Yudhishthira said: O Grandfather, O greatly wise one, whose prowess in battle is true, I wish to hear completely about Krishna, the immutable Lord.

O Grandfather, tell me how Hari assumed a form born from an animal species (yoni). For what purpose or mission did he do so?

Bhishma said: Once, I had gone hunting and was staying at the hermitage (āśrama) of Markandeya. There, I saw thousands of groups of sages who were seated together.

5.
Then, they performed a ritual offering (pūjā) to me with madhuparka. And having accepted that honor, I, in turn, greeted the sages.

This story was narrated there by the great sage Kaśyapa. Listen to that divine and mind-delighting tale here with a concentrated mind.

7.
Indeed, in ancient times, hundreds of great demons (asuras) like Naraka and others, who were chief among the Danavas, were filled with anger and greed, and intoxicated by their strength.

8.
And similarly, many other Danavas, who were fiercely arrogant in battle, could not tolerate the gods' unsurpassed prosperity.

9.
O King, the gods and divine sages, being oppressed by the demons, could not find peace as they wandered from place to place.

10.
And those dwellers of heaven (divaukasaḥ) saw the Earth, distressed in appearance, overrun by dreadful and immensely powerful demons. She was afflicted by her burden, humiliated, sorrowful, and sinking down.

11.
Then the terrified sons of Aditi (āditeyāḥ) said this to Brahmā: 'O Brahmā, how can we endure this oppression by the demons?'

12.
The Self-existent one (svayambhū), Brahmā, said this to them: 'A method (vidhi) has been devised by me in this matter. They (the demons) have become arrogant due to a boon, and due to their strength and intoxication (mada).'

13.
The greatly deluded will not perceive Vishnu, whose manifestation is imperceptible, the god who has assumed the form of a boar, and who is unassailable even by the immortals.

14.
He will indeed go swiftly to where those terrible, lowest of the demons reside hidden within the earth by the thousands, and he will destroy them. Having heard this, the best among the gods rejoiced.

ततः महातेजाः विष्णुः वाराहम् रूपम् आश्रितः (सन्) अन्तर्भूमिम् संप्रविश्य दितिजान् प्रति जगाम।
15.
Then Vishnu, mighty and resplendent, having assumed the form of a boar, went towards the demons after completely entering the interior of the earth.

16.
And all the assembled demons, having seen that superhuman being, all of them, deluded by time, suddenly stood firm.

17.
All of them, having rushed together, simultaneously seized the boar. Enraged, they pulled that boar from all sides.

18.
O mighty one, at that time, those great-bodied, exceedingly powerful, and highly potent lords of demons were unable to do anything to him.

19.
Then those lords of demons, seized by fear at that time, became astonished. And by the thousands, they considered their own selves (ātman) to be in peril.

20.
O best among the Bhāratas, then that God of gods, whose very self (ātman) is contemplation (yoga) and who is the guide of contemplation (yoga), having resorted to his divine power (yoga), the venerable one, at that moment...

21.
He roared a mighty roar, agitating the Daityas and Danavas. By that (roar), the worlds and all ten directions were made to resound.

22.
Due to that reverberating sound, the worlds reached a state of great disturbance. And all the directions, along with the gods headed by Indra (Śakra), became bewildered.

23.
And then the world, too, became exceedingly motionless. Both the stationary and the moving (beings) were bewildered by that sound.
