वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौन्तेयः सर्वान्भ्रातॄनुपह्वरे ।
आहूय भरतश्रेष्ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

etacchrutvā tu kaunteyaḥ sarvānbhrātṝnupahvare ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard this, the son of Kuntī (Yudhiṣṭhira) then called all his brothers apart into a secluded place, and, O best of Bharatas (Janamejaya), spoke these words.
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु ये चारपुरुषा मम ।
ते प्रवृत्तिं प्रयच्छन्ति ममेमां व्युषितां निशाम् ॥२॥
2. dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu ye cārapuruṣā mama ,
te pravṛttiṁ prayacchanti mamemāṁ vyuṣitāṁ niśām.

pravṛttim prayacchanti mama imām vyuṣitām niśām
2. ye mama cārapuruṣāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu,

2. My spies, who are stationed within the army of Dhritarashtra's son, provide me with this information concerning the night that has just passed.
दुर्योधनः किलापृच्छदापगेयं महाव्रतम् ।
केन कालेन पाण्डूनां हन्याः सैन्यमिति प्रभो ॥३॥
3. duryodhanaḥ kilāpṛcchadāpageyaṁ mahāvratam ,
kena kālena pāṇḍūnāṁ hanyāḥ sainyamiti prabho.
3. duryodhanaḥ kila apṛcchat āpageyam mahāvratam
kena kālena pāṇḍūnām hanyāḥ sainyam iti prabho
3. kila duryodhanaḥ mahāvratam āpageyam apṛcchat,
"prabho,
kena kālena pāṇḍūnām sainyam hanyāḥ" iti
3. It is said that Duryodhana asked the son of Ganga (Bhishma), who was renowned for his great vow (mahāvrata): "O Lord, in what period of time would you destroy the army of the Pandavas?"
मासेनेति च तेनोक्तो धार्तराष्ट्रः सुदुर्मतिः ।
तावता चापि कालेन द्रोणोऽपि प्रत्यजानत ॥४॥
4. māseneti ca tenokto dhārtarāṣṭraḥ sudurmatiḥ ,
tāvatā cāpi kālena droṇo'pi pratyajānata.
4. māsena iti ca tena uktaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ sudurmatiḥ
tāvatā ca api kālena droṇaḥ api pratyajānat
4. ca tena uktaḥ sudurmatiḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ "māsena" iti.

4. "In a month," was what he (Bhishma) stated to the evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana). And Drona also made a similar declaration for the same period.
गौतमो द्विगुणं कालमुक्तवानिति नः श्रुतम् ।
द्रौणिस्तु दशरात्रेण प्रतिजज्ञे महास्त्रवित् ॥५॥
5. gautamo dviguṇaṁ kālamuktavāniti naḥ śrutam ,
drauṇistu daśarātreṇa pratijajñe mahāstravit.
5. gautamaḥ dviguṇam kālam uktavān iti naḥ śrutam
drauṇiḥ tu daśarātreṇa pratijajñe mahāstravit
5. naḥ iti gautamaḥ dviguṇam kālam uktavān śrutam.
tu drauṇiḥ mahāstravit daśarātreṇa pratijajñe
5. We have heard that Gautama (Kripacharya) declared that it would take twice that amount of time. However, Drona's son (Ashvatthama), who was skilled in great weapons, pledged to do it within ten nights.
तथा दिव्यास्त्रवित्कर्णः संपृष्टः कुरुसंसदि ।
पञ्चभिर्दिवसैर्हन्तुं स सैन्यं प्रतिजज्ञिवान् ॥६॥
6. tathā divyāstravitkarṇaḥ saṁpṛṣṭaḥ kurusaṁsadi ,
pañcabhirdivasairhantuṁ sa sainyaṁ pratijajñivān.
