मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
स एवमुक्तो राजर्षिरुत्तङ्केनापराजितः ।
उत्तङ्कं कौरवश्रेष्ठ कृताञ्जलिरथाब्रवीत् ॥१॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'O best of the Kurus, that royal sage, who was undefeated, being thus addressed by Uttanka, then spoke to Uttanka with folded hands.'
न तेऽभिगमनं ब्रह्मन्मोघमेतद्भविष्यति ।
पुत्रो ममायं भगवन्कुवलाश्व इति स्मृतः ॥२॥

2. na te'bhigamanaṁ brahmanmoghametadbhaviṣyati ,
putro mamāyaṁ bhagavankuvalāśva iti smṛtaḥ.

na te abhigamanam brahman mogham etat bhaviṣyati

O brahmin, your visit will not be in vain; this son of mine, O venerable one, is known as Kuvalāśva.
धृतिमान्क्षिप्रकारी च वीर्येणाप्रतिमो भुवि ।
प्रियं वै सर्वमेतत्ते करिष्यति न संशयः ॥३॥

3. dhṛtimānkṣiprakārī ca vīryeṇāpratimo bhuvi ,
priyaṁ vai sarvametatte kariṣyati na saṁśayaḥ.

dhṛtimān kṣiprakārī ca vīryeṇa apratimaḥ bhuvi
priyam vai sarvam etat te kariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ

He is resolute and swift in action, unrivaled in valor on earth. He will certainly accomplish all that is dear to you; there is no doubt.
पुत्रैः परिवृतः सर्वैः शूरैः परिघबाहुभिः ।
विसर्जयस्व मां ब्रह्मन्न्यस्तशस्त्रोऽस्मि सांप्रतम् ॥४॥

4. putraiḥ parivṛtaḥ sarvaiḥ śūraiḥ parighabāhubhiḥ ,
visarjayasva māṁ brahmannyastaśastro'smi sāṁpratam.

O Brahmin, I am surrounded by all my brave sons, whose arms are like maces. Please dismiss me now, for I have laid down my weapons.
तथास्त्विति च तेनोक्तो मुनिनामिततेजसा ।
स तमादिश्य तनयमुत्तङ्काय महात्मने ।
क्रियतामिति राजर्षिर्जगाम वनमुत्तमम् ॥५॥

5. tathāstviti ca tenokto munināmitatejasā ,
sa tamādiśya tanayamuttaṅkāya mahātmane ,
kriyatāmiti rājarṣirjagāma vanamuttamam.

tathā astu iti ca tena uktaḥ muninā
amitatejasā saḥ tam ādiśya

iti rājarṣiḥ jagāma vanam uttamam
amitatejasā saḥ tam ādiśya
tanayam uttaṅkāya mahātmane kriyatām
iti rājarṣiḥ jagāma vanam uttamam

And thus, "So be it!" was said by that sage (muni) of immeasurable splendor. Having instructed his son, saying to the great-souled Uttanka, "Let it be done!", the royal sage then went to the excellent forest.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
क एष भगवन्दैत्यो महावीर्यस्तपोधन ।
कस्य पुत्रोऽथ नप्ता वा एतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥६॥

6. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ka eṣa bhagavandaityo mahāvīryastapodhana ,

Yudhishthira said: "O revered one, O ascetic (tapodhana), who is this greatly powerful demon? Whose son or grandson is he? I wish to know this."
एवं महाबलो दैत्यो न श्रुतो मे तपोधन ।
एतदिच्छामि भगवन्याथातथ्येन वेदितुम् ।
सर्वमेव महाप्राज्ञ विस्तरेण तपोधन ॥७॥
एतदिच्छामि भगवन्याथातथ्येन वेदितुम् ।
सर्वमेव महाप्राज्ञ विस्तरेण तपोधन ॥७॥
7. evaṁ mahābalo daityo na śruto me tapodhana ,
etadicchāmi bhagavanyāthātathyena veditum ,
sarvameva mahāprājña vistareṇa tapodhana.

