युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
श्रुतं प्रियमिदं कृष्ण यत्त्वमर्हसि भाषितुम् ।
तन्मेऽमृतरसप्रख्यं मनो ह्लादयते विभो ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
śrutaṁ priyamidaṁ kṛṣṇa yattvamarhasi bhāṣitum ,
tanme'mṛtarasaprakhyaṁ mano hlādayate vibho.

1. Yudhishthira said: "Krishna, I have heard these dear words which you are worthy to speak. That, which resembles the taste of nectar, delights my mind, O Lord."
बहूनि किल युद्धानि विजयस्य नराधिपैः ।
पुनरासन्हृषीकेश तत्र तत्रेति मे श्रुतम् ॥२॥
2. bahūni kila yuddhāni vijayasya narādhipaiḥ ,
punarāsanhṛṣīkeśa tatra tatreti me śrutam.
2. bahūni kila yuddhāni vijayasya narādhipaiḥ
punaḥ āsan hṛṣīkeśa tatra tatra iti me śrutam
2. hṛṣīkeśa kila vijayasya narādhipaiḥ bahūni

2. Indeed, many battles of Vijaya (Arjuna) with kings occurred again and again in various places, O Hrishikesha; this I have heard.
मन्निमित्तं हि स सदा पार्थः सुखविवर्जितः ।
अतीव विजयो धीमानिति मे दूयते मनः ॥३॥
3. mannimittaṁ hi sa sadā pārthaḥ sukhavivarjitaḥ ,
atīva vijayo dhīmāniti me dūyate manaḥ.
3. mat nimittam hi saḥ sadā pārthaḥ sukhavivarjitaḥ
atīva vijayaḥ dhīmān iti me dūyate manaḥ
3. hi mat nimittam saḥ dhīmān vijayaḥ pārthaḥ
sadā sukhavivarjitaḥ atīva iti me manaḥ dūyate
3. Indeed, because of me, that intelligent Vijaya (Arjuna) was always exceedingly devoid of happiness; thus my mind grieves.
संचिन्तयामि वार्ष्णेय सदा कुन्तीसुतं रहः ।
किं नु तस्य शरीरेऽस्ति सर्वलक्षणपूजिते ।
अनिष्टं लक्षणं कृष्ण येन दुःखान्युपाश्नुते ॥४॥
4. saṁcintayāmi vārṣṇeya sadā kuntīsutaṁ rahaḥ ,
kiṁ nu tasya śarīre'sti sarvalakṣaṇapūjite ,
aniṣṭaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ kṛṣṇa yena duḥkhānyupāśnute.
4. saṃcintayāmi vārṣṇeya sadā kuntīsutaṃ
rahaḥ kim nu tasya śarīre asti
sarvalakṣaṇapūjite aniṣṭaṃ
lakṣaṇaṃ kṛṣṇa yena duḥkhāni upāśnute
4. vārṣṇeya kṛṣṇa,
sadā rahaḥ kuntīsutaṃ saṃcintayāmi.
sarvalakṣaṇapūjite tasya śarīre aniṣṭaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ kim nu asti,
yena duḥkhāni upāśnute?
4. O Vārṣṇeya (Krishna), I constantly ponder in private about Kunti's son (Arjuna). What inauspicious mark could possibly be in his body, which is revered for all its auspicious signs, O Krishna, that causes him to experience so many sufferings?
अतीव दुःखभागी स सततं कुन्तिनन्दनः ।
न च पश्यामि बीभत्सोर्निन्द्यं गात्रेषु किंचन ।
श्रोतव्यं चेन्मयैतद्वै तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥५॥
5. atīva duḥkhabhāgī sa satataṁ kuntinandanaḥ ,
na ca paśyāmi bībhatsornindyaṁ gātreṣu kiṁcana ,
śrotavyaṁ cenmayaitadvai tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.
5. atīva duḥkhabhāgī sa satataṃ
kuntīnandanaḥ na ca paśyāmi bībhatsoḥ
nindyaṃ gātreṣu kiṃcana śrotavyaṃ cet
mayā etat vai tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
5. sa kuntīnandanaḥ atīva satataṃ duḥkhabhāgī.
ca na paśyāmi bībhatsoḥ gātreṣu kiṃcana nindyaṃ.
cet etat vai mayā śrotavyaṃ,
tat me vyākhyātum arhasi.
5. That son of Kunti (Arjuna) constantly experiences great suffering. Yet I see nothing blameworthy in the body of Bibhatsu (Arjuna). If this indeed ought to be revealed to me, then you should explain it.
