrutipatham
gataḥ rājā aham rājaputraḥ ca yayātiḥ iti viśrutaḥ
13. Yayati said, 'Through the practice of brahmacharya, I have mastered the entire Veda. I am a king, and a prince, well-known as Yayati.'
देवयान्युवाच ।
केनास्यर्थेन नृपते इमं देशमुपागतः ।
जिघृक्षुर्वारिजं किंचिदथ वा मृगलिप्सया ॥१४॥
14. devayānyuvāca ,
kenāsyarthena nṛpate imaṁ deśamupāgataḥ ,
jighṛkṣurvārijaṁ kiṁcidatha vā mṛgalipsayā.
14. devayānī uvāca kena asya arthena nṛpate imam deśam
upāgataḥ jighṛkṣuḥ vārijam kiñcit atha vā mṛgalipsayā
14. Devayani said, 'O King, for what reason have you come to this region? Is it perhaps with a desire to obtain some aquatic plants, or to hunt game?'
ययातिरुवाच ।
मृगलिप्सुरहं भद्रे पानीयार्थमुपागतः ।
बहु चाप्यनुयुक्तोऽस्मि तन्मानुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१५॥
15. yayātiruvāca ,
mṛgalipsurahaṁ bhadre pānīyārthamupāgataḥ ,
bahu cāpyanuyukto'smi tanmānujñātumarhasi.
15. yayātiḥ uvāca mṛgalipsuḥ aham bhadre pānīyārtham upāgataḥ
bahu ca api anuyuktaḥ asmi tat mā anujñātum arhasi
15. Yayati said, 'O auspicious lady, I have come here for water, though I am also indeed a hunter. Since I have been questioned extensively, you should now grant me leave.'
देवयान्युवाच ।
द्वाभ्यां कन्यासहस्राभ्यां दास्या शर्मिष्ठया सह ।
त्वदधीनास्मि भद्रं ते सखा भर्ता च मे भव ॥१६॥
16. devayānyuvāca ,
dvābhyāṁ kanyāsahasrābhyāṁ dāsyā śarmiṣṭhayā saha ,
tvadadhīnāsmi bhadraṁ te sakhā bhartā ca me bhava.
16. devayānī uvāca dvābhyām kanyāsahasrābhyām dāsyā śarmiṣṭhayā
saha tvadadhīnā asmi bhadram te sakhā bhartā ca me bhava
16. Devayani said, 'With two thousand maidens and my maidservant Sharmishtha, I am now subservient to you. May all be well with you! Be my companion and husband.'
ययातिरुवाच ।
विद्ध्यौशनसि भद्रं ते न त्वामर्होऽस्मि भामिनि ।
अविवाह्या हि राजानो देवयानि पितुस्तव ॥१७॥
17. yayātiruvāca ,
viddhyauśanasi bhadraṁ te na tvāmarho'smi bhāmini ,
avivāhyā hi rājāno devayāni pitustava.
17. yayātiḥ uvāca viddhi auśanasi bhadram te na tvām arhaḥ
asmi bhāmini avivāhyāḥ hi rājānaḥ devayāni pituḥ tava
17. Yayati said, 'Listen, O daughter of Uśanas (Śukra), may good fortune be upon you! O beautiful lady, I am not worthy of you. Indeed, kings cannot marry the daughters of your father, O Devayani.'
देवयान्युवाच ।
संसृष्टं ब्रह्मणा क्षत्रं क्षत्रं च ब्रह्मसंहितम् ।
ऋषिश्च ऋषिपुत्रश्च नाहुषाङ्ग वहस्व माम् ॥१८॥
18. devayānyuvāca ,
saṁsṛṣṭaṁ brahmaṇā kṣatraṁ kṣatraṁ ca brahmasaṁhitam ,
ṛṣiśca ṛṣiputraśca nāhuṣāṅga vahasva mām.
18. devayānī uvāca saṃsṛṣṭam brahmaṇā kṣatram kṣatram ca
brahma-saṃhitam ṛṣiḥ ca ṛṣi-putraḥ ca nāhuṣāṅga vahasva mām
18. Devayānī said: The Kṣatriya class is deeply intertwined with the Brāhmaṇa class, and indeed, the Kṣatriya is always connected to the Brāhmaṇa. You are a sage and the son of a sage, O scion of Nahuṣa; therefore, take me as your wife.