O ascetic (tapodhana), I have not heard of such a mighty demon (daitya). O venerable one (bhagavan), O greatly wise one, O ascetic (tapodhana), I wish to know all of this truly and in detail.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्निदं सर्वं यथावृत्तं नराधिप ।
एकार्णवे तदा घोरे नष्टे स्थावरजङ्गमे ।
प्रनष्टेषु च भूतेषु सर्वेषु भरतर्षभ ॥८॥

8. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājannidaṁ sarvaṁ yathāvṛttaṁ narādhipa ,
ekārṇave tadā ghore naṣṭe sthāvarajaṅgame ,
pranaṣṭeṣu ca bhūteṣu sarveṣu bharatarṣabha.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'O King (rājan), O lord of men (narādhipa), O best of Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), listen to all of this, exactly as it happened. At that time, when all movable and immovable beings were destroyed in the terrible single ocean, and when all creatures had perished...'
प्रभवः सर्वभूतानां शाश्वतः पुरुषोऽव्ययः ।
सुष्वाप भगवान्विष्णुरप्शय्यामेक एव ह ।
नागस्य भोगे महति शेषस्यामिततेजसः ॥९॥

9. prabhavaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ śāśvataḥ puruṣo'vyayaḥ ,
suṣvāpa bhagavānviṣṇurapśayyāmeka eva ha ,
nāgasya bhoge mahati śeṣasyāmitatejasaḥ.
suṣvāpa bhagavānviṣṇurapśayyāmeka eva ha ,
nāgasya bhoge mahati śeṣasyāmitatejasaḥ.

prabhavaḥ sarvabhūtānām śāśvataḥ
puruṣaḥ avyayaḥ suṣvāpa bhagavān
viṣṇuḥ apśayyām ekaḥ eva ha nāgasya
bhoge mahati śeṣasya amitatejasaḥ
puruṣaḥ avyayaḥ suṣvāpa bhagavān
viṣṇuḥ apśayyām ekaḥ eva ha nāgasya
bhoge mahati śeṣasya amitatejasaḥ

The eternal, imperishable supreme cosmic person (puruṣa), the source of all beings, Lord Viṣṇu (bhagavān viṣṇu), slept alone on a bed of water (apśayyā), upon the vast body of the serpent Śeṣa, who possesses immeasurable splendor.
लोककर्ता महाभाग भगवानच्युतो हरिः ।
नागभोगेन महता परिरभ्य महीमिमाम् ॥१०॥

10. lokakartā mahābhāga bhagavānacyuto hariḥ ,
nāgabhogena mahatā parirabhya mahīmimām.

The venerable Lord Hari (bhagavān hari), the infallible one (acyuta), the creator of worlds, the greatly fortunate one, having encompassed this earth with the vast body (bhoga) of the serpent...
स्वपतस्तस्य देवस्य पद्मं सूर्यसमप्रभम् ।
नाभ्यां विनिःसृतं तत्र यत्रोत्पन्नः पितामहः ।
साक्षाल्लोकगुरुर्ब्रह्मा पद्मे सूर्येन्दुसप्रभे ॥११॥
नाभ्यां विनिःसृतं तत्र यत्रोत्पन्नः पितामहः ।

11. svapatastasya devasya padmaṁ sūryasamaprabham ,
nābhyāṁ viniḥsṛtaṁ tatra yatrotpannaḥ pitāmahaḥ ,
sākṣāllokagururbrahmā padme sūryendusaprabhe.
nābhyāṁ viniḥsṛtaṁ tatra yatrotpannaḥ pitāmahaḥ ,
sākṣāllokagururbrahmā padme sūryendusaprabhe.

svapataḥ tasya devasya padmaṃ
sūryasamaprabham nābhyām viniḥsṛtaṃ tatra
yatra utpannaḥ pitāmahaḥ sākṣāt
lokaguruḥ brahmā padme sūryendusaprabhe
sūryasamaprabham nābhyām viniḥsṛtaṃ tatra
yatra utpannaḥ pitāmahaḥ sākṣāt
lokaguruḥ brahmā padme sūryendusaprabhe

From the navel of that sleeping deity, a lotus as radiant as the sun emerged. It was there, in that lotus (which shone like both the sun and the moon), that Brahmā, the grandfather and direct preceptor of the worlds, was born.
चतुर्वेदश्चतुर्मूर्तिस्तथैव च चतुर्मुखः ।
स्वप्रभावाद्दुराधर्षो महाबलपराक्रमः ॥१२॥

12. caturvedaścaturmūrtistathaiva ca caturmukhaḥ ,
svaprabhāvāddurādharṣo mahābalaparākramaḥ.

He (Brahmā) was endowed with knowledge of the four Vedas, possessed four forms, and also had four faces. Unassailable due to his own intrinsic nature (dharma), he was endowed with great strength and valor.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य दानवौ वीर्यवत्तरौ ।
मधुश्च कैटभश्चैव दृष्टवन्तौ हरिं प्रभुम् ॥१३॥

13. kasyacittvatha kālasya dānavau vīryavattarau ,
madhuśca kaiṭabhaścaiva dṛṣṭavantau hariṁ prabhum.

