शतक्रतुरथापश्यद्बलेर्दीप्तां महात्मनः ।
स्वरूपिणीं शरीराद्धि तदा निष्क्रामतीं श्रियम् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
śatakraturathāpaśyadbalerdīptāṁ mahātmanaḥ ,
svarūpiṇīṁ śarīrāddhi tadā niṣkrāmatīṁ śriyam.

1. Bhishma said: Then Indra (śatakratu) indeed saw Splendor (śrī) emerging in her own radiant form from the body of the great-souled (ātman) Bali.
तां दीप्तां प्रभया दृष्ट्वा भगवान्पाकशासनः ।
विस्मयोत्फुल्लनयनो बलिं पप्रच्छ वासवः ॥२॥
2. tāṁ dīptāṁ prabhayā dṛṣṭvā bhagavānpākaśāsanaḥ ,
vismayotphullanayano baliṁ papraccha vāsavaḥ.

2. Seeing her, shining brightly with her radiance, the venerable Indra (Pākaśāsana), Vāsava, his eyes wide open with wonder, questioned Bali.
बले केयमपक्रान्ता रोचमाना शिखण्डिनी ।
त्वत्तः स्थिता सकेयूरा दीप्यमाना स्वतेजसा ॥३॥
3. bale keyamapakrāntā rocamānā śikhaṇḍinī ,
tvattaḥ sthitā sakeyūrā dīpyamānā svatejasā.
3. bale kā iyam apakrāntā rocamānā śikhaṇḍinī
tvattaḥ sthitā sakeyūrā dīpyamānā svatejasā
3. bale,

3. "O Bali, who is this adorned woman, shining, standing apart from you? She is wearing armlets and radiating with her own splendor."
बलिरुवाच ।
न हीमामासुरीं वेद्मि न दैवीं न च मानुषीम् ।
त्वमेवैनां पृच्छ मा वा यथेष्टं कुरु वासव ॥४॥
4. baliruvāca ,
na hīmāmāsurīṁ vedmi na daivīṁ na ca mānuṣīm ,
tvamevaināṁ pṛccha mā vā yatheṣṭaṁ kuru vāsava.
4. baliḥ uvāca na hi imām āsurīm vedmi na daivīm na ca
mānuṣīm tvam eva enām pṛccha mā vā yatheṣṭam kuru vāsava
4. baliḥ uvāca: "hi na imām āsurīm vedmi,
na daivīm,
ca na mānuṣīm.
vāsava,
tvam eva enām pṛccha,
vā mā yatheṣṭam kuru.
"
4. Bali said, "Indeed, I do not know if she is a demoness (āsurī), a goddess (daivī), or a human woman (mānuṣī). You yourself should ask her, or do as you please, O Vāsava."
शक्र उवाच ।
का त्वं बलेरपक्रान्ता रोचमाना शिखण्डिनी ।
अजानतो ममाचक्ष्व नामधेयं शुचिस्मिते ॥५॥
5. śakra uvāca ,
kā tvaṁ balerapakrāntā rocamānā śikhaṇḍinī ,
ajānato mamācakṣva nāmadheyaṁ śucismite.
5. śakraḥ uvāca kā tvam baleḥ apakrāntā rocamānā
śikhaṇḍinī ajānataḥ mama ācakṣva nāmadheyam śucismite
5. śakraḥ uvāca: "śucismite,
kā tvam baleḥ apakrāntā rocamānā śikhaṇḍinī? ajānataḥ mama nāmadheyam ācakṣva.
"
5. Śakra said, "Who are you, adorned woman, shining and standing apart from Bali? O pure-smiling one, please tell your name to me, who is ignorant."
का त्वं तिष्ठसि मायेव दीप्यमाना स्वतेजसा ।
हित्वा दैत्येश्वरं सुभ्रु तन्ममाचक्ष्व तत्त्वतः ॥६॥
6. kā tvaṁ tiṣṭhasi māyeva dīpyamānā svatejasā ,
hitvā daityeśvaraṁ subhru tanmamācakṣva tattvataḥ.