इत्युक्तः स हृषीकेशो ध्यात्वा सुमहदन्तरम् ।
राजानं भोजराजन्यवर्धनो विष्णुरब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. ityuktaḥ sa hṛṣīkeśo dhyātvā sumahadantaram ,
rājānaṁ bhojarājanyavardhano viṣṇurabravīt.
6. iti uktaḥ sa hṛṣīkeśaḥ dhyātvā sumahat antaram
rājānaṃ bhojarājanyavardhanaḥ viṣṇuḥ abravīt
6. iti uktaḥ sa hṛṣīkeśaḥ,
bhojarājanyavardhanaḥ viṣṇuḥ sumahat antaram dhyātvā,
rājānaṃ abravīt.
6. Thus addressed, Hrishikesha (Krishna), Vishnu, the augmenter of the kings of Bhoja, having deeply considered the profound matter, spoke to the king.
न ह्यस्य नृपते किंचिदनिष्टमुपलक्षये ।
ऋते पुरुषसिंहस्य पिण्डिकेऽस्यातिकायतः ॥७॥
7. na hyasya nṛpate kiṁcidaniṣṭamupalakṣaye ,
ṛte puruṣasiṁhasya piṇḍike'syātikāyataḥ.
7. na hi asya nṛpate kiṃcit aniṣṭaṃ upalakṣaye
ṛte puruṣasiṃhasya piṇḍike asya atikāyataḥ
7. nṛpate,
hi na upalakṣaye asya kiṃcit aniṣṭaṃ,
ṛte puruṣasiṃhasya asya atikāyataḥ piṇḍike.
7. O King, I certainly do not perceive anything inauspicious in him, except for the calves of this lion among men (Arjuna), which are exceedingly long.
ताभ्यां स पुरुषव्याघ्रो नित्यमध्वसु युज्यते ।
न ह्यन्यदनुपश्यामि येनासौ दुःखभाग्जयः ॥८॥
8. tābhyāṁ sa puruṣavyāghro nityamadhvasu yujyate ,
na hyanyadanupaśyāmi yenāsau duḥkhabhāgjayaḥ.
8. tābhyām saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ nityam adhvasu yujyate
na hi anyat anupaśyāmi yena asau duḥkhabhāg jayaḥ
8. saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ tābhyām adhvasu nityam yujyate hi anyat na anupaśyāmi,
yena asau duḥkhabhāg jayaḥ
8. That best of persons (puruṣa) is always engaged in his endeavors by those two (qualities/means). Indeed, I do not see anything else by which he, who experiences sorrow, could achieve victory.
इत्युक्तः स कुरुश्रेष्ठस्तथ्यं कृष्णेन धीमता ।
प्रोवाच वृष्णिशार्दूलमेवमेतदिति प्रभो ॥९॥
9. ityuktaḥ sa kuruśreṣṭhastathyaṁ kṛṣṇena dhīmatā ,
provāca vṛṣṇiśārdūlamevametaditi prabho.
9. iti uktaḥ saḥ kuruśreṣṭhaḥ tathyām kṛṣṇena
dhīmatā provāca vṛṣṇiśārdūlam evam etat iti prabho
9. prabho,
dhīmatā kṛṣṇena iti tathyām uktaḥ saḥ kuruśreṣṭhaḥ vṛṣṇiśārdūlam evam etat iti provāca
9. O lord, thus addressed truthfully by the intelligent Kṛṣṇa, that best of Kurus said to the tiger among Vṛṣṇis, 'This is indeed so!'
कृष्णा तु द्रौपदी कृष्णं तिर्यक्सासूयमैक्षत ।
प्रतिजग्राह तस्यास्तं प्रणयं चापि केशिहा ।
सख्युः सखा हृषीकेशः साक्षादिव धनंजयः ॥१०॥
10. kṛṣṇā tu draupadī kṛṣṇaṁ tiryaksāsūyamaikṣata ,
pratijagrāha tasyāstaṁ praṇayaṁ cāpi keśihā ,
sakhyuḥ sakhā hṛṣīkeśaḥ sākṣādiva dhanaṁjayaḥ.
