लोमश उवाच ।
धनंजयेन चाप्युक्तं यत्तच्छृणु युधिष्ठिर ।
युधिष्ठिरं भ्रातरं मे योजयेर्धर्म्यया श्रिया ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
dhanaṁjayena cāpyuktaṁ yattacchṛṇu yudhiṣṭhira ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ bhrātaraṁ me yojayerdharmyayā śriyā.
1. lomaśaḥ uvāca dhanaṃjayena ca api uktam yat tat śṛṇu
yudhiṣṭhira yudhiṣṭhiram bhrātaram me yojayeḥ dharmyayā śriyā
1. Lomasa said: "Listen, Yudhiṣṭhira, to what Dhanaṃjaya has also said: 'You should unite my brother Yudhiṣṭhira with righteous (dharma) prosperity (śrī).' "
त्वं हि धर्मान्परान्वेत्थ तपांसि च तपोधन ।
श्रीमतां चापि जानासि राज्ञां धर्मं सनातनम् ॥२॥
2. tvaṁ hi dharmānparānvettha tapāṁsi ca tapodhana ,
śrīmatāṁ cāpi jānāsi rājñāṁ dharmaṁ sanātanam.
2. tvam hi dharmān parān vettha tapāṃsi ca tapodhana
śrīmatām ca api jānāsi rājñām dharmam sanātanam
2. Indeed, you know the highest (parā) natural laws (dharma) and austerities (tapas), O possessor of austerity (tapas)! And you also know the eternal (sanātana) natural law (dharma) of prosperous (śrīmat) kings.
स भवान्यत्परं वेद पावनं पुरुषान्प्रति ।
तेन संयोजयेथास्त्वं तीर्थपुण्येन पाण्डवम् ॥३॥
3. sa bhavānyatparaṁ veda pāvanaṁ puruṣānprati ,
tena saṁyojayethāstvaṁ tīrthapuṇyena pāṇḍavam.
3. sa bhavān yat param veda pāvanam puruṣān prati
tena saṃyojayethāḥ tvam tīrthapuṇyena pāṇḍavam
3. Revered sir, you should connect this Pāṇḍava with that supreme purifying merit (puṇya) from sacred places (tīrtha) that you know to be beneficial for human beings.
यथा तीर्थानि गच्छेत गाश्च दद्यात्स पार्थिवः ।
तथा सर्वात्मना कार्यमिति मां विजयोऽब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. yathā tīrthāni gaccheta gāśca dadyātsa pārthivaḥ ,
tathā sarvātmanā kāryamiti māṁ vijayo'bravīt.
4. yathā tīrthāni gaccheta gāḥ ca dadyāt saḥ pārthivaḥ
tathā sarvā́tmanā kāryam iti mām vijayaḥ abravīt
4. Vijaya told me, 'Just as that king (Pāṇḍava) should go to sacred places (tīrtha) and donate cows, so too must this task be accomplished wholeheartedly.'
भवता चानुगुप्तोऽसौ चरेत्तीर्थानि सर्वशः ।
रक्षोभ्यो रक्षितव्यश्च दुर्गेषु विषमेषु च ॥५॥
5. bhavatā cānugupto'sau carettīrthāni sarvaśaḥ ,
rakṣobhyo rakṣitavyaśca durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca.
5. bhavatā ca anuguptaḥ asau caret tīrthāni sarvaśaḥ
rakṣobhyaḥ rakṣitavyaḥ ca durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca
5. Protected by you, he should visit all sacred places (tīrtha) everywhere. Furthermore, he should be safeguarded from rākṣasas in difficult and rugged regions.
दधीच इव देवेन्द्रं यथा चाप्यङ्गिरा रविम् ।
तथा रक्षस्व कौन्तेयं राक्षसेभ्यो द्विजोत्तम ॥६॥
6. dadhīca iva devendraṁ yathā cāpyaṅgirā ravim ,
tathā rakṣasva kaunteyaṁ rākṣasebhyo dvijottama.
6. dadīcaḥ iva devendram yathā ca api aṅgirā ravim
tathā rakṣasva kaunteyam rākṣasebhyaḥ dvijottama
6. O best among the twice-born (dvijottama), just as Dadīci protected the king of devas (Devendra), and as Aṅgirā protected the sun (Ravi), so too should you protect the son of Kuntī from rākṣasas.
