कथं शांतनवो भीष्मो दशमेऽहनि संजय ।
अयुध्यत महावीर्यैः पाण्डवैः सहसृञ्जयैः ॥१॥

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, how did Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, fight on the tenth day against the exceedingly powerful Pāṇḍavas along with the Sṛñjayas?
कुरवश्च कथं युद्धे पाण्डवान्प्रत्यवारयन् ।
आचक्ष्व मे महायुद्धं भीष्मस्याहवशोभिनः ॥२॥
2. kuravaśca kathaṁ yuddhe pāṇḍavānpratyavārayan ,
ācakṣva me mahāyuddhaṁ bhīṣmasyāhavaśobhinaḥ.

2. And how did the Kurus prevent the Pāṇḍavas in battle? Describe to me the great battle of Bhīṣma, who shone gloriously in combat.
संजय उवाच ।
कुरवः पाण्डवैः सार्धं यथायुध्यन्त भारत ।
यथा च तदभूद्युद्धं तत्ते वक्ष्यामि शृण्वतः ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
kuravaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ yathāyudhyanta bhārata ,
yathā ca tadabhūdyuddhaṁ tatte vakṣyāmi śṛṇvataḥ.

3. Sañjaya said: "O descendant of Bhārata (Dhritarashtra), listen, and I will narrate to you how the Kauravas fought with the Pandavas, and how that battle unfolded."
प्रेषिताः परलोकाय परमास्त्रैः किरीटिना ।
अहन्यहनि संप्राप्तास्तावकानां रथव्रजाः ॥४॥
4. preṣitāḥ paralokāya paramāstraiḥ kirīṭinā ,
ahanyahani saṁprāptāstāvakānāṁ rathavrajāḥ.

4. Day after day, your throngs of chariots, sent to the other world by Arjuna (kirīṭinā) with supreme weapons, met their end.
यथाप्रतिज्ञं कौरव्यः स चापि समितिंजयः ।
पार्थानामकरोद्भीष्मः सततं समितिक्षयम् ॥५॥
5. yathāpratijñaṁ kauravyaḥ sa cāpi samitiṁjayaḥ ,
pārthānāmakarodbhīṣmaḥ satataṁ samitikṣayam.

5. O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), that Bhishma, the conqueror in battle (samitiṃjaya), constantly caused the destruction of the Pandavas (Pārthānām) in battle, in accordance with his vow.
कुरुभिः सहितं भीष्मं युध्यमानं महारथम् ।
अर्जुनं च सपाञ्चाल्यं दृष्ट्वा संशयिता जनाः ॥६॥
6. kurubhiḥ sahitaṁ bhīṣmaṁ yudhyamānaṁ mahāratham ,
arjunaṁ ca sapāñcālyaṁ dṛṣṭvā saṁśayitā janāḥ.
6. kurubhiḥ sahitam bhīṣmam yudhyamānam mahāratham
arjunam ca sapāñcālyam dṛṣṭvā saṃśayitāḥ janāḥ

6. Seeing Bhishma, the great charioteer (mahāratha), fighting alongside the Kurus, and Arjuna along with the Panchalas, people became doubtful.
दशमेऽहनि तस्मिंस्तु भीष्मार्जुनसमागमे ।
अवर्तत महारौद्रः सततं समितिक्षयः ॥७॥
7. daśame'hani tasmiṁstu bhīṣmārjunasamāgame ,
avartata mahāraudraḥ satataṁ samitikṣayaḥ.

avartata mahāraudraḥ satatam samitikṣayaḥ

7. On that tenth day, during the confrontation between Bhishma and Arjuna, a terribly fierce destruction (samitikṣaya) in battle constantly took place.
तस्मिन्नयुतशो राजन्भूयश्च स परंतपः ।
भीष्मः शांतनवो योधाञ्जघान परमास्त्रवित् ॥८॥
8. tasminnayutaśo rājanbhūyaśca sa paraṁtapaḥ ,
bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo yodhāñjaghāna paramāstravit.
8. tasmin ayutaśaḥ rājan bhūyaḥ ca saḥ paraṃtapaḥ
bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ yodhān jaghāna paramāstravit

