गन्धर्व उवाच ।
आश्रमस्था ततः पुत्रमदृश्यन्ती व्यजायत ।
शक्तेः कुलकरं राजन्द्वितीयमिव शक्तिनम् ॥१॥
1. gandharva uvāca ,
āśramasthā tataḥ putramadṛśyantī vyajāyata ,
śakteḥ kulakaraṁ rājandvitīyamiva śaktinam.

vyajāyata śakteḥ kulakaram rājan dvitīyam iva śaktinam
1. The Gandharva said: 'Then, dwelling in the hermitage (āśrama), Adṛśyantī gave birth to a son, O King, who was the progenitor of (Śakti's) lineage, as if a second Śaktin.'
जातकर्मादिकास्तस्य क्रियाः स मुनिपुंगवः ।
पौत्रस्य भरतश्रेष्ठ चकार भगवान्स्वयम् ॥२॥
2. jātakarmādikāstasya kriyāḥ sa munipuṁgavaḥ ,
pautrasya bharataśreṣṭha cakāra bhagavānsvayam.
2. jātakarādikāḥ tasya kriyāḥ saḥ munipuṅgavaḥ
pautrasya bharataśreṣṭha cakāra bhagavān svayam
2. O best of the Bharatas, that venerable, foremost sage himself performed the Jātakarman and other rites for his grandson.
परासुश्च यतस्तेन वसिष्ठः स्थापितस्तदा ।
गर्भस्थेन ततो लोके पराशर इति स्मृतः ॥३॥
3. parāsuśca yatastena vasiṣṭhaḥ sthāpitastadā ,
garbhasthena tato loke parāśara iti smṛtaḥ.
3. parāsuḥ ca yataḥ tena vasiṣṭhaḥ sthāpitaḥ tadā
garbhasthana tataḥ loke parāśaraḥ iti smṛtaḥ
3. Because Vasiṣṭha, who was as good as dead (parāsu), was then sustained by him while still in the womb, therefore, he became known in the world as Parāśara.
अमन्यत स धर्मात्मा वसिष्ठं पितरं तदा ।
जन्मप्रभृति तस्मिंश्च पितरीव व्यवर्तत ॥४॥
4. amanyata sa dharmātmā vasiṣṭhaṁ pitaraṁ tadā ,
janmaprabhṛti tasmiṁśca pitarīva vyavartata.
4. amanyata saḥ dharmātmā vasiṣṭham pitaram tadā
janmaprabhṛti tasmin ca pitari iva vyavartata
4. That righteous soul (dharma-ātman) Parāśara then considered Vasiṣṭha his father. And from birth onwards, he behaved towards him just like a father.
स तात इति विप्रर्षिं वसिष्ठं प्रत्यभाषत ।
मातुः समक्षं कौन्तेय अदृश्यन्त्याः परंतप ॥५॥
5. sa tāta iti viprarṣiṁ vasiṣṭhaṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
mātuḥ samakṣaṁ kaunteya adṛśyantyāḥ paraṁtapa.
5. saḥ tāta iti viprarṣim vasiṣṭham pratyabhāṣata
mātuḥ samakṣam kaunteya adṛśyantyāḥ paraṁtapa
5. O son of Kuntī, tormentor of foes, he (Parāśara) addressed the brahmin sage (viprarṣi) Vasiṣṭha as "father" in the presence of his mother, Adṛśyantī.
तातेति परिपूर्णार्थं तस्य तन्मधुरं वचः ।
अदृश्यन्त्यश्रुपूर्णाक्षी शृण्वन्ती तमुवाच ह ॥६॥
6. tāteti paripūrṇārthaṁ tasya tanmadhuraṁ vacaḥ ,
adṛśyantyaśrupūrṇākṣī śṛṇvantī tamuvāca ha.
6. tāta iti paripūrṇārtham tasya tat madhuram vacaḥ
adṛśyantī aśrupūrṇākṣī śṛṇvantī tam uvāca ha
6. Adṛśyantī, her eyes filled with tears, spoke to him (Parāśara) upon hearing his sweet and deeply meaningful words, "O father."
मा तात तात तातेति न ते तातो महामुनिः ।
रक्षसा भक्षितस्तात तव तातो वनान्तरे ॥७॥
7. mā tāta tāta tāteti na te tāto mahāmuniḥ ,
rakṣasā bhakṣitastāta tava tāto vanāntare.
7. mā tāta tāta tāta iti na te tātaḥ mahāmuniḥ
rakṣasā bhakṣitaḥ tāta tava tātaḥ vanāntare
7. Do not cry out 'Father, Father, Father!' That great sage (mahāmuni) is not your father. Oh dear one, your actual father was devoured by a demon (rakṣas) in the forest.
