वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अथ दुर्योधनो राजा तत्र तत्र वने वसन् ।
जगाम घोषानभितस्तत्र चक्रे निवेशनम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
atha duryodhano rājā tatra tatra vane vasan ,
jagāma ghoṣānabhitastatra cakre niveśanam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then King Duryodhana, while residing here and there in the forest, went to the vicinity of the cowherd settlements (ghoṣa). There he established an encampment.
रमणीये समाज्ञाते सोदके समहीरुहे ।
देशे सर्वगुणोपेते चक्रुरावसथं नराः ॥२॥
2. ramaṇīye samājñāte sodake samahīruhe ,
deśe sarvaguṇopete cakrurāvasathaṁ narāḥ.

2. The men established their dwellings in a delightful, well-known place endowed with all qualities, having water and many trees.
तथैव तत्समीपस्थान्पृथगावसथान्बहून् ।
कर्णस्य शकुनेश्चैव भ्रातॄणां चैव सर्वशः ॥३॥
3. tathaiva tatsamīpasthānpṛthagāvasathānbahūn ,
karṇasya śakuneścaiva bhrātṝṇāṁ caiva sarvaśaḥ.
3. tathā eva tat samīpasthān pṛthak avasathān bahūn
karṇasya śakuneḥ ca eva bhrātṝṇām ca eva sarvaśaḥ
3. Similarly, he also saw many separate encampments situated near those (main camps), belonging entirely to Karṇa, to Śakuni, and to all the brothers.
ददर्श स तदा गावः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
अङ्कैर्लक्षैश्च ताः सर्वा लक्षयामास पार्थिवः ॥४॥
4. dadarśa sa tadā gāvaḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
aṅkairlakṣaiśca tāḥ sarvā lakṣayāmāsa pārthivaḥ.
4. dadarśa saḥ tadā gāvaḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
aṅkaiḥ lakṣaiḥ ca tāḥ sarvāḥ lakṣayāmāsa pārthivaḥ
4. Then he (Arjuna) saw hundreds and thousands of cows. That king (pārthivaḥ) marked all of them with brands and distinguishing signs.
अङ्कयामास वत्सांश्च जज्ञे चोपसृतास्त्वपि ।
बालवत्साश्च या गावः कालयामास ता अपि ॥५॥
5. aṅkayāmāsa vatsāṁśca jajñe copasṛtāstvapi ,
bālavatsāśca yā gāvaḥ kālayāmāsa tā api.
5. aṅkayāmāsa vatsān ca jajñe ca upasṛtāḥ tu api
bālavatsāḥ ca yāḥ gāvaḥ kālayāmāsa tāḥ api
5. He marked the calves as well, and he recognized those that had been brought forward. He also separated those cows that had young calves.
अथ स स्मारणं कृत्वा लक्षयित्वा त्रिहायनान् ।
वृतो गोपालकैः प्रीतो व्यहरत्कुरुनन्दनः ॥६॥
6. atha sa smāraṇaṁ kṛtvā lakṣayitvā trihāyanān ,
vṛto gopālakaiḥ prīto vyaharatkurunandanaḥ.
6. atha saḥ smāraṇam kṛtvā lakṣayitvā trihāyanān
vṛtaḥ gopālakaiḥ prītaḥ vyaharat kurunandanaḥ
6. Then he, the delight of the Kurus (kurunandanaḥ), after having made a record and having marked the three-year-olds, delightfully roamed about, surrounded by cowherds.
स च पौरजनः सर्वः सैनिकाश्च सहस्रशः ।
यथोपजोषं चिक्रीडुर्वने तस्मिन्यथामराः ॥७॥
7. sa ca paurajanaḥ sarvaḥ sainikāśca sahasraśaḥ ,
yathopajoṣaṁ cikrīḍurvane tasminyathāmarāḥ.
7. sa ca paurajanaḥ sarvaḥ sainikāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
yathā upajoṣam cikrīḍuḥ vane tasmin yathā amarāḥ
7. And all those city dwellers, along with thousands of soldiers, played in that forest as they pleased, just like immortal beings.
ततो गोपाः प्रगातारः कुशला नृत्तवादिते ।
धार्तराष्ट्रमुपातिष्ठन्कन्याश्चैव स्वलंकृताः ॥८॥
8. tato gopāḥ pragātāraḥ kuśalā nṛttavādite ,
dhārtarāṣṭramupātiṣṭhankanyāścaiva svalaṁkṛtāḥ.
