युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
श्राद्धकाले च दैवे च धर्मे चापि पितामह ।
इच्छामीह त्वयाख्यातं विहितं यत्सुरर्षिभिः ॥१॥

Yudhishthira said: 'O Grandfather, I wish that which has been prescribed by the divine sages, and narrated by you here, regarding the appropriate time for ancestral rites (śrāddha), concerning also matters of the gods (daiva), and the natural law (dharma).'
भीष्म उवाच ।
दैवं पूर्वाह्णिके कुर्यादपराह्णे तु पैतृकम् ।
मङ्गलाचारसंपन्नः कृतशौचः प्रयत्नवान् ॥२॥

Bhishma said: 'One should perform the rites pertaining to the deities (daiva) in the forenoon, but the ancestral rites (paitṛka) in the afternoon, being endowed with auspicious conduct, having performed purification, and being diligent.'
मनुष्याणां तु मध्याह्ने प्रदद्यादुपपत्तितः ।
कालहीनं तु यद्दानं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥३॥

However, one should make offerings to humans appropriately at midday. But whatever gift (dāna) is given at an improper time, they consider that portion to belong to the demons (rakṣas).
लङ्घितं चावलीढं च कलिपूर्वं च यत्कृतम् ।
रजस्वलाभिर्दृष्टं च तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥४॥

4. laṅghitaṁ cāvalīḍhaṁ ca kalipūrvaṁ ca yatkṛtam ,

They consider that portion of food to belong to the rākṣasas which has been stepped over, licked, contaminated by a quarrel (kalipūrvaṃ), or seen by menstruating women.
अवघुष्टं च यद्भुक्तमव्रतेन च भारत ।
परामृष्टं शुना चैव तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥५॥

5. avaghuṣṭaṁ ca yadbhuktamavratena ca bhārata ,

O Bhārata, they consider that portion of food to belong to the rākṣasas which has been loudly proclaimed, eaten by one who does not observe vows, or indeed touched by a dog.
केशकीटावपतितं क्षुतं श्वभिरवेक्षितम् ।
रुदितं चावधूतं च तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥६॥
रुदितं चावधूतं च तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥६॥
6. keśakīṭāvapatitaṁ kṣutaṁ śvabhiravekṣitam ,
ruditaṁ cāvadhūtaṁ ca taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.

They consider that portion of food to belong to the rākṣasas which has hair or insects fallen into it, has been sneezed upon, viewed by dogs, cried over, or disregarded.
निरोंकारेण यद्भुक्तं सशस्त्रेण च भारत ।
दुरात्मना च यद्भुक्तं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥७॥

7. niroṁkāreṇa yadbhuktaṁ saśastreṇa ca bhārata ,
durātmanā ca yadbhuktaṁ taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.

niroṃkāreṇa yat bhuktam saśastreṇa ca bhārata

O Bhārata, they consider that portion of food to belong to the rākṣasas which has been eaten without uttering "oṃ" (oṃkāra), by a person carrying a weapon, or by an evil person (durātman).
परोच्छिष्टं च यद्भुक्तं परिभुक्तं च यद्भवेत् ।
दैवे पित्र्ये च सततं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥८॥
दैवे पित्र्ये च सततं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥८॥
8. parocchiṣṭaṁ ca yadbhuktaṁ paribhuktaṁ ca yadbhavet ,
daive pitrye ca satataṁ taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.

Whatever food is offered in connection with deities or ancestors, if it consists of leftovers from others or has already been consumed, that portion is always considered to belong to the Rākṣasas (demons).
गर्हितं निन्दितं चैव परिविष्टं समन्युना ।
दैवं वाप्यथ वा पैत्र्यं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥९॥
दैवं वाप्यथ वा पैत्र्यं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥९॥
9. garhitaṁ ninditaṁ caiva pariviṣṭaṁ samanyunā ,
daivaṁ vāpyatha vā paitryaṁ taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.
daivaṁ vāpyatha vā paitryaṁ taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.

garhitam ninditam ca eva pariviṣṭam samanyunā daivam
vā api atha vā paitryam tam bhagam rakṣasām viduḥ

Whatever food is served, if it is censured, criticized, or offered by an angry person, whether it is for the deities or for the ancestors, that portion is considered to belong to the Rākṣasas (demons).
मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं यच्छ्राद्धं परिविष्यते ।
त्रिभिर्वर्णैर्नरश्रेष्ठ तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥१०॥

