प्रयाते तव सैन्यं तु युयुधाने युयुत्सया ।
धर्मराजो महाराज स्वेनानीकेन संवृतः ।
प्रायाद्द्रोणरथप्रेप्सुर्युयुधानस्य पृष्ठतः ॥१॥

1. Saṃjaya said: O great king, when Yuyudhāna (Satyakī) had entered your army with a desire to fight, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), surrounded by his own army, proceeded behind Yuyudhāna, desiring to reach Droṇa's chariot.
ततः पाञ्चालराजस्य पुत्रः समरदुर्मदः ।
प्राक्रोशत्पाण्डवानीके वसुदानश्च पार्थिवः ॥२॥

2. Then, the son of the Pāñcāla king, who was invincible in battle, and also King Vasudāna, loudly called out in the Pāṇḍava army.
आगच्छत प्रहरत द्रुतं विपरिधावत ।
यथा सुखेन गच्छेत सात्यकिर्युद्धदुर्मदः ॥३॥
3. āgacchata praharata drutaṁ viparidhāvata ,
yathā sukhena gaccheta sātyakiryuddhadurmadaḥ.

3. Sātyaki, irresistible in battle, cried out: "Come, strike! Run about swiftly, so that you may proceed happily!"
महारथा हि बहवो यतिष्यन्त्यस्य निर्जये ।
इति ब्रुवन्तो वेगेन समापेतुर्बलं तव ॥४॥
4. mahārathā hi bahavo yatiṣyantyasya nirjaye ,
iti bruvanto vegena samāpeturbalaṁ tava.

4. "Indeed, many great warriors will exert themselves for his defeat." Saying this, they swiftly surged towards your army.
वयं प्रतिजिगीषन्तस्तत्र तान्समभिद्रुताः ।
ततः शब्दो महानासीद्युयुधानरथं प्रति ॥५॥
5. vayaṁ pratijigīṣantastatra tānsamabhidrutāḥ ,
tataḥ śabdo mahānāsīdyuyudhānarathaṁ prati.

5. We, desiring to conquer them, rushed towards them there. Then, a great clamor arose in the direction of Yuyudhāna's chariot.
प्रकम्प्यमाना महती तव पुत्रस्य वाहिनी ।
सात्वतेन महाराज शतधाभिव्यदीर्यत ॥६॥
6. prakampyamānā mahatī tava putrasya vāhinī ,

6. O great king, your son's vast army, trembling, was completely shattered into a hundred pieces by Sātvata.
तस्यां विदीर्यमाणायां शिनेः पौत्रो महारथः ।
सप्त वीरान्महेष्वासानग्रानीके व्यपोथयत् ॥७॥
7. tasyāṁ vidīryamāṇāyāṁ śineḥ pautro mahārathaḥ ,
sapta vīrānmaheṣvāsānagrānīke vyapothayat.

7. As that army was being shattered, the great warrior, Śini's grandson (Satyaki), crushed seven great archer heroes in the vanguard.
ते भीता मृद्यमानाश्च प्रमृष्टा दीर्घबाहुना ।
आयोधनं जहुर्वीरा दृष्ट्वा तमतिमानुषम् ॥८॥
8. te bhītā mṛdyamānāśca pramṛṣṭā dīrghabāhunā ,
āyodhanaṁ jahurvīrā dṛṣṭvā tamatimānuṣam.

8. Those heroes, frightened, being crushed and repulsed by the long-armed (Satyaki), abandoned the battlefield after seeing him (Satyaki) acting in a superhuman manner.
रथैर्विमथिताक्षैश्च भग्ननीडैश्च मारिष ।
चक्रैर्विमथितैश्छिन्नैर्ध्वजैश्च विनिपातितैः ॥९॥
9. rathairvimathitākṣaiśca bhagnanīḍaiśca māriṣa ,
cakrairvimathitaiśchinnairdhvajaiśca vinipātitaiḥ.

9. O respectable one, with chariots whose axles were shattered and seats broken, and with wheels crushed and severed, and with banners brought down.
अनुकर्षैः पताकाभिः शिरस्त्राणैः सकाञ्चनैः ।
बाहुभिश्चन्दनादिग्धैः साङ्गदैश्च विशां पते ॥१०॥
10. anukarṣaiḥ patākābhiḥ śirastrāṇaiḥ sakāñcanaiḥ ,
bāhubhiścandanādigdhaiḥ sāṅgadaiśca viśāṁ pate.