8. tataḥ gopāḥ pragātāraḥ kuśalāḥ nṛttavādite
dhārtarāṣṭram upātiṣṭhan kanyāḥ ca eva svalaṅkṛtāḥ
8. Then, cowherds, skilled singers, and those proficient in dance and music, along with well-adorned maidens, attended upon Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
स स्त्रीगणवृतो राजा प्रहृष्टः प्रददौ वसु ।
तेभ्यो यथार्हमन्नानि पानानि विविधानि च ॥९॥
9. sa strīgaṇavṛto rājā prahṛṣṭaḥ pradadau vasu ,
tebhyo yathārhamannāni pānāni vividhāni ca.
9. saḥ strīgaṇavṛtaḥ rājā prahr̥ṣṭaḥ pradadau vasu
tebhyaḥ yathā arham annāni pānāni vividhāni ca
9. That king, surrounded by a multitude of women and greatly delighted, bestowed wealth upon them according to their worth, along with various kinds of food and drinks.
ततस्ते सहिताः सर्वे तरक्षून्महिषान्मृगान् ।
गवयर्क्षवराहांश्च समन्तात्पर्यकालयन् ॥१०॥
10. tataste sahitāḥ sarve tarakṣūnmahiṣānmṛgān ,
gavayarkṣavarāhāṁśca samantātparyakālayan.
10. tataḥ te sahitāḥ sarve tarakṣūn mahiṣān mr̥gān
gavayaṛkṣavarāhān ca samantāt paryakālayan
10. Then all of them together chased hyenas, buffaloes, deer, as well as gayals, bears, and boars from all sides.
स ताञ्शरैर्विनिर्भिन्दन्गजान्बध्नन्महावने ।
रमणीयेषु देशेषु ग्राहयामास वै मृगान् ॥११॥
11. sa tāñśarairvinirbhindangajānbadhnanmahāvane ,
ramaṇīyeṣu deśeṣu grāhayāmāsa vai mṛgān.
11. saḥ tān śaraiḥ vinirbhindan gajān badhnan
mahāvane ramaṇīyeṣu deśeṣu grāhayāmāsa vai mṛgān
11. In the great forest and its delightful regions, he, piercing animals with arrows and binding elephants, indeed caused wild animals to be captured.
गोरसानुपयुञ्जान उपभोगांश्च भारत ।
पश्यन्सुरमणीयानि पुष्पितानि वनानि च ॥१२॥
12. gorasānupayuñjāna upabhogāṁśca bhārata ,
paśyansuramaṇīyāni puṣpitāni vanāni ca.
12. gorasān upayuñjānaḥ upabhogān ca bhārata
paśyan suramaṇīyāni puṣpitāni vanāni ca
12. O Bhārata, enjoying dairy products and other pleasures, and beholding very delightful, flowering forests.
मत्तभ्रमरजुष्टानि बर्हिणाभिरुतानि च ।
अगच्छदानुपूर्व्येण पुण्यं द्वैतवनं सरः ।
ऋद्ध्या परमया युक्तो महेन्द्र इव वज्रभृत् ॥१३॥
13. mattabhramarajuṣṭāni barhiṇābhirutāni ca ,
agacchadānupūrvyeṇa puṇyaṁ dvaitavanaṁ saraḥ ,
ṛddhyā paramayā yukto mahendra iva vajrabhṛt.
13. mattabhramarajustāni barhiṇābhirutāni
ca agacchat ānupūrvyena puṇyam
dvaitavanam saraḥ ṛddhyā paramayā
yuktaḥ mahendraḥ iva vajrabhṛt
13. He gradually reached the sacred Dvaitavana forest and lake, which was frequented by intoxicated bees and resounded with the cries of peacocks. He was endowed with supreme prosperity, like Mahendra, the wielder of the thunderbolt.
यदृच्छया च तदहो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
ईजे राजर्षियज्ञेन सद्यस्केन विशां पते ।
दिव्येन विधिना राजा वन्येन कुरुसत्तमः ॥१४॥
14. yadṛcchayā ca tadaho dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
īje rājarṣiyajñena sadyaskena viśāṁ pate ,
divyena vidhinā rājā vanyena kurusattamaḥ.
14. yadṛcchayā ca tat ahaḥ dharmaputraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ īje rājarṣiyajñena
sadyaskena viśām pate divyena
vidhinā rājā vanyena kurusattamaḥ
14. viśām pate,
kurusattamaḥ rājā dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ca tat ahaḥ yadṛcchayā divyena vanyena vidhinā sadyaskena rājarṣiyajñena īje.
14. O lord of the people, O best among the Kurus, on that day, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (dharma), by chance, performed a Vedic ritual (yajña) for royal sages, which was immediately effective, utilizing divine methods and resources from the forest.
कृत्वा निवेशमभितः सरसस्तस्य कौरवः ।
द्रौपद्या सहितो धीमान्धर्मपत्न्या नराधिपः ॥१५॥
15. kṛtvā niveśamabhitaḥ sarasastasya kauravaḥ ,
draupadyā sahito dhīmāndharmapatnyā narādhipaḥ.
