वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्ते नृपतौ तस्मिन्व्यासेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ।
वासुदेवो महातेजास्ततो वचनमाददे ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityukte nṛpatau tasminvyāsenādbhutakarmaṇā ,
vāsudevo mahātejāstato vacanamādade.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: When that was thus spoken to the king by Vyāsa, who performed wondrous deeds, then the greatly effulgent Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) began to speak.
तं नृपं दीनमनसं निहतज्ञातिबान्धवम् ।
उपप्लुतमिवादित्यं सधूममिव पावकम् ॥२॥
2. taṁ nṛpaṁ dīnamanasaṁ nihatajñātibāndhavam ,
upaplutamivādityaṁ sadhūmamiva pāvakam.
2. tam nṛpam dīnamanasam nihatajñātibāndhavam
upaplutam iva ādityam sadhūmam iva pāvakam
2. tam nṛpam dīnamanasam,
nihatajñātibāndhavam,
upaplutam ādityam iva,

2. - that king whose mind was dejected, whose kinsmen and relatives had been slain, who was like the sun obscured (by an eclipse) and like a fire enveloped in smoke.
निर्विण्णमनसं पार्थं ज्ञात्वा वृष्णिकुलोद्वहः ।
आश्वासयन्धर्मसुतं प्रवक्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥३॥
3. nirviṇṇamanasaṁ pārthaṁ jñātvā vṛṣṇikulodvahaḥ ,
āśvāsayandharmasutaṁ pravaktumupacakrame.

āśvāsayān dharmasutam pravaktum upacakrame

3. Understanding Arjuna to be dejected, the upholder of the Vṛṣṇi clan (Kṛṣṇa) began to console the son of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira) and to speak.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
सर्वं जिह्मं मृत्युपदमार्जवं ब्रह्मणः पदम् ।
एतावाञ्ज्ञानविषयः किं प्रलापः करिष्यति ॥४॥
4. vāsudeva uvāca ,
sarvaṁ jihmaṁ mṛtyupadamārjavaṁ brahmaṇaḥ padam ,
etāvāñjñānaviṣayaḥ kiṁ pralāpaḥ kariṣyati.

padam etāvān jñānaviṣayaḥ kim pralāpaḥ kariṣyati

4. Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) said: All crookedness is the path to death, while straightforwardness is the state of brahman. This much is the scope of true knowledge; what will useless talk accomplish?
नैव ते निष्ठितं कर्म नैव ते शत्रवो जिताः ।
कथं शत्रुं शरीरस्थमात्मानं नावबुध्यसे ॥५॥
5. naiva te niṣṭhitaṁ karma naiva te śatravo jitāḥ ,
kathaṁ śatruṁ śarīrasthamātmānaṁ nāvabudhyase.
5. na eva te niṣṭhitam karma na eva te śatravaḥ jitāḥ
katham śatrum śarīrastham ātmānam na avabudhyase
5. te karma naiva niṣṭhitam,
te śatravaḥ naiva jitāḥ katham śarīrastham śatrum ātmānam na avabudhyase
5. Neither is your action (karma) completed, nor are your enemies vanquished. How is it that you do not recognize the enemy residing within your body as your own self (ātman)?
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथाधर्मं यथाश्रुतम् ।
इन्द्रस्य सह वृत्रेण यथा युद्धमवर्तत ॥६॥
6. atra te vartayiṣyāmi yathādharmaṁ yathāśrutam ,
indrasya saha vṛtreṇa yathā yuddhamavartata.

indrasya saha vṛtreṇa yathā yuddham avartata
6. atra te yathādhamam yathāśrutam vartayiṣyāmi

