वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तदाज्ञाय हृषीकेशो विसृष्टं पापकर्मणा ।
हृष्यमाण इदं वाक्यं द्रौणिं प्रत्यब्रवीत्तदा ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tadājñāya hṛṣīkeśo visṛṣṭaṁ pāpakarmaṇā ,
hṛṣyamāṇa idaṁ vākyaṁ drauṇiṁ pratyabravīttadā.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said, "Then, Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa), having recognized that [weapon] which had been released by the evil-doer (Aśvatthāmā), spoke these words to the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāmā) while rejoicing."
विराटस्य सुतां पूर्वं स्नुषां गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
उपप्लव्यगतां दृष्ट्वा व्रतवान्ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. virāṭasya sutāṁ pūrvaṁ snuṣāṁ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
upaplavyagatāṁ dṛṣṭvā vratavānbrāhmaṇo'bravīt.

2. A vow-observing Brahmin, seeing Virata's daughter - who was formerly the daughter-in-law of the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Gāṇḍīvadhanvan) - having gone to Upaplavya, spoke.
परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु पुत्रस्तव जनिष्यति ।
एतदस्य परिक्षित्त्वं गर्भस्थस्य भविष्यति ॥३॥
3. parikṣīṇeṣu kuruṣu putrastava janiṣyati ,
etadasya parikṣittvaṁ garbhasthasya bhaviṣyati.

asya parikṣittvam garbhasthasya bhaviṣyati
3. kuruṣu parikṣīṇeṣu,

3. When the Kuru lineage is completely diminished, your son will be born. This state of being observed and protected (parikṣittvam) will be his even while he is in the womb.
तस्य तद्वचनं साधोः सत्यमेव भविष्यति ।
परिक्षिद्भविता ह्येषां पुनर्वंशकरः सुतः ॥४॥
4. tasya tadvacanaṁ sādhoḥ satyameva bhaviṣyati ,
parikṣidbhavitā hyeṣāṁ punarvaṁśakaraḥ sutaḥ.
4. tasya tat vacanam sādhoḥ satyam eva bhaviṣyati
parikṣit bhavitā hi eṣām punarvaṃśakaraḥ sutaḥ
4. sādhoḥ tat vacanam tasya satyam eva bhaviṣyati.
hi,
eṣām sutaḥ parikṣit bhavitā,
punarvaṃśakaraḥ.
4. That statement of the good man (sādhu) will indeed come true. This son will be Parikṣit, who will restore their lineage.
एवं ब्रुवाणं गोविन्दं सात्वतप्रवरं तदा ।
द्रौणिः परमसंरब्धः प्रत्युवाचेदमुत्तरम् ॥५॥
5. evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ govindaṁ sātvatapravaraṁ tadā ,
drauṇiḥ paramasaṁrabdhaḥ pratyuvācedamuttaram.
5. evam bruvāṇam govindam sātvatapravaram tadā
drauṇiḥ paramasaṃrabdhaḥ pratyuvāca idam uttaram
5. tadā,
drauṇiḥ,
paramasaṃrabdhaḥ,

5. Then Drauni, Droṇa's son, greatly enraged, spoke this reply to Govinda, the foremost among the Sātvatas, who was speaking thus.
नैतदेवं यथात्थ त्वं पक्षपातेन केशव ।
वचनं पुण्डरीकाक्ष न च मद्वाक्यमन्यथा ॥६॥
6. naitadevaṁ yathāttha tvaṁ pakṣapātena keśava ,
vacanaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣa na ca madvākyamanyathā.
6. na etat evam yathā āttha tvam pakṣapātena keśava
vacanam puṇḍarīkākṣa na ca mat vākyam anyathā
6. keśava puṇḍarīkākṣa tvam pakṣapātena yathā
āttha etat na evam ca mat vākyam anyathā na
6. O Keśava, lotus-eyed one (puṇḍarīkākṣa), this is not as you state, influenced by partiality. My word is not otherwise (not false).
पतिष्यत्येतदस्त्रं हि गर्भे तस्या मयोद्यतम् ।
विराटदुहितुः कृष्ण यां त्वं रक्षितुमिच्छसि ॥७॥
7. patiṣyatyetadastraṁ hi garbhe tasyā mayodyatam ,
virāṭaduhituḥ kṛṣṇa yāṁ tvaṁ rakṣitumicchasi.
