Janamejaya said: "O Brahmin, this deed (karma) of Partha, who possesses immeasurable might, is exceedingly wondrous. What did Dhritarashtra, the greatly mighty one, say after hearing about it?"

Vaishampayana said: "Having heard from Dvaipayana, the chief of sages, that Partha had gone to Indra's world, King Dhritarashtra, Ambika's son, spoke these words to Sanjaya."
श्रुतं मे सूत कार्त्स्न्येन कर्म पार्थस्य धीमतः ।

3.
O Sanjaya (Sūta), I have heard the deeds (karma) of the intelligent Partha in their entirety. Is it also known to you, O charioteer (Sārathi), exactly as it happened?

4.
My son, negligent concerning sensuous acts, dull-witted, resolved on committing sin, and extremely evil-minded, will cause the earth to be destroyed.

5.
Even in jest, the words of that great-souled one (mahātman) are eternally true. The three worlds would belong to him, whose warrior is Dhananjaya (Arjuna).

Who could stand before Arjuna while he shoots his barbed iron arrows, sharp-pointed and sharpened on stone? Not even Death, who transcends old age.

7.
All my wicked sons (durātman) have come under the sway of death, for whom a battle with the formidable Pandavas is imminent.

Even though I constantly ponder, I do not see any chariot-warrior in battle who could confront that Arjuna, the wielder of the Gaṇḍīva bow.

If Droṇa and Karṇa were to confront him, or even Bhīṣma in battle, there would be great doubt in the world, but I do not see our victory.

10.
Karṇa is compassionate and negligent, and the preceptor (Droṇa) is old and revered. Pārtha (Arjuna) is intolerant (of insult) and powerful, impetuous and of firm prowess.

11.
The battle would be exceedingly fierce and unconquerable (for either side). Indeed, all are experts in weaponry, all are heroes, and all have attained great renown.

12.
Indeed, even the defeated would not desire universal sovereignty (sarveśvaratvam). Certainly, peace would come from the slaying of either them or Arjuna.

13.
But alas, there is no conqueror of Arjuna, nor is one found for him. How, then, would his anger (manyu), which has arisen towards the foolish, be pacified?

14.
The hero, equal to the lord of the gods, satisfied the fire (Agni) in the Khāṇḍava forest. He conquered all the kings in the Rājasūya, the great Vedic ritual (yajña).

na tu kuryuḥ śarāḥ śeṣam astāḥ tāta kirīṭinā
15.
O Saṃjaya, a thunderbolt falling upon a mountain's summit might leave a remainder. But, O dear one, arrows shot by Kirīṭin (Arjuna) would certainly not leave anything remaining.
यथा हि किरणा भानोस्तपन्तीह चराचरम् ।

16.
Indeed, just as the sun's rays scorch all creation, both moving and non-moving, similarly, the arrows released from Arjuna's arm will scorch my sons.

17.
Or perhaps, by the roar of Savyasācin's (Arjuna's) chariots, the Bhārata army, distressed by fear, appears as if shattered on all sides.

18.
Indeed, as the crowned Arjuna (Kirīṭī) stands in battle, showering and scattering arrows like an aggressor, he is as irresistible as Death (Antaka), the destroyer of all, created by the creator (Vidhātā).

Sañjaya said: "O King, what you have spoken concerning Duryodhana - all of this is exactly as you have stated. This is not false, O lord of the earth."

Indeed, those Pandavas of immeasurable prowess were overcome by rage (manyu) when they saw their glorious, lawful wife (dharma-patnī), Krishna, dragged into the assembly hall.

O great king, having heard those words of Duḥśāsana and Karṇa, which heralded cruel consequences, I believe they will not sleep.

Assuming the disguise of a hunter (kirāta), Bhagavān Kapardī (Śiva) himself, the lord of all gods, desiring to test Phalguna (Arjuna), fought with him.

There, those world-guardians (lokapāla) showed Arjuna, the foremost of the Kurus, who was valiant through his austerity (tapas) for the sake of obtaining divine weapons.

O King, what man would be capable of weakening that hero in battle, that hero whose very form was not consumed or diminished by Maheśvara (Śiva) himself, even when Śiva appeared in a terrifying form to attack him?

27.
This dreadful, tumultuous, and hair-raising (situation, i.e., the war) was caused by those who dragged Draupadi and enraged the Pandavas.

O wicked one, O gambler of the evil dice game, at the end of thirteen years, I will break both your thighs with a mace resembling a thunderbolt.

All of them are the best among warriors, and all possess immeasurable valor. All are experts in all weapons, and they are unconquerable even by the gods.

I believe that the sons of Pritha (Pārthāḥ), endowed with valor and indignation, will bring about the end of your sons, who are agitated by wrath, in battle.

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O charioteer (sūta), what was done by Karṇa, speaking such harsh words? Is this much animosity (vaira) considered sufficient, seeing that Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) herself was taken to the assembly?"

Will my dull-witted sons now behave properly, when their eldest brother and preceptor (guru) does not abide by appropriate conduct?

34.
O charioteer (sūta), that unfortunate (mandabhāk) person does not listen even to my words, even though he sees me blind, inactive, and unconscious.

And his dull-witted ministers, such as Karṇa, Śakuni (Saubalaka), and others - they, being senseless, also increase his many faults.

Even arrows casually released by Arjuna (Pārtha), who possesses immeasurable prowess, would incinerate my sons. How much more so those impelled by his rage?

37.
Arrows discharged by Arjuna's (Pārtha) powerful arms, released from his great bow, and activated by the incantations (mantra) for divine weapons (divyāstra), would subdue even the gods.

For one whose counselor, protector, and indeed a close friend is Janārdana – Hari, the lord of the three worlds – what is there that has not been conquered by him?

39.
And this, O Sañjaya, is indeed a very great and astonishing thing concerning Arjuna (Arjuna) here: the tradition (śruti) says that he fought with Mahādeva, arm to arm.

This was evident to all people: what was done in the past in the Khaṇḍava forest by Arjuna and Dāmodara (Krishna) to assist Agni, the fire god.

41.
Certainly, my son, along with his ministers and kinsmen, will not survive if Pārtha (Arjuna), Bhīma, Vāsudeva (Krishna), and Sātvata (Krishna) become angry.