6. tathā divyāstravit karṇaḥ sampṛṣṭaḥ kurusaṃsadi
pañcabhiḥ divasaiḥ hantuṃ saḥ sainyaṃ pratijajñivān
6. tathā divyāstravit karṇaḥ kurusaṃsadi sampṛṣṭaḥ
saḥ pañcabhiḥ divasaiḥ sainyaṃ hantuṃ pratijajñivān
6. Karna, who was skilled in divine weapons, when questioned in the assembly of the Kurus, similarly promised that he would destroy the army within five days.
तस्मादहमपीच्छामि श्रोतुमर्जुन ते वचः ।
कालेन कियता शत्रून्क्षपयेरिति संयुगे ॥७॥
7. tasmādahamapīcchāmi śrotumarjuna te vacaḥ ,
kālena kiyatā śatrūnkṣapayeriti saṁyuge.
7. tasmāt aham api icchāmi śrotum arjuna te vacaḥ
kālena kiyatā śatrūn kṣapayeriḥ iti saṃyuge
7. tasmāt arjuna aham api te vacaḥ śrotum icchāmi
iti kālena kiyatā saṃyuge śatrūn kṣapayeriḥ
7. Therefore, Arjuna, I also wish to hear your assurance: in how much time you will destroy the enemies in battle.
एवमुक्तो गुडाकेशः पार्थिवेन धनंजयः ।
वासुदेवमवेक्ष्येदं वचनं प्रत्यभाषत ॥८॥
8. evamukto guḍākeśaḥ pārthivena dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
vāsudevamavekṣyedaṁ vacanaṁ pratyabhāṣata.
8. evam uktaḥ guḍākeśaḥ pārthivena dhanaṃjayaḥ
vāsudevam avekṣya idam vacanaṃ pratyabhāṣata
8. evam pārthivena uktaḥ guḍākeśaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
vāsudevam avekṣya idam vacanaṃ pratyabhāṣata
8. When addressed thus by the king, Arjuna (Guḍākeśa and Dhanaṃjaya) looked towards Vasudeva (Krishna) and replied with these words.
सर्व एते महात्मानः कृतास्त्राश्चित्रयोधिनः ।
असंशयं महाराज हन्युरेव बलं तव ॥९॥
9. sarva ete mahātmānaḥ kṛtāstrāścitrayodhinaḥ ,
asaṁśayaṁ mahārāja hanyureva balaṁ tava.
9. sarve ete mahātmānaḥ kṛtāstrāḥ citrayodhinaḥ
asaṃśayam mahārāja hanyuḥ eva balam tava
9. mahārāja sarve ete mahātmānaḥ kṛtāstrāḥ
citrayodhinaḥ asaṃśayam tava balam hanyuḥ eva
9. O great king, all these great-souled warriors, expert in weapons and fighting marvelously, would undoubtedly destroy your army.
अपैतु ते मनस्तापो यथासत्यं ब्रवीम्यहम् ।
हन्यामेकरथेनाहं वासुदेवसहायवान् ॥१०॥
10. apaitu te manastāpo yathāsatyaṁ bravīmyaham ,
hanyāmekarathenāhaṁ vāsudevasahāyavān.
10. apaitu te manastāpaḥ yathāsatyam bravīmi aham
hanyām ekarathena aham vāsudevasahāyavān
10. aham yathāsatyam bravīmi te manastāpaḥ apaitu
aham vāsudevasahāyavān ekarathena hanyām
10. Let your mental anguish depart. I speak truly: I, accompanied by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), can vanquish [them] with a single chariot.
सामरानपि लोकांस्त्रीन्सहस्थावरजङ्गमान् ।
भूतं भव्यं भविष्यच्च निमेषादिति मे मतिः ॥११॥
11. sāmarānapi lokāṁstrīnsahasthāvarajaṅgamān ,
bhūtaṁ bhavyaṁ bhaviṣyacca nimeṣāditi me matiḥ.