7. patisyati etat astram hi garbhe tasyāḥ mayā udyatam
virāṭaduhituḥ kṛṣṇa yām tvam rakṣitum icchasi
7. kṛṣṇa yām tvam rakṣitum icchasi tasyāḥ virāṭaduhituḥ
garbhe mayā udyatam etat astram hi patiṣyati
7. O Krishna, this weapon, indeed, having been handled by me (in an attempt to stop it), will inevitably affect the womb of Virāṭa's daughter, whom you desire to protect.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
अमोघः परमास्त्रस्य पातस्तस्य भविष्यति ।
स तु गर्भो मृतो जातो दीर्घमायुरवाप्स्यति ॥८॥
8. vāsudeva uvāca ,
amoghaḥ paramāstrasya pātastasya bhaviṣyati ,
sa tu garbho mṛto jāto dīrghamāyuravāpsyati.
8. vāsudeva uvāca amoghaḥ paramāstrasya pātaḥ tasya bhaviṣyati
saḥ tu garbhaḥ mṛtaḥ jātaḥ dīrgham āyuḥ avāpsyati

tu saḥ garbhaḥ mṛtaḥ jātaḥ dīrgham āyuḥ avāpsyati
8. Vāsudeva said: "The impact (pāta) of that supreme weapon (paramāstra) will certainly be unfailing. But that fetus, though born dead, will attain a long life."
त्वां तु कापुरुषं पापं विदुः सर्वे मनीषिणः ।
असकृत्पापकर्माणं बालजीवितघातकम् ॥९॥
9. tvāṁ tu kāpuruṣaṁ pāpaṁ viduḥ sarve manīṣiṇaḥ ,
asakṛtpāpakarmāṇaṁ bālajīvitaghātakam.
9. tvām tu kāpuruṣam pāpam viduḥ sarve manīṣiṇaḥ
asakṛtpāpakarmāṇam bālajīvitaghātakam
9. tu sarve manīṣiṇaḥ tvām kāpuruṣam pāpam
asakṛtpāpakarmāṇam bālajīvitaghātakam viduḥ
9. But all thoughtful persons (manīṣiṇaḥ) know you to be a wicked (kāpuruṣa), sinful man, one whose actions are repeatedly evil, and a killer of children.
तस्मात्त्वमस्य पापस्य कर्मणः फलमाप्नुहि ।
त्रीणि वर्षसहस्राणि चरिष्यसि महीमिमाम् ।
अप्राप्नुवन्क्वचित्कांचित्संविदं जातु केनचित् ॥१०॥
10. tasmāttvamasya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalamāpnuhi ,
trīṇi varṣasahasrāṇi cariṣyasi mahīmimām ,
aprāpnuvankvacitkāṁcitsaṁvidaṁ jātu kenacit.
10. tasmāt tvam asya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ
phalam āpnuhi trīṇi varṣasahasrāṇi
cariṣyasi mahīm imām aprāpnuvan
kvacit kāṃcit saṃvidam jātu kenacit
10. tasmāt tvam asya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ
phalam āpnuhi trīṇi varṣasahasrāṇi
imām mahīm aprāpnuvan kvacit jātu
kenacit kāṃcit saṃvidam cariṣyasi
10. Therefore, you shall experience the consequence (phala) of this sinful act (karma). For three thousand years, you will wander this earth, never at any time finding any understanding or connection with anyone anywhere.
निर्जनानसहायस्त्वं देशान्प्रविचरिष्यसि ।
भवित्री न हि ते क्षुद्र जनमध्येषु संस्थितिः ॥११॥
11. nirjanānasahāyastvaṁ deśānpravicariṣyasi ,
bhavitrī na hi te kṣudra janamadhyeṣu saṁsthitiḥ.
11. nirjanānasahāyaḥ tvam deśān pravicariṣyasi
bhavitrī na hi te kṣudra janamadhyeṣu saṃsthitiḥ
11. nirjanānasahāyaḥ tvam deśān pravicariṣyasi he
kṣudra te janamadhyeṣu saṃsthitiḥ na hi bhavitrī
11. You will wander through desolate and friendless lands. Oh wretched one, there will certainly be no dwelling for you among people.
