युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
श्रुतं मे महदाख्यानमेतत्कुरुकुलोद्वह ।
सुदुष्प्रापं ब्रवीषि त्वं ब्राह्मण्यं वदतां वर ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
śrutaṁ me mahadākhyānametatkurukulodvaha ,
suduṣprāpaṁ bravīṣi tvaṁ brāhmaṇyaṁ vadatāṁ vara.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O upholder of the Kuru lineage, I have heard this great narrative. You, O best among speakers, declare that brahminhood (brāhmaṇyam) is extremely difficult to attain.'
विश्वामित्रेण च पुरा ब्राह्मण्यं प्राप्तमित्युत ।
श्रूयते वदसे तच्च दुष्प्रापमिति सत्तम ॥२॥
2. viśvāmitreṇa ca purā brāhmaṇyaṁ prāptamityuta ,
śrūyate vadase tacca duṣprāpamiti sattama.

uta śrūyate vadase tat ca duṣprāpam iti sattama

2. And it is indeed heard that brahminhood (brāhmaṇyam) was attained by Viśvāmitra in ancient times. Yet, O excellent one, you state that it is difficult to obtain.
वीतहव्यश्च राजर्षिः श्रुतो मे विप्रतां गतः ।
तदेव तावद्गाङ्गेय श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं विभो ॥३॥
3. vītahavyaśca rājarṣiḥ śruto me vipratāṁ gataḥ ,
tadeva tāvadgāṅgeya śrotumicchāmyahaṁ vibho.
3. vītahavyaḥ ca rājarṣiḥ śrutaḥ me vipratām gataḥ
tat eva tāvat gāṅgeya śrotum icchāmi aham vibho
3. ca me śrutaḥ rājarṣiḥ vītahavyaḥ vipratām gataḥ

3. And I have heard that the royal sage Vītahavya also attained the state of a brahmin (vipratām). Therefore, O Gāṅgeya, O mighty one, I now wish to hear about that very topic.
स केन कर्मणा प्राप्तो ब्राह्मण्यं राजसत्तम ।
वरेण तपसा वापि तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हति ॥४॥
4. sa kena karmaṇā prāpto brāhmaṇyaṁ rājasattama ,
vareṇa tapasā vāpi tanme vyākhyātumarhati.

vareṇa tapasā vā api tat me vyākhyātum arhati

4. O best of kings, by what action (karma) did he attain brahminhood? Or was it by a boon or by austerity (tapas)? You ought to explain that to me.
भीष्म उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्यथा राजा वीतहव्यो महायशाः ।
क्षत्रियः सन्पुनः प्राप्तो ब्राह्मण्यं लोकसत्कृतम् ॥५॥
5. bhīṣma uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanyathā rājā vītahavyo mahāyaśāḥ ,
kṣatriyaḥ sanpunaḥ prāpto brāhmaṇyaṁ lokasatkṛtam.

5. Bhishma said: Listen, O King, how the highly renowned King Vītahavya, though a kshatriya, again attained brahminhood, which is revered in the world.
मनोर्महात्मनस्तात प्रजाधर्मेण शासतः ।
बभूव पुत्रो धर्मात्मा शर्यातिरिति विश्रुतः ॥६॥
6. manormahātmanastāta prajādharmeṇa śāsataḥ ,
babhūva putro dharmātmā śaryātiriti viśrutaḥ.
6. manoḥ mahātmanaḥ tāta prajādharmeṇa śāsataḥ
babhūva putraḥ dharmātmā śaryātiḥ iti viśrutaḥ
6. tāta prajādharmeṇa śāsataḥ mahātmanaḥ manoḥ
dharmātmā śaryātiḥ iti viśrutaḥ putraḥ babhūva
6. O dear one (tāta), to the great-souled Manu, who was ruling according to the natural law (dharma) for his subjects, a righteous son whose soul is (dharma) named Śaryāti was born.
तस्यान्ववाये द्वौ राजन्राजानौ संबभूवतुः ।
हेहयस्तालजङ्घश्च वत्सेषु जयतां वर ॥७॥
7. tasyānvavāye dvau rājanrājānau saṁbabhūvatuḥ ,
hehayastālajaṅghaśca vatseṣu jayatāṁ vara.
7. tasya anvavāye dvau rājan rājānau sambabhūvatuḥ
hehayaḥ tālajaṅghaḥ ca vatseṣu jayatām vara
7. rājan tasya anvavāye dvau rājānau hehayaḥ ca

7. O King, in his (Śaryāti's) lineage, two kings appeared: Hehaya and Tālajaṅgha, who were the best among conquerors in the region of the Vatsas.
हेहयस्य तु पुत्राणां दशसु स्त्रीषु भारत ।
शतं बभूव प्रख्यातं शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ॥८॥
8. hehayasya tu putrāṇāṁ daśasu strīṣu bhārata ,
śataṁ babhūva prakhyātaṁ śūrāṇāmanivartinām.