मन्यसे यं तु तातेति नैष तातस्तवानघ ।
आर्यस्त्वेष पिता तस्य पितुस्तव महात्मनः ॥८॥
8. manyase yaṁ tu tāteti naiṣa tātastavānagha ,
āryastveṣa pitā tasya pitustava mahātmanaḥ.
8. manyase yam tu tāta iti na eṣaḥ tātaḥ tava anagha
āryaḥ tu eṣaḥ pitā tasya pituḥ tava mahātmanaḥ
8. Oh sinless one (anagha), he whom you address as 'father' is not your actual father. This venerable man is the father of your great-souled (mahātman) father.
स एवमुक्तो दुःखार्तः सत्यवागृषिसत्तमः ।
सर्वलोकविनाशाय मतिं चक्रे महामनाः ॥९॥
9. sa evamukto duḥkhārtaḥ satyavāgṛṣisattamaḥ ,
sarvalokavināśāya matiṁ cakre mahāmanāḥ.
9. saḥ evam uktaḥ duḥkhārtaḥ satyavāk ṛṣisattamaḥ
sarvalokavināśāya matim cakre mahāmanāḥ
9. Addressed in this manner, that truth-speaking, great-minded (mahāmanāḥ) best of sages (ṛṣisattama), who was deeply distressed, resolved to destroy all the worlds.
तं तथा निश्चितात्मानं महात्मानं महातपाः ।
वसिष्ठो वारयामास हेतुना येन तच्छृणु ॥१०॥
10. taṁ tathā niścitātmānaṁ mahātmānaṁ mahātapāḥ ,
vasiṣṭho vārayāmāsa hetunā yena tacchṛṇu.
10. tam tathā niścitātmānam mahātmānam mahātapāḥ
vasiṣṭhaḥ vārayām āsa hetunā yena tat śṛṇu
10. Listen now to the reason by which Vasiṣṭha, a great ascetic (mahātapāḥ), restrained that great-souled (mahātman) one, whose resolve was thus fixed.
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
कृतवीर्य इति ख्यातो बभूव नृपतिः क्षितौ ।
याज्यो वेदविदां लोके भृगूणां पार्थिवर्षभः ॥११॥
11. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
kṛtavīrya iti khyāto babhūva nṛpatiḥ kṣitau ,
yājyo vedavidāṁ loke bhṛgūṇāṁ pārthivarṣabhaḥ.
11. vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca kṛtavīryaḥ iti khyātaḥ babhūva nṛpatiḥ
kṣitau yājyaḥ vedavidām loke bhṛgūṇām pārthivarṣabhaḥ
11. Vasiṣṭha said: 'There once lived on earth a king named Kṛtavīrya, who was renowned as the foremost among rulers and was worthy of performing sacrifices, especially by the knowers of the Vedas among the Bhṛgu clan.'
स तानग्रभुजस्तात धान्येन च धनेन च ।
सोमान्ते तर्पयामास विपुलेन विशां पतिः ॥१२॥
12. sa tānagrabhujastāta dhānyena ca dhanena ca ,
somānte tarpayāmāsa vipulena viśāṁ patiḥ.
12. sa tān agrabhujaḥ tāta dhānyena ca dhanena
ca somānte tarpayāmāsa vipulena viśām patiḥ
12. O dear one, that lord of the people satisfied those chief recipients with ample grain and wealth at the conclusion of the soma ritual (yajña).
तस्मिन्नृपतिशार्दूले स्वर्यातेऽथ कदाचन ।
बभूव तत्कुलेयानां द्रव्यकार्यमुपस्थितम् ॥१३॥
13. tasminnṛpatiśārdūle svaryāte'tha kadācana ,
babhūva tatkuleyānāṁ dravyakāryamupasthitam.
13. tasmin nṛpatiśārdūle svaryāte atha kadācana
babhūva tatkuleyānām dravyakāryam upasthitam
13. Once, after that excellent king had departed to heaven, a financial matter arose for those of his family.
ते भृगूणां धनं ज्ञात्वा राजानः सर्व एव ह ।
याचिष्णवोऽभिजग्मुस्तांस्तात भार्गवसत्तमान् ॥१४॥
14. te bhṛgūṇāṁ dhanaṁ jñātvā rājānaḥ sarva eva ha ,
yāciṣṇavo'bhijagmustāṁstāta bhārgavasattamān.
14. te bhṛgūṇām dhanam jñātvā rājānaḥ sarve eva ha
yāciṣṇavaḥ abhijagmuḥ tān tāta bhārgavasattamān
14. O dear one, all those kings, having learned of the Bhṛgus' wealth, approached those most excellent Bhārgavas as supplicants.