पूयशोणितगन्धी च दुर्गकान्तारसंश्रयः ।
विचरिष्यसि पापात्मन्सर्वव्याधिसमन्वितः ॥१२॥
12. pūyaśoṇitagandhī ca durgakāntārasaṁśrayaḥ ,
vicariṣyasi pāpātmansarvavyādhisamanvitaḥ.
12. pūyaśoṇitagandhī ca durgakāntārasaṃśrayaḥ
vicariṣyasi pāpātman sarvavyādhisamanvitaḥ
12. he pāpātman ca pūyaśoṇitagandhī durgakāntārasaṃśrayaḥ
sarvavyādhisamanvitaḥ vicariṣyasi
12. And, O evil-souled one (pāpātman), you will wander, smelling of pus and blood, dwelling in inaccessible forests, and afflicted with all diseases.
वयः प्राप्य परिक्षित्तु वेदव्रतमवाप्य च ।
कृपाच्छारद्वताद्वीरः सर्वास्त्राण्युपलप्स्यते ॥१३॥
13. vayaḥ prāpya parikṣittu vedavratamavāpya ca ,
kṛpācchāradvatādvīraḥ sarvāstrāṇyupalapsyate.
13. vayaḥ prāpya parikṣit tu vedavratam avāpya ca
kṛpāt śāradvatāt vīraḥ sarvāstrāṇi upalapsyate
13. tu parikṣit vayaḥ prāpya ca vedavratam avāpya
vīraḥ śāradvatāt kṛpāt sarvāstrāṇi upalapsyate
13. But Parikṣit, having reached maturity and having accomplished his Vedic vows, that hero will obtain all weapons from Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvan.
विदित्वा परमास्त्राणि क्षत्रधर्मव्रते स्थितः ।
षष्टिं वर्षाणि धर्मात्मा वसुधां पालयिष्यति ॥१४॥
14. viditvā paramāstrāṇi kṣatradharmavrate sthitaḥ ,
ṣaṣṭiṁ varṣāṇi dharmātmā vasudhāṁ pālayiṣyati.
14. viditvā paramāstrāṇi kṣatradharmavrate sthitaḥ
ṣaṣṭim varṣāṇi dharmātmā vasudhām pālayiṣyati
14. kṣatradharmavrate sthitaḥ paramāstrāṇi viditvā
dharmātmā ṣaṣṭim varṣāṇi vasudhām pālayiṣyati
14. Having understood the supreme weapons and being established in the vow of a warrior's intrinsic nature (kṣatradharma), the righteous soul (dharmātmā) will rule the earth for sixty years.
इतश्चोर्ध्वं महाबाहुः कुरुराजो भविष्यति ।
परिक्षिन्नाम नृपतिर्मिषतस्ते सुदुर्मते ।
पश्य मे तपसो वीर्यं सत्यस्य च नराधम ॥१५॥
15. itaścordhvaṁ mahābāhuḥ kururājo bhaviṣyati ,
parikṣinnāma nṛpatirmiṣataste sudurmate ,
paśya me tapaso vīryaṁ satyasya ca narādhama.
15. itaḥ ca ūrdhvam mahābāhuḥ kururājaḥ
bhaviṣyati parikṣit nāma nṛpatiḥ
miṣataḥ te sudurmate paśya me
tapasaḥ vīryam satyasya ca narādhama
15. itaḥ ca ūrdhvam sudurmate te miṣataḥ
mahābāhuḥ parikṣit nāma nṛpatiḥ
kururājaḥ bhaviṣyati narādhama
me tapasaḥ ca satyasya vīryam paśya
15. From now onwards, a mighty-armed king of the Kurus named Parikṣit will rule, while you are watching, O evil-minded one! O vilest among men, behold the power of my asceticism (tapas) and truth!
व्यास उवाच ।
यस्मादनादृत्य कृतं त्वयास्मान्कर्म दारुणम् ।
ब्राह्मणस्य सतश्चैव यस्मात्ते वृत्तमीदृशम् ॥१६॥
16. vyāsa uvāca ,
yasmādanādṛtya kṛtaṁ tvayāsmānkarma dāruṇam ,
brāhmaṇasya sataścaiva yasmātte vṛttamīdṛśam.