8. O Bhārata, among the ten wives of Hehaya's sons, a hundred renowned, unyielding heroes came into being.
तुल्यरूपप्रभावाणां विदुषां युद्धशालिनाम् ।
धनुर्वेदे च वेदे च सर्वत्रैव कृतश्रमाः ॥९॥
9. tulyarūpaprabhāvāṇāṁ viduṣāṁ yuddhaśālinām ,
dhanurvede ca vede ca sarvatraiva kṛtaśramāḥ.
9. tulyarūpaprabhāvāṇāṁ viduṣāṁ yuddhaśālinām
dhanurvede ca vede ca sarvatra eva kṛtaśramāḥ
9. tulyarūpaprabhāvāṇāṁ viduṣāṁ yuddhaśālinām ca

9. They possessed equal beauty and prowess, were learned, and excelled in warfare. They had put forth great effort in both the science of archery (Dhanurveda) and the (Vedic) scriptures (Veda).
काशिष्वपि नृपो राजन्दिवोदासपितामहः ।
हर्यश्व इति विख्यातो बभूव जयतां वरः ॥१०॥
10. kāśiṣvapi nṛpo rājandivodāsapitāmahaḥ ,
haryaśva iti vikhyāto babhūva jayatāṁ varaḥ.
10. kāśiṣu api nṛpaḥ rājan divodāsapitāmahaḥ
haryaśvaḥ iti vikhyātaḥ babhūva jayatām varaḥ
10. rājan kāśiṣu api divodāsapitāmahaḥ haryaśvaḥ
iti vikhyātaḥ nṛpaḥ jayatām varaḥ babhūva
10. O king, there was also a monarch in Kāśi, renowned as Haryaśva, who was the paternal grandfather of Divodāsa and was considered the best among conquerors.
स वीतहव्यदायादैरागत्य पुरुषर्षभ ।
गङ्गायमुनयोर्मध्ये संग्रामे विनिपातितः ॥११॥
11. sa vītahavyadāyādairāgatya puruṣarṣabha ,
gaṅgāyamunayormadhye saṁgrāme vinipātitaḥ.
11. sa vītahavyadāyādaiḥ āgatya puruṣarṣabha
gaṅgāyamunayoḥ madhye saṅgrāme vinipātitaḥ
11. puruṣarṣabha sa vītahavyadāyādaiḥ āgatya
gaṅgāyamunayoḥ madhye saṅgrāme vinipātitaḥ
11. O bull among men (puruṣarṣabha), he (Haryaśva) was struck down in a battle between the Gaṅgā and Yamunā by the descendants of Vītahavya, who had advanced there.
तं तु हत्वा नरवरं हेहयास्ते महारथाः ।
प्रतिजग्मुः पुरीं रम्यां वत्सानामकुतोभयाः ॥१२॥
12. taṁ tu hatvā naravaraṁ hehayāste mahārathāḥ ,
pratijagmuḥ purīṁ ramyāṁ vatsānāmakutobhayāḥ.
12. tam tu hatvā naravaram hehayāḥ te mahārathāḥ
pratijagmuḥ purīm ramyām vatsānām akutobhayāḥ
12. Those great chariot-warriors, the Haihayas, having killed that excellent man, returned fearlessly to the beautiful city of the Vatsas.
हर्यश्वस्य तु दायादः काशिराजोऽभ्यषिच्यत ।
सुदेवो देवसंकाशः साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः ॥१३॥
13. haryaśvasya tu dāyādaḥ kāśirājo'bhyaṣicyata ,
sudevo devasaṁkāśaḥ sākṣāddharma ivāparaḥ.
13. haryaśvasya tu dāyādaḥ kāśirājaḥ abhyaṣicyata
sudevaḥ devasaṃkāśaḥ sākṣāt dharma iva aparaḥ
13. But Sudeva, the heir of Haryaśva and the king of Kāśī, was consecrated. He was radiant like a god, truly like another manifestation of (dharma).
स पालयन्नेव महीं धर्मात्मा काशिनन्दनः ।
तैर्वीतहव्यैरागत्य युधि सर्वैर्विनिर्जितः ॥१४॥
14. sa pālayanneva mahīṁ dharmātmā kāśinandanaḥ ,
tairvītahavyairāgatya yudhi sarvairvinirjitaḥ.
14. sa pālayan eva mahīm dharmātmā kāśinandanaḥ taiḥ
vītahavyaiḥ āgatya yudhi sarvaiḥ vinirjitaḥ
14. That righteous-souled (dharma) king, the delight of Kāśī, while ruling the earth, was completely defeated in battle by all those Vītahavyas who had arrived.
तमप्याजौ विनिर्जित्य प्रतिजग्मुर्यथागतम् ।
सौदेविस्त्वथ काशीशो दिवोदासोऽभ्यषिच्यत ॥१५॥
15. tamapyājau vinirjitya pratijagmuryathāgatam ,
saudevistvatha kāśīśo divodāso'bhyaṣicyata.
15. tam api ājau vinirjitya pratijagmuḥ yathāgatam
saudeviḥ tu atha kāśīśaḥ divodāsaḥ abhyaṣicyata
15. Having defeated him too in battle, they returned the way they had come. Then, Divodāsa, the son of Sudeva (Saudevi) and lord of Kāśī, was consecrated.
दिवोदासस्तु विज्ञाय वीर्यं तेषां महात्मनाम् ।
वाराणसीं महातेजा निर्ममे शक्रशासनात् ॥१६॥
16. divodāsastu vijñāya vīryaṁ teṣāṁ mahātmanām ,
vārāṇasīṁ mahātejā nirmame śakraśāsanāt.
16. divodāsaḥ tu vijñāya vīryam teṣām mahātmanām
vārāṇasīm mahātejāḥ nirmame śakraśāsanāt
16. mahātejāḥ divodāsaḥ tu teṣām mahātmanām
vīryam vijñāya śakraśāsanāt vārāṇasīm nirmame
16. Divodāsa, the greatly radiant one, understanding the power of those great beings, constructed Vārāṇasī by the command of Indra.
विप्रक्षत्रियसंबाधां वैश्यशूद्रसमाकुलाम् ।
नैकद्रव्योच्चयवतीं समृद्धविपणापणाम् ॥१७॥
17. viprakṣatriyasaṁbādhāṁ vaiśyaśūdrasamākulām ,
naikadravyoccayavatīṁ samṛddhavipaṇāpaṇām.

