बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
त्वमग्ने सर्वदेवानां मुखं त्वमसि हव्यवाट् ।
त्वमन्तः सर्वभूतानां गूढश्चरसि साक्षिवत् ॥१॥
1. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
tvamagne sarvadevānāṁ mukhaṁ tvamasi havyavāṭ ,
tvamantaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ gūḍhaścarasi sākṣivat.
1. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca tvam agne sarvadevānām mukham tvam asi
havyavāṭ tvam antaḥ sarvabhūtānām gūḍhaḥ carasi sākṣivat
1. Bṛhaspati said: "O Agni, you are the mouth of all the gods; you are the bearer of oblations. You move secretly within all beings, like a witness."
त्वामाहुरेकं कवयस्त्वामाहुस्त्रिविधं पुनः ।
त्वया त्यक्तं जगच्चेदं सद्यो नश्येद्धुताशन ॥२॥
2. tvāmāhurekaṁ kavayastvāmāhustrividhaṁ punaḥ ,
tvayā tyaktaṁ jagaccedaṁ sadyo naśyeddhutāśana.
2. tvām āhuḥ ekam kavayaḥ tvām āhuḥ trividham punaḥ
tvayā tyaktam jagat ca idam sadyaḥ naśyet hutāśana
2. The sages (kavayaḥ) call you one, and again they call you threefold. If this entire world (jagat) were forsaken by you, O consumer of oblations (hutāśana), it would immediately perish.
कृत्वा तुभ्यं नमो विप्राः स्वकर्मविजितां गतिम् ।
गच्छन्ति सह पत्नीभिः सुतैरपि च शाश्वतीम् ॥३॥
3. kṛtvā tubhyaṁ namo viprāḥ svakarmavijitāṁ gatim ,
gacchanti saha patnībhiḥ sutairapi ca śāśvatīm.
3. kṛtvā tubhyam namaḥ viprāḥ svakarmavijitām gatim
gacchanti saha patnībhiḥ sutaiḥ api ca śāśvatīm
3. O Brahmins, having offered obeisance to you, they attain an eternal destination, which they have won through their own actions (karma), along with their wives and sons.
त्वमेवाग्ने हव्यवाहस्त्वमेव परमं हविः ।
यजन्ति सत्रैस्त्वामेव यज्ञैश्च परमाध्वरे ॥४॥
4. tvamevāgne havyavāhastvameva paramaṁ haviḥ ,
yajanti satraistvāmeva yajñaiśca paramādhvare.
4. tvam eva agne havyavāhaḥ tvam eva paramam haviḥ
yajanti satraiḥ tvām eva yajñaiḥ ca paramādhvare
4. agne tvam eva havyavāhaḥ tvam eva paramam haviḥ
satraiḥ yajñaiḥ ca paramādhvare tvām eva yajanti
4. O Agni, you alone are the carrier of oblations, and you alone are the supreme oblation. People worship you alone with various extended Vedic rituals (yajña), and with other Vedic rituals (yajña) in the highest Vedic ritual (yajña).
सृष्ट्वा लोकांस्त्रीनिमान्हव्यवाह प्राप्ते काले पचसि पुनः समिद्धः ।
सर्वस्यास्य भुवनस्य प्रसूतिस्त्वमेवाग्ने भवसि पुनः प्रतिष्ठा ॥५॥
5. sṛṣṭvā lokāṁstrīnimānhavyavāha; prāpte kāle pacasi punaḥ samiddhaḥ ,
sarvasyāsya bhuvanasya prasūti;stvamevāgne bhavasi punaḥ pratiṣṭhā.
5. sṛṣṭvā lokān trīn imān havyavāha
prāpte kāle pacasi punaḥ samiddhaḥ
sarvasya asya bhuvanasya prasūtiḥ
tvam eva agne bhavasi punaḥ pratiṣṭhā
5. O Agni, you who bear the oblations, having created these three worlds, when the appointed time arrives, you consume them again, fully kindled. You alone, O Agni, are the origin of all this existence, and again, you are its firm foundation.