Then, after some time, two exceedingly powerful demons, Madhu and Kaiṭabha, indeed saw Lord Hari.
शयानं शयने दिव्ये नागभोगे महाद्युतिम् ।
बहुयोजनविस्तीर्णे बहुयोजनमायते ॥१४॥
बहुयोजनविस्तीर्णे बहुयोजनमायते ॥१४॥
14. śayānaṁ śayane divye nāgabhoge mahādyutim ,
bahuyojanavistīrṇe bahuyojanamāyate.

They saw Hari, who was lying upon a divine couch, specifically on the coils of a great serpent, shining with great splendor. This couch was vast, extending many yojanas in width, and stretching many yojanas in length.
किरीटकौस्तुभधरं पीतकौशेयवाससम् ।
दीप्यमानं श्रिया राजंस्तेजसा वपुषा तथा ।
सहस्रसूर्यप्रतिममद्भुतोपमदर्शनम् ॥१५॥
दीप्यमानं श्रिया राजंस्तेजसा वपुषा तथा ।
सहस्रसूर्यप्रतिममद्भुतोपमदर्शनम् ॥१५॥
15. kirīṭakaustubhadharaṁ pītakauśeyavāsasam ,
dīpyamānaṁ śriyā rājaṁstejasā vapuṣā tathā ,
sahasrasūryapratimamadbhutopamadarśanam.

15.
O King, he was adorned with a diadem and the Kaustubha jewel, dressed in yellow silken garments, radiating splendor, brilliance, and a majestic form. His appearance was astonishing and incomparable, resembling a thousand suns.
विस्मयः सुमहानासीन्मधुकैटभयोस्तदा ।
दृष्ट्वा पितामहं चैव पद्मे पद्मनिभेक्षणम् ॥१६॥
दृष्ट्वा पितामहं चैव पद्मे पद्मनिभेक्षणम् ॥१६॥
16. vismayaḥ sumahānāsīnmadhukaiṭabhayostadā ,
dṛṣṭvā pitāmahaṁ caiva padme padmanibhekṣaṇam.

A great astonishment arose in Madhu and Kaiṭabha then, when they saw Brahmā, the grandfather (of beings), seated on the lotus, whose eyes resembled lotuses.
वित्रासयेतामथ तौ ब्रह्माणममितौजसम् ।
वित्रास्यमानो बहुशो ब्रह्मा ताभ्यां महायशाः ।
अकम्पयत्पद्मनालं ततोऽबुध्यत केशवः ॥१७॥
वित्रास्यमानो बहुशो ब्रह्मा ताभ्यां महायशाः ।
अकम्पयत्पद्मनालं ततोऽबुध्यत केशवः ॥१७॥
17. vitrāsayetāmatha tau brahmāṇamamitaujasam ,
vitrāsyamāno bahuśo brahmā tābhyāṁ mahāyaśāḥ ,
akampayatpadmanālaṁ tato'budhyata keśavaḥ.
vitrāsyamāno bahuśo brahmā tābhyāṁ mahāyaśāḥ ,
akampayatpadmanālaṁ tato'budhyata keśavaḥ.

vitrāsayetām atha tau brahmāṇam
amitaujasam vitrāsyāmānaḥ bahuśaḥ
brahmā tābhyām mahāyaśāḥ akampayat
padmanālam tataḥ abudhyata keśavaḥ
amitaujasam vitrāsyāmānaḥ bahuśaḥ
brahmā tābhyām mahāyaśāḥ akampayat
padmanālam tataḥ abudhyata keśavaḥ

Then, those two (Madhu and Kaiṭabha) began to frighten Brahmā, who possessed immeasurable might. Repeatedly tormented by those two, the glorious Brahmā shook the lotus-stalk, and thereupon, Keśava (Vishnu) awoke.
अथापश्यत गोविन्दो दानवौ वीर्यवत्तरौ ।
दृष्ट्वा तावब्रवीद्देवः स्वागतं वां महाबलौ ।
ददानि वां वरं श्रेष्ठं प्रीतिर्हि मम जायते ॥१८॥
दृष्ट्वा तावब्रवीद्देवः स्वागतं वां महाबलौ ।
ददानि वां वरं श्रेष्ठं प्रीतिर्हि मम जायते ॥१८॥
18. athāpaśyata govindo dānavau vīryavattarau ,
dṛṣṭvā tāvabravīddevaḥ svāgataṁ vāṁ mahābalau ,
dadāni vāṁ varaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ prītirhi mama jāyate.
dṛṣṭvā tāvabravīddevaḥ svāgataṁ vāṁ mahābalau ,
dadāni vāṁ varaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ prītirhi mama jāyate.

