वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो मृगसहस्राणि हत्वा विपुलवाहनः ।
राजा मृगप्रसङ्गेन वनमन्यद्विवेश ह ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato mṛgasahasrāṇi hatvā vipulavāhanaḥ ,
rājā mṛgaprasaṅgena vanamanyadviveśa ha.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, having slain thousands of deer, the king, who had a large retinue, entered another forest for the purpose of hunting.
एक एवोत्तमबलः क्षुत्पिपासासमन्वितः ।
स वनस्यान्तमासाद्य महदीरिणमासदत् ॥२॥
2. eka evottamabalaḥ kṣutpipāsāsamanvitaḥ ,
sa vanasyāntamāsādya mahadīriṇamāsadat.
2. ekaḥ eva uttamabalaḥ kṣutpipāsāsamanvitaḥ
saḥ vanasya antaṃ āsādya mahat īriṇaṃ āsadat
2. He, alone and of excellent strength, overcome by hunger and thirst, having reached the edge of the forest, arrived at a vast barren land.
तच्चाप्यतीत्य नृपतिरुत्तमाश्रमसंयुतम् ।
मनःप्रह्लादजननं दृष्टिकान्तमतीव च ।
शीतमारुतसंयुक्तं जगामान्यन्महद्वनम् ॥३॥
3. taccāpyatītya nṛpatiruttamāśramasaṁyutam ,
manaḥprahlādajananaṁ dṛṣṭikāntamatīva ca ,
śītamārutasaṁyuktaṁ jagāmānyanmahadvanam.
3. तत् च अपि अतीत्य नृपतिः
उत्तम-आश्रम-संयुतम् मनः-प्रह्लाद-जननम्
दृष्टि-कान्तम् अतीव च
शीत-मारुत-संयुक्तम् जगाम अन्यत् महत् वनम्
3. The king, having passed even that place, then went to another great forest. This forest was adorned with excellent hermitages, delightful to the mind, exceedingly beautiful to behold, and accompanied by cool breezes.
पुष्पितैः पादपैः कीर्णमतीव सुखशाद्वलम् ।
विपुलं मधुरारावैर्नादितं विहगैस्तथा ॥४॥
4. puṣpitaiḥ pādapaiḥ kīrṇamatīva sukhaśādvalam ,
vipulaṁ madhurārāvairnāditaṁ vihagaistathā.
4. पुष्पितैः पादपैः कीर्णम् अतीव सुख-शाद्वलम्
विपुलम् मधुर-आरावैः नादितम् विहगैः तथा
4. It was covered with blooming trees, exceedingly pleasant with its green meadows, vast, and filled with the sweet calls of birds.
प्रवृद्धविटपैर्वृक्षैः सुखच्छायैः समावृतम् ।
षट्पदाघूर्णितलतं लक्ष्म्या परमया युतम् ॥५॥
5. pravṛddhaviṭapairvṛkṣaiḥ sukhacchāyaiḥ samāvṛtam ,
ṣaṭpadāghūrṇitalataṁ lakṣmyā paramayā yutam.
5. प्रवृद्ध-विटपैः वृक्षैः सुख-च्छायैः समावृतम्
षट्-पद-आघूर्णित-लतम् लक्ष्म्या परमया युतम्
5. It was surrounded by trees with dense branches offering pleasant shade, its creepers swayed by buzzing bees, and endowed with supreme beauty.
नापुष्पः पादपः कश्चिन्नाफलो नापि कण्टकी ।
षट्पदैर्वाप्यनाकीर्णस्तस्मिन्वै काननेऽभवत् ॥६॥
6. nāpuṣpaḥ pādapaḥ kaścinnāphalo nāpi kaṇṭakī ,
ṣaṭpadairvāpyanākīrṇastasminvai kānane'bhavat.
6. न अपुष्पः पादपः कश्चित् न अफलः न अपि कण्टकी
षट्पदैः वा अपि अनाकीर्णः तस्मिन् वै कानने अभवत्
6. Indeed, in that forest, there was no tree that was without flowers, nor without fruit, nor thorny, nor even one not swarming with bees.