त्वामग्ने जलदानाहुर्विद्युतश्च त्वमेव हि ।
दहन्ति सर्वभूतानि त्वत्तो निष्क्रम्य हायनाः ॥६॥
6. tvāmagne jaladānāhurvidyutaśca tvameva hi ,
dahanti sarvabhūtāni tvatto niṣkramya hāyanāḥ.
6. tvām agne jaladān āhuḥ vidyutaḥ ca tvam eva hi
dahanti sarvabhūtāni tvattaḥ niṣkramya hāyanāḥ
6. O Agni, they call you the rain-bearing clouds, and indeed, you are also the lightning. Destructive fires, manifested as 'years' (which bring about decay and end), having originated from you, consume all beings.
त्वय्यापो निहिताः सर्वास्त्वयि सर्वमिदं जगत् ।
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचित्त्रिषु लोकेषु पावक ॥७॥
7. tvayyāpo nihitāḥ sarvāstvayi sarvamidaṁ jagat ,
na te'styaviditaṁ kiṁcittriṣu lokeṣu pāvaka.
7. tvayi āpaḥ nihitāḥ sarvāḥ tvayi sarvam idam jagat
na te asti aviditam kiñcit triṣu lokeṣu pāvaka
7. All waters reside in you, and this entire world exists within you. Nothing in the three worlds remains unknown to you, O purifier (pāvaka).
स्वयोनिं भजते सर्वो विशस्वापोऽविशङ्कितः ।
अहं त्वां वर्धयिष्यामि ब्राह्मैर्मन्त्रैः सनातनैः ॥८॥
8. svayoniṁ bhajate sarvo viśasvāpo'viśaṅkitaḥ ,
ahaṁ tvāṁ vardhayiṣyāmi brāhmairmantraiḥ sanātanaiḥ.
8. svayonim bhajate sarvaḥ viśasva āpaḥ aviśaṅkitaḥ
aham tvām vardhayiṣyāmi brāhmaiḥ mantraiḥ sanātanaiḥ
8. Everyone seeks their own origin. Therefore, enter the waters without hesitation. I will nourish you with eternal (sanātana) sacred (brāhma) incantations (mantra).
शल्य उवाच ।
एवं स्तुतो हव्यवाहो भगवान्कविरुत्तमः ।
बृहस्पतिमथोवाच प्रीतिमान्वाक्यमुत्तमम् ।
दर्शयिष्यामि ते शक्रं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥९॥
9. śalya uvāca ,
evaṁ stuto havyavāho bhagavānkaviruttamaḥ ,
bṛhaspatimathovāca prītimānvākyamuttamam ,
darśayiṣyāmi te śakraṁ satyametadbravīmi te.
9. śalya uvāca evam stutaḥ havyavāhaḥ
bhagavān kaviḥ uttamaḥ bṛhaspatim atha
uvāca prītimān vākyam uttamam darśayiṣyāmi
te śakram satyam etat bravīmi te
9. Śalya said: Thus praised, the revered (bhagavān) Fire (havyavāha), the supreme seer, then, being pleased, spoke these excellent words to Bṛhaspati: 'I will show you Śakra (Indra); this truth I declare to you.'
प्रविश्यापस्ततो वह्निः ससमुद्राः सपल्वलाः ।
आजगाम सरस्तच्च गूढो यत्र शतक्रतुः ॥१०॥
10. praviśyāpastato vahniḥ sasamudrāḥ sapalvalāḥ ,
ājagāma sarastacca gūḍho yatra śatakratuḥ.
10. praviśya āpaḥ tataḥ vahniḥ sasamudrāḥ sapalvalāḥ
ājagāma saraḥ tat ca gūḍhaḥ yatra śatakratuḥ
10. Having entered the waters, including the oceans and ponds, Fire (vahni) then arrived at that particular lake where Indra (śatakratu) was hidden.
अथ तत्रापि पद्मानि विचिन्वन्भरतर्षभ ।
अन्वपश्यत्स देवेन्द्रं बिसमध्यगतं स्थितम् ॥११॥
11. atha tatrāpi padmāni vicinvanbharatarṣabha ,
anvapaśyatsa devendraṁ bisamadhyagataṁ sthitam.
