मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततश्चोरक्षयं कृत्वा द्विजेभ्यः पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
वाजिमेधे महायज्ञे विधिवत्कल्पयिष्यति ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tataścorakṣayaṁ kṛtvā dvijebhyaḥ pṛthivīmimām ,
vājimedhe mahāyajñe vidhivatkalpayiṣyati.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Then, after eradicating the thieves, he will duly establish this earth for the twice-born (dvija) through the great Vedic ritual (yajña) called Vājimedha."
स्थापयित्वा स मर्यादाः स्वयम्भुविहिताः शुभाः ।
वनं पुण्ययशःकर्मा जरावान्संश्रयिष्यति ॥२॥
2. sthāpayitvā sa maryādāḥ svayambhuvihitāḥ śubhāḥ ,
vanaṁ puṇyayaśaḥkarmā jarāvānsaṁśrayiṣyati.
2. sthāpayitvā saḥ maryādāḥ svayambhuvihitāḥ śubhāḥ
vanam puṇyayaśaḥkarmā jarāvān saṁśrayiṣyati
2. Having established those auspicious social and moral boundaries (dharma) ordained by the Self-existent (Svayambhū), he, whose actions earned him sacred renown, will resort to the forest when aged.
तच्छीलमनुवर्त्स्यन्ते मनुष्या लोकवासिनः ।
विप्रैश्चोरक्षये चैव कृते क्षेमं भविष्यति ॥३॥
3. tacchīlamanuvartsyante manuṣyā lokavāsinaḥ ,
vipraiścorakṣaye caiva kṛte kṣemaṁ bhaviṣyati.
3. tat śīlam anuvartsyante manuṣyāḥ lokavāsinaḥ
vipraiḥ corakṣaye ca eva kṛte kṣemam bhaviṣyati
3. The inhabitants of the world (manuṣya) will follow his character. And indeed, once the destruction of thieves has been accomplished by the brahmins, well-being and prosperity (kṣema) will prevail.
कृष्णाजिनानि शक्तीश्च त्रिशूलान्यायुधानि च ।
स्थापयन्विप्रशार्दूलो देशेषु विजितेषु च ॥४॥
4. kṛṣṇājināni śaktīśca triśūlānyāyudhāni ca ,
sthāpayanvipraśārdūlo deśeṣu vijiteṣu ca.
4. kṛṣṇājināni śaktīḥ ca triśūlāni āyudhāni ca
sthāpayan vipraśārdūlaḥ deśeṣu vijiteṣu ca
4. And establishing black antelope skins, spears (śakti), tridents, and other weapons in the conquered lands, the foremost among brahmins (vipraśārdūla) (will proceed).
संस्तूयमानो विप्रेन्द्रैर्मानयानो द्विजोत्तमान् ।
कल्किश्चरिष्यति महीं सदा दस्युवधे रतः ॥५॥
5. saṁstūyamāno viprendrairmānayāno dvijottamān ,
kalkiścariṣyati mahīṁ sadā dasyuvadhe rataḥ.
5. saṃstūyamānaḥ viprendraiḥ mānayānaḥ dvijottamān
kalkiḥ cariṣyati mahīm sadā dasyuvadhe rataḥ
5. Being greatly praised by the chief brahmins and honoring the most excellent among the twice-born, Kalki will always traverse the earth, devoted to the slaying of dacoits.
हा तात हा सुतेत्येवं तास्ता वाचः सुदारुणाः ।
विक्रोशमानान्सुभृशं दस्यून्नेष्यति संक्षयम् ॥६॥
6. hā tāta hā sutetyevaṁ tāstā vācaḥ sudāruṇāḥ ,
vikrośamānānsubhṛśaṁ dasyūnneṣyati saṁkṣayam.
6. hā tāta hā suta iti evam tāḥ tāḥ vācaḥ sudāruṇāḥ
vikrośamānān subhṛśam dasyūn neṣyati saṃkṣayam
6. He will lead those dacoits, who cry out very loudly with such dreadful words as 'Alas, father! Alas, son!', to utter destruction.
ततोऽधर्मविनाशो वै धर्मवृद्धिश्च भारत ।
भविष्यति कृते प्राप्ते क्रियावांश्च जनस्तथा ॥७॥
7. tato'dharmavināśo vai dharmavṛddhiśca bhārata ,
bhaviṣyati kṛte prāpte kriyāvāṁśca janastathā.
7. tataḥ adharma-vināśaḥ vai dharma-vṛddhiḥ ca bhārata
bhaviṣyati kṛte prāpte kriyāvān ca janaḥ tathā
7. Thereafter, O descendant of Bharata, there will indeed be the destruction of unrighteousness (adharma) and the growth of natural law (dharma). When the Kṛta Yuga has arrived, people will also become diligent and active (kriyāvān) in their duties.