11. sāmarān api lokān trīn sahathāvarajaṅgamān
bhūtam bhavyam bhaviṣyat ca nimeṣāt iti me matiḥ
11. me matiḥ iti sāmarān api trīn lokān
sahathāvarajaṅgamān bhūtam bhavyam bhaviṣyat ca nimeṣāt
11. Even the three worlds, including the gods and all beings, both stationary and moving, along with everything of the past, present, and future, [I can vanquish] in a mere moment. This is my firm conviction.
यत्तद्घोरं पशुपतिः प्रादादस्त्रं महन्मम ।
कैराते द्वन्द्वयुद्धे वै तदिदं मयि वर्तते ॥१२॥
12. yattadghoraṁ paśupatiḥ prādādastraṁ mahanmama ,
kairāte dvandvayuddhe vai tadidaṁ mayi vartate.
12. yat tat ghoram paśupatiḥ prādāt astram mahat mama
kairāte dvandvayuddhe vai tat idam mayi vartate
12. yat tat ghoram mahat astram paśupatiḥ kairāte
dvandvayuddhe mama prādāt vai tat idam mayi vartate
12. That dreadful and mighty weapon which Paśupati (Śiva) bestowed upon me during the duel with the Kirāta - indeed, that very weapon now resides within me.
यद्युगान्ते पशुपतिः सर्वभूतानि संहरन् ।
प्रयुङ्क्ते पुरुषव्याघ्र तदिदं मयि वर्तते ॥१३॥
13. yadyugānte paśupatiḥ sarvabhūtāni saṁharan ,
prayuṅkte puruṣavyāghra tadidaṁ mayi vartate.
13. yat yugānte paśupatiḥ sarvabhūtāni saṃharan
prayuṅkte puruṣavyāghra tat idam mayi vartate
13. puruṣavyāghra yat paśupatiḥ yugānte sarvabhūtāni
saṃharan prayuṅkte tat idam mayi vartate
13. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), if Paśupati (Śiva) employs this [weapon] at the end of an eon, annihilating all beings, then that very power now resides within me.
तन्न जानाति गाङ्गेयो न द्रोणो न च गौतमः ।
न च द्रोणसुतो राजन्कुत एव तु सूतजः ॥१४॥
14. tanna jānāti gāṅgeyo na droṇo na ca gautamaḥ ,
na ca droṇasuto rājankuta eva tu sūtajaḥ.
14. tat na jānāti gāṅgeyaḥ na droṇaḥ na ca gautamaḥ
na ca droṇasutaḥ rājan kutaḥ eva tu sūtajaḥ
14. rājan gāṅgeyaḥ na jānāti droṇaḥ na ca gautamaḥ
na ca droṇasutaḥ tu sūtajaḥ kutaḥ eva
14. O King, neither Bhishma, nor Drona, nor Kripa, nor Drona's son Ashvatthama knows that. How, then, could Karna, the charioteer's son, possibly know it?
न तु युक्तं रणे हन्तुं दिव्यैरस्त्रैः पृथग्जनम् ।
आर्जवेनैव युद्धेन विजेष्यामो वयं परान् ॥१५॥
15. na tu yuktaṁ raṇe hantuṁ divyairastraiḥ pṛthagjanam ,
ārjavenaiva yuddhena vijeṣyāmo vayaṁ parān.
15. na tu yuktam raṇe hantum divyaiḥ astraiḥ pṛthagjanam
ārjavena eva yuddhena vijeṣyāmaḥ vayam parān
15. raṇe pṛthagjanam divyaiḥ astraiḥ hantum na tu
yuktam vayam ārjavena eva yuddhena parān vijeṣyāmaḥ
15. It is not appropriate to kill ordinary people (pṛthagjana) in battle using divine weapons. We shall conquer our enemies through straightforward warfare alone.
तथेमे पुरुषव्याघ्राः सहायास्तव पार्थिव ।
सर्वे दिव्यास्त्रविदुषः सर्वे युद्धाभिनन्दिनः ॥१६॥
16. tatheme puruṣavyāghrāḥ sahāyāstava pārthiva ,
sarve divyāstraviduṣaḥ sarve yuddhābhinandinaḥ.
