वैशंपायन उवाच ।
विदुरस्य सुहृत्कश्चित्खनकः कुशलः क्वचित् ।
विविक्ते पाण्डवान्राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
vidurasya suhṛtkaścitkhanakaḥ kuśalaḥ kvacit ,
vivikte pāṇḍavānrājannidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

kuśalaḥ kvacit vivikte pāṇḍavān rājan idam vacanam abravīt
1. Vaiśampāyana said: 'O King, a certain friendly and skilled miner secretly spoke these words to the Pāṇḍavas in an isolated place.'
प्रहितो विदुरेणास्मि खनकः कुशलो भृशम् ।
पाण्डवानां प्रियं कार्यमिति किं करवाणि वः ॥२॥
2. prahito vidureṇāsmi khanakaḥ kuśalo bhṛśam ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ priyaṁ kāryamiti kiṁ karavāṇi vaḥ.
2. prahitaḥ vidureṇa asmi khanakaḥ kuśalaḥ bhṛśam
pāṇḍavānām priyam kāryam iti kim karavāṇi vaḥ
2. I am a very skilled miner, sent by Vidura. What pleasing task can I perform for you Pāṇḍavas?
प्रच्छन्नं विदुरेणोक्तः श्रेयस्त्वमिह पाण्डवान् ।
प्रतिपादय विश्वासादिति किं करवाणि वः ॥३॥
3. pracchannaṁ vidureṇoktaḥ śreyastvamiha pāṇḍavān ,
pratipādaya viśvāsāditi kiṁ karavāṇi vaḥ.
3. pracchannam vidureṇa uktaḥ śreyaḥ tvam iha
pāṇḍavān pratipādaya viśvāsāt iti kim karavāṇi vaḥ
3. Vidura secretly instructed me, 'Out of trust, you must ensure the welfare (śreyas) of the Pāṇḍavas here.' Therefore, what can I do for you?
कृष्णपक्षे चतुर्दश्यां रात्रावस्य पुरोचनः ।
भवनस्य तव द्वारि प्रदास्यति हुताशनम् ॥४॥
4. kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśyāṁ rātrāvasya purocanaḥ ,
bhavanasya tava dvāri pradāsyati hutāśanam.
4. kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśyām rātrau asya purocanaḥ
bhavanasya tava dvāri pradāsyati hutāśanam
4. On the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight (kṛṣṇapakṣa), Purocana will set fire to the door of this very house of yours.
मात्रा सह प्रदग्धव्याः पाण्डवाः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
इति व्यवसितं पार्थ धार्तराष्ट्रस्य मे श्रुतम् ॥५॥
5. mātrā saha pradagdhavyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
iti vyavasitaṁ pārtha dhārtarāṣṭrasya me śrutam.
5. mātrā saha pradagdhavyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ
iti vyavasitam pārtha dhārtarāṣṭrasya me śrutam
5. O Pārtha, I have heard this resolve of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son: that the Pāṇḍavas, these best of men, should be burned along with their mother.
किंचिच्च विदुरेणोक्तो म्लेच्छवाचासि पाण्डव ।
त्वया च तत्तथेत्युक्तमेतद्विश्वासकारणम् ॥६॥
6. kiṁcicca vidureṇokto mlecchavācāsi pāṇḍava ,
tvayā ca tattathetyuktametadviśvāsakāraṇam.
6. kiṃcit ca vidureṇa uktaḥ mlecchavācā asi pāṇḍava
tvayā ca tat tathā iti uktam etat viśvāsakāraṇam
6. O Pāṇḍava, Vidura spoke something to you in the Mleccha language, and you replied, 'So it is.' This is the reason for my trust (śraddhā).
उवाच तं सत्यधृतिः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
अभिजानामि सौम्य त्वां सुहृदं विदुरस्य वै ॥७॥
7. uvāca taṁ satyadhṛtiḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
abhijānāmi saumya tvāṁ suhṛdaṁ vidurasya vai.
7. uvāca tam satyadhṛtiḥ kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
abhijānāmi saumya tvām suhṛdam vidurasya vai
7. Kuntī’s son Yudhiṣṭhira, firm in his resolve, said to him: "O gentle one, I recognize you as Vidura's friend."
शुचिमाप्तं प्रियं चैव सदा च दृढभक्तिकम् ।
न विद्यते कवेः किंचिदभिज्ञानप्रयोजनम् ॥८॥
8. śucimāptaṁ priyaṁ caiva sadā ca dṛḍhabhaktikam ,
na vidyate kaveḥ kiṁcidabhijñānaprayojanam.