10. O lord of the people, [the battlefield was strewn] with standards, with flags, with golden helmets, and with arms smeared with sandalwood paste and adorned with armlets.
हस्तिहस्तोपमैश्चापि भुजगाभोगसंनिभैः ।
ऊरुभिः पृथिवी छन्ना मनुजानां नरोत्तम ॥११॥
11. hastihastopamaiścāpi bhujagābhogasaṁnibhaiḥ ,
ūrubhiḥ pṛthivī channā manujānāṁ narottama.

ūrubhiḥ pṛthivī channā manujānām narottama

11. O best among men, the earth was covered with the thighs of men, which resembled elephants' trunks and the expanded hoods of snakes.
शशाङ्कसंनिकाशैश्च वदनैश्चारुकुण्डलैः ।
पतितैर्वृषभाक्षाणां बभौ भारत मेदिनी ॥१२॥
12. śaśāṅkasaṁnikāśaiśca vadanaiścārukuṇḍalaiḥ ,
patitairvṛṣabhākṣāṇāṁ babhau bhārata medinī.
12. śaśāṅkasaṃnikāśaiḥ ca vadanaiḥ cārukuṇḍalaiḥ
patitaiḥ vṛṣabhākṣāṇām babhau bhārata medinī

12. O Bhārata, the earth gleamed with the fallen faces of warriors, who possessed bull-like eyes, resembled the moon, and were adorned with beautiful earrings.
गजैश्च बहुधा छिन्नैः शयानैः पर्वतोपमैः ।
रराजातिभृशं भूमिर्विकीर्णैरिव पर्वतैः ॥१३॥
13. gajaiśca bahudhā chinnaiḥ śayānaiḥ parvatopamaiḥ ,
rarājātibhṛśaṁ bhūmirvikīrṇairiva parvataiḥ.

13. The earth shone exceedingly with elephants, which lay slain in many ways, resembling mountains, as if it were strewn with scattered mountains.
तपनीयमयैर्योक्त्रैर्मुक्ताजालविभूषितैः ।
उरश्छदैर्विचित्रैश्च व्यशोभन्त तुरंगमाः ।
गतसत्त्वा महीं प्राप्य प्रमृष्टा दीर्घबाहुना ॥१४॥
14. tapanīyamayairyoktrairmuktājālavibhūṣitaiḥ ,
uraśchadairvicitraiśca vyaśobhanta turaṁgamāḥ ,
gatasattvā mahīṁ prāpya pramṛṣṭā dīrghabāhunā.
14. tapanīyamayaiḥ yoktraiḥ muktājālavibhūṣitaiḥ
uraśchadaiḥ vicitraiḥ ca
vyaśobhanta turaṅgamāḥ gatasattvāḥ

14. The horses, adorned with golden harnesses, embellished with pearl nets, and wearing colorful breast-plates, shone splendidly. However, those (once magnificent horses), having lost their vitality, fell to the ground, struck down by the mighty warrior (dīrghabāhu).
नानाविधानि सैन्यानि तव हत्वा तु सात्वतः ।
प्रविष्टस्तावकं सैन्यं द्रावयित्वा चमूं भृशम् ॥१५॥
15. nānāvidhāni sainyāni tava hatvā tu sātvataḥ ,
praviṣṭastāvakaṁ sainyaṁ drāvayitvā camūṁ bhṛśam.
15. nānāvidhāni sainyāni tava hatvā tu sātvataḥ
praviṣṭaḥ tāvakam sainyam drāvayitvā camūm bhṛśam
15. tu sātvataḥ tava nānāvidhāni sainyāni hatvā

15. Indeed, Sātyaki, having slain your various divisions of forces, then entered your army and intensely routed the host.
ततस्तेनैव मार्गेण येन यातो धनंजयः ।
इयेष सात्यकिर्गन्तुं ततो द्रोणेन वारितः ॥१६॥
16. tatastenaiva mārgeṇa yena yāto dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
iyeṣa sātyakirgantuṁ tato droṇena vāritaḥ.
16. tataḥ tena eva mārgeṇa yena yātaḥ dhanañjayaḥ
iyeṣa sātyakiḥ gantum tataḥ droṇena vāritaḥ
16. tataḥ sātyakiḥ yena dhanañjayaḥ yātaḥ tena