आरामाश्चैव चैत्याश्च तटाकान्यवटास्तथा ।
यज्ञक्रियाश्च विविधा भविष्यन्ति कृते युगे ॥८॥
8. ārāmāścaiva caityāśca taṭākānyavaṭāstathā ,
yajñakriyāśca vividhā bhaviṣyanti kṛte yuge.
8. ārāmāḥ ca eva caityāḥ ca taṭākāni avaṭāḥ tathā
yajñakriyāḥ ca vividhāḥ bhaviṣyanti kṛte yuge
8. ārāmāḥ ca eva caityāḥ ca taṭākāni avaṭāḥ tathā
vividhāḥ yajñakriyāḥ ca kṛte yuge bhaviṣyanti
8. Indeed, pleasure groves, shrines (chaitya), ponds, and wells, along with various activities related to Vedic rituals (yajña), will come into existence in the Kṛta Yuga (Golden Age).
ब्राह्मणाः साधवश्चैव मुनयश्च तपस्विनः ।
आश्रमाः सहपाषण्डाः स्थिताः सत्ये जनाः प्रजाः ॥९॥
9. brāhmaṇāḥ sādhavaścaiva munayaśca tapasvinaḥ ,
āśramāḥ sahapāṣaṇḍāḥ sthitāḥ satye janāḥ prajāḥ.
9. brāhmaṇāḥ sādhavaḥ ca eva munayaḥ ca tapasvinaḥ
āśramāḥ sahapāṣaṇḍāḥ sthitāḥ satye janāḥ prajāḥ
9. Brahmins, righteous people, sages, and ascetics, along with various spiritual orders (āśrama) and even heterodox sects, will be established as the populace in the age of truth (Satya Yuga).
जास्यन्ति सर्वबीजानि उप्यमानानि चैव ह ।
सर्वेष्वृतुषु राजेन्द्र सर्वं सस्यं भविष्यति ॥१०॥
10. jāsyanti sarvabījāni upyamānāni caiva ha ,
sarveṣvṛtuṣu rājendra sarvaṁ sasyaṁ bhaviṣyati.
10. jāsyanti sarvabījāni upyamānāni ca eva ha
sarveṣu ṛtuṣu rājendra sarvam sasyam bhaviṣyati
10. O king of kings, all seeds that are sown will certainly sprout, and all kinds of grain will be produced in all seasons.
नरा दानेषु निरता व्रतेषु नियमेषु च ।
जपयज्ञपरा विप्रा धर्मकामा मुदा युताः ।
पालयिष्यन्ति राजानो धर्मेणेमां वसुंधराम् ॥११॥
11. narā dāneṣu niratā vrateṣu niyameṣu ca ,
japayajñaparā viprā dharmakāmā mudā yutāḥ ,
pālayiṣyanti rājāno dharmeṇemāṁ vasuṁdharām.
11. narāḥ dāneṣu niratāḥ vrateṣu niyameṣu
ca japayajñaparāḥ viprāḥ
dharmakāmāḥ mudā yutāḥ pālayiṣyanti
rājānaḥ dharmeṇa imām vasuṃdharām
11. narāḥ dāneṣu vrateṣu niyameṣu ca
niratāḥ japayajñaparāḥ dharmakāmāḥ
mudā yutāḥ viprāḥ rājānaḥ dharmeṇa
imām vasuṃdharām pālayiṣyanti
11. Men will be dedicated to acts of giving (dāna), to vows, and to spiritual observances. Brahmins, devoted to the Vedic ritual (yajña) of chanting (japa), desirous of natural law (dharma), and filled with joy, will thrive. Kings will protect this earth according to natural law (dharma).
व्यवहाररता वैश्या भविष्यन्ति कृते युगे ।
षट्कर्मनिरता विप्राः क्षत्रिया रक्षणे रताः ॥१२॥
12. vyavahāraratā vaiśyā bhaviṣyanti kṛte yuge ,
ṣaṭkarmaniratā viprāḥ kṣatriyā rakṣaṇe ratāḥ.
12. vyavahāraratāḥ vaiśyāḥ bhaviṣyanti kṛte yuge
ṣaṭkarmaniratāḥ viprāḥ kṣatriyāḥ rakṣaṇe ratāḥ
12. In the Kṛta Yuga, Vaiśyas will be engaged in trade and business, Brahmins will be devoted to their six prescribed duties, and Kṣatriyas will be engaged in protection.