naikadravyoccayavatīm samṛddhavipaṇāpaṇām

17. Filled with brahmins and kṣatriyas, densely populated by vaiśyas and śūdras, possessing an accumulation of countless goods, and bustling with prosperous shops and markets.
गङ्गाया उत्तरे कूले वप्रान्ते राजसत्तम ।
गोमत्या दक्षिणे चैव शक्रस्येवामरावतीम् ॥१८॥
18. gaṅgāyā uttare kūle vaprānte rājasattama ,
gomatyā dakṣiṇe caiva śakrasyevāmarāvatīm.
18. gaṅgāyāḥ uttare kūle vaprānte rājasattama
gomatyāḥ dakṣiṇe ca eva śakrasya iva amarāvatīm
18. rājasattama (he) gaṅgāyāḥ uttare kūle vaprānte,
ca eva gomatyāḥ dakṣiṇe śakrasya amarāvatīm iva (tām nirmame)
18. O best of kings, [he built it] on the northern bank of the Gaṅgā, at the edge of the rampart, and to the south of the Gomatī, like the city of Amarāvatī belonging to Indra.
तत्र तं राजशार्दूलं निवसन्तं महीपतिम् ।
आगत्य हेहया भूयः पर्यधावन्त भारत ॥१९॥
19. tatra taṁ rājaśārdūlaṁ nivasantaṁ mahīpatim ,
āgatya hehayā bhūyaḥ paryadhāvanta bhārata.
19. tatra tam rājaśārdūlam nivasantam mahīpatim
āgatya hehayāḥ bhūyaḥ paryadhāvanta bhārata
19. bhārata (he),
tatra nivasantam tam rājaśārdūlam mahīpatim āgatya hehayāḥ bhūyaḥ paryadhāvanta
19. O Bhārata, having arrived there, the Hehayas repeatedly attacked that king, the tiger among rulers, as he resided there.
स निष्पत्य ददौ युद्धं तेभ्यो राजा महाबलः ।
देवासुरसमं घोरं दिवोदासो महाद्युतिः ॥२०॥
20. sa niṣpatya dadau yuddhaṁ tebhyo rājā mahābalaḥ ,
devāsurasamaṁ ghoraṁ divodāso mahādyutiḥ.
20. sa niṣpatya dadau yuddham tebhyaḥ rājā mahābalaḥ
devāsurasamam ghoram divodāsaḥ mahādyutiḥ
20. sa mahābalaḥ mahādyutiḥ rājā divodāsaḥ niṣpatya
tebhyaḥ devāsurasamam ghoram yuddham dadau
20. The mighty king Divodāsa, resplendent and powerful, sallied forth and offered them a fierce battle, comparable to one between gods and asuras.
स तु युद्धे महाराज दिनानां दशतीर्दश ।
हतवाहनभूयिष्ठस्ततो दैन्यमुपागमत् ॥२१॥
21. sa tu yuddhe mahārāja dinānāṁ daśatīrdaśa ,
hatavāhanabhūyiṣṭhastato dainyamupāgamat.
21. sa tu yuddhe mahārāja dinānām daśatīḥ daśa
hatavāhanabhūyiṣṭhaḥ tataḥ dainyam upāgamat
21. tu mahārāja sa yuddhe daśatīḥ daśa dinānām
hatavāhanabhūyiṣṭhaḥ tataḥ dainyam upāgamat
21. However, O great king, after hundreds of days in battle, with most of his vehicles and mounts destroyed, he then fell into a state of misery.
हतयोधस्ततो राजन्क्षीणकोशश्च भूमिपः ।
दिवोदासः पुरीं हित्वा पलायनपरोऽभवत् ॥२२॥
22. hatayodhastato rājankṣīṇakośaśca bhūmipaḥ ,
divodāsaḥ purīṁ hitvā palāyanaparo'bhavat.
22. hatayodhaḥ tataḥ rājan kṣīṇakośaḥ ca bhūmipaḥ
divodāsaḥ purīm hitvā palāyanaparaḥ abhavat
22. tataḥ rājan divodāsaḥ bhūmipaḥ hatayodhaḥ ca
kṣīṇakośaḥ purīm hitvā palāyanaparaḥ abhavat
22. Then, O king, Divodāsa, the ruler, with his warriors slain and his treasury exhausted, abandoned his capital city and became intent on flight.
स त्वाश्रममुपागम्य भरद्वाजस्य धीमतः ।
जगाम शरणं राजा कृताञ्जलिररिंदम ॥२३॥
23. sa tvāśramamupāgamya bharadvājasya dhīmataḥ ,
jagāma śaraṇaṁ rājā kṛtāñjalirariṁdama.
23. sa tu āśramam upāgamya bharadvājasya dhīmataḥ
jagāma śaraṇam rājā kṛtāñjaliḥ ariṃdama
23. tu ariṃdama sa rājā dhīmataḥ bharadvājasya
āśramam upāgamya kṛtāñjaliḥ śaraṇam jagāma
23. Then, having approached the hermitage (āśrama) of the wise Bharadvāja, that king, with folded hands, sought refuge (śaraṇa) there, O subduer of enemies.
राजोवाच ।
भगवन्वैतहव्यैर्मे युद्धे वंशः प्रणाशितः ।
अहमेकः परिद्यूनो भवन्तं शरणं गतः ॥२४॥
24. rājovāca ,
bhagavanvaitahavyairme yuddhe vaṁśaḥ praṇāśitaḥ ,
ahamekaḥ paridyūno bhavantaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ.
24. rājā uvāca bhagavan vaitahavyaiḥ me yuddhe vaṃśaḥ
praṇāśitaḥ aham ekaḥ paridyūnaḥ bhavantam śaraṇam gataḥ
