दत्तानां फलसंप्राप्तिं गवां प्रब्रूहि मेऽनघ ।
विस्तरेण महाबाहो न हि तृप्यामि कथ्यताम् ॥१॥

dattānāṁ phalasaṁprāptiṁ gavāṁ prabrūhi me'nagha ,

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O sinless one, O mighty-armed one, tell me in detail about the attainment of results from the donation of cows. Indeed, I am not yet satisfied, let it be told."
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
ऋषेरुद्दालकेर्वाक्यं नाचिकेतस्य चोभयोः ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
ṛṣeruddālakervākyaṁ nāciketasya cobhayoḥ.

purātanam ṛṣeḥ uddālakeḥ vākyam nāciketasya ca ubhayoḥ
2. Bhishma spoke: "Here, they also cite this ancient narrative (itihāsa) – the words of both the sage Uddālaka and Nachiketa."
ऋषिरुद्दालकिर्दीक्षामुपगम्य ततः सुतम् ।
त्वं मामुपचरस्वेति नाचिकेतमभाषत ।
समाप्ते नियमे तस्मिन्महर्षिः पुत्रमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. ṛṣiruddālakirdīkṣāmupagamya tataḥ sutam ,
tvaṁ māmupacarasveti nāciketamabhāṣata ,
samāpte niyame tasminmaharṣiḥ putramabravīt.
3. ṛṣiḥ uddālakiḥ dīkṣām upagamya
tataḥ sutam tvam mām upacarasva
iti nāciketam abhāṣata samāpte
niyame tasmin maharṣiḥ putram abravīt
3. The sage Uddālaka, having undertaken the initiation (dīkṣā), then said to his son Nachiketa, "You should attend to me." When that vow (niyama) was completed, the great sage spoke again to his son.
उपस्पर्शनसक्तस्य स्वाध्यायनिरतस्य च ।
इध्मा दर्भाः सुमनसः कलशश्चाभितो जलम् ।
विस्मृतं मे तदादाय नदीतीरादिहाव्रज ॥४॥
4. upasparśanasaktasya svādhyāyaniratasya ca ,
idhmā darbhāḥ sumanasaḥ kalaśaścābhito jalam ,
vismṛtaṁ me tadādāya nadītīrādihāvraja.

kalaśaḥ ca abhitaḥ jalam vismṛtam

4. "To me, who is engaged in purification rites (upasparśana) and devoted to Vedic study (svādhyāya), I have forgotten the firewood, kusha grass, flowers, and the water pot with water. Bring them from the river bank and come here."
गत्वानवाप्य तत्सर्वं नदीवेगसमाप्लुतम् ।
न पश्यामि तदित्येवं पितरं सोऽब्रवीन्मुनिः ॥५॥
5. gatvānavāpya tatsarvaṁ nadīvegasamāplutam ,
na paśyāmi tadityevaṁ pitaraṁ so'bravīnmuniḥ.
5. gatvā anavāpya tat sarvam nadīvegasamāplutam na
paśyāmi tat iti evam pitaram saḥ abravīt muniḥ
5. Having gone and not found all of it, as it was submerged by the river's current, that sage (Nachiketa) said to his father, "I do not see it."
क्षुत्पिपासाश्रमाविष्टो मुनिरुद्दालकिस्तदा ।
यमं पश्येति तं पुत्रमशपत्स महातपाः ॥६॥
6. kṣutpipāsāśramāviṣṭo muniruddālakistadā ,
yamaṁ paśyeti taṁ putramaśapatsa mahātapāḥ.
6. kṣut pipāsā śrama āviṣṭaḥ muniḥ uddālakiḥ tadā
yamam paśya iti tam putram aśapat saḥ mahātapāḥ
6. saḥ mahātapāḥ muniḥ uddālakiḥ kṣutpipāsāśramāviṣṭaḥ
tadā tam putram "yamam paśya" iti aśapat
6. Afflicted by hunger, thirst, and fatigue, the great ascetic (muni) Uddālaka then cursed that son, saying, 'Go see Yama!'
तथा स पित्राभिहतो वाग्वज्रेण कृताञ्जलिः ।
प्रसीदेति ब्रुवन्नेव गतसत्त्वोऽपतद्भुवि ॥७॥
7. tathā sa pitrābhihato vāgvajreṇa kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
prasīdeti bruvanneva gatasattvo'patadbhuvi.
7. tathā saḥ pitrā abhihataḥ vāk vajreṇa kṛta añjaliḥ
prasīda iti bruvan eva gata sattvaḥ apatat bhuvi
7. tathā saḥ pitrā vāk vajreṇa abhihataḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
"prasīda" iti bruvan eva gatasattvaḥ bhuvi apatat
7. Struck by his father's thunderbolt-like words, he, with folded hands, lost consciousness and fell to the ground even as he pleaded, 'Be pleased!'
नाचिकेतं पिता दृष्ट्वा पतितं दुःखमूर्छितः ।
किं मया कृतमित्युक्त्वा निपपात महीतले ॥८॥
8. nāciketaṁ pitā dṛṣṭvā patitaṁ duḥkhamūrchitaḥ ,
kiṁ mayā kṛtamityuktvā nipapāta mahītale.
8. nāciketam pitā dṛṣṭvā patitam duḥkha mūrcchitaḥ
kim mayā kṛtam iti uktvā nipapāta mahītale
8. pitā patitam nāciketam dṛṣṭvā duḥkhamūrcchitaḥ
(san) "kim mayā kṛtam" iti uktvā mahītale nipapāta
8. Upon seeing Naciketa fallen and overcome with grief, the father, saying 'What have I done?', himself collapsed onto the ground.
तस्य दुःखपरीतस्य स्वं पुत्रमुपगूहतः ।
व्यतीतं तदहःशेषं सा चोग्रा तत्र शर्वरी ॥९॥
9. tasya duḥkhaparītasya svaṁ putramupagūhataḥ ,
vyatītaṁ tadahaḥśeṣaṁ sā cogrā tatra śarvarī.
9. tasya duḥkha parītasya svam putram upagūhataḥ
vyatītam tat ahaḥ śeṣam sā ca ugrā tatra śarvarī
9. duḥkhaparītasya tasya svam putram upagūhataḥ (san)
tat ahaḥśeṣam vyatītam ca tatra sā ugrā śarvarī (āsīt)
9. As he, overcome with sorrow, embraced his own son, the remaining portion of that day passed, and then that severe night ensued.
पित्र्येणाश्रुप्रपातेन नाचिकेतः कुरूद्वह ।
प्रास्पन्दच्छयने कौश्ये वृष्ट्या सस्यमिवाप्लुतम् ॥१०॥
10. pitryeṇāśruprapātena nāciketaḥ kurūdvaha ,
prāspandacchayane kauśye vṛṣṭyā sasyamivāplutam.
10. pitryeṇa aśruprapātena nāciketaḥ kurūdvaha
prāspandat śayane kauśye vṛṣṭyā sasyam iva āplutam

