सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततः श्रीमान्मन्त्रिभिश्चानुमोदितः ।
आरुरोह प्रतिज्ञां स सर्पसत्राय पार्थिवः ।
ब्रह्मन्भरतशार्दूलो राजा पारिक्षितस्तदा ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
evamuktvā tataḥ śrīmānmantribhiścānumoditaḥ ,
āruroha pratijñāṁ sa sarpasatrāya pārthivaḥ ,
brahmanbharataśārdūlo rājā pārikṣitastadā.
1. sūtaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tataḥ śrīmān
mantribhiḥ ca anumoditaḥ āruroha pratijñām
saḥ sarpasatraya pārthivaḥ brahman
bharataśārdūlaḥ rājā pārikṣitaḥ tadā
1. Sūta said: Having spoken thus, O Brahmin, that glorious king Janamejaya, the lion among the Bharatas and son of Parikṣit, then, with the approval of his ministers, undertook the vow for the snake-sacrifice.
पुरोहितमथाहूय ऋत्विजं वसुधाधिपः ।
अब्रवीद्वाक्यसंपन्नः संपदर्थकरं वचः ॥२॥
2. purohitamathāhūya ṛtvijaṁ vasudhādhipaḥ ,
abravīdvākyasaṁpannaḥ saṁpadarthakaraṁ vacaḥ.
2. purohitam atha āhūya ṛtvijam vasudhādhipaḥ
abravīt vākyasaṃpannaḥ saṃpadarthakaram vacaḥ
2. Then, the eloquent king, having summoned his priest and ritual officiant, spoke words conducive to success and prosperity.
यो मे हिंसितवांस्तातं तक्षकः स दुरात्मवान् ।
प्रतिकुर्यां यथा तस्य तद्भवन्तो ब्रुवन्तु मे ॥३॥
3. yo me hiṁsitavāṁstātaṁ takṣakaḥ sa durātmavān ,
pratikuryāṁ yathā tasya tadbhavanto bruvantu me.
3. yaḥ me hiṃsitavān tātam takṣakaḥ saḥ durātmavān
pratikuryām yathā tasya tat bhavantaḥ bruvantu me
3. That wicked Takṣaka who killed my father - please tell me, how can I retaliate against him?
अपि तत्कर्म विदितं भवतां येन पन्नगम् ।
तक्षकं संप्रदीप्तेऽग्नौ प्राप्स्येऽहं सहबान्धवम् ॥४॥
4. api tatkarma viditaṁ bhavatāṁ yena pannagam ,
takṣakaṁ saṁpradīpte'gnau prāpsye'haṁ sahabāndhavam.
4. api tat karma viditam bhavatām yena pannagam takṣakam
saṃpradīpte agnau prāpsye aham sahabāndhavam
4. Is that ritual known to you, by which I can cause the serpent Takṣaka and his relatives to enter a fiercely burning fire?
यथा तेन पिता मह्यं पूर्वं दग्धो विषाग्निना ।
तथाहमपि तं पापं दग्धुमिच्छामि पन्नगम् ॥५॥
5. yathā tena pitā mahyaṁ pūrvaṁ dagdho viṣāgninā ,
tathāhamapi taṁ pāpaṁ dagdhumicchāmi pannagam.
5. yathā tena pitā mahyam pūrvam dagdhaḥ viṣāgninā
tathā aham api tam pāpam dagdhum icchāmi pannagam
5. Just as my father was previously consumed by his poison-fire, so I too wish to burn that wicked serpent.
ऋत्विज ऊचुः ।
अस्ति राजन्महत्सत्रं त्वदर्थं देवनिर्मितम् ।
सर्पसत्रमिति ख्यातं पुराणे कथ्यते नृप ॥६॥
6. ṛtvija ūcuḥ ,
asti rājanmahatsatraṁ tvadarthaṁ devanirmitam ,
sarpasatramiti khyātaṁ purāṇe kathyate nṛpa.
6. ṛtvijaḥ ūcuḥ asti rājan mahat satram tvadartham
devanirmitam sarpasatram iti khyātam purāṇe kathyate nṛpa
6. The priests said: "O King, there is a great sacrifice, divinely ordained for your specific purpose. It is known as the 'Serpent-Sacrifice' and is recounted in the Purāṇas, O King."