8. śucim āptam priyam ca eva sadā ca dṛḍhabhaktikam
na vidyate kaveḥ kiṃcit abhijñānaprayojanam
8. You are pure, trustworthy, dear, and always steadfast in your devotion (bhakti). There is no need for any mark of recognition from a wise person.
यथा नः स तथा नस्त्वं निर्विशेषा वयं त्वयि ।
भवतः स्म यथा तस्य पालयास्मान्यथा कविः ॥९॥
9. yathā naḥ sa tathā nastvaṁ nirviśeṣā vayaṁ tvayi ,
bhavataḥ sma yathā tasya pālayāsmānyathā kaviḥ.
9. yathā naḥ sa tathā naḥ tvam nirviśeṣā vayam tvayi
bhavataḥ sma yathā tasya pālayā asmān yathā kaviḥ
9. As he (Vidura) is to us, so are you to us; for us, you are no different. Just as we belonged to him, so we belong to you now. Protect us as the wise one (Vidura would).
इदं शरणमाग्नेयं मदर्थमिति मे मतिः ।
पुरोचनेन विहितं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य शासनात् ॥१०॥
10. idaṁ śaraṇamāgneyaṁ madarthamiti me matiḥ ,
purocanena vihitaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt.
10. idam śaraṇam āgneyam mat-artham iti me matiḥ
| purocanena vihitam dhārtarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt
10. It is my belief that this highly flammable dwelling (śaraṇa) was constructed by Purocana at the command of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Dhārtarāṣṭra) and is intended for my destruction.
स पापः कोशवांश्चैव ससहायश्च दुर्मतिः ।
अस्मानपि च दुष्टात्मा नित्यकालं प्रबाधते ॥११॥
11. sa pāpaḥ kośavāṁścaiva sasahāyaśca durmatiḥ ,
asmānapi ca duṣṭātmā nityakālaṁ prabādhate.
11. sa pāpaḥ kośavān ca eva sa-sahāyaḥ ca durmatiḥ
| asmān api ca duṣṭa-ātmā nitya-kālam prabādhate
11. That sinful (pāpaḥ), wealthy, well-supported, and evil-minded (durmatiḥ) person, that wicked-souled (duṣṭātmā) individual, constantly oppresses us.
स भवान्मोक्षयत्वस्मान्यत्नेनास्माद्धुताशनात् ।
अस्मास्विह हि दग्धेषु सकामः स्यात्सुयोधनः ॥१२॥
12. sa bhavānmokṣayatvasmānyatnenāsmāddhutāśanāt ,
asmāsviha hi dagdheṣu sakāmaḥ syātsuyodhanaḥ.
12. sa bhavān mokṣayatu asmān yatnena asmāt huta-aśanāt
| asmāsu iha hi dagdheṣu sa-kāmaḥ syāt suyodhanaḥ
12. You, sir, must diligently liberate us from this fire. Indeed, if we are burned here, Suyodhana's desire will be fulfilled.
समृद्धमायुधागारमिदं तस्य दुरात्मनः ।
वप्रान्ते निष्प्रतीकारमाश्लिष्येदं कृतं महत् ॥१३॥
13. samṛddhamāyudhāgāramidaṁ tasya durātmanaḥ ,
vaprānte niṣpratīkāramāśliṣyedaṁ kṛtaṁ mahat.
13. samṛddham āyudha-āgāram idam tasya dur-ātmanaḥ |
vapra-ante niṣpratīkāram āśliṣya idam kṛtam mahat
13. This great, well-equipped armory of that wicked person (durātmā) has been constructed adjoining the rampart (vaprānta), making any resistance (niṣpratīkāra) impossible.
इदं तदशुभं नूनं तस्य कर्म चिकीर्षितम् ।
प्रागेव विदुरो वेद तेनास्मानन्वबोधयत् ॥१४॥
14. idaṁ tadaśubhaṁ nūnaṁ tasya karma cikīrṣitam ,
prāgeva viduro veda tenāsmānanvabodhayat.
14. idam tat aśubham nūnam tasya karma cikīrṣitam
| prāk eva viduraḥ veda tena asmān anvabodhayat
14. This is certainly that inauspicious act (karma) intended by him. Vidura knew this beforehand, and therefore he informed us.