ययातिरुवाच ।
एकदेहोद्भवा वर्णाश्चत्वारोऽपि वराङ्गने ।
पृथग्धर्माः पृथक्शौचास्तेषां तु ब्राह्मणो वरः ॥१९॥
19. yayātiruvāca ,
ekadehodbhavā varṇāścatvāro'pi varāṅgane ,
pṛthagdharmāḥ pṛthakśaucāsteṣāṁ tu brāhmaṇo varaḥ.
19. yayātiḥ uvāca ekadehodbhavāḥ varṇāḥ catvāraḥ api varāṅgane
pṛthagdharmāḥ pṛthakśaucāḥ teṣām tu brāhmaṇaḥ varaḥ
19. Yayāti said: O beautiful lady, although the four social classes (varṇas) originate from a single body, they have distinct dharmas and distinct purifications. Among them, however, the Brāhmaṇa is the best.
देवयान्युवाच ।
पाणिधर्मो नाहुषायं न पुम्भिः सेवितः पुरा ।
तं मे त्वमग्रहीरग्रे वृणोमि त्वामहं ततः ॥२०॥
20. devayānyuvāca ,
pāṇidharmo nāhuṣāyaṁ na pumbhiḥ sevitaḥ purā ,
taṁ me tvamagrahīragre vṛṇomi tvāmahaṁ tataḥ.
20. devayānī uvāca pāṇi-dharmaḥ nāhuṣa ayam na pumbhiḥ sevitaḥ
purā tam me tvam agrahīḥ agre vṛṇomi tvām aham tataḥ
20. Devayānī said: O scion of Nahuṣa, this custom of hand-grasping (marriage) was not observed by men before. You were the first to perform it with me; therefore, I now choose you as my husband.
कथं नु मे मनस्विन्याः पाणिमन्यः पुमान्स्पृशेत् ।
गृहीतमृषिपुत्रेण स्वयं वाप्यृषिणा त्वया ॥२१॥
21. kathaṁ nu me manasvinyāḥ pāṇimanyaḥ pumānspṛśet ,
gṛhītamṛṣiputreṇa svayaṁ vāpyṛṣiṇā tvayā.
21. katham nu me manasvinyāḥ pāṇim anyaḥ pumān spṛśet
gṛhītam ṛṣi-putreṇa svayam vā api ṛṣiṇā tvayā
21. How indeed could any other man touch the hand of me, a high-minded woman, a hand that has already been taken by you, whether as a sage or as the son of a sage?
ययातिरुवाच ।
क्रुद्धादाशीविषात्सर्पाज्ज्वलनात्सर्वतोमुखात् ।
दुराधर्षतरो विप्रः पुरुषेण विजानता ॥२२॥
22. yayātiruvāca ,
kruddhādāśīviṣātsarpājjvalanātsarvatomukhāt ,
durādharṣataro vipraḥ puruṣeṇa vijānatā.
22. yayātiḥ uvāca kruddhāt āśī-viṣāt sarpāt jvalanāt
sarvataḥ-mukhāt durādharṣa-taraḥ vipraḥ puruṣeṇa vijānatā
22. Yayāti said: For a discerning person, an enraged Brāhmaṇa is more difficult to challenge or control than a furious venomous serpent or an all-consuming fire.
देवयान्युवाच ।
कथमाशीविषात्सर्पाज्ज्वलनात्सर्वतोमुखात् ।
दुराधर्षतरो विप्र इत्यात्थ पुरुषर्षभ ॥२३॥
23. devayānyuvāca ,
kathamāśīviṣātsarpājjvalanātsarvatomukhāt ,
durādharṣataro vipra ityāttha puruṣarṣabha.
23. devayānī uvāca katham āśīviṣāt sarpāt jvalanāt
sarvatomukhāt durādharṣataraḥ vipraḥ iti āttha puruṣarṣabha
23. Devayani said: "O best among men, how is it, O Brahmin, that you declare someone to be more formidable than a venomous serpent or an all-consuming fire?"