आहर्ता तस्य सत्रस्य त्वन्नान्योऽस्ति नराधिप ।
इति पौराणिकाः प्राहुरस्माकं चास्ति स क्रतुः ॥७॥
7. āhartā tasya satrasya tvannānyo'sti narādhipa ,
iti paurāṇikāḥ prāhurasmākaṁ cāsti sa kratuḥ.
7. āhartā tasya satrasya tvat na anyaḥ asti narādhipa
iti paurāṇikāḥ prāhuḥ asmākam ca asti saḥ kratuḥ
7. O King, the Pauranikas declared, 'No one other than you is the performer of that sacrifice. And that ritual is indeed meant for us (to be conducted).'
सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिर्मेने सर्पं हि तक्षकम् ।
हुताशनमुखं दीप्तं प्रविष्टमिति सत्तम ॥८॥
8. sūta uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ sa rājarṣirmene sarpaṁ hi takṣakam ,
hutāśanamukhaṁ dīptaṁ praviṣṭamiti sattama.
8. sūtaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ mene sarpam hi
takṣakam hutāśanamukham dīptam praviṣṭam iti sattama
8. Sūta said: 'O best one, thus addressed, that royal sage indeed believed that Takṣaka, the serpent, had entered, appearing blazing and fire-mouthed.'
ततोऽब्रवीन्मन्त्रविदस्तान्राजा ब्राह्मणांस्तदा ।
आहरिष्यामि तत्सत्रं संभाराः संभ्रियन्तु मे ॥९॥
9. tato'bravīnmantravidastānrājā brāhmaṇāṁstadā ,
āhariṣyāmi tatsatraṁ saṁbhārāḥ saṁbhriyantu me.
9. tataḥ abravīt mantravidaḥ tān rājā brāhmaṇān tadā
āhariṣyāmi tat satram sambhārāḥ sambhriyantu me
9. Thereupon, the King then said to those Brahmins who knew the sacred mantras: 'I shall perform that sacrifice. Let the necessary materials be gathered for me.'
ततस्ते ऋत्विजस्तस्य शास्त्रतो द्विजसत्तम ।
देशं तं मापयामासुर्यज्ञायतनकारणात् ।
यथावज्ज्ञानविदुषः सर्वे बुद्ध्या परं गताः ॥१०॥
10. tataste ṛtvijastasya śāstrato dvijasattama ,
deśaṁ taṁ māpayāmāsuryajñāyatanakāraṇāt ,
yathāvajjñānaviduṣaḥ sarve buddhyā paraṁ gatāḥ.
10. tataḥ te ṛtvijaḥ tasya śāstrataḥ
dvijasattama deśam tam māpayām āsuḥ
yajñāyatana kāraṇāt yathāvat
jñānaviduṣaḥ sarve buddhyā param gatāḥ
10. Then, O best among Brahmins, those priests of his - all of them experts in knowledge who had attained supreme understanding through their intellect - duly measured that place according to scriptural rules for the purpose of establishing a sacrificial ground.
ऋद्ध्या परमया युक्तमिष्टं द्विजगणायुतम् ।
प्रभूतधनधान्याढ्यमृत्विग्भिः सुनिवेशितम् ॥११॥
11. ṛddhyā paramayā yuktamiṣṭaṁ dvijagaṇāyutam ,
prabhūtadhanadhānyāḍhyamṛtvigbhiḥ suniveśitam.
11. ṛddhyā paramayā yuktam iṣṭam dvijagaṇa āyutam
prabhūta dhanadhānya āḍhyam ṛtvigbhiḥ suniveśitam
11. (The sacrificial ground was) endowed with supreme prosperity, esteemed, crowded with groups of Brahmins, rich in abundant wealth and grain, and meticulously arranged by the priests.
निर्माय चापि विधिवद्यज्ञायतनमीप्सितम् ।
राजानं दीक्षयामासुः सर्पसत्राप्तये तदा ॥१२॥
12. nirmāya cāpi vidhivadyajñāyatanamīpsitam ,
rājānaṁ dīkṣayāmāsuḥ sarpasatrāptaye tadā.
12. nirmāya ca api vidhivat yajñāyatanam īpsitam
rājānam dīkṣayāmāsuḥ sarpasatra āptaye tadā
12. After duly constructing the desired sacrificial ground, they then initiated the king for the attainment of the serpent sacrifice.
इदं चासीत्तत्र पूर्वं सर्पसत्रे भविष्यति ।
निमित्तं महदुत्पन्नं यज्ञविघ्नकरं तदा ॥१३॥
13. idaṁ cāsīttatra pūrvaṁ sarpasatre bhaviṣyati ,
nimittaṁ mahadutpannaṁ yajñavighnakaraṁ tadā.