11. atha tatra api padmāni vicinvan bharatarṣabha
anvapaśyat sa devendraṃ bisamadhyagataṃ sthitam
11. Then, O best of Bharatas, while searching for lotuses even in that place, he perceived Indra, the lord of gods, situated within the center of a lotus fiber.
आगत्य च ततस्तूर्णं तमाचष्ट बृहस्पतेः ।
अणुमात्रेण वपुषा पद्मतन्त्वाश्रितं प्रभुम् ॥१२॥
12. āgatya ca tatastūrṇaṁ tamācaṣṭa bṛhaspateḥ ,
aṇumātreṇa vapuṣā padmatantvāśritaṁ prabhum.
12. āgatya ca tataḥ tūrṇaṃ tam ācaṣṭa bṛhaspateḥ
aṇumātreṇa vapuṣā padmatantvāśritaṃ prabhum
12. And having quickly arrived from there, he reported to Bṛhaspati about that lord, who was reposing on a lotus fiber and possessed a body of atomic size.
गत्वा देवर्षिगन्धर्वैः सहितोऽथ बृहस्पतिः ।
पुराणैः कर्मभिर्देवं तुष्टाव बलसूदनम् ॥१३॥
13. gatvā devarṣigandharvaiḥ sahito'tha bṛhaspatiḥ ,
purāṇaiḥ karmabhirdevaṁ tuṣṭāva balasūdanam.
13. gatvā devarṣigandharvaiḥ sahitaḥ atha bṛhaspatiḥ
purāṇaiḥ karmabhiḥ devaṃ tuṣṭāva balasūdanam
13. Then, having gone, Bṛhaspati, accompanied by divine sages and Gandharvas, praised that god, the slayer of Bala, recounting his ancient deeds (karma).
महासुरो हतः शक्र नमुचिर्दारुणस्त्वया ।
शम्बरश्च बलश्चैव तथोभौ घोरविक्रमौ ॥१४॥
14. mahāsuro hataḥ śakra namucirdāruṇastvayā ,
śambaraśca balaścaiva tathobhau ghoravikramau.
14. mahāasuraḥ hataḥ śakra namuciḥ dāruṇaḥ tvayā
śambaraḥ ca balaḥ ca eva tathā ubhau ghoravikramau
14. O Śakra, that fierce, great Asura Namuci was slain by you; likewise, both Śambara and Bala, who possessed terrible might, were also (slain by you).
शतक्रतो विवर्धस्व सर्वाञ्शत्रून्निषूदय ।
उत्तिष्ठ वज्रिन्संपश्य देवर्षींश्च समागतान् ॥१५॥
15. śatakrato vivardhasva sarvāñśatrūnniṣūdaya ,
uttiṣṭha vajrinsaṁpaśya devarṣīṁśca samāgatān.
15. śatakrato vivardhasva sarvān śatrūn niṣūdaya
uttiṣṭha vajrin saṃpaśya devarṣīn ca samāgatān
15. śatakrato vivardhasva sarvān śatrūn niṣūdaya
vajrin uttiṣṭha ca samāgatān devarṣīn saṃpaśya
15. O Śatakratu (Indra), prosper and annihilate all your enemies. Arise, O Wielder of the Vajra (Indra), and behold the divine sages who have assembled.
महेन्द्र दानवान्हत्वा लोकास्त्रातास्त्वया विभो ।
अपां फेनं समासाद्य विष्णुतेजोपबृंहितम् ।
त्वया वृत्रो हतः पूर्वं देवराज जगत्पते ॥१६॥
16. mahendra dānavānhatvā lokāstrātāstvayā vibho ,
apāṁ phenaṁ samāsādya viṣṇutejopabṛṁhitam ,
tvayā vṛtro hataḥ pūrvaṁ devarāja jagatpate.
