वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा प्रयान्तं वार्ष्णेयं द्वारकां भरतर्षभाः ।
परिष्वज्य न्यवर्तन्त सानुयात्राः परंतपाः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā prayāntaṁ vārṣṇeyaṁ dvārakāṁ bharatarṣabhāḥ ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: As the Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) was thus departing for Dvārakā, the foremost of the Bhāratas, those tormentors of foes, embraced him and then returned along with their entourage.
पुनः पुनश्च वार्ष्णेयं पर्यष्वजत फल्गुनः ।
आ चक्षुर्विषयाच्चैनं ददर्श च पुनः पुनः ॥२॥
2. punaḥ punaśca vārṣṇeyaṁ paryaṣvajata phalgunaḥ ,
ā cakṣurviṣayāccainaṁ dadarśa ca punaḥ punaḥ.

ā cakṣurviṣayāt ca enam dadarśa ca punaḥ punaḥ

2. Phalguna (Arjuna) embraced the Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) again and again. And he looked at him repeatedly until Kṛṣṇa was beyond the range of sight.
कृच्छ्रेणैव च तां पार्थो गोविन्दे विनिवेशिताम् ।
संजहार तदा दृष्टिं कृष्णश्चाप्यपराजितः ॥३॥
3. kṛcchreṇaiva ca tāṁ pārtho govinde viniveśitām ,
saṁjahāra tadā dṛṣṭiṁ kṛṣṇaścāpyaparājitaḥ.
3. kṛcchreṇa eva ca tām pārthaḥ govinde viniveśitām
sam jahāra tadā dṛṣṭim kṛṣṇaḥ ca api aparājitaḥ

3. With great difficulty, Pārtha (Arjuna) then withdrew that gaze which was fixed upon Govinda (Kṛṣṇa). And Kṛṣṇa, the unconquered one, also (withdrew his gaze).
तस्य प्रयाणे यान्यासन्निमित्तानि महात्मनः ।
बहून्यद्भुतरूपाणि तानि मे गदतः शृणु ॥४॥
4. tasya prayāṇe yānyāsannimittāni mahātmanaḥ ,
bahūnyadbhutarūpāṇi tāni me gadataḥ śṛṇu.
4. tasya prayāṇe yāni āsan nimittāni mahātmanaḥ
bahūni adbhutarūpāṇi tāni me gadataḥ śṛṇu
4. mahātmanaḥ tasya prayāṇe yāni bahūni

4. Listen to me as I narrate the many wondrous omens that appeared at the departure of that great soul (Kṛṣṇa).
वायुर्वेगेन महता रथस्य पुरतो ववौ ।
कुर्वन्निःशर्करं मार्गं विरजस्कमकण्टकम् ॥५॥
5. vāyurvegena mahatā rathasya purato vavau ,
kurvanniḥśarkaraṁ mārgaṁ virajaskamakaṇṭakam.
5. vāyuḥ vegena mahatā rathasya purataḥ vavau
kurvan niḥśarkaram mārgam virajaskam akaṇṭakam
5. vāyuḥ mahatā vegena rathasya purataḥ niḥśarkaram

5. The wind blew with great speed in front of the chariot, making the path free of gravel, dust, and thorns.
ववर्ष वासवश्चापि तोयं शुचि सुगन्धि च ।
दिव्यानि चैव पुष्पाणि पुरतः शार्ङ्गधन्वनः ॥६॥
6. vavarṣa vāsavaścāpi toyaṁ śuci sugandhi ca ,
divyāni caiva puṣpāṇi purataḥ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ.