atha apaśyata govindaḥ dānavau
vīryavattarau dṛṣṭvā tau abravīt devaḥ
svāgatam vām mahābalau dadāni vām
varam śreṣṭham prītiḥ hi mama jāyate
vīryavattarau dṛṣṭvā tau abravīt devaḥ
svāgatam vām mahābalau dadāni vām
varam śreṣṭham prītiḥ hi mama jāyate
18.
Then Govinda (Vishnu) saw the two exceedingly mighty demons. Upon seeing them, the god (Vishnu) said, "Welcome to you both, O mighty ones! I shall grant you a supreme boon, for indeed, my satisfaction has arisen."
तौ प्रहस्य हृषीकेशं महावीर्यौ महासुरौ ।
प्रत्यब्रूतां महाराज सहितौ मधुसूदनम् ॥१९॥

19. tau prahasya hṛṣīkeśaṁ mahāvīryau mahāsurau ,
pratyabrūtāṁ mahārāja sahitau madhusūdanam.

O great king, those two exceedingly powerful great demons, laughing heartily, together replied to Hṛṣīkeśa, the slayer of Madhu.
आवां वरय देव त्वं वरदौ स्वः सुरोत्तम ।
दातारौ स्वो वरं तुभ्यं तद्ब्रवीह्यविचारयन् ॥२०॥
दातारौ स्वो वरं तुभ्यं तद्ब्रवीह्यविचारयन् ॥२०॥
20. āvāṁ varaya deva tvaṁ varadau svaḥ surottama ,
dātārau svo varaṁ tubhyaṁ tadbravīhyavicārayan.
dātārau svo varaṁ tubhyaṁ tadbravīhyavicārayan.

āvām varaya deva tvam varadau svaḥ surottama
dātārau svaḥ varam tubhyam tat bravīhi avicārayan
dātārau svaḥ varam tubhyam tat bravīhi avicārayan

O Lord, you should ask us (for a boon), O best of gods, for we two are givers of boons. We are indeed grantors of a boon to you; therefore, declare your wish without hesitation.
भगवानुवाच ।
प्रतिगृह्णे वरं वीरावीप्सितश्च वरो मम ।
युवां हि वीर्यसंपन्नौ न वामस्ति समः पुमान् ॥२१॥
प्रतिगृह्णे वरं वीरावीप्सितश्च वरो मम ।
युवां हि वीर्यसंपन्नौ न वामस्ति समः पुमान् ॥२१॥
21. bhagavānuvāca ,
pratigṛhṇe varaṁ vīrāvīpsitaśca varo mama ,
yuvāṁ hi vīryasaṁpannau na vāmasti samaḥ pumān.
pratigṛhṇe varaṁ vīrāvīpsitaśca varo mama ,
yuvāṁ hi vīryasaṁpannau na vāmasti samaḥ pumān.

bhagavān uvāca pratigṛhṇe varam vīrau īpsitaḥ ca varaḥ
mama yuvām hi vīryasampannau na vām asti samaḥ pumān
mama yuvām hi vīryasampannau na vām asti samaḥ pumān

The Lord (Bhagavān) said: "O heroes, I accept this boon, and this is indeed my desired boon. For you two are endowed with valor, and no other man exists who is equal to you."
वध्यत्वमुपगच्छेतां मम सत्यपराक्रमौ ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं कामं प्राप्तुं लोकहिताय वै ॥२२॥
एतदिच्छाम्यहं कामं प्राप्तुं लोकहिताय वै ॥२२॥

Madhu and Kaiṭabha said, "We have never spoken an untruth, not even in our casual dealings; how could we otherwise? O Best of Persons, know that we are both devoted to truth and righteousness (dharma)."
बले रूपे च वीर्ये च शमे च न समोऽस्ति नौ ।
धर्मे तपसि दाने च शीलसत्त्वदमेषु च ॥२४॥

There is no one equal to us in strength, beauty, valor, or tranquility. Nor is there anyone equal in righteousness (dharma), austerity (tapas), charity (dāna), good conduct, goodness, and self-restraint.
उपप्लवो महानस्मानुपावर्तत केशव ।
उक्तं प्रतिकुरुष्व त्वं कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः ॥२५॥

O Keśava, a great calamity has now come upon us! You must fulfill what you have promised, for time is indeed insurmountable.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'Then, having pondered, Govinda (Govinda), the destroyer of the demon Madhu (Madhusūdana), did not find any unobstructed space, either on earth or in the sky.'

चक्रेण शितधारेण न्यकृन्तत महायशाः ॥३०॥

O king, then the greatly glorious Madhusūdana (Madhusūdana), the best among the gods, having seen his own two uncovered thighs, cut off the two heads of Madhu and Kaiṭabha with his sharp-edged discus.