16. vyāsaḥ uvāca yasmāt anādṛtya kṛtam tvayā asmān karma
dāruṇam brāhmaṇasya sataḥ ca eva yasmāt te vṛttam īdṛśam
16. vyāsaḥ uvāca yasmāt tvayā asmān anādṛtya dāruṇam karma
kṛtam ca eva yasmāt brāhmaṇasya sataḥ te īdṛśam vṛttam
16. Vyāsa said: Because you, disregarding us, have committed this dreadful act (karma); and because such conduct has been yours, even though you are a Brahmin...
तस्माद्यद्देवकीपुत्र उक्तवानुत्तमं वचः ।
असंशयं ते तद्भावि क्षुद्रकर्मन्व्रजाश्वितः ॥१७॥
17. tasmādyaddevakīputra uktavānuttamaṁ vacaḥ ,
asaṁśayaṁ te tadbhāvi kṣudrakarmanvrajāśvitaḥ.
17. tasmāt yat devakīputraḥ uktavān uttamam vacaḥ
asaṃśayam te tat bhāvi kṣudrakarman vraja āśvitaḥ
17. tasmāt yat devakīputraḥ uttamam vacaḥ uktavān
tat asaṃśayam te bhāvi kṣudrakarman āśvitaḥ vraja
17. Therefore, what the son of Devakī (Kṛṣṇa) has spoken, that supreme word will undoubtedly come to pass for you, O mean-spirited one. Go quickly!
अश्वत्थामोवाच ।
सहैव भवता ब्रह्मन्स्थास्यामि पुरुषेष्वहम् ।
सत्यवागस्तु भगवानयं च पुरुषोत्तमः ॥१८॥
18. aśvatthāmovāca ,
sahaiva bhavatā brahmansthāsyāmi puruṣeṣvaham ,
satyavāgastu bhagavānayaṁ ca puruṣottamaḥ.
18. aśvatthāmā uvāca saha eva bhavatā brahman sthāsyāmi
puruṣeṣu aham satyavāk astu bhagavān ayam ca puruṣottamaḥ
18. aśvatthāmā uvāca brahman aham bhavatā saha eva puruṣeṣu
sthāsyāmi ca ayam bhagavān puruṣottamaḥ satyavāk astu
18. Aśvatthāman said: "O Brāhmaṇa, I will surely remain among these people (puruṣa) with you. And may this divine (bhagavān) supreme cosmic person (puruṣottama) be true to his word."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
प्रदायाथ मणिं द्रौणिः पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ।
जगाम विमनास्तेषां सर्वेषां पश्यतां वनम् ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
pradāyātha maṇiṁ drauṇiḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām ,
jagāma vimanāsteṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ paśyatāṁ vanam.
19. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca pradāya atha maṇim drauṇiḥ pāṇḍavānām
mahātmanām jagāma vimanāḥ teṣām sarveṣām paśyatām vanam
19. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca atha drauṇiḥ mahātmanām pāṇḍavānām
maṇim pradāya vimanāḥ teṣām sarveṣām paśyatām vanam jagāma
19. Vaiśampāyana said: "Then, having handed over the jewel to the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), disheartened, went to the forest while all of them watched."
पाण्डवाश्चापि गोविन्दं पुरस्कृत्य हतद्विषः ।
कृष्णद्वैपायनं चैव नारदं च महामुनिम् ॥२०॥
20. pāṇḍavāścāpi govindaṁ puraskṛtya hatadviṣaḥ ,
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaṁ caiva nāradaṁ ca mahāmunim.
20. pāṇḍavāḥ ca api govindam puraskṛtya hatadviṣaḥ
kṛṣṇadvai_pāyanam ca eva nāradam ca mahāmunim
20. ca api hatadviṣaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ govindam kṛṣṇadvai_pāyanam
ca eva mahāmunim nāradam ca puraskṛtya
20. And the Pāṇḍavas, who had vanquished their enemies, also placing Govinda (Kṛṣṇa) at their head, and Kṛṣṇa-Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), and the great sage Nārada...
द्रोणपुत्रस्य सहजं मणिमादाय सत्वराः ।
द्रौपदीमभ्यधावन्त प्रायोपेतां मनस्विनीम् ॥२१॥
21. droṇaputrasya sahajaṁ maṇimādāya satvarāḥ ,
draupadīmabhyadhāvanta prāyopetāṁ manasvinīm.