16. mahendra dānavān hatvā lokāḥ trātāḥ
tvayā vibho apām phenam samāsādya
viṣṇutejas upabṛṃhitam tvayā vṛtraḥ
hataḥ pūrvam devarāja jagatpate
16. O great Indra (Mahendra), O all-pervading lord (vibhu)! Having slain the Dānavas, the worlds were saved by you. Earlier, O king of gods (devarāja), lord of the world (jagatpati), you killed Vṛtra by taking the foam of the waters, which was empowered by Viṣṇu's energy.
त्वं सर्वभूतेषु वरेण्य ईड्यस्त्वया समं विद्यते नेह भूतम् ।
त्वया धार्यन्ते सर्वभूतानि शक्र त्वं देवानां महिमानं चकर्थ ॥१७॥
17. tvaṁ sarvabhūteṣu vareṇya īḍya;stvayā samaṁ vidyate neha bhūtam ,
tvayā dhāryante sarvabhūtāni śakra; tvaṁ devānāṁ mahimānaṁ cakartha.
17. tvam sarvabhūteṣu vareṇyaḥ īḍyaḥ
tvayā samam vidyate na iha bhūtam
tvayā dhāryante sarvabhūtāni śakra
tvam devānām mahimānam cakartha
17. You are the most excellent and praiseworthy among all beings. There exists no being equal to you. O Śakra, all beings are sustained by you. You established the greatness of the gods.
पाहि देवान्सलोकांश्च महेन्द्र बलमाप्नुहि ।
एवं संस्तूयमानश्च सोऽवर्धत शनैः शनैः ॥१८॥
18. pāhi devānsalokāṁśca mahendra balamāpnuhi ,
evaṁ saṁstūyamānaśca so'vardhata śanaiḥ śanaiḥ.
18. pāhi devān salokān ca mahendra balam āpnuhi evam
saṃstūyamānaḥ ca saḥ avardhata śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
18. O great Indra (Mahendra), protect the gods and their worlds! Attain strength! Thus, being greatly praised, he gradually grew in power.
स्वं चैव वपुरास्थाय बभूव स बलान्वितः ।
अब्रवीच्च गुरुं देवो बृहस्पतिमुपस्थितम् ॥१९॥
19. svaṁ caiva vapurāsthāya babhūva sa balānvitaḥ ,
abravīcca guruṁ devo bṛhaspatimupasthitam.
19. svam ca eva vapuḥ āsthāya babhūva saḥ balānvitaḥ
abravīt ca gurum devaḥ bṛhaspatim upasthitam
19. And having resumed his own form, he became powerful. The god (Indra) then spoke to his preceptor, Brihaspati, who was standing before him.
किं कार्यमवशिष्टं वो हतस्त्वाष्ट्रो महासुरः ।
वृत्रश्च सुमहाकायो ग्रस्तुं लोकानियेष यः ॥२०॥
20. kiṁ kāryamavaśiṣṭaṁ vo hatastvāṣṭro mahāsuraḥ ,
vṛtraśca sumahākāyo grastuṁ lokāniyeṣa yaḥ.
20. kim kāryam avaśiṣṭam vaḥ hataḥ tvāṣṭraḥ mahāsuraḥ
vṛtraḥ ca sumahākāyaḥ grastum lokān iyeṣa yaḥ
20. What work (kārya) remains for you now? The great asura, son of Tvaṣṭā (Viśvarūpa), has been slain, and Vṛtra, who possessed an enormous body and sought to swallow the worlds (lokas), has also been slain.
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
मानुषो नहुषो राजा देवर्षिगणतेजसा ।
देवराज्यमनुप्राप्तः सर्वान्नो बाधते भृशम् ॥२१॥
21. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
mānuṣo nahuṣo rājā devarṣigaṇatejasā ,
devarājyamanuprāptaḥ sarvānno bādhate bhṛśam.
21. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca mānuṣaḥ nahuṣaḥ rājā devarṣigaṇatejasā
devarājyam anuprāptaḥ sarvān naḥ bādhate bhṛśam
21. Brihaspati said: "The human king Nahuṣa, having attained the kingship of the gods (devarājya) through the spiritual power (tejas) of the groups of divine sages (devarṣigaṇa), greatly harasses all of us."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
कथं नु नहुषो राज्यं देवानां प्राप दुर्लभम् ।
तपसा केन वा युक्तः किंवीर्यो वा बृहस्पते ॥२२॥
22. indra uvāca ,
kathaṁ nu nahuṣo rājyaṁ devānāṁ prāpa durlabham ,
tapasā kena vā yuktaḥ kiṁvīryo vā bṛhaspate.