6. vavarṣa vāsavaḥ ca api toyam śuci sugandhi ca
divyāni ca eva puṣpāṇi purataḥ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ
6. vāsavaḥ ca api śuci sugandhi toyam ca divyāni
puṣpāṇi eva śārṅgadhanvanaḥ purataḥ vavarṣa
6. And Indra also rained pure and fragrant water, as well as divine flowers, in front of the wielder of the Śārṅga bow.
स प्रयातो महाबाहुः समेषु मरुधन्वसु ।
ददर्शाथ मुनिश्रेष्ठमुत्तङ्कममितौजसम् ॥७॥
7. sa prayāto mahābāhuḥ sameṣu marudhanvasu ,
dadarśātha muniśreṣṭhamuttaṅkamamitaujasam.
7. saḥ prayātaḥ mahābāhuḥ sameṣu marudhanvasu
dadarśa atha muniśreṣṭham uttaṅkam amitaujasam
7. saḥ mahābāhuḥ prayātaḥ sameṣu marudhanvasu
atha muniśreṣṭham uttaṅkam amitaujasam dadarśa
7. He, the mighty-armed one, journeyed through plains and deserts. Then he saw Uttanka, the best among sages (muni), possessing immeasurable energy.
स तं संपूज्य तेजस्वी मुनिं पृथुललोचनः ।
पूजितस्तेन च तदा पर्यपृच्छदनामयम् ॥८॥
8. sa taṁ saṁpūjya tejasvī muniṁ pṛthulalocanaḥ ,
pūjitastena ca tadā paryapṛcchadanāmayam.
8. saḥ tam sampūjya tejasvī munim pṛthulalocanaḥ
pūjitaḥ tena ca tadā paryapṛcchat anāmayam
8. saḥ तेजस्वी पृथुललोचनः तम् मुनिम् संपूज्य
तेन च पूजितः तदा अनामयम् पर्यपृच्छत्
8. He, the brilliant one with broad eyes, having honored that sage (muni), and being honored by him in return, then inquired about his well-being.
स पृष्टः कुशलं तेन संपूज्य मधुसूदनम् ।
उत्तङ्को ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठस्ततः पप्रच्छ माधवम् ॥९॥
9. sa pṛṣṭaḥ kuśalaṁ tena saṁpūjya madhusūdanam ,
uttaṅko brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhastataḥ papraccha mādhavam.
9. saḥ pṛṣṭaḥ kuśalam tena saṃpūjya madhusūdanam
uttankaḥ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaḥ tataḥ papraccha mādhavam
9. uttaṅkaḥ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaḥ tena madhusūdanam
pṛṣṭaḥ kuśalam saṃpūjya tataḥ mādhavam papraccha
9. The great Brahmin Uttanka, having been asked about his welfare by Madhusudana (Krishna) and having duly honored him, then questioned Madhava.
कच्चिच्छौरे त्वया गत्वा कुरुपाण्डवसद्म तत् ।
कृतं सौभ्रात्रमचलं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१०॥
10. kaccicchaure tvayā gatvā kurupāṇḍavasadma tat ,
kṛtaṁ saubhrātramacalaṁ tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.
10. kaccit śaure tvayā gatvā kurupāṇḍavasadma tat
kṛtam saubhrātram acalam tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
10. śaure kaccit tvayā tat kurupāṇḍavasadma gatvā
acalam saubhrātram kṛtam tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
10. O Shauri, having gone to the abode of the Kurus and Pandavas, I hope you have established an unwavering bond of brotherhood. You ought to explain that to me.
अभिसंधाय तान्वीरानुपावृत्तोऽसि केशव ।
संबन्धिनः सुदयितान्सततं वृष्णिपुंगव ॥११॥
11. abhisaṁdhāya tānvīrānupāvṛtto'si keśava ,
saṁbandhinaḥ sudayitānsatataṁ vṛṣṇipuṁgava.
11. abhisaṃdhāya tān vīrān upāvṛttaḥ asi keśava
sambandhinaḥ sudayitān satatam vṛṣṇipuṅgava
11. keśava vṛṣṇipuṅgava tān vīrān satatam sudayitān
sambandhinaḥ abhisaṃdhāya upāvṛttaḥ asi
11. O Keshava, O bull among the Vrishnis, have you returned after conciliating those heroes, your constantly beloved relatives?