13. idam ca āsīt tatra pūrvam sarpasatre bhaviṣyati
nimittam mahat utpannam yajñavighnakaram tadā
13. And, beforehand, when that serpent sacrifice was about to take place, a great omen that would cause an obstruction to the sacrifice had then arisen there.
यज्ञस्यायतने तस्मिन्क्रियमाणे वचोऽब्रवीत् ।
स्थपतिर्बुद्धिसंपन्नो वास्तुविद्याविशारदः ॥१४॥
14. yajñasyāyatane tasminkriyamāṇe vaco'bravīt ,
sthapatirbuddhisaṁpanno vāstuvidyāviśāradaḥ.
14. yajñasya āyatane tasmin kriyamāṇe vacaḥ abravīt
sthapatiḥ buddhisampannaḥ vāstuvidyāviśāradaḥ
14. While that sacrificial ground was being constructed, an intelligent architect, skilled in the science of architecture, spoke a word.
इत्यब्रवीत्सूत्रधारः सूतः पौराणिकस्तदा ।
यस्मिन्देशे च काले च मापनेयं प्रवर्तिता ।
ब्राह्मणं कारणं कृत्वा नायं संस्थास्यते क्रतुः ॥१५॥
15. ityabravītsūtradhāraḥ sūtaḥ paurāṇikastadā ,
yasmindeśe ca kāle ca māpaneyaṁ pravartitā ,
brāhmaṇaṁ kāraṇaṁ kṛtvā nāyaṁ saṁsthāsyate kratuḥ.
15. iti abravīt sūtradhāraḥ sūtaḥ paurāṇikaḥ
tadā yasmin deśe ca kāle ca
māpanā iyam pravartitā brāhmaṇam
kāraṇam kṛtvā na ayam saṃsthāsyate kratuḥ
15. Thus spoke the chief architect, the bard, the reciter of Puranas, then: "In whatever place and time this measurement has been commenced, by making a Brahmana the cause, this sacrifice will not conclude."
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु राजा स प्राग्दीक्षाकालमब्रवीत् ।
क्षत्तारं नेह मे कश्चिदज्ञातः प्रविशेदिति ॥१६॥
16. etacchrutvā tu rājā sa prāgdīkṣākālamabravīt ,
kṣattāraṁ neha me kaścidajñātaḥ praviśediti.
16. etat śrutvā tu rājā saḥ prāk dīkṣākālam abravīt
kṣattāram na iha me kaścit ajñātaḥ praviśet iti
16. Having heard this, that king then spoke to the chamberlain, before the time of initiation: "Let no unknown person enter here!"
ततः कर्म प्रववृते सर्पसत्रे विधानतः ।
पर्यक्रामंश्च विधिवत्स्वे स्वे कर्मणि याजकाः ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ karma pravavṛte sarpasatre vidhānataḥ ,
paryakrāmaṁśca vidhivatsve sve karmaṇi yājakāḥ.
17. tataḥ karma pravavṛte sarpasatre vidhānataḥ pari
akrāman ca vidhivat sve sve karmaṇi yājakāḥ
17. Then the ritual commenced in the snake sacrifice according to proper procedures. And the priests diligently performed their respective duties as prescribed.
परिधाय कृष्णवासांसि धूमसंरक्तलोचनाः ।
जुहुवुर्मन्त्रवच्चैव समिद्धं जातवेदसम् ॥१८॥
18. paridhāya kṛṣṇavāsāṁsi dhūmasaṁraktalocanāḥ ,
juhuvurmantravaccaiva samiddhaṁ jātavedasam.
18. paridhāya kṛṣṇavāsāṁsi dhūmasaṁraktalocanāḥ
juhuvuḥ mantravat ca eva samiddham jātavedasam
18. Donning black garments and with their eyes reddened by smoke, they offered oblations to the intensely blazing fire, accompanied by sacred mantras.
कम्पयन्तश्च सर्वेषामुरगाणां मनांसि ते ।
सर्पानाजुहुवुस्तत्र सर्वानग्निमुखे तदा ॥१९॥
19. kampayantaśca sarveṣāmuragāṇāṁ manāṁsi te ,
sarpānājuhuvustatra sarvānagnimukhe tadā.
