वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा गान्धारी शोककर्शिता ।
सहसा न्यपतद्भूमौ छिन्नेव कदली वने ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā gāndhārī śokakarśitā ,
sahasā nyapatadbhūmau chinneva kadalī vane.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then Gāndhārī, weakened by grief, upon seeing Duryodhana, suddenly collapsed to the ground, like a plantain tree felled in a forest.
सा तु लब्ध्वा पुनः संज्ञां विक्रुश्य च पुनः पुनः ।
दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य शयानं रुधिरोक्षितम् ॥२॥
2. sā tu labdhvā punaḥ saṁjñāṁ vikruśya ca punaḥ punaḥ ,
duryodhanamabhiprekṣya śayānaṁ rudhirokṣitam.
2. sā tu labdhvā punaḥ saṃjñām vikruśya ca punaḥ
punaḥ duryodhanam abhiprekṣya śayānam rudhirokṣitam
2. sā tu punaḥ saṃjñām labdhvā ca punaḥ punaḥ vikruśya,

2. But she, having regained consciousness, and having cried out again and again, looked closely at Duryodhana, who was lying there drenched in blood.
परिष्वज्य च गान्धारी कृपणं पर्यदेवयत् ।
हा हा पुत्रेति शोकार्ता विललापाकुलेन्द्रिया ॥३॥
3. pariṣvajya ca gāndhārī kṛpaṇaṁ paryadevayat ,
hā hā putreti śokārtā vilalāpākulendriyā.
3. pariṣvajya ca gāndhārī kṛpaṇam paryadevayat
hā hā putra iti śokārtā vilalāpa ākulendriyā

3. And embracing (her fallen sons), Gandhari lamented piteously. Overwhelmed by grief (śokārtā), and with her senses bewildered, she wailed, "Alas, alas, my son!"
सुगूढजत्रु विपुलं हारनिष्कनिषेवितम् ।
वारिणा नेत्रजेनोरः सिञ्चन्ती शोकतापिता ।
समीपस्थं हृषीकेशमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. sugūḍhajatru vipulaṁ hāraniṣkaniṣevitam ,
vāriṇā netrajenoraḥ siñcantī śokatāpitā ,
samīpasthaṁ hṛṣīkeśamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

vāriṇā netrajena uraḥ
siñcantī śokatāpitā samīpastham

4. With her broad chest, whose collarbones were well-hidden and which was accustomed to being adorned with necklaces and golden coins (hāranīṣkanisevitam), now drenched by the tears (netrajena vāriṇā) flowing from her eyes, and tormented by grief (śokatāpitā), she addressed these words to Krishna (hṛṣīkeśa), who stood nearby.
उपस्थितेऽस्मिन्संग्रामे ज्ञातीनां संक्षये विभो ।
मामयं प्राह वार्ष्णेय प्राञ्जलिर्नृपसत्तमः ।
अस्मिञ्ज्ञातिसमुद्धर्षे जयमम्बा ब्रवीतु मे ॥५॥
5. upasthite'sminsaṁgrāme jñātīnāṁ saṁkṣaye vibho ,
māmayaṁ prāha vārṣṇeya prāñjalirnṛpasattamaḥ ,
asmiñjñātisamuddharṣe jayamambā bravītu me.
5. upasthite asmin saṅgrāme jñātīnām
saṃkṣaye vibho mām ayam prāha vārṣṇeya
prāñjaliḥ nṛpasattamaḥ asmin
jñātisamuddharṣe jayam ambā bravītu me
5. vibho asmin saṅgrāme jñātīnām saṃkṣaye
upasthite ayam nṛpasattamaḥ
prāñjaliḥ mām prāha vārṣṇeya asmin
jñātisamuddharṣe ambā me jayam bravītu
5. O Lord (vibho)! When this battle (saṅgrāme) involving the annihilation (saṃkṣaye) of our kinsmen (jñātīnām) was imminent, this supreme king (nṛpasattamaḥ) (Duryodhana), with folded hands (prāñjaliḥ), said to me, "O Mother, may you declare victory (jayam) for me in this great struggle (jñātisamuddharṣe) among kinsmen."