21. droṇaputrasya sahajam maṇim ādāya satvarāḥ
draupadīm abhyadhāvanta prāya upetām manasvinīm
21. droṇaputrasya sahajam maṇim ādāya satvarāḥ
manasvinīm prāya upetām draupadīm abhyadhāvanta
21. Having taken the jewel (maṇi) that was naturally born with Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), they swiftly rushed towards Draupadī, who was high-minded and preparing for a fast unto death (prāyopetā).
ततस्ते पुरुषव्याघ्राः सदश्वैरनिलोपमैः ।
अभ्ययुः सहदाशार्हाः शिबिरं पुनरेव ह ॥२२॥
22. tataste puruṣavyāghrāḥ sadaśvairanilopamaiḥ ,
abhyayuḥ sahadāśārhāḥ śibiraṁ punareva ha.
22. tataḥ te puruṣavyāghrāḥ sadaśvaiḥ anilopamaiḥ
abhi āyuḥ sahadāśārhāḥ śibiram punaḥ eva ha
22. tataḥ te puruṣavyāghrāḥ sahadāśārhāḥ anilopamaiḥ
sadaśvaiḥ punaḥ eva ha śibiram abhi āyuḥ
22. Then, those foremost among men, accompanied by the Daśārhas (Krishna and his relatives), returned to the camp on excellent horses swift as the wind.
अवतीर्य रथाभ्यां तु त्वरमाणा महारथाः ।
ददृशुर्द्रौपदीं कृष्णामार्तामार्ततराः स्वयम् ॥२३॥
23. avatīrya rathābhyāṁ tu tvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ ,
dadṛśurdraupadīṁ kṛṣṇāmārtāmārtatarāḥ svayam.
23. avatīrya rathābhyām tu tvaramāṇāḥ mahārathāḥ
dadṛśuḥ draupadīm kṛṣṇām ārtām ārtatarāḥ svayam
23. tu tvaramāṇāḥ mahārathāḥ rathābhyām avatīrya
svayam ārtatarāḥ ārtām kṛṣṇām draupadīm dadṛśuḥ
23. And having quickly dismounted from their two chariots, those great chariot warriors (mahārathāḥ) themselves became even more distressed upon seeing Draupadi (Kṛṣṇā), who was already suffering.
तामुपेत्य निरानन्दां दुःखशोकसमन्विताम् ।
परिवार्य व्यतिष्ठन्त पाण्डवाः सहकेशवाः ॥२४॥
24. tāmupetya nirānandāṁ duḥkhaśokasamanvitām ,
parivārya vyatiṣṭhanta pāṇḍavāḥ sahakeśavāḥ.
24. tām upa itya nirānandām duḥkhaśokasamannvitām
pari vārya vi ati atiṣṭhanta pāṇḍavāḥ sahakeśavāḥ
24. sahakeśavāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ nirānandām duḥkhaśokasamannvitām
tām upa itya pari vārya vi ati atiṣṭhanta
24. Having approached her, who was joyless and overcome with sorrow and grief, the Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by Keśava (Krishna), stood surrounding her.
ततो राज्ञाभ्यनुज्ञातो भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
प्रददौ तु मणिं दिव्यं वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
25. tato rājñābhyanujñāto bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
pradadau tu maṇiṁ divyaṁ vacanaṁ cedamabravīt.
25. tataḥ rājñā abhi anu jñātaḥ bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
pra dadau tu maṇim divyam vacanam ca idam abravīt
25. tataḥ rājñā abhi anu jñātaḥ mahābalaḥ bhīmasenaḥ
tu divyam maṇim pra dadau ca idam vacanam abravīt
25. Then, having been permitted by the king, Bhīmasena, who was of great strength, presented the divine jewel and spoke the following words.
अयं भद्रे तव मणिः पुत्रहन्ता जितः स ते ।
उत्तिष्ठ शोकमुत्सृज्य क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मर ॥२६॥
26. ayaṁ bhadre tava maṇiḥ putrahantā jitaḥ sa te ,
uttiṣṭha śokamutsṛjya kṣatradharmamanusmara.