10. kṛṣṇā tu draupadī kṛṣṇam tiryak
sāsūyam aikṣata pratijagrāha tasyāḥ tam
praṇayam ca api keśihā sakhyuḥ
sakhā hṛṣīkeśaḥ sākṣāt iva dhanañjayaḥ
10. tu kṛṣṇā draupadī kṛṣṇam tiryak sāsūyam aikṣata.
ca api keśihā tasyāḥ tam praṇayam pratijagrāha.
hṛṣīkeśaḥ dhanañjayaḥ sakhyuḥ sakhā sākṣāt iva
10. But Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā) looked askance at Kṛṣṇa, expressing subtle resentment. And Keśihā (Kṛṣṇa) accepted her affection (praṇaya). Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa) was a true friend to his companion Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), as if directly present.
तत्र भीमादयस्ते तु कुरवो यादवास्तथा ।
रेमुः श्रुत्वा विचित्रार्था धनंजयकथा विभो ॥११॥
11. tatra bhīmādayaste tu kuravo yādavāstathā ,
remuḥ śrutvā vicitrārthā dhanaṁjayakathā vibho.
11. tatra bhīmādayaḥ te tu kuravaḥ yādavāḥ tathā
remuḥ śrutvā vicitrārthāḥ dhanañjayakathāḥ vibho
11. vibho,
tatra tu te bhīmādayaḥ kuravaḥ tathā yādavāḥ vicitrārthāḥ dhanañjayakathāḥ śrutvā remuḥ
11. O lord, there, Bhīma and others, those Kurus and also the Yadavas, rejoiced after hearing the wonderful stories of Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
तथा कथयतामेव तेषामर्जुनसंकथाः ।
उपायाद्वचनान्मर्त्यो विजयस्य महात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. tathā kathayatāmeva teṣāmarjunasaṁkathāḥ ,
upāyādvacanānmartyo vijayasya mahātmanaḥ.
12. tathā kathayatām eva teṣām arjunasaṃkathāḥ
upāyāt vacanāt martyaḥ vijayasya mahātmanaḥ
12. tathā teṣām eva arjunasaṃkathāḥ kathayatām
martyaḥ mahātmanaḥ vijayasya vacanāt upāyāt
12. Thus, while they were narrating the stories of Arjuna, a man approached, prompted by the words of the great-souled Arjuna (Vijaya).
सोऽभिगम्य कुरुश्रेष्ठं नमस्कृत्य च बुद्धिमान् ।
उपायातं नरव्याघ्रमर्जुनं प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥१३॥
13. so'bhigamya kuruśreṣṭhaṁ namaskṛtya ca buddhimān ,
upāyātaṁ naravyāghramarjunaṁ pratyavedayat.
13. saḥ abhigamya kuruśreṣṭham namaskṛtya ca buddhimān
upāyātam naravyāghram arjunam pratyavedayat
13. ca buddhimān saḥ kuruśreṣṭham abhigamya namaskṛtya
naravyāghram arjunam upāyātam pratyavedayat
13. And the intelligent man, having approached the best of the Kurus and paid his respects, reported that Arjuna, the tiger among men, had arrived.
तच्छ्रुत्वा नृपतिस्तस्य हर्षबाष्पाकुलेक्षणः ।
प्रियाख्याननिमित्तं वै ददौ बहु धनं तदा ॥१४॥
14. tacchrutvā nṛpatistasya harṣabāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ ,
priyākhyānanimittaṁ vai dadau bahu dhanaṁ tadā.
14. tat śrutvā nṛpatiḥ tasya harṣabāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ
priyākhyānanimittam vai dadau bahu dhanam tadā
14. tat śrutvā tadā nṛpatiḥ harṣabāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ
vai priyākhyānanimittam tasya bahu dhanam dadau
14. Having heard that, the king, whose eyes were agitated by tears of joy, then indeed gave much wealth to him (the messenger) for delivering the good news.
ततो द्वितीये दिवसे महाञ्शब्दो व्यवर्धत ।
आयाति पुरुषव्याघ्रे पाण्डवानां धुरंधरे ॥१५॥
15. tato dvitīye divase mahāñśabdo vyavardhata ,
āyāti puruṣavyāghre pāṇḍavānāṁ dhuraṁdhare.
15. tataḥ dvitīye divase mahān śabdaḥ vyavardhata
āyāti puruṣavyāghre pāṇḍavānām dhurandhare
15. tataḥ dvitīye divase mahān śabdaḥ vyavardhata
pāṇḍavānām dhurandhare puruṣavyāghre āyāti
15. Then, on the second day, a great commotion arose as the man-tiger, the chief (dhurandhara) of the Pāṇḍavas, was arriving.