भूमौ तु निदधुः केचिद्भृगवो धनमक्षयम् ।
ददुः केचिद्द्विजातिभ्यो ज्ञात्वा क्षत्रियतो भयम् ॥१५॥
15. bhūmau tu nidadhuḥ kecidbhṛgavo dhanamakṣayam ,
daduḥ keciddvijātibhyo jñātvā kṣatriyato bhayam.
15. bhūmau tu nidadhuḥ kecit bhṛgavaḥ dhanam akṣayam
daduḥ kecit dvijātibhyaḥ jñātvā kṣatriyataḥ bhayam
15. But some Bhṛgus deposited their inexhaustible wealth underground, while others gave it to the twice-born (dvijāti) ones, perceiving danger from the Kṣatriyas.
भृगवस्तु ददुः केचित्तेषां वित्तं यथेप्सितम् ।
क्षत्रियाणां तदा तात कारणान्तरदर्शनात् ॥१६॥
16. bhṛgavastu daduḥ kecitteṣāṁ vittaṁ yathepsitam ,
kṣatriyāṇāṁ tadā tāta kāraṇāntaradarśanāt.
16. bhṛgavaḥ tu daduḥ kecit teṣām vittam yathā
īpsitam kṣatriyāṇām tadā tāta kāraṇāntaradarśanāt
16. But then, O dear one, some Bhṛgus gave those Kṣatriyas the desired wealth, due to perceiving another reason.
ततो महीतलं तात क्षत्रियेण यदृच्छया ।
खनताधिगतं वित्तं केनचिद्भृगुवेश्मनि ।
तद्वित्तं ददृशुः सर्वे समेताः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥१७॥
17. tato mahītalaṁ tāta kṣatriyeṇa yadṛcchayā ,
khanatādhigataṁ vittaṁ kenacidbhṛguveśmani ,
tadvittaṁ dadṛśuḥ sarve sametāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.
17. tataḥ mahītalam tāta kṣatriyeṇa
yadṛcchayā khanatā adhigatam vittam
kenacit bhṛguveśmani tat vittam
dadṛśuḥ sarve sametāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
17. O dear one, then, by chance, a kṣatriya, while digging, discovered some wealth in the dwelling of Bhṛgu. All the assembled chief kṣatriyas saw that treasure.
अवमन्य ततः कोपाद्भृगूंस्ताञ्शरणागतान् ।
निजघ्नुस्ते महेष्वासाः सर्वांस्तान्निशितैः शरैः ।
आ गर्भादनुकृन्तन्तश्चेरुश्चैव वसुंधराम् ॥१८॥
18. avamanya tataḥ kopādbhṛgūṁstāñśaraṇāgatān ,
nijaghnuste maheṣvāsāḥ sarvāṁstānniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
ā garbhādanukṛntantaśceruścaiva vasuṁdharām.
18. avamanya tataḥ kopāt bhṛgūn tān
śaraṇāgatān nijaghnuḥ te maheṣvāsāḥ
sarvān tān niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ā garbhāt
anukṛntantaḥ ceruḥ ca eva vasundharām
18. Then, those great archers, out of anger, insulted those Bhṛgus who had sought refuge and killed all of them with sharp arrows. They also roamed the earth, slaying them even from the womb.
तत उच्छिद्यमानेषु भृगुष्वेवं भयात्तदा ।
भृगुपत्न्यो गिरिं तात हिमवन्तं प्रपेदिरे ॥१९॥
19. tata ucchidyamāneṣu bhṛguṣvevaṁ bhayāttadā ,
bhṛgupatnyo giriṁ tāta himavantaṁ prapedire.
19. tataḥ ucchidyāmāṇeṣu bhṛguṣu evam bhayāt tadā
bhṛgupatnyaḥ girim tāta himavantam prapedire
19. O dear one, at that time, when the Bhṛgus were being thus exterminated, their wives, out of fear, resorted to the Himālaya mountain.
तासामन्यतमा गर्भं भयाद्दाधार तैजसम् ।
ऊरुणैकेन वामोरूर्भर्तुः कुलविवृद्धये ।
ददृशुर्ब्राह्मणीं तां ते दीप्यमानां स्वतेजसा ॥२०॥
20. tāsāmanyatamā garbhaṁ bhayāddādhāra taijasam ,
ūruṇaikena vāmorūrbhartuḥ kulavivṛddhaye ,
dadṛśurbrāhmaṇīṁ tāṁ te dīpyamānāṁ svatejasā.