16. Then, Sātyaki wished to proceed by the very path that Arjuna (Dhānañjaya) had taken, but he was then prevented by Droṇa.
भरद्वाजं समासाद्य युयुधानस्तु मारिष ।
नाभ्यवर्तत संक्रुद्धो वेलामिव जलाशयः ॥१७॥
17. bharadvājaṁ samāsādya yuyudhānastu māriṣa ,
nābhyavartata saṁkruddho velāmiva jalāśayaḥ.

abhyavartata saṃkruddhaḥ velām iva jalāśayaḥ
17. māriṣa,
tu saṃkruddhaḥ yuyudhānaḥ bharadvājam samāsādya जलाशयः वेलाम् इव न abhyavartata
17. But Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki), O revered one, though greatly enraged, could not overcome Droṇa, Bharadvāja's son, just as a vast reservoir cannot transgress its banks.
निवार्य तु रणे द्रोणो युयुधानं महारथम् ।
विव्याध निशितैर्बाणैः पञ्चभिर्मर्मभेदिभिः ॥१८॥
18. nivārya tu raṇe droṇo yuyudhānaṁ mahāratham ,
vivyādha niśitairbāṇaiḥ pañcabhirmarmabhedibhiḥ.

vivyādha niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ pañcabhiḥ marmabhedibhiḥ

18. Drona, having restrained the great charioteer Yuyudhana in battle, pierced him with five sharp arrows that could penetrate vital spots.
सात्यकिस्तु रणे द्रोणं राजन्विव्याध सप्तभिः ।
हेमपुङ्खैः शिलाधौतैः कङ्कबर्हिणवाजितैः ॥१९॥
19. sātyakistu raṇe droṇaṁ rājanvivyādha saptabhiḥ ,
hemapuṅkhaiḥ śilādhautaiḥ kaṅkabarhiṇavājitaiḥ.
19. sātyakiḥ tu raṇe droṇaṃ rājan vivyādha saptabhiḥ
hemapuṅkhaiḥ śilādhautaiḥ kaṅkabarhiṇavājitaiḥ
19. rājan tu sātyakiḥ raṇe droṇaṃ hemapuṅkhaiḥ
śilādhautaiḥ kaṅkabarhiṇavājitaiḥ saptabhiḥ vivyādha
19. But Satyaki, O King, in that battle pierced Drona with seven arrows that had golden shafts, were sharpened on stone, and adorned with the feathers of herons and peacocks.
तं षड्भिः सायकैर्द्रोणः साश्वयन्तारमार्दयत् ।
स तं न ममृषे द्रोणं युयुधानो महारथः ॥२०॥
20. taṁ ṣaḍbhiḥ sāyakairdroṇaḥ sāśvayantāramārdayat ,
sa taṁ na mamṛṣe droṇaṁ yuyudhāno mahārathaḥ.
20. taṃ ṣaḍbhiḥ sāyakaiḥ droṇaḥ sāśvayantāram ārdāyat
saḥ taṃ na mamṛṣe droṇaṃ yuyudhānaḥ mahārathaḥ
20. droṇaḥ taṃ sāśvayantāram ṣaḍbhiḥ sāyakaiḥ ārdāyat
saḥ mahārathaḥ yuyudhānaḥ taṃ droṇaṃ na mamṛṣe
20. Drona then afflicted him, along with his horse and charioteer, with six arrows. Yuyudhana, the great charioteer, did not tolerate Drona's attack.
सिंहनादं ततः कृत्वा द्रोणं विव्याध सात्यकिः ।
दशभिः सायकैश्चान्यैः षड्भिरष्टाभिरेव च ॥२१॥
21. siṁhanādaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā droṇaṁ vivyādha sātyakiḥ ,
daśabhiḥ sāyakaiścānyaiḥ ṣaḍbhiraṣṭābhireva ca.
21. siṃhanādaṃ tataḥ kṛtvā droṇaṃ vivyādha sātyakiḥ
daśabhiḥ sāyakaiḥ ca anyaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ aṣṭābhiḥ eva ca
21. tataḥ sātyakiḥ siṃhanādaṃ kṛtvā droṇaṃ daśabhiḥ ca
anyaiḥ sāyakaiḥ vivyādha ṣaḍbhiḥ eva ca aṣṭābhiḥ
21. Then Satyaki, having let out a lion's roar, pierced Drona with ten, and then six, and again eight other arrows.
युयुधानः पुनर्द्रोणं विव्याध दशभिः शरैः ।
एकेन सारथिं चास्य चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान् ।
ध्वजमेकेन बाणेन विव्याध युधि मारिष ॥२२॥
22. yuyudhānaḥ punardroṇaṁ vivyādha daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
ekena sārathiṁ cāsya caturbhiścaturo hayān ,
dhvajamekena bāṇena vivyādha yudhi māriṣa.

daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ekena sārathim ca
asya caturbhiḥ caturaḥ hayān dhvajam

22. O respected one, Yuyudhāna again pierced Droṇa with ten arrows. With one arrow, he pierced Droṇa's charioteer, and with four arrows, his four horses. With another single arrow, he pierced the banner in battle.
तं द्रोणः साश्वयन्तारं सरथध्वजमाशुगैः ।
त्वरन्प्राच्छादयद्बाणैः शलभानामिव व्रजैः ॥२३॥
23. taṁ droṇaḥ sāśvayantāraṁ sarathadhvajamāśugaiḥ ,
tvaranprācchādayadbāṇaiḥ śalabhānāmiva vrajaiḥ.
23. tam droṇaḥ sa-aśva-yantāram sa-ratha-dhvajam āśugaiḥ
tvaran prācchādayat bāṇaiḥ śalabhānām iva vrajaiḥ
23. droṇaḥ tvaran āśugaiḥ bāṇaiḥ śalabhānām vrajaiḥ iva
tam sa-aśva-yantāram sa-ratha-dhvajam prācchādayat
23. Droṇa, swiftly, covered him (Yuyudhāna) - along with his horses, charioteer, chariot, and banner - with swift arrows, like swarms of locusts.
तथैव युयुधानोऽपि द्रोणं बहुभिराशुगैः ।
प्राच्छादयदसंभ्रान्तस्ततो द्रोण उवाच ह ॥२४॥
24. tathaiva yuyudhāno'pi droṇaṁ bahubhirāśugaiḥ ,
prācchādayadasaṁbhrāntastato droṇa uvāca ha.
24. tathā eva yuyudhānaḥ api droṇam bahubhiḥ āśugaiḥ
prācchādayat asaṃbhrāntaḥ tataḥ droṇaḥ uvāca ha
24. tathā eva asaṃbhrāntaḥ yuyudhānaḥ api bahubhiḥ
āśugaiḥ droṇam prācchādayat tataḥ droṇaḥ ha uvāca
24. Similarly, Yuyudhāna, without confusion, also covered Droṇa with many swift arrows. Then, Droṇa spoke.
तवाचार्यो रणं हित्वा गतः कापुरुषो यथा ।
युध्यमानं हि मां हित्वा प्रदक्षिणमवर्तत ॥२५॥
25. tavācāryo raṇaṁ hitvā gataḥ kāpuruṣo yathā ,
yudhyamānaṁ hi māṁ hitvā pradakṣiṇamavartata.
25. tava ācāryaḥ raṇam hitvā gataḥ kāpuruṣaḥ yathā
yudhyamānam hi mām hitvā pradakṣiṇam avartata
25. tava ācāryaḥ yathā kāpuruṣaḥ raṇam hitvā gataḥ
hi mām yudhyamānam hitvā pradakṣiṇam avartata
25. Your preceptor, having abandoned the battle, has left like a coward. Indeed, having forsaken me while I was fighting, he retreated.
त्वं हि मे युध्यतो नाद्य जीवन्मोक्ष्यसि माधव ।
यदि मां त्वं रणे हित्वा न यास्याचार्यवद्द्रुतम् ॥२६॥
26. tvaṁ hi me yudhyato nādya jīvanmokṣyasi mādhava ,
yadi māṁ tvaṁ raṇe hitvā na yāsyācāryavaddrutam.
26. tvam hi me yudhyataḥ na adya jīvan mokṣyasi Mādhava
| yadi mām tvam raṇe hitvā na yāsya ācāryavat drutam
26. Mādhava yadi tvam mām raṇe ācāryavat hitvā drutam na yāsya,
hi tvam adya me yudhyataḥ jīvan na mokṣyasi
26. O Mādhava, if you do not quickly proceed, abandoning me on the battlefield as if you were merely a preceptor, then you will certainly not escape alive from me today as I fight.
सात्यकिरुवाच ।
धनंजयस्य पदवीं धर्मराजस्य शासनात् ।
गच्छामि स्वस्ति ते ब्रह्मन्न मे कालात्ययो भवेत् ॥२७॥
27. sātyakiruvāca ,
dhanaṁjayasya padavīṁ dharmarājasya śāsanāt ,
gacchāmi svasti te brahmanna me kālātyayo bhavet.