bhīṣmaḥ bhūyaḥ ca ayutaśaḥ yodhān jaghāna
8. O king, in that battle, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, who was a tormentor of foes and skilled in supreme weapons, further killed tens of thousands of warriors.
येषामज्ञातकल्पानि नामगोत्राणि पार्थिव ।
ते हतास्तत्र भीष्मेण शूराः सर्वेऽनिवर्तिनः ॥९॥
9. yeṣāmajñātakalpāni nāmagotrāṇi pārthiva ,
te hatāstatra bhīṣmeṇa śūrāḥ sarve'nivartinaḥ.
9. yeṣām ajñātakalpāni nāmagotrāṇi pārthiva te
hatāḥ tatra bhīṣmeṇa śūrāḥ sarve anivartinaḥ
9. pārthiva yeṣām nāmagotrāṇi ajñātakalpāni te

9. O king, there, by Bhishma, all those non-retreating heroes whose names and lineages were virtually unknown were killed.
दशाहानि ततस्तप्त्वा भीष्मः पाण्डववाहिनीम् ।
निरविद्यत धर्मात्मा जीवितेन परंतपः ॥१०॥
10. daśāhāni tatastaptvā bhīṣmaḥ pāṇḍavavāhinīm ,
niravidyata dharmātmā jīvitena paraṁtapaḥ.
10. daśāhāni tataḥ taptvā bhīṣmaḥ pāṇḍavavāhinīm
niravidyata dharmātmā jīvitena paraṃtapaḥ
10. tataḥ daśāhāni pāṇḍavavāhinīm taptvā paraṃtapaḥ

10. Then, having tormented the Pandava army for ten days, Bhishma, the tormentor of foes, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, became disgusted with life.
स क्षिप्रं वधमन्विच्छन्नात्मनोऽभिमुखं रणे ।
न हन्यां मानवश्रेष्ठान्संग्रामेऽभिमुखानिति ॥११॥
11. sa kṣipraṁ vadhamanvicchannātmano'bhimukhaṁ raṇe ,
na hanyāṁ mānavaśreṣṭhānsaṁgrāme'bhimukhāniti.
11. saḥ kṣipram vadham anvicchan ātmanaḥ abhimukham raṇe
na hanyām mānavapreṣṭhān saṃgrāme abhimukhān iti
11. saḥ rane ātmanaḥ vadham kṣipram anvicchan (avocat)
iti (yat) saṃgrāme abhimukhān mānavapreṣṭhān na hanyām
11. He, quickly desiring his own death (ātman) while facing the battle, (thought): 'I should not kill the best of men who are confronting me in battle.'
चिन्तयित्वा महाबाहुः पिता देवव्रतस्तव ।
अभ्याशस्थं महाराज पाण्डवं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. cintayitvā mahābāhuḥ pitā devavratastava ,
abhyāśasthaṁ mahārāja pāṇḍavaṁ vākyamabravīt.
12. cintayitvā mahābāhuḥ pitā devavrataḥ tava
abhyāśastham mahārāja pāṇḍavam vākyam abravīt
12. mahārāja tava mahābāhuḥ pitā devavrataḥ