10. O descendant of Kuru, Nachiketa trembled on his silken couch from his father's falling tears, like a crop drenched by rain.
स पर्यपृच्छत्तं पुत्रं श्लाघ्यं प्रत्यागतं पुनः ।
दिव्यैर्गन्धैः समादिग्धं क्षीणस्वप्नमिवोत्थितम् ॥११॥
11. sa paryapṛcchattaṁ putraṁ ślāghyaṁ pratyāgataṁ punaḥ ,
divyairgandhaiḥ samādigdhaṁ kṣīṇasvapnamivotthitam.
11. sa paryapṛcchat tam putram ślāghyam pratyāgatam punaḥ
divyaiḥ gandhaiḥ samādigdham kṣīṇasvapnam iva utthitam
11. saḥ punaḥ pratyāgatam ślāghyam divyaiḥ gandhaiḥ samādigdham
kṣīṇasvapnam iva utthitam tam putram paryapṛcchat
11. He (Vaishravana) questioned that praiseworthy son, who had returned again, anointed with divine fragrances, like one who has awakened from a dream.
अपि पुत्र जिता लोकाः शुभास्ते स्वेन कर्मणा ।
दिष्ट्या चासि पुनः प्राप्तो न हि ते मानुषं वपुः ॥१२॥
12. api putra jitā lokāḥ śubhāste svena karmaṇā ,
diṣṭyā cāsi punaḥ prāpto na hi te mānuṣaṁ vapuḥ.
12. api putra jitāḥ lokāḥ śubhāḥ te svena karmaṇā
diṣṭyā ca asi punaḥ prāptaḥ na hi te mānuṣam vapuḥ
12. putra api svena karmaṇā te śubhāḥ lokāḥ jitāḥ ca
diṣṭyā tvam punaḥ prāptaḥ asi hi te vapuḥ mānuṣam na
12. "O son, have you conquered auspicious realms through your own action (karma)? And fortunately, you have returned again, for your body is indeed not human."
प्रत्यक्षदर्शी सर्वस्य पित्रा पृष्टो महात्मना ।
अन्वर्थं तं पितुर्मध्ये महर्षीणां न्यवेदयत् ॥१३॥
13. pratyakṣadarśī sarvasya pitrā pṛṣṭo mahātmanā ,
anvarthaṁ taṁ piturmadhye maharṣīṇāṁ nyavedayat.
13. pratyakṣadarśī sarvasya pitrā pṛṣṭaḥ mahātmanā
anvartham tam pituḥ madhye maharṣīṇām nyavedayat
13. mahātmanā pitrā pṛṣṭaḥ sarvasya pratyakṣadarśī
pituḥ maharṣīṇām madhye tam anvartham nyavedayat
13. Being questioned by his noble father, Nachiketa, who was a direct perceiver of all, appropriately reported the matter amidst the great sages.
कुर्वन्भवच्छासनमाशु यातो ह्यहं विशालां रुचिरप्रभावाम् ।
वैवस्वतीं प्राप्य सभामपश्यं सहस्रशो योजनहैमभौमाम् ॥१४॥
14. kurvanbhavacchāsanamāśu yāto; hyahaṁ viśālāṁ ruciraprabhāvām ,
vaivasvatīṁ prāpya sabhāmapaśyaṁ; sahasraśo yojanahaimabhaumām.
14. kurvan bhavat śāsanam āśu yātaḥ hi
aham viśālām rucira-prabhāvām |
vaivasvatīm prāpya sabhām apaśyam
sahasraśaḥ yojana-haima-bhaumāām
14. Indeed, quickly carrying out your command, I went and, having reached the vast and splendidly magnificent assembly hall of Vaivasvata (Yama), I saw it to be golden-surfaced for thousands of yojanas.
दृष्ट्वैव मामभिमुखमापतन्तं गृहं निवेद्यासनमादिदेश ।
वैवस्वतोऽर्घ्यादिभिरर्हणैश्च भवत्कृते पूजयामास मां सः ॥१५॥
15. dṛṣṭvaiva māmabhimukhamāpatantaṁ; gṛhaṁ nivedyāsanamādideśa ,
vaivasvato'rghyādibhirarhaṇaiśca; bhavatkṛte pūjayāmāsa māṁ saḥ.
15. dṛṣṭvā eva mām abhimukham āpatantam
gṛham nivedya āsanam ādiśeśa |
vaivasvataḥ arghya-ādibhiḥ arhaṇaiḥ
ca bhavat-kṛte pūjayām āsa mām saḥ
15. Just upon seeing me approaching directly, he offered me a dwelling and indicated a seat. Vaivasvata (Yama) then worshipped me with offerings of water (arghya) and other reverences, performing this on your behalf.
ततस्त्वहं तं शनकैरवोचं वृतं सदस्यैरभिपूज्यमानम् ।
प्राप्तोऽस्मि ते विषयं धर्मराज लोकानर्हे यान्स्म तान्मे विधत्स्व ॥१६॥
16. tatastvahaṁ taṁ śanakairavocaṁ; vṛtaṁ sadasyairabhipūjyamānam ,
prāpto'smi te viṣayaṁ dharmarāja; lokānarhe yānsma tānme vidhatsva.
16. tataḥ tu aham tam śanakaiḥ avocam
vṛtam sadasyaiḥ abhipūjyamānam |
prāptaḥ asmi te viṣayam dharma-rāja
lokān arhe yān sma tān me vidhatsva
16. Then, I slowly spoke to him, who was surrounded and being honored by the assembly members: 'O King of (dharma)! I have arrived in your realm. Please assign to me those worlds (lokas) of which I am worthy.'