इत्युक्ते जानती सर्वमहं स्वं व्यसनागमम् ।
अब्रुवं पुरुषव्याघ्र यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥६॥
6. ityukte jānatī sarvamahaṁ svaṁ vyasanāgamam ,
abruvaṁ puruṣavyāghra yato dharmastato jayaḥ.
6. iti ukte jānantī sarvam aham svam vyasanāgamam
abruvam puruṣavyāghra yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
6. iti ukte aham svam sarvam vyasanāgamam jānantī
abruvam puruṣavyāghra yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
6. When this was said (ityukte), I, knowing fully well my own impending calamity (vyasanāgamam), spoke (abruvam), "O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) (Krishna)! Where there is natural law (dharma), there is victory (jaya)."
यथा न युध्यमानस्त्वं संप्रमुह्यसि पुत्रक ।
ध्रुवं शस्त्रजिताँल्लोकान्प्राप्तास्यमरवद्विभो ॥७॥
7. yathā na yudhyamānastvaṁ saṁpramuhyasi putraka ,
dhruvaṁ śastrajitāँllokānprāptāsyamaravadvibho.
7. yathā na yudhyamānaḥ tvam sampramuhyasi putraka
dhruvam śastrajitān lokān prāptāsi amaravat vibho
7. putraka vibho tvam yudhyamānaḥ na sampramuhyasi
yathā dhruvam amaravat śastrajitān lokān prāptāsi
7. So that you, my son, do not become utterly bewildered while fighting. Indeed, O mighty one, you will attain worlds conquered by weapons, living like the immortals.
इत्येवमब्रुवं पूर्वं नैनं शोचामि वै प्रभो ।
धृतराष्ट्रं तु शोचामि कृपणं हतबान्धवम् ॥८॥
8. ityevamabruvaṁ pūrvaṁ nainaṁ śocāmi vai prabho ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ tu śocāmi kṛpaṇaṁ hatabāndhavam.
8. iti evam abruvam pūrvam na enam śocāmi vai prabho
dhṛtarāṣṭram tu śocāmi kṛpaṇam hatabāndhavam
8. prabho pūrvam iti evam abruvam enam vai na śocāmi
tu kṛpaṇam hatabāndhavam dhṛtarāṣṭram śocāmi
8. Thus I spoke before. Indeed, O lord, I do not grieve for him, but I do grieve for Dhritarashtra, the wretched man whose kinsmen have been slain.
अमर्षणं युधां श्रेष्ठं कृतास्त्रं युद्धदुर्मदम् ।
शयानं वीरशयने पश्य माधव मे सुतम् ॥९॥
9. amarṣaṇaṁ yudhāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ kṛtāstraṁ yuddhadurmadam ,
śayānaṁ vīraśayane paśya mādhava me sutam.
9. amarṣaṇam yudhām śreṣṭham kṛtāstram yuddhadurmadam
śayānam vīraśayane paśya mādhava me sutam
9. mādhava me amarṣaṇam yudhām śreṣṭham kṛtāstram
yuddhadurmadam vīraśayane śayānam sutam paśya
9. Behold, O Madhava, my son - impatient of insult, the best among warriors, skilled in arms, formidable in battle - now lying on a hero's bed.
योऽयं मूर्धावसिक्तानामग्रे याति परंतपः ।
सोऽयं पांसुषु शेतेऽद्य पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१०॥
10. yo'yaṁ mūrdhāvasiktānāmagre yāti paraṁtapaḥ ,
so'yaṁ pāṁsuṣu śete'dya paśya kālasya paryayam.
10. yaḥ ayam mūrdhāvasiktānām agre yāti paraṁtapaḥ
saḥ ayam pāṁsuṣu śete adya paśya kālasya paryayam
10. yaḥ ayam mūrdhāvasiktānām agre yāti paraṁtapaḥ
saḥ ayam adya pāṁsuṣu śete kālasya paryayam paśya
10. This very tormentor of foes, who used to walk at the forefront of consecrated kings, now today lies in the dust. Behold the relentless change (paryaya) brought about by time.
