द्रौपद्युवाच ।
अहं सैरन्ध्रिवेषेण चरन्ती राजवेश्मनि ।
शौचदास्मि सुदेष्णाया अक्षधूर्तस्य कारणात् ॥१॥
1. draupadyuvāca ,
ahaṁ sairandhriveṣeṇa carantī rājaveśmani ,
śaucadāsmi sudeṣṇāyā akṣadhūrtasya kāraṇāt.
1. draupadi uvāca aham sairandhri-veṣeṇa carantī rāja-veśmani
śaucadā asmi sudeṣṇāyāḥ akṣadhūrtasya kāraṇāt
1. Draupadi said: "I, living in the king's palace in the guise of a female attendant (sairandhrī), am a cleaner for Sudēṣṇā because of the gambler."
विक्रियां पश्य मे तीव्रां राजपुत्र्याः परंतप ।
आसे कालमुपासीना सर्वं दुःखं किलार्तवत् ॥२॥
2. vikriyāṁ paśya me tīvrāṁ rājaputryāḥ paraṁtapa ,
āse kālamupāsīnā sarvaṁ duḥkhaṁ kilārtavat.
2. vikriyām paśya me tīvrām rājaputryāḥ paraṃtapa
āse kālam upāsīnā sarvam duḥkham kila ārtavat
2. O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), behold my severe degradation (vikriyā), I, a princess. I endure this period, undergoing all suffering (duḥkha) indeed like one in deep distress.
अनित्या किल मर्त्यानामर्थसिद्धिर्जयाजयौ ।
इति कृत्वा प्रतीक्षामि भर्तॄणामुदयं पुनः ॥३॥
3. anityā kila martyānāmarthasiddhirjayājayau ,
iti kṛtvā pratīkṣāmi bhartṝṇāmudayaṁ punaḥ.
3. anityā kila martyānām arthasiddhiḥ jaya ajayau
iti kṛtvā pratīkṣāmi bhartṝṇām udayam punaḥ
3. Indeed, for mortals, the fulfillment of objectives, whether victory or defeat, is impermanent. Knowing this, I again await the prosperity of my masters.
य एव हेतुर्भवति पुरुषस्य जयावहः ।
पराजये च हेतुः स इति च प्रतिपालये ॥४॥
4. ya eva heturbhavati puruṣasya jayāvahaḥ ,
parājaye ca hetuḥ sa iti ca pratipālaye.
4. yaḥ eva hetuḥ bhavati puruṣasya jayāvahaḥ
parājaye ca hetuḥ saḥ iti ca pratipālaye
4. That very same factor which leads to a man's victory also becomes the cause of his defeat; understanding this, I await the outcome.
दत्त्वा याचन्ति पुरुषा हत्वा वध्यन्ति चापरे ।
पातयित्वा च पात्यन्ते परैरिति च मे श्रुतम् ॥५॥
5. dattvā yācanti puruṣā hatvā vadhyanti cāpare ,
pātayitvā ca pātyante parairiti ca me śrutam.
5. dattvā yācanti puruṣāḥ hatvā vadhyante ca apare
pātayitvā ca pātyante paraiḥ iti ca me śrutam
5. Men, having given, then beg; and others, having killed, are killed. Furthermore, having caused others to fall, they themselves are made to fall by others. This is what I have heard.
न दैवस्यातिभारोऽस्ति न दैवस्यातिवर्तनम् ।
इति चाप्यागमं भूयो दैवस्य प्रतिपालये ॥६॥
6. na daivasyātibhāro'sti na daivasyātivartanam ,
iti cāpyāgamaṁ bhūyo daivasya pratipālaye.
6. na daivasya atibhāraḥ asti na daivasya ativartanam
iti ca api āgamam bhūyaḥ daivasya pratipālaye
6. There is no undue burden for destiny, nor is there any bypassing of destiny's course. Thus, having indeed repeatedly understood this teaching of destiny, I (continue to) observe.