विहगैर्नादितं पुष्पैरलंकृतमतीव च ।
सर्वर्तुकुसुमैर्वृक्षैरतीव सुखशाद्वलम् ।
मनोरमं महेष्वासो विवेश वनमुत्तमम् ॥७॥
7. vihagairnāditaṁ puṣpairalaṁkṛtamatīva ca ,
sarvartukusumairvṛkṣairatīva sukhaśādvalam ,
manoramaṁ maheṣvāso viveśa vanamuttamam.
7. विहगैः नादितम् पुष्पैः अलंकृतम्
अतीव च सर्व-ऋतु-कुसुमैः वृक्षैः
अतीव सुख-शाद्वलम् मनः-रमम्
महा-इष्वासः विवेश वनम् उत्तमम्
7. The great archer entered that excellent forest, which resounded with the calls of birds, was exceedingly adorned with flowers, had trees blooming with flowers of all seasons, was exceedingly pleasant with green meadows, and charming to the mind.
मारुतागलितास्तत्र द्रुमाः कुसुमशालिनः ।
पुष्पवृष्टिं विचित्रां स्म व्यसृजंस्ते पुनः पुनः ॥८॥
8. mārutāgalitāstatra drumāḥ kusumaśālinaḥ ,
puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ vicitrāṁ sma vyasṛjaṁste punaḥ punaḥ.
8. mārutāgalitāḥ tatra drumāḥ kusumaśālinaḥ
puṣpavṛṣṭiṃ vicitrāṃ sma vyasṛjan te punaḥ punaḥ
8. There, the flower-laden trees, agitated by the wind, repeatedly released a wondrous shower of blossoms.
दिवस्पृशोऽथ संघुष्टाः पक्षिभिर्मधुरस्वरैः ।
विरेजुः पादपास्तत्र विचित्रकुसुमाम्बराः ॥९॥
9. divaspṛśo'tha saṁghuṣṭāḥ pakṣibhirmadhurasvaraiḥ ,
virejuḥ pādapāstatra vicitrakusumāmbarāḥ.
9. divaspṛśaḥ atha saṃghuṣṭāḥ pakṣibhiḥ madhurasvaraiḥ
virejuḥ pādapāḥ tatra vicitrakusumāmbarāḥ
9. Then, the sky-high trees there, filled with the sweet sounds of birds and adorned with wondrous flower-garments, shone forth beautifully.
तेषां तत्र प्रवालेषु पुष्पभारावनामिषु ।
रुवन्ति रावं विहगाः षट्पदैः सहिता मृदु ॥१०॥
10. teṣāṁ tatra pravāleṣu puṣpabhārāvanāmiṣu ,
ruvanti rāvaṁ vihagāḥ ṣaṭpadaiḥ sahitā mṛdu.
10. teṣām tatra pravāleṣu puṣpabhārāvanāmiṣu
ruvanti rāvaṃ vihagāḥ ṣaṭpadaiḥ sahitā mṛdu
10. There, on their tender branches that were bowed down by the heavy burden of blossoms, birds, accompanied by bees, softly uttered their calls.
तत्र प्रदेशांश्च बहून्कुसुमोत्करमण्डितान् ।
लतागृहपरिक्षिप्तान्मनसः प्रीतिवर्धनान् ।
संपश्यन्स महातेजा बभूव मुदितस्तदा ॥११॥
11. tatra pradeśāṁśca bahūnkusumotkaramaṇḍitān ,
latāgṛhaparikṣiptānmanasaḥ prītivardhanān ,
saṁpaśyansa mahātejā babhūva muditastadā.
11. tatra pradeśān ca bahūn
kusumotkaramaṇḍitān latāgṛhaparikṣiptān
manasaḥ prītivardhanān saṃpaśyan
saḥ mahātejāḥ babhūva muditaḥ tadā
11. There, as that highly energetic one observed many places adorned with heaps of flowers, encompassed by creeper-bowers, and enhancing the mind's delight, he became greatly pleased.
परस्पराश्लिष्टशाखैः पादपैः कुसुमाचितैः ।
अशोभत वनं तत्तैर्महेन्द्रध्वजसंनिभैः ॥१२॥
12. parasparāśliṣṭaśākhaiḥ pādapaiḥ kusumācitaiḥ ,
aśobhata vanaṁ tattairmahendradhvajasaṁnibhaiḥ.
