वासुदेव उवाच ।
शाल्वबाणार्दिते तस्मिन्प्रद्युम्ने बलिनां वरे ।
वृष्णयो भग्नसंकल्पा विव्यथुः पृतनागताः ॥१॥
1. vāsudeva uvāca ,
śālvabāṇārdite tasminpradyumne balināṁ vare ,
vṛṣṇayo bhagnasaṁkalpā vivyathuḥ pṛtanāgatāḥ.

1. Vāsudeva said: When Pradyumna, the best among the mighty, was afflicted by Śālva's arrows, the Vṛṣṇis, who had assembled for battle, became distressed with shattered resolve.
हाहाकृतमभूत्सार्वं वृष्ण्यन्धकबलं तदा ।
प्रद्युम्ने पतिते राजन्परे च मुदिताभवन् ॥२॥
2. hāhākṛtamabhūtsārvaṁ vṛṣṇyandhakabalaṁ tadā ,
pradyumne patite rājanpare ca muditābhavan.
2. hāhākṛtam abhūt sārvam vṛṣṇyandhakabalam tadā
pradyumne patite rājan pare ca muditāḥ abhavan
2. Then, O King, when Pradyumna fell, the entire Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka army raised an outcry of distress, and the enemies rejoiced.
तं तथा मोहितं दृष्ट्वा सारथिर्जवनैर्हयैः ।
रणादपाहरत्तूर्णं शिक्षितो दारुकिस्ततः ॥३॥
3. taṁ tathā mohitaṁ dṛṣṭvā sārathirjavanairhayaiḥ ,
raṇādapāharattūrṇaṁ śikṣito dārukistataḥ.
3. tam tathā mohitam dṛṣṭvā sārathiḥ javanaiḥ hayaiḥ
raṇāt apāharat tūrṇam śikṣitaḥ dārukiḥ tataḥ
3. Seeing him thus bewildered, the trained charioteer Dāruka then quickly drove him away from the battlefield with swift horses.
नातिदूरापयाते तु रथे रथवरप्रणुत् ।
धनुर्गृहीत्वा यन्तारं लब्धसंज्ञोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥४॥
4. nātidūrāpayāte tu rathe rathavarapraṇut ,
dhanurgṛhītvā yantāraṁ labdhasaṁjño'bravīdidam.
4. na ati dūra apayāte tu rathe rathavara-praṇut
dhanuḥ gṛhītvā yantāram labdha-saṃjñaḥ abravīt idam
4. But when the chariot had not gone very far, the renowned warrior (rathavarapraṇut), having regained his senses (saṃjñā), took his bow and said this to the charioteer.
सौते किं ते व्यवसितं कस्माद्यासि पराङ्मुखः ।
नैष वृष्णिप्रवीराणामाहवे धर्म उच्यते ॥५॥
5. saute kiṁ te vyavasitaṁ kasmādyāsi parāṅmukhaḥ ,
naiṣa vṛṣṇipravīrāṇāmāhave dharma ucyate.
5. saute kim te vyavasitam kasmāt yāsi parāṅmukhaḥ
na eṣaḥ vṛṣṇi-pravīrāṇām āhave dharmaḥ ucyate
5. "O charioteer, what have you decided to do? Why are you retreating with your face averted? This is not considered the righteous conduct (dharma) of the foremost Vṛṣṇi heroes in battle."
कच्चित्सौते न ते मोहः शाल्वं दृष्ट्वा महाहवे ।
विषादो वा रणं दृष्ट्वा ब्रूहि मे त्वं यथातथम् ॥६॥
6. kaccitsaute na te mohaḥ śālvaṁ dṛṣṭvā mahāhave ,
viṣādo vā raṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā brūhi me tvaṁ yathātatham.
6. kaccit saute na te mohaḥ śālvaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahāhave
viṣādaḥ vā raṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā brūhi me tvam yathātatham
6. "O charioteer, I hope you are not bewildered (moha) by seeing Śālva in this great battle, nor despondent after seeing the conflict. Tell me the truth, exactly as it is."
सूत उवाच ।
जानार्दने न मे मोहो नापि मे भयमाविशत् ।
अतिभारं तु ते मन्ये शाल्वं केशवनन्दन ॥७॥
7. sūta uvāca ,
jānārdane na me moho nāpi me bhayamāviśat ,
atibhāraṁ tu te manye śālvaṁ keśavanandana.
