दुर्योधन उवाच ।
अक्षौहिणीः सप्त लब्ध्वा राजभिः सह संजय ।
किं स्विदिच्छति कौन्तेयो युद्धप्रेप्सुर्युधिष्ठिरः ॥१॥

akṣauhiṇīḥ sapta labdhvā rājabhiḥ saha saṁjaya ,
kiṁ svidicchati kaunteyo yuddhaprepsuryudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

1. Duryodhana said: O Sañjaya, what does Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti, who is eager for war, desire, now that he has gathered seven akṣauhiṇī armies along with many kings?
संजय उवाच ।
अतीव मुदितो राजन्युद्धप्रेप्सुर्युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चोभौ यमावपि न बिभ्यतः ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
atīva mudito rājanyuddhaprepsuryudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhīmasenārjunau cobhau yamāvapi na bibhyataḥ.

| bhīmasenārjunau ca ubhau yamau api na bibhyataḥ
2. Sañjaya said: O King, Yudhiṣṭhira, eager for war, is extremely delighted. Both Bhīmasena and Arjuna, as well as the two Yamas (Nākula and Sahadeva), are fearless.
रथं तु दिव्यं कौन्तेयः सर्वा विभ्राजयन्दिशः ।
मन्त्रं जिज्ञासमानः सन्बीभत्सुः समयोजयत् ॥३॥
3. rathaṁ tu divyaṁ kaunteyaḥ sarvā vibhrājayandiśaḥ ,
mantraṁ jijñāsamānaḥ sanbībhatsuḥ samayojayat.
3. rathaṃ tu divyaṃ kaunteyaḥ sarvāḥ vibhrājayat diśaḥ
| mantraṃ jijñāsamānaḥ san bībhatsuḥ samayojayat
3. Indeed, the son of Kunti (Arjuna), also known as Bībhatsu, illuminated all directions with his divine chariot. Being desirous of understanding the divine counsel (mantra), he prepared himself.
तमपश्याम संनद्धं मेघं विद्युत्प्रभं यथा ।
स मन्त्रान्समभिध्याय हृष्यमाणोऽभ्यभाषत ॥४॥
4. tamapaśyāma saṁnaddhaṁ meghaṁ vidyutprabhaṁ yathā ,
sa mantrānsamabhidhyāya hṛṣyamāṇo'bhyabhāṣata.
4. tam apasyāma sannaddham megham vidyutprabham yathā
sa mantrān samabhidhyāya hṛṣyamāṇaḥ abhyabhāṣata
4. We saw him prepared, like a cloud radiant with lightning. He, meditating deeply on the sacred incantations (mantra), spoke with great joy.
पूर्वरूपमिदं पश्य वयं जेष्याम संजय ।
बीभत्सुर्मां यथोवाच तथावैम्यहमप्युत ॥५॥
5. pūrvarūpamidaṁ paśya vayaṁ jeṣyāma saṁjaya ,
bībhatsurmāṁ yathovāca tathāvaimyahamapyuta.
5. pūrvarūpam idam paśya vayam jeṣyāma sañjaya
bībhatsuḥ mām yathā uvāca tathā vaimi aham api uta
5. Sanjaya, behold this omen, we shall surely conquer. For just as Arjuna (Bībhatsu) told me, so too do I understand.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
प्रशंसस्यभिनन्दंस्तान्पार्थानक्षपराजितान् ।
अर्जुनस्य रथे ब्रूहि कथमश्वाः कथं ध्वजः ॥६॥
6. duryodhana uvāca ,
praśaṁsasyabhinandaṁstānpārthānakṣaparājitān ,
arjunasya rathe brūhi kathamaśvāḥ kathaṁ dhvajaḥ.
6. duryodhanaḥ uvāca praśaṃsasi abhinandan tān pārthān
akṣaparājitān arjunasya rathe brūhi katham aśvāḥ katham dhvajaḥ
6. Duryodhana said: "You are praising and commending those sons of Pṛthā (Pārtha) who were defeated by dice. Tell me, how are the horses and what is the banner like on Arjuna's chariot?"
संजय उवाच ।
भौवनः सह शक्रेण बहुचित्रं विशां पते ।
रूपाणि कल्पयामास त्वष्टा धात्रा सहाभिभो ॥७॥
7. saṁjaya uvāca ,
bhauvanaḥ saha śakreṇa bahucitraṁ viśāṁ pate ,
rūpāṇi kalpayāmāsa tvaṣṭā dhātrā sahābhibho.