ध्रुवं दुर्योधनो वीरो गतिं नसुलभां गतः ।
तथा ह्यभिमुखः शेते शयने वीरसेविते ॥११॥
11. dhruvaṁ duryodhano vīro gatiṁ nasulabhāṁ gataḥ ,
tathā hyabhimukhaḥ śete śayane vīrasevite.
11. dhruvam duryodhanaḥ vīraḥ gatim na sulabhām gataḥ
| tathā hi abhimukhaḥ śete śayane vīrasevite
11. duryodhanaḥ vīraḥ dhruvam na sulabhām gatim
gataḥ hi tathā abhimukhaḥ vīrasevite śayane śete
11. Surely, the heroic Duryodhana has attained a difficult-to-achieve state. Indeed, he lies facing forward on a bed honored by warriors.
यं पुरा पर्युपासीना रमयन्ति महीक्षितः ।
महीतलस्थं निहतं गृध्रास्तं पर्युपासते ॥१२॥
12. yaṁ purā paryupāsīnā ramayanti mahīkṣitaḥ ,
mahītalasthaṁ nihataṁ gṛdhrāstaṁ paryupāsate.
12. yam purā paryupāsīnāḥ ramayanti mahīkṣitaḥ |
mahītalastham nihatam gṛdhrāḥ tam paryupāsate
12. purā mahīkṣitaḥ yam paryupāsīnāḥ ramayanti,
tam mahītalastham nihatam gṛdhrāḥ paryupāsate
12. He whom kings formerly sat around and delighted, that same person, now lying slain on the ground, vultures attend.
यं पुरा व्यजनैरग्र्यैरुपवीजन्ति योषितः ।
तमद्य पक्षव्यजनैरुपवीजन्ति पक्षिणः ॥१३॥
13. yaṁ purā vyajanairagryairupavījanti yoṣitaḥ ,
tamadya pakṣavyajanairupavījanti pakṣiṇaḥ.
13. yam purā vyajanaiḥ agryaiḥ upavījanti yoṣitaḥ
| tam adya pakṣavyajanaiḥ upavījanti pakṣiṇaḥ
13. purā yoṣitaḥ yam agryaiḥ vyajanaiḥ upavījanti,
adya paxiṇaḥ tam pakṣavyajanaiḥ upavījanti
13. He whom women formerly fanned with excellent fans, him today birds fan with their wings acting as fans.
एष शेते महाबाहुर्बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
सिंहेनेव द्विपः संख्ये भीमसेनेन पातितः ॥१४॥
14. eṣa śete mahābāhurbalavānsatyavikramaḥ ,
siṁheneva dvipaḥ saṁkhye bhīmasenena pātitaḥ.
14. eṣaḥ śete mahābāhuḥ balavān satyavikramaḥ |
siṃhena iva dvipaḥ saṃkhye bhīmasenena pātitaḥ
14. eṣaḥ mahābāhuḥ balavān satyavikramaḥ śete
siṃhena iva dvipaḥ bhīmasenena saṃkhye pātitaḥ
14. This mighty-armed, powerful, truly valorous one lies here, felled in battle by Bhimasena, just as an elephant is struck down by a lion.
पश्य दुर्योधनं कृष्ण शयानं रुधिरोक्षितम् ।
निहतं भीमसेनेन गदामुद्यम्य भारत ॥१५॥
15. paśya duryodhanaṁ kṛṣṇa śayānaṁ rudhirokṣitam ,
nihataṁ bhīmasenena gadāmudyamya bhārata.
15. paśya duryodhanam kṛṣṇa śayānam rudhirokṣitam
nihatam bhīmasenena gadām udyamya bhārata
15. kṛṣṇa bhārata paśya duryodhanam śayānam
rudhirokṣitam bhīmasenena gadām udyamya nihatam
15. O Kṛṣṇa, O descendant of Bharata, behold Duryodhana, lying drenched in blood, slain by Bhīmasena who had raised his mace.