6. In this regard, I will relate to you, in accordance with the constitution (dharma) and as it has been heard (from tradition), how the battle between Indra and Vṛtra transpired.
वृत्रेण पृथिवी व्याप्ता पुरा किल नराधिप ।
दृष्ट्वा स पृथिवीं व्याप्तां गन्धस्य विषये हृते ।
धराहरणदुर्गन्धो विषयः समपद्यत ॥७॥
7. vṛtreṇa pṛthivī vyāptā purā kila narādhipa ,
dṛṣṭvā sa pṛthivīṁ vyāptāṁ gandhasya viṣaye hṛte ,
dharāharaṇadurgandho viṣayaḥ samapadyata.
7. vṛtreṇa pṛthivī vyāptā purā kila
narādhipa dṛṣṭvā saḥ pṛthivīṃ
vyāptām gandhasya viṣaye hṛte
dharāharaṇadurgandhaḥ viṣayaḥ samapadyata
7. O King, in ancient times, Vṛtra had completely enveloped the earth, it is said. When he saw the earth thus pervaded, and with the domain of fragrance taken away, that sphere (of earth) became filled with the foul odor resulting from its seizure.
शतक्रतुश्चुकोपाथ गन्धस्य विषये हृते ।
वृत्रस्य स ततः क्रुद्धो वज्रं घोरमवासृजत् ॥८॥
8. śatakratuścukopātha gandhasya viṣaye hṛte ,
vṛtrasya sa tataḥ kruddho vajraṁ ghoramavāsṛjat.
8. śatakratuḥ cukopa atha gandhasya viṣaye hṛte
vṛtrasya saḥ tataḥ kruddhaḥ vajram ghoram avāsṛjat
8. Then, when the domain of fragrance had been seized, Indra (śatakratu) became enraged. Infuriated at Vṛtra, he then discharged his terrible thunderbolt.
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण पृथिव्यां भूरितेजसा ।
विवेश सहसैवापो जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥९॥
9. sa vadhyamāno vajreṇa pṛthivyāṁ bhūritejasā ,
viveśa sahasaivāpo jagrāha viṣayaṁ tataḥ.
9. saḥ vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa pṛthivyām bhūritejasā
viveśa sahasā eva āpaḥ jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ
9. While being struck by the extremely powerful thunderbolt on earth, Vṛtra suddenly entered the waters. He then seized their domain.
व्याप्तास्वथाप्सु वृत्रेण रसे च विषये हृते ।
शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तासु वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१०॥
10. vyāptāsvathāpsu vṛtreṇa rase ca viṣaye hṛte ,
śatakraturabhikruddhastāsu vajramavāsṛjat.
10. vyāptāsu atha apsu vṛtreṇa rase ca viṣaye hṛte
śatakratuḥ abhikruddhaḥ tāsu vajram avāsṛjat
10. Then, when the waters were also pervaded by Vṛtra, and the domain of taste had been seized, Indra (śatakratu) became greatly enraged and hurled the thunderbolt into those waters.
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण सलिले भूरितेजसा ।
विवेश सहसा ज्योतिर्जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥११॥
11. sa vadhyamāno vajreṇa salile bhūritejasā ,
viveśa sahasā jyotirjagrāha viṣayaṁ tataḥ.
11. saḥ vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa salile bhūritejasā
viveśa sahasā jyotiḥ jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ
11. saḥ salile bhūritejasā vajreṇa vadhyamānaḥ sahasā jyotiḥ viveśa tataḥ viṣayam jagrāha.
11. As he was being struck in the water by the immensely powerful thunderbolt, he suddenly entered the element of light (jyotis) and then took possession of its sphere.
व्याप्ते ज्योतिषि वृत्रेण रूपेऽथ विषये हृते ।
शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तत्र वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१२॥
12. vyāpte jyotiṣi vṛtreṇa rūpe'tha viṣaye hṛte ,
śatakraturabhikruddhastatra vajramavāsṛjat.
12. vyāpte jyotiṣi vṛtreṇa rūpe atha viṣaye hṛte
śatakratuḥ abhikruddhaḥ tatra vajram avāsṛjat
12. jyotiṣi rūpe atha viṣaye vṛtreṇa vyāpte hṛte śatakratuḥ abhikruddhaḥ tatra vajram avāsṛjat.
12. When the element of light (jyotis), along with its inherent nature and its sphere, had been pervaded and seized by Vṛtra, Indra (śatakratuḥ), becoming extremely enraged, then discharged the thunderbolt there.
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण सुभृशं भूरितेजसा ।
विवेश सहसा वायुं जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१३॥
13. sa vadhyamāno vajreṇa subhṛśaṁ bhūritejasā ,
viveśa sahasā vāyuṁ jagrāha viṣayaṁ tataḥ.
13. saḥ vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa subhṛśam bhūritejasā
viveśa sahasā vāyum jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ
13. saḥ subhṛśam bhūritejasā vajreṇa vadhyamānaḥ sahasā vāyum viveśa tataḥ viṣayam jagrāha.