7. sūtaḥ uvāca | jānārdane na me mohaḥ na api me bhayam
āviśat | atibhāram tu te manye śālvam keśavanandana
7. Sūta said: I have no delusion concerning Jānārdana (Kṛṣṇa), nor has fear entered me. However, O son of Keśava (Pradyumna), I consider Śālva a great burden for you.
सोऽपयामि शनैर्वीर बलवानेष पापकृत् ।
मोहितश्च रणे शूरो रक्ष्यः सारथिना रथी ॥८॥
8. so'payāmi śanairvīra balavāneṣa pāpakṛt ,
mohitaśca raṇe śūro rakṣyaḥ sārathinā rathī.
8. saḥ apayāmi śanaiḥ vīra balavān eṣaḥ pāpakṛt |
mohitaḥ ca raṇe śūraḥ rakṣyaḥ sārathinā rathī
8. Therefore, O hero, I will retreat slowly. This evildoer (Śālva) is powerful. Furthermore, a hero (the warrior) who is bewildered in battle must be protected by his charioteer.
आयुष्मंस्त्वं मया नित्यं रक्षितव्यस्त्वयाप्यहम् ।
रक्षितव्यो रथी नित्यमिति कृत्वापयाम्यहम् ॥९॥
9. āyuṣmaṁstvaṁ mayā nityaṁ rakṣitavyastvayāpyaham ,
rakṣitavyo rathī nityamiti kṛtvāpayāmyaham.
9. āyuṣman tvam mayā nityam rakṣitavyaḥ tvayā api aham
| rakṣitavyaḥ rathī nityam iti kṛtvā apayāmi aham
9. O long-lived one, you must always be protected by me, and I must also be protected by you. The warrior on the chariot (rathī) must always be protected; holding this in mind, I retreat.
एकश्चासि महाबाहो बहवश्चापि दानवाः ।
नसमं रौक्मिणेयाहं रणं मत्वापयाम्यहम् ॥१०॥
10. ekaścāsi mahābāho bahavaścāpi dānavāḥ ,
nasamaṁ raukmiṇeyāhaṁ raṇaṁ matvāpayāmyaham.
10. ekaḥ ca asi mahābāho bahavaḥ ca api dānavāḥ | na
samam raukmiṇeya aham raṇam matvā apayāmi aham
10. O mighty-armed one, you are alone, and the Dānavas (demons) are many. O son of Rukminī (Pradyumna), having considered this battle to be uneven, I retreat.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
एवं ब्रुवति सूते तु तदा मकरकेतुमान् ।
उवाच सूतं कौरव्य निवर्तय रथं पुनः ॥११॥
11. vāsudeva uvāca ,
evaṁ bruvati sūte tu tadā makaraketumān ,
uvāca sūtaṁ kauravya nivartaya rathaṁ punaḥ.
11. vāsudeva uvāca evam bruvati sūte tu tadā makaraketumān
uvāca sūtam kauravya nivartaya ratham punaḥ
11. Vāsudeva said: "O scion of Kuru, when the charioteer was speaking thus, Arjuna, whose banner bore the makara emblem, then said to the charioteer, 'Turn the chariot back again.'"
दारुकात्मज मैवं त्वं पुनः कार्षीः कथंचन ।
व्यपयानं रणात्सौते जीवतो मम कर्हिचित् ॥१२॥
12. dārukātmaja maivaṁ tvaṁ punaḥ kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana ,
vyapayānaṁ raṇātsaute jīvato mama karhicit.
12. dārukātmaja mā evam tvam punaḥ kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana
vyapayanām raṇāt sūte jīvataḥ mama karhicit
12. O son of Dāruka, never again do this – flee from battle, O charioteer, while I am still alive.
न स वृष्णिकुले जातो यो वै त्यजति संगरम् ।
यो वा निपतितं हन्ति तवास्मीति च वादिनम् ॥१३॥
13. na sa vṛṣṇikule jāto yo vai tyajati saṁgaram ,
yo vā nipatitaṁ hanti tavāsmīti ca vādinam.
13. na sa vṛṣṇikule jātaḥ yaḥ vai tyajati saṃgaram
yaḥ vā nipatitam hanti tava asmi iti ca vādinam
13. No one who abandons battle is truly born in the Vṛṣṇi lineage, nor one who kills a fallen foe or one who proclaims, 'I am yours!'
तथा स्त्रियं वै यो हन्ति वृद्धं बालं तथैव च ।
विरथं विप्रकीर्णं च भग्नशस्त्रायुधं तथा ॥१४॥
14. tathā striyaṁ vai yo hanti vṛddhaṁ bālaṁ tathaiva ca ,
virathaṁ viprakīrṇaṁ ca bhagnaśastrāyudhaṁ tathā.
