वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो वनगताः पार्थाः सायाह्ने सह कृष्णया ।
उपविष्टाः कथाश्चक्रुर्दुःखशोकपरायणाः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato vanagatāḥ pārthāḥ sāyāhne saha kṛṣṇayā ,
upaviṣṭāḥ kathāścakrurduḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, in the evening, the Pārthas, who had gone to the forest, sat down with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) and engaged in discussions, overwhelmed by distress and lamentation.
प्रिया च दर्शनीया च पण्डिता च पतिव्रता ।
ततः कृष्णा धर्मराजमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. priyā ca darśanīyā ca paṇḍitā ca pativratā ,
tataḥ kṛṣṇā dharmarājamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

2. Then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) – who was beloved, beautiful, learned, and devoted to her husband – spoke these words to Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira).
न नूनं तस्य पापस्य दुःखमस्मासु किंचन ।
विद्यते धार्तराष्ट्रस्य नृशंसस्य दुरात्मनः ॥३॥
3. na nūnaṁ tasya pāpasya duḥkhamasmāsu kiṁcana ,
vidyate dhārtarāṣṭrasya nṛśaṁsasya durātmanaḥ.
3. na nūnam tasya pāpasya duḥkham asmāsu kiñcana
vidyate dhārtarāṣṭrasya nṛśaṃsasya durātmanaḥ
3. Certainly, there is no grief (duḥkha) within us for that wicked, cruel, evil-minded son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
यस्त्वां राजन्मया सार्धमजिनैः प्रतिवासितम् ।
भ्रातृभिश्च तथा सर्वैर्नाभ्यभाषत किंचन ।
वनं प्रस्थाप्य दुष्टात्मा नान्वतप्यत दुर्मतिः ॥४॥
4. yastvāṁ rājanmayā sārdhamajinaiḥ prativāsitam ,
bhrātṛbhiśca tathā sarvairnābhyabhāṣata kiṁcana ,
vanaṁ prasthāpya duṣṭātmā nānvatapyata durmatiḥ.
4. yaḥ tvām rājan mayā sārdham ajinaiḥ
prativāsitam bhrātṛbhiḥ ca tathā sarvaiḥ
na abhyabhāṣata kiñcana vanam
prasthāpya duṣṭātmā na anvatapyata durmatiḥ
4. O King, that evil-souled (durātman), ill-minded one, who did not speak a single word to you when you, along with me and all your brothers, were clad in deerskins, and who, after exiling you to the forest, felt no remorse whatsoever.
आयसं हृदयं नूनं तस्य दुष्कृतकर्मणः ।
यस्त्वां धर्मपरं श्रेष्ठं रूक्षाण्यश्रावयत्तदा ॥५॥
5. āyasaṁ hṛdayaṁ nūnaṁ tasya duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ ,
yastvāṁ dharmaparaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ rūkṣāṇyaśrāvayattadā.
5. āyasam hṛdayam nūnam tasya duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ yaḥ
tvām dharmaparam śreṣṭham rūkṣāṇi aśrāvayat tadā
5. Certainly, the heart of that evil-doer was made of iron, for he then made you, who are supreme and devoted to natural law (dharma), hear such harsh words.
सुखोचितमदुःखार्हं दुरात्मा ससुहृद्गणः ।
ईदृशं दुःखमानीय मोदते पापपूरुषः ॥६॥
6. sukhocitamaduḥkhārhaṁ durātmā sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ ,
īdṛśaṁ duḥkhamānīya modate pāpapūruṣaḥ.
6. sukocitam aduḥkārham durātmā sa-suhṛdgaṇaḥ
īdṛśam duḥkham ānīya modate pāpapūruṣaḥ
6. That evil-souled (durātman) wicked man, along with his host of friends, rejoices after inflicting such suffering (duḥkha) upon one like you, who are accustomed to comfort and undeserving of distress.
चतुर्णामेव पापानामश्रु वै नापतत्तदा ।
त्वयि भारत निष्क्रान्ते वनायाजिनवाससि ॥७॥
7. caturṇāmeva pāpānāmaśru vai nāpatattadā ,
tvayi bhārata niṣkrānte vanāyājinavāsasi.
7. caturṇām eva pāpānām aśru vai na apatat tadā
| tvayi bhārata niṣkrānte vanāya ajinavāsasi
7. O Bhārata, when you departed for the forest, dressed in deer skin, not a single tear fell at that time from the eyes of those four sinners.
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्च दुरात्मनः ।
दुर्भ्रातुस्तस्य चोग्रस्य तथा दुःशासनस्य च ॥८॥
8. duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneśca durātmanaḥ ,
durbhrātustasya cograsya tathā duḥśāsanasya ca.
8. duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ ca durātmanaḥ |
durbhrātuḥ tasya ca ugrasya tathā duḥśāsanasya ca
8. Specifically, from Duryodhana, from Karṇa, from the wicked (durātman) Śakuni, and from that cruel (ugra) wicked brother (durbhrātṛ) of his, Duḥśāsana.
