श्रुत्वा कर्णं कल्यमुदारवीर्यं क्रुद्धः पार्थः फल्गुनस्यामितौजाः ।
धनंजयं वाक्यमुवाच चेदं युधिष्ठिरः कर्णशराभितप्तः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śrutvā karṇaṁ kalyamudāravīryaṁ; kruddhaḥ pārthaḥ phalgunasyāmitaujāḥ ,
dhanaṁjayaṁ vākyamuvāca cedaṁ; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ karṇaśarābhitaptaḥ.

udāravīryam kruddhaḥ pārthaḥ phalgunasya
amitaujāḥ dhanañjayam vākyam uvāca
ca idam yudhiṣṭhiraḥ karṇaśarābhitaptaḥ

yudhiṣṭhiraḥ karṇam kalyam udāravīryam
śrutvā kruddhaḥ amitaujāḥ phalgunasya
pārthaḥ dhanañjayam idam vākyam ca uvāca
1. Sanjaya said: Yudhiṣṭhira, tormented by Karṇa's arrows, having heard Karṇa (who was) skillful and of great prowess, then spoke these words to Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), who was angry, a son of Pṛthā (Arjuna), and of immeasurable might.
इदं यदि द्वैतवने ह्यवक्ष्यः कर्णं योद्धुं न प्रसहे नृपेति ।
वयं तदा प्राप्तकालानि सर्वे वृत्तान्युपैष्याम तदैव पार्थ ॥२॥
2. idaṁ yadi dvaitavane hyavakṣyaḥ; karṇaṁ yoddhuṁ na prasahe nṛpeti ,
vayaṁ tadā prāptakālāni sarve; vṛttānyupaiṣyāma tadaiva pārtha.
2. idam yadi dvaitavane hi avakṣyaḥ
karṇam yoddhum na prasahe nṛpa
iti vayam tadā prāptakālāni sarve
vṛttāni upaiṣyāma tadā eva pārtha
2. pārtha yadi dvaitavane tvam nṛpa iti
idam avakṣyaḥ yat karṇam yoddhum
na prasahe hi tadā vayam sarve
prāptakālāni vṛttāni tadā eva upaiṣyāma
2. If you had indeed said this in Dvitavana – "O King, I cannot bring myself to fight Karṇa" – then, O Pārtha (Arjuna), we would have all undertaken actions suitable for that time.
मयि प्रतिश्रुत्य वधं हि तस्य बलस्य चाप्तस्य तथैव वीर ।
आनीय नः शत्रुमध्यं स कस्मात्समुत्क्षिप्य स्थण्डिले प्रत्यपिंष्ठाः ॥३॥
3. mayi pratiśrutya vadhaṁ hi tasya; balasya cāptasya tathaiva vīra ,
ānīya naḥ śatrumadhyaṁ sa kasmā;tsamutkṣipya sthaṇḍile pratyapiṁṣṭhāḥ.

balasya ca āttasya tathā eva vīra
ānīya naḥ śatrumadhyam sa kasmāt
samutkṣipya sthaṇḍile prati apiṃṣṭhāḥ
3. vīra mayi tasya vadham hi balasya

śatrumadhyam ānīya sa kasmāt
sthaṇḍile samutkṣipya prati apiṃṣṭhāḥ
3. O hero, having indeed promised me his death, and likewise the complete defeat of his strength (or army), why, having brought us into the midst of enemies, did you abandon us on the bare ground, having cast (us) away?
अन्वाशिष्म वयमर्जुन त्वयि यियासवो बहु कल्याणमिष्टम् ।
तन्नः सर्वं विफलं राजपुत्र फलार्थिनां निचुल इवातिपुष्पः ॥४॥
4. anvāśiṣma vayamarjuna tvayi; yiyāsavo bahu kalyāṇamiṣṭam ,
tannaḥ sarvaṁ viphalaṁ rājaputra; phalārthināṁ nicula ivātipuṣpaḥ.
4. anvāśiṣma vayam arjuna tvayi
yiyāsavaḥ bahu kalyāṇam iṣṭam tat
naḥ sarvam viphalam rājaputra
phalārthinām niculaḥ iva atipuṣpaḥ
4. arjuna rājaputra vayam tvayi bahu
iṣṭam kalyāṇam yiyāsavaḥ
anvāśiṣma tat naḥ sarvam viphalam
phalārthinām niculaḥ iva atipuṣpaḥ
4. O Arjuna, we desired much good fortune and prosperity for you, wishing to achieve it. O prince, all those aspirations of ours have proven fruitless, just like an excessively flowering *nicula* tree is useless to those seeking fruit.