6. kā tvam tiṣṭhasi māyā iva dīpyamānā sva-tejasā
hitvā daityeśvaram subhru tat mama ācakṣva tattvataḥ
6. subhru tvam kā svatejasā māyā iva dīpyamānā tiṣṭhasi
daityeśvaram hitvā tat tattvataḥ mama ācakṣva
6. O beautiful-browed one, who are you, standing here shining with your own splendor as if by a magical power (māyā)? Tell me truly the reason why you have abandoned the lord of demons.
श्रीरुवाच ।
न मा विरोचनो वेद न मा वैरोचनो बलिः ।
आहुर्मां दुःसहेत्येवं विधित्सेति च मां विदुः ॥७॥
7. śrīruvāca ,
na mā virocano veda na mā vairocano baliḥ ,
āhurmāṁ duḥsahetyevaṁ vidhitseti ca māṁ viduḥ.
7. śrīḥ uvāca | na mā virocanaḥ veda na mā vairocanaḥ baliḥ
| āhuḥ mām duḥsahā iti evam vidhitsā iti ca mām viduḥ
7. śrīḥ uvāca virocanaḥ mā na veda vairocanaḥ baliḥ mā na
(veda) mām duḥsahā iti āhuḥ evam ca mām vidhitsā iti viduḥ
7. Śrī said: 'Neither Virocana knows me, nor Bali, son of Virocana. They call me Duḥsahā (the Unbearable), and they know me as Vidhitsā (the Desire to Create).'
भूतिर्लक्ष्मीति मामाहुः श्रीरित्येवं च वासव ।
त्वं मां शक्र न जानीषे सर्वे देवा न मां विदुः ॥८॥
8. bhūtirlakṣmīti māmāhuḥ śrīrityevaṁ ca vāsava ,
tvaṁ māṁ śakra na jānīṣe sarve devā na māṁ viduḥ.
8. bhūtiḥ lakṣmī iti mām āhuḥ śrīḥ iti evam ca vāsava
| tvam mām śakra na jānīṣe sarve devāḥ na mām viduḥ
8. vāsava bhūtiḥ lakṣmī iti śrīḥ iti evam ca mām āhuḥ
śakra tvam mām na jānīṣe sarve devāḥ mām na viduḥ
8. O Vāsava (Indra), they call me Bhūti (power/prosperity), Lakṣmī, and also Śrī. O Śakra, you do not know me, nor do all the gods know me.
शक्र उवाच ।
किमिदं त्वं मम कृते उताहो बलिनः कृते ।
दुःसहे विजहास्येनं चिरसंवासिनी सती ॥९॥
9. śakra uvāca ,
kimidaṁ tvaṁ mama kṛte utāho balinaḥ kṛte ,
duḥsahe vijahāsyenaṁ cirasaṁvāsinī satī.
9. śakra uvāca | kim idam tvam mama kṛte uta āho balinaḥ
kṛte | duḥsahe vijahāsi enam cirasaṃvāsinī satī
9. śakra uvāca duḥsahe cirasaṃvāsinī satī tvam kim
idam mama kṛte uta āho balinaḥ kṛte enam vijahāsi
9. Śakra said: 'O Duḥsahā, is it for my sake or for Bali's sake that you abandon him, you who have been his companion for a long time?'
श्रीरुवाच ।
न धाता न विधाता मां विदधाति कथंचन ।
कालस्तु शक्र पर्यायान्मैनं शक्रावमन्यथाः ॥१०॥
10. śrīruvāca ,
na dhātā na vidhātā māṁ vidadhāti kathaṁcana ,
kālastu śakra paryāyānmainaṁ śakrāvamanyathāḥ.
10. na dhātā na vidhātā mām vidadhāti kathaṃcana
kālaḥ tu śakra paryāyān mā enam śakra avamanyathāḥ
10. śrīḥ uvāca śakra na dhātā na vidhātā mām kathaṃcana
vidadhāti tu kālaḥ paryāyān mā enam śakra avamanyathāḥ
10. Śrī said: "Neither the Creator nor the Ordainer establishes me in any way. But O Indra, it is Time (kāla) that brings about changes. Therefore, O Indra, do not disrespect him (Bali)."