10. mantrahīnaṁ kriyāhīnaṁ yacchrāddhaṁ pariviṣyate ,
tribhirvarṇairnaraśreṣṭha taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.
tribhirvarṇairnaraśreṣṭha taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.
10.
mantrahīnam kriyāhīnam yat śrāddham pariviṣyate
tribhiḥ varṇaiḥ naraśreṣṭha tam bhagam rakṣasām viduḥ
tribhiḥ varṇaiḥ naraśreṣṭha tam bhagam rakṣasām viduḥ

naraśreṣṭha yat śrāddham mantrahīnam kriyāhīnam ca
tribhiḥ varṇaiḥ pariviṣyate tam bhagam rakṣasām viduḥ

O best among men, if an ancestral ritual (śrāddha) is performed devoid of sacred recitations and proper rites, and is served by the three (upper) classes, then that portion is considered to belong to the Rākṣasas (demons).
आज्याहुतिं विना चैव यत्किंचित्परिविष्यते ।
दुराचारैश्च यद्भुक्तं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥११॥
दुराचारैश्च यद्भुक्तं तं भागं रक्षसां विदुः ॥११॥
11. ājyāhutiṁ vinā caiva yatkiṁcitpariviṣyate ,
durācāraiśca yadbhuktaṁ taṁ bhāgaṁ rakṣasāṁ viduḥ.

ājyāhutim vinā ca eva yat kiñcit pariviṣyate
durācāraiḥ ca yat bhuktam tam bhagam rakṣasām viduḥ
durācāraiḥ ca yat bhuktam tam bhagam rakṣasām viduḥ

yat kiñcit ājyāhutim vinā ca eva pariviṣyate ca

Moreover, whatever is offered without a ghee offering (ājyāhuti), or whatever has been consumed by those of bad conduct, that portion is considered to belong to the Rākṣasas (demons).
ये भागा रक्षसां प्रोक्तास्त उक्ता भरतर्षभ ।
अत ऊर्ध्वं विसर्गस्य परीक्षां ब्राह्मणे शृणु ॥१२॥

12. ye bhāgā rakṣasāṁ proktāsta uktā bharatarṣabha ,
ata ūrdhvaṁ visargasya parīkṣāṁ brāhmaṇe śṛṇu.

ye bhāgāḥ rakṣasām proktāḥ te uktāḥ bharatarṣabha

bharatarṣabha ye bhāgāḥ rakṣasām proktāḥ te uktāḥ

O best among the Bhāratas, those portions declared for the Rākṣasas have been stated. From this point onward, listen to the detailed examination of offerings concerning a brahmin.
यावन्तः पतिता विप्रा जडोन्मत्तास्तथैव च ।
दैवे वाप्यथ वा पित्र्ये राजन्नार्हन्ति केतनम् ॥१३॥

13. yāvantaḥ patitā viprā jaḍonmattāstathaiva ca ,
daive vāpyatha vā pitrye rājannārhanti ketanam.

O king, however many brahmins are fallen, or those who are dull-witted and insane - they are not worthy of an invitation, whether for rituals dedicated to the gods or to the ancestors.
श्वित्री कुष्ठी च क्लीबश्च तथा यक्ष्महतश्च यः ।
अपस्मारी च यश्चान्धो राजन्नार्हन्ति सत्कृतिम् ॥१४॥

14. śvitrī kuṣṭhī ca klībaśca tathā yakṣmahataśca yaḥ ,
apasmārī ca yaścāndho rājannārhanti satkṛtim.

14.
O king, a person afflicted with leucoderma, a leper, an impotent man, and likewise one suffering from consumption, an epileptic, or a blind person - none of them deserve honor.
चिकित्सका देवलका वृथानियमधारिणः ।
सोमविक्रयिणश्चैव श्राद्धे नार्हन्ति केतनम् ॥१५॥

15. cikitsakā devalakā vṛthāniyamadhāriṇaḥ ,
somavikrayiṇaścaiva śrāddhe nārhanti ketanam.

Physicians, temple priests, those who uphold meaningless vows, and also sellers of soma (plant/juice) - they are not worthy of an invitation to a ritual dedicated to ancestors.
गायना नर्तकाश्चैव प्लवका वादकास्तथा ।
कथका योधकाश्चैव राजन्नार्हन्ति केतनम् ॥१६॥

16. gāyanā nartakāścaiva plavakā vādakāstathā ,
kathakā yodhakāścaiva rājannārhanti ketanam.

