Śṛṅgi said: 'O father, whether this is a rash act or a wrong deed, the words I have spoken to you, whether pleasant or unpleasant, are not false.'

2.
This will certainly not happen otherwise, O father; this I declare to you. I do not speak falsely even in jest, so how could I when uttering a curse?

3.
Śamīka said: 'O son, I know you possess formidable power and speak only the truth. Indeed, no falsehood has ever been uttered by you before, and this will not prove false either.'

4.
A father should always advise his son, even if the son is grown up, so that he may become endowed with virtues and achieve great fame.

5.
Moreover, O powerful one, you are just a boy purified by penance. And the anger of powerful great souls indeed grows exceedingly.

6.
O best among those who uphold dharma, I therefore find it necessary to speak to you, considering your childlike nature, your youth, and your audacity.
7. sa tvaṁ śamayuto bhūtvā vanyamāhāramāharan ,

7.
Therefore, becoming tranquil, subsisting on wild food, abandon this anger and practice asceticism. In this way, you will not abandon your dharma.
8. krodho hi dharmaṁ harati yatīnāṁ duḥkhasaṁcitam ,

krodhaḥ hi dharmam harati yatīnām duḥkhasamcitam
tataḥ dharmavihīnānām gatiḥ iṣṭā na vidyate
tataḥ dharmavihīnānām gatiḥ iṣṭā na vidyate
8.
Anger, indeed, destroys the dharma of ascetics, which they accumulated through great hardship. Consequently, for those deprived of dharma, no desirable path or goal is found.
9. śama eva yatīnāṁ hi kṣamiṇāṁ siddhikārakaḥ ,

śamaḥ eva yatīnām hi kṣamiṇām siddhikārakaḥ
kṣamāvatām ayam lokaḥ paraḥ ca eva kṣamāvatām
kṣamāvatām ayam lokaḥ paraḥ ca eva kṣamāvatām
9.
Indeed, for ascetics who are forgiving, tranquility alone brings accomplishment. This world belongs to the forgiving, and the next world too, certainly, belongs to the forgiving.

10.
Therefore, you should constantly be patient and self-controlled. Through this patience, you will attain the worlds that are immediately adjacent to Brahma.

But I, having adopted a calm demeanor, will do today whatever is possible to be done. Indeed, dear son, I myself will send [a messenger] to the king today.

12.
O King, you have been cursed by my son—a mere child with an undeveloped mind—who became indignant upon seeing this insult from you directed at me.

Sūta said: Having thus instructed his disciple, that virtuous great ascetic, filled with compassion, dispatched him to King Parikṣit.

14.
And having sent a message conveying a greeting and the full account of the matter, he dispatched his disciple named Gauramukha, who was virtuous and composed.

15.
Having quickly approached the king, the enhancer of the Kuru dynasty, and having been announced previously by the doorkeepers, he then entered the king's palace.

16.
And the brahmin Gauramukha, having been honored by the king and having rested thoroughly, then recounted everything completely to the king: the dreadful words of Śamīka, just as they had been spoken in the presence of the ministers.

17.
O King, there resides in your domain a sage named Śamīka, whose soul is supremely righteous, who is self-controlled, peaceful, and performs great austerities.

18.
O tiger among men, O best of Bharatas, you deprived his serpent of life and hung it on his shoulder with the tip of your bow. While he (the sage) tolerated that action of yours, his son did not forgive it.

19.
O King, by him (the son), unknown to his father, you have been cursed today: 'Takṣaka will indeed be your death within seven nights!'

20.
He said again and again, "Provide protection there." And indeed, that could not be done otherwise by anyone.

21.
Indeed, he is unable to restrain his son, who is filled with anger. Therefore, O King, I have been sent by him who wishes your well-being.

22.
Having heard these dreadful words, that King, the joy of the Kurus, the great ascetic, deeply repented, having committed that sin.

23.
And then, having heard that the eminent sage was observing a vow of silence, the king's mind became tormented by sorrow once more.

24.
Having understood the compassionate nature of Śamīka, he again repented for having committed that offense against the sage.

25.
Indeed, the king, who resembled a god, did not lament death (upon hearing of it) as much as he regretted having committed that deed here (in this world).

26.
Then, the king sent Gauramukha at that time (with the plea), "May the venerable Lord show me more favor!"

27.
And indeed, as soon as Gauramukha had departed, the king, with an agitated mind, then consulted with his ministers.

28.
And indeed, having deliberated with his ministers, the king, who knew the essence of counsel, then had a well-protected, single-pillared palace constructed.

29.
And there he arranged for protection and for medicines. He also stationed physicians and Brahmins with effective mantras all around (the palace).

But when that seventh day arrived, O best of brahmins, the learned Kāśyapa approached that king to treat him.

That king of serpents, Takṣaka, having assumed the form of a brahmin surpassing in age, saw Kāśyapa on the path, proceeding with a single mind.

O gentle one, I am quickly going to immediately make that king — the progenitor of the Pāṇḍava lineage and one of immeasurable energy, who will be bitten by that lord of serpents whose splendor is like fire — free from pain.