22. indraḥ uvāca katham nu nahuṣaḥ rājyam devānām prāpa
durlabham tapasā kena vā yuktaḥ kiṃvīryaḥ vā bṛhaspate
22. Indra said: "How indeed did Nahuṣa acquire the difficult-to-obtain kingship of the gods? With what kind of spiritual austerity (tapas) was he endowed, or what power (vīrya) does he possess, O Brihaspati?"
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
देवा भीताः शक्रमकामयन्त त्वया त्यक्तं महदैन्द्रं पदं तत् ।
तदा देवाः पितरोऽथर्षयश्च गन्धर्वसंघाश्च समेत्य सर्वे ॥२३॥
23. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
devā bhītāḥ śakramakāmayanta; tvayā tyaktaṁ mahadaindraṁ padaṁ tat ,
tadā devāḥ pitaro'tharṣayaśca; gandharvasaṁghāśca sametya sarve.
23. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca devāḥ bhītāḥ śakram
akāmayanta tvayā tyaktam mahat aindram
padam tat tadā devāḥ pitaraḥ atha ṛṣayaḥ
ca gandharvasaṃghāḥ ca sametya sarve
23. Bṛhaspati said: The gods, gripped by fear, no longer wished for Śakra for that great position of Indra which you had abandoned. Then, all the gods, ancestors, sages, and hosts of Gandharvas, having assembled...
गत्वाब्रुवन्नहुषं शक्र तत्र त्वं नो राजा भव भुवनस्य गोप्ता ।
तानब्रवीन्नहुषो नास्मि शक्त आप्यायध्वं तपसा तेजसा च ॥२४॥
24. gatvābruvannahuṣaṁ śakra tatra; tvaṁ no rājā bhava bhuvanasya goptā ,
tānabravīnnahuṣo nāsmi śakta; āpyāyadhvaṁ tapasā tejasā ca.
24. gatvā abruvan nahuṣam śakra tatra
tvam naḥ rājā bhava bhuvanasya
goptā tān abravīt nahuṣaḥ na asmi
śaktaḥ āpyāyadhvam tapasā tejasā ca
24. Having gone, they said to Nahuṣa: "O mighty one, you be our king there, the protector of the world." Nahuṣa said to them: "I am not capable. Strengthen me with your asceticism (tapas) and splendor."
एवमुक्तैर्वर्धितश्चापि देवै राजाभवन्नहुषो घोरवीर्यः ।
त्रैलोक्ये च प्राप्य राज्यं तपस्विनः कृत्वा वाहान्याति लोकान्दुरात्मा ॥२५॥
25. evamuktairvardhitaścāpi devai; rājābhavannahuṣo ghoravīryaḥ ,
trailokye ca prāpya rājyaṁ tapasvinaḥ; kṛtvā vāhānyāti lokāndurātmā.
25. evam uktaiḥ vardhitaḥ ca api devaiḥ
rājā abhavat nahuṣaḥ ghoravīryaḥ
trailokye ca prāpya rājyam tapasvinaḥ
kṛtvā vāhān yāti lokān durātmā
25. Thus addressed and strengthened by the gods, Nahuṣa, of formidable valor, became king. And having obtained dominion over the three worlds, that evil-minded one made ascetics (tapasvin) his vehicles and traversed the worlds.
तेजोहरं दृष्टिविषं सुघोरं मा त्वं पश्येर्नहुषं वै कदाचित् ।
देवाश्च सर्वे नहुषं भयार्ता न पश्यन्तो गूढरूपाश्चरन्ति ॥२६॥
26. tejoharaṁ dṛṣṭiviṣaṁ sughoraṁ; mā tvaṁ paśyernahuṣaṁ vai kadācit ,
devāśca sarve nahuṣaṁ bhayārtā; na paśyanto gūḍharūpāścaranti.