12. parasparāśliṣṭaśākhaiḥ pādapaiḥ kusumācitaiḥ
aśobhata vanaṃ tat taiḥ mahendradhvajasannibhaiḥ
12. That forest shone brilliantly with those trees, which were adorned with flowers, had branches intertwined with one another, and resembled the banners of Mahendra.
सुखशीतः सुगन्धी च पुष्परेणुवहोऽनिलः ।
परिक्रामन्वने वृक्षानुपैतीव रिरंसया ॥१३॥
13. sukhaśītaḥ sugandhī ca puṣpareṇuvaho'nilaḥ ,
parikrāmanvane vṛkṣānupaitīva riraṁsayā.
13. sukhaśītaḥ sugandhī ca puṣpareṇuvahaḥ anilaḥ
parikrāmān vane vṛkṣān upaiti iva riraṃsayā
13. The wind, pleasantly cool, fragrant, and carrying flower pollen, wanders through the forest, approaching the trees as if desiring to play with them.
एवंगुणसमायुक्तं ददर्श स वनं नृपः ।
नदीकच्छोद्भवं कान्तमुच्छ्रितध्वजसंनिभम् ॥१४॥
14. evaṁguṇasamāyuktaṁ dadarśa sa vanaṁ nṛpaḥ ,
nadīkacchodbhavaṁ kāntamucchritadhvajasaṁnibham.
14. evaṃguṇasamāyuktam dadarśa sa vanam nṛpaḥ
nadīkacchodbhavam kāntam ucchritadhvajasaṃnibham
14. The king saw that forest, endowed with such qualities, lovely, situated by river banks, and resembling an area with raised flags.
प्रेक्षमाणो वनं तत्तु सुप्रहृष्टविहंगमम् ।
आश्रमप्रवरं रम्यं ददर्श च मनोरमम् ॥१५॥
15. prekṣamāṇo vanaṁ tattu suprahṛṣṭavihaṁgamam ,
āśramapravaraṁ ramyaṁ dadarśa ca manoramam.
15. prekṣamāṇaḥ vanam tat tu suprahṛṣṭavihaṃgamam
āśramapravaram ramyam dadarśa ca manoramam
15. Beholding that forest, which was filled with very happy birds, he also saw a charming and delightful, excellent āśrama.
नानावृक्षसमाकीर्णं संप्रज्वलितपावकम् ।
यतिभिर्वालखिल्यैश्च वृतं मुनिगणान्वितम् ॥१६॥
16. nānāvṛkṣasamākīrṇaṁ saṁprajvalitapāvakam ,
yatibhirvālakhilyaiśca vṛtaṁ munigaṇānvitam.
16. nānāvṛkṣasamākīrṇam samprajvalitapāvakam
yatibhiḥ vālakhilyaiḥ ca vṛtam munigaṇānvitam
16. It was filled with various trees, where fires blazed brightly, and it was inhabited by ascetics and Vālakhilyas, accompanied by groups of other sages.
अग्न्यागारैश्च बहुभिः पुष्पसंस्तरसंस्तृतम् ।
महाकच्छैर्बृहद्भिश्च विभ्राजितमतीव च ॥१७॥
17. agnyāgāraiśca bahubhiḥ puṣpasaṁstarasaṁstṛtam ,
mahākacchairbṛhadbhiśca vibhrājitamatīva ca.
17. agnyāgāraiḥ ca bahubhiḥ puṣpasaṃstarasaṃstṛtam
mahākacchaiḥ bṛhadbhiḥ ca vibhrājitam atīva ca
17. It was adorned by many fire-houses, carpeted with layers of flowers, and exceedingly splendid with its great and vast riverine banks.
मालिनीमभितो राजन्नदीं पुण्यां सुखोदकाम् ।
नैकपक्षिगणाकीर्णां तपोवनमनोरमाम् ।
तत्र व्यालमृगान्सौम्यान्पश्यन्प्रीतिमवाप सः ॥१८॥
18. mālinīmabhito rājannadīṁ puṇyāṁ sukhodakām ,
naikapakṣigaṇākīrṇāṁ tapovanamanoramām ,
tatra vyālamṛgānsaumyānpaśyanprītimavāpa saḥ.