शक्र उवाच ।
कथं त्वया बलिस्त्यक्तः किमर्थं वा शिखण्डिनि ।
कथं च मां न जह्यास्त्वं तन्मे ब्रूहि शुचिस्मिते ॥११॥
11. śakra uvāca ,
kathaṁ tvayā balistyaktaḥ kimarthaṁ vā śikhaṇḍini ,
kathaṁ ca māṁ na jahyāstvaṁ tanme brūhi śucismite.
11. śakra uvāca katham tvayā baliḥ tyaktaḥ kim artham vā
śikhaṇḍini katham ca mām na jahyāḥ tvam tat me brūhi śucismite
11. śakra uvāca śikhaṇḍini baliḥ tvayā katham vā kim artham
tyaktaḥ ca tvam mām katham na jahyāḥ tat me brūhi śucismite
11. Indra said: "O Śikhaṇḍinī, how or why was Bali abandoned by you? And how is it that you would not abandon me? Tell me that, O pure-smiling one."
श्रीरुवाच ।
सत्ये स्थितास्मि दाने च व्रते तपसि चैव हि ।
पराक्रमे च धर्मे च पराचीनस्ततो बलिः ॥१२॥
12. śrīruvāca ,
satye sthitāsmi dāne ca vrate tapasi caiva hi ,
parākrame ca dharme ca parācīnastato baliḥ.
12. śrīḥ uvāca satye sthitā asmi dāne ca vrate tapasi ca
eva hi parākrame ca dharme ca parācīnaḥ tataḥ baliḥ
12. śrīḥ uvāca satye dāne ca vrate tapasi ca eva hi
parākrame ca dharme ca sthitā asmi tataḥ baliḥ parācīnaḥ
12. Śrī said: "I am established in truth, in giving (dāna), in vows, in spiritual discipline (tapas), and indeed, in valor and in righteousness (dharma). Therefore, Bali has turned away from me."
ब्रह्मण्योऽयं सदा भूत्वा सत्यवादी जितेन्द्रियः ।
अभ्यसूयद्ब्राह्मणान्वै उच्छिष्टश्चास्पृशद्घृतम् ॥१३॥
13. brahmaṇyo'yaṁ sadā bhūtvā satyavādī jitendriyaḥ ,
abhyasūyadbrāhmaṇānvai ucchiṣṭaścāspṛśadghṛtam.
13. brāhmaṇyaḥ ayam sadā bhūtvā satyavādī jitendriyaḥ
abhyasūyat brāhmaṇān vai ucchiṣṭaḥ ca aspṛśat ghṛtam
13. ayam sadā brāhmaṇyaḥ satyavādī jitendriyaḥ bhūtvā
vai brāhmaṇān abhyasūyat ca ucchiṣṭaḥ ghṛtam aspṛśat
13. Though he (Bali) was always devoted to Brahmins, truthful, and self-controlled (jitendriya), he nonetheless envied Brahmins. Moreover, while ritually impure (ucchiṣṭa) after eating, he touched clarified butter (ghṛta).
यज्ञशीलः पुरा भूत्वा मामेव यजतेत्ययम् ।
प्रोवाच लोकान्मूढात्मा कालेनोपनिपीडितः ॥१४॥
14. yajñaśīlaḥ purā bhūtvā māmeva yajatetyayam ,
provāca lokānmūḍhātmā kālenopanipīḍitaḥ.
14. yajñaśīlaḥ purā bhūtvā mām eva yajate iti ayam
provāca lokān mūḍhātmā kālena upanipīḍitaḥ
14. Having previously been diligent in performing Vedic rituals (yajña), this foolish person (mūḍhātmā), oppressed by time, told the people, "Worship me only!"
अपाकृता ततः शक्र त्वयि वत्स्यामि वासव ।
अप्रमत्तेन धार्यास्मि तपसा विक्रमेण च ॥१५॥
15. apākṛtā tataḥ śakra tvayi vatsyāmi vāsava ,
apramattena dhāryāsmi tapasā vikrameṇa ca.