15. kṛtvā niveśam abhitaḥ sarasaḥ tasya kauravaḥ
draupadyā sahitaḥ dhīmān dharmapatnyā narādhipaḥ
15. Having made their encampment all around that lake, the intelligent king, the Kaurava (Yudhiṣṭhira), was there along with Draupadī, his lawful wife (dharmapatnī).
ततो दुर्योधनः प्रेष्यानादिदेश सहानुजः ।
आक्रीडावसथाः क्षिप्रं क्रियन्तामिति भारत ॥१६॥
16. tato duryodhanaḥ preṣyānādideśa sahānujaḥ ,
ākrīḍāvasathāḥ kṣipraṁ kriyantāmiti bhārata.
16. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ preṣyān ādiśat sahānujaḥ
ākīḍāvasathāḥ kṣipram kriyantām iti bhārata
16. Then Duryodhana, accompanied by his younger brother, ordered his messengers, 'Let pleasure-houses be quickly built!' O Bhārata.
ते तथेत्येव कौरव्यमुक्त्वा वचनकारिणः ।
चिकीर्षन्तस्तदाक्रीडाञ्जग्मुर्द्वैतवनं सरः ॥१७॥
17. te tathetyeva kauravyamuktvā vacanakāriṇaḥ ,
cikīrṣantastadākrīḍāñjagmurdvaitavanaṁ saraḥ.
17. te tathā iti eva kauravyam uktvā vacanakāriṇaḥ
cikīrṣantaḥ tadā ākīḍān jagmuḥ dvaitavanam saras
17. Then, having said 'So be it' to the Kaurava (Duryodhana), those obedient messengers, desiring to build pleasure-houses, went to the Dvaita lake.
सेनाग्रं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य प्राप्तं द्वैतवनं सरः ।
प्रविशन्तं वनद्वारि गन्धर्वाः समवारयन् ॥१८॥
18. senāgraṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya prāptaṁ dvaitavanaṁ saraḥ ,
praviśantaṁ vanadvāri gandharvāḥ samavārayan.
18. senāgram dhārtarāṣṭrasya prāptam dvaitavanam
saras praviśantam vanadvāri gandharvāḥ samavārayan
18. When the vanguard of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's army reached Dvaitavana lake and was entering the forest gate, the Gandharvas obstructed them.
तत्र गन्धर्वराजो वै पूर्वमेव विशां पते ।
कुबेरभवनाद्राजन्नाजगाम गणावृतः ॥१९॥
19. tatra gandharvarājo vai pūrvameva viśāṁ pate ,
kuberabhavanādrājannājagāma gaṇāvṛtaḥ.
19. tatra gandharvarājaḥ vai pūrvam eva viśām
pate kuberabhavanāt rājan ājagāma gaṇāvṛtaḥ
19. Indeed, O lord of the people, O king, the Gandharva king had already arrived there from Kubera's palace, accompanied by his retinue.
गणैरप्सरसां चैव त्रिदशानां तथात्मजैः ।
विहारशीलः क्रीडार्थं तेन तत्संवृतं सरः ॥२०॥
20. gaṇairapsarasāṁ caiva tridaśānāṁ tathātmajaiḥ ,
vihāraśīlaḥ krīḍārthaṁ tena tatsaṁvṛtaṁ saraḥ.
20. gaṇaiḥ apsarasām ca eva tridaśānām tathā ātmajaiḥ
vihāraśīlaḥ krīḍārtham tena tat saṃvṛtam saraḥ
20. Being fond of pleasure and recreation, that lake was occupied by him (the Gandharva king) along with his retinue, Apsaras, and the sons of the gods.
तेन तत्संवृतं दृष्ट्वा ते राजपरिचारकाः ।
प्रतिजग्मुस्ततो राजन्यत्र दुर्योधनो नृपः ॥२१॥
21. tena tatsaṁvṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā te rājaparicārakāḥ ,
pratijagmustato rājanyatra duryodhano nṛpaḥ.
21. tena tat saṃvṛtam dṛṣṭvā te rājaparicārakāḥ
pratijagmuḥ tataḥ rājan yatra duryodhanaḥ nṛpaḥ
21. O king, upon seeing that lake occupied by him (the Gandharva king), those royal attendants returned from there to where King Duryodhana was.
स तु तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा सैनिकान्युद्धदुर्मदान् ।
प्रेषयामास कौरव्य उत्सारयत तानिति ॥२२॥
22. sa tu teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā sainikānyuddhadurmadān ,
preṣayāmāsa kauravya utsārayata tāniti.