कच्चित्पाण्डुसुताः पञ्च धृतराष्ट्रस्य चात्मजाः ।
लोकेषु विहरिष्यन्ति त्वया सह परंतप ॥१२॥
12. kaccitpāṇḍusutāḥ pañca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya cātmajāḥ ,
lokeṣu vihariṣyanti tvayā saha paraṁtapa.
12. kaccit pāṇḍusutāḥ pañca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca
ātmajāḥ lokeṣu vihariṣyanti tvayā saha paraṃtapa
12. paraṃtapa kaccit pañca pāṇḍusutāḥ ca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya
ātmajāḥ tvayā saha lokeṣu vihariṣyanti
12. O tormentor of foes, I hope that the five sons of Pandu and the sons of Dhritarashtra will live peacefully in the world together with you.
स्वराष्ट्रेषु च राजानः कच्चित्प्राप्स्यन्ति वै सुखम् ।
कौरवेषु प्रशान्तेषु त्वया नाथेन माधव ॥१३॥
13. svarāṣṭreṣu ca rājānaḥ kaccitprāpsyanti vai sukham ,
kauraveṣu praśānteṣu tvayā nāthena mādhava.
13. svarāṣṭreṣu ca rājānaḥ kaccit prāpsyanti vai
sukham kauraveṣu praśānteṣu tvayā nāthena mādhava
13. O Madhava, I hope that the kings in their own kingdoms will indeed attain well-being now that the Kauravas have been completely subdued by you, their protector.
या मे संभावना तात त्वयि नित्यमवर्तत ।
अपि सा सफला कृष्ण कृता ते भरतान्प्रति ॥१४॥
14. yā me saṁbhāvanā tāta tvayi nityamavartata ,
api sā saphalā kṛṣṇa kṛtā te bharatānprati.
14. yā me saṃbhāvanā tāta tvayi nityam avartata
api sā saphalā kṛṣṇa kṛtā te bharatān prati
14. O dear one, that high regard which I always held for you, O Krishna, has it now been made fruitful by you concerning the Bharatas?
वासुदेव उवाच ।
कृतो यत्नो मया ब्रह्मन्सौभ्रात्रे कौरवान्प्रति ।
न चाशक्यन्त संधातुं तेऽधर्मरुचयो मया ॥१५॥
15. vāsudeva uvāca ,
kṛto yatno mayā brahmansaubhrātre kauravānprati ,
na cāśakyanta saṁdhātuṁ te'dharmarucayo mayā.
15. vāsudeva uvāca kṛtaḥ yatnaḥ mayā brahman saubhrātre kauravān
prati na ca aśakyanta saṃdhātum te adharmarucayaḥ mayā
15. Vasudeva said: 'O Brahmin, I made an effort for reconciliation with the Kauravas. But they, being inclined towards unrighteousness (adharma), could not be brought to an agreement by me.'
ततस्ते निधनं प्राप्ताः सर्वे ससुतबान्धवाः ।
न दिष्टमभ्यतिक्रान्तुं शक्यं बुद्ध्या बलेन वा ।
महर्षे विदितं नूनं सर्वमेतत्तवानघ ॥१६॥
16. tataste nidhanaṁ prāptāḥ sarve sasutabāndhavāḥ ,
na diṣṭamabhyatikrāntuṁ śakyaṁ buddhyā balena vā ,
maharṣe viditaṁ nūnaṁ sarvametattavānagha.
16. tataḥ te nidhanam prāptāḥ sarve
sasutabāndhavāḥ na diṣṭam abhyatikrāntum
śakyam buddhyā balena vā maharṣe
viditam nūnam sarvam etat tava anagha
16. Consequently, all of them, along with their sons and relatives, met their demise. Destiny (diṣṭam) cannot be overcome by intellect or by force. O great sage, O sinless one, surely all of this is already known to you.