27. Sātyaki said: At the command of King Yudhiṣṭhira (Dharmarāja), I follow the path of Arjuna (Dhanañjaya). May there be welfare for you, O Brahmin (Draṇācārya); may there be no delay for me.
संजय उवाच ।
एतावदुक्त्वा शैनेय आचार्यं परिवर्जयन् ।
प्रयातः सहसा राजन्सारथिं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥२८॥

etāvaduktvā śaineya ācāryaṁ parivarjayan ,
prayātaḥ sahasā rājansārathiṁ cedamabravīt.

28. Saṃjaya said: Having spoken thus, Sātyaki, the descendant of Śini, avoiding his preceptor (Droṇa), swiftly departed, O King, and spoke this to his charioteer.
द्रोणः करिष्यते यत्नं सर्वथा मम वारणे ।
यत्तो याहि रणे सूत शृणु चेदं वचः परम् ॥२९॥
29. droṇaḥ kariṣyate yatnaṁ sarvathā mama vāraṇe ,
yatto yāhi raṇe sūta śṛṇu cedaṁ vacaḥ param.

29. Droṇa will certainly make every effort to hinder me. Therefore, O charioteer, proceed diligently in battle, and listen to this supreme instruction.
एतदालोक्यते सैन्यमावन्त्यानां महाप्रभम् ।
अस्यानन्तरतस्त्वेतद्दाक्षिणात्यं महाबलम् ॥३०॥
30. etadālokyate sainyamāvantyānāṁ mahāprabham ,
asyānantaratastvetaddākṣiṇātyaṁ mahābalam.

30. This army of the Avantis, of great splendor, is being seen. Immediately after this, there is this great and powerful Southern army.
तदनन्तरमेतच्च बाह्लिकानां बलं महत् ।
बाह्लिकाभ्याशतो युक्तं कर्णस्यापि महद्बलम् ॥३१॥
31. tadanantarametacca bāhlikānāṁ balaṁ mahat ,
bāhlikābhyāśato yuktaṁ karṇasyāpi mahadbalam.

bāhlikābhyāśato yuktam karṇasya api mahat balam

31. Immediately after that is this great army of the Bāhlīkas. Also, near the Bāhlīkas, Karna's great army is positioned.
अन्योन्येन हि सैन्यानि भिन्नान्येतानि सारथे ।
अन्योन्यं समुपाश्रित्य न त्यक्ष्यन्ति रणाजिरम् ॥३२॥
32. anyonyena hi sainyāni bhinnānyetāni sārathe ,
anyonyaṁ samupāśritya na tyakṣyanti raṇājiram.

32. Indeed, O charioteer, these diverse armies, relying on each other, will not abandon the battlefield.
एतदन्तरमासाद्य चोदयाश्वान्प्रहृष्टवत् ।
मध्यमं जवमास्थाय वह मामत्र सारथे ॥३३॥
33. etadantaramāsādya codayāśvānprahṛṣṭavat ,
madhyamaṁ javamāsthāya vaha māmatra sārathe.

33. Having reached this gap, urge the horses joyfully, O charioteer. Maintaining a moderate speed, carry me here.
बाह्लिका यत्र दृश्यन्ते नानाप्रहरणोद्यताः ।
दाक्षिणात्याश्च बहवः सूतपुत्रपुरोगमाः ॥३४॥
34. bāhlikā yatra dṛśyante nānāpraharaṇodyatāḥ ,
dākṣiṇātyāśca bahavaḥ sūtaputrapurogamāḥ.

34. Where the Bahlika warriors are seen, prepared with various weapons, and also many southerners, with the son of a charioteer (Karna) at their head.
हस्त्यश्वरथसंबाधं यच्चानीकं विलोक्यते ।
नानादेशसमुत्थैश्च पदातिभिरधिष्ठितम् ॥३५॥
35. hastyaśvarathasaṁbādhaṁ yaccānīkaṁ vilokyate ,
nānādeśasamutthaiśca padātibhiradhiṣṭhitam.

35. And that army (anīka) which is seen, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, and commanded by foot-soldiers who have come from various regions.
एतावदुक्त्वा यन्तारं ब्रह्माणं परिवर्जयन् ।
स व्यतीयाय यत्रोग्रं कर्णस्य सुमहद्बलम् ॥३६॥
36. etāvaduktvā yantāraṁ brahmāṇaṁ parivarjayan ,
sa vyatīyāya yatrograṁ karṇasya sumahadbalam.