24. rājā uvāca bhagavan vaitahavyaiḥ me vaṃśaḥ yuddhe
praṇāśitaḥ aham ekaḥ paridyūnaḥ bhavantam śaraṇam gataḥ
24. The king said: "O venerable one, my lineage was destroyed in battle by the Vitahavyas. I, alone and greatly distressed, have come to you for refuge."
शिष्यस्नेहेन भगवन्स मां रक्षितुमर्हसि ।
निःशेषो हि कृतो वंशो मम तैः पापकर्मभिः ॥२५॥
25. śiṣyasnehena bhagavansa māṁ rakṣitumarhasi ,
niḥśeṣo hi kṛto vaṁśo mama taiḥ pāpakarmabhiḥ.
25. śiṣyasnehena bhagavan saḥ mām rakṣitum arhasi
niḥśeṣaḥ hi kṛtaḥ vaṃśaḥ mama taiḥ pāpakarmabhiḥ
25. bhagavan śiṣyasnehena saḥ mām rakṣitum arhasi hi
taiḥ pāpakarmabhiḥ mama vaṃśaḥ niḥśeṣaḥ kṛtaḥ
25. O venerable one, you ought to protect me out of affection for your disciple. Indeed, my lineage has been utterly destroyed by those evil-doers.
तमुवाच महाभागो भरद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ।
न भेतव्यं न भेतव्यं सौदेव व्येतु ते भयम् ॥२६॥
26. tamuvāca mahābhāgo bharadvājaḥ pratāpavān ,
na bhetavyaṁ na bhetavyaṁ saudeva vyetu te bhayam.
26. tam uvāca mahābhāgaḥ bharadvājaḥ pratāpavān na
bhetavyam na bhetavyam saudeva vyetu te bhayam
26. mahābhāgaḥ pratāpavān bharadvājaḥ tam uvāca
saudeva na bhetavyam na bhetavyam te bhayam vyetu
26. The greatly revered and mighty Bharadvaja said to him: "Fear not, fear not, O Saudeva. Let your fear depart!"
अहमिष्टिं करोम्यद्य पुत्रार्थं ते विशां पते ।
वैतहव्यसहस्राणि यथा त्वं प्रसहिष्यसि ॥२७॥
27. ahamiṣṭiṁ karomyadya putrārthaṁ te viśāṁ pate ,
vaitahavyasahasrāṇi yathā tvaṁ prasahiṣyasi.
27. aham iṣṭim karomi adya putrārtham te viśām pate
vaitahavyasahastrāṇi yathā tvam prasahiṣyasi
27. viśām pate aham adya te putrārtham iṣṭim karomi
yathā tvam vaitahavyasahastrāṇi prasahiṣyasi
27. O lord of the people, today I will perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) for you, for the sake of a son, so that you may overpower thousands of Vitahavyas.
तत इष्टिं चकारर्षिस्तस्य वै पुत्रकामिकीम् ।
अथास्य तनयो जज्ञे प्रतर्दन इति श्रुतः ॥२८॥
28. tata iṣṭiṁ cakārarṣistasya vai putrakāmikīm ,
athāsya tanayo jajñe pratardana iti śrutaḥ.
28. tataḥ iṣṭim cakāra ṛṣiḥ tasya vai putrakāmikīm
atha asya tanayaḥ jajñe pratardanaḥ iti śrutaḥ
28. tataḥ ṛṣiḥ tasya putrakāmikīm iṣṭim cakāra
atha asya tanayaḥ pratardanaḥ iti śrutaḥ jajñe
28. Then, the sage performed a Vedic ritual (iṣṭi) for him, desiring a son. Subsequently, his son, known as Pratardana, was born.
स जातमात्रो ववृधे समाः सद्यस्त्रयोदश ।
वेदं चाधिजगे कृत्स्नं धनुर्वेदं च भारत ॥२९॥
29. sa jātamātro vavṛdhe samāḥ sadyastrayodaśa ,
vedaṁ cādhijage kṛtsnaṁ dhanurvedaṁ ca bhārata.
29. saḥ jātamātraḥ vavṛdhe samāḥ sadyaḥ trayodaśa
vedam ca adhijage kṛtsnam dhanurvedam ca bhārata
29. saḥ jātamātraḥ sadyaḥ trayodaśa samāḥ vavṛdhe bhārata,
kṛtsnam vedam ca kṛtsnam dhanurvedam ca adhijage
29. Immediately upon birth, he attained the growth equivalent to thirteen years. And, O Bhārata, he mastered the entire Veda and the science of archery (dhanurveda).
योगेन च समाविष्टो भरद्वाजेन धीमता ।
तेजो लौक्यं स संगृह्य तस्मिन्देशे समाविशत् ॥३०॥
30. yogena ca samāviṣṭo bharadvājena dhīmatā ,
tejo laukyaṁ sa saṁgṛhya tasmindeśe samāviśat.
30. yogena ca samāviṣṭaḥ bharadvājena dhīmatā tejaḥ
laukyam saḥ saṃgṛhya tasmin deśe samāviśat
30. ca saḥ dhīmatā bharadvājena yogena samāviṣṭaḥ
saḥ laukyam tejaḥ saṃgṛhya tasmin deśe samāviśat
30. And he was endowed with mystical power (yoga) by the wise Bhāradvāja. Having acquired worldly splendor, he then settled in that region.
ततः स कवची धन्वी बाणी दीप्त इवानलः ।
प्रययौ स धनुर्धुन्वन्विवर्षुरिव तोयदः ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ sa kavacī dhanvī bāṇī dīpta ivānalaḥ ,
prayayau sa dhanurdhunvanvivarṣuriva toyadaḥ.