12. O great king, your mighty-armed father Devavrata, having pondered, spoke these words to the Pāṇḍava (Yudhishthira) who was standing nearby.
युधिष्ठिर महाप्राज्ञ सर्वशास्त्रविशारद ।
शृणु मे वचनं तात धर्म्यं स्वर्ग्यं च जल्पतः ॥१३॥
13. yudhiṣṭhira mahāprājña sarvaśāstraviśārada ,
śṛṇu me vacanaṁ tāta dharmyaṁ svargyaṁ ca jalpataḥ.
13. yudhiṣṭhira mahāprājña sarvaśāstraviśārada śṛṇu
me vacanam tāta dharmyam svargyam ca jalpataḥ
13. tāta yudhiṣṭhira mahāprājña sarvaśāstraviśārada,
jalpataḥ me dharmyam ca svargyam vacanam śṛṇu
13. O Yudhishthira, greatly wise and expert in all scriptures, listen, my dear son (tāta), to my words, which speak of righteousness (dharma) and lead to heaven.
निर्विण्णोऽस्मि भृशं तात देहेनानेन भारत ।
घ्नतश्च मे गतः कालः सुबहून्प्राणिनो रणे ॥१४॥
14. nirviṇṇo'smi bhṛśaṁ tāta dehenānena bhārata ,
ghnataśca me gataḥ kālaḥ subahūnprāṇino raṇe.
14. nirviṇṇaḥ asmi bhṛśam tāta dehena anena bhārata
ghnataḥ ca me gataḥ kālaḥ subahūn prāṇinaḥ raṇe
14. tāta bhārata,
anena dehena bhṛśam nirviṇṇaḥ asmi.
ca me ghnataḥ subahūn prāṇinaḥ raṇe kālaḥ gataḥ.
14. O dear Yudhishthira (tāta), O descendant of Bharata, I am utterly weary of this body. My life (kāla) has been spent killing countless beings in battle.
तस्मात्पार्थं पुरोधाय पाञ्चालान्सृञ्जयांस्तथा ।
मद्वधे क्रियतां यत्नो मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥१५॥
15. tasmātpārthaṁ purodhāya pāñcālānsṛñjayāṁstathā ,
madvadhe kriyatāṁ yatno mama cedicchasi priyam.
15. tasmāt pārtham purodhāya pāñcālān sṛñjayān tathā
madvadhe kriyatām yatnaḥ mama cet icchasi priyam
15. tasmāt,
cet mama priyam icchasi,
pārtham pāñcālān tathā sṛñjayān purodhāya madvadhe yatnaḥ kriyatām.
15. Therefore, if you desire what is pleasing to me, let an effort be made for my slaying, with Arjuna (Pārtha), the Pāñcālas, and the Sṛñjayas leading the charge.
तस्य तन्मतमाज्ञाय पाण्डवः सत्यदर्शनः ।
भीष्मं प्रतिययौ यत्तः संग्रामे सह सृञ्जयैः ॥१६॥
16. tasya tanmatamājñāya pāṇḍavaḥ satyadarśanaḥ ,
bhīṣmaṁ pratiyayau yattaḥ saṁgrāme saha sṛñjayaiḥ.
16. tasya tat matam ājñāya pāṇḍavaḥ satyadarśanaḥ
bhīṣmam pratiyayau yattaḥ saṃgrāme saha sṛñjayaiḥ
16. satyadarśanaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ tasya tat matam ājñāya,
yattaḥ,
saṃgrāme sṛñjayaiḥ saha bhīṣmam pratiyayau.
16. Having understood his true intention, the truthful (satyadarśana) Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), diligent and prepared, advanced towards Bhīṣma in battle with the Sañjayas.
धृष्टद्युम्नस्ततो राजन्पाण्डवश्च युधिष्ठिरः ।
श्रुत्वा भीष्मस्य तां वाचं चोदयामासतुर्बलम् ॥१७॥
17. dhṛṣṭadyumnastato rājanpāṇḍavaśca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
śrutvā bhīṣmasya tāṁ vācaṁ codayāmāsaturbalam.
17. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ tataḥ rājan pāṇḍavaḥ ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
śrutvā bhīṣmasya tām vācam codayāmāsatuḥ balam
17. rājan,
tataḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhīṣmasya tām vācam śrutvā balam codayāmāsatuḥ.
17. O King, then Dhṛṣṭadyumna and the Pāṇḍava Yudhishthira, having heard that speech of Bhīṣma, both urged their army forward.