यमोऽब्रवीन्मां न मृतोऽसि सौम्य यमं पश्येत्याह तु त्वां तपस्वी ।
पिता प्रदीप्ताग्निसमानतेजा न तच्छक्यमनृतं विप्र कर्तुम् ॥१७॥
17. yamo'bravīnmāṁ na mṛto'si saumya; yamaṁ paśyetyāha tu tvāṁ tapasvī ,
pitā pradīptāgnisamānatejā; na tacchakyamanṛtaṁ vipra kartum.
17. yamaḥ abravīt mām na mṛtaḥ asi saumya
yamam paśya iti āha tu tvām tapasvī
| pitā pradīpta-agni-samāna-tejāḥ
na tat śakyam anṛtam vipra kartum
17. Yama said to me, 'O gentle one! You are not dead. But your ascetic father, whose brilliance is like a blazing fire, said to you, "See Yama!" O Brahmin, it is not possible for him to utter a falsehood.'
दृष्टस्तेऽहं प्रतिगच्छस्व तात शोचत्यसौ तव देहस्य कर्ता ।
ददामि किं चापि मनःप्रणीतं प्रियातिथे तव कामान्वृणीष्व ॥१८॥
18. dṛṣṭaste'haṁ pratigacchasva tāta; śocatyasau tava dehasya kartā ,
dadāmi kiṁ cāpi manaḥpraṇītaṁ; priyātithe tava kāmānvṛṇīṣva.
18. dṛṣṭaḥ te aham pratigacchasva tāta
śocati asau tava dehasya kartā
| dadāmi kim ca api manaḥpraṇītam
priyaātithhe tava kāmān vṛṇīṣva
18. tāta te aham dṛṣṭaḥ pratigacchasva
asau tava dehasya kartā śocati
priyātithhe manaḥpraṇītam kim
ca api dadāmi tava kāmān vṛṇīṣva
18. You have seen me; return now, dear one. The one who created your body is grieving (for you). I grant whatever is cherished in your mind, beloved guest; choose your desires.
तेनैवमुक्तस्तमहं प्रत्यवोचं प्राप्तोऽस्मि ते विषयं दुर्निवर्त्यम् ।
इच्छाम्यहं पुण्यकृतां समृद्धाँल्लोकान्द्रष्टुं यदि तेऽहं वरार्हः ॥१९॥
19. tenaivamuktastamahaṁ pratyavocaṁ; prāpto'smi te viṣayaṁ durnivartyam ,
icchāmyahaṁ puṇyakṛtāṁ samṛddhāँ;llokāndraṣṭuṁ yadi te'haṁ varārhaḥ.
19. tena evam uktaḥ tam aham pratyavocam
prāptaḥ asmi te viṣayam durnivartyam
| icchāmi aham puṇyakṛtām samṛddhān
lokān draṣṭum yadi te aham varārhaḥ
19. tena evam uktaḥ aham tam pratyavocam te durnivartyam viṣayam prāptaḥ asmi yadi aham te varārhaḥ,
puṇyakṛtām samṛddhān lokān draṣṭum icchāmi
19. When he spoke to me thus, I replied to him: 'I have reached your realm, which is difficult to leave. I wish to see the prosperous worlds of those who have performed meritorious (karma), if I am worthy of receiving a boon from you.'
यानं समारोप्य तु मां स देवो वाहैर्युक्तं सुप्रभं भानुमन्तम् ।
संदर्शयामास तदा स्म लोकान्सर्वांस्तदा पुण्यकृतां द्विजेन्द्र ॥२०॥
20. yānaṁ samāropya tu māṁ sa devo; vāhairyuktaṁ suprabhaṁ bhānumantam ,
saṁdarśayāmāsa tadā sma lokā;nsarvāṁstadā puṇyakṛtāṁ dvijendra.
20. yānam samāropya tu mām sa devaḥ
vāhaiḥ yuktam suprabham bhānumantam
| saṃdarśayām āsa tadā sma lokān
sarvān tadā puṇyakṛtām dvijendra
20. dvijendra tadā sa devaḥ mām vāhaiḥ
yuktam suprabham bhānumantam
yānam samāropya tu tadā sarvān
puṇyakṛtām lokān saṃdarśayām āsa sma
20. Then that deity, placing me on a brilliant, sun-like vehicle yoked with steeds, indeed showed me all the worlds of those who have performed meritorious (karma), O chief of twice-born (dvijendra).
अपश्यं तत्र वेश्मानि तैजसानि कृतात्मनाम् ।
नानासंस्थानरूपाणि सर्वरत्नमयानि च ॥२१॥
21. apaśyaṁ tatra veśmāni taijasāni kṛtātmanām ,
nānāsaṁsthānarūpāṇi sarvaratnamayāni ca.
21. apaśyam tatra veśmāni taijasāni kṛtaātmanām
| nānāsaṃsthānarūpāṇi sarvaratnamayāni ca
21. tatra aham kṛtātmanām taijasāni nānāsaṃsthānarūpāṇi
ca sarvaratnamayāni veśmāni apaśyam
21. There I saw shining mansions belonging to perfected beings (kṛtātman), having diverse forms and structures, and made entirely of all kinds of jewels.
चन्द्रमण्डलशुभ्राणि किङ्किणीजालवन्ति च ।
अनेकशतभौमानि सान्तर्जलवनानि च ॥२२॥
22. candramaṇḍalaśubhrāṇi kiṅkiṇījālavanti ca ,
anekaśatabhaumāni sāntarjalavanāni ca.
22. candramaṇḍalaśubhrāṇi kiṅkiṇījālavanti
ca anekaśatabhaumāni sāntarjalavanāni ca
22. candramaṇḍalaśubhrāṇi kiṅkiṇījālavanti