18. mālinīm abhitaḥ rājan nadīm puṇyām
sukhodakām naikapakṣigaṇākīrṇām
tapovanamanoramām tatra vyālamṛgān
saumyān paśyan prītim avāpa saḥ
18. O King, he saw the sacred river Malini, which had pleasant waters, was thronged by countless flocks of birds, and was as charming as a hermitage. Seeing gentle wild animals there, he experienced delight.
तं चाप्यतिरथः श्रीमानाश्रमं प्रत्यपद्यत ।
देवलोकप्रतीकाशं सर्वतः सुमनोहरम् ॥१९॥
19. taṁ cāpyatirathaḥ śrīmānāśramaṁ pratyapadyata ,
devalokapratīkāśaṁ sarvataḥ sumanoharam.
19. tam ca api atirathaḥ śrīmān āśramam prati
apadyata devalokapratīkāśam sarvataḥ sumanoharam
19. And the illustrious great warrior approached that āśrama, which resembled the celestial world and was delightful in every way.
नदीमाश्रमसंश्लिष्टां पुण्यतोयां ददर्श सः ।
सर्वप्राणभृतां तत्र जननीमिव विष्ठिताम् ॥२०॥
20. nadīmāśramasaṁśliṣṭāṁ puṇyatoyāṁ dadarśa saḥ ,
sarvaprāṇabhṛtāṁ tatra jananīmiva viṣṭhitām.
20. nadīm āśramasaṃśliṣṭām puṇyatoyām dadarśa saḥ
sarvaprāṇabhṛtām tatra jananīm iva viṣṭhitām
20. He saw the river, which was connected to the āśrama and had sacred waters, existing there like a mother to all living creatures.
सचक्रवाकपुलिनां पुष्पफेनप्रवाहिनीम् ।
सकिंनरगणावासां वानरर्क्षनिषेविताम् ॥२१॥
21. sacakravākapulināṁ puṣpaphenapravāhinīm ,
sakiṁnaragaṇāvāsāṁ vānararkṣaniṣevitām.
21. sacakravākapulinām puṣpaphenapravāhinīm
sakinnaragaṇāvāsām vānarakṣaniṣevitām
21. It had banks frequented by cakravāka birds, its current carried foamy blossoms, it was inhabited by groups of Kinnaras, and frequented by monkeys and bears.
पुण्यस्वाध्यायसंघुष्टां पुलिनैरुपशोभिताम् ।
मत्तवारणशार्दूलभुजगेन्द्रनिषेविताम् ॥२२॥
22. puṇyasvādhyāyasaṁghuṣṭāṁ pulinairupaśobhitām ,
mattavāraṇaśārdūlabhujagendraniṣevitām.
22. puṇyasvādhyāyasaṃghuṣṭām pulinaiḥ upaśobhitām
mattavāraṇaśārdūlabhujagendraniṣevitām
22. Its sacred banks resonated with Vedic studies, and it was frequented by rutting elephants, tigers, and mighty snakes.
नदीमाश्रमसंबद्धां दृष्ट्वाश्रमपदं तथा ।
चकाराभिप्रवेशाय मतिं स नृपतिस्तदा ॥२३॥
23. nadīmāśramasaṁbaddhāṁ dṛṣṭvāśramapadaṁ tathā ,
cakārābhipraveśāya matiṁ sa nṛpatistadā.
23. nadīm āśramasambaddhām dṛṣṭvā āśramapadam tathā
cakāra abhipraveśāya matim saḥ nṛpatiḥ tadā
23. Seeing the river associated with the hermitage and also the hermitage grounds, that king then decided to enter.
अलंकृतं द्वीपवत्या मालिन्या रम्यतीरया ।
नरनारायणस्थानं गङ्गयेवोपशोभितम् ।
मत्तबर्हिणसंघुष्टं प्रविवेश महद्वनम् ॥२४॥
24. alaṁkṛtaṁ dvīpavatyā mālinyā ramyatīrayā ,
naranārāyaṇasthānaṁ gaṅgayevopaśobhitam ,
mattabarhiṇasaṁghuṣṭaṁ praviveśa mahadvanam.