अभिद्रवत युध्यध्वं भीष्मं जयत संयुगे ।
रक्षिताः सत्यसंधेन जिष्णुना रिपुजिष्णुना ॥१८॥
18. abhidravata yudhyadhvaṁ bhīṣmaṁ jayata saṁyuge ,
rakṣitāḥ satyasaṁdhena jiṣṇunā ripujiṣṇunā.
18. abhidravata yudhyadhvam bhīṣmam jayata saṃyuge
rakṣitāḥ satyasaṃdhena jiṣṇunā ripujiṣṇunā
18. saṃyuge bhīṣmam abhidravata,
yudhyadhvam,
jayata! (yūyam) satyasaṃdhena jiṣṇunā ripujiṣṇunā rakṣitāḥ (stha).
18. Attack! Fight! Conquer Bhīṣma in battle! You are protected by the truthful (satyasaṃdha) and victorious (jiṣṇu) Arjuna, the vanquisher of foes (ripujiṣṇu).
अयं चापि महेष्वासः पार्षतो वाहिनीपतिः ।
भीमसेनश्च समरे पालयिष्यति वो ध्रुवम् ॥१९॥
19. ayaṁ cāpi maheṣvāsaḥ pārṣato vāhinīpatiḥ ,
bhīmasenaśca samare pālayiṣyati vo dhruvam.
19. ayam ca api maheṣvāsaḥ pārṣataḥ vāhinīpatiḥ
bhīmasenaḥ ca samare pālayiṣyati vaḥ dhruvam
19. ca api ayam maheṣvāsaḥ pārṣataḥ vāhinīpatiḥ ca bhīmasenaḥ samare vaḥ dhruvam pālayiṣyati.
19. And this great archer (maheṣvāsa) Dhṛṣṭadyumna (pārṣata), the commander of the army (vāhinīpati), as well as Bhīmasena, will certainly protect you in battle.
न वै भीष्माद्भयं किंचित्कर्तव्यं युधि सृञ्जयाः ।
ध्रुवं भीष्मं विजेष्यामः पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् ॥२०॥
20. na vai bhīṣmādbhayaṁ kiṁcitkartavyaṁ yudhi sṛñjayāḥ ,
dhruvaṁ bhīṣmaṁ vijeṣyāmaḥ puraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinam.
20. na vai bhīṣmāt bhayam kiṃcit kartavyam yudhi sṛñjayāḥ
dhruvam bhīṣmam vijeṣyāmaḥ puraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinam
20. sṛñjayāḥ yudhi bhīṣmāt kiṃcit bhayam na vai kartavyam
śikhaṇḍinam puraskṛtya bhīṣmam dhruvam vijeṣyāmaḥ
20. O Sṛñjayas, there is certainly no need to fear Bhishma in battle. We will surely conquer Bhishma by placing Shikhandin at the forefront.
तथा तु समयं कृत्वा दशमेऽहनि पाण्डवाः ।
ब्रह्मलोकपरा भूत्वा संजग्मुः क्रोधमूर्छिताः ॥२१॥
21. tathā tu samayaṁ kṛtvā daśame'hani pāṇḍavāḥ ,
brahmalokaparā bhūtvā saṁjagmuḥ krodhamūrchitāḥ.
21. tathā tu samayam kṛtvā daśame ahani pāṇḍavāḥ
brahmalokaparā bhūtvā saṃjagmuḥ krodhamūrcchitāḥ
21. tathā tu pāṇḍavāḥ samayam kṛtvā daśame ahani
brahmalokaparā bhūtvā krodhamūrcchitāḥ saṃjagmuḥ
21. And so, having made that agreement, on the tenth day the Pāṇḍavas, intent on attaining the world of brahman (brahman), gathered, overcome with rage.
शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य पाण्डवं च धनंजयम् ।
भीष्मस्य पातने यत्नं परमं ते समास्थिताः ॥२२॥
22. śikhaṇḍinaṁ puraskṛtya pāṇḍavaṁ ca dhanaṁjayam ,
bhīṣmasya pātane yatnaṁ paramaṁ te samāsthitāḥ.
22. śikhaṇḍinam puraskṛtya pāṇḍavam ca dhanañjayam
bhīṣmasya pātane yatnam paramam te samāsthitāḥ
22. te śikhaṇḍinam ca pāṇḍavam dhanañjayam puraskṛtya
bhīṣmasya pātane paramam yatnam samāsthitāḥ
22. Placing Shikhandin and the Pāṇḍava Arjuna (Dhananjaya) at the forefront, they made the supreme effort for Bhishma's fall.
ततस्तव सुतादिष्टा नानाजनपदेश्वराः ।
द्रोणेन सहपुत्रेण सहसेना महाबलाः ॥२३॥
23. tatastava sutādiṣṭā nānājanapadeśvarāḥ ,
droṇena sahaputreṇa sahasenā mahābalāḥ.
23. tataḥ tava sutādiṣṭāḥ nānājanapadeśvarāḥ
droṇena sahaputreṇa sahasenā mahābalāḥ
23. tataḥ tava sutādiṣṭāḥ nānājanapadeśvarāḥ