14. tathā striyam vai yaḥ hanti vṛddham bālam tathā eva
ca viratham viprakīrṇam ca bhagnaśastrāyudham tathā
14. Likewise, (no one born in the Vṛṣṇi lineage is one) who kills a woman, an old person, a child, one who is dismounted from their chariot, one who is dispersed (from their ranks), or one whose weapons and armor are broken.
त्वं च सूतकुले जातो विनीतः सूतकर्मणि ।
धर्मज्ञश्चासि वृष्णीनामाहवेष्वपि दारुके ॥१५॥
15. tvaṁ ca sūtakule jāto vinītaḥ sūtakarmaṇi ,
dharmajñaścāsi vṛṣṇīnāmāhaveṣvapi dāruke.
15. tvam ca sūtakule jātaḥ vinītaḥ sūtakarmaṇi
dharmajñaḥ ca asi vṛṣṇīnām āhaveṣu api dāruke
15. O Dāruka, you were born in a charioteer's family and are trained in the duties of a charioteer. You are also knowledgeable about the natural law (dharma) of the Vṛṣṇis, even during battles.
स जानंश्चरितं कृत्स्नं वृष्णीनां पृतनामुखे ।
अपयानं पुनः सौते मैवं कार्षीः कथंचन ॥१६॥
16. sa jānaṁścaritaṁ kṛtsnaṁ vṛṣṇīnāṁ pṛtanāmukhe ,
apayānaṁ punaḥ saute maivaṁ kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana.
16. sa jānan caritam kṛtsnam vṛṣṇīnām pṛtanāmukhe
apayānam punaḥ saūte mā evam kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana
16. O Sūta, knowing the entire conduct of the Vṛṣṇis at the forefront of battle, you must not, by any means, retreat again.
अपयातं हतं पृष्ठे भीतं रणपलायिनम् ।
गदाग्रजो दुराधर्षः किं मां वक्ष्यति माधवः ॥१७॥
17. apayātaṁ hataṁ pṛṣṭhe bhītaṁ raṇapalāyinam ,
gadāgrajo durādharṣaḥ kiṁ māṁ vakṣyati mādhavaḥ.
17. apayātam hatam pṛṣṭhe bhītam raṇapalāyinam
gadāgrajaḥ durādharṣaḥ kim mām vakṣyati mādhavaḥ
17. What will Mādhava, the invincible elder brother of Gaḍa (Kṛṣṇa), say to me if I am seen as one who has retreated, been struck from behind, terrified, and fled from the battle?
केशवस्याग्रजो वापि नीलवासा मदोत्कटः ।
किं वक्ष्यति महाबाहुर्बलदेवः समागतः ॥१८॥
18. keśavasyāgrajo vāpi nīlavāsā madotkaṭaḥ ,
kiṁ vakṣyati mahābāhurbaladevaḥ samāgataḥ.
18. keśavasya agrajaḥ vā api nīlavāsā madotkaṭaḥ
kim vakṣyati mahābāhuḥ baladevaḥ samāgataḥ
18. Or what will the mighty-armed Baladeva, Keśava's elder brother, who wears blue garments and is filled with exuberant pride, say when he arrives?
किं वक्ष्यति शिनेर्नप्ता नरसिंहो महाधनुः ।
अपयातं रणात्सौते साम्बश्च समितिंजयः ॥१९॥
19. kiṁ vakṣyati śinernaptā narasiṁho mahādhanuḥ ,
apayātaṁ raṇātsaute sāmbaśca samitiṁjayaḥ.
19. kim vakṣyati śineḥ naptā narasiṃhaḥ mahādhanuḥ
apayātam raṇāt saute sāmbaḥ ca samitiṃjayaḥ
19. O charioteer (sūta's son), what will Shini's grandson (Sātyaki), Narasiṃha the mighty bowman, and Sāmba, the conqueror in battle, say about me having fled from the fight?
चारुदेष्णश्च दुर्धर्षस्तथैव गदसारणौ ।
अक्रूरश्च महाबाहुः किं मां वक्ष्यति सारथे ॥२०॥
20. cārudeṣṇaśca durdharṣastathaiva gadasāraṇau ,
akrūraśca mahābāhuḥ kiṁ māṁ vakṣyati sārathe.