तेऽत्यक्रामन्मतिं मह्यं भीष्मस्य विदुरस्य च ।
ततो यमक्षयं जग्मुः समासाद्येतरेतरम् ॥१७॥
17. te'tyakrāmanmatiṁ mahyaṁ bhīṣmasya vidurasya ca ,
tato yamakṣayaṁ jagmuḥ samāsādyetaretaram.
17. te atyakrāman matim mahyam bhīṣmasya vidurasya
ca tataḥ yamakṣayam jagmuḥ samāsādya itaretaram
17. te mahyam bhīṣmasya vidurasya ca matim atyakrāman
tataḥ itaretaram samāsādya yamakṣayam jagmuḥ
17. They ignored my advice, as well as that of Bhishma and Vidura. Consequently, after confronting each other, they all went to the abode of death.
पञ्च वै पाण्डवाः शिष्टा हतमित्रा हतात्मजाः ।
धार्तराष्ट्राश्च निहताः सर्वे ससुतबान्धवाः ॥१८॥
18. pañca vai pāṇḍavāḥ śiṣṭā hatamitrā hatātmajāḥ ,
dhārtarāṣṭrāśca nihatāḥ sarve sasutabāndhavāḥ.
18. pañca vai pāṇḍavāḥ śiṣṭāḥ hatamitrāḥ hatātmajāḥ
dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ ca nihatāḥ sarve sasutabāndhavāḥ
18. vai pañca pāṇḍavāḥ hatamitrāḥ hatātmajāḥ śiṣṭāḥ
ca sarve sasutabāndhavāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ nihatāḥ
18. Indeed, only five Pandavas remained, their friends and sons having been killed. And all the Dhartarashtras, along with their sons and relatives, were slain.
इत्युक्तवचने कृष्णे भृशं क्रोधसमन्वितः ।
उत्तङ्कः प्रत्युवाचैनं रोषादुत्फाल्य लोचने ॥१९॥
19. ityuktavacane kṛṣṇe bhṛśaṁ krodhasamanvitaḥ ,
uttaṅkaḥ pratyuvācainaṁ roṣādutphālya locane.
19. iti uktavacane kṛṣṇe bhṛśam krodhasamanvitaḥ
uttaṅkaḥ pratyuvāca enam roṣāt utphālya locane
19. kṛṣṇe iti uktavacane bhṛśam krodhasamanvitaḥ
uttaṅkaḥ roṣāt locane utphālya enam pratyuvāca
19. When Krishna had spoken these words, Uttanka, greatly enraged, replied to him, his eyes bulging with fury.
यस्माच्छक्तेन ते कृष्ण न त्राताः कुरुपाण्डवाः ।
संबन्धिनः प्रियास्तस्माच्छप्स्येऽहं त्वामसंशयम् ॥२०॥
20. yasmācchaktena te kṛṣṇa na trātāḥ kurupāṇḍavāḥ ,
saṁbandhinaḥ priyāstasmācchapsye'haṁ tvāmasaṁśayam.
20. yasmāt śaktena te kṛṣṇa na trātāḥ kurupāṇḍavāḥ
sambandhinaḥ priyāḥ tasmāt śapsye aham tvām asaṃśayam
20. kṛṣṇa yasmāt te śaktena priyāḥ sambandhinaḥ kurupāṇḍavāḥ
na trātāḥ tasmāt aham tvām asaṃśayam śapsye
20. Because you, O Krishna, although capable, did not protect the Kurus and Pandavas, who were your dear relatives, I will therefore curse you, without a doubt.
न च ते प्रसभं यस्मात्ते निगृह्य निवर्तिताः ।
तस्मान्मन्युपरीतस्त्वां शप्स्यामि मधुसूदन ॥२१॥
21. na ca te prasabhaṁ yasmātte nigṛhya nivartitāḥ ,
tasmānmanyuparītastvāṁ śapsyāmi madhusūdana.