36. Having spoken thus, he (Karna), passing by the charioteer (Salya), who was as skilled as Brahma, then went to where Karna's fierce and very great army was.
तं द्रोणोऽनुययौ क्रुद्धो विकिरन्विशिखान्बहून् ।
युयुधानं महाबाहुं गच्छन्तमनिवर्तिनम् ॥३७॥
37. taṁ droṇo'nuyayau kruddho vikiranviśikhānbahūn ,
yuyudhānaṁ mahābāhuṁ gacchantamanivartinam.

37. Enraged, Drona followed him, Yuyudhana (Satyaki), the mighty-armed warrior who was not turning back, showering many arrows.
कर्णस्य सैन्यं सुमहदभिहत्य शितैः शरैः ।
प्राविशद्भारतीं सेनामपर्यन्तां स सात्यकिः ॥३८॥
38. karṇasya sainyaṁ sumahadabhihatya śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
prāviśadbhāratīṁ senāmaparyantāṁ sa sātyakiḥ.

38. Satyaki, having struck Karna's vast army with sharp arrows, then entered the limitless Bharata army.
प्रविष्टे युयुधाने तु सैनिकेषु द्रुतेषु च ।
अमर्षी कृतवर्मा तु सात्यकिं पर्यवारयत् ॥३९॥
39. praviṣṭe yuyudhāne tu sainikeṣu druteṣu ca ,

39. When Yuyudhana (Satyaki) had entered, and the (other) soldiers had scattered, the indignant Kritavarma then surrounded Satyaki.
तमापतन्तं विशिखैः षड्भिराहत्य सात्यकिः ।
चतुर्भिश्चतुरोऽस्याश्वानाजघानाशु वीर्यवान् ॥४०॥
40. tamāpatantaṁ viśikhaiḥ ṣaḍbhirāhatya sātyakiḥ ,
caturbhiścaturo'syāśvānājaghānāśu vīryavān.

40. Having struck that approaching Kritavarma with six arrows, the valorous Satyaki swiftly killed his four horses with four (more arrows).
ततः पुनः षोडशभिर्नतपर्वभिराशुगैः ।
सात्यकिः कृतवर्माणं प्रत्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे ॥४१॥
41. tataḥ punaḥ ṣoḍaśabhirnataparvabhirāśugaiḥ ,
sātyakiḥ kṛtavarmāṇaṁ pratyavidhyatstanāntare.

41. Then again, Satyaki pierced Kritavarma in the chest with sixteen swift-flying arrows, which had bent joints.
स तुद्यमानो विशिखैर्बहुभिस्तिग्मतेजनैः ।
सात्वतेन महाराज कृतवर्मा न चक्षमे ॥४२॥
42. sa tudyamāno viśikhairbahubhistigmatejanaiḥ ,
sātvatena mahārāja kṛtavarmā na cakṣame.

42. O great king, Kritavarma, being pierced by many sharp-pointed arrows from Satyaki, could not endure it.
स वत्सदन्तं संधाय जिह्मगानलसंनिभम् ।
आकृष्य राजन्नाकर्णाद्विव्याधोरसि सात्यकिम् ॥४३॥
43. sa vatsadantaṁ saṁdhāya jihmagānalasaṁnibham ,
ākṛṣya rājannākarṇādvivyādhorasi sātyakim.

43. O king, he (Kritavarma), having fixed a calf-tooth-shaped arrow, crooked like a snake and resembling fire, drew it up to his ear and pierced Satyaki in the chest.
स तस्य देहावरणं भित्त्वा देहं च सायकः ।
सपत्रपुङ्खः पृथिवीं विवेश रुधिरोक्षितः ॥४४॥
44. sa tasya dehāvaraṇaṁ bhittvā dehaṁ ca sāyakaḥ ,
sapatrapuṅkhaḥ pṛthivīṁ viveśa rudhirokṣitaḥ.

44. That arrow, having pierced his (Satyaki's) body armor and body, entered the earth with its feathers and shaft, smeared with blood.
अथास्य बहुभिर्बाणैरच्छिनत्परमास्त्रवित् ।
समार्गणगुणं राजन्कृतवर्मा शरासनम् ॥४५॥
45. athāsya bahubhirbāṇairacchinatparamāstravit ,
samārgaṇaguṇaṁ rājankṛtavarmā śarāsanam.