प्रच्छादितं बडिशमिवामिषेण प्रच्छादितो गवय इवापवाचा ।
अनर्थकं मे दर्शितवानसि त्वं राज्यार्थिनो राज्यरूपं विनाशम् ॥५॥
5. pracchāditaṁ baḍiśamivāmiṣeṇa; pracchādito gavaya ivāpavācā ,
anarthakaṁ me darśitavānasi tvaṁ; rājyārthino rājyarūpaṁ vināśam.
5. pracchāditam baḍiśam iva āmiṣeṇa
pracchāditaḥ gavayaḥ iva apavācā
anarthakam me darśitavān asi
tvam rājyārthinaḥ rājyarūpam vināśam
5. tvam baḍiśam āmiṣeṇa iva pracchāditam
gavayaḥ apavācā iva pracchāditaḥ
anarthakam me rājyārthinaḥ
rājyarūpam vināśam darśitavān asi
5. You have shown me ruin in the guise of a kingdom—a ruin that is ultimately futile for one desiring a kingdom—just as a fish-hook is concealed by bait, or a wild ox is entrapped by false accusations.
यत्तत्पृथां वागुवाचान्तरिक्षे सप्ताहजाते त्वयि मन्दबुद्धौ ।
जातः पुत्रो वासवविक्रमोऽयं सर्वाञ्शूराञ्शात्रवाञ्जेष्यतीति ॥६॥
6. yattatpṛthāṁ vāguvācāntarikṣe; saptāhajāte tvayi mandabuddhau ,
jātaḥ putro vāsavavikramo'yaṁ; sarvāñśūrāñśātravāñjeṣyatīti.
6. yat tat pṛthām vāk uvāca antarikṣe
saptāhajāte tvayi mandabuddhau
jātaḥ putraḥ vāsavavikramaḥ ayam
sarvān śūrān śātravān jeṣyati iti
6. yat tat vāk antarikṣe tvayi
saptāhajāte mandabuddhau pṛthām uvāca
iti ayam jātaḥ putraḥ vāsavavikramaḥ
sarvān śūrān śātravān jeṣyati
6. That voice which spoke to Pritha from the sky, concerning you, dull-witted, when you were only seven days old, said: 'This son, who is born with the valor of Indra, will conquer all his heroic enemies!'
अयं जेता खाण्डवे देवसंघान्सर्वाणि भूतान्यपि चोत्तमौजाः ।
अयं जेता मद्रकलिङ्गकेकयानयं कुरून्हन्ति च राजमध्ये ॥७॥
7. ayaṁ jetā khāṇḍave devasaṁghā;nsarvāṇi bhūtānyapi cottamaujāḥ ,
ayaṁ jetā madrakaliṅgakekayā;nayaṁ kurūnhanti ca rājamadhye.
7. ayam jetā khāṇḍave devasaṅghān
sarvāṇi bhūtāni api ca uttamaujāḥ
ayam jetā madrakaliṅgakekayān
ayam kurūn hanti ca rājamadhye
7. ayam uttamaujāḥ khāṇḍave devasaṅghān
sarvāṇi bhūtāni api ca jetā
ayam madrakaliṅgakekayān jetā
ca ayam rājamadhye kurūn hanti
7. Possessing supreme power, this one will conquer the hosts of gods and indeed all beings in Khandava. This one will conquer the Madras, Kalingas, and Kekayas. And he will slay the Kurus in the assembly of kings.
अस्मात्परो न भविता धनुर्धरो न वै भूतः कश्चन जातु जेता ।
इच्छन्नार्यः सर्वभूतानि कुर्याद्वशे वशी सर्वसमाप्तविद्यः ॥८॥
8. asmātparo na bhavitā dhanurdharo; na vai bhūtaḥ kaścana jātu jetā ,
icchannāryaḥ sarvabhūtāni kuryā;dvaśe vaśī sarvasamāptavidyaḥ.
8. asmāt paraḥ na bhavitā dhanurdharaḥ
na vai bhūtaḥ kaścana jātu
jetā | icchan āryaḥ sarvabhūtāni
kuryāt vaśe vaśī sarvasamāptavidyaḥ
8. asmāt paraḥ dhanurdharaḥ na bhavitā,
na vai kaścana jetā jātu bhūtaḥ.
āryaḥ vaśī sarvasamāptavidyaḥ icchan sarvabhūtāni vaśe kuryāt.
8. No archer greater than him will ever exist, nor has any conqueror ever been born. This noble one, a master of all knowledge, is a controller who can bring all beings under his sway if he so desires.