20. tāsām anyatamā garbham bhayāt
dādhāra taijasam ūruṇā ekena vāmorūḥ
bhartuḥ kulavivṛddhaye dadṛśuḥ
brāhmaṇīm tām te dīpyamānām svatejasā
20. One of those women, the beautiful-thighed one, out of fear, bore a radiant embryo (garbha) in one of her thighs for the growth of her husband's family. Those [onlookers] saw that brāhmaṇa woman shining with her own brilliance.
अथ गर्भः स भित्त्वोरुं ब्राह्मण्या निर्जगाम ह ।
मुष्णन्दृष्टीः क्षत्रियाणां मध्याह्न इव भास्करः ।
ततश्चक्षुर्वियुक्तास्ते गिरिदुर्गेषु बभ्रमुः ॥२१॥
21. atha garbhaḥ sa bhittvoruṁ brāhmaṇyā nirjagāma ha ,
muṣṇandṛṣṭīḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ madhyāhna iva bhāskaraḥ ,
tataścakṣurviyuktāste giridurgeṣu babhramuḥ.
21. atha garbhaḥ saḥ bhittvā ūrum brāhmaṇyāḥ
nirjagāma ha muṣṇan dṛṣṭīḥ kṣatriyāṇām
madhyāhnaḥ iva bhāskaraḥ tataḥ
cakṣurviyuktāḥ te giridurgeṣu babhramuḥ
21. Then, that embryo (garbha) indeed emerged, splitting the brāhmaṇa woman's thigh. It stole the sight of the kṣatriyas, just like the sun (bhāskara) at midday. Then, those [kṣatriyas], deprived of their eyesight, wandered in difficult mountain terrains.
ततस्ते मोघसंकल्पा भयार्ताः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
ब्रह्मणीं शरणं जग्मुर्दृष्ट्यर्थं तामनिन्दिताम् ॥२२॥
22. tataste moghasaṁkalpā bhayārtāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
brahmaṇīṁ śaraṇaṁ jagmurdṛṣṭyarthaṁ tāmaninditām.
22. tataḥ te moghasaṅkalpāḥ bhayārtāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
brahmaṇīm śaraṇam jagmuḥ dṛṣṭyartham tām aninditām
22. Then, those foremost kṣatriyas, whose resolves had become futile and who were afflicted by fear, went to seek refuge with that blameless brahmin lady, hoping to regain their sight.
ऊचुश्चैनां महाभागां क्षत्रियास्ते विचेतसः ।
ज्योतिःप्रहीणा दुःखार्ताः शान्तार्चिष इवाग्नयः ॥२३॥
23. ūcuścaināṁ mahābhāgāṁ kṣatriyāste vicetasaḥ ,
jyotiḥprahīṇā duḥkhārtāḥ śāntārciṣa ivāgnayaḥ.
23. ūcuḥ ca enām mahābhāgām kṣatriyāḥ te vicetasaḥ
jyotiḥprahīṇāḥ duḥkhārtāḥ śāntārciṣaḥ iva agnayaḥ
23. And those kṣatriyas, bewildered in mind, deprived of sight, and afflicted by sorrow, addressed that highly blessed lady. They were like fires whose flames had been extinguished.
भगवत्याः प्रसादेन गच्छेत्क्षत्रं सचक्षुषम् ।
उपारम्य च गच्छेम सहिताः पापकर्मणः ॥२४॥
24. bhagavatyāḥ prasādena gacchetkṣatraṁ sacakṣuṣam ,
upāramya ca gacchema sahitāḥ pāpakarmaṇaḥ.
24. bhagavatyāḥ prasādena gacchet kṣatram sacakṣuṣam
upāramya ca gacchema sahitāḥ pāpakarmaṇaḥ
24. May the warrior class (kṣatram) regain their sight (sacākṣuṣam) through the grace (prasādena) of the venerable lady (bhagavatyāḥ). And, having ceased from sinful deeds (pāpakarmaṇaḥ), may we proceed (gacchema) united (sahitāḥ).
सपुत्रा त्वं प्रसादं नः सर्वेषां कर्तुमर्हसि ।
पुनर्दृष्टिप्रदानेन राज्ञः संत्रातुमर्हसि ॥२५॥
25. saputrā tvaṁ prasādaṁ naḥ sarveṣāṁ kartumarhasi ,
punardṛṣṭipradānena rājñaḥ saṁtrātumarhasi.
25. saputrā tvam prasādam naḥ sarveṣām kartum arhasi
punaḥ dṛṣṭipradānena rājñaḥ saṃtrātum arhasi
25. You, who have a son, are capable of granting favor to all of us. You should also protect the king by restoring his sight.