31. Then, he, armored, bearing a bow and arrows, shone like blazing fire. He set forth, shaking his bow, like a rain-cloud poised to shower.
तं दृष्ट्वा परमं हर्षं सुदेवतनयो ययौ ।
मेने च मनसा दग्धान्वैतहव्यान्स पार्थिवः ॥३२॥
32. taṁ dṛṣṭvā paramaṁ harṣaṁ sudevatanayo yayau ,
mene ca manasā dagdhānvaitahavyānsa pārthivaḥ.
32. tam dṛṣṭvā paramam harṣam sudevatanayaḥ yayau
mene ca manasā dagdhān vaitahavyān saḥ pārthivaḥ
32. Upon seeing him, Sudeva's son experienced immense joy. That king mentally regarded the Vaitahavyas as already vanquished.
ततस्तं यौवराज्येन स्थापयित्वा प्रतर्दनम् ।
कृतकृत्यं तदात्मानं स राजा अभ्यनन्दत ॥३३॥
33. tatastaṁ yauvarājyena sthāpayitvā pratardanam ,
kṛtakṛtyaṁ tadātmānaṁ sa rājā abhyanandata.
33. tataḥ tam yauvarājyena sthāpayitvā pratardanam
kṛtakṛtyam tad ātmanam saḥ rājā abhyanandata
33. Then, having installed Pratardana as the crown prince, that king felt satisfied, deeming himself to have fulfilled his duty.
ततस्तु वैतहव्यानां वधाय स महीपतिः ।
पुत्रं प्रस्थापयामास प्रतर्दनमरिंदमम् ॥३४॥
34. tatastu vaitahavyānāṁ vadhāya sa mahīpatiḥ ,
putraṁ prasthāpayāmāsa pratardanamariṁdamam.
34. tataḥ tu vaitahavyānām vadhāya saḥ mahīpatiḥ
putram prasthāpayāmāsa pratardanam arimdamam
34. Then, that lord of the earth sent forth his son Pratardana, the subduer of enemies, for the destruction of the Vaitahavyas.
सरथः स तु संतीर्य गङ्गामाशु पराक्रमी ।
प्रययौ वीतहव्यानां पुरीं परपुरंजयः ॥३५॥
35. sarathaḥ sa tu saṁtīrya gaṅgāmāśu parākramī ,
prayayau vītahavyānāṁ purīṁ parapuraṁjayaḥ.

35. But that mighty hero, the conqueror of enemy cities, swiftly crossed the Gaṅgā with his chariot and proceeded to the city of the Vītahavyas.
वैतहव्यास्तु संश्रुत्य रथघोषं समुद्धतम् ।
निर्ययुर्नगराकारै रथैः पररथारुजैः ॥३६॥
36. vaitahavyāstu saṁśrutya rathaghoṣaṁ samuddhatam ,
niryayurnagarākārai rathaiḥ pararathārujaiḥ.

36. Upon hearing the mighty roar of chariots, the Vaitahavyas advanced with their city-like chariots, which were capable of crushing enemy chariots.
निष्क्रम्य ते नरव्याघ्रा दंशिताश्चित्रयोधिनः ।
प्रतर्दनं समाजघ्नुः शरवर्षैरुदायुधाः ॥३७॥
37. niṣkramya te naravyāghrā daṁśitāścitrayodhinaḥ ,
pratardanaṁ samājaghnuḥ śaravarṣairudāyudhāḥ.
37. niṣkramya te naravyāghrāḥ daṃśitāḥ citrayodhinaḥ
pratardanam samājaghnuḥ śaravarṣaiḥ udāyudhāḥ
37. Those tiger-like men, armored and fighting skillfully, sallied forth and attacked Pratardana with showers of arrows, their weapons raised.
अस्त्रैश्च विविधाकारै रथौघैश्च युधिष्ठिर ।
अभ्यवर्षन्त राजानं हिमवन्तमिवाम्बुदाः ॥३८॥
38. astraiśca vividhākārai rathaughaiśca yudhiṣṭhira ,
abhyavarṣanta rājānaṁ himavantamivāmbudāḥ.

38. O Yudhishthira, they rained upon the king with diverse weapons and numerous chariots, just as clouds shower upon the Himālaya mountains.
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य तेषां राजा प्रतर्दनः ।
जघान तान्महातेजा वज्रानलसमैः शरैः ॥३९॥
39. astrairastrāṇi saṁvārya teṣāṁ rājā pratardanaḥ ,
jaghāna tānmahātejā vajrānalasamaiḥ śaraiḥ.

39. Having parried their weapons with his own, King Pratardana, who was greatly mighty, then struck them down with arrows comparable to lightning and fire.
कृत्तोत्तमाङ्गास्ते राजन्भल्लैः शतसहस्रशः ।
अपतन्रुधिरार्द्राङ्गा निकृत्ता इव किंशुकाः ॥४०॥
40. kṛttottamāṅgāste rājanbhallaiḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ,
apatanrudhirārdrāṅgā nikṛttā iva kiṁśukāḥ.
40. kṛttottamāṅgāḥ te rājan bhallaiḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
apatan rudhirārdrāṅgāḥ nikṛttāḥ iva kiṃśukāḥ

40. O King, with their heads severed by hundreds of thousands of spears, they fell, their bodies drenched in blood, like cut-down palāśa trees.
हतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु वीतहव्यः सुतेष्वथ ।
प्राद्रवन्नगरं हित्वा भृगोराश्रममप्युत ॥४१॥
41. hateṣu teṣu sarveṣu vītahavyaḥ suteṣvatha ,
prādravannagaraṁ hitvā bhṛgorāśramamapyuta.