22. They were bright white like the moon's orb, adorned with networks of small bells, possessing many hundreds of floors, and featuring inner groves with water.
वैडूर्यार्कप्रकाशानि रूप्यरुक्ममयानि च ।
तरुणादित्यवर्णानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ॥२३॥
23. vaiḍūryārkaprakāśāni rūpyarukmamayāni ca ,
taruṇādityavarṇāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca.
23. vaiḍūryārkaprakāśāni rūpyarukmamayāni ca
taruṇādityavarṇāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca
23. vaiḍūryārkaprakāśāni rūpyarukmamayāni ca
taruṇādityavarṇāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca
23. They possessed the radiance of cat's-eye gems and the sun, were made of silver and gold, had the hue of the rising sun, and encompassed both stationary and moving things.
भक्ष्यभोज्यमयाञ्शैलान्वासांसि शयनानि च ।
सर्वकामफलांश्चैव वृक्षान्भवनसंस्थितान् ॥२४॥
24. bhakṣyabhojyamayāñśailānvāsāṁsi śayanāni ca ,
sarvakāmaphalāṁścaiva vṛkṣānbhavanasaṁsthitān.
24. bhakṣyabhojyamayān śailān vāsāṃsi śayanāni ca
sarvakāmaphalān ca eva vṛkṣān bhavanasaṃsthitān
24. bhakṣyabhojyamayān śailān vāsāṃsi śayanāni ca
sarvakāmaphalān bhavanasaṃsthitān vṛkṣān ca eva
24. There were mountains composed of various foods and delicacies, along with residences, beds, and trees bearing all desired fruits, situated within the palaces.
नद्यो वीथ्यः सभा वापी दीर्घिकाश्चैव सर्वशः ।
घोषवन्ति च यानानि युक्तान्येव सहस्रशः ॥२५॥
25. nadyo vīthyaḥ sabhā vāpī dīrghikāścaiva sarvaśaḥ ,
ghoṣavanti ca yānāni yuktānyeva sahasraśaḥ.
25. nadyaḥ vīthyaḥ sabhā vāpī dīrghikāḥ ca eva sarvaśaḥ
| ghoṣavanti ca yānāni yuktāni eva sahasraśaḥ
25. nadyaḥ vīthyaḥ sabhā vāpī dīrghikāḥ ca eva sarvaśaḥ
ghoṣavanti ca yānāni yuktāni eva sahasraśaḥ
25. Rivers, streets, assembly halls, ponds, and long tanks were everywhere; and thousands of well-equipped, resonant vehicles were also present.
क्षीरस्रवा वै सरितो गिरींश्च सर्पिस्तथा विमलं चापि तोयम् ।
वैवस्वतस्यानुमतांश्च देशानदृष्टपूर्वान्सुबहूनपश्यम् ॥२६॥
26. kṣīrasravā vai sarito girīṁśca; sarpistathā vimalaṁ cāpi toyam ,
vaivasvatasyānumatāṁśca deśā;nadṛṣṭapūrvānsubahūnapaśyam.
26. kṣīrasravāḥ vai saritaḥ girīn ca
sarpiḥ tathā vimalam ca api toyam
| vaivasvatasya anumatān ca
deśān adṛṣṭapūrvān subahūn apaśyam
26. Indeed, I beheld rivers flowing with milk, and mountains of ghee, and also pure water. I also saw very many previously unseen regions approved by Yama (Vaivasvata).
सर्वं दृष्ट्वा तदहं धर्मराजमवोचं वै प्रभविष्णुं पुराणम् ।
क्षीरस्यैताः सर्पिषश्चैव नद्यः शश्वत्स्रोताः कस्य भोज्याः प्रदिष्टाः ॥२७॥
27. sarvaṁ dṛṣṭvā tadahaṁ dharmarāja;mavocaṁ vai prabhaviṣṇuṁ purāṇam ,
kṣīrasyaitāḥ sarpiṣaścaiva nadyaḥ; śaśvatsrotāḥ kasya bhojyāḥ pradiṣṭāḥ.
27. sarvam dṛṣṭvā tat aham dharmarājam
avocam vai prabhaviṣṇum purāṇam |
kṣīrasya etāḥ sarpiṣaḥ ca eva nadyaḥ
śaśvat srotāḥ kasya bhojyāḥ pradiṣṭāḥ
27. Having seen all that, I then said to the mighty, ancient king of (dharma) [Yama]: 'Whose are these perpetually flowing rivers of milk and ghee, ordained to be enjoyed?'
यमोऽब्रवीद्विद्धि भोज्यास्त्वमेता ये दातारः साधवो गोरसानाम् ।
अन्ये लोकाः शाश्वता वीतशोकाः समाकीर्णा गोप्रदाने रतानाम् ॥२८॥
28. yamo'bravīdviddhi bhojyāstvametā; ye dātāraḥ sādhavo gorasānām ,
anye lokāḥ śāśvatā vītaśokāḥ; samākīrṇā gopradāne ratānām.
28. yamaḥ abravīt viddhi bhojyāḥ tvam
etāḥ ye dātāraḥ sādhavaḥ gorasānām
| anye lokāḥ śāśvatāḥ vītaśokāḥ
samākīrṇāḥ gopradāne ratānām
28. Yama said, 'Know that these (rivers) are to be enjoyed by those righteous people who are givers of cow-products. Other eternal, sorrowless realms are filled with those who delight in the giving of cows.'
न त्वेवासां दानमात्रं प्रशस्तं पात्रं कालो गोविशेषो विधिश्च ।
ज्ञात्वा देया विप्र गवान्तरं हि दुःखं ज्ञातुं पावकादित्यभूतम् ॥२९॥
29. na tvevāsāṁ dānamātraṁ praśastaṁ; pātraṁ kālo goviśeṣo vidhiśca ,
jñātvā deyā vipra gavāntaraṁ hi; duḥkhaṁ jñātuṁ pāvakādityabhūtam.
29. na tu eva āsām dānamātram praśastam
pātram kālaḥ goviśeṣaḥ vidhiḥ
ca | jñātvā deyā vipra gavāntaram
hi duḥkham jñātum pāvakādityabhūtam
29. However, for these (cows), not merely the act of giving is esteemed; the worthy recipient, the opportune time, the specific quality of the cow, and the proper procedure are also important. O Brahmin, having understood these, cows should be given, for it is indeed difficult to ascertain the exact nature of cows, which are essentially like fire and the sun.
स्वाध्यायाढ्यो योऽतिमात्रं तपस्वी वैतानस्थो ब्राह्मणः पात्रमासाम् ।
कृच्छ्रोत्सृष्टाः पोषणाभ्यागताश्च द्वारैरेतैर्गोविशेषाः प्रशस्ताः ॥३०॥
30. svādhyāyāḍhyo yo'timātraṁ tapasvī; vaitānastho brāhmaṇaḥ pātramāsām ,
kṛcchrotsṛṣṭāḥ poṣaṇābhyāgatāśca; dvārairetairgoviśeṣāḥ praśastāḥ.