सेयमापदनुप्राप्ता क्षत्ता यां दृष्टवान्पुरा ।
पुरोचनस्याविदितानस्मांस्त्वं विप्रमोचय ॥१५॥
15. seyamāpadanuprāptā kṣattā yāṁ dṛṣṭavānpurā ,
purocanasyāviditānasmāṁstvaṁ vipramocaya.
15. sā iyam āpat anuprāptā kṣattā yām dṛṣṭavān purā
purocanasya aviditān asmān tvam vipramocaya
15. This very calamity has now arrived, which the charioteer (Vidura) had foreseen long ago. You must deliver us, keeping it unknown to Purocana.
स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य खनको यत्नमास्थितः ।
परिखामुत्किरन्नाम चकार सुमहद्बिलम् ॥१६॥
16. sa tatheti pratiśrutya khanako yatnamāsthitaḥ ,
parikhāmutkirannāma cakāra sumahadbilam.
16. sa tathā iti pratiśrutya khanakaḥ yatnam āsthitaḥ
parikhām utkiran nāma cakāra sumahat bilam
16. He, the digger, having assented saying, 'So be it,' applied himself with diligence. While excavating the moat, he indeed created a very large tunnel.
चक्रे च वेश्मनस्तस्य मध्ये नातिमहन्मुखम् ।
कपाटयुक्तमज्ञातं समं भूम्या च भारत ॥१७॥
17. cakre ca veśmanastasya madhye nātimahanmukham ,
kapāṭayuktamajñātaṁ samaṁ bhūmyā ca bhārata.
17. cakre ca veśmanaḥ tasya madhye na atimahat mukham
kapāṭayuktam ajñātam samam bhūmyā ca bhārata
17. And in the middle of that house, O Bharata, he made an entrance that was not too large, but was equipped with a door, remained hidden, and was flush with the ground.
पुरोचनभयाच्चैव व्यदधात्संवृतं मुखम् ।
स तत्र च गृहद्वारि वसत्यशुभधीः सदा ॥१८॥
18. purocanabhayāccaiva vyadadhātsaṁvṛtaṁ mukham ,
sa tatra ca gṛhadvāri vasatyaśubhadhīḥ sadā.
18. purocanabhayāt ca eva vyadadhāt saṁvṛtam mukham
sa tatra ca gṛhadvāri vasati aśubhadhīḥ sadā
18. And indeed, out of fear of Purocana, he kept the opening concealed. That evil-minded (aśubha-dhī) Purocana himself always resides at the entrance of the house.
तत्र ते सायुधाः सर्वे वसन्ति स्म क्षपां नृप ।
दिवा चरन्ति मृगयां पाण्डवेया वनाद्वनम् ॥१९॥
19. tatra te sāyudhāḥ sarve vasanti sma kṣapāṁ nṛpa ,
divā caranti mṛgayāṁ pāṇḍaveyā vanādvanam.
19. tatra te sa-āyudhāḥ sarve vasanti sma kṣapām
nṛpa divā caranti mṛgayām pāṇḍaveyāḥ vanāt vanam
19. O King, all of them, fully armed, used to reside there at night. By day, the Pandavas would roam, hunting, from forest to forest.
विश्वस्तवदविश्वस्ता वञ्चयन्तः पुरोचनम् ।
अतुष्टास्तुष्टवद्राजन्नूषुः परमदुःखिताः ॥२०॥
20. viśvastavadaviśvastā vañcayantaḥ purocanam ,
atuṣṭāstuṣṭavadrājannūṣuḥ paramaduḥkhitāḥ.
20. viśvastavat aviśvastāḥ vañcayantaḥ purocanam
atuṣṭāḥ tuṣṭavat rājan ūṣuḥ paramaduḥkhitāḥ
20. O King, though extremely distressed, they lived there untrusting (aviśvastāḥ) but feigning trust and satisfaction, all the while deceiving Purocana (purocanam).
न चैनानन्वबुध्यन्त नरा नगरवासिनः ।
अन्यत्र विदुरामात्यात्तस्मात्खनकसत्तमात् ॥२१॥
21. na cainānanvabudhyanta narā nagaravāsinaḥ ,
anyatra vidurāmātyāttasmātkhanakasattamāt.
21. na ca enān anvabudhyanta narāḥ nagaravāsinaḥ
anyatra vidurāmātyāt tasmāt khanakasattamāt
21. And the city dwellers did not perceive them (enān), except for Vidura, the advisor (amātya), that excellent miner (khanakasattamāt).