24. alaṅkṛtam dvīpavatyā mālinyā
ramyatīrayā naranārāyaṇasthānam
gaṅgayā iva upaśobhitam mattabarhiṇasaṃghuṣṭam
praviveśa mahat vanam
24. He entered the great forest, which was adorned by the Mālinī river with its beautiful banks and islands. It was beautified as if it were the abode of Nara and Nārāyaṇa, splendid like the Gaṅgā, and resounded with the calls of intoxicated peacocks.
तत्स चैत्ररथप्रख्यं समुपेत्य नरेश्वरः ।
अतीव गुणसंपन्नमनिर्देश्यं च वर्चसा ।
महर्षिं काश्यपं द्रष्टुमथ कण्वं तपोधनम् ॥२५॥
25. tatsa caitrarathaprakhyaṁ samupetya nareśvaraḥ ,
atīva guṇasaṁpannamanirdeśyaṁ ca varcasā ,
maharṣiṁ kāśyapaṁ draṣṭumatha kaṇvaṁ tapodhanam.
25. tat saḥ caitrarathaprakhyam samupetya
nareśvaraḥ atīva guṇasampannam
anirdeśyam ca varcasā maharṣim
kāśyapam draṣṭum atha kaṇvam tapodhanam
25. That king, having approached that place which was renowned like Caitraratha's garden, exceedingly endowed with virtues, and indescribable in its splendor, then went to see the great sage Kaśyapa, Kaṇva, whose wealth was tapas.
रथिनीमश्वसंबाधां पदातिगणसंकुलाम् ।
अवस्थाप्य वनद्वारि सेनामिदमुवाच सः ॥२६॥
26. rathinīmaśvasaṁbādhāṁ padātigaṇasaṁkulām ,
avasthāpya vanadvāri senāmidamuvāca saḥ.
26. rathinīm aśvasaṃbādhām padātigaṇasaṃkulām
avasthāpya vanadvāri senām idam uvāca saḥ
26. Having stationed his army, which was comprised of chariots, crowded with horses, and teeming with infantry, at the forest entrance, he spoke this.
मुनिं विरजसं द्रष्टुं गमिष्यामि तपोधनम् ।
काश्यपं स्थीयतामत्र यावदागमनं मम ॥२७॥
27. muniṁ virajasaṁ draṣṭuṁ gamiṣyāmi tapodhanam ,
kāśyapaṁ sthīyatāmatra yāvadāgamanaṁ mama.
27. munim virajasam draṣṭum gamiṣyāmi tapodhanam
kāśyapam sthīyatām atra yāvat आगमनम् mama
27. I will go to see the pure sage Kaśyapa, whose wealth is asceticism. Remain here until my arrival.
तद्वनं नन्दनप्रख्यमासाद्य मनुजेश्वरः ।
क्षुत्पिपासे जहौ राजा हर्षं चावाप पुष्कलम् ॥२८॥
28. tadvanaṁ nandanaprakhyamāsādya manujeśvaraḥ ,
kṣutpipāse jahau rājā harṣaṁ cāvāpa puṣkalam.
28. tat vanam nandanaprakhyam āsādya manujeśvaraḥ
kṣutpipāse jahau rājā harṣam ca avāpa puṣkalam
28. Upon reaching that forest, which resembled the celestial garden Nandan, the king shed his hunger and thirst and experienced immense joy.
सामात्यो राजलिङ्गानि सोऽपनीय नराधिपः ।
पुरोहितसहायश्च जगामाश्रममुत्तमम् ।
दिदृक्षुस्तत्र तमृषिं तपोराशिमथाव्ययम् ॥२९॥
29. sāmātyo rājaliṅgāni so'panīya narādhipaḥ ,
purohitasahāyaśca jagāmāśramamuttamam ,
didṛkṣustatra tamṛṣiṁ taporāśimathāvyayam.
29. sāmātyaḥ rājaliṅgāni saḥ apanīya
narādhipaḥ purohitasahāyaḥ ca jagāma
āśramam uttamam didṛkṣuḥ tatra
tam ṛṣim tapaḥrāśim atha avyayam
29. The king, accompanied by his ministers, removed his royal insignia. Then, with the aid of his priest, he went to that excellent āśrama, eager to behold the imperishable sage there, who was an embodiment of tapas.