ca goviśeṣāḥ etaiḥ dvāraiḥ praśastāḥ
30. A brahmin who is diligent in personal Vedic study (svādhyāya), exceedingly ascetic (tapasvī), and engaged in Vedic rituals (vaitānasthaḥ) is a worthy recipient for these cows. Through these means, specific kinds of cows - those released from hardship and those seeking sustenance - are considered commendable.
तिस्रो रात्रीरद्भिरुपोष्य भूमौ तृप्ता गावस्तर्पितेभ्यः प्रदेयाः ।
वत्सैः प्रीताः सुप्रजाः सोपचारास्त्र्यहं दत्त्वा गोरसैर्वर्तितव्यम् ॥३१॥
31. tisro rātrīradbhirupoṣya bhūmau; tṛptā gāvastarpitebhyaḥ pradeyāḥ ,
vatsaiḥ prītāḥ suprajāḥ sopacārā;stryahaṁ dattvā gorasairvartitavyam.

dattvā tryaham go-rasaiḥ vartitavyam
31. After fasting for three nights, subsisting on water and resting on the ground, satisfied cows should be given to those who are deserving of satisfaction. Once the cows are contented with their calves, have good offspring, and have been properly tended to, one should subsist on milk products for three days after the donation.
दत्त्वा धेनुं सुव्रतां कांस्यदोहां कल्याणवत्सामपलायिनीं च ।
यावन्ति लोमानि भवन्ति तस्यास्तावद्वर्षाण्यश्नुते स्वर्गलोकम् ॥३२॥
32. dattvā dhenuṁ suvratāṁ kāṁsyadohāṁ; kalyāṇavatsāmapalāyinīṁ ca ,
yāvanti lomāni bhavanti tasyā;stāvadvarṣāṇyaśnute svargalokam.

32. Having donated a well-behaved cow that is accustomed to being milked into a bronze vessel, has auspicious calves, and does not stray, one enjoys the heavenly realm (svargalokam) for as many years as there are hairs on her body.
तथानड्वाहं ब्राह्मणाय प्रदाय दान्तं धुर्यं बलवन्तं युवानम् ।
कुलानुजीवं वीर्यवन्तं बृहन्तं भुङ्क्ते लोकान्संमितान्धेनुदस्य ॥३३॥
33. tathānaḍvāhaṁ brāhmaṇāya pradāya; dāntaṁ dhuryaṁ balavantaṁ yuvānam ,
kulānujīvaṁ vīryavantaṁ bṛhantaṁ; bhuṅkte lokānsaṁmitāndhenudasya.

33. Similarly, by offering a bull to a brahmin - a bull that is tamed, capable of carrying burdens, strong, young, supporting its lineage, vigorous, and large - the donor enjoys realms (lokān) equivalent to those obtained by donating a cow.
गोषु क्षान्तं गोशरण्यं कृतज्ञं वृत्तिग्लानं तादृशं पात्रमाहुः ।
वृत्तिग्लाने संभ्रमे वा महार्थे कृष्यर्थे वा होमहेतोः प्रसूत्याम् ॥३४॥
34. goṣu kṣāntaṁ gośaraṇyaṁ kṛtajñaṁ; vṛttiglānaṁ tādṛśaṁ pātramāhuḥ ,
vṛttiglāne saṁbhrame vā mahārthe; kṛṣyarthe vā homahetoḥ prasūtyām.

34. They declare a person who is patient with cows, a protector of cows, grateful, and whose livelihood is struggling, to be a worthy recipient. (Cows should be given) when one's livelihood is difficult, or in a time of crisis, or for a great purpose, or for agricultural needs, or for the sake of a Vedic fire ritual (homa), or for childbirth.
गुर्वर्थे वा बालपुष्ट्याभिषङ्गाद्गावो दातुं देशकालोऽविशिष्टः ।
अन्तर्जाताः सुक्रयज्ञानलब्धाः प्राणक्रीता निर्जिताश्चौदकाश्च ॥३५॥
35. gurvarthe vā bālapuṣṭyābhiṣaṅgā;dgāvo dātuṁ deśakālo'viśiṣṭaḥ ,
antarjātāḥ sukrayajñānalabdhāḥ; prāṇakrītā nirjitāścaudakāśca.

35. Or for the purpose of one's teacher (guru), or for the nourishment and welfare of children - for giving cows, there is no unsuitable place or time. (Also considered suitable are cows) born within one's own herd, acquired through good purchase and knowledge, those obtained through great effort, won (in battle or contest), and those (acquired) from water sources.
नाचिकेत उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा वैवस्वतवचस्तमहं पुनरब्रुवम् ।
अगोमी गोप्रदातॄणां कथं लोकान्निगच्छति ॥३६॥
36. nāciketa uvāca ,
śrutvā vaivasvatavacastamahaṁ punarabruvam ,
agomī gopradātṝṇāṁ kathaṁ lokānnigacchati.

36. Nāciketa said: Having heard the words of Vaivasvata (Yama), I spoke to him again: 'How does one who has not given cows attain the realms of those who donate cows?'
ततो यमोऽब्रवीद्धीमान्गोप्रदाने परां गतिम् ।
गोप्रदानानुकल्पं तु गामृते सन्ति गोप्रदाः ॥३७॥
37. tato yamo'bravīddhīmāngopradāne parāṁ gatim ,
gopradānānukalpaṁ tu gāmṛte santi gopradāḥ.
37. tataḥ yamaḥ abravīt dhīmān gopradāne parām gatim
| gopradānānukalpam tu gām ṛte santi gopradāḥ

37. Then the wise Yama spoke about the supreme attainment that comes from donating cows. He said: 'Indeed, there are also those who donate cows (figuratively), even without a physical cow, through a substitute for cow donation.'
अलाभे यो गवां दद्याद्घृतधेनुं यतव्रतः ।
तस्यैता घृतवाहिन्यः क्षरन्ते वत्सला इव ॥३८॥
38. alābhe yo gavāṁ dadyādghṛtadhenuṁ yatavrataḥ ,
tasyaitā ghṛtavāhinyaḥ kṣarante vatsalā iva.