स्थितं पूर्वं जलं यत्र पुनस्तत्रैव तिष्ठति ।
इति पर्यायमिच्छन्ती प्रतीक्षाम्युदयं पुनः ॥७॥
7. sthitaṁ pūrvaṁ jalaṁ yatra punastatraiva tiṣṭhati ,
iti paryāyamicchantī pratīkṣāmyudayaṁ punaḥ.
7. sthitam pūrvam jalam yatra punaḥ tatra eva tiṣṭhati
| iti paryāyam icchanti pratīkṣāmi udayam punaḥ
7. Just as water that stood before remains there again, so desiring this cyclical return, I await a new rise (of my fortune) once more.
दैवेन किल यस्यार्थः सुनीतोऽपि विपद्यते ।
दैवस्य चागमे यत्नस्तेन कार्यो विजानता ॥८॥
8. daivena kila yasyārthaḥ sunīto'pi vipadyate ,
daivasya cāgame yatnastena kāryo vijānatā.
8. daivena kila yasya arthaḥ sunītaḥ api vipadyate
| daivasya ca āgame yatnaḥ tena kāryaḥ vijānatā
8. Indeed, when one's objective (artha), even if well-managed, fails due to destiny (daiva), then a discerning person should exert effort for the opportune arrival of destiny (daiva).
यत्तु मे वचनस्यास्य कथितस्य प्रयोजनम् ।
पृच्छ मां दुःखितां तत्त्वमपृष्टा वा ब्रवीमि ते ॥९॥
9. yattu me vacanasyāsya kathitasya prayojanam ,
pṛccha māṁ duḥkhitāṁ tattvamapṛṣṭā vā bravīmi te.
9. yat tu me vacanasya asya kathitasya prayojanam |
pṛccha mām duḥkhitām tattvam apṛṣṭā vā bravīmi te
9. Regarding the purpose of this statement of mine that has been made, you may ask me, who am sorrowful, for the truth. Or, even if unasked, I shall tell it to you.
महिषी पाण्डुपुत्राणां दुहिता द्रुपदस्य च ।
इमामवस्थां संप्राप्ता का मदन्या जिजीविषेत् ॥१०॥
10. mahiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ duhitā drupadasya ca ,
imāmavasthāṁ saṁprāptā kā madanyā jijīviṣet.
10. mahiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇām duhitā drupadasya ca |
imām avasthām samprāptā kā mat anyā jijīviṣet
10. I, who am the chief queen (mahiṣī) of the Pāṇḍavas and the daughter of Drupada, having reached this terrible state, who else other than me would desire to live?
कुरून्परिभवन्सर्वान्पाञ्चालानपि भारत ।
पाण्डवेयांश्च संप्राप्तो मम क्लेशो ह्यरिंदम ॥११॥
11. kurūnparibhavansarvānpāñcālānapi bhārata ,
pāṇḍaveyāṁśca saṁprāpto mama kleśo hyariṁdama.
11. kurūn paribhavan sarvān pāñcālān api bhārata
pāṇḍaveyān ca samprāptaḥ mama kleśaḥ hi ariṃdama
11. O scion of Bharata, O subduer of enemies, my affliction has indeed arrived, humiliating all the Kurus, and even the Panchalas and the Pāṇḍavas.
भ्रातृभिः श्वशुरैः पुत्रैर्बहुभिः परवीरहन् ।
एवं समुदिता नारी का न्वन्या दुःखिता भवेत् ॥१२॥
12. bhrātṛbhiḥ śvaśuraiḥ putrairbahubhiḥ paravīrahan ,
evaṁ samuditā nārī kā nvanyā duḥkhitā bhavet.
12. bhrātṛbhiḥ śvaśuraiḥ putraiḥ bahubhiḥ paravīrahan
evam samuditā nārī kā nu anyā duḥkhitā bhavet
12. O slayer of enemy heroes, what other woman, thus accompanied by many brothers, fathers-in-law, and sons, would be distressed?