अक्षौहिणीर्महाबाहुर्दश चैकां च केशव ।
अनयद्यः पुरा संख्ये सोऽनयान्निधनं गतः ॥१६॥
16. akṣauhiṇīrmahābāhurdaśa caikāṁ ca keśava ,
anayadyaḥ purā saṁkhye so'nayānnidhanaṁ gataḥ.
16. akṣauhiṇīḥ mahābāhuḥ daśa ca ekām ca keśava
anayat yaḥ purā saṃkhye saḥ anayāt nidhanam gataḥ
16. keśava yaḥ mahābāhuḥ purā saṃkhye daśa ca ekām
ca akṣauhiṇīḥ anayat saḥ anayāt nidhanam gataḥ
16. O Keśava, that mighty-armed man, who previously led eleven (ten and one) akṣauhiṇīs into battle, he has now met his death due to misfortune.
एष दुर्योधनः शेते महेष्वासो महारथः ।
शार्दूल इव सिंहेन भीमसेनेन पातितः ॥१७॥
17. eṣa duryodhanaḥ śete maheṣvāso mahārathaḥ ,
śārdūla iva siṁhena bhīmasenena pātitaḥ.
17. eṣa duryodhanaḥ śete maheṣvāsaḥ mahārathaḥ
śārdūlaḥ iva siṃhena bhīmasenena pātitaḥ
17. eṣa duryodhanaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ mahārathaḥ
śārdūlaḥ iva siṃhena bhīmasenena pātitaḥ śete
17. This Duryodhana, a great archer and a great warrior, lies here, struck down by Bhīmasena, just as a tiger is felled by a lion.
विदुरं ह्यवमन्यैष पितरं चैव मन्दभाक् ।
बालो वृद्धावमानेन मन्दो मृत्युवशं गतः ॥१८॥
18. viduraṁ hyavamanyaiṣa pitaraṁ caiva mandabhāk ,
bālo vṛddhāvamānena mando mṛtyuvaśaṁ gataḥ.
18. viduram hi avamanya eṣa pitaram ca eva mandabhāk
bālaḥ vṛddhāvamanena mandaḥ mṛtyuvaśam gataḥ
18. hi eṣaḥ mandabhāk bālaḥ mandaḥ viduram ca eva
pitaram avamanya vṛddhāvamanena mṛtyuvaśam gataḥ
18. Indeed, this ill-fated, foolish person, having disregarded Vidura and even his own father, has fallen under the sway of death due to his disrespect for elders.
निःसपत्ना मही यस्य त्रयोदश समाः स्थिता ।
स शेते निहतो भूमौ पुत्रो मे पृथिवीपतिः ॥१९॥
19. niḥsapatnā mahī yasya trayodaśa samāḥ sthitā ,
sa śete nihato bhūmau putro me pṛthivīpatiḥ.
19. niḥsapatnā mahī yasya trayodaśa samāḥ sthitā
sa śete nihataḥ bhūmau putraḥ me pṛthivīpatiḥ
19. me putraḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ yasya niḥsapatnā mahī
trayodaśa samāḥ sthitā sa nihataḥ bhūmau śete
19. My son, the lord of the earth (pṛthivīpati), for whom the entire land remained undisputed for thirteen years, now lies slain on the ground.
अपश्यं कृष्ण पृथिवीं धार्तराष्ट्रानुशासनात् ।
पूर्णां हस्तिगवाश्वस्य वार्ष्णेय न तु तच्चिरम् ॥२०॥
20. apaśyaṁ kṛṣṇa pṛthivīṁ dhārtarāṣṭrānuśāsanāt ,
pūrṇāṁ hastigavāśvasya vārṣṇeya na tu tacciram.
20. apaśyam kṛṣṇa pṛthivīm dhārtarāṣṭrānuśāsanāt
pūrṇām hastigavāśvasya vārṣṇeya na tu tat ciram
20. kṛṣṇa vārṣṇeya apaśyam pṛthivīm dhārtarāṣṭrānuśāsanāt
hastigavāśvasya pūrṇām tu tat ciram na
20. O Kṛṣṇa, O Vārṣṇeya, I saw the earth, teeming with elephants, cows, and horses under the command of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons; but that did not last long.