O King, singers, dancers, acrobats, musicians, storytellers, and warriors certainly do not deserve an invitation (to a ritual).
होतारो वृषलानां च वृषलाध्यापकास्तथा ।
तथा वृषलशिष्याश्च राजन्नार्हन्ति केतनम् ॥१७॥

17. hotāro vṛṣalānāṁ ca vṛṣalādhyāpakāstathā ,
tathā vṛṣalaśiṣyāśca rājannārhanti ketanam.

hotāraḥ vṛṣalānām ca vṛṣala-adhyāpakāḥ tathā
tathā vṛṣala-śiṣyāḥ ca rājan na arhanti ketanam

rājan vṛṣalānām hotāraḥ ca vṛṣala-adhyāpakāḥ
tathā tathā vṛṣala-śiṣyāḥ ca ketanam na arhanti
tathā tathā vṛṣala-śiṣyāḥ ca ketanam na arhanti
17.
O King, those who perform Vedic rituals (hotāraḥ) for śūdras, as well as teachers of śūdras, and likewise the students of śūdras, certainly do not deserve an invitation (to a ritual).
अनुयोक्ता च यो विप्रो अनुयुक्तश्च भारत ।
नार्हतस्तावपि श्राद्धं ब्रह्मविक्रयिणौ हि तौ ॥१८॥

18. anuyoktā ca yo vipro anuyuktaśca bhārata ,
nārhatastāvapi śrāddhaṁ brahmavikrayiṇau hi tau.

anuyoktā ca yaḥ vipraḥ anuyuktaḥ ca bhārata na
arhataḥ tau api śrāddham brahma-vikrayiṇau hi tau

bhārata yaḥ vipraḥ anuyoktā ca anuyuktaḥ ca tau
api śrāddham na arhataḥ hi tau brahma-vikrayiṇau

O Bhārata, the brahmin who interrogates and the brahmin who is interrogated both do not deserve an invitation to a śrāddha (ritual), for they are indeed sellers of sacred knowledge (brahman).
अग्रणीर्यः कृतः पूर्वं वर्णावरपरिग्रहः ।
ब्राह्मणः सर्वविद्योऽपि राजन्नार्हति केतनम् ॥१९॥

19. agraṇīryaḥ kṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ varṇāvaraparigrahaḥ ,
brāhmaṇaḥ sarvavidyo'pi rājannārhati ketanam.

agraṇīḥ yaḥ kṛtaḥ pūrvam varṇa-avara-parigrahaḥ

rājan yaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ pūrvam agraṇīḥ kṛtaḥ
varṇa-avara-parigrahaḥ sarva-vidyaḥ api ketanam na arhati

19.
O King, a brahmin who was previously appointed as a leader, and who associates with (lit. 'takes up') lower social classes, even if he is learned in all knowledge, does not deserve an invitation (to a ritual).
अनग्नयश्च ये विप्रा मृतनिर्यातकाश्च ये ।
स्तेनाश्च पतिताश्चैव राजन्नार्हन्ति केतनम् ॥२०॥

20. anagnayaśca ye viprā mṛtaniryātakāśca ye ,
stenāśca patitāścaiva rājannārhanti ketanam.

O King, those learned ones (vipra) who do not maintain sacred fires, those who transport the dead, thieves, and outcasts are certainly not worthy of an invitation (to a śrāddha ritual).

O Bhārata, those whose lineage is unknown, those whose ancestors belonged to an unregulated group (gaṇa), and sons born to an appointed daughter (putrikā) are not worthy of an invitation to a śrāddha ritual.

O best of Bharatas, all those whose lineage is female-led (strīpūrva), the deceitful (kāṇḍapṛṣṭha), and Brahmins who do not perform sacred recitation (ajapa) - they are certainly not worthy of an invitation to a śrāddha ritual.

O best of Bharatas, listen again to the special favor (anugraha) associated with the brahmins designated for ancestral (śrāddha) and divine (daiva) Vedic rituals, both for the giver and the receiver.

O king, even those farmers who have observed vows, are endowed with good qualities, know the Sāvitrī mantra, and perform (Vedic) rituals, are indeed fit to be invited.