यातुधाना हि बहवो राक्षसाः पर्वतोपमाः ।
त्वयाभिगुप्तान्कौन्तेयान्नातिवर्तेयुरन्तिकात् ॥७॥
7. yātudhānā hi bahavo rākṣasāḥ parvatopamāḥ ,
tvayābhiguptānkaunteyānnātivarteyurantikāt.
7. yātudhānāḥ hi bahavaḥ rākṣasāḥ parvatopamāḥ
tvayā abhiguptān kaunteyān na ativarteyuḥ antikāt
7. Indeed, many demons (rākṣasāḥ), who are like mountains, would not be able to overcome the Pāṇḍavas, who are protected by you, from nearby.
सोऽहमिन्द्रस्य वचनान्नियोगादर्जुनस्य च ।
रक्षमाणो भयेभ्यस्त्वां चरिष्यामि त्वया सह ॥८॥
8. so'hamindrasya vacanānniyogādarjunasya ca ,
rakṣamāṇo bhayebhyastvāṁ cariṣyāmi tvayā saha.
8. saḥ aham indrasya vacanāt niyogāt arjunasya ca
rakṣamāṇaḥ bhayebhyaḥ tvām cariṣyāmi tvayā saha
8. Therefore, I, protecting you from dangers by the command of Indra and also by the instruction of Arjuna, will wander with you.
द्विस्तीर्थानि मया पूर्वं दृष्टानि कुरुनन्दन ।
इदं तृतीयं द्रक्ष्यामि तान्येव भवता सह ॥९॥
9. dvistīrthāni mayā pūrvaṁ dṛṣṭāni kurunandana ,
idaṁ tṛtīyaṁ drakṣyāmi tānyeva bhavatā saha.
9. dviḥ tīrthāni mayā pūrvam dṛṣṭāni kurunandana
idam tṛtīyam drakṣyāmi tāni eva bhavatā saha
9. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), twice before have sacred places (tīrthāni) been seen by me. Now, this third time, I will see those very same sacred places with you.
इयं राजर्षिभिर्याता पुण्यकृद्भिर्युधिष्ठिर ।
मन्वादिभिर्महाराज तीर्थयात्रा भयापहा ॥१०॥
10. iyaṁ rājarṣibhiryātā puṇyakṛdbhiryudhiṣṭhira ,
manvādibhirmahārāja tīrthayātrā bhayāpahā.
10. iyam rājarṣibhiḥ yātā puṇyakṛdbhiḥ yudhiṣṭhira
manu-ādibhiḥ mahārāja tīrthayātrā bhayāpahā
10. O Yudhiṣṭhira, O great king, this pilgrimage to sacred places (tīrthayātrā), which removes fear, has been undertaken by royal sages (rājarṣibhiḥ) who performed meritorious deeds, by Manu and others.
नानृजुर्नाकृतात्मा च नावैद्यो न च पापकृत् ।
स्नाति तीर्थेषु कौरव्य न च वक्रमतिर्नरः ॥११॥
11. nānṛjurnākṛtātmā ca nāvaidyo na ca pāpakṛt ,
snāti tīrtheṣu kauravya na ca vakramatirnaraḥ.
11. na anṛjuḥ na akṛtātmā ca na avaidyaḥ na ca pāpakṛt
snāti tīrtheṣu kauravya na ca vakramatiḥ naraḥ
11. O Kaurava, a man who is dishonest, whose inner self (ātman) is uncultivated, who is ignorant, who commits sinful acts, or whose intellect is perverse, does not truly bathe in sacred bathing places (tīrtha).
त्वं तु धर्ममतिर्नित्यं धर्मज्ञः सत्यसंगरः ।
विमुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यो भूय एव भविष्यसि ॥१२॥
12. tvaṁ tu dharmamatirnityaṁ dharmajñaḥ satyasaṁgaraḥ ,
vimuktaḥ sarvapāpebhyo bhūya eva bhaviṣyasi.