शुश्रूषायां रताः शूद्रास्तथा वर्णत्रयस्य च ।
एष धर्मः कृतयुगे त्रेतायां द्वापरे तथा ।
पश्चिमे युगकाले च यः स ते संप्रकीर्तितः ॥१३॥
13. śuśrūṣāyāṁ ratāḥ śūdrāstathā varṇatrayasya ca ,
eṣa dharmaḥ kṛtayuge tretāyāṁ dvāpare tathā ,
paścime yugakāle ca yaḥ sa te saṁprakīrtitaḥ.
13. śuśrūṣāyām ratāḥ śūdrāḥ tathā
varṇatrayasya ca eṣaḥ dharmaḥ kṛtayuge
tretāyām dvāpare tathā paścime
yugakāle ca yaḥ saḥ te samprakīrtitaḥ
13. Similarly, Śūdras will be devoted to serving the three other classes. This is the intrinsic nature (dharma) that has been fully declared to you, existing in the Kṛta Yuga, and similarly in the Tretā and Dvāpara Yugas, as well as in the last age (Kali Yuga).
सर्वलोकस्य विदिता युगसंख्या च पाण्डव ।
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातमतीतानागतं मया ।
वायुप्रोक्तमनुस्मृत्य पुराणमृषिसंस्तुतम् ॥१४॥
14. sarvalokasya viditā yugasaṁkhyā ca pāṇḍava ,
etatte sarvamākhyātamatītānāgataṁ mayā ,
vāyuproktamanusmṛtya purāṇamṛṣisaṁstutam.
14. sarvalokasya viditā yugasaṃkhyā
ca pāṇḍava etat te sarvam ākhyātam
atītānāgatam mayā vāyuproktam
anusmṛtya purāṇam ṛṣisaṃstutam
14. And, O Pāṇḍava, the calculation of the yugas is known to all people. All this, the past and the future, has been narrated by me to you, recalling the ancient text declared by Vāyu and praised by sages.
एवं संसारमार्गा मे बहुशश्चिरजीविना ।
दृष्टाश्चैवानुभूताश्च तांस्ते कथितवानहम् ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ saṁsāramārgā me bahuśaścirajīvinā ,
dṛṣṭāścaivānubhūtāśca tāṁste kathitavānaham.
15. evam saṃsāramārgāḥ me bahuśaḥ cirajīvinā dṛṣṭāḥ
ca eva anubhūtāḥ ca tān te kathitavān aham
15. Thus, the many paths of worldly existence (saṃsāra) have been seen and indeed experienced by me, a long-lived one, and I have narrated them to you.
इदं चैवापरं भूयः सह भ्रातृभिरच्युत ।
धर्मसंशयमोक्षार्थं निबोध वचनं मम ॥१६॥
16. idaṁ caivāparaṁ bhūyaḥ saha bhrātṛbhiracyuta ,
dharmasaṁśayamokṣārthaṁ nibodha vacanaṁ mama.
16. idaṃ ca eva aparam bhūyaḥ saha bhrātṛbhiḥ acyuta
dharma-saṃśaya-mokṣa-artham nibodha vacanaṃ mama
16. O unfailing one (Acyuta), listen to these further words of mine, along with your brothers, for the purpose of removing doubts concerning (dharma) natural law.
धर्मे त्वयात्मा संयोज्यो नित्यं धर्मभृतां वर ।
धर्मात्मा हि सुखं राजा प्रेत्य चेह च नन्दति ॥१७॥
17. dharme tvayātmā saṁyojyo nityaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ vara ,
dharmātmā hi sukhaṁ rājā pretya ceha ca nandati.
17. dharme tvayā ātmā saṃyojyaḥ nityam dharma-bhṛtām vara
dharma-ātmā hi sukham rājā pretya ca iha ca nandati
17. O best among those who uphold (dharma) natural law, you should always engage your self (ātman) in (dharma) natural law. For truly, a king whose intrinsic nature (dharma-ātman) is aligned with (dharma) natural law rejoices happily both in this world and after death.
निबोध च शुभां वाणीं यां प्रवक्ष्यामि तेऽनघ ।
न ब्राह्मणे परिभवः कर्तव्यस्ते कदाचन ।
ब्राह्मणो रुषितो हन्यादपि लोकान्प्रतिज्ञया ॥१८॥
18. nibodha ca śubhāṁ vāṇīṁ yāṁ pravakṣyāmi te'nagha ,
na brāhmaṇe paribhavaḥ kartavyaste kadācana ,
brāhmaṇo ruṣito hanyādapi lokānpratijñayā.