22. saḥ tu teṣām vacaḥ śrutvā sainikān yuddhadurmadān
preṣayāmāsa kauravya utsārayata tān iti
22. But he, Duryodhana (O descendant of Kuru), upon hearing their report, sent forth soldiers, who were fierce and arrogant in battle, with the command: "Drive them away!"
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राज्ञः सेनाग्रयायिनः ।
सरो द्वैतवनं गत्वा गन्धर्वानिदमब्रुवन् ॥२३॥
23. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā rājñaḥ senāgrayāyinaḥ ,
saro dvaitavanaṁ gatvā gandharvānidamabruvan.
23. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā rājñaḥ senāgrayāyinaḥ
saraḥ dvaitavanam gatvā gandharvān idam abruvan
23. Having heard that command from the king, the leaders of the army went to Dvaitavana Lake and said this to the Gandharvas.
राजा दुर्योधनो नाम धृतराष्ट्रसुतो बली ।
विजिहीर्षुरिहायाति तदर्थमपसर्पत ॥२४॥
24. rājā duryodhano nāma dhṛtarāṣṭrasuto balī ,
vijihīrṣurihāyāti tadarthamapasarpata.
24. rājā duryodhanaḥ nāma dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaḥ balī
vijihīrṣuḥ iha āyāti tat artham apasarpata
24. King Duryodhana, the mighty son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, is coming here, intending to enjoy himself. Therefore, you all must withdraw!
एवमुक्तास्तु गन्धर्वाः प्रहसन्तो विशां पते ।
प्रत्यब्रुवंस्तान्पुरुषानिदं सुपरुषं वचः ॥२५॥
25. evamuktāstu gandharvāḥ prahasanto viśāṁ pate ,
pratyabruvaṁstānpuruṣānidaṁ suparuṣaṁ vacaḥ.
25. evam uktāḥ tu gandharvāḥ prahasantaḥ viśām pate
prati abruvan tān puruṣān idam suparuṣam vacaḥ
25. However, upon being addressed in this manner, the Gandharvas, laughing, O ruler of the people, replied to those men with these exceedingly harsh words.
न चेतयति वो राजा मन्दबुद्धिः सुयोधनः ।
योऽस्मानाज्ञापयत्येवं वश्यानिव दिवौकसः ॥२६॥
26. na cetayati vo rājā mandabuddhiḥ suyodhanaḥ ,
yo'smānājñāpayatyevaṁ vaśyāniva divaukasaḥ.
26. na cetayati vaḥ rājā mandabuddhiḥ suyodhanaḥ
yaḥ asmān ājñāpayati evam vaśyān iva divaukasaḥ
26. That dull-witted King Suyodhana (Duryodhana) does not recognize (our true nature); he who commands us, who are celestial beings, as if we were his obedient servants.
यूयं मुमूर्षवश्चापि मन्दप्रज्ञा न संशयः ।
ये तस्य वचनादेवमस्मान्ब्रूत विचेतसः ॥२७॥
27. yūyaṁ mumūrṣavaścāpi mandaprajñā na saṁśayaḥ ,
ye tasya vacanādevamasmānbrūta vicetasaḥ.
27. yūyam mumūrṣavaḥ ca api mandaprajñāḥ na saṃśayaḥ
ye tasya vacanāt evam asmān brūta vicetasaḥ
27. You are indeed desirous of death, and undoubtedly dull-witted. You senseless ones, who speak to us thus merely by his command.
गच्छत त्वरिताः सर्वे यत्र राजा स कौरवः ।
द्वेष्यं माद्यैव गच्छध्वं धर्मराजनिवेशनम् ॥२८॥
28. gacchata tvaritāḥ sarve yatra rājā sa kauravaḥ ,
dveṣyaṁ mādyaiva gacchadhvaṁ dharmarājaniveśanam.
28. gacchata tvaritāḥ sarve yatra rājā sa kauravaḥ
dveṣyam mādya eva gacchadhvam dharmarājaniveśanam
28. All of you, go quickly to where that Kuru king (Duryodhana) is. And indeed, go to the dwelling of King Yudhiṣṭhira, (to witness) the hateful (sight), as if in a daze.
एवमुक्तास्तु गन्धर्वै राज्ञः सेनाग्रयायिनः ।
संप्राद्रवन्यतो राजा धृतराष्ट्रसुतोऽभवत् ॥२९॥
29. evamuktāstu gandharvai rājñaḥ senāgrayāyinaḥ ,
saṁprādravanyato rājā dhṛtarāṣṭrasuto'bhavat.
29. evam uktāḥ tu gandharvaiḥ rājñaḥ senāgrayāyinaḥ
samprādravan yataḥ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaḥ abhavat
29. Thus addressed by the Gandharvas, the leaders of the king's army fled to the place where King Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) was.