ततो रेणुः समुद्भूतो विबभौ तस्य वाजिनः ।
अभितो वर्तमानस्य यथोच्चैःश्रवसस्तथा ॥१६॥
16. tato reṇuḥ samudbhūto vibabhau tasya vājinaḥ ,
abhito vartamānasya yathoccaiḥśravasastathā.
16. tataḥ reṇuḥ samudbhūtaḥ vibabhau tasya vājinaḥ
abhitaḥ vartamānasya yathā uccaiḥśravasaḥ tathā
16. tataḥ tasya abhitaḥ vartamānasya vājinaḥ samudbhūtaḥ
reṇuḥ yathā uccaiḥśravasaḥ tathā vibabhau
16. Then, the dust that rose from that horse, as it moved all around, gleamed like (the divine horse) Uccaiḥśravas.
तत्र हर्षकला वाचो नराणां शुश्रुवेऽर्जुनः ।
दिष्ट्यासि पार्थ कुशली धन्यो राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥१७॥
17. tatra harṣakalā vāco narāṇāṁ śuśruve'rjunaḥ ,
diṣṭyāsi pārtha kuśalī dhanyo rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
17. tatra harṣakalāḥ vācaḥ narāṇām śuśruve arjunaḥ
diṣṭyā asi pārtha kuśalī dhanyaḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
17. tatra arjunaḥ narāṇām harṣakalāḥ vācaḥ śuśruve
pārtha diṣṭyā asi kuśalī rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dhanyaḥ
17. There, Arjuna heard joyful exclamations from the men: 'By good fortune, you, Pārtha, are well! Blessed is King Yudhiṣṭhira!'
कोऽन्यो हि पृथिवीं कृत्स्नामवजित्य सपार्थिवाम् ।
चारयित्वा हयश्रेष्ठमुपायायादृतेऽर्जुनम् ॥१८॥
18. ko'nyo hi pṛthivīṁ kṛtsnāmavajitya sapārthivām ,
cārayitvā hayaśreṣṭhamupāyāyādṛte'rjunam.
18. kaḥ anyaḥ hi pṛthivīm kṛtsnām avajitya sapārthivām
cārayitvā hayaśreṣṭham upāyāyāt ṛte arjunam
18. arjunam ṛte kaḥ anyaḥ hi sapārthivām kṛtsnām
pṛthivīm avajitya hayaśreṣṭham cārayitvā upāyāyāt
18. Who else, indeed, apart from Arjuna, after conquering the entire earth with its rulers and making the finest horse roam freely, would be able to return?
ये व्यतीता महात्मानो राजानः सगरादयः ।
तेषामपीदृशं कर्म न किंचिदनुशुश्रुम ॥१९॥
19. ye vyatītā mahātmāno rājānaḥ sagarādayaḥ ,
teṣāmapīdṛśaṁ karma na kiṁcidanuśuśruma.
19. ye vyatītāḥ mahātmānaḥ rājānaḥ sagarādayaḥ
teṣām api īdṛśam karma na kiñcit anuśuśruma
19. ye vyatītāḥ mahātmānaḥ rājānaḥ sagarādayaḥ
teṣām api īdṛśam karma kiñcit na anuśuśruma
19. We have never heard of any such deed (karma), even a small one, from those great-souled kings of the past, like Sagara and others.
नैतदन्ये करिष्यन्ति भविष्याः पृथिवीक्षितः ।
यत्त्वं कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ दुष्करं कृतवानिह ॥२०॥
20. naitadanye kariṣyanti bhaviṣyāḥ pṛthivīkṣitaḥ ,
yattvaṁ kurukulaśreṣṭha duṣkaraṁ kṛtavāniha.
20. na etat anye kariṣyanti bhaviṣyāḥ pṛthivīkṣitaḥ
yat tvam kurukulaśreṣṭha duṣkaram kṛtavān iha
20. kurukulaśreṣṭha tvam iha yat duṣkaram kṛtavān
etat anye bhaviṣyāḥ pṛthivīkṣitaḥ na kariṣyanti
20. No other future kings of the earth will achieve this, which you, O best of the Kuru dynasty, have accomplished here, a deed so difficult to perform.
इत्येवं वदतां तेषां नॄणां श्रुतिसुखा गिरः ।
शृण्वन्विवेश धर्मात्मा फल्गुनो यज्ञसंस्तरम् ॥२१॥
21. ityevaṁ vadatāṁ teṣāṁ nṝṇāṁ śrutisukhā giraḥ ,
śṛṇvanviveśa dharmātmā phalguno yajñasaṁstaram.