O dear one, one may invite a well-born brahmin (dvija) who follows the warrior's natural law (kṣātra dharma) even in battle, but one should certainly not appoint a merchant for ancestral (śrāddha) rituals.

O best of Bharatas, whoever recites the Savitri (mantra) three times daily, lives by begging for alms, and is diligent in his religious duties, O king, he is fit to bear the banner (of a renunciant or spiritual seeker).

And whoever performs his rites at both sunrise and sunset, and likewise at sunset and sunrise, who is non-violent (ahiṃsra) and has few faults, O king, he is worthy of the banner (of a renunciant).

O best of Bharatas, indeed, a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) who is free from deceit, not given to excessive reasoning, and who is mindful, and lives by begging for alms, O king, he is worthy of the banner (of a renunciant).

O best of Bharatas, an individual who was unobservant of vows, a gambler, a thief, one who sold living beings, and even a merchant, but who subsequently partook of soma, O king, he is worthy of the banner (of a renunciant).
अर्जयित्वा धनं पूर्वं दारुणैः कृषिकर्मभिः ।
भवेत्सर्वातिथिः पश्चात्स राजन्केतनक्षमः ॥३२॥

O king, having first acquired wealth through arduous agricultural endeavors, a person who subsequently becomes a host to all (guests) is truly capable of maintaining a proper home.

अदेयं पितृदेवेभ्यो यच्च क्लैब्यादुपार्जितम् ॥३३॥

33. brahmavikrayanirdiṣṭaṁ striyā yaccārjitaṁ dhanam ,

And that wealth which is designated as (obtained by) selling sacred knowledge (brahman), and that which is earned by a woman, and that which is acquired due to impotence, is not to be given to the ancestors and gods.

न व्याहरति यद्युक्तं तस्याधर्मो गवानृतम् ॥३४॥

O best among the Bharatas, if a twice-born (dvija), while a ritual (or act) is being concluded, does not speak what is appropriate, then his transgression of natural law (adharma) is equivalent to the sin of lying about a cow.

35.
O Yudhiṣṭhira, for the ancestral ritual (śrāddha), the presence of a worthy Brahmin is the auspicious time, and likewise, readily available curd and ghee, and the waning of the moon, and any wild meat that is obtained (are also auspicious elements).
श्राद्धापवर्गे विप्रस्य स्वधा वै स्वदिता भवेत् ।
क्षत्रियस्याप्यथो ब्रूयात्प्रीयन्तां पितरस्त्विति ॥३६॥

At the completion of a śrāddha (ritual for ancestors) for a brahmin, the utterance 'svadhā' should indeed be made. For a kṣatriya, one should then say, 'May the ancestors be pleased'.

However, O Bhārata, at the conclusion of the śrāddha (ritual for ancestors) for a vaiśya, the word 'akṣayyam' (imperishable) should be pronounced. And for a śūdra, 'svasti' (well-being), O Bhārata.
पुण्याहवाचनं दैवे ब्राह्मणस्य विधीयते ।
एतदेव निरोंकारं क्षत्रियस्य विधीयते ।
वैश्यस्य चैव वक्तव्यं प्रीयन्तां देवता इति ॥३८॥

38.
The puṇyāhavācana (utterance for an auspicious day) is prescribed for a brahmin in divine (daiva) ceremonies. This very same ritual, but without the utterance of Om (oṃkāra), is prescribed for a kṣatriya. And for a vaiśya, it should be stated, 'May the deities be pleased'.
कर्मणामानुपूर्वीं च विधिपूर्वकृतं शृणु ।
जातकर्मादिकान्सर्वांस्त्रिषु वर्णेषु भारत ।
ब्रह्मक्षत्रे हि मन्त्रोक्ता वैश्यस्य च युधिष्ठिर ॥३९॥

O Bhārata, listen to the proper sequence of all rituals, beginning with jātakarma (birth ritual), which are performed according to sacred injunctions, for the three classes (varṇas). Indeed, for the brahmins and kṣatriyas, these are accompanied by sacred chants (mantras), and similarly for the vaiśya, O Yudhishthira.
विप्रस्य रशना मौञ्जी मौर्वी राजन्यगामिनी ।

O Yudhiṣṭhira, this is the constitution (dharma) regarding the girdles: the muñja girdle is for the brahmin; the mūrvā girdle is for the kṣatriya; and the balvaja girdle is specifically for the vaiśya.
दातुः प्रतिग्रहीतुश्च धर्माधर्माविमौ शृणु ।
ब्राह्मणस्यानृतेऽधर्मः प्रोक्तः पातकसंज्ञितः ।