15. apākṛtā tataḥ śakra tvayi vatsyāmi vāsava
apramattena dhāryā asmi tapasā vikrameṇa ca
15. śakra vāsava tataḥ apākṛtā tvayi vatsyāmi
apramattena tapasā vikrameṇa ca dhāryā asmi
15. "O Śakra, O Vāsava, having been abandoned, I will now reside with you. I must be sustained by diligence, by spiritual austerity (tapas), and by valor."
शक्र उवाच ।
अस्ति देवमनुष्येषु सर्वभूतेषु वा पुमान् ।
यस्त्वामेको विषहितुं शक्नुयात्कमलालये ॥१६॥
16. śakra uvāca ,
asti devamanuṣyeṣu sarvabhūteṣu vā pumān ,
yastvāmeko viṣahituṁ śaknuyātkamalālaye.
16. śakra uvāca asti devamanuṣyeṣu sarvabhūteṣu vā
pumān yaḥ tvām ekaḥ viṣahitum śaknuyāt kamalālaye
16. śakra uvāca kamalālaye devamanuṣyeṣu sarvabhūteṣu
vā yaḥ ekaḥ tvām viṣahitum śaknuyāt pumān asti
16. Śakra said: "Is there any being among gods, humans, or all creatures who alone would be capable of tolerating you, O dweller of the lotus (kamalālaya)?"
श्रीरुवाच ।
नैव देवो न गन्धर्वो नासुरो न च राक्षसः ।
यो मामेको विषहितुं शक्तः कश्चित्पुरंदर ॥१७॥
17. śrīruvāca ,
naiva devo na gandharvo nāsuro na ca rākṣasaḥ ,
yo māmeko viṣahituṁ śaktaḥ kaścitpuraṁdara.
17. śrīḥ uvāca na eva devaḥ na gandharvaḥ na asuraḥ na ca
rākṣasaḥ yaḥ mām ekaḥ viṣahitum śaktaḥ kaścit purandara
17. śrīḥ uvāca purandara na eva devaḥ na gandharvaḥ na asuraḥ
na ca rākṣasaḥ yaḥ ekaḥ mām viṣahitum kaścit śaktaḥ
17. Śrī said: "Indeed, O destroyer of cities (purandara), there is no god, nor Gandharva, nor Asura, nor Rākṣasa who is capable of enduring me alone."
शक्र उवाच ।
तिष्ठेथा मयि नित्यं त्वं यथा तद्ब्रूहि मे शुभे ।
तत्करिष्यामि ते वाक्यमृतं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१८॥
18. śakra uvāca ,
tiṣṭhethā mayi nityaṁ tvaṁ yathā tadbrūhi me śubhe ,
tatkariṣyāmi te vākyamṛtaṁ tvaṁ vaktumarhasi.
18. śakraḥ uvāca | tiṣṭhethāḥ mayi nityam tvam yathā tat brūhi
me śubhe | tat kariṣyāmi te vākyamṛtam tvam vaktum arhasi
18. śakraḥ uvāca śubhe,
tvam mayi nityam yathā tiṣṭhethāḥ tat me brūhi.
aham te vākyamṛtam tat kariṣyāmi.
tvam vaktum arhasi.
18. Indra said: "O beautiful one, tell me how you may always reside in me. I will fulfill your truthful command. You are worthy to speak."
श्रीरुवाच ।
स्थास्यामि नित्यं देवेन्द्र यथा त्वयि निबोध तत् ।
विधिना वेददृष्टेन चतुर्धा विभजस्व माम् ॥१९॥
19. śrīruvāca ,
sthāsyāmi nityaṁ devendra yathā tvayi nibodha tat ,
vidhinā vedadṛṣṭena caturdhā vibhajasva mām.
19. śrīḥ uvāca | sthāsyāmi nityam devendra yathā tvayi
nibodha tat | vidhinā vedadṛṣṭena caturdhā vibhajasva mām
19. śrīḥ uvāca devendra,
yathā aham tvayi nityam sthāsyāmi,
tat nibodha.
vedadṛṣṭena vidhinā mām caturdhā vibhajasva.