41. Then, after all those, including his sons, were slain, Vītahavya abandoned his city and fled to the hermitage (āśrama) of Bhṛgu.
ययौ भृगुं च शरणं वीतहव्यो नराधिपः ।
अभयं च ददौ तस्मै राज्ञे राजन्भृगुस्तथा ।
ततो ददावासनं च तस्मै शिष्यो भृगोस्तदा ॥४२॥
42. yayau bhṛguṁ ca śaraṇaṁ vītahavyo narādhipaḥ ,
abhayaṁ ca dadau tasmai rājñe rājanbhṛgustathā ,
tato dadāvāsanaṁ ca tasmai śiṣyo bhṛgostadā.

bhṛgoḥ śiṣyaḥ ca tasmai āsanaṃ dadau
42. And King Vītahavya went to Bhṛgu for refuge. Then, O King, Bhṛgu granted that king safety. Subsequently, a disciple of Bhṛgu also offered him a seat.
अथानुपदमेवाशु तत्रागच्छत्प्रतर्दनः ।
स प्राप्य चाश्रमपदं दिवोदासात्मजोऽब्रवीत् ॥४३॥
43. athānupadamevāśu tatrāgacchatpratardanaḥ ,
sa prāpya cāśramapadaṁ divodāsātmajo'bravīt.

saḥ prāpya ca āśramapadaṃ divodāsātmajaḥ abravīt

43. Then, quickly and immediately following, Pratardana arrived there. And having reached the hermitage (āśrama), he, the son of Divodāsa, spoke.
भो भोः केऽत्राश्रमे सन्ति भृगोः शिष्या महात्मनः ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छे मुनिमहं तस्याचक्षत मामिति ॥४४॥
44. bho bhoḥ ke'trāśrame santi bhṛgoḥ śiṣyā mahātmanaḥ ,
draṣṭumicche munimahaṁ tasyācakṣata māmiti.

draṣṭum icche munim aham tasya ācakṣata mām iti

44. Oh, oh! Who are the disciples of the great (muni) Bhṛgu here in the hermitage? I wish to see the sage (muni); please inform him of my presence.
स तं विदित्वा तु भृगुर्निश्चक्रामाश्रमात्तदा ।
पूजयामास च ततो विधिना परमेण ह ॥४५॥
45. sa taṁ viditvā tu bhṛgurniścakrāmāśramāttadā ,
pūjayāmāsa ca tato vidhinā parameṇa ha.

tadā pūjayām āsa ca tataḥ vidhinā parameṇa ha

45. Having recognized him, Bhṛgu then came out of the hermitage and indeed honored him with the utmost ritual procedure.
उवाच चैनं राजेन्द्र किं कार्यमिति पार्थिवम् ।
स चोवाच नृपस्तस्मै यदागमनकारणम् ॥४६॥
46. uvāca cainaṁ rājendra kiṁ kāryamiti pārthivam ,
sa covāca nṛpastasmai yadāgamanakāraṇam.
46. uvāca ca enam rājendra kim kāryam iti pārthivam
saḥ ca uvāca nṛpaḥ tasmai yat āgamana kāraṇam

46. And he (Bhṛgu) addressed the king, saying, 'O ruler of kings, what is your purpose?' And the king in turn informed him of the reason for his arrival.
अयं ब्रह्मन्नितो राजा वीतहव्यो विसर्ज्यताम् ।
अस्य पुत्रैर्हि मे ब्रह्मन्कृत्स्नो वंशः प्रणाशितः ।
उत्सादितश्च विषयः काशीनां रत्नसंचयः ॥४७॥
47. ayaṁ brahmannito rājā vītahavyo visarjyatām ,
asya putrairhi me brahmankṛtsno vaṁśaḥ praṇāśitaḥ ,
utsāditaśca viṣayaḥ kāśīnāṁ ratnasaṁcayaḥ.
47. ayam brahman itaḥ rājā vītahavyaḥ
visarjyatām asya putraiḥ hi me brahman
kṛtsnaḥ vaṃśaḥ praṇāśitaḥ utsāditaḥ
ca viṣayaḥ kāśīnām ratnasaṃcayaḥ