तामेवाद्य महाबाहो पश्याम्यन्यानुशासनात् ।
हीनां हस्तिगवाश्वेन किं नु जीवामि माधव ॥२१॥
21. tāmevādya mahābāho paśyāmyanyānuśāsanāt ,
hīnāṁ hastigavāśvena kiṁ nu jīvāmi mādhava.
21. tām eva adya mahābāho paśyāmi anyānuśāsanāt
hīnām hastigavāśvena kim nu jīvāmi mādhava
21. mahābāho mādhava adya tām eva anyānuśāsanāt
hastigavāśvena hīnām paśyāmi kim nu jīvāmi
21. O mighty-armed (Mahābāho), O Mādhava, today I see that very same earth, now bereft of elephants, cows, and horses, under the command of others. How can I possibly continue to live?
इदं कृच्छ्रतरं पश्य पुत्रस्यापि वधान्मम ।
यदिमाः पर्युपासन्ते हताञ्शूरान्रणे स्त्रियः ॥२२॥
22. idaṁ kṛcchrataraṁ paśya putrasyāpi vadhānmama ,
yadimāḥ paryupāsante hatāñśūrānraṇe striyaḥ.
22. idam kṛcchrataram paśya putrasya api vadhāt mama
yāḥ imāḥ paryupāsante hatān śūrān raṇe striyaḥ
22. paśya idam mama putrasya vadhāt api kṛcchrataram
imāḥ striyaḥ raṇe hatān śūrān paryupāsante
22. Behold this, which is even more agonizing than the death of my son: these women are attending to the fallen heroes on the battlefield.
प्रकीर्णकेशां सुश्रोणीं दुर्योधनभुजाङ्कगाम् ।
रुक्मवेदीनिभां पश्य कृष्ण लक्ष्मणमातरम् ॥२३॥
23. prakīrṇakeśāṁ suśroṇīṁ duryodhanabhujāṅkagām ,
rukmavedīnibhāṁ paśya kṛṣṇa lakṣmaṇamātaram.
23. prakīrṇakeśām suśroṇīm duryodhanabhujāṅkagām
rukmavedinibhām paśya kṛṣṇa lakṣmaṇamātaram
23. kṛṣṇa paśya lakṣmaṇamātaram prakīrṇakeśām

23. O Kṛṣṇa, behold Lakṣmaṇa's mother (Bhanumati), with her hair disheveled and beautiful hips, now lying on Duryodhana's arm, she who once resembled a golden altar.
नूनमेषा पुरा बाला जीवमाने महाभुजे ।
भुजावाश्रित्य रमते सुभुजस्य मनस्विनी ॥२४॥
24. nūnameṣā purā bālā jīvamāne mahābhuje ,
bhujāvāśritya ramate subhujasya manasvinī.
24. nūnam eṣā purā bālā jīvamāne mahābhuje
bhujau āśritya ramate subhujasya manasvinī
24. nūnam eṣā manasvinī bālā purā jīvamāne
mahābhuje subhujasya bhujau āśritya ramate
24. Surely, this spirited young woman (Bhanumati) formerly delighted, relying on the arms of the great-armed, strong-armed (Duryodhana) while he was alive.
कथं तु शतधा नेदं हृदयं मम दीर्यते ।
पश्यन्त्या निहतं पुत्रं पुत्रेण सहितं रणे ॥२५॥
25. kathaṁ tu śatadhā nedaṁ hṛdayaṁ mama dīryate ,
paśyantyā nihataṁ putraṁ putreṇa sahitaṁ raṇe.
25. katham tu śatadhā na idam hṛdayam mama dīryate
paśyantyā nihatam putram putreṇa sahitam raṇe
25. tu katham mama hṛdayam śatadhā na dīryate,
rane putreṇa sahitam nihatam putram paśyantyā
25. But why does not my heart burst into a hundred pieces, as I (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) see my son (Duryodhana) slain in battle, along with his own son (Lakṣmaṇa)?