26. tejoharam dṛṣṭiviṣam sughoram mā
tvam paśyeḥ nahuṣam vai kadācit
devāḥ ca sarve nahuṣam bhayārtāḥ
na paśyantaḥ gūḍharūpāḥ caranti
26. (He is) one who steals splendor, whose gaze is poisonous, and extremely terrible. May you (Indra) never, ever look upon Nahuṣa! And all the gods, afflicted by fear of Nahuṣa, not looking at him, wander about in hidden forms.
शल्य उवाच ।
एवं वदत्यङ्गिरसां वरिष्ठे बृहस्पतौ लोकपालः कुबेरः ।
वैवस्वतश्चैव यमः पुराणो देवश्च सोमो वरुणश्चाजगाम ॥२७॥
27. śalya uvāca ,
evaṁ vadatyaṅgirasāṁ variṣṭhe; bṛhaspatau lokapālaḥ kuberaḥ ,
vaivasvataścaiva yamaḥ purāṇo; devaśca somo varuṇaścājagāma.
27. śalya uvāca evaṃ vadati aṅgirasāṃ
variṣṭhe bṛhaspatau lokapālaḥ kuberaḥ
vaivasvataḥ ca eva yamaḥ purāṇaḥ
devaḥ ca somaḥ varuṇaḥ ca ājagāma
27. Śalya said: As Bṛhaspati, the chief among the Aṅgirasas, was speaking thus, Kubera, the guardian of the world, and the ancient Yama, son of Vivasvat, and the god Soma, and Varuṇa arrived.
ते वै समागम्य महेन्द्रमूचुर्दिष्ट्या त्वाष्ट्रो निहतश्चैव वृत्रः ।
दिष्ट्या च त्वां कुशलिनमक्षतं च पश्यामो वै निहतारिं च शक्र ॥२८॥
28. te vai samāgamya mahendramūcu;rdiṣṭyā tvāṣṭro nihataścaiva vṛtraḥ ,
diṣṭyā ca tvāṁ kuśalinamakṣataṁ ca; paśyāmo vai nihatāriṁ ca śakra.
28. te vai samāgamya mahendram ūcuḥ
diṣṭyā tvāṣṭraḥ nihataḥ ca eva vṛtraḥ
diṣṭyā ca tvām kuśalinam akṣatam
ca paśyāmaḥ vai nihatārim ca śakra
28. Having assembled, they indeed said to Mahendra (Indra): 'Fortunately, Vṛtra, the son of Tvaṣṭā, has been slain! And fortunately, O Śakra, we see you safe, unharmed, and with your enemies vanquished!'
स तान्यथावत्प्रतिभाष्य शक्रः संचोदयन्नहुषस्यान्तरेण ।
राजा देवानां नहुषो घोररूपस्तत्र साह्यं दीयतां मे भवद्भिः ॥२९॥
29. sa tānyathāvatpratibhāṣya śakraḥ; saṁcodayannahuṣasyāntareṇa ,
rājā devānāṁ nahuṣo ghorarūpa;statra sāhyaṁ dīyatāṁ me bhavadbhiḥ.
29. sa tāni yathāvat pratibhāṣya śakraḥ
saṃcodayan nahuṣasya antareṇa
rājā devānām nahuṣaḥ ghorarūpaḥ
tatra sāhyam dīyatām me bhavadbhiḥ
29. Śakra (Indra), having appropriately answered them, then urged them, saying: 'Nahuṣa, who is terrible in form, is now the king of the gods. Therefore, let help be provided to me by you all in this matter.'
ते चाब्रुवन्नहुषो घोररूपो दृष्टीविषस्तस्य बिभीम देव ।
त्वं चेद्राजन्नहुषं पराजयेस्तद्वै वयं भागमर्हाम शक्र ॥३०॥
30. te cābruvannahuṣo ghorarūpo; dṛṣṭīviṣastasya bibhīma deva ,
tvaṁ cedrājannahuṣaṁ parājaye;stadvai vayaṁ bhāgamarhāma śakra.