visarjyatām hi brahman asya putraiḥ
me kṛtsnaḥ vaṃśaḥ praṇāśitaḥ ca
kāśīnām viṣayaḥ ratnasaṃcayaḥ utsāditaḥ
47. O (brahmin), this King Vītahavya should be sent away from here! Indeed, by his sons, my entire lineage has been destroyed, O (brahmin), and the territory of the Kāśis, along with its treasury of jewels, has been ravaged.
एतस्य वीर्यदृप्तस्य हतं पुत्रशतं मया ।
अस्येदानीं वधाद्ब्रह्मन्भविष्याम्यनृणः पितुः ॥४८॥
48. etasya vīryadṛptasya hataṁ putraśataṁ mayā ,
asyedānīṁ vadhādbrahmanbhaviṣyāmyanṛṇaḥ pituḥ.
48. etasya vīryadṛptasya hatam putraśatam mayā asya
idānīm vadhāt brahman bhaviṣyāmi anṛṇaḥ pituḥ
48. I have killed a hundred sons of this one, who was arrogant with valor. Now, by slaying him, O brahmin, I shall become free from my father's debt.
तमुवाच कृपाविष्टो भृगुर्धर्मभृतां वरः ।
नेहास्ति क्षत्रियः कश्चित्सर्वे हीमे द्विजातयः ॥४९॥
49. tamuvāca kṛpāviṣṭo bhṛgurdharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
nehāsti kṣatriyaḥ kaścitsarve hīme dvijātayaḥ.
49. tam uvāca kṛpāviṣṭaḥ bhṛguḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ na
iha asti kṣatriyaḥ kaścit sarve hi ime dvijātayaḥ
49. Bhṛgu, the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma), filled with compassion, said to him: "There is no kshatriya here; indeed, all these are brahmins."
एवं तु वचनं श्रुत्वा भृगोस्तथ्यं प्रतर्दनः ।
पादावुपस्पृश्य शनैः प्रहसन्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥५०॥
50. evaṁ tu vacanaṁ śrutvā bhṛgostathyaṁ pratardanaḥ ,
pādāvupaspṛśya śanaiḥ prahasanvākyamabravīt.
50. evam tu vacanam śrutvā bhṛgoḥ tathyam pratardanaḥ
pādau upaspṛśya śanaiḥ prahasan vākyam abravīt
50. Having heard these true words of Bhṛgu, Pratardana gently touched his feet and spoke, smiling.
एवमप्यस्मि भगवन्कृतकृत्यो न संशयः ।
यदेष राजा वीर्येण स्वजातिं त्याजितो मया ॥५१॥
51. evamapyasmi bhagavankṛtakṛtyo na saṁśayaḥ ,
yadeṣa rājā vīryeṇa svajātiṁ tyājito mayā.
51. evam api asmi bhagavan kṛtakṛtyaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
yat eṣaḥ rājā vīryeṇa svajātim tyājitaḥ mayā
51. Even in this situation, O venerable one, I am content. There is no doubt that this king has been made to abandon his own class by my valor.
अनुजानीहि मां ब्रह्मन्ध्यायस्व च शिवेन माम् ।
त्याजितो हि मया जातिमेष राजा भृगूद्वह ॥५२॥
52. anujānīhi māṁ brahmandhyāyasva ca śivena mām ,
tyājito hi mayā jātimeṣa rājā bhṛgūdvaha.
52. anujānīhi mām brahman dhyāyasva ca śivena mām
tyājitaḥ hi mayā jātim eṣaḥ rājā bhṛgūdvaha
52. brahman bhṛgūdvaha mām anujānīhi ca mām śivena
dhyāyasva hi mayā eṣaḥ rājā jātim tyājitaḥ
52. O brahmin (brahman), grant me permission and remember me auspiciously, for indeed, I have caused this king, O foremost among the Bhrigus, to forsake his social status (jāti).
ततस्तेनाभ्यनुज्ञातो ययौ राजा प्रतर्दनः ।
यथागतं महाराज मुक्त्वा विषमिवोरगः ॥५३॥
53. tatastenābhyanujñāto yayau rājā pratardanaḥ ,
yathāgataṁ mahārāja muktvā viṣamivoragaḥ.
53. tataḥ tena abhyanujñātaḥ yayau rājā pratardanaḥ
yathāgatam mahārāja muktvā viṣam iva uragaḥ
53. mahārāja tataḥ tena abhyanujñātaḥ rājā pratardanaḥ
yathāgatam uragaḥ viṣam iva muktvā yayau
53. Then, permitted by him, King Pratardana departed, O great king, just as he had come, having cast off (his burden) like a serpent sheds its venom.
भृगोर्वचनमात्रेण स च ब्रह्मर्षितां गतः ।
वीतहव्यो महाराज ब्रह्मवादित्वमेव च ॥५४॥
54. bhṛgorvacanamātreṇa sa ca brahmarṣitāṁ gataḥ ,
vītahavyo mahārāja brahmavāditvameva ca.
54. bhṛgoḥ vacanamātreṇa saḥ ca brahmarṣitām gataḥ
vītahavyaḥ mahārāja brahmavāditvam eva ca
54. mahārāja ca bhṛgoḥ vacanamātreṇa saḥ vītahavyaḥ

54. And by merely the word of Bhrigu, that Vītahavya, O great king, attained the status of a brahmin-sage (brahmarṣi) and also became a knower of (brahman) (brahmavāditva).
तस्य गृत्समदः पुत्रो रूपेणेन्द्र इवापरः ।
शक्रस्त्वमिति यो दैत्यैर्निगृहीतः किलाभवत् ॥५५॥
55. tasya gṛtsamadaḥ putro rūpeṇendra ivāparaḥ ,
śakrastvamiti yo daityairnigṛhītaḥ kilābhavat.
55. tasya gṛtsamadaḥ putraḥ rūpeṇa indraḥ iva aparaḥ
śakraḥ tvam iti yaḥ daityaiḥ nigṛhītaḥ kila abhavat
55. tasya putraḥ gṛtsamadaḥ rūpeṇa aparaḥ iva indraḥ
yaḥ daityaiḥ tvam śakraḥ iti nigṛhītaḥ kila abhavat
55. His son was Gṛtsamada, who was, in appearance, like another Indra. It is said that he was captured by the Daityas (demons), who exclaimed, 'You are Indra!'
ऋग्वेदे वर्तते चाग्र्या श्रुतिरत्र विशां पते ।
यत्र गृत्समदो ब्रह्मन्ब्राह्मणैः स महीयते ॥५६॥
56. ṛgvede vartate cāgryā śrutiratra viśāṁ pate ,
yatra gṛtsamado brahmanbrāhmaṇaiḥ sa mahīyate.