कान्त्या शशाङ्कस्य जवेन वायोः स्थैर्येण मेरोः क्षमया पृथिव्याः ।
सूर्यस्य भासा धनदस्य लक्ष्म्या शौर्येण शक्रस्य बलेन विष्णोः ॥९॥
9. kāntyā śaśāṅkasya javena vāyoḥ; sthairyeṇa meroḥ kṣamayā pṛthivyāḥ ,
sūryasya bhāsā dhanadasya lakṣmyā; śauryeṇa śakrasya balena viṣṇoḥ.
9. kāntyā śaśāṅkasya javena vāyoḥ
sthairyena meroḥ kṣamayā pṛthivyāḥ
| sūryasya bhāsā dhanadasya lakṣmyā
śauryeṇa śakrasya balena viṣṇoḥ
9. śaśāṅkasya kāntyā,
vāyoḥ javena,
meroḥ sthairyena,
pṛthivyāḥ kṣamayā,
sūryasya bhāsā,
dhanadasya lakṣmyā,
śakrasya śauryeṇa,
viṣṇoḥ balena (tulyah).
9. Possessing the radiance of the moon, the speed of the wind, the steadiness of Mount Meru, the forbearance of the earth, the brilliance of the sun, the prosperity of Kubera, the valor of Indra, and the strength of Vishnu.
तुल्यो महात्मा तव कुन्ति पुत्रो जातोऽदितेर्विष्णुरिवारिहन्ता ।
स्वेषां जयाय द्विषतां वधाय ख्यातोऽमितौजाः कुलतन्तुकर्ता ॥१०॥
10. tulyo mahātmā tava kunti putro; jāto'diterviṣṇurivārihantā ,
sveṣāṁ jayāya dviṣatāṁ vadhāya; khyāto'mitaujāḥ kulatantukartā.
10. tulyaḥ mahātmā tava kunti putraḥ
jātaḥ aditeḥ viṣṇuḥ iva arihantā
| sveṣām jayāya dviṣatām vadhāya
khyātaḥ amitaujāḥ kulatantukartā
10. Kunti,
tava mahātmā putraḥ aditeḥ viṣṇuḥ iva arihantā jātaḥ tulyaḥ (asti).
sveṣām jayāya dviṣatām vadhāya khyātaḥ amitaujāḥ kulatantukartā (ca asti).
10. O Kunti, your great-souled (mahātman) son, born like Vishnu to Aditi, is a slayer of enemies, equal to all these qualities. Renowned for his immeasurable might, he brings victory to his own people, destruction to his foes, and upholds the family lineage.
इत्यन्तरिक्षे शतशृङ्गमूर्ध्नि तपस्विनां शृण्वतां वागुवाच ।
एवंविधं त्वां तच्च नाभूत्तवाद्य देवा हि नूनमनृतं वदन्ति ॥११॥
11. ityantarikṣe śataśṛṅgamūrdhni; tapasvināṁ śṛṇvatāṁ vāguvāca ,
evaṁvidhaṁ tvāṁ tacca nābhūttavādya; devā hi nūnamanṛtaṁ vadanti.
11. iti antarikṣe śataśṛṅgamūrdhni
tapasvinām śṛṇvatām vāk uvāca |
evaṃvidham tvām tat ca na abhūt tava
adya devāḥ hi nūnam anṛtam vadanti
11. iti antarikṣe śataśṛṅgamūrdhni tapasvinām śṛṇvatām vāk uvāca.
(Kunti evaṃ cintayati sma): evaṃvidham tvām tat ca adya tava na abhūt.
hi nūnam devāḥ anṛtam vadanti.
11. Thus, on the peak of Śataśṛṅga, a voice spoke in the sky while the ascetics listened. (Kunti then lamented): 'Though you are of such a kind, that (promised glory) is not for you today, for the gods certainly speak untruth.'
तथापरेषामृषिसत्तमानां श्रुत्वा गिरं पूजयतां सदैव ।
न संनतिं प्रैमि सुयोधनस्य न त्वा जानाम्याधिरथेर्भयार्तम् ॥१२॥
12. tathāpareṣāmṛṣisattamānāṁ; śrutvā giraṁ pūjayatāṁ sadaiva ,
na saṁnatiṁ praimi suyodhanasya; na tvā jānāmyādhiratherbhayārtam.
12. tathā apareṣām ṛṣisattamānām śrutvā
giram pūjayatām sadaiva | na
saṃnatim praimi suyodhanasya na
tvā jānāmi ādhiratheḥ bhayārtam
12. sadā eva pūjayatām apareṣām ṛṣisattamānām giram śrutvā,
suyodhanasya saṃnatim na praimi.
ādhiratheḥ bhayārtam tvā na jānāmi.
12. Having always listened to the words of other excellent sages (ṛṣisattamas) who honor (truth), I do not accept Duryodhana's submission, nor do I consider you, son of Adhiratha (Karṇa), to be afflicted by fear.