20. cārudeṣṇaḥ ca durdharṣaḥ tathā eva gadasāraṇau
akrūraḥ ca mahābāhuḥ kim mām vakṣyati sārathe
20. O charioteer, what will the invincible Cārudeṣṇa, as well as Gada and Sāraṇa, and Akrūra the mighty-armed, say about me?
शूरं संभावितं सन्तं नित्यं पुरुषमानिनम् ।
स्त्रियश्च वृष्णीवीराणां किं मां वक्ष्यन्ति संगताः ॥२१॥
21. śūraṁ saṁbhāvitaṁ santaṁ nityaṁ puruṣamāninam ,
striyaśca vṛṣṇīvīrāṇāṁ kiṁ māṁ vakṣyanti saṁgatāḥ.
21. śūram saṃbhāvitam santam nityam puruṣamāninam
striyaḥ ca vṛṣṇīvīrāṇām kim mām vakṣyanti saṃgatāḥ
21. And what will the women of the Vṛṣṇi heroes, when assembled, say about me, who am always esteemed as brave, virtuous, and one who regards himself as a true man (puruṣa)?
प्रद्युम्नोऽयमुपायाति भीतस्त्यक्त्वा महाहवम् ।
धिगेनमिति वक्ष्यन्ति न तु वक्ष्यन्ति साध्विति ॥२२॥
22. pradyumno'yamupāyāti bhītastyaktvā mahāhavam ,
dhigenamiti vakṣyanti na tu vakṣyanti sādhviti.
22. pradyumnaḥ ayam upāyāti bhītaḥ tyaktvā mahāhavam
dhik enam iti vakṣyanti na tu vakṣyanti sādhu iti
22. They will say, 'Shame on this Pradyumna, who, terrified, returns, having abandoned the great battle!' But they will certainly not say, 'Well done!'
धिग्वाचा परिहासोऽपि मम वा मद्विधस्य वा ।
मृत्युनाभ्यधिकः सौते स त्वं मा व्यपयाः पुनः ॥२३॥
23. dhigvācā parihāso'pi mama vā madvidhasya vā ,
mṛtyunābhyadhikaḥ saute sa tvaṁ mā vyapayāḥ punaḥ.
23. dhik vācā parihāsaḥ api mama vā madvidhasya vā
mṛtyunā abhyadhikaḥ saute sa tvam mā vyapayāḥ punaḥ
23. Fie! Even a jest from me or one like me is worse than death, O son of Sūta. You must not leave again.
भारं हि मयि संन्यस्य यातो मधुनिहा हरिः ।
यज्ञं भरतसिंहस्य पार्थस्यामिततेजसः ॥२४॥
24. bhāraṁ hi mayi saṁnyasya yāto madhunihā hariḥ ,
yajñaṁ bharatasiṁhasya pārthasyāmitatejasaḥ.
24. bhāram hi mayi saṃnyasya yātaḥ madhunihā hariḥ
yajñam bharatasiṃhasya pārthasya amitatejasaḥ
24. hi madhunihā hariḥ mayi bhāram saṃnyasya
bharatasiṃhasya amitatejasaḥ pārthasya yajñam yātaḥ
24. Indeed, Hari (madhunihā), the slayer of Madhu, having entrusted the burden to me, has gone to the Vedic ritual (yajña) of Pārtha (Arjuna), the lion among the Bharatas, who possesses immeasurable splendor.
कृतवर्मा मया वीरो निर्यास्यन्नेव वारितः ।
शाल्वं निवारयिष्येऽहं तिष्ठ त्वमिति सूतज ॥२५॥
25. kṛtavarmā mayā vīro niryāsyanneva vāritaḥ ,
śālvaṁ nivārayiṣye'haṁ tiṣṭha tvamiti sūtaja.
25. kṛtavarmā mayā vīraḥ niryāsyan eva vāritaḥ
śālvaṃ nivārayiṣye aham tiṣṭha tvam iti sūtaja
25. Kṛtavarman, the hero, was stopped by me just as he was about to depart. 'I shall prevent Śālva; you stay here,' I said thus, O son of Sūta.
स च संभावयन्मां वै निवृत्तो हृदिकात्मजः ।
तं समेत्य रणं त्यक्त्वा किं वक्ष्यामि महारथम् ॥२६॥
26. sa ca saṁbhāvayanmāṁ vai nivṛtto hṛdikātmajaḥ ,
taṁ sametya raṇaṁ tyaktvā kiṁ vakṣyāmi mahāratham.
26. sa ca saṃbhāvayan mām vai nivṛttaḥ hṛdikātmajaḥ
tam sametya raṇam tyaktvā kim vakṣyāmi mahāratham
26. And he, the son of Hṛdika, indeed turned back, honoring me. Having met him, and having abandoned the battle, what shall I say to that great warrior?