19. kampayantaḥ ca sarveṣām uragāṇām manāṁsi te
sarpān ājuhuvuḥ tatra sarvān agnimukhe tadā
19. And they, causing the hearts of all serpents to tremble, then offered all those serpents into the fire's mouth.
ततः सर्पाः समापेतुः प्रदीप्ते हव्यवाहने ।
विवेष्टमानाः कृपणा आह्वयन्तः परस्परम् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ sarpāḥ samāpetuḥ pradīpte havyavāhane ,
viveṣṭamānāḥ kṛpaṇā āhvayantaḥ parasparam.
20. tataḥ sarpāḥ sam āpetuḥ pradīpte havyavāhane
vi veṣṭamānāḥ kṛpaṇāḥ āhvayantaḥ parasparam
20. Then, the serpents rushed into the intensely blazing sacrificial fire, writhing miserably and calling out to each other.
विस्फुरन्तः श्वसन्तश्च वेष्टयन्तस्तथा परे ।
पुच्छैः शिरोभिश्च भृशं चित्रभानुं प्रपेदिरे ॥२१॥
21. visphurantaḥ śvasantaśca veṣṭayantastathā pare ,
pucchaiḥ śirobhiśca bhṛśaṁ citrabhānuṁ prapedire.
21. vi sphurantaḥ śvasantaḥ ca veṣṭayantaḥ tathā pare
pucchaiḥ śirobhiḥ ca bhṛśam citrabhānum pra pedire
21. Trembling, hissing, and some writhing, they intensely plunged into the fire with their tails and heads.
श्वेताः कृष्णाश्च नीलाश्च स्थविराः शिशवस्तथा ।
रुवन्तो भैरवान्नादान्पेतुर्दीप्ते विभावसौ ॥२२॥
22. śvetāḥ kṛṣṇāśca nīlāśca sthavirāḥ śiśavastathā ,
ruvanto bhairavānnādānpeturdīpte vibhāvasau.
22. śvetāḥ kṛṣṇāḥ ca nīlāḥ ca sthavirāḥ śiśavaḥ tathā
ruvantaḥ bhairavān nādān petuḥ dīpte vibhāvasau
22. White, black, and blue ones, as well as old and young (snakes), fell into the blazing fire, uttering terrifying roars.
एवं शतसहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च ।
अवशानि विनष्टानि पन्नगानां द्विजोत्तम ॥२३॥
23. evaṁ śatasahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca ,
avaśāni vinaṣṭāni pannagānāṁ dvijottama.
23. evam śatasahasrāṇi prayutāni arbudāni ca
avaśāni vinaṣṭāni pannagānām dvijottama
23. In this manner, hundreds of thousands, millions, and even tens of millions of snakes, helpless and destroyed, (fell into the fire), O best of brahmins!
इन्दुरा इव तत्रान्ये हस्तिहस्ता इवापरे ।
मत्ता इव च मातङ्गा महाकाया महाबलाः ॥२४॥
24. indurā iva tatrānye hastihastā ivāpare ,
mattā iva ca mātaṅgā mahākāyā mahābalāḥ.
24. indurāḥ iva tatra anye hastihastāḥ iva apare
mattāḥ iva ca mātaṅgāḥ mahākāyāḥ mahābalāḥ
24. Among them, some (snakes) were moon-colored, others were like elephant trunks, and some, huge-bodied and immensely powerful, resembled intoxicated elephants.
उच्चावचाश्च बहवो नानावर्णा विषोल्बणाः ।
घोराश्च परिघप्रख्या दन्दशूका महाबलाः ।
प्रपेतुरग्नावुरगा मातृवाग्दण्डपीडिताः ॥२५॥
25. uccāvacāśca bahavo nānāvarṇā viṣolbaṇāḥ ,
ghorāśca parighaprakhyā dandaśūkā mahābalāḥ ,
prapeturagnāvuragā mātṛvāgdaṇḍapīḍitāḥ.
25. uccāvacāḥ ca bahavaḥ nānāvarṇāḥ
viṣolbaṇāḥ ghorāḥ ca parighaprakhyāḥ
dandaśūkāḥ mahābalāḥ prapetuḥ
agnau uragāḥ mātṛvāgdaṇḍapīḍitāḥ
25. Moreover, many (snakes) of various kinds and diverse colors, intensely poisonous; and dreadful, club-like, venomous serpents, immensely powerful, fell into the fire, tormented by the curse of their mother's words.