Listen now to these aspects of right (dharma) and wrong (adharma) pertaining to both the giver and the receiver. For a brahmin, speaking untruth is declared an unrighteous act and considered a transgression (pātaka). For a kṣatriya, this offense is remembered as four times as severe, and for a vaiśya, eight times.
नान्यत्र ब्राह्मणोऽश्नीयात्पूर्वं विप्रेण केतितः ।
यवीयान्पशुहिंसायां तुल्यधर्मो भवेत्स हि ॥४२॥

A brahmin should not eat anywhere else unless first invited by another brahmin. If he does, he will indeed share the same unrighteous consequence (adharma) as one involved in animal violence.
अथ राजन्यवैश्याभ्यां यद्यश्नीयात्तु केतितः ।
यवीयान्पशुहिंसायां भागार्धं समवाप्नुयात् ॥४३॥

Now, if he eats, having been invited by a kṣatriya or a vaiśya, then he (the brahmin who accepts the invitation) would incur half the moral consequence (adharma) of animal violence.

O King, a brāhmaṇa who, without having bathed, eats at rituals for deities or ancestors, or among brāhmaṇas and others, commits a transgression (adharma) equivalent to lying about cows.
आशौचो ब्राह्मणो राजन्योऽश्नीयाद्ब्राह्मणादिषु ।
ज्ञानपूर्वमथो लोभात्तस्याधर्मो गवानृतम् ॥४५॥

O King, a brāhmaṇa who, being ritually impure (āśauca), eats among brāhmaṇas and others, knowingly and out of greed, commits a transgression (adharma) equivalent to lying about cows.
अन्नेनान्नं च यो लिप्सेत्कर्मार्थं चैव भारत ।
आमन्त्रयति राजेन्द्र तस्याधर्मोऽनृतं स्मृतम् ॥४६॥

O Bhārata, O King of kings, he who desires food by means of food, and invites (people) for the sake of an act (karma), his transgression (adharma) is considered a falsehood (anṛta).
अवेदव्रतचारित्रास्त्रिभिर्वर्णैर्युधिष्ठिर ।
मन्त्रवत्परिविष्यन्ते तेष्वधर्मो गवानृतम् ॥४७॥

O Yudhiṣṭhira, for those who do not adhere to Vedic vows and conduct, though they may be among the three higher classes (varṇa) and are served with mantras, their transgression (adharma) is equivalent to lying about cows.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
पित्र्यं वाप्यथ वा दैवं दीयते यत्पितामह ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं दत्तं येषु महाफलम् ॥४८॥

Yudhishthira said: "O Grandfather, I wish to hear this: among whom does that which is given, whether for ancestors or for the gods, yield great results?"

येषां दाराः प्रतीक्षन्ते सुवृष्टिमिव कर्षकाः ।
उच्छेषपरिशेषं हि तान्भोजय युधिष्ठिर ॥४९॥

Bhishma said: "O Yudhishthira, indeed, feed those men with the leftovers whose wives wait (for them) like farmers (wait) for good rain."
चारित्रनियता राजन्ये कृशाः कृशवृत्तयः ।
अर्थिनश्चोपगच्छन्ति तेषु दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५०॥

50. cāritraniyatā rājanye kṛśāḥ kṛśavṛttayaḥ ,

Among those kṣatriyas (rajanya) who are disciplined by good conduct, who are emaciated and have meager livelihoods, and who approach (others) as supplicants, that which is given yields great results.
तद्भक्तास्तद्गृहा राजंस्तद्धनास्तदपाश्रयाः ।
अर्थिनश्च भवन्त्यर्थे तेषु दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५१॥

51. tadbhaktāstadgṛhā rājaṁstaddhanāstadapāśrayāḥ ,

O King, among those who are devoted to the (needy) ones (mentioned previously), whose homes, wealth, and support are found with them, and who also become supplicants for material needs, that which is given yields great results.
तस्करेभ्यः परेभ्यो वा ये भयार्ता युधिष्ठिर ।
अर्थिनो भोक्तुमिच्छन्ति तेषु दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५२॥