उपयातं दुराधर्षं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् ।
पुरुषं पुण्डरीकाक्षं किं वक्ष्यामि महाभुजम् ॥२७॥
27. upayātaṁ durādharṣaṁ śaṅkhacakragadādharam ,
puruṣaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ kiṁ vakṣyāmi mahābhujam.
27. upayātam durādharṣam śaṅkhacakragadādharam
puruṣam puṇḍarīkākṣam kim vakṣyāmi mahābhujam
27. What can I say about the unconquerable, mighty-armed person (puruṣa) who has arrived, bearing the conch, disc, and mace, and possesses lotus-like eyes?
सात्यकिं बलदेवं च ये चान्येऽन्धकवृष्णयः ।
मया स्पर्धन्ति सततं किं नु वक्ष्यामि तानहम् ॥२८॥
28. sātyakiṁ baladevaṁ ca ye cānye'ndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ ,
mayā spardhanti satataṁ kiṁ nu vakṣyāmi tānaham.
28. sātyakim baladevam ca ye ca anye andhakavṛṣṇayaḥ
mayā spardhanti satatam kim nu vakṣyāmi tān aham
28. And what indeed shall I say about Satyaki, Baladeva, and those other Andhaka and Vṛṣṇi warriors who constantly contend with me?
त्यक्त्वा रणमिमं सौते पृष्ठतोऽभ्याहतः शरैः ।
त्वयापनीतो विवशो न जीवेयं कथंचन ॥२९॥
29. tyaktvā raṇamimaṁ saute pṛṣṭhato'bhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ ,
tvayāpanīto vivaśo na jīveyaṁ kathaṁcana.
29. tyaktvā raṇam imam saute pṛṣṭataḥ abhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ
tvayā apanītaḥ vivaśaḥ na jīveyam kathaṃcana
29. O charioteer, if I were to abandon this battle, be struck from behind by arrows, and be forcibly removed by you, I would certainly not survive.
स निवर्त रथेनाशु पुनर्दारुकनन्दन ।
न चैतदेवं कर्तव्यमथापत्सु कथंचन ॥३०॥
30. sa nivarta rathenāśu punardārukanandana ,
na caitadevaṁ kartavyamathāpatsu kathaṁcana.
30. sa nivarta rathena āśu punaḥ dārukanandana na
ca etat evam kartavyam atha āpatsu kathaṃcana
30. Therefore, O son of Dāruka, turn the chariot back swiftly! This action should certainly never be done in such a way, not even in times of adversity.
न जीवितमहं सौते बहु मन्ये कदाचन ।
अपयातो रणाद्भीतः पृष्ठतोऽभ्याहतः शरैः ॥३१॥
31. na jīvitamahaṁ saute bahu manye kadācana ,
apayāto raṇādbhītaḥ pṛṣṭhato'bhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ.
31. na jīvitam aham saute bahu manye kadācana
apayātaḥ raṇāt bhītaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ abhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ
31. O son of Suta, I never value my life highly if I am one who has retreated from battle, terrified, and been struck by arrows from behind.
कदा वा सूतपुत्र त्वं जानीषे मां भयार्दितम् ।
अपयातं रणं हित्वा यथा कापुरुषं तथा ॥३२॥
32. kadā vā sūtaputra tvaṁ jānīṣe māṁ bhayārditam ,
apayātaṁ raṇaṁ hitvā yathā kāpuruṣaṁ tathā.
32. kadā vā sūtaputra tvam jānīṣe mām bhayārditam
apayātam raṇam hitvā yathā kāpuruṣam tathā
32. O son of Suta, when will you consider me, afflicted by fear, having abandoned battle and retreated, to be like a coward (kāpuruṣa)?
न युक्तं भवता त्यक्तुं संग्रामं दारुकात्मज ।
मयि युद्धार्थिनि भृशं स त्वं याहि यतो रणम् ॥३३॥
33. na yuktaṁ bhavatā tyaktuṁ saṁgrāmaṁ dārukātmaja ,
mayi yuddhārthini bhṛśaṁ sa tvaṁ yāhi yato raṇam.
33. na yuktam bhavatā tyaktum saṅgrāmam dārukātmaja
mayi yuddhārthini bhṛśam sa tvam yāhi yataḥ raṇam
33. O son of Dāruka, it is not fitting for you to abandon the battle when I am greatly eager for it. Therefore, you must go to the battle!