नूनं हि बालया धातुर्मया वै विप्रियं कृतम् ।
यस्य प्रसादाद्दुर्नीतं प्राप्तास्मि भरतर्षभ ॥१३॥
13. nūnaṁ hi bālayā dhāturmayā vai vipriyaṁ kṛtam ,
yasya prasādāddurnītaṁ prāptāsmi bharatarṣabha.
13. nūnam hi bālayā dhātuḥ mayā vai vipriyam kṛtam
yasya prasādāt durnītam prāptā asmi bharatarṣabha
13. O best of Bharatas, surely, when I was but a child, I must have indeed committed some offense against the Creator (Dhātṛ), by whose dispensation I have received this misfortune.
वर्णावकाशमपि मे पश्य पाण्डव यादृशम् ।
यादृशो मे न तत्रासीद्दुःखे परमके तदा ॥१४॥
14. varṇāvakāśamapi me paśya pāṇḍava yādṛśam ,
yādṛśo me na tatrāsīdduḥkhe paramake tadā.
14. varṇāvakāśam api me paśya pāṇḍava yādṛśam
yādṛśaḥ me na tatra āsīt duḥkhe paramake tadā
14. O Pāṇḍava, behold my complexion and appearance, such as it is now. Such a state was not mine even in my supreme distress at that time.
त्वमेव भीम जानीषे यन्मे पार्थ सुखं पुरा ।
साहं दासत्वमापन्ना न शान्तिमवशा लभे ॥१५॥
15. tvameva bhīma jānīṣe yanme pārtha sukhaṁ purā ,
sāhaṁ dāsatvamāpannā na śāntimavaśā labhe.
15. tvam eva bhīma jānīṣe yat me pārtha sukham purā
sā aham dāsatvam āpannā na śāntim avaśā labhe
15. O Bhīma, you certainly know the happiness I experienced in the past, O Pārtha. Now, having fallen into servitude, I am helpless and find no peace.
नादैविकमिदं मन्ये यत्र पार्थो धनंजयः ।
भीमधन्वा महाबाहुरास्ते शान्त इवानलः ॥१६॥
16. nādaivikamidaṁ manye yatra pārtho dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
bhīmadhanvā mahābāhurāste śānta ivānalaḥ.
16. na adaivikam idam manye yatra pārthaḥ dhanañjayaḥ
bhīmadhanvā mahābāhuḥ āste śāntaḥ iva analaḥ
16. I believe this situation is divinely ordained, given that Pārtha Dhanañjaya, the mighty-armed one with a formidable bow, sits here like a subdued fire.
अशक्या वेदितुं पार्थ प्राणिनां वै गतिर्नरैः ।
विनिपातमिमं मन्ये युष्माकमविचिन्तितम् ॥१७॥
17. aśakyā vedituṁ pārtha prāṇināṁ vai gatirnaraiḥ ,
vinipātamimaṁ manye yuṣmākamavicintitam.
17. aśakyā veditum pārtha prāṇinām vai gatiḥ naraiḥ
vinipātam imam manye yuṣmākam avicintitam
17. O Pārtha, the destiny of living beings is truly impossible for humans to comprehend. I consider this particular downfall of yours to be unforeseen.
यस्या मम मुखप्रेक्षा यूयमिन्द्रसमाः सदा ।
सा प्रेक्षे मुखमन्यासामवराणां वरा सती ॥१८॥
18. yasyā mama mukhaprekṣā yūyamindrasamāḥ sadā ,
sā prekṣe mukhamanyāsāmavarāṇāṁ varā satī.
18. yasyāḥ mama mukhaprekṣāḥ yūyam indrasamāḥ sadā
sā prekṣe mukham anyāsām avarāṇām varā satī
18. You, who were always like Indra and dependent on my glance, yet I, who am a superior woman, now look to the faces of other, inferior women.
पश्य पाण्डव मेऽवस्थां यथा नार्हामि वै तथा ।
युष्मासु ध्रियमाणेषु पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१९॥
19. paśya pāṇḍava me'vasthāṁ yathā nārhāmi vai tathā ,
yuṣmāsu dhriyamāṇeṣu paśya kālasya paryayam.