O Yudhiṣṭhira, great merit is obtained by giving to those who, afflicted by fear from thieves or enemies, wish to eat.
अकल्ककस्य विप्रस्य भैक्षोत्करकृतात्मनः ।
बटवो यस्य भिक्षन्ति तेभ्यो दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५३॥

53. akalkakasya viprasya bhaikṣotkarakṛtātmanaḥ ,

Great merit is obtained by giving to the young students (baṭus) who beg for a guileless Brahmin whose life (ātman) is sustained by alms.
हृतस्वा हृतदाराश्च ये विप्रा देशसंप्लवे ।
अर्थार्थमभिगच्छन्ति तेभ्यो दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५४॥

54. hṛtasvā hṛtadārāśca ye viprā deśasaṁplave ,
arthārthamabhigacchanti tebhyo dattaṁ mahāphalam.

Great merit is obtained by giving to those Brahmins who, having lost their property and wives in a national disaster, approach (for help) seeking sustenance.
व्रतिनो नियमस्थाश्च ये विप्राः श्रुतसंमताः ।
तत्समाप्त्यर्थमिच्छन्ति तेषु दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५५॥

55. vratino niyamasthāśca ye viprāḥ śrutasaṁmatāḥ ,
tatsamāptyarthamicchanti teṣu dattaṁ mahāphalam.

Great merit is obtained by giving to those Brahmins who observe vows and disciplines, are respected for their sacred knowledge, and who desire (aid) for the completion of those (vows/disciplines).
अव्युत्क्रान्ताश्च धर्मेषु पाषण्डसमयेषु च ।
कृशप्राणाः कृशधनास्तेषु दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५६॥

56. avyutkrāntāśca dharmeṣu pāṣaṇḍasamayeṣu ca ,

avyutkrāntāḥ ca dharmeṣu pāṣaṇḍasamayeṣu ca

dharmeṣu ca pāṣaṇḍasamayeṣu ca avyutkrāntāḥ

56.
A great reward is obtained from a gift given to those who are steadfast in their natural law (dharma) and their religious traditions, and who are weak in vitality and poor in wealth.
कृतसर्वस्वहरणा निर्दोषाः प्रभविष्णुभिः ।
स्पृहयन्ति च भुक्तान्नं तेषु दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५७॥

57. kṛtasarvasvaharaṇā nirdoṣāḥ prabhaviṣṇubhiḥ ,
spṛhayanti ca bhuktānnaṁ teṣu dattaṁ mahāphalam.

A great reward is obtained from a gift given to those innocent people whose entire possessions have been seized by powerful individuals and who long even for leftover food.
तपस्विनस्तपोनिष्ठास्तेषां भैक्षचराश्च ये ।
अर्थिनः किंचिदिच्छन्ति तेषु दत्तं महाफलम् ॥५८॥

58. tapasvinastaponiṣṭhāsteṣāṁ bhaikṣacarāśca ye ,

A great reward is obtained from a gift given to ascetics (tapasvin) and those steadfast in their austerities (tapas), and also to mendicants who subsist on alms, as well as to petitioners who desire something.
महाफलविधिर्दाने श्रुतस्ते भरतर्षभ ।
निरयं येन गच्छन्ति स्वर्गं चैव हि तच्छृणु ॥५९॥

59. mahāphalavidhirdāne śrutaste bharatarṣabha ,
nirayaṁ yena gacchanti svargaṁ caiva hi tacchṛṇu.

O best of Bharatas, you have heard the rule concerning great rewards in acts of giving. Now, indeed, listen to that by which people go to hell, and also to heaven.
गुर्वर्थं वाभयार्थं वा वर्जयित्वा युधिष्ठिर ।
येऽनृतं कथयन्ति स्म ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥६०॥

O Yudhiṣṭhira, excluding those instances where untruth is spoken for the sake of a preceptor or for the sake of safety, those who habitually speak lies certainly go to hell.

Those who steal the property of others, and those who destroy the property of others, and those who act as informers against others, they certainly go to hell.