पुत्रं रुधिरसंसिक्तमुपजिघ्रत्यनिन्दिता ।
दुर्योधनं तु वामोरूः पाणिना परिमार्जति ॥२६॥
26. putraṁ rudhirasaṁsiktamupajighratyaninditā ,
duryodhanaṁ tu vāmorūḥ pāṇinā parimārjati.
26. putram rudhirasaṃsiktam upajighrati aninditā
duryodhanam tu vāmoruḥ pāṇinā parimārjati
26. aninditā rudhirasaṃsiktam putram upajighrati.
tu vāmoruḥ pāṇinā duryodhanam parimārjati.
26. The blameless woman (Bhanumati) sniffs her son (Lakṣmaṇa), who is drenched in blood. And with her hand, the woman with beautiful thighs caresses Duryodhana.
किं नु शोचति भर्तारं पुत्रं चैषा मनस्विनी ।
तथा ह्यवस्थिता भाति पुत्रं चाप्यभिवीक्ष्य सा ॥२७॥
27. kiṁ nu śocati bhartāraṁ putraṁ caiṣā manasvinī ,
tathā hyavasthitā bhāti putraṁ cāpyabhivīkṣya sā.
27. kim nu śocati bhartāram putram ca eṣā manasvinī
tathā hi avasthitā bhāti putram ca api abhivīkṣya sā
27. eṣā manasvinī bhartāram putram ca kim nu śocati hi
sā putram ca api abhivīkṣya tathā avasthitā bhāti
27. Why, indeed, does this high-minded woman grieve for her husband and son? For she appears in such a state, having just looked upon her son.
स्वशिरः पञ्चशाखाभ्यामभिहत्यायतेक्षणा ।
पतत्युरसि वीरस्य कुरुराजस्य माधव ॥२८॥
28. svaśiraḥ pañcaśākhābhyāmabhihatyāyatekṣaṇā ,
patatyurasi vīrasya kururājasya mādhava.
28. svaśiraḥ pañcaśākhābhyām abhihatya āyatekṣaṇā
patati urasi vīrasya kururājasya mādhava
28. mādhava āyatekṣaṇā svaśiraḥ pañcaśākhābhyām
abhihatya vīrasya kururājasya urasi patati
28. O Madhava, with wide eyes, having struck her own head with her two hands, she falls onto the chest of the hero, the king of the Kurus.
पुण्डरीकनिभा भाति पुण्डरीकान्तरप्रभा ।
मुखं विमृज्य पुत्रस्य भर्तुश्चैव तपस्विनी ॥२९॥
29. puṇḍarīkanibhā bhāti puṇḍarīkāntaraprabhā ,
mukhaṁ vimṛjya putrasya bhartuścaiva tapasvinī.
29. puṇḍarīkanibhā bhāti puṇḍarīkāntaraprabhā mukham
vimṛjya putrasya bhartuḥ ca eva tapasvinī
29. tapasvinī puṇḍarīkanibhā puṇḍarīkāntaraprabhā
putrasya bhartuḥ ca eva mukham vimṛjya bhāti
29. The pitiable woman, whose appearance is lotus-like and whose brilliance is like the inner part of a lotus, wipes the faces of her son and her husband.
यदि चाप्यागमाः सन्ति यदि वा श्रुतयस्तथा ।
ध्रुवं लोकानवाप्तोऽयं नृपो बाहुबलार्जितान् ॥३०॥
30. yadi cāpyāgamāḥ santi yadi vā śrutayastathā ,
dhruvaṁ lokānavāpto'yaṁ nṛpo bāhubalārjitān.
30. yadi ca api āgamāḥ santi yadi vā śrutayaḥ tathā
dhruvam lokān avāptaḥ ayam nṛpaḥ bāhubalārjitān
30. yadi ca api āgamāḥ santi yadi vā śrutayaḥ tathā
(tarhi) dhruvam ayam nṛpaḥ bāhubalārjitān lokān avāptaḥ
30. If there are indeed traditions (āgamas), or if there are sacred texts (śrutis) that state it to be so, then this king has certainly attained worlds earned by the strength of his arms.