ब्रह्मलोकप्रतीकाशमाश्रमं सोऽभिवीक्ष्य च ।
षट्पदोद्गीतसंघुष्टं नानाद्विजगणायुतम् ॥३०॥
30. brahmalokapratīkāśamāśramaṁ so'bhivīkṣya ca ,
ṣaṭpadodgītasaṁghuṣṭaṁ nānādvijagaṇāyutam.
30. brahmalokapratīkāśam āśramam saḥ abhivīkṣya
ca ṣaṭpadodgītasaṅghuṣṭam nānādvijagaṇāyutam
30. And when he beheld that āśrama, which was as splendid as Brahmaloka, resounding with the humming of bees and teeming with various flocks of birds.
ऋचो बह्वृचमुख्यैश्च प्रेर्यमाणाः पदक्रमैः ।
शुश्राव मनुजव्याघ्रो विततेष्विह कर्मसु ॥३१॥
31. ṛco bahvṛcamukhyaiśca preryamāṇāḥ padakramaiḥ ,
śuśrāva manujavyāghro vitateṣviha karmasu.
31. ṛcaḥ bahvṛcamukhyaiḥ ca preryamāṇāḥ padakramaiḥ
śuśrāva manujavyāghraḥ vitateṣu iha karmasu
31. The king, a tiger among men, heard the Ṛg Vedic hymns, which were being chanted by the chief Ṛg Vedic priests with precise word separation, amidst these extensive rituals.
यज्ञविद्याङ्गविद्भिश्च क्रमद्भिश्च क्रमानपि ।
अमितात्मभिः सुनियतैः शुशुभे स तदाश्रमः ॥३२॥
32. yajñavidyāṅgavidbhiśca kramadbhiśca kramānapi ,
amitātmabhiḥ suniyataiḥ śuśubhe sa tadāśramaḥ.
32. yajñavidyāṅgavidbhiḥ ca kramadbhiḥ ca kramān api
amitātmabhiḥ suniyataiḥ śuśubhe saḥ tat āśramaḥ
32. That āśrama was splendid, filled with those who knew the auxiliary sciences of yagya and who expertly recited the krama patterns. These individuals were of boundless spiritual selves and were perfectly self-controlled.
अथर्ववेदप्रवराः पूगयाज्ञिक संमताः ।
संहितामीरयन्ति स्म पदक्रमयुतां तु ते ॥३३॥
33. atharvavedapravarāḥ pūgayājñika saṁmatāḥ ,
saṁhitāmīrayanti sma padakramayutāṁ tu te.

saṃhitām īrayanti sma padakramayutām tu te
33. The preeminent scholars of the Atharvaveda, the yagya performers from assemblies, and revered individuals, recited the Samhitas along with the Pada and Krama methods.
शब्दसंस्कारसंयुक्तं ब्रुवद्भिश्चापरैर्द्विजैः ।
नादितः स बभौ श्रीमान्ब्रह्मलोक इवाश्रमः ॥३४॥
34. śabdasaṁskārasaṁyuktaṁ bruvadbhiścāparairdvijaiḥ ,
nāditaḥ sa babhau śrīmānbrahmaloka ivāśramaḥ.
34. śabdasaṃskārasaṃyuktam bruvadbhiḥ ca aparaiḥ dvijaiḥ
nāditaḥ saḥ babhau śrīmān brahmaloka iva āśramaḥ
34. Resounding with the recitations of other Brahmins, who articulated words with perfect grammar and pronunciation, that glorious ashram shone as if it were Brahmaloka.
यज्ञसंस्कारविद्भिश्च क्रमशिक्षा विशारदैः ।
न्यायतत्त्वार्थविज्ञानसंपन्नैर्वेदपारगैः ॥३५॥
35. yajñasaṁskāravidbhiśca kramaśikṣā viśāradaiḥ ,
nyāyatattvārthavijñānasaṁpannairvedapāragaiḥ.