56. O lord of the people, a foremost Vedic revelation (śruti) exists here in the Ṛgveda, where Gṛtsamada is honored by Brahmins, O Brahmin (brahman).
स ब्रह्मचारी विप्रर्षिः श्रीमान्गृत्समदोऽभवत् ।
पुत्रो गृत्समदस्यापि सुचेता अभवद्द्विजः ॥५७॥
57. sa brahmacārī viprarṣiḥ śrīmāngṛtsamado'bhavat ,
putro gṛtsamadasyāpi sucetā abhavaddvijaḥ.
57. saḥ brahmacārī viprarṣiḥ śrīmān gṛtsamadaḥ abhavat
putraḥ gṛtsamadasya api sucetāḥ abhavat dvijaḥ
57. saḥ śrīmān viprarṣiḥ gṛtsamadaḥ brahmacārī abhavat
api dvijaḥ sucetāḥ gṛtsamadasya putraḥ abhavat
57. That glorious Brahmin sage, Gṛtsamada, became a celibate student (brahmacārī). Also, Suceṭas, a Brahmin (dvija), became the son of Gṛtsamada.
वर्चाः सुतेजसः पुत्रो विहव्यस्तस्य चात्मजः ।
विहव्यस्य तु पुत्रस्तु वितत्यस्तस्य चात्मजः ॥५८॥
58. varcāḥ sutejasaḥ putro vihavyastasya cātmajaḥ ,
vihavyasya tu putrastu vitatyastasya cātmajaḥ.
58. varcāḥ sutejasaḥ putraḥ vihavyaḥ tasya ca ātmajaḥ
vihavyasya tu putraḥ tu vitatyaḥ tasya ca ātmajaḥ
58. sutejasaḥ putraḥ varcāḥ ca tasya ātmajaḥ vihavyaḥ
tu vihavyasya putraḥ tu vitatyaḥ ca tasya ātmajaḥ
58. Varcas was the son of Sutejas, and Vihavya was his (Varcas') son. Then, Vitatya was indeed the son of Vihavya, and he (Vitatya) also had a son.
वितत्यस्य सुतः सत्यः सन्तः सत्यस्य चात्मजः ।
श्रवास्तस्य सुतश्चर्षिः श्रवसश्चाभवत्तमः ॥५९॥
59. vitatyasya sutaḥ satyaḥ santaḥ satyasya cātmajaḥ ,
śravāstasya sutaścarṣiḥ śravasaścābhavattamaḥ.
59. vitatyasya sutaḥ satyaḥ santaḥ satyasya ca ātmajaḥ
śravāḥ tasya sutaḥ ca ṛṣiḥ śravasaḥ ca abhavat tamaḥ
59. vitatyasya sutaḥ satyaḥ ca satyasya ātmajaḥ santaḥ
ca tasya sutaḥ ṛṣiḥ śravāḥ ca śravasaḥ tamaḥ abhavat
59. Satya was the son of Vitatya. And Santa was the son of Satya. Then Śravas, who was also a sage, was the son of Santa. And Tamas became the son of Śravas.
तमसश्च प्रकाशोऽभूत्तनयो द्विजसत्तमः ।
प्रकाशस्य च वागिन्द्रो बभूव जयतां वरः ॥६०॥
60. tamasaśca prakāśo'bhūttanayo dvijasattamaḥ ,
prakāśasya ca vāgindro babhūva jayatāṁ varaḥ.
60. tamasaḥ ca prakāśaḥ abhūt tanayaḥ dvijasattamaḥ
| prakāśasya ca vāgindraḥ babhūva jayatām varaḥ
60. dvijasattamaḥ tamasaḥ ca prakāśaḥ tanayaḥ abhūt
prakāśasya ca vāgindraḥ jayatām varaḥ babhūva
60. From Tamas, Prakasha was born as his son, O foremost among brahmins. And from Prakasha, Vagindra, the best among conquerors, came into being.
तस्यात्मजश्च प्रमतिर्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ।
घृताच्यां तस्य पुत्रस्तु रुरुर्नामोदपद्यत ॥६१॥
61. tasyātmajaśca pramatirvedavedāṅgapāragaḥ ,
ghṛtācyāṁ tasya putrastu rururnāmodapadyata.
61. tasya ātmajaḥ ca pramatiḥ veda-vedāṅga-pāragaḥ |
ghṛtācyām tasya putraḥ tu ruruḥ nāma udapadyata
61. tasya ca ātmajaḥ pramatiḥ veda-vedāṅga-pāragaḥ
tasya tu ghṛtācyām ruruḥ nāma putraḥ udapadyata
61. And his son was Pramati, well-versed in the Vedas and Vedangas. From Ghritachi, his son named Ruru was born.
प्रमद्वरायां तु रुरोः पुत्रः समुदपद्यत ।
शुनको नाम विप्रर्षिर्यस्य पुत्रोऽथ शौनकः ॥६२॥
62. pramadvarāyāṁ tu ruroḥ putraḥ samudapadyata ,

62. From Pramadvara, Ruru's son, named Shunaka, a brahmin sage, was born. And then, Shaunaka was his (Shunaka's) son.
एवं विप्रत्वमगमद्वीतहव्यो नराधिपः ।
भृगोः प्रसादाद्राजेन्द्र क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥६३॥