38. A disciplined person who, when cows are unavailable, offers a symbolic ghee-cow (a cow made of ghee), for him, these rivers flowing with ghee stream forth like affectionate cows (to their calves).
घृतालाभे च यो दद्यात्तिलधेनुं यतव्रतः ।
स दुर्गात्तारितो धेन्वा क्षीरनद्यां प्रमोदते ॥३९॥
39. ghṛtālābhe ca yo dadyāttiladhenuṁ yatavrataḥ ,
sa durgāttārito dhenvā kṣīranadyāṁ pramodate.

39. And a disciplined person who, when ghee is unavailable, offers a symbolic sesame-cow (a cow made of sesame seeds), he is delivered from difficulty by that cow and rejoices in a river of milk.
तिलालाभे च यो दद्याज्जलधेनुं यतव्रतः ।
स कामप्रवहां शीतां नदीमेतामुपाश्नुते ॥४०॥
40. tilālābhe ca yo dadyājjaladhenuṁ yatavrataḥ ,
sa kāmapravahāṁ śītāṁ nadīmetāmupāśnute.
40. tilālābhe ca yaḥ dadyāt jaladhenum yatavrataḥ
saḥ kāmapravahām śītām nadīm etām upāśnute
40. yatavrataḥ yaḥ ca tilālābhe jaladhenum dadyāt

40. And a disciplined person who, when sesame is unavailable, offers a symbolic water-cow (a cow of water), he attains this cool river that flows according to desires.
एवमादीनि मे तत्र धर्मराजो न्यदर्शयत् ।
दृष्ट्वा च परमं हर्षमवापमहमच्युत ॥४१॥
41. evamādīni me tatra dharmarājo nyadarśayat ,
dṛṣṭvā ca paramaṁ harṣamavāpamahamacyuta.
41. evamādīni me tatra dharmarājaḥ ni-adarśayat
dṛṣṭvā ca paramam harṣam avāpam aham acyuta
41. dharmarājaḥ tatra me evamādīni ni-adarśayat
dṛṣṭvā ca aham acyuta paramam harṣam avāpam
41. There, the lord of (dharma) natural law showed me these and similar things. And having seen them, O Acyuta, I attained supreme joy.
निवेदये चापि प्रियं भवत्सु क्रतुर्महानल्पधनप्रचारः ।
प्राप्तो मया तात स मत्प्रसूतः प्रपत्स्यते वेदविधिप्रवृत्तः ॥४२॥
42. nivedaye cāpi priyaṁ bhavatsu; kraturmahānalpadhanapracāraḥ ,
prāpto mayā tāta sa matprasūtaḥ; prapatsyate vedavidhipravṛttaḥ.
42. nivedaye ca api priyam bhavatsu
kratuḥ mahān alpadhanapracāraḥ
prāptaḥ mayā tāta saḥ matprasūtaḥ
prapatsyate vedavidhipravṛttaḥ
42. tāta,
bhavatsu priyam ca api nivedaye.

42. I shall also inform you of a pleasing matter concerning you: A great Vedic ritual (yajña), requiring little expenditure of wealth, has been obtained by me. My dear one, that ritual, initiated by me, will be performed according to Vedic injunctions.
शापो ह्ययं भवतोऽनुग्रहाय प्राप्तो मया यत्र दृष्टो यमो मे ।
दानव्युष्टिं तत्र दृष्ट्वा महार्थां निःसंदिग्धं दानधर्मांश्चरिष्ये ॥४३॥
43. śāpo hyayaṁ bhavato'nugrahāya; prāpto mayā yatra dṛṣṭo yamo me ,
dānavyuṣṭiṁ tatra dṛṣṭvā mahārthāṁ; niḥsaṁdigdhaṁ dānadharmāṁścariṣye.
43. śāpaḥ hi ayam bhavataḥ anugrahāya
prāptaḥ mayā yatra dṛṣṭaḥ yamaḥ me
dānavyūṣṭim tatra dṛṣṭvā mahārthām
niḥsandigdham dānadharmān cariṣye
43. ayam śāpaḥ hi anugrahāya mayā prāptaḥ,
yatra me yamaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ.
tatra mahārthām dānavyūṣṭim dṛṣṭvā,
niḥsandigdham dānadharmān cariṣye.
43. This curse was indeed received by me as a blessing, for it was there that Yama was seen by me. Having witnessed there the greatly valuable fruit of giving (dāna), I shall undoubtedly practice the principles of giving (dāna).
इदं च मामब्रवीद्धर्मराजः पुनः पुनः संप्रहृष्टो द्विजर्षे ।
दानेन तात प्रयतोऽभूः सदैव विशेषतो गोप्रदानं च कुर्याः ॥४४॥
44. idaṁ ca māmabravīddharmarājaḥ; punaḥ punaḥ saṁprahṛṣṭo dvijarṣe ,
dānena tāta prayato'bhūḥ sadaiva; viśeṣato gopradānaṁ ca kuryāḥ.
44. idam ca mām abravīt dharmarājaḥ
punaḥ punaḥ samprahṛṣṭaḥ dvijarṣe

44. dvijarṣe,
samprahṛṣṭaḥ dharmarājaḥ punaḥ punaḥ idam ca mām abravīt: "tāta,
dānena sadaiva prayataḥ abhūḥ.
ca viśeṣataḥ gopradānam kuryāḥ.
"
44. And Dharmarāja (Yama), greatly pleased, repeatedly spoke this to me, O sage among the twice-born: 'My dear one, you have always been diligent in giving (dāna), and you should especially perform the giving of cows.'
शुद्धो ह्यर्थो नावमन्यः स्वधर्मात्पात्रे देयं देशकालोपपन्ने ।
तस्माद्गावस्ते नित्यमेव प्रदेया मा भूच्च ते संशयः कश्चिदत्र ॥४५॥
45. śuddho hyartho nāvamanyaḥ svadharmā;tpātre deyaṁ deśakālopapanne ,
tasmādgāvaste nityameva pradeyā; mā bhūcca te saṁśayaḥ kaścidatra.
45. śuddhaḥ hi arthaḥ na avamanyaḥ
svadharmāt pātre deyam deśakālopapanne
tasmāt gāvaḥ te nityam eva pradeyāḥ
mā bhūt ca te saṃśayaḥ kaścit atra
45. hi śuddhaḥ arthaḥ svadharmāt na avamanyaḥ.