त्वष्ट्रा कृतं वाहमकूजनाक्षं शुभं समास्थाय कपिध्वजं त्वम् ।
खड्गं गृहीत्वा हेमचित्रं समिद्धं धनुश्चेदं गाण्डिवं तालमात्रम् ।
स केशवेनोह्यमानः कथं नु कर्णाद्भीतो व्यपयातोऽसि पार्थ ॥१३॥
13. tvaṣṭrā kṛtaṁ vāhamakūjanākṣaṁ; śubhaṁ samāsthāya kapidhvajaṁ tvam ,
khaḍgaṁ gṛhītvā hemacitraṁ samiddhaṁ; dhanuścedaṁ gāṇḍivaṁ tālamātram ,
sa keśavenohyamānaḥ kathaṁ nu; karṇādbhīto vyapayāto'si pārtha.
13. tvaṣṭrā kṛtam vāham akūjanākṣam śubham samāsthāya
kapidhvajam tvam | khaḍgam gṛhītvā hemacitram samiddham
dhanuḥ ca idam gāṇḍīvam tālamātram | saḥ keśavena
uhyamānaḥ katham nu karṇāt bhītaḥ vyapayātaḥ asi pārtha
13. pārtha,
tvam tvaṣṭrā kṛtam akūjanākṣam śubham kapidhvajam vāham samāsthāya,
hemacitram khaḍgam gṛhītvā,
ca idam tālamātram samiddham gāṇḍīvam dhanuḥ (gṛhītvā ca),
saḥ keśavena uhyamānaḥ (san),
karṇāt bhītaḥ (san),
katham nu vyapayātaḥ asi?
13. How could you, O Pārtha (Arjuna), after mounting that auspicious chariot — crafted by Tvaṣṭā, with silent wheels, and bearing the monkey banner — and having taken this magnificent, gold-adorned sword and this blazing Gāṇḍīva bow, as tall as a palm tree, how could you, being driven by Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) himself, flee, terrified of Karṇa?
धनुश्चैतत्केशवाय प्रदाय यन्ताभविष्यस्त्वं रणे चेद्दुरात्मन् ।
ततोऽहनिष्यत्केशवः कर्णमुग्रं मरुत्पतिर्वृत्रमिवात्तवज्रः ॥१४॥
14. dhanuścaitatkeśavāya pradāya; yantābhaviṣyastvaṁ raṇe ceddurātman ,
tato'haniṣyatkeśavaḥ karṇamugraṁ; marutpatirvṛtramivāttavajraḥ.
14. dhanuḥ ca etat keśavāya pradāya yantā
abhaviṣyaḥ tvam raṇe cet durātman
| tataḥ ahaniṣyat keśavaḥ karṇam
ugram marutpatiḥ vṛtram iva āttavajraḥ
14. durātman,
cet tvam etat dhanuḥ keśavāya pradāya raṇe yantā abhaviṣyaḥ,
tataḥ āttavajraḥ marutpatiḥ vṛtram iva,
keśavaḥ ugram karṇam ahaniṣyat.
14. O evil-minded one, if you had given this bow to Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) and had become the charioteer in battle, then Keśava would have struck down the fierce Karṇa, just as Marutpati (Indra), having seized his thunderbolt, struck down Vṛtra.
मासेऽपतिष्यः पञ्चमे त्वं प्रकृच्छ्रे न वा गर्भोऽप्यभविष्यः पृथायाः ।
तत्ते श्रमो राजपुत्राभविष्यन्न संग्रामादपयातुं दुरात्मन् ॥१५॥
15. māse'patiṣyaḥ pañcame tvaṁ prakṛcchre; na vā garbho'pyabhaviṣyaḥ pṛthāyāḥ ,
tatte śramo rājaputrābhaviṣya;nna saṁgrāmādapayātuṁ durātman.
15. māse apatiṣyaḥ pañcame tvam prakṛcchre
| na vā garbhaḥ api abhaviṣyaḥ
pṛthāyāḥ | tat te śramaḥ rājaputra
abhaviṣyat na saṅgrāmāt apayātum durātman
15. durātman rājaputra,
tvam prakṛcchre pañcame māse apatiṣyaḥ vā,
pṛthāyāḥ garbhaḥ api na abhaviṣyaḥ (vā).
tat te śramaḥ saṅgrāmāt apayātum na abhaviṣyat.
15. O prince (rājaputra), O evil-minded one (durātman), it would have been better if you had suffered a difficult miscarriage in the fifth month, or perhaps not even been conceived as a fetus in Pṛthā's (Kuntī's) womb at all! Therefore, your effort should not be for fleeing from battle.