18. nibodha ca śubhām vāṇīm yām pravakṣyāmi
te anagha na brāhmaṇe paribhavaḥ
kartavyaḥ te kadācana brāhmaṇaḥ
ruṣitaḥ hanyāt api lokān pratijñayā
18. And O sinless one, listen to the auspicious words that I shall declare to you. Never should any disrespect be shown by you to a brahmin. For an enraged brahmin can destroy even worlds with his solemn vow.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
मार्कण्डेयवचः श्रुत्वा कुरूणां प्रवरो नृपः ।
उवाच वचनं धीमान्परमं परमद्युतिः ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
mārkaṇḍeyavacaḥ śrutvā kurūṇāṁ pravaro nṛpaḥ ,
uvāca vacanaṁ dhīmānparamaṁ paramadyutiḥ.
19. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca mārkaṇḍeya-vacaḥ śrutvā kurūṇām
pravaraḥ nṛpaḥ uvāca vacanam dhīmān paramam parama-dyutiḥ
19. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard Mārkaṇḍeya's words, the intelligent king (nṛpa), who was the foremost among the Kurus and possessed supreme radiance, spoke excellent words.
कस्मिन्धर्मे मया स्थेयं प्रजाः संरक्षता मुने ।
कथं च वर्तमानो वै न च्यवेयं स्वधर्मतः ॥२०॥
20. kasmindharme mayā stheyaṁ prajāḥ saṁrakṣatā mune ,
kathaṁ ca vartamāno vai na cyaveyaṁ svadharmataḥ.
20. kasmin dharme mayā stheyam prajāḥ saṃrakṣatā mune
katham ca vartamānaḥ vai na cyaveyam svadharmataḥ
20. O sage, what natural law (dharma) should I follow while protecting the people? And how, by acting, may I not deviate from my own intrinsic duty (svadharma)?
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
दयावान्सर्वभूतेषु हितो रक्तोऽनसूयकः ।
अपत्यानामिव स्वेषां प्रजानां रक्षणे रतः ।
चर धर्मं त्यजाधर्मं पितॄन्देवांश्च पूजय ॥२१॥
21. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
dayāvānsarvabhūteṣu hito rakto'nasūyakaḥ ,
apatyānāmiva sveṣāṁ prajānāṁ rakṣaṇe rataḥ ,
cara dharmaṁ tyajādharmaṁ pitṝndevāṁśca pūjaya.
21. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca dayāvān sarvabhūteṣu
hitaḥ raktaḥ anasūyakaḥ apatyānām iva
sveṣām prajānām rakṣaṇe rataḥ cara
dharmam tyaja adharmam pitṝn devān ca pūjaya
21. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Be compassionate towards all beings, benevolent, devoted (to their welfare), and free from envy, just as one is engaged in protecting one's own children. Practice natural law (dharma) and abandon unrighteousness (adharma). Worship your ancestors and the gods.
प्रमादाद्यत्कृतं तेऽभूत्संयग्दानेन तज्जय ।
अलं ते मानमाश्रित्य सततं परवान्भव ॥२२॥
22. pramādādyatkṛtaṁ te'bhūtsaṁyagdānena tajjaya ,
alaṁ te mānamāśritya satataṁ paravānbhava.
22. pramādāt yat kṛtam te abhūt samyak dānena tat
jaya alam te mānam āśritya satatam paravān bhava
22. Whatever error you have committed due to negligence, conquer that through proper giving (dāna). Give up relying on your pride; always be dependent (on others' welfare).
विजित्य पृथिवीं सर्वां मोदमानः सुखी भव ।
एष भूतो भविष्यश्च धर्मस्ते समुदीरितः ॥२३॥
23. vijitya pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ modamānaḥ sukhī bhava ,
eṣa bhūto bhaviṣyaśca dharmaste samudīritaḥ.
23. vijitya pṛthivīm sarvām modamānaḥ sukhī bhava
eṣa bhūtaḥ bhaviṣyaḥ ca dharmaḥ te samudiritaḥ
23. Having conquered the entire earth, be joyful and happy. This natural law (dharma), which applies to the past and the future, has been fully declared to you.
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचिदतीतानागतं भुवि ।
तस्मादिमं परिक्लेशं त्वं तात हृदि मा कृथाः ॥२४॥
24. na te'styaviditaṁ kiṁcidatītānāgataṁ bhuvi ,
tasmādimaṁ parikleśaṁ tvaṁ tāta hṛdi mā kṛthāḥ.
24. na te asti aviditam kiñcit atītānāgatam bhuvi
tasmāt imam parikleśam tvam tāta hṛdi mā kṛthāḥ
24. Nothing, neither past nor future, on earth is unknown to you. Therefore, my dear, do not harbor this distress in your heart.