23. Then, the mighty rulers of various countries, commanded by your sons, stood ready along with Droṇa, his son, and the army.
दुःशासनश्च बलवान्सह सर्वैः सहोदरैः ।
भीष्मं समरमध्यस्थं पालयां चक्रिरे तदा ॥२४॥
24. duḥśāsanaśca balavānsaha sarvaiḥ sahodaraiḥ ,
bhīṣmaṁ samaramadhyasthaṁ pālayāṁ cakrire tadā.
24. duḥśāsanaḥ ca balavān saha sarvaiḥ sahodaraiḥ
bhīṣmam samaramadhyastham pālayām cakrire tadā
24. tadā balavān duḥśāsanaḥ ca sarvaiḥ sahodaraiḥ
saha samaramadhyastham bhīṣmam pālayām cakrire
24. Then, the strong Duḥśāsana, along with all his brothers, protected Bhishma, who was positioned in the middle of the battle.
ततस्तु तावकाः शूराः पुरस्कृत्य यतव्रतम् ।
शिखण्डिप्रमुखान्पार्थान्योधयन्ति स्म संयुगे ॥२५॥
25. tatastu tāvakāḥ śūrāḥ puraskṛtya yatavratam ,
śikhaṇḍipramukhānpārthānyodhayanti sma saṁyuge.
25. tataḥ tu tāvakāḥ śūrāḥ puraskṛtya yatavratam
śikhaṇḍipramukhān pārthān yodhayanti sma saṃyuge
25. tataḥ tu tāvakāḥ śūrāḥ yatavratam puraskṛtya
śikhaṇḍipramukhān pārthān saṃyuge yodhayanti sma
25. Then, your valiant warriors, led by Bhishma, who had taken a firm vow, engaged in battle with the Pārthas, whose leader was Śikhaṇḍin.
चेदिभिश्च सपाञ्चालैः सहितो वानरध्वजः ।
ययौ शांतनवं भीष्मं पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् ॥२६॥
26. cedibhiśca sapāñcālaiḥ sahito vānaradhvajaḥ ,
yayau śāṁtanavaṁ bhīṣmaṁ puraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinam.
26. cedibhiḥ ca sapāñcālaiḥ sahitaḥ vānaradhvajaḥ
yayau śāntanavam bhīṣmam puraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinam
26. vānaradhvajaḥ cedibhiḥ ca sapāñcālaiḥ sahitaḥ
śikhaṇḍinam puraskṛtya śāntanavam bhīṣmam yayau
26. Arjuna, whose banner bore the monkey emblem, accompanied by the Cedis and the Pāñcālas, advanced towards Bhishma, the son of Śantanu, with Śikhaṇḍin leading the way.
द्रोणपुत्रं शिनेर्नप्ता धृष्टकेतुस्तु पौरवम् ।
युधामन्युः सहामात्यं दुर्योधनमयोधयत् ॥२७॥
27. droṇaputraṁ śinernaptā dhṛṣṭaketustu pauravam ,
yudhāmanyuḥ sahāmātyaṁ duryodhanamayodhayat.
27. droṇaputram śineḥ naptā dhṛṣṭaketuḥ tu pauravam
yudhāmanyuḥ sahāmātyam duryodhanam ayodhayat
27. śineḥ naptā droṇaputram ayodhayat dhṛṣṭaketuḥ tu pauravam