16. tathā ime puruṣavyāghrāḥ sahāyāḥ tava pārthiva
sarve divyāstraviduṣaḥ sarve yuddhābhinandinaḥ
16. pārthiva tathā ime puruṣavyāghrāḥ tava sahāyāḥ
sarve divyāstraviduṣaḥ sarve yuddhābhinandinaḥ
16. O King, similarly, these tiger-like men are your allies. All of them are experts in divine weapons and all delight in battle.
वेदान्तावभृथस्नाताः सर्व एतेऽपराजिताः ।
निहन्युः समरे सेनां देवानामपि पाण्डव ॥१७॥
17. vedāntāvabhṛthasnātāḥ sarva ete'parājitāḥ ,
nihanyuḥ samare senāṁ devānāmapi pāṇḍava.
17. vedāntāvabhṛthasnātāḥ sarve ete aparājitāḥ
nihanyuḥ samare senām devānām api pāṇḍava
17. pāṇḍava vedāntāvabhṛthasnātāḥ ete sarve aparājitāḥ
(ete) samare devānām api senām nihanyuḥ
17. O Pāṇḍava, all of these men, purified as if by the concluding ceremonial bath (avabhṛtha) of the Vedānta studies, are unconquerable. They could slay even the army of the gods in battle.
शिखण्डी युयुधानश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ।
भीमसेनो यमौ चोभौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ ॥१८॥
18. śikhaṇḍī yuyudhānaśca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ ,
bhīmaseno yamau cobhau yudhāmanyūttamaujasau.
18. śikhaṇḍī yuyudhānaḥ ca dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pārṣataḥ
bhīmasenaḥ yamau ca ubhau yudhāmanyūttamaujasau
18. śikhaṇḍī ca yuyudhānaḥ ca dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pārṣataḥ
bhīmasenaḥ ca ubhau yamau ca yudhāmanyūttamaujasau
18. Shikhandi, Yuyudhana, Dhristadyumna (son of Prishata), Bhimasena, both the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), Yudhamanyu, and Uttamaujas.
विराटद्रुपदौ चोभौ भीष्मद्रोणसमौ युधि ।
स्वयं चापि समर्थोऽसि त्रैलोक्योत्सादने अपि ॥१९॥
19. virāṭadrupadau cobhau bhīṣmadroṇasamau yudhi ,
svayaṁ cāpi samartho'si trailokyotsādane api.
19. virāṭadrupadau ca ubhau bhīṣmadroṇasamau yudhi
svayam ca api samarthaḥ asi trailokyotsādane api
19. virāṭadrupadau ca ubhau yudhi bhīṣmadroṇasamau tvam
svayam ca api trailokyotsādane api samarthaḥ asi
19. Virata and Drupada, both of whom are equal to Bhishma and Drona in battle. And you yourself are capable even of destroying the three worlds.
क्रोधाद्यं पुरुषं पश्येस्त्वं वासवसमद्युते ।
क्षिप्रं न स भवेद्व्यक्तमिति त्वां वेद्मि कौरव ॥२०॥
20. krodhādyaṁ puruṣaṁ paśyestvaṁ vāsavasamadyute ,
kṣipraṁ na sa bhavedvyaktamiti tvāṁ vedmi kaurava.
20. krodhāt yam puruṣam paśyeḥ tvam vāsavasamadyute
kṣipram na saḥ bhavet vyaktam iti tvām vedmi kaurava
20. vāsavasamadyute kaurava tvam yam puruṣam krodhāt
paśyeḥ saḥ kṣipram vyaktam na bhavet iti tvām vedmi
20. O you whose splendor is like Vasava's (Indra's), if you were to see a person (puruṣa) who is the very embodiment of wrath, he would not quickly remain manifest. Thus I know you, O Kaurava.