26. ayam bhadre tava maṇiḥ putrahantā jitaḥ sa te
uttiṣṭha śokam utsṛjya kṣatradharmam anusmara
26. bhadre! ayam tava putrahantā maṇiḥ saḥ te jitaḥ.
śokam utsṛjya uttiṣṭha kṣatradharmam anusmara
26. O gentle lady, this gem, which belonged to the slayer of your sons, has been won by you. Rise up, casting aside your grief, and recall the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior.
प्रयाणे वासुदेवस्य शमार्थमसितेक्षणे ।
यान्युक्तानि त्वया भीरु वाक्यानि मधुघातिनः ॥२७॥
27. prayāṇe vāsudevasya śamārthamasitekṣaṇe ,
yānyuktāni tvayā bhīru vākyāni madhughātinaḥ.
27. prayāṇe vāsudevasya śamārtham asitekṣaṇe yāni
uktāni tvayā bhīru vākyāni madhughātinaḥ
27. asitekṣaṇe! bhīru! vāsudevasya madhughātinaḥ prayāṇe
śamārtham yāni vākyāni tvayā uktāni (tāni smara)
27. O dark-eyed one, O timid one, (remember) those words which were spoken by you to Vāsudeva, the slayer of Madhu, for the purpose of peace, at his departure.
नैव मे पतयः सन्ति न पुत्रा भ्रातरो न च ।
नैव त्वमपि गोविन्द शममिच्छति राजनि ॥२८॥
28. naiva me patayaḥ santi na putrā bhrātaro na ca ,
naiva tvamapi govinda śamamicchati rājani.

ca na eva tvam api govinda śamam icchati rājani
28. me patayaḥ na eva santi; na putrāḥ,
na ca bhrātaraḥ.
govinda! na eva tvam api rājani śamam icchati?
28. My husbands certainly do not exist, nor sons, nor brothers. And, O Govinda, do even you (Kṛṣṇa) not desire peace for King Yudhiṣṭhira?
उक्तवत्यसि धीराणि वाक्यानि पुरुषोत्तमम् ।
क्षत्रधर्मानुरूपाणि तानि संस्मर्तुमर्हसि ॥२९॥
29. uktavatyasi dhīrāṇi vākyāni puruṣottamam ,
kṣatradharmānurūpāṇi tāni saṁsmartumarhasi.
29. uktavatī asi dhīrāṇi vākyāni puruṣottamam
kṣatradharmānurūpāṇi tāni saṃsmartum arhasi
29. (tvam) puruṣottamam kṣatradharmānurūpāṇi dhīrāṇi vākyāni uktavatī asi.
tāni saṃsmartum arhasi.
29. You spoke firm words to the supreme cosmic person (puruṣottama), words that were in accordance with the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior. You ought to remember those (words).
हतो दुर्योधनः पापो राज्यस्य परिपन्थकः ।
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीतं विस्फुरतो मया ॥३०॥
30. hato duryodhanaḥ pāpo rājyasya paripanthakaḥ ,
duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṁ pītaṁ visphurato mayā.
30. hataḥ duryodhanaḥ pāpaḥ rājyasya paripanthakaḥ
duḥśāsanayasya rudhiram pītam visphurataḥ mayā
30. pāpaḥ rājyasya paripanthakaḥ duryodhanaḥ hataḥ
mayā visphurataḥ duḥśāsanayasya rudhiram pītam
30. The wicked Duryodhana, the enemy of the kingdom, has been killed. The blood of Duḥśāsana, while he was struggling, has been drunk by me.
वैरस्य गतमानृण्यं न स्म वाच्या विवक्षताम् ।
जित्वा मुक्तो द्रोणपुत्रो ब्राह्मण्याद्गौरवेण च ॥३१॥
31. vairasya gatamānṛṇyaṁ na sma vācyā vivakṣatām ,
jitvā mukto droṇaputro brāhmaṇyādgauraveṇa ca.
31. vairasya gatam ānṛṇyam na sma vācyā vivakṣatām
jitvā muktaḥ droṇaputraḥ brāhmaṇyāt gauraveṇa ca
31. vairasya ānṛṇyam gatam vivakṣatām vācyā na sma
droṇaputraḥ jitvā brāhmaṇyāt gauraveṇa ca muktaḥ
31. Our obligation regarding the enmity has been fulfilled. No reproach should be uttered by those who wish to speak. Drona's son was released after being defeated, due to his Brahminhood and (our) respect.