35. yagñasaṃskāravidbhiḥ ca kramaśikṣā viśāradaiḥ
nyāyatattvārthavijñānasaṃpannaiḥ vedapāragaiḥ
35. And by those who understood yagya rituals, by those skilled in Krama instruction, by those endowed with knowledge of the principles and meanings of Nyāya philosophy, and by those who had mastered the Vedas.
नानावाक्यसमाहारसमवायविशारदैः ।
विशेषकार्यविद्भिश्च मोक्षधर्मपरायणैः ॥३६॥
36. nānāvākyasamāhārasamavāyaviśāradaiḥ ,
viśeṣakāryavidbhiśca mokṣadharmaparāyaṇaiḥ.

36. By those skilled in understanding the collection and systematic harmony of various scriptural statements, and by those who knew special doctrines, and by those solely devoted to the dharma of mokṣa.
स्थापनाक्षेपसिद्धान्तपरमार्थज्ञतां गतैः ।
लोकायतिकमुख्यैश्च समन्तादनुनादितम् ॥३७॥
37. sthāpanākṣepasiddhāntaparamārthajñatāṁ gataiḥ ,
lokāyatikamukhyaiśca samantādanunāditam.

37. By those who had attained true knowledge of propositions, counter-arguments, and established conclusions, and by chief Lokāyatikas, the ashram was made to resound on all sides.
तत्र तत्र च विप्रेन्द्रान्नियतान्संशितव्रतान् ।
जपहोमपरान्सिद्धान्ददर्श परवीरहा ॥३८॥
38. tatra tatra ca viprendrānniyatānsaṁśitavratān ,
japahomaparānsiddhāndadarśa paravīrahā.

38. The slayer of hostile heroes saw, scattered throughout the area, excellent Brahmins who were self-controlled, firm in their vows, devoted to japa and homa, and accomplished.
आसनानि विचित्राणि पुष्पवन्ति महीपतिः ।
प्रयत्नोपहितानि स्म दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमागमत् ॥३९॥
39. āsanāni vicitrāṇi puṣpavanti mahīpatiḥ ,
prayatnopahitāni sma dṛṣṭvā vismayamāgamat.

39. Seeing the diverse, flower-adorned seats that were arranged with great care, the king was filled with wonder.
देवतायतनानां च पूजां प्रेक्ष्य कृतां द्विजैः ।
ब्रह्मलोकस्थमात्मानं मेने स नृपसत्तमः ॥४०॥
40. devatāyatanānāṁ ca pūjāṁ prekṣya kṛtāṁ dvijaiḥ ,
brahmalokasthamātmānaṁ mene sa nṛpasattamaḥ.
40. devatāyatanānāṃ ca pūjām prekṣya kṛtām dvijaiḥ
brahmalokastham ātmānaṃ mene sa nṛpasattamaḥ
40. And having observed the worship of the temples performed by the Brahmins, that excellent king considered himself to be in Brahmaloka.
स काश्यपतपोगुप्तमाश्रमप्रवरं शुभम् ।
नातृप्यत्प्रेक्षमाणो वै तपोधनगणैर्युतम् ॥४१॥
41. sa kāśyapatapoguptamāśramapravaraṁ śubham ,
nātṛpyatprekṣamāṇo vai tapodhanagaṇairyutam.
41. sa kāśyapatapoguptam āśramapravaraṃ śubham na
atṛpyat prekṣamāṇaḥ vai tapodhanagaṇaiḥ yutam
41. He was indeed not satisfied while gazing upon that auspicious, excellent hermitage, which was protected by Kaśyapa's tapas and filled with groups of ascetics.
स काश्यपस्यायतनं महाव्रतैर्वृतं समन्तादृषिभिस्तपोधनैः ।
विवेश सामात्यपुरोहितोऽरिहा विविक्तमत्यर्थमनोहरं शिवम् ॥४२॥
42. sa kāśyapasyāyatanaṁ mahāvratai;rvṛtaṁ samantādṛṣibhistapodhanaiḥ ,
viveśa sāmātyapurohito'rihā; viviktamatyarthamanoharaṁ śivam.

42. Accompanied by his ministers and priest, the slayer of foes entered Kaśyapa's hermitage. It was secluded, exceedingly charming, auspicious, and surrounded on all sides by sages, ascetics, and those observing great vows.