21. na ca te prasabham yasmāt te nigṛhya nivartitāḥ
tasmāt manyuparītaḥ tvām śapsyāmi madhusūdana
21. And because they were not forcibly restrained and turned back by you, therefore, filled with anger, I will curse you, O Madhusūdana.
त्वया हि शक्तेन सता मिथ्याचारेण माधव ।
उपचीर्णाः कुरुश्रेष्ठा यस्त्वेतान्समुपेक्षथाः ॥२२॥
22. tvayā hi śaktena satā mithyācāreṇa mādhava ,
upacīrṇāḥ kuruśreṣṭhā yastvetānsamupekṣathāḥ.
22. tvayā hi śaktena satā mithyācāreṇa mādhava
upacīrṇāḥ kuruśreṣṭhāḥ yaḥ tu etān samupekṣathāḥ
22. O Mādhava, although you are capable, you have acted wrongly, treating these foremost Kuru warriors poorly, for you entirely neglected them.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
शृणु मे विस्तरेणेदं यद्वक्ष्ये भृगुनन्दन ।
गृहाणानुनयं चापि तपस्वी ह्यसि भार्गव ॥२३॥
23. vāsudeva uvāca ,
śṛṇu me vistareṇedaṁ yadvakṣye bhṛgunandana ,
gṛhāṇānunayaṁ cāpi tapasvī hyasi bhārgava.
23. vāsudeva uvāca śṛṇu me vistareṇa idam yat vakṣye
bhṛgunandana gṛhāṇa anunayam ca api tapasvī hi asi bhārgava
23. Vāsudeva said: 'Listen to me in detail regarding what I shall tell you, O Bhṛgunandana. And please accept this entreaty, for indeed you are an ascetic (tapasvī), O Bhārgava.'
श्रुत्वा त्वमेतदध्यात्मं मुञ्चेथाः शापमद्य वै ।
न च मां तपसाल्पेन शक्तोऽभिभवितुं पुमान् ॥२४॥
24. śrutvā tvametadadhyātmaṁ muñcethāḥ śāpamadya vai ,
na ca māṁ tapasālpena śakto'bhibhavituṁ pumān.
24. śrutvā tvam etat adhyātmam muñcethāḥ śāpam adya vai
na ca mām tapasā alpena śaktaḥ abhibhavitum pumān
24. Having heard this spiritual (adhyātma) teaching, you should certainly withdraw your curse today. For no man is capable of overcoming me with meager austerity (tapas).
न च ते तपसो नाशमिच्छामि जपतां वर ।
तपस्ते सुमहद्दीप्तं गुरवश्चापि तोषिताः ॥२५॥
25. na ca te tapaso nāśamicchāmi japatāṁ vara ,
tapaste sumahaddīptaṁ guravaścāpi toṣitāḥ.
25. na ca te tapasas nāśam icchāmi japatām vara
tapas te sumahat dīptam guravaḥ ca api toṣitāḥ
25. japatām vara te tapasas nāśam na ca icchāmi te
tapas sumahat dīptam ca guravaḥ api toṣitāḥ
25. O best among those who recite, I do not wish for your asceticism (tapas) to be lost. Your asceticism (tapas) is very great and radiant, and your preceptors (guru) are also pleased.
कौमारं ब्रह्मचर्यं ते जानामि द्विजसत्तम ।
दुःखार्जितस्य तपसस्तस्मान्नेच्छामि ते व्ययम् ॥२६॥
26. kaumāraṁ brahmacaryaṁ te jānāmi dvijasattama ,
duḥkhārjitasya tapasastasmānnecchāmi te vyayam.
26. kaumāram brahmacaryam te jānāmi dvijasattama
duḥkhārjitasya tapasas tasmāt na icchāmi te vyayam
26. dvijasattama te kaumāram brahmacaryam jānāmi
duḥkhārjitasya tapasas te vyayam tasmāt na icchāmi
26. O best among the twice-born (dvija), I know your celibacy (brahmacarya) from childhood. Therefore, I do not wish for the loss of your asceticism (tapas), which was acquired with such difficulty.