7. sañjayaḥ uvāca bhauvanaḥ saha śakreṇa bahucitram viśām
pate rūpāṇi kalpayām āsa tvaṣṭā dhātrā saha abhibho
7. Sanjaya said: "O Lord of the people (viśām pate), O mighty one (abhibho), Bhauvana, along with Indra (Śakra), and Tvashṭā, along with Dhātṛ, created many wondrous forms."
ध्वजे हि तस्मिन्रूपाणि चक्रुस्ते देवमायया ।
महाधनानि दिव्यानि महान्ति च लघूनि च ॥८॥
8. dhvaje hi tasminrūpāṇi cakruste devamāyayā ,
mahādhanāni divyāni mahānti ca laghūni ca.
8. dhvaje hi tasmin rūpāṇi cakruḥ te devamāyayā
mahādhanāni divyāni mahānti ca laghūni ca
8. Indeed, upon that banner, they created forms by means of divine illusion (māyā) – magnificent, divine, both great and small.
सर्वा दिशो योजनमात्रमन्तरं स तिर्यगूर्ध्वं च रुरोध वै ध्वजः ।
न संसज्जेत्तरुभिः संवृतोऽपि तथा हि माया विहिता भौवनेन ॥९॥
9. sarvā diśo yojanamātramantaraṁ; sa tiryagūrdhvaṁ ca rurodha vai dhvajaḥ ,
na saṁsajjettarubhiḥ saṁvṛto'pi; tathā hi māyā vihitā bhauvanena.
9. sarvāḥ diśaḥ yojanamātram antaram
saḥ tiryac ūrdhvam ca rurodha vai
dhvajaḥ na saṃsajjet tarubhiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ
api tathā hi māyā vihitā bhauvanena
9. That banner indeed obstructed all directions for a distance of a yojana (a unit of measure), both horizontally and upwards. Even when surrounded by trees, it would not become entangled, for such was the illusion (māyā) created by Bhuvana.
यथाकाशे शक्रधनुः प्रकाशते न चैकवर्णं न च विद्म किं नु तत् ।
तथा ध्वजो विहितो भौवनेन बह्वाकारं दृश्यते रूपमस्य ॥१०॥
10. yathākāśe śakradhanuḥ prakāśate; na caikavarṇaṁ na ca vidma kiṁ nu tat ,
tathā dhvajo vihito bhauvanena; bahvākāraṁ dṛśyate rūpamasya.
10. yathā ākāśe śakradhanuḥ prakāśate
na ca ekavarṇam na ca vidma kim
nu tat tathā dhvajaḥ vihitaḥ
bhauvanena bahvākāram dṛśyate rūpam asya
10. Just as a rainbow (śakradhanuḥ) appears in the sky, and it is not of a single color, nor do we truly know what it is; similarly, the banner created by Bhuvana appears in many forms, and its appearance (rūpa) is seen in diverse ways.
यथाग्निधूमो दिवमेति रुद्ध्वा वर्णान्बिभ्रत्तैजसं तच्छरीरम् ।
तथा ध्वजो विहितो भौवनेन न चेद्भारो भविता नोत रोधः ॥११॥
11. yathāgnidhūmo divameti ruddhvā; varṇānbibhrattaijasaṁ taccharīram ,
tathā dhvajo vihito bhauvanena; na cedbhāro bhavitā nota rodhaḥ.
11. yathā agnidhūmaḥ divam eti ruddhvā
varṇān bibhrat taijasam tat śarīram
tathā dhvajaḥ vihitaḥ bhauvanena
na cet bhāraḥ bhavitā na uta rodhaḥ
11. Just as smoke from fire ascends to the sky, obscuring colors while bearing its own luminous (taijasa) form, similarly, the banner created by Bhuvana will be neither a burden nor an obstruction.
श्वेतास्तस्मिन्वातवेगाः सदश्वा दिव्या युक्ताश्चित्ररथेन दत्ताः ।
शतं यत्तत्पूर्यते नित्यकालं हतं हतं दत्तवरं पुरस्तात् ॥१२॥
12. śvetāstasminvātavegāḥ sadaśvā; divyā yuktāścitrarathena dattāḥ ,
śataṁ yattatpūryate nityakālaṁ; hataṁ hataṁ dattavaraṁ purastāt.
