वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौन्तेयाः शल्यविद्धा इवाभवन् ।
सर्वे चास्वस्थमनसो बभूवुस्ते महारथाः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etacchrutvā tu kaunteyāḥ śalyaviddhā ivābhavan ,
sarve cāsvasthamanaso babhūvuste mahārathāḥ.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā tu kaunteyāḥ śalyaviddhāḥ
iva abhavan sarve ca asvasthamanasaḥ babhūvuḥ te mahārathāḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Indeed, having heard this, the Kuntī's sons became as if pierced by arrows. All those great charioteers became disturbed in mind.
ततः कुन्ती सुतान्दृष्ट्वा विभ्रान्तान्गतचेतसः ।
युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं वचनं सत्यवादिनी ॥२॥
2. tataḥ kuntī sutāndṛṣṭvā vibhrāntāngatacetasaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiramuvācedaṁ vacanaṁ satyavādinī.
2. tataḥ kuntī sutān dṛṣṭvā vibhrāntān gatacetasaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca idam vacanam satyavādinī
2. Then Kunti, who always spoke the truth, seeing her sons bewildered and dispirited, said these words to Yudhishthira.
चिररात्रोषिताः स्मेह ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने ।
रममाणाः पुरे रम्ये लब्धभैक्षा युधिष्ठिर ॥३॥
3. cirarātroṣitāḥ smeha brāhmaṇasya niveśane ,
ramamāṇāḥ pure ramye labdhabhaikṣā yudhiṣṭhira.
3. cirarātroṣitāḥ sma iha brāhmaṇasya niveśane
ramamāṇāḥ pure ramye labdhabhaikṣāḥ yudhiṣṭhira
3. “O Yudhishthira, we have stayed here for a long time in the dwelling of a Brahmin (brāhmaṇa), enjoying ourselves in this charming city and obtaining our alms (bhaikṣā).
यानीह रमणीयानि वनान्युपवनानि च ।
सर्वाणि तानि दृष्टानि पुनः पुनररिंदम ॥४॥
4. yānīha ramaṇīyāni vanānyupavanāni ca ,
sarvāṇi tāni dṛṣṭāni punaḥ punarariṁdama.
4. yāni iha ramaṇīyāni vanāni upavanāni ca
sarvāṇi tāni dṛṣṭāni punaḥ punaḥ arimdama
4. “O suppressor of enemies (arimdama), all the charming forests and groves here have been seen by us again and again.
पुनर्दृष्टानि तान्येव प्रीणयन्ति न नस्तथा ।
भैक्षं च न तथा वीर लभ्यते कुरुनन्दन ॥५॥
5. punardṛṣṭāni tānyeva prīṇayanti na nastathā ,
bhaikṣaṁ ca na tathā vīra labhyate kurunandana.
5. punaḥ dṛṣṭāni tāni eva prīṇayanti na naḥ tathā
bhaikṣam ca na tathā vīra labhyate kurunandana
5. Seeing those same places again does not please us anymore, nor, O hero (vīra), O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), are alms (bhaikṣā) obtained as easily as before.
ते वयं साधु पाञ्चालान्गच्छाम यदि मन्यसे ।
अपूर्वदर्शनं तात रमणीयं भविष्यति ॥६॥
6. te vayaṁ sādhu pāñcālāngacchāma yadi manyase ,
apūrvadarśanaṁ tāta ramaṇīyaṁ bhaviṣyati.
6. te vayam sādhu pāñcālān gacchāma yadi manyase
apūrvadarśanam tāta ramaṇīyam bhaviṣyati
6. “Therefore, if you agree, let us indeed go to the Pañcāla (pāñcāla) lands. My dear one (tāta), seeing new places will be delightful.
सुभिक्षाश्चैव पाञ्चालाः श्रूयन्ते शत्रुकर्शन ।
यज्ञसेनश्च राजासौ ब्रह्मण्य इति शुश्रुमः ॥७॥
7. subhikṣāścaiva pāñcālāḥ śrūyante śatrukarśana ,
yajñasenaśca rājāsau brahmaṇya iti śuśrumaḥ.
7. subhikṣāḥ ca eva pāñcālāḥ śrūyante śatrukaraṣana
yajñasenaḥ ca rājā asau brahmaṇyaḥ iti śuśrumaḥ
7. O subduer of enemies, we hear that the Pañcālas are prosperous, and we have also heard that King Yajñasena (Drupada) is devoted to Brahmins.
एकत्र चिरवासो हि क्षमो न च मतो मम ।
ते तत्र साधु गच्छामो यदि त्वं पुत्र मन्यसे ॥८॥
8. ekatra ciravāso hi kṣamo na ca mato mama ,
te tatra sādhu gacchāmo yadi tvaṁ putra manyase.
8. ekatra cirāvāsaḥ hi kṣamaḥ na ca mataḥ mama te
tatra sādhu gacchāmaḥ yadi tvam putra manyase
8. O son, indeed, a long stay in one place is not suitable and not considered proper by me. Therefore, if you agree, let us go there.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
भवत्या यन्मतं कार्यं तदस्माकं परं हितम् ।
अनुजांस्तु न जानामि गच्छेयुर्नेति वा पुनः ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
bhavatyā yanmataṁ kāryaṁ tadasmākaṁ paraṁ hitam ,
anujāṁstu na jānāmi gaccheyurneti vā punaḥ.
9. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca bhavatyāḥ yat matam kāryam tat asmākam
param hitam anujān tu na jānāmi gaccheyuḥ na iti vā punaḥ
9. Yudhiṣṭhira said, "Whatever course of action you consider appropriate is of supreme benefit to us. However, I do not know whether my younger brothers will agree to go or not."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः कुन्ती भीमसेनमर्जुनं यमजौ तथा ।
उवाच गमनं ते च तथेत्येवाब्रुवंस्तदा ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ kuntī bhīmasenamarjunaṁ yamajau tathā ,
uvāca gamanaṁ te ca tathetyevābruvaṁstadā.
10. vaiśaṁpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ kuntī bhīmasenam arjunam yamajau
tathā uvāca gamanam te ca tathā iti eva abruvan tadā
10. Vaiśaṁpāyana said, "Then Kuntī spoke to Bhīmasena, Arjuna, and the twins about the departure. They, in turn, all said, 'So be it,' at that time."
तत आमन्त्र्य तं विप्रं कुन्ती राजन्सुतैः सह ।
प्रतस्थे नगरीं रम्यां द्रुपदस्य महात्मनः ॥११॥
11. tata āmantrya taṁ vipraṁ kuntī rājansutaiḥ saha ,
pratasthe nagarīṁ ramyāṁ drupadasya mahātmanaḥ.
11. tataḥ āmantrya tam vipram kuntī rājan sutaiḥ saha
pratasthe nagarīm ramyām drupadasya mahātmanaḥ
11. O King, then Kuntī, along with her sons, bid farewell to that Brahmin and set out for the beautiful city of the great-souled Drupada.