gāvaḥ te nityam eva pradeyāḥ.
ca atra te kaścit saṃśayaḥ mā bhūt.
45. Indeed, pure wealth (artha) should not be disregarded in relation to one's own natural law (dharma). It should be given to a deserving recipient, appropriate to the time and place. Therefore, cows should always be given by you, and let there be no doubt of yours whatsoever in this matter.
एताः पुरा अददन्नित्यमेव शान्तात्मानो दानपथे निविष्टाः ।
तपांस्युग्राण्यप्रतिशङ्कमानास्ते वै दानं प्रददुश्चापि शक्त्या ॥४६॥
46. etāḥ purā adadannityameva; śāntātmāno dānapathe niviṣṭāḥ ,
tapāṁsyugrāṇyapratiśaṅkamānā;ste vai dānaṁ pradaduścāpi śaktyā.

46. In the past, these tranquil-minded (ātman) individuals, always devoted to the path of charity, unafraid of severe austerities, indeed gave gifts according to their capacity.
काले शक्त्या मत्सरं वर्जयित्वा शुद्धात्मानः श्रद्धिनः पुण्यशीलाः ।
दत्त्वा तप्त्वा लोकममुं प्रपन्ना देदीप्यन्ते पुण्यशीलाश्च नाके ॥४७॥
47. kāle śaktyā matsaraṁ varjayitvā; śuddhātmānaḥ śraddhinaḥ puṇyaśīlāḥ ,
dattvā taptvā lokamamuṁ prapannā; dedīpyante puṇyaśīlāśca nāke.

47. Having abandoned envy and giving according to their capacity at the proper time, those pure-hearted (ātman) individuals, full of faith (śraddhā) and virtuous conduct, having given gifts and performed austerities (tapas), attain this world and shine brightly in heaven.
एतद्दानं न्यायलब्धं द्विजेभ्यः पात्रे दत्तं प्रापणीयं परीक्ष्य ।
काम्याष्टम्यां वर्तितव्यं दशाहं रसैर्गवां शकृता प्रस्नवैर्वा ॥४८॥
48. etaddānaṁ nyāyalabdhaṁ dvijebhyaḥ; pātre dattaṁ prāpaṇīyaṁ parīkṣya ,
kāmyāṣṭamyāṁ vartitavyaṁ daśāhaṁ; rasairgavāṁ śakṛtā prasnavairvā.
48. etat dānam nyāyalabdham dvijebhyaḥ
pātre dattam prāpaṇīyam parīkṣya
kāmyāṣṭamyām vartitavyam daśāham
rasaiḥ gavām śakṛtā prasnavaiḥ vā

48. This lawfully obtained charity (dāna) should be given to Brahmins (dvija) after examining and ensuring they are worthy recipients. On an auspicious eighth day, one should observe a practice for ten days, subsisting on cow products like milk (rasa), cow dung, or cow urine.
वेदव्रती स्याद्वृषभप्रदाता वेदावाप्तिर्गोयुगस्य प्रदाने ।
तीर्थावाप्तिर्गोप्रयुक्तप्रदाने पापोत्सर्गः कपिलायाः प्रदाने ॥४९॥
49. vedavratī syādvṛṣabhapradātā; vedāvāptirgoyugasya pradāne ,
tīrthāvāptirgoprayuktapradāne; pāpotsargaḥ kapilāyāḥ pradāne.

49. One who donates a bull (vṛṣabha) becomes an observer of Vedic vows. The attainment of Vedic knowledge is gained by giving a pair of cows. The attainment of pilgrimage sites (tīrtha) is gained by giving anything related to cows. The abandonment of sin is achieved by giving a tawny cow (kapilā).
गामप्येकां कपिलां संप्रदाय न्यायोपेतां कल्मषाद्विप्रमुच्येत् ।
गवां रसात्परमं नास्ति किंचिद्गवां दानं सुमहत्तद्वदन्ति ॥५०॥
50. gāmapyekāṁ kapilāṁ saṁpradāya; nyāyopetāṁ kalmaṣādvipramucyet ,
gavāṁ rasātparamaṁ nāsti kiṁci;dgavāṁ dānaṁ sumahattadvadanti.
50. gām api ekām kapilām sampradāya
nyāyopetām kalmaṣāt vipramucyet |
gavām rasāt paramam na asti kiñcit
gavām dānam sumahat tat vadanti
50. ekām api kapilām gām nyāyopetām sampradāya,
(saḥ) kalmaṣāt vipramucyet gavām rasāt paramam kiñcit na asti tat gavām dānam sumahat vadanti.
50. By properly donating even one tawny cow, endowed with justice, one is completely freed from sin. There is nothing superior to the essence of cows; people declare the donation (dāna) of cows to be very great.
गावो लोकान्धारयन्ति क्षरन्त्यो गावश्चान्नं संजनयन्ति लोके ।
यस्तज्जानन्न गवां हार्दमेति स वै गन्ता निरयं पापचेताः ॥५१॥
51. gāvo lokāndhārayanti kṣarantyo; gāvaścānnaṁ saṁjanayanti loke ,
yastajjānanna gavāṁ hārdameti; sa vai gantā nirayaṁ pāpacetāḥ.
51. gāvaḥ lokān dhārayanti kṣarantyaḥ
gāvaḥ ca annam saṃjanayanti loke
| yaḥ tat jānan na gavām hārdam
eti saḥ vai gantā nirayam pāpacetāḥ
51. gāvaḥ kṣarantyaḥ lokān dhārayanti,
ca gāvaḥ loke annam saṃjanayanti yaḥ tat jānan gavām hārdam na eti,
saḥ pāpacetāḥ vai nirayam gantā.
51. Cows, by yielding milk, sustain the worlds, and cows also produce food in the world. Whoever, knowing this, does not approach the cows with affection, that person with a sinful mind will indeed go to hell.
यत्ते दातुं गोसहस्रं शतं वा शतार्धं वा दश वा साधुवत्साः ।
अप्येकां वा साधवे ब्राह्मणाय सास्यामुष्मिन्पुण्यतीर्था नदी वै ॥५२॥
52. yatte dātuṁ gosahasraṁ śataṁ vā; śatārdhaṁ vā daśa vā sādhuvatsāḥ ,
apyekāṁ vā sādhave brāhmaṇāya; sāsyāmuṣminpuṇyatīrthā nadī vai.
52. yat te dātum go-sahasram śatam vā
śatārdham vā daśa vā sādhu-vatsāḥ
| api ekām vā sādhave brāhmaṇāya sā
asyām amuṣmin puṇyatīrthā nadī vai
52. yat te go-sahasram vā śatam vā śatārdham vā daśa sādhu-vatsāḥ (gāvaḥ) dātum (asti),
vā api ekām sādhave brāhmaṇāya (dātum asti),
sā asyām amuṣmin puṇyatīrthā nadī vai.
52. What is to be given by you – a thousand cows, or a hundred, or fifty, or ten, (or even) one well-calved cow to a virtuous brahmin – that (act) is indeed like a sacred-forded river both in this world and the next.
प्राप्त्या पुष्ट्या लोकसंरक्षणेन गावस्तुल्याः सूर्यपादैः पृथिव्याम् ।
शब्दश्चैकः संततिश्चोपभोगस्तस्माद्गोदः सूर्य इवाभिभाति ॥५३॥
53. prāptyā puṣṭyā lokasaṁrakṣaṇena; gāvastulyāḥ sūryapādaiḥ pṛthivyām ,
śabdaścaikaḥ saṁtatiścopabhoga;stasmādgodaḥ sūrya ivābhibhāti.