19. paśya pāṇḍava me avasthām yathā na arhāmi vai
tathā yuṣmāsu dhriyamāṇeṣu paśya kālasya paryayam
19. O Pāṇḍava, behold my current state, which I certainly do not deserve, especially while you are all still alive! See this reversal of time's fortune.
यस्याः सागरपर्यन्ता पृथिवी वशवर्तिनी ।
आसीत्साद्य सुदेष्णाया भीताहं वशवर्तिनी ॥२०॥
20. yasyāḥ sāgaraparyantā pṛthivī vaśavartinī ,
āsītsādya sudeṣṇāyā bhītāhaṁ vaśavartinī.
20. yasyāḥ sāgaraparyantā pṛthivī vaśavartinī āsīt
sā adya sudeṣṇāyāḥ bhītā aham vaśavartinī
20. The entire earth, which extended to the ocean, was once under her control; today, I, frightened, am a subordinate of Sudeṣṇā.
यस्याः पुरःसरा आसन्पृष्ठतश्चानुगामिनः ।
साहमद्य सुदेष्णायाः पुरः पश्चाच्च गामिनी ।
इदं तु दुःखं कौन्तेय ममासह्यं निबोध तत् ॥२१॥
21. yasyāḥ puraḥsarā āsanpṛṣṭhataścānugāminaḥ ,
sāhamadya sudeṣṇāyāḥ puraḥ paścācca gāminī ,
idaṁ tu duḥkhaṁ kaunteya mamāsahyaṁ nibodha tat.
21. yasyāḥ puraḥsarāḥ āsan pṛṣṭhataḥ ca
anugāminaḥ sā aham adya sudeṣṇāyāḥ
puraḥ paścāt ca gāminī idam tu
duḥkham kaunteya mama asahyam nibodha tat
21. She for whom there were escorts in front and followers behind, I, that very person, now walk both in front and behind Sudeṣṇā. This sorrow, O son of Kuntī, is unbearable for me; understand that.
या न जातु स्वयं पिंषे गात्रोद्वर्तनमात्मनः ।
अन्यत्र कुन्त्या भद्रं ते साद्य पिंषामि चन्दनम् ।
पश्य कौन्तेय पाणी मे नैवं यौ भवतः पुरा ॥२२॥
22. yā na jātu svayaṁ piṁṣe gātrodvartanamātmanaḥ ,
anyatra kuntyā bhadraṁ te sādya piṁṣāmi candanam ,
paśya kaunteya pāṇī me naivaṁ yau bhavataḥ purā.
22. yā na jātu svayam piṃṣe gātrodvārtanam
ātmanaḥ anyatra kuntyā bhadram te
sā adya piṃṣāmi candanam paśya kaunteya
pāṇī me na evam yau bhavataḥ purā
22. I, who never ground body ointment (gātrodvārtanam) for my own self (ātman), except for Kuntī, that very I today grind sandalwood, blessings be upon you! O son of Kuntī, behold my two hands; they were not like this before.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्यस्य दर्शयामास किणबद्धौ करावुभौ ॥२३॥
23. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityasya darśayāmāsa kiṇabaddhau karāvubhau.
23. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti asya
darśayāmāsa kiṇabaddhau karau ubhau
23. Vaiśampāyana said, "Thus, he showed him both hands, which were marked by calluses."
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
बिभेमि कुन्त्या या नाहं युष्माकं वा कदाचन ।
साद्याग्रतो विराटस्य भीता तिष्ठामि किंकरी ॥२४॥
24. draupadyuvāca ,
bibhemi kuntyā yā nāhaṁ yuṣmākaṁ vā kadācana ,
sādyāgrato virāṭasya bhītā tiṣṭhāmi kiṁkarī.
24. draupadī uvāca bibhemi kuntyā yā na aham yuṣmākam vā
kadācana sā adya agrataḥ virāṭasya bhītā tiṣṭhāmi kiṃkarī
24. Draupadī said, "I, who never feared Kuntī or any of you, now stand today, frightened, as a maidservant before Virāṭa."