30. te ca abruvan nahuṣaḥ ghorarūpaḥ
dṛṣṭīviṣaḥ tasya bibhīma deva
tvam cet rājan nahuṣam parājayeh
tat vai vayam bhāgam arhāma śakra
30. And they said, 'O God, O King, O Śakra! Nahuṣa is terrible in form and has a poisonous gaze; we fear him. If you should conquer Nahuṣa, then indeed we would be deserving of a share (of the reward or glory).'
इन्द्रोऽब्रवीद्भवतु भवानपां पतिर्यमः कुबेरश्च महाभिषेकम् ।
संप्राप्नुवन्त्वद्य सहैव तेन रिपुं जयामो नहुषं घोरदृष्टिम् ॥३१॥
31. indro'bravīdbhavatu bhavānapāṁ pati;ryamaḥ kuberaśca mahābhiṣekam ,
saṁprāpnuvantvadya sahaiva tena; ripuṁ jayāmo nahuṣaṁ ghoradṛṣṭim.
31. indraḥ abravīt bhavatu bhavān apām
patiḥ yamaḥ kuberaḥ ca mahābhiṣekam
samprāpnuvantu adya saha eva tena
ripum jayāmaḥ nahuṣam ghoradṛṣṭim
31. Indra said, "Let you (Varuṇa) become the lord of the waters, and let Yama and Kubera also attain a great consecration (abhiṣeka) today. With this, we shall conquer our enemy Nahuṣa, who possesses a terrifying gaze."
ततः शक्रं ज्वलनोऽप्याह भागं प्रयच्छ मह्यं तव साह्यं करिष्ये ।
तमाह शक्रो भविताग्ने तवापि ऐन्द्राग्नो वै भाग एको महाक्रतौ ॥३२॥
32. tataḥ śakraṁ jvalano'pyāha bhāgaṁ; prayaccha mahyaṁ tava sāhyaṁ kariṣye ,
tamāha śakro bhavitāgne tavāpi; aindrāgno vai bhāga eko mahākratau.
32. tataḥ śakram jvalanaḥ api āha bhāgam
prayaccha mahyam tava sāhyam kariṣye
tam āha śakraḥ bhavitā agne tava api
aindrāgnaḥ vai bhāgaḥ ekaḥ mahākratāu
32. Then, Agni (Jvalana) also said to Indra (Śakra), "Give a share to me; I will assist you." Indra said to him, "O Agni, there will be a share for you too. Indeed, a combined share (aindrāgna) in a great sacrifice belongs to both Indra and Agni."
एवं संचिन्त्य भगवान्महेन्द्रः पाकशासनः ।
कुबेरं सर्वयक्षाणां धनानां च प्रभुं तथा ॥३३॥
33. evaṁ saṁcintya bhagavānmahendraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ ,
kuberaṁ sarvayakṣāṇāṁ dhanānāṁ ca prabhuṁ tathā.
33. evam saṃcintya bhagavān mahendraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ
kuberam sarvayakṣāṇām dhanānām ca prabhum tathā
33. Having thus pondered, the divine Mahendra, the slayer of Pāka, made Kubera the lord of all Yakṣas and of wealth, and similarly...
वैवस्वतं पितॄणां च वरुणं चाप्यपां तथा ।
आधिपत्यं ददौ शक्रः सत्कृत्य वरदस्तदा ॥३४॥
34. vaivasvataṁ pitṝṇāṁ ca varuṇaṁ cāpyapāṁ tathā ,
ādhipatyaṁ dadau śakraḥ satkṛtya varadastadā.
34. vaivasvatam pitṝṇām ca varuṇam ca api apām tathā
ādhipatyam dadau śakraḥ satkṛtya varadaḥ tadā
34. Having thus pondered, the divine Mahendra, the slayer of Pāka, then, as the bestower of boons, having honored them, bestowed upon Kubera the sovereignty (ādhipatyam) over all Yakṣas and wealth, similarly upon Vaivasvata (Yama) sovereignty over the ancestors (Pitṛs), and also upon Varuna sovereignty over the waters.