O Bhārata, men who destroy public water-sheds, assembly halls, bridges, and houses certainly go to hell.
अनाथां प्रमदां बालां वृद्धां भीतां तपस्विनीम् ।
वञ्चयन्ति नरा ये च ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥६४॥

Those men who deceive a helpless woman, a young girl, an old woman, a frightened woman, or an ascetic woman, they certainly go to hell.
वृत्तिच्छेदं गृहच्छेदं दारच्छेदं च भारत ।
मित्रच्छेदं तथाशायास्ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥६५॥

O Bhārata, those who cause the destruction of livelihood, home, wife, or friends, and similarly, the destruction of hope, they certainly go to hell.
सूचकाः संधिभेत्तारः परवृत्त्युपजीवकाः ।
अकृतज्ञाश्च मित्राणां ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥६६॥

Those who are informers, breakers of treaties, those who live off others' means, and those ungrateful to their friends - they certainly go to hell.
पाषण्डा दूषकाश्चैव समयानां च दूषकाः ।
ये प्रत्यवसिताश्चैव ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥६७॥

Those who are impious hypocrites, corruptors, those who defile agreements, and those who have abandoned their sacred commitments - they certainly go to hell.
कृताशं कृतनिर्वेशं कृतभक्तं कृतश्रमम् ।
भेदैर्ये व्यपकर्षन्ति ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥६८॥

68. kṛtāśaṁ kṛtanirveśaṁ kṛtabhaktaṁ kṛtaśramam ,

Those who, through divisive actions, bring down or disparage a person who has fulfilled their aspirations, discharged their duties, shown devotion, and put in diligent effort - such people are indeed destined for hell.
पर्यश्नन्ति च ये दारानग्निभृत्यातिथींस्तथा ।
उत्सन्नपितृदेवेज्यास्ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥६९॥

69. paryaśnanti ca ye dārānagnibhṛtyātithīṁstathā ,
utsannapitṛdevejyāste vai nirayagāminaḥ.

And those who consume everything themselves, neglecting to share with their wives, the sacred fire, servants, and guests, and whose rituals (ijyā) for ancestors and deities have been abandoned - they are indeed destined for hell.
वेदविक्रयिणश्चैव वेदानां चैव दूषकाः ।
वेदानां लेखकाश्चैव ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७०॥

Those who sell the Vedic scriptures, and those who corrupt or defile them, and indeed, those who merely transcribe them - they are all destined for hell.
चातुराश्रम्यबाह्याश्च श्रुतिबाह्याश्च ये नराः ।
विकर्मभिश्च जीवन्ति ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७१॥

71. cāturāśramyabāhyāśca śrutibāhyāśca ye narāḥ ,

And those individuals who are outside the four stages of life (āśramas), who disregard the Vedic tradition (śruti), and who subsist by performing prohibited actions (vikarma) - they are indeed destined for hell.
केशविक्रयिका राजन्विषविक्रयिकाश्च ये ।
क्षीरविक्रयिकाश्चैव ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७२॥

O king, those who sell hair, those who sell poison, and also those who sell milk, are indeed destined for hell.
ब्राह्मणानां गवां चैव कन्यानां च युधिष्ठिर ।
येऽन्तरं यान्ति कार्येषु ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७३॥

O Yudhiṣṭhira, those who interfere in the affairs of Brahmins, cows, and maidens are indeed destined for hell.
शस्त्रविक्रयकाश्चैव कर्तारश्च युधिष्ठिर ।
शल्यानां धनुषां चैव ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७४॥

74. śastravikrayakāścaiva kartāraśca yudhiṣṭhira ,

O Yudhiṣṭhira, those who sell weapons, and those who make darts and bows, are indeed destined for hell.
शल्यैर्वा शङ्कुभिर्वापि श्वभ्रैर्वा भरतर्षभ ।
ये मार्गमनुरुन्धन्ति ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७५॥

75. śalyairvā śaṅkubhirvāpi śvabhrairvā bharatarṣabha ,

O best of Bharatas, those who obstruct a path with darts, or with stakes, or with pits, are indeed destined for hell.
उपाध्यायांश्च भृत्यांश्च भक्तांश्च भरतर्षभ ।
ये त्यजन्त्यसमर्थांस्तांस्ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७६॥

76. upādhyāyāṁśca bhṛtyāṁśca bhaktāṁśca bharatarṣabha ,
ye tyajantyasamarthāṁstāṁste vai nirayagāminaḥ.

O best among the Bharatas, those who abandon their helpless teachers, servants, and devotees - they indeed go to hell.
अप्राप्तदमकाश्चैव नासानां वेधकास्तथा ।
बन्धकाश्च पशूनां ये ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७७॥

77. aprāptadamakāścaiva nāsānāṁ vedhakāstathā ,
bandhakāśca paśūnāṁ ye te vai nirayagāminaḥ.