19. Śrī said: "O king of gods (Devendra), understand how I will always reside in you: by the method prescribed in the Vedas, divide me into four parts."
शक्र उवाच ।
अहं वै त्वा निधास्यामि यथाशक्ति यथाबलम् ।
न तु मेऽतिक्रमः स्याद्वै सदा लक्ष्मि तवान्तिके ॥२०॥
20. śakra uvāca ,
ahaṁ vai tvā nidhāsyāmi yathāśakti yathābalam ,
na tu me'tikramaḥ syādvai sadā lakṣmi tavāntike.
20. śakraḥ uvāca | aham vai tvā nidhāsyāmi yathāśakti yathābalam
| na tu me atikramaḥ syāt vai sadā lakṣmi tava antike
20. śakraḥ uvāca aham vai yathāśakti yathābalam tvā nidhāsyāmi.
lakṣmi,
sadā me tava antike atikramaḥ na syāt vai.
20. Indra said: "Indeed, I will establish you (in myself) according to my power and strength. O Lakṣmī, may there never be any transgression from me in your presence."
भूमिरेव मनुष्येषु धारणी भूतभाविनी ।
सा ते पादं तितिक्षेत समर्था हीति मे मतिः ॥२१॥
21. bhūmireva manuṣyeṣu dhāraṇī bhūtabhāvinī ,
sā te pādaṁ titikṣeta samarthā hīti me matiḥ.
21. bhūmiḥ eva manuṣyeṣu dhāraṇī bhūtabhāvinī | sā
te pādam titikṣeta samarthā hi iti me matiḥ
21. manuṣyeṣu bhūmiḥ eva bhūtabhāvinī dhāraṇī (asti).
sā te pādam titikṣeta.
hi (yatas) sā samarthā iti me matiḥ.
21. Among humans, it is only the Earth, the sustainer of all beings, past and future. She should indeed tolerate your foot, for she is capable; this is my opinion.
श्रीरुवाच ।
एष मे निहितः पादो योऽयं भूमौ प्रतिष्ठितः ।
द्वितीयं शक्र पादं मे तस्मात्सुनिहितं कुरु ॥२२॥
22. śrīruvāca ,
eṣa me nihitaḥ pādo yo'yaṁ bhūmau pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
dvitīyaṁ śakra pādaṁ me tasmātsunihitaṁ kuru.
22. śrīḥ uvāca eṣaḥ me nihitaḥ pādaḥ yaḥ ayam bhūmau
pratiṣṭhitaḥ dvitīyam śakra pādam me tasmāt sunihitam kuru
22. śrīḥ uvāca eṣaḥ me pādaḥ nihitaḥ yaḥ ayam bhūmau
pratiṣṭhitaḥ tasmāt śakra me dvitīyam pādam sunihitam kuru
22. Śrī said: "This foot of mine, which is established on the earth, is already set. Therefore, O Śakra, please place my second foot securely."
शक्र उवाच ।
आप एव मनुष्येषु द्रवन्त्यः परिचारिकाः ।
तास्ते पादं तितिक्षन्तामलमापस्तितिक्षितुम् ॥२३॥
23. śakra uvāca ,
āpa eva manuṣyeṣu dravantyaḥ paricārikāḥ ,
tāste pādaṁ titikṣantāmalamāpastitikṣitum.
23. śakraḥ uvāca āpaḥ eva manuṣyeṣu dravantyaḥ paricārikāḥ
tāḥ te pādam titikṣantām alam āpaḥ titikṣitum
23. śakraḥ uvāca āpaḥ eva manuṣyeṣu dravantyaḥ paricārikāḥ
tāḥ te pādam titikṣantām āpaḥ titikṣitum alam
23. Śakra said: "Indeed, the flowing waters serve humanity. May those (waters) endure your foot; the waters are well capable of enduring (it)."