एष कालो महाबाहो अपि सर्वदिवौकसाम् ।
मुह्यन्ति हि प्रजास्तात कालेनाभिप्रचोदिताः ॥२५॥
25. eṣa kālo mahābāho api sarvadivaukasām ,
muhyanti hi prajāstāta kālenābhipracoditāḥ.
25. eṣaḥ kālaḥ mahābāho api sarvadivauka sām
muhyanti hi prajāḥ tāta kālena abhipracoditāḥ
25. O mighty-armed one, this is the time of destiny (kāla) even for all the celestial beings. Indeed, dear one, living beings become deluded when strongly impelled by time (kāla).
मा च तेऽत्र विचारो भूद्यन्मयोक्तं तवानघ ।
अतिशङ्क्य वचो ह्येतद्धर्मलोपो भवेत्तव ॥२६॥
26. mā ca te'tra vicāro bhūdyanmayoktaṁ tavānagha ,
atiśaṅkya vaco hyetaddharmalopo bhavettava.
26. mā ca te atra vicāraḥ bhūt yat mayā uktam tava anagha
atiśaṅkya vacaḥ hi etat dharmalopaḥ bhavet tava
26. And let there be no doubt in you concerning what I have told you, O sinless one. For by questioning this teaching too much, there would be a transgression of your inherent nature (dharma).
जातोऽसि प्रथिते वंशे कुरूणां भरतर्षभ ।
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा सर्वमेतत्समाचर ॥२७॥
27. jāto'si prathite vaṁśe kurūṇāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
karmaṇā manasā vācā sarvametatsamācara.
27. jātaḥ asi prathite vaṃśe kurūṇām bharatarṣabha
karmaṇā manasā vācā sarvam etat samācara
27. O best of the Bharatas, you are born in the illustrious lineage of the Kurus. Therefore, perform all your duties (karma) with action (karma), mind, and speech.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
यत्त्वयोक्तं द्विजश्रेष्ठ वाक्यं श्रुतिमनोहरम् ।
तथा करिष्ये यत्नेन भवतः शासनं विभो ॥२८॥
28. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
yattvayoktaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha vākyaṁ śrutimanoharam ,
tathā kariṣye yatnena bhavataḥ śāsanaṁ vibho.
28. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yat tvayā uktam dvijaśreṣṭha vākyam
śrutimanoharam tathā kariṣye yatnena bhavataḥ śāsanam vibho
28. Yudhiṣṭhira spoke: "O best among the twice-born (dvija) and O mighty one, I will diligently carry out your command, that speech which you delivered, so pleasing to the ear."
न मे लोभोऽस्ति विप्रेन्द्र न भयं न च मत्सरः ।
करिष्यामि हि तत्सर्वमुक्तं यत्ते मयि प्रभो ॥२९॥
29. na me lobho'sti viprendra na bhayaṁ na ca matsaraḥ ,
kariṣyāmi hi tatsarvamuktaṁ yatte mayi prabho.
29. na me lobhaḥ asti viprendra na bhayam na ca matsaraḥ
kariṣyāmi hi tat sarvam uktam yat te mayi prabho
29. "O chief of Brahmins and O lord, I have no greed, no fear, nor envy. Indeed, I shall carry out all that you have instructed me to do."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्य पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः ।
प्रहृष्टाः पाण्डवा राजन्सहिताः शार्ङ्गधन्वना ॥३०॥
30. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā tu vacanaṁ tasya pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
prahṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavā rājansahitāḥ śārṅgadhanvanā.
30. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca śrutvā tu vacanam tasya pāṇḍavasya
mahātmanaḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ rājan sahitāḥ śārṅgadhanvanā
30. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Having heard that speech from the high-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍava, O King, the Pāṇḍavas, along with Kṛṣṇa, the wielder of the Śārṅga bow, became greatly delighted."
तथा कथां शुभां श्रुत्वा मार्कण्डेयस्य धीमतः ।
विस्मिताः समपद्यन्त पुराणस्य निवेदनात् ॥३१॥
31. tathā kathāṁ śubhāṁ śrutvā mārkaṇḍeyasya dhīmataḥ ,
vismitāḥ samapadyanta purāṇasya nivedanāt.
31. tathā kathām śubhām śrutvā mārkaṇḍeyasya dhīmataḥ
vismitāḥ samapadyanta purāṇasya nivedanāt
31. Likewise, having heard the auspicious story from the wise Mārkaṇḍeya, they became astonished by his narration of the ancient lore (purāṇa).