Those who lack self-restraint, and also those who pierce the noses of animals, and those who capture animals - they indeed go to hell.
अगोप्तारश्छलद्रव्या बलिषड्भागतत्पराः ।
समर्थाश्चाप्यदातारस्ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७८॥

78. agoptāraśchaladravyā baliṣaḍbhāgatatparāḥ ,
samarthāścāpyadātāraste vai nirayagāminaḥ.

Those who do not protect, those who acquire property by deceit, those who are solely focused on the sixth part of offerings (taxes) without fulfilling their duties, and those who, though capable, do not give - they indeed go to hell.
क्षान्तान्दान्तांस्तथा प्राज्ञान्दीर्घकालं सहोषितान् ।
त्यजन्ति कृतकृत्या ये ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥७९॥

79. kṣāntāndāntāṁstathā prājñāndīrghakālaṁ sahoṣitān ,

tathā prājñān tyajanti te vai nirayagāminaḥ

Those who, having accomplished their purpose, abandon patient, self-controlled, and wise individuals with whom they have long resided - they indeed go to hell.
बालानामथ वृद्धानां दासानां चैव ये नराः ।
अदत्त्वा भक्षयन्त्यग्रे ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥८०॥

80. bālānāmatha vṛddhānāṁ dāsānāṁ caiva ye narāḥ ,

Indeed, those people who eat first without having given food to children, the elderly, and their servants, they are verily destined for hell.
एते पूर्वर्षिभिर्दृष्टाः प्रोक्ता निरयगामिनः ।
भागिनः स्वर्गलोकस्य वक्ष्यामि भरतर्षभ ॥८१॥

These types of people have been observed by the ancient seers and declared to be destined for hell. O best of Bharatas (Bharatārṣabha), I will now describe those who partake in the celestial worlds.
सर्वेष्वेव तु कार्येषु दैवपूर्वेषु भारत ।
हन्ति पुत्रान्पशून्कृत्स्नान्ब्राह्मणातिक्रमः कृतः ॥८२॥

82. sarveṣveva tu kāryeṣu daivapūrveṣu bhārata ,

O Bhārata, in all undertakings, especially those preceded by divine influence, a transgression committed against a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) destroys all one's children and cattle.

O Bhārata, those people who, having acquired knowledge through devoted service and spiritual austerities (tapas), are free from any attachment to receiving gifts, those people attain heaven.

Those people, by virtue of whose actions they are freed from fear, sin, trouble, poverty, and the oppression of disease, are the ones who attain heaven.

And those who are forgiving and resolute, and who are engaged in their duties according to natural law (dharma), and are endowed with auspicious conduct, those people attain heaven.

Those people who have abstained from honey and meat, and from other men's wives, and also truly refrained from intoxicating drinks, those people attain heaven.

O Bhārata, those men who establish hermitages (āśrama) and families, as well as countries and cities, they are the ones who attain heaven.

Those who provide clothes and ornaments, as well as food, drink, and grains, and those who support families, those men certainly attain heaven.

Those men who, with controlled senses, serve their mother and father, and who are affectionate towards their brothers, they are the ones who attain heaven.

O Bhārata, those men who are wealthy, strong, and youthful, and who are indeed self-controlled and resolute, they go to heaven.

Those men who are affectionate even towards offenders, gentle, devoted to friends, and easily pleased, they attain heaven.

Those men who protect thousands, and likewise bestow thousands, and are saviors of thousands, attain heaven.

O best of Bharatas, those men who are donors of gold, cows, vehicles, and mounts, they attain heaven.

O Bhārata, those people who provide settlements, fields, and residences, and also give what is requested, indeed go to heaven.

O Yudhishthira, those persons who, having produced them themselves, give juices, seeds, and grains, indeed go to heaven.

सानुक्रोशा जितक्रोधाः पुरुषाः स्वर्गगामिनः ॥१००॥

Men born in any family whatsoever, who have many sons, are long-lived, compassionate, and have conquered anger, ascend to heaven.

धर्माधर्मौ च दानस्य यथा पूर्वर्षिभिः कृतौ ॥१०१॥

O Bhārata, this has been stated regarding the otherworldly purpose of both divine and ancestral (Vedic ritual) rites. Similarly, the righteousness (dharma) and unrighteousness of charity (dāna) were established by the ancient sages.