13. As he was being exceedingly struck by the immensely powerful thunderbolt, he suddenly entered the element of air (vāyu) and then took possession of its sphere.
व्याप्ते वायौ तु वृत्रेण स्पर्शेऽथ विषये हृते ।
शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तत्र वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१४॥
14. vyāpte vāyau tu vṛtreṇa sparśe'tha viṣaye hṛte ,
śatakraturabhikruddhastatra vajramavāsṛjat.
14. vyāpte vāyau tu vṛtreṇa sparśe atha viṣaye hṛte
śatakratuḥ abhikruddhaḥ tatra vajram avāsṛjat
14. vāyau sparśe atha viṣaye vṛtreṇa vyāpte hṛte tu śatakratuḥ abhikruddhaḥ tatra vajram avāsṛjat.
14. When the element of air (vāyu), along with its quality of touch (sparśa) and its sphere, had been pervaded and seized by Vṛtra, Indra (śatakratuḥ), becoming extremely enraged, then discharged the thunderbolt there.
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण तस्मिन्नमिततेजसा ।
आकाशमभिदुद्राव जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१५॥
15. sa vadhyamāno vajreṇa tasminnamitatejasā ,
ākāśamabhidudrāva jagrāha viṣayaṁ tataḥ.
15. saḥ vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa tasmin amitatejasā
ākāśam abhidudrāva jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ
15. saḥ amitatejasā vajreṇa vadhyamānaḥ tasmin
tataḥ ākāśam abhidudrāva viṣayam jagrāha
15. As he (Vṛtra) was being struck by that thunderbolt, wielded by the immensely powerful (Indra), he then fled to the sky and seized its domain.
आकाशे वृत्रभूते च शब्दे च विषये हृते ।
शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तत्र वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१६॥
16. ākāśe vṛtrabhūte ca śabde ca viṣaye hṛte ,
śatakraturabhikruddhastatra vajramavāsṛjat.
16. ākāśe vṛtrabhūte ca śabde ca viṣaye hṛte
śatakratuḥ abhikruddhaḥ tatra vajram avāsṛjat
16. ākāśe vṛtrabhūte ca śabde ca viṣaye hṛte
śatakratuḥ abhikruddhaḥ tatra vajram avāsṛjat
16. When the sky itself became Vṛtra and the domain of sound was absorbed, Indra (śatakratuḥ), becoming greatly enraged, then hurled his thunderbolt.
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण तस्मिन्नमिततेजसा ।
विवेश सहसा शक्रं जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१७॥
17. sa vadhyamāno vajreṇa tasminnamitatejasā ,
viveśa sahasā śakraṁ jagrāha viṣayaṁ tataḥ.
17. saḥ vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa tasmin amitatejasā
viveśa sahasā śakram jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ
17. saḥ amitatejasā vajreṇa vadhyamānaḥ tasmin
sahasā śakram viveśa tataḥ viṣayam jagrāha
17. As he (Vṛtra) was being struck by that thunderbolt, wielded by the immensely powerful (Indra), he suddenly entered into Indra (śakra) and then seized his domain.
तस्य वृत्रगृहीतस्य मोहः समभवन्महान् ।
रथंतरेण तं तात वसिष्ठः प्रत्यबोधयत् ॥१८॥
18. tasya vṛtragṛhītasya mohaḥ samabhavanmahān ,
rathaṁtareṇa taṁ tāta vasiṣṭhaḥ pratyabodhayat.
18. tasya vṛtragṛhītasya mohaḥ samabhavat mahān
rathaṃtareṇa tam tāta vasiṣṭhaḥ pratyabodhayaṭ
18. tāta vṛtragṛhītasya tasya mahān mohaḥ samabhavat
vasiṣṭhaḥ rathaṃtareṇa tam pratyabodhayaṭ
18. A great delusion overtook him (Indra) who had been seized by Vṛtra. Then, O dear one, Vasiṣṭha awakened him by means of the Rathantara chant.
ततो वृत्रं शरीरस्थं जघान भरतर्षभ ।
शतक्रतुरदृश्येन वज्रेणेतीह नः श्रुतम् ॥१९॥
19. tato vṛtraṁ śarīrasthaṁ jaghāna bharatarṣabha ,
śatakraturadṛśyena vajreṇetīha naḥ śrutam.
19. tataḥ vṛtram śarīrastham jaghāna bharatarṣabha
śatakratuḥ adṛśyena vajreṇa iti iha naḥ śrutam
19. bharatarṣabha tataḥ śatakratuḥ śarīrastham vṛtram
adṛśyena vajreṇa jaghāna iti iha naḥ śrutam
19. O best of Bharatas, it is heard by us here that Indra (śatakratu) then killed Vṛtra, who was dwelling in his body, with an invisible thunderbolt.
इदं धर्मरहस्यं च शक्रेणोक्तं महर्षिषु ।
ऋषिभिश्च मम प्रोक्तं तन्निबोध नराधिप ॥२०॥
20. idaṁ dharmarahasyaṁ ca śakreṇoktaṁ maharṣiṣu ,
ṛṣibhiśca mama proktaṁ tannibodha narādhipa.
20. idam dharmarahasyam ca śakreṇa uktam maharṣiṣu
ṛṣibhiḥ ca mama proktam tat nibodha narādhipa
20. narādhipa idam dharmarahasyam śakreṇa maharṣiṣu
uktam ca ṛṣibhiḥ mama ca proktam tat nibodha
20. O lord of men (narādhipa), this secret of the natural law (dharma) was spoken by Indra (śakra) among the great sages, and it was also told to me by the sages. Learn that now.