श्रीरुवाच ।
एष मे निहितः पादो योऽयमप्सु प्रतिष्ठितः ।
तृतीयं शक्र पादं मे तस्मात्सुनिहितं कुरु ॥२४॥
24. śrīruvāca ,
eṣa me nihitaḥ pādo yo'yamapsu pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
tṛtīyaṁ śakra pādaṁ me tasmātsunihitaṁ kuru.
24. śrīḥ uvāca eṣaḥ me nihitaḥ pādaḥ yaḥ ayam apsu
pratiṣṭhitaḥ tṛtīyam śakra pādam me tasmāt sunihitam kuru
24. śrīḥ uvāca eṣaḥ me pādaḥ nihitaḥ yaḥ ayam apsu
pratiṣṭhitaḥ tasmāt śakra me tṛtīyam pādam sunihitam kuru
24. Śrī said: "This foot of mine, which is established in the waters, is already set. Therefore, O Śakra, please place my third foot securely."
शक्र उवाच ।
यस्मिन्देवाश्च यज्ञाश्च यस्मिन्वेदाः प्रतिष्ठिताः ।
तृतीयं पादमग्निस्ते सुधृतं धारयिष्यति ॥२५॥
25. śakra uvāca ,
yasmindevāśca yajñāśca yasminvedāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ ,
tṛtīyaṁ pādamagniste sudhṛtaṁ dhārayiṣyati.
25. śakraḥ uvāca yasmin devāḥ ca yajñāḥ ca yasmin vedāḥ
pratiṣṭhitāḥ tṛtīyam pādam agniḥ te sudhṛtam dhārayiṣyati
25. śakraḥ uvāca te tṛtīyam pādam agniḥ sudhṛtam dhārayiṣyati
yasmin devāḥ ca yajñāḥ ca yasmin vedāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ
25. Śakra said: "Agni (Fire god) will firmly hold your third foot, in which the gods and sacrificial rituals (yajña) reside, and in which the Vedas are established."
श्रीरुवाच ।
एष मे निहितः पादो योऽयमग्नौ प्रतिष्ठितः ।
चतुर्थं शक्र पादं मे तस्मात्सुनिहितं कुरु ॥२६॥
26. śrīruvāca ,
eṣa me nihitaḥ pādo yo'yamagnau pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
caturthaṁ śakra pādaṁ me tasmātsunihitaṁ kuru.
26. śrīḥ uvāca eṣaḥ me nihitaḥ pādaḥ yaḥ ayam agnau
pratiṣṭhitaḥ caturtham śakra pādam me tasmāt sunihitam kuru
26. śrīḥ uvāca he śakra eṣaḥ me pādaḥ yaḥ ayam agnau pratiṣṭhitaḥ
nihitaḥ tasmāt me caturtham pādam sunihitam kuru
26. Śrī said: "This foot of mine is already placed, that which is established in the fire. Therefore, O Śakra, make my fourth foot well-placed."
शक्र उवाच ।
ये वै सन्तो मनुष्येषु ब्रह्मण्याः सत्यवादिनः ।
ते ते पादं तितिक्षन्तामलं सन्तस्तितिक्षितुम् ॥२७॥
27. śakra uvāca ,
ye vai santo manuṣyeṣu brahmaṇyāḥ satyavādinaḥ ,
te te pādaṁ titikṣantāmalaṁ santastitikṣitum.
27. śakraḥ uvāca ye vai santaḥ manuṣyeṣu brahmaṇyāḥ
satyavādinaḥ te te pādam titikṣantām alam santaḥ titikṣitum
27. śakraḥ uvāca vai ye santaḥ manuṣyeṣu brahmaṇyāḥ
satyavādinaḥ te te pādam titikṣantām santaḥ alam titikṣitum
27. Śakra said: "Indeed, those righteous and truthful persons among humans, who are devoted to the sacred (brahmaṇyāḥ), may they endure your foot. The good are certainly capable of enduring."
श्रीरुवाच ।
एष मे निहितः पादो योऽयं सत्सु प्रतिष्ठितः ।
एवं विनिहितां शक्र भूतेषु परिधत्स्व माम् ॥२८॥
28. śrīruvāca ,
eṣa me nihitaḥ pādo yo'yaṁ satsu pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
evaṁ vinihitāṁ śakra bhūteṣu paridhatsva mām.