12. śvetāḥ tasmin vāta-vegāḥ sat-aśvāḥ
divyāḥ yuktāḥ citrarathena dattāḥ
śatam yat tat pūryate nityakālam
hatam hatam datta-varam purastāt
12. Divine, white, excellent horses, swift as the wind, were given by Citraratha and yoked there. A hundred of these horses are constantly replenished, having been repeatedly granted as a boon in the past.
तथा राज्ञो दन्तवर्णा बृहन्तो रथे युक्ता भान्ति तद्वीर्यतुल्याः ।
ऋश्यप्रख्या भीमसेनस्य वाहा रणे वायोस्तुल्यवेगा बभूवुः ॥१३॥
13. tathā rājño dantavarṇā bṛhanto; rathe yuktā bhānti tadvīryatulyāḥ ,
ṛśyaprakhyā bhīmasenasya vāhā; raṇe vāyostulyavegā babhūvuḥ.
13. tathā rājñaḥ danta-varṇāḥ bṛhantaḥ
rathe yuktāḥ bhānti tad-vīrya-tulyāḥ
ṛśya-prākhyā bhīmasenasya
vāhāḥ raṇe vāyoḥ tulya-vegāḥ babhūvuḥ
13. Similarly, the king's large, ivory-colored horses, yoked to the chariot, shone, matching his valor. Bhimasena's steeds, resembling antelopes, became equal in speed to the wind in battle.
कल्माषाङ्गास्तित्तिरिचित्रपृष्ठा भ्रात्रा दत्ताः प्रीयता फल्गुनेन ।
भ्रातुर्वीरस्य स्वैस्तुरंगैर्विशिष्टा मुदा युक्ताः सहदेवं वहन्ति ॥१४॥
14. kalmāṣāṅgāstittiricitrapṛṣṭhā; bhrātrā dattāḥ prīyatā phalgunena ,
bhrāturvīrasya svaisturaṁgairviśiṣṭā; mudā yuktāḥ sahadevaṁ vahanti.
14. kalmāṣa-aṅgāḥ tittiri-citra-pṛṣṭhāḥ
bhrātrā dattāḥ prīyatā phalgunena
bhrātuḥ vīrasya svaiḥ turaṅgaiḥ
viśiṣṭāḥ mudā yuktāḥ sahadevam vahanti
14. Dappled-bodied horses with backs marked like partridges were given by the pleased brother Arjuna. Distinguished as the heroic brother's own steeds, they joyfully carry Sahadeva.
माद्रीपुत्रं नकुलं त्वाजमीढं महेन्द्रदत्ता हरयो वाजिमुख्याः ।
समा वायोर्बलवन्तस्तरस्विनो वहन्ति वीरं वृत्रशत्रुं यथेन्द्रम् ॥१५॥
15. mādrīputraṁ nakulaṁ tvājamīḍhaṁ; mahendradattā harayo vājimukhyāḥ ,
samā vāyorbalavantastarasvino; vahanti vīraṁ vṛtraśatruṁ yathendram.
15. mādrī-putram nakulam tu ajamīḍham
mahendra-dattāḥ harayaḥ vāji-mukhyāḥ
samā vāyoḥ balavantaḥ tarasvinaḥ
vahanti vīram vṛtra-śatrum yathā indram
15. And for Nakula, the son of Madri, O Ajamiḍha, there were horses, foremost among steeds, given by Mahendra (Indra). These horses, equal to the wind, strong, and swift, carry the hero (Nakula) just as (other steeds carry) Indra, the foe of Vṛtra.
तुल्याश्चैभिर्वयसा विक्रमेण जवेन चैवाप्रतिरूपाः सदश्वाः ।
सौभद्रादीन्द्रौपदेयान्कुमारान्वहन्त्यश्वा देवदत्ता बृहन्तः ॥१६॥
16. tulyāścaibhirvayasā vikrameṇa; javena caivāpratirūpāḥ sadaśvāḥ ,
saubhadrādīndraupadeyānkumārā;nvahantyaśvā devadattā bṛhantaḥ.
16. tulyāḥ ca ebhiḥ vayasā vikrameṇa
javena ca eva apratirūpāḥ sadaśvāḥ
| saubhadrādīn draupadeyān kumārān
vahanti aśvāḥ devadattāḥ bṛhantaḥ
16. These noble steeds are equal to others in age, valor, and speed, and they are truly unparalleled. These great, divine horses carry Abhimanyu and the other sons of Subhadrā, as well as the sons of Draupadi and other princes.