27. The grandson of Śini (Sātyaki) fought Drona's son (Aśvatthāmā). Dhṛṣṭaketu, however, fought the Paurava king. Yudhamanyu engaged Duryodhana along with his ministers.
विराटस्तु सहानीकः सहसेनं जयद्रथम् ।
वृद्धक्षत्रस्य दायादमाससाद परंतपः ॥२८॥
28. virāṭastu sahānīkaḥ sahasenaṁ jayadratham ,
vṛddhakṣatrasya dāyādamāsasāda paraṁtapaḥ.
28. virāṭaḥ tu sahānīkaḥ sahasenam jayadratham
vṛddhakṣatrasya dāyādam āsasāda paraṃtapaḥ

28. But Virāṭa, the scorcher of foes, along with his army, confronted Jayadratha, the heir of Vṛddhakṣatra, who was accompanied by his forces.
मद्रराजं महेष्वासं सहसैन्यं युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमसेनाभिगुप्तश्च नागानीकमुपाद्रवत् ॥२९॥
29. madrarājaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ sahasainyaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,

29. And Yudhiṣṭhira, protected by Bhīmasena, advanced towards the king of Madras, who was a great archer and accompanied by his army, as well as the elephant corps.
अप्रधृष्यमनावार्यं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
द्रोणं प्रति ययौ यत्तः पाञ्चाल्यः सह सोमकैः ॥३०॥
30. apradhṛṣyamanāvāryaṁ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
droṇaṁ prati yayau yattaḥ pāñcālyaḥ saha somakaiḥ.

30. The diligent Pāñcālya, along with the Somakas, advanced towards Droṇa, who was invincible, irresistible, and the foremost among all wielders of weapons.
कर्णिकारध्वजं चापि सिंहकेतुररिंदमः ।
प्रत्युज्जगाम सौभद्रं राजपुत्रो बृहद्बलः ॥३१॥
31. karṇikāradhvajaṁ cāpi siṁhaketurariṁdamaḥ ,
pratyujjagāma saubhadraṁ rājaputro bṛhadbalaḥ.

31. And indeed, the enemy-subduing prince Bṛhadbala, whose emblem was a lion, advanced to confront Saubhadra, who bore a karṇikāra flower on his banner.
शिखण्डिनं च पुत्रास्ते पाण्डवं च धनंजयम् ।
राजभिः समरे सार्धमभिपेतुर्जिघांसवः ॥३२॥
32. śikhaṇḍinaṁ ca putrāste pāṇḍavaṁ ca dhanaṁjayam ,
rājabhiḥ samare sārdhamabhipeturjighāṁsavaḥ.

32. Your sons, desiring to kill, attacked Shikhandin and Dhananjaya (Arjuna), the son of Pāṇḍu, accompanied by kings in battle.
तस्मिन्नतिमहाभीमे सेनयोर्वै पराक्रमे ।
संप्रधावत्स्वनीकेषु मेदिनी समकम्पत ॥३३॥
33. tasminnatimahābhīme senayorvai parākrame ,

33. Indeed, in that exceedingly dreadful exertion of the two armies, as the hosts rushed forth, the earth (medinī) trembled violently.

तावकानां परेषां च दृष्ट्वा शांतनवं रणे ॥३४॥
34. tānyanīkānyanīkeṣu samasajjanta bhārata ,
tāvakānāṁ pareṣāṁ ca dṛṣṭvā śāṁtanavaṁ raṇe.

34. O Bhārata, seeing Bhīṣma (Śāntanava) in battle, those armies of yours and of the enemies clashed with each other's hosts.
ततस्तेषां प्रयततामन्योन्यमभिधावताम् ।
प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दो दिक्षु सर्वासु भारत ॥३५॥
35. tatasteṣāṁ prayatatāmanyonyamabhidhāvatām ,
prādurāsīnmahāñśabdo dikṣu sarvāsu bhārata.

prādurāsīt mahān śabdaḥ dikṣu sarvāsu bhārata

35. Then, O Bhārata, as those striving and mutually rushing (warriors) attacked each other, a great sound arose in all directions.
शङ्खदुन्दुभिघोषैश्च वारणानां च बृंहितैः ।
सिंहनादैश्च सैन्यानां दारुणः समपद्यत ॥३६॥
36. śaṅkhadundubhighoṣaiśca vāraṇānāṁ ca bṛṁhitaiḥ ,
siṁhanādaiśca sainyānāṁ dāruṇaḥ samapadyata.