28. Śrī said: "This foot of mine is placed, which is established among the good. Therefore, O Śakra, distribute me, thus established, among all beings."
शक्र उवाच ।
भूतानामिह वै यस्त्वा मया विनिहितां सतीम् ।
उपहन्यात्स मे द्विष्यात्तथा शृण्वन्तु मे वचः ॥२९॥
29. śakra uvāca ,
bhūtānāmiha vai yastvā mayā vinihitāṁ satīm ,
upahanyātsa me dviṣyāttathā śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ.

satīm upahanyāt saḥ me dviṣyāt tathā śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ

29. Śakra said: "Whoever among beings here indeed harms you, who are established by me, he shall become my enemy. Therefore, let them hear my words."
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततस्त्यक्तः श्रिया राजा दैत्यानां बलिरब्रवीत् ।
यावत्पुरस्तात्प्रतपेत्तावद्वै दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥३०॥
30. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tatastyaktaḥ śriyā rājā daityānāṁ balirabravīt ,
yāvatpurastātpratapettāvadvai dakṣiṇāṁ diśam.

30. Bhishma said: Then, King Bali of the Daityas, abandoned by his prosperity (śrī), spoke: "As long as it (the sun) shines forth from the east, so long it indeed illuminates the southern direction...
पश्चिमां तावदेवापि तथोदीचीं दिवाकरः ।
तथा मध्यंदिने सूर्यो अस्तमेति यदा तदा ।
पुनर्देवासुरं युद्धं भावि जेतास्मि वस्तदा ॥३१॥
31. paścimāṁ tāvadevāpi tathodīcīṁ divākaraḥ ,
tathā madhyaṁdine sūryo astameti yadā tadā ,
punardevāsuraṁ yuddhaṁ bhāvi jetāsmi vastadā.
31. paścimām tāvat eva api tathā udīcīm
divākaraḥ | tathā madhyaṃdine sūryaḥ
astam eti yadā tadā | punar
devāsuram yuddham bhāvi jetā asmi vaḥ tadā
31. (Baliḥ abravīt continues) divākaraḥ paścimām
tāvat eva api tathā udīcīm (pratapet) tathā
yadā sūryaḥ madhyaṃdine astam eti tadā punar
devāsuram yuddham bhāvi tadā aham vaḥ jetā asmi
31. ...and likewise the western and northern directions. Similarly, when the sun (sūrya) sets at midday, then a battle between the gods and Asuras (devāsuram yuddham) will certainly occur again, and at that time, I shall be your conqueror.
सर्वाँल्लोकान्यदादित्य एकस्थस्तापयिष्यति ।
तदा देवासुरे युद्धे जेताहं त्वां शतक्रतो ॥३२॥
32. sarvāँllokānyadāditya ekasthastāpayiṣyati ,
tadā devāsure yuddhe jetāhaṁ tvāṁ śatakrato.
32. sarvān lokān yadā ādityaḥ ekasthaḥ tāpayiṣyati
| tadā devāsure yuddhe jetā aham tvām śatakrato
32. yadā ādityaḥ ekasthaḥ sarvān lokān tāpayiṣyati tadā
devāsure yuddhe aham tvām jetā (bhavāmi) śatakrato
32. When the sun (āditya), standing in one place, will scorch all the worlds, then, in the battle between the gods and Asuras (devāsuram yuddham), I shall conquer you, O Indra (śatakratu).
शक्र उवाच ।
ब्रह्मणास्मि समादिष्टो न हन्तव्यो भवानिति ।
तेन तेऽहं बले वज्रं न विमुञ्चामि मूर्धनि ॥३३॥
33. śakra uvāca ,
brahmaṇāsmi samādiṣṭo na hantavyo bhavāniti ,
tena te'haṁ bale vajraṁ na vimuñcāmi mūrdhani.
33. śakraḥ uvāca | brahmaṇā asmi samādiṣṭaḥ na hantavyaḥ bhavān
iti | tena te aham bale vajram na vimuñcāmi mūrdhani

33. Indra (Śakra) said: "I have been commanded by Brahma (brahman) not to kill you. Therefore, O Bali, I do not cast my thunderbolt (vajra) upon your head."