12. tvam tu dharmamatiḥ nityam dharmajñaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ
vimuktaḥ sarvapāpebhyaḥ bhūya eva bhaviṣyasi
12. But you, who are always intent on righteousness (dharma), a knower of natural law (dharma), and firm in your truthful resolve, will again be completely liberated from all sins.
यथा भगीरथो राजा राजानश्च गयादयः ।
यथा ययातिः कौन्तेय तथा त्वमपि पाण्डव ॥१३॥
13. yathā bhagīratho rājā rājānaśca gayādayaḥ ,
yathā yayātiḥ kaunteya tathā tvamapi pāṇḍava.
13. yathā bhagīrathaḥ rājā rājānaḥ ca gayādayaḥ
yathā yayātiḥ kaunteya tathā tvam api pāṇḍava
13. O son of Kuntī, O Pāṇḍava, just as King Bhagīratha, and kings like Gayā and others, and just as King Yayāti, so too shall you be.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
न हर्षात्संप्रपश्यामि वाक्यस्यास्योत्तरं क्वचित् ।
स्मरेद्धि देवराजो यं किं नामाभ्यधिकं ततः ॥१४॥
14. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
na harṣātsaṁprapaśyāmi vākyasyāsyottaraṁ kvacit ,
smareddhi devarājo yaṁ kiṁ nāmābhyadhikaṁ tataḥ.
14. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca na harṣāt
samprapaśyāmi vākyasya asya
uttaram kvacit smaret hi devarājaḥ
yam kim nāma abhyadhikam tataḥ
14. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'I am so overcome with joy that I cannot find an appropriate reply to this statement anywhere. What indeed could be greater than that person or state which even the king of the gods (Devendra) would recall with esteem?'
भवता संगमो यस्य भ्राता यस्य धनंजयः ।
वासवः स्मरते यस्य को नामाभ्यधिकस्ततः ॥१५॥
15. bhavatā saṁgamo yasya bhrātā yasya dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
vāsavaḥ smarate yasya ko nāmābhyadhikastataḥ.
15. bhavatā saṅgamaḥ yasya bhrātā yasya dhanañjayaḥ
vāsavaḥ smarate yasya kaḥ nāma abhyadhikaḥ tataḥ
15. Whose association is with you, whose brother is Arjuna (Dhanañjaya), and whom even Indra (Vāsava) remembers - who, indeed, can be superior to him?
यच्च मां भगवानाह तीर्थानां दर्शनं प्रति ।
धौम्यस्य वचनादेषा बुद्धिः पूर्वं कृतैव मे ॥१६॥
16. yacca māṁ bhagavānāha tīrthānāṁ darśanaṁ prati ,
dhaumyasya vacanādeṣā buddhiḥ pūrvaṁ kṛtaiva me.
16. yat ca mām bhagavān āha tīrthānām darśanam prati
dhaumyasya vacanāt eṣā buddhiḥ pūrvam kṛtā eva me
16. And as for what your venerable self (Bhagavān) told me about visiting holy places (tīrtha), this decision was already made by me previously, based on Dhaumya's instruction.
तद्यदा मन्यसे ब्रह्मन्गमनं तीर्थदर्शने ।
तदैव गन्तास्मि दृढमेष मे निश्चयः परः ॥१७॥
17. tadyadā manyase brahmangamanaṁ tīrthadarśane ,
tadaiva gantāsmi dṛḍhameṣa me niścayaḥ paraḥ.
17. tat yadā manyase brahman gamanam tīrthadarśane
tadā eva gantā asmi dṛḍham eṣaḥ me niścayaḥ paraḥ
17. Therefore, O Brahmin (Brahman), whenever you deem it appropriate for me to undertake a pilgrimage to holy places (tīrtha), I shall certainly go then. This is my supreme and firm resolve.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गमने कृतबुद्धिं तं पाण्डवं लोमशोऽब्रवीत् ।
लघुर्भव महाराज लघुः स्वैरं गमिष्यसि ॥१८॥
18. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gamane kṛtabuddhiṁ taṁ pāṇḍavaṁ lomaśo'bravīt ,
laghurbhava mahārāja laghuḥ svairaṁ gamiṣyasi.
18. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca gamane kṛtabuddhim tam pāṇḍavam lomaśaḥ
abravīt laghuḥ bhava mahārāja laghuḥ svairam gamiṣyasi
18. Vaiśampāyana said: To that Pāṇḍava (Yudhishthira), whose mind was set on departing, Lomasha said: 'Be unburdened, O great king! You will journey with ease and swiftly.'
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
बिक्षाभुजो निवर्तन्तां ब्राह्मणा यतयश्च ये ।
ये चाप्यनुगताः पौरा राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
bikṣābhujo nivartantāṁ brāhmaṇā yatayaśca ye ,
ye cāpyanugatāḥ paurā rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ.
19. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca bhikṣābhujas nivartantām brāhmaṇā
yatayas ca ye ye ca api anugatāḥ paurā rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ
19. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "Let those who subsist on alms, the brahmins, and the ascetics return. And also those citizens who have followed, motivated by their loyalty (bhakti) to the king."
धृतराष्ट्रं महाराजमभिगच्छन्तु चैव ते ।
स दास्यति यथाकालमुचिता यस्य या भृतिः ॥२०॥
20. dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahārājamabhigacchantu caiva te ,
sa dāsyati yathākālamucitā yasya yā bhṛtiḥ.
20. dhṛtarāṣṭram mahārājam abhigacchantu ca eva te
sa dāsyati yathākālam ucitā yasya yā bhṛtiḥ
20. And let them go to the great King Dhṛtarāṣṭra. He will provide, at the appropriate time, whatever sustenance is due to each of them.
स चेद्यथोचितां वृत्तिं न दद्यान्मनुजेश्वरः ।
अस्मत्प्रियहितार्थाय पाञ्चाल्यो वः प्रदास्यति ॥२१॥
21. sa cedyathocitāṁ vṛttiṁ na dadyānmanujeśvaraḥ ,
asmatpriyahitārthāya pāñcālyo vaḥ pradāsyati.
21. sa cet yathāucitām vṛttim na dadyāt manujeśvaraḥ
asmatpriyahitārthāya pāñcālyas vaḥ pradāsyati
21. If that lord of men (manujeśvara) does not provide the proper maintenance (vṛtti), then Pañcālya will provide for you, for our well-being and benefit.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो भूयिष्ठशः पौरा गुरुभारसमाहिताः ।
विप्राश्च यतयो युक्ता जग्मुर्नागपुरं प्रति ॥२२॥
22. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato bhūyiṣṭhaśaḥ paurā gurubhārasamāhitāḥ ,
viprāśca yatayo yuktā jagmurnāgapuraṁ prati.
22. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tatas bhūyiṣṭhaśas paurā gurubhārasamāhitāḥ
viprāḥ ca yatayas yuktāḥ jagmuḥ nāgapuram prati
22. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Then, a great many citizens, burdened with a heavy load, along with brahmins and composed ascetics, went towards Nāgāpura (Hastinapura)."
तान्सर्वान्धर्मराजस्य प्रेम्णा राजाम्बिकासुतः ।
प्रतिजग्राह विधिवद्धनैश्च समतर्पयत् ॥२३॥
23. tānsarvāndharmarājasya premṇā rājāmbikāsutaḥ ,
pratijagrāha vidhivaddhanaiśca samatarpayat.
23. tān sarvān dharmarājasya premṇā rājā ambikāsutaḥ
pratijagrāha vidhivat dhanaiḥ ca samatarpayat
23. King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā, lovingly received all those who belonged to the King of Righteousness (dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira) and properly gratified them with wealth.
ततः कुन्तीसुतो राजा लघुभिर्ब्राह्मणैः सह ।
लोमशेन च सुप्रीतस्त्रिरात्रं काम्यकेऽवसत् ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ kuntīsuto rājā laghubhirbrāhmaṇaiḥ saha ,
lomaśena ca suprītastrirātraṁ kāmyake'vasat.
24. tataḥ kuntīsutaḥ rājā laghubhiḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ saha
lomaśena ca suprītaḥ trirātram kāmyake avasat
24. Then, the son of Kunti, King Yudhiṣṭhira, very pleased, resided in the Kamyaka forest for three nights with a few Brāhmaṇas and with Lomaśa.