45. O king, then Kritavarma, the expert in supreme weapons, cut off his (Satyaki's) bow, along with its arrow and string, with many arrows.
विव्याध च रणे राजन्सात्यकिं सत्यविक्रमम् ।
दशभिर्विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैरभिक्रुद्धः स्तनान्तरे ॥४६॥
46. vivyādha ca raṇe rājansātyakiṁ satyavikramam ,
daśabhirviśikhaistīkṣṇairabhikruddhaḥ stanāntare.

46. And, O King, greatly enraged, he pierced Satyaki, who possessed true valor, in the chest with ten sharp arrows during the battle.
ततः प्रशीर्णे धनुषि शक्त्या शक्तिमतां वरः ।
अभ्यहन्दक्षिणं बाहुं सात्यकिः कृतवर्मणः ॥४७॥
47. tataḥ praśīrṇe dhanuṣi śaktyā śaktimatāṁ varaḥ ,
abhyahandakṣiṇaṁ bāhuṁ sātyakiḥ kṛtavarmaṇaḥ.

47. Then, when (Kritavarma's) bow was shattered, Satyaki, the best of the powerful warriors, struck Kritavarma's right arm with a spear (śakti).
ततोऽन्यत्सुदृढं वीरो धनुरादाय सात्यकिः ।
व्यसृजद्विशिखांस्तूर्णं शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥४८॥
48. tato'nyatsudṛḍhaṁ vīro dhanurādāya sātyakiḥ ,
vyasṛjadviśikhāṁstūrṇaṁ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
48. tataḥ anyat sudṛḍham vīraḥ dhanuḥ ādāya sātyakiḥ
vyasṛjat viśikhān tūrṇam śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ

48. Then the hero Satyaki, taking up another very strong bow, swiftly released hundreds, and then thousands, of arrows.
सरथं कृतवर्माणं समन्तात्पर्यवाकिरत् ।
छादयित्वा रणेऽत्यर्थं हार्दिक्यं तु स सात्यकिः ॥४९॥
49. sarathaṁ kṛtavarmāṇaṁ samantātparyavākirat ,
chādayitvā raṇe'tyarthaṁ hārdikyaṁ tu sa sātyakiḥ.

49. And indeed, that Satyaki, in battle, completely covered Kritavarma (Hardikya) and his chariot from all sides, showering them exceedingly (with arrows).
अथास्य भल्लेन शिरः सारथेः समकृन्तत ।
स पपात हतः सूतो हार्दिक्यस्य महारथात् ।
ततस्ते यन्तरि हते प्राद्रवंस्तुरगा भृशम् ॥५०॥
50. athāsya bhallena śiraḥ sāratheḥ samakṛntata ,
sa papāta hataḥ sūto hārdikyasya mahārathāt ,
tataste yantari hate prādravaṁsturagā bhṛśam.

50. Then, with a javelin, he severed the head of Hārdikya's charioteer. The killed charioteer fell from the great chariot. Consequently, with their driver slain, the horses ran off frantically.
अथ भोजस्त्वसंभ्रान्तो निगृह्य तुरगान्स्वयम् ।
तस्थौ शरधनुष्पाणिस्तत्सैन्यान्यभ्यपूजयन् ॥५१॥
51. atha bhojastvasaṁbhrānto nigṛhya turagānsvayam ,
tasthau śaradhanuṣpāṇistatsainyānyabhyapūjayan.

51. Then, Bhoja (Kṛtavarman), undismayed, himself restrained the horses and stood there, bow and arrows in hand. His troops applauded him.
स मुहूर्तमिवाश्वस्य सदश्वान्समचोदयत् ।
व्यपेतभीरमित्राणामावहत्सुमहद्भयम् ।
सात्यकिश्चाभ्यगात्तस्मात्स तु भीममुपाद्रवत् ॥५२॥
52. sa muhūrtamivāśvasya sadaśvānsamacodayat ,
vyapetabhīramitrāṇāmāvahatsumahadbhayam ,
sātyakiścābhyagāttasmātsa tu bhīmamupādravat.

52. He (Bhoja), having collected himself for a moment, spurred his excellent horses. Fearless, he brought immense terror upon his enemies. And Sātyaki advanced towards him; but Sātyaki then rushed towards Bhīma.
युयुधानोऽपि राजेन्द्र द्रोणानीकाद्विनिःसृतः ।
प्रययौ त्वरितस्तूर्णं काम्बोजानां महाचमूम् ॥५३॥
53. yuyudhāno'pi rājendra droṇānīkādviniḥsṛtaḥ ,
prayayau tvaritastūrṇaṁ kāmbojānāṁ mahācamūm.