ययातिरुवाच ।
एकमाशीविषो हन्ति शस्त्रेणैकश्च वध्यते ।
हन्ति विप्रः सराष्ट्राणि पुराण्यपि हि कोपितः ॥२४॥
24. yayātiruvāca ,
ekamāśīviṣo hanti śastreṇaikaśca vadhyate ,
hanti vipraḥ sarāṣṭrāṇi purāṇyapi hi kopitaḥ.
24. yayātiḥ uvāca ekam āśīviṣaḥ hanti śastreṇa ekaḥ ca
vadhyate hanti vipraḥ sarāṣṭrāṇi purāṇi api hi kopitaḥ
24. Yayati said: "A venomous snake kills one person, and a single person is killed by a weapon. However, an angered Brahmin destroys entire kingdoms and even cities."
दुराधर्षतरो विप्रस्तस्माद्भीरु मतो मम ।
अतोऽदत्तां च पित्रा त्वां भद्रे न विवहाम्यहम् ॥२५॥
25. durādharṣataro viprastasmādbhīru mato mama ,
ato'dattāṁ ca pitrā tvāṁ bhadre na vivahāmyaham.
25. durādharṣataraḥ vipraḥ tasmāt bhīru mataḥ mama
ataḥ adattām ca pitrā tvām bhadre na vivahāmi aham
25. Yayati said: "Therefore, O timid one, a Brahmin is considered by me to be more formidable. Consequently, O good lady, I cannot marry you if you are not given by your father."
देवयान्युवाच ।
दत्तां वहस्व पित्रा मां त्वं हि राजन्वृतो मया ।
अयाचतो भयं नास्ति दत्तां च प्रतिगृह्णतः ॥२६॥
26. devayānyuvāca ,
dattāṁ vahasva pitrā māṁ tvaṁ hi rājanvṛto mayā ,
ayācato bhayaṁ nāsti dattāṁ ca pratigṛhṇataḥ.
26. devayānī uvāca dattām vahasva pitrā mām tvam hi rājan
vṛtaḥ mayā ayācataḥ bhayam na asti dattām ca pratigṛhṇataḥ
26. Devayani said: "O King, marry me, who has been given by my father, for you have indeed been chosen by me. There is no fear for one who does not ask for a bride, nor for one who accepts a given bride."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
त्वरितं देवयान्याथ प्रेषितं पितुरात्मनः ।
श्रुत्वैव च स राजानं दर्शयामास भार्गवः ॥२७॥
27. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tvaritaṁ devayānyātha preṣitaṁ piturātmanaḥ ,
śrutvaiva ca sa rājānaṁ darśayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ.
27. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tvaritam devayānyā atha preṣitam pituḥ
ātmanaḥ śrutvā eva ca saḥ rājānam darśayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ
27. Vaishampayana said: "Then, Bhargava (Shukracharya), having immediately heard the message sent by Devayani to her own father, presented himself to the king."
दृष्ट्वैव चागतं शुक्रं ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः ।
ववन्दे ब्राह्मणं काव्यं प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतः स्थितः ॥२८॥
28. dṛṣṭvaiva cāgataṁ śukraṁ yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
vavande brāhmaṇaṁ kāvyaṁ prāñjaliḥ praṇataḥ sthitaḥ.
28. dṛṣṭvā eva ca āgatam śukram yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
vavande brāhmaṇam kāvyam prāñjaliḥ praṇataḥ sthitaḥ
28. And having seen Śukra arrive, King Yayāti stood humbly with folded hands and honored the Brahmin, son of Kavya.
देवयान्युवाच ।
राजायं नाहुषस्तात दुर्गे मे पाणिमग्रहीत् ।
नमस्ते देहि मामस्मै नान्यं लोके पतिं वृणे ॥२९॥
29. devayānyuvāca ,
rājāyaṁ nāhuṣastāta durge me pāṇimagrahīt ,
namaste dehi māmasmai nānyaṁ loke patiṁ vṛṇe.
29. devayānī uvāca rājā ayam nāhuṣaḥ tāta durge me pāṇim
agrahīt namaḥ te dehi mām asmai na anyam loke patim vṛṇe
29. Devayānī said, "O father, this King, the son of Nahuṣa, seized my hand in a difficult situation. I bow to you, please give me to him, for I choose no other husband in this world."