किं नु वक्ष्यति सम्राण्मां वर्णकः सुकृतो न वा ।
नान्यपिष्टं हि मत्स्यस्य चन्दनं किल रोचते ॥२५॥
25. kiṁ nu vakṣyati samrāṇmāṁ varṇakaḥ sukṛto na vā ,
nānyapiṣṭaṁ hi matsyasya candanaṁ kila rocate.
25. kim nu vakṣyati samrāṭ mām varṇakaḥ sukṛtaḥ na vā
na anyapiṣṭaṃ hi matsyasya candanaṃ kila rocate
25. What will the Emperor say to me? (He will observe) whether the cosmetic work is well-done or not. Indeed, it is said that sandalwood paste prepared by another is not pleasing to the Matsya queen.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सा कीर्तयन्ती दुःखानि भीमसेनस्य भामिनी ।
रुरोद शनकैः कृष्णा भीमसेनमुदीक्षती ॥२६॥
26. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sā kīrtayantī duḥkhāni bhīmasenasya bhāminī ,
ruroda śanakaiḥ kṛṣṇā bhīmasenamudīkṣatī.
26. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca sā kīrtayantī duḥkhāni bhīmasenasya
bhāminī ruroda śanakaiḥ kṛṣṇā bhīmasenam udīkṣatī
26. Vaiśampāyana said, "The beautiful woman, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), recounting Bhīmasena's sufferings, wept softly while gazing at Bhīmasena."
सा बाष्पकलया वाचा निःश्वसन्ती पुनः पुनः ।
हृदयं भीमसेनस्य घट्टयन्तीदमब्रवीत् ॥२७॥
27. sā bāṣpakalayā vācā niḥśvasantī punaḥ punaḥ ,
hṛdayaṁ bhīmasenasya ghaṭṭayantīdamabravīt.
27. sā bāṣpakalayā vācā niḥśvasantī punaḥ punaḥ
hṛdayam bhīmasenasya ghaṭṭayantī idam abravīt
27. Sighing repeatedly with a voice choked with tears, she said this, stirring Bhimasena's heart.
नाल्पं कृतं मया भीम देवानां किल्बिषं पुरा ।
अभाग्या यत्तु जीवामि मर्तव्ये सति पाण्डव ॥२८॥
28. nālpaṁ kṛtaṁ mayā bhīma devānāṁ kilbiṣaṁ purā ,
abhāgyā yattu jīvāmi martavye sati pāṇḍava.
28. na alpam kṛtam mayā bhīma devānām kilbiṣam purā
abhāgyā yat tu jīvāmi martavye sati pāṇḍava
28. O Bhima, I must have committed a great offense against the gods in the past, because I, being unfortunate, am still alive when I ought to die, O Pāṇḍava.
ततस्तस्याः करौ शूनौ किणबद्धौ वृकोदरः ।
मुखमानीय वेपन्त्या रुरोद परवीरहा ॥२९॥
29. tatastasyāḥ karau śūnau kiṇabaddhau vṛkodaraḥ ,
mukhamānīya vepantyā ruroda paravīrahā.
29. tataḥ tasyāḥ karau śūnau kiṇabaddhau vṛkodaraḥ
mukham ānīya vepantyāḥ ruroda paravīrahā
29. Then Vrikodara (Bhima), the slayer of enemy heroes, brought her trembling hands, which were swollen and covered with calluses, to his face and wept.
तौ गृहीत्वा च कौन्तेयो बाष्पमुत्सृज्य वीर्यवान् ।
ततः परमदुःखार्त इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३०॥
30. tau gṛhītvā ca kaunteyo bāṣpamutsṛjya vīryavān ,
tataḥ paramaduḥkhārta idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
30. tau gṛhītvā ca kaunteyaḥ bāṣpam utsṛjya vīryavān
tataḥ paramaduḥkhārtaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
30. And then, the mighty son of Kunti (Bhima), intensely afflicted by sorrow, having taken those two (hands) and shed tears, spoke these words.