gāvaḥ tulyāḥ sūrya-pādaiḥ pṛthivyām |
śabdaḥ ca ekaḥ saṃtatiḥ ca upabhogaḥ
tasmāt go-daḥ sūryaḥ iva abhibhāti
53. pṛthivyām gāvaḥ prāptyā puṣṭyā loka-saṃrakṣaṇena sūrya-pādaiḥ tulyāḥ ca ekaḥ śabdaḥ saṃtatiḥ ca upabhogaḥ (asti) tasmāt go-daḥ sūryaḥ iva abhibhāti.
53. On earth, cows are comparable to the rays of the sun in terms of attainment, nourishment, and the protection of the world. And (the cow also has) a unique sound, progeny, and enjoyment. Therefore, a cow-giver shines like the sun.
गुरुं शिष्यो वरयेद्गोप्रदाने स वै वक्ता नियतं स्वर्गदाता ।
विधिज्ञानां सुमहानेष धर्मो विधिं ह्याद्यं विधयः संश्रयन्ति ॥५४॥
54. guruṁ śiṣyo varayedgopradāne; sa vai vaktā niyataṁ svargadātā ,
vidhijñānāṁ sumahāneṣa dharmo; vidhiṁ hyādyaṁ vidhayaḥ saṁśrayanti.
54. gurum śiṣyaḥ varayet gopradāne sa
vai vaktā niyatam svargadātā
vidhijñānām sumahān eṣaḥ dharmaḥ vidhim
hi ādyam vidhayaḥ saṃśrayanti
54. śiṣyaḥ gurum gopradāne varayet saḥ
vai vaktā niyatam svargadātā
vidhijñānām eṣaḥ sumahān dharmaḥ hi
vidhayaḥ ādyam vidhim saṃśrayanti
54. A disciple (guru) should choose a preceptor (guru) for the cow-donation ritual. He (the preceptor) is indeed the speaker (of the injunctions) and certainly the bestower of heaven. For those who understand Vedic rituals (vidhi), this is a very great natural law (dharma); for all injunctions (vidhi) depend on the primordial injunction (vidhi).
एतद्दानं न्यायलब्धं द्विजेभ्यः पात्रे दत्त्वा प्रापयेथाः परीक्ष्य ।
त्वय्याशंसन्त्यमरा मानवाश्च वयं चापि प्रसृते पुण्यशीलाः ॥५५॥
55. etaddānaṁ nyāyalabdhaṁ dvijebhyaḥ; pātre dattvā prāpayethāḥ parīkṣya ,
tvayyāśaṁsantyamarā mānavāśca; vayaṁ cāpi prasṛte puṇyaśīlāḥ.
55. etat dānam nyāyalabdham dvijebhyaḥ
pātre dattvā prāpayethāḥ parīkṣya
tvayi āśaṃsanti amarāḥ mānavāḥ
ca vayam ca api prasṛte puṇyaśīlāḥ
55. parīkṣya pātre etat nyāyalabdham
dānam dattvā dvijebhyaḥ prāpayethāḥ
amarāḥ ca mānavāḥ ca vayam ca api
puṇyaśīlāḥ prasṛte tvayi āśaṃsanti
55. After examining worthy recipients (pātra), you should ensure that this lawfully acquired gift is given to deserving brahmins (dvija). Both the immortals and humans, and we too, who are of virtuous character, place our hopes in you concerning this ongoing (ritual).
इत्युक्तोऽहं धर्मराज्ञा महर्षे धर्मात्मानं शिरसाभिप्रणम्य ।
अनुज्ञातस्तेन वैवस्वतेन प्रत्यागमं भगवत्पादमूलम् ॥५६॥
56. ityukto'haṁ dharmarājñā maharṣe; dharmātmānaṁ śirasābhipraṇamya ,
anujñātastena vaivasvatena; pratyāgamaṁ bhagavatpādamūlam.
56. iti uktaḥ aham dharmarājñā maharṣe
dharmātmānam śirasā abhipraṇamya
anujñātaḥ tena vaivasvatena
pratyāgamam bhagavatpādamūlam
56. maharṣe iti aham dharmarājñā
uktaḥ dharmātmānam śirasā abhipraṇamya
tena vaivasvatena anujñātaḥ
bhagavatpādamūlam pratyāgamam
56. O great sage (maharṣi), thus was I addressed by Dharmarāja, the King of natural law (dharma). Having bowed my head to that virtuous being, and being permitted by him, Vaivasvata (Yama), I returned to the feet of the venerable one (Bhagavat).