53. O King, Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki) also emerged from Droṇa's army and swiftly proceeded to the large army of the Kambojas.
स तत्र बहुभिः शूरैः संनिरुद्धो महारथैः ।
न चचाल तदा राजन्सात्यकिः सत्यविक्रमः ॥५४॥
54. sa tatra bahubhiḥ śūraiḥ saṁniruddho mahārathaiḥ ,
na cacāla tadā rājansātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ.

54. O King, Satyaki, whose valor was unfailing, did not move then, even though he was surrounded there by many brave warriors and great chariot-fighters.
संधाय च चमूं द्रोणो भोजे भारं निवेश्य च ।
अन्वधावद्रणे यत्तो युयुधानं युयुत्सया ॥५५॥
55. saṁdhāya ca camūṁ droṇo bhoje bhāraṁ niveśya ca ,
anvadhāvadraṇe yatto yuyudhānaṁ yuyutsayā.

55. And Drona, after arraying his army and entrusting the responsibility to Bhoja, diligently pursued Yuyudhana (Satyaki) in battle with the desire to fight.
तथा तमनुधावन्तं युयुधानस्य पृष्ठतः ।
न्यवारयन्त संक्रुद्धाः पाण्डुसैन्ये बृहत्तमाः ॥५६॥
56. tathā tamanudhāvantaṁ yuyudhānasya pṛṣṭhataḥ ,
nyavārayanta saṁkruddhāḥ pāṇḍusainye bṛhattamāḥ.

56. Thus, the most eminent warriors in the Pandava army, greatly enraged, obstructed him (Drona) as he was pursuing Yuyudhana (Satyaki) from behind.
समासाद्य तु हार्दिक्यं रथानां प्रवरं रथम् ।
पाञ्चाला विगतोत्साहा भीमसेनपुरोगमाः ।
विक्रम्य वारिता राजन्वीरेण कृतवर्मणा ॥५७॥
57. samāsādya tu hārdikyaṁ rathānāṁ pravaraṁ ratham ,
pāñcālā vigatotsāhā bhīmasenapurogamāḥ ,
vikramya vāritā rājanvīreṇa kṛtavarmaṇā.

pravaram ratham pāñcālāḥ vigatotṣāhāḥ
bhīmasenapurōgamāḥ vikramya
vāritāḥ rājan vīreṇa kṛtavarmaṇā
57. rājan tu bhīmasenapurōgamāḥ
vigatotṣāhāḥ pāñcālāḥ rathānām pravaram
hārdikyam ratham samāsādya
vīreṇa kṛtavarmaṇā vikramya vāritāḥ
57. But, O King, the Panchalas, led by Bhimasena and disheartened, having encountered Hārdikya (Kṛtavarman), who was the foremost among charioteers, were repelled by the heroic Kṛtavarman after he displayed valor.
यतमानांस्तु तान्सर्वानीषद्विगतचेतसः ।
अभितस्ताञ्शरौघेण क्लान्तवाहानवारयत् ॥५८॥
58. yatamānāṁstu tānsarvānīṣadvigatacetasaḥ ,
abhitastāñśaraugheṇa klāntavāhānavārayat.
58. yatamanān tu tān sarvān īṣat vigatacetasaḥ
abhitah tān śaraugheṇa klāntavāhān avārayat
58. tu abhitah śaraugheṇa tān sarvān yatamanān
īṣat vigatacetasaḥ klāntavāhān avārayat
58. But he, with a shower of arrows from all sides, checked all those who were striving, even though their spirits were slightly diminished and their mounts were exhausted.
निगृहीतास्तु भोजेन भोजानीकेप्सवो रणे ।
अतिष्ठन्नार्यवद्वीराः प्रार्थयन्तो महद्यशः ॥५९॥
59. nigṛhītāstu bhojena bhojānīkepsavo raṇe ,
atiṣṭhannāryavadvīrāḥ prārthayanto mahadyaśaḥ.
59. nigṛhītāḥ tu bhojena bhojānīkepsavaḥ raṇe
atiṣṭhan āryavat vīrāḥ prārthayantaḥ mahat yaśaḥ
59. tu bhojena raṇe nigṛhītāḥ vīrāḥ bhojānīkepsavaḥ
mahat yaśaḥ prārthayantaḥ āryavat atiṣṭhan
59. However, those heroes who desired to join Bhoja's army and were seeking great glory, though restrained by Bhoja in battle, stood firm with nobility.