यथेष्टं गच्छ दैत्येन्द्र स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु महासुर ।
आदित्यो नावतपिता कदाचिन्मध्यतः स्थितः ॥३४॥
34. yatheṣṭaṁ gaccha daityendra svasti te'stu mahāsura ,
ādityo nāvatapitā kadācinmadhyataḥ sthitaḥ.
34. yatheṣṭam gaccha daityendra svasti te astu mahāsura
ādityaḥ na avatapitā kadācit madhyataḥ sthitaḥ
34. daityendra mahāsura yatheṣṭam gaccha te svasti astu
ādityaḥ madhyataḥ sthitaḥ kadācit na avatapitā
34. Go as you please, O king of demons, may there be well-being for you, great demon. The sun, when positioned at its zenith, is never scorching.
स्थापितो ह्यस्य समयः पूर्वमेव स्वयंभुवा ।
अजस्रं परियात्येष सत्येनावतपन्प्रजाः ॥३५॥
35. sthāpito hyasya samayaḥ pūrvameva svayaṁbhuvā ,
ajasraṁ pariyātyeṣa satyenāvatapanprajāḥ.
35. sthāpitaḥ hi asya samayaḥ pūrvam eva svayambhuvā
ajasram pariyāti eṣaḥ satyena avatapan prajāḥ
35. hi asya samayaḥ pūrvam eva svayambhuvā sthāpitaḥ
eṣaḥ ajasram satyena prajāḥ avatapan pariyāti
35. Indeed, its (the sun's) fixed course was established by Svayambhu (Brahman) himself long ago. This (sun) constantly moves, sustaining living beings by its inherent nature (dharma), emitting heat and light.
अयनं तस्य षण्मासा उत्तरं दक्षिणं तथा ।
येन संयाति लोकेषु शीतोष्णे विसृजन्रविः ॥३६॥
36. ayanaṁ tasya ṣaṇmāsā uttaraṁ dakṣiṇaṁ tathā ,
yena saṁyāti lokeṣu śītoṣṇe visṛjanraviḥ.
36. ayanam tasya ṣaṇmāsā uttaram dakṣiṇam tathā
yena saṃyāti lokeṣu śītoṣṇe visṛjan raviḥ
36. tasya ayanam uttaram dakṣiṇam tathā ṣaṇmāsā
yena raviḥ śītoṣṇe visṛjan lokeṣu saṃyāti
36. Its (the sun's) course spans six months, both northern and southern. Through this movement, the sun, by emitting cold and heat, travels across the worlds.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु दैत्येन्द्रो बलिरिन्द्रेण भारत ।
जगाम दक्षिणामाशामुदीचीं तु पुरंदरः ॥३७॥
37. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktastu daityendro balirindreṇa bhārata ,
jagāma dakṣiṇāmāśāmudīcīṁ tu puraṁdaraḥ.

bhārata jagāma dakṣiṇām āśām udīcīm tu purandaraḥ

37. Bhishma said: 'O Bhārata, thus addressed by Indra, Bali, the king of demons, went to the southern quarter, while Purandara (Indra) proceeded to the northern quarter.'
इत्येतद्बलिना गीतमनहंकारसंज्ञितम् ।
वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सहस्राक्षः खमेवारुरुहे तदा ॥३८॥
38. ityetadbalinā gītamanahaṁkārasaṁjñitam ,
vākyaṁ śrutvā sahasrākṣaḥ khamevāruruhe tadā.
38. iti etat balinā gītam anahaṅkārasaṃjñitam
vākyam śrutvā sahasrākṣaḥ kham eva āruruhe tadā
38. tadā sahasrākṣaḥ balinā gītam anahaṅkārasaṃjñitam
iti etat vākyam śrutvā kham eva āruruhe
38. Having heard this speech, spoken by Bali and known as 'devoid of ego (ahaṅkāra)', the thousand-eyed Indra then ascended into the sky.