21. iti evam vadatām teṣām nṝṇām śrutisukhāḥ giraḥ
śṛṇvan viveśa dharmātmā phalgunaḥ yajñasaṃstaram
21. dharmātmā phalgunaḥ iti evam vadatām teṣām nṝṇām
śrutisukhāḥ giraḥ śṛṇvan yajñasaṃstaram viveśa
21. Thus, hearing the delightful words of those men speaking, Arjuna, whose nature was righteousness (dharma), entered the arena of the Vedic ritual (yajña).
ततो राजा सहामात्यः कृष्णश्च यदुनन्दनः ।
धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य ते तं प्रत्युद्ययुस्तदा ॥२२॥
22. tato rājā sahāmātyaḥ kṛṣṇaśca yadunandanaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ puraskṛtya te taṁ pratyudyayustadā.
22. tataḥ rājā saha amātyaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ ca yadunandanaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭram puraskṛtya te tam prati ud yayuḥ tadā
22. tadā rājā saha amātyaḥ ca yadunandanaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭram puraskṛtya te tam prati ud yayuḥ
22. Then, the king, accompanied by his ministers, and Krishna, the joy of the Yadus, putting Dhritarashtra at the forefront, went forth to meet him (Arjuna).
सोऽभिवाद्य पितुः पादौ धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ।
भीमादींश्चापि संपूज्य पर्यष्वजत केशवम् ॥२३॥
23. so'bhivādya pituḥ pādau dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ,
bhīmādīṁścāpi saṁpūjya paryaṣvajata keśavam.
23. saḥ abhivādya pituḥ pādau dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
bhīmādīn ca api saṃpūjya pari aṣvajata keśavam
23. saḥ pituḥ pādau abhivādya dhīmataḥ dharmarājasya
ca bhīmādīn api saṃpūjya keśavam pari aṣvajata
23. He, having saluted the feet of his father and of the wise king of righteousness (dharma), and also having honored Bhima and others, then embraced Keśava (Krishna).
तैः समेत्यार्चितस्तान्स प्रत्यर्च्य च यथाविधि ।
विशश्रामाथ धर्मात्मा तीरं लब्ध्वेव पारगः ॥२४॥
24. taiḥ sametyārcitastānsa pratyarcya ca yathāvidhi ,
viśaśrāmātha dharmātmā tīraṁ labdhveva pāragaḥ.
24. taiḥ sametya arcitaḥ tān pratyarcya ca yathāvidhi
viśaśrāma atha dharmātmā tīram labdhvā iva pāragaḥ
24. dharmātmā taiḥ sametya arcitaḥ ca yathāvidhi tān
pratyarcya atha pāragaḥ tīram labdhvā iva viśaśrāma
24. Having met them and been honored by them, and having reciprocated their honors according to custom, the righteous soul (dharmātmā) then rested, just as a voyager having reached the shore.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु स राजा बभ्रुवाहनः ।
मातृभ्यां सहितो धीमान्कुरूनभ्याजगाम ह ॥२५॥
25. etasminneva kāle tu sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ ,
mātṛbhyāṁ sahito dhīmānkurūnabhyājagāma ha.
25. etasmin eva kāle tu sa rājā babhrūvāhanaḥ
mātṛbhyām sahitaḥ dhīmān kurūn abhyājagāma ha
25. tu etasmin eva kāle saḥ dhīmān rājā babhrūvāhanaḥ
mātṛbhyām sahitaḥ kurūn abhyājagāma ha
25. Indeed, at this very time, that intelligent King Babhruvāhana, accompanied by his two mothers, came to the Kurus.
स समेत्य कुरून्सर्वान्सर्वैस्तैरभिनन्दितः ।
प्रविवेश पितामह्याः कुन्त्या भवनमुत्तमम् ॥२६॥
26. sa sametya kurūnsarvānsarvaistairabhinanditaḥ ,
praviveśa pitāmahyāḥ kuntyā bhavanamuttamam.
26. sa sametya kurūn sarvān sarvaiḥ taiḥ abhinanditaḥ
praviveśa pitāmahyāḥ kuntyā bhavanam uttamam
26. sa kurūn sarvān sametya sarvaiḥ taiḥ abhinanditaḥ
pitāmahyāḥ kuntyā bhavanam uttamam praviveśa
26. He, having met all the Kurus and been welcomed by all of them, then entered the excellent dwelling of his grandmother, Kunti.