शुक्र उवाच ।
वृतोऽनया पतिर्वीर सुतया त्वं ममेष्टया ।
गृहाणेमां मया दत्तां महिषीं नहुषात्मज ॥३०॥
30. śukra uvāca ,
vṛto'nayā patirvīra sutayā tvaṁ mameṣṭayā ,
gṛhāṇemāṁ mayā dattāṁ mahiṣīṁ nahuṣātmaja.
30. śukra uvāca vṛtaḥ anayā patiḥ vīra sutayā tvam mama
iṣṭayā gṛhāṇa imām mayā dattām mahiṣīm nahuṣātmaja
30. Śukra said, "O hero, you have been chosen as husband by my dear daughter. O son of Nahuṣa, accept this queen, whom I have given."
ययातिरुवाच ।
अधर्मो न स्पृशेदेवं महान्मामिह भार्गव ।
वर्णसंकरजो ब्रह्मन्निति त्वां प्रवृणोम्यहम् ॥३१॥
31. yayātiruvāca ,
adharmo na spṛśedevaṁ mahānmāmiha bhārgava ,
varṇasaṁkarajo brahmanniti tvāṁ pravṛṇomyaham.
31. yayātiḥ uvāca adharmaḥ na spṛśet evam mahān mām iha
bhārgava varṇasaṃkarajaḥ brahman iti tvām pravṛṇomi aham
31. Yayāti said, "O son of Bhṛgu, O Brahmin, let no great adharma, which arises from a mixing of social orders, touch me here in this way. Thus, I choose you (as my authority in this matter)."
शुक्र उवाच ।
अधर्मात्त्वां विमुञ्चामि वरयस्व यथेप्षितम् ।
अस्मिन्विवाहे मा ग्लासीरहं पापं नुदामि ते ॥३२॥
32. śukra uvāca ,
adharmāttvāṁ vimuñcāmi varayasva yathepṣitam ,
asminvivāhe mā glāsīrahaṁ pāpaṁ nudāmi te.
32. śukra uvāca adharmāt tvām vimuñcāmi varayasva yathā
īpsitam asmin vivāhe mā glāsīḥ aham pāpam nudāmi te
32. Śukra said, "I release you from any adharma. Choose as you wish. Do not feel any distress in this marriage; I will remove your sin."
वहस्व भार्यां धर्मेण देवयानीं सुमध्यमाम् ।
अनया सह संप्रीतिमतुलां समवाप्स्यसि ॥३३॥
33. vahasva bhāryāṁ dharmeṇa devayānīṁ sumadhyamām ,
anayā saha saṁprītimatulāṁ samavāpsyasi.
33. vahasva bhāryām dharmeṇa devayānīm sumadhyamām
anayā saha saṃprītim atulām samavāpsyasi
33. Marry your wife Devayani, the slender-waisted one, according to dharma. With her, you will attain unparalleled joy.
इयं चापि कुमारी ते शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी ।
संपूज्या सततं राजन्मा चैनां शयने ह्वयेः ॥३४॥
34. iyaṁ cāpi kumārī te śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī ,
saṁpūjyā satataṁ rājanmā caināṁ śayane hvayeḥ.
34. iyam ca api kumārī te śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī
saṃpūjyā satatam rājan mā ca enām śayane hvayeḥ
34. And this maiden, Sharmishtha, daughter of Vrishaparvan, is also to be honored by you always, O King. Do not summon her to your bed.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो ययातिस्तु शुक्रं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् ।
जगाम स्वपुरं हृष्टो अनुज्ञातो महात्मना ॥३५॥
35. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamukto yayātistu śukraṁ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam ,
jagāma svapuraṁ hṛṣṭo anujñāto mahātmanā.
35. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ yayātiḥ tu śukram kṛtvā
pradakṣiṇam jagāma svapuram hṛṣṭaḥ anujñātaḥ mahātmanā
35. Vaishampayana said: Thus addressed, Yayati, after circumambulating Shukra, joyfully went to his own city, having been permitted by the great soul.