यशोऽस्य पातितं देवि शरीरं त्ववशेषितम् ।
वियोजितश्च मणिना न्यासितश्चायुधं भुवि ॥३२॥
32. yaśo'sya pātitaṁ devi śarīraṁ tvavaśeṣitam ,
viyojitaśca maṇinā nyāsitaścāyudhaṁ bhuvi.
32. yaśaḥ asya pātitam devi śarīram tu avaśeṣitam
viyojitaḥ ca maṇinā nyāsitaḥ ca āyudham bhuvi
32. devi,
asya yaśaḥ pātitam tu śarīram avaśeṣitam (saḥ) maṇinā viyojitaḥ ca (saḥ) āyudham bhuvi nyāsitaḥ ca
32. O queen, his glory has been brought down, but his body has been spared. He has been deprived of his jewel, and his weapon has been laid down on the ground.
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
केवलानृण्यमाप्तास्मि गुरुपुत्रो गुरुर्मम ।
शिरस्येतं मणिं राजा प्रतिबध्नातु भारत ॥३३॥
33. draupadyuvāca ,
kevalānṛṇyamāptāsmi guruputro gururmama ,
śirasyetaṁ maṇiṁ rājā pratibadhnātu bhārata.
33. draupadī uvāca | kevalānṛṇyam āptā asmi gurupūtraḥ guruḥ
mama | śirasi etam maṇim rājā pratibadhnātu bhārata

33. Draupadi said: "I have achieved only the fulfillment of my obligation. The guru's son (Aśvatthāman) is my (respected) teacher (guru). O King, O descendant of Bharata, may you fasten this jewel on your head!"
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तं गृहीत्वा ततो राजा शिरस्येवाकरोत्तदा ।
गुरोरुच्छिष्टमित्येव द्रौपद्या वचनादपि ॥३४॥
34. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
taṁ gṛhītvā tato rājā śirasyevākarottadā ,
gurorucchiṣṭamityeva draupadyā vacanādapi.
34. vaiśampāyana uvāca tam gṛhītvā tataḥ rājā śirasi eva
akarot tadā guroḥ ucchiṣṭam iti eva draupadyā vacanāt api

34. Vaiśampāyana said: Then the king, taking it, placed it on his head, considering it a remnant (ucchiṣṭa) from the preceptor (guru), and also complying with Draupadī's request.
ततो दिव्यं मणिवरं शिरसा धारयन्प्रभुः ।
शुशुभे स महाराजः सचन्द्र इव पर्वतः ॥३५॥
35. tato divyaṁ maṇivaraṁ śirasā dhārayanprabhuḥ ,
śuśubhe sa mahārājaḥ sacandra iva parvataḥ.
35. tataḥ divyam maṇivaram śirasā dhārayan prabhuḥ
śuśubhe saḥ mahārājaḥ sa-candraḥ iva parvataḥ
35. tataḥ divyam maṇivaram śirasā dhārayan saḥ
prabhuḥ mahārājaḥ sa-candraḥ parvataḥ iva śuśubhe
35. Then, bearing the excellent divine jewel on his head, that great king (prabhu) shone like a mountain adorned with the moon.
उत्तस्थौ पुत्रशोकार्ता ततः कृष्णा मनस्विनी ।
कृष्णं चापि महाबाहुं पर्यपृच्छत धर्मराट् ॥३६॥
36. uttasthau putraśokārtā tataḥ kṛṣṇā manasvinī ,
kṛṣṇaṁ cāpi mahābāhuṁ paryapṛcchata dharmarāṭ.
36. uttasthau putra-śoka-ārtā tataḥ kṛṣṇā manasvinī
kṛṣṇam ca api mahābāhum paryapṛcchat dharmarāṭ
36. tataḥ putra-śoka-ārtā manasvinī kṛṣṇā uttasthau
ca api dharmarāṭ mahābāhum kṛṣṇam paryapṛcchat
36. Then, the high-minded Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā), afflicted with grief for her sons, arose. And the king of (natural law) (dharmarāṭ), Yudhishthira, also questioned the mighty-armed Kṛṣṇa.