36. A dreadful sound arose from the blare of conchs and drums, the trumpeting of elephants, and the lion-like roars of the armies.
सा च सर्वनरेन्द्राणां चन्द्रार्कसदृशी प्रभा ।
वीराङ्गदकिरीटेषु निष्प्रभा समपद्यत ॥३७॥
37. sā ca sarvanarendrāṇāṁ candrārkasadṛśī prabhā ,
vīrāṅgadakirīṭeṣu niṣprabhā samapadyata.

37. And the splendor (prabhā) of all the kings, which was like the moon and the sun, became lusterless upon the armlets and crowns of the heroes.

धनुषां चैव निर्घोषो दारुणः समपद्यत ॥३८॥
38. rajomeghāśca saṁjajñuḥ śastravidyudbhirāvṛtāḥ ,
dhanuṣāṁ caiva nirghoṣo dāruṇaḥ samapadyata.

38. Dust clouds, enveloped by the lightning-like flash of weapons, arose, and a dreadful (dāruṇaḥ) twang of bows also resounded.
बाणशङ्खप्रणादाश्च भेरीणां च महास्वनाः ।
रथघोषश्च संजग्मुः सेनयोरुभयोरपि ॥३९॥
39. bāṇaśaṅkhapraṇādāśca bherīṇāṁ ca mahāsvanāḥ ,
rathaghoṣaśca saṁjagmuḥ senayorubhayorapi.

39. And the sounds of arrows and conchs, along with the great roars of drums (bherī), and the rumbling of chariots, all combined from both armies.
प्रासशक्त्यृष्टिसंघैश्च बाणौघैश्च समाकुलम् ।
निष्प्रकाशमिवाकाशं सेनयोः समपद्यत ॥४०॥
40. prāsaśaktyṛṣṭisaṁghaiśca bāṇaughaiśca samākulam ,
niṣprakāśamivākāśaṁ senayoḥ samapadyata.

40. The sky became as if devoid of light, covered with masses of spears, lances, and javelins, and with torrents of arrows from the two armies.
अन्योन्यं रथिनः पेतुर्वाजिनश्च महाहवे ।
कुञ्जराः कुञ्जराञ्जघ्नुः पदातींश्च पदातयः ॥४१॥
41. anyonyaṁ rathinaḥ peturvājinaśca mahāhave ,
kuñjarāḥ kuñjarāñjaghnuḥ padātīṁśca padātayaḥ.
41. anyonyam rathinaḥ petuḥ vājinaḥ ca mahāhave
kuñjarāḥ kuñjarān jaghnuḥ padātīn ca padātayaḥ
41. In the great battle, charioteers and horsemen fell upon each other. Elephants killed elephants, and foot-soldiers killed foot-soldiers.
तदासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं कुरूणां पाण्डवैः सह ।
भीष्महेतोर्नरव्याघ्र श्येनयोरामिषे यथा ॥४२॥
42. tadāsītsumahadyuddhaṁ kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
bhīṣmahetornaravyāghra śyenayorāmiṣe yathā.
42. tadā āsīt sumahat yuddham kurūṇām pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
bhīṣmahetoḥ naravyāghra śyenayoḥ āmiṣe yathā
42. Then, O tiger among men, there was a very great battle between the Kurus and the Pandavas for Bhishma's sake, just as two hawks fight over prey.
तयोः समागमो घोरो बभूव युधि भारत ।
अन्योन्यस्य वधार्थाय जिगीषूणां रणाजिरे ॥४३॥
43. tayoḥ samāgamo ghoro babhūva yudhi bhārata ,
anyonyasya vadhārthāya jigīṣūṇāṁ raṇājire.

43. O descendant of Bharata, a terrible encounter of those two (sides), who desired victory, took place on the battlefield for the purpose of killing each other.