इतरेषां तु सर्वेषां कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम ।
दुःखेनाभिपरीतानां नेत्रेभ्यः प्रापतज्जलम् ॥९॥
9. itareṣāṁ tu sarveṣāṁ kurūṇāṁ kurusattama ,
duḥkhenābhiparītānāṁ netrebhyaḥ prāpatajjalam.
9. itareṣām tu sarveṣām kurūṇām kurusattama |
duḥkhena abhiparītānām netrebhyaḥ prāpatat jalam
9. But from the eyes of all the other Kurus, O best of Kurus (kurusattama), who were overwhelmed by sorrow, tears fell.
इदं च शयनं दृष्ट्वा यच्चासीत्ते पुरातनम् ।
शोचामि त्वां महाराज दुःखानर्हं सुखोचितम् ॥१०॥
10. idaṁ ca śayanaṁ dṛṣṭvā yaccāsītte purātanam ,
śocāmi tvāṁ mahārāja duḥkhānarhaṁ sukhocitam.
10. idam ca śayanam dṛṣṭvā yat ca āsīt te purātanam
| śocāmi tvām mahārāja duḥkhānarham sukhocitam
10. And seeing this bed, as well as that old one of yours, O great king (mahārāja), I grieve for you, who are undeserving of sorrow and accustomed to comfort.
दान्तं यच्च सभामध्ये आसनं रत्नभूषितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा कुशबृसीं चेमां शोको मां रुन्धयत्ययम् ॥११॥
11. dāntaṁ yacca sabhāmadhye āsanaṁ ratnabhūṣitam ,
dṛṣṭvā kuśabṛsīṁ cemāṁ śoko māṁ rundhayatyayam.
11. dāntam yat ca sabhāmadhye āsanam ratnabhūṣitam
dṛṣṭvā kuśabṛsīm ca imām śokaḥ mām rundhayati ayam
11. This sorrow overwhelms me when I see this mat of kusha grass, recalling that dignified, jewel-studded seat in the middle of the assembly.
यदपश्यं सभायां त्वां राजभिः परिवारितम् ।
तच्च राजन्नपश्यन्त्याः का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥१२॥
12. yadapaśyaṁ sabhāyāṁ tvāṁ rājabhiḥ parivāritam ,
tacca rājannapaśyantyāḥ kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
12. yat apaśyam sabhāyām tvām rājabhiḥ parivāritam
tat ca rājan apaśyantyāḥ kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me
12. O King, what peace can there be for my heart when I no longer see you, whom I once saw surrounded by kings in the assembly?
या त्वाहं चन्दनादिग्धमपश्यं सूर्यवर्चसम् ।
सा त्वा पङ्कमलादिग्धं दृष्ट्वा मुह्यामि भारत ॥१३॥
13. yā tvāhaṁ candanādigdhamapaśyaṁ sūryavarcasam ,
sā tvā paṅkamalādigdhaṁ dṛṣṭvā muhyāmi bhārata.
13. yā tvām aham candanādigdham apaśyam sūryavarcasam
sā tvām paṅkamalādigdham dṛṣṭvā muhyāmi bhārata
13. O Bhārata, I, who once saw you radiant as the sun and smeared with sandalwood paste, am now bewildered (muhyāmi) to see you covered in mud and dirt.
या वै त्वा कौशिकैर्वस्त्रैः शुभ्रैर्बहुधनैः पुरा ।
दृष्टवत्यस्मि राजेन्द्र सा त्वां पश्यामि चीरिणम् ॥१४॥
14. yā vai tvā kauśikairvastraiḥ śubhrairbahudhanaiḥ purā ,
dṛṣṭavatyasmi rājendra sā tvāṁ paśyāmi cīriṇam.
14. yā vai tvām kauśikaiḥ vastraiḥ śubhraiḥ bahudhanaiḥ
purā dṛṣṭavatī asmi rājendra sā tvām paśyāmi cīriṇam
14. O great king (rājendra), I, who once saw you indeed wearing bright, very costly silken garments, now behold you dressed in bark.
यच्च तद्रुक्मपात्रीभिर्ब्राह्मणेभ्यः सहस्रशः ।
ह्रियते ते गृहादन्नं संस्कृतं सार्वकामिकम् ॥१५॥
15. yacca tadrukmapātrībhirbrāhmaṇebhyaḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
hriyate te gṛhādannaṁ saṁskṛtaṁ sārvakāmikam.
15. yat ca tat rukmapātrībhiḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ sahasraśaḥ
hriyate te gṛhāt annam saṃskṛtam sārvakāmikam
15. And that well-prepared (saṃskṛta) food, desired by all, which is taken from your house by thousands of Brahmins using golden vessels.
यतीनामगृहाणां ते तथैव गृहमेधिनाम् ।
दीयते भोजनं राजन्नतीव गुणवत्प्रभो ।
तच्च राजन्नपश्यन्त्याः का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥१६॥
16. yatīnāmagṛhāṇāṁ te tathaiva gṛhamedhinām ,
dīyate bhojanaṁ rājannatīva guṇavatprabho ,
tacca rājannapaśyantyāḥ kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
16. yatīnām agṛhāṇām te tathā eva
gṛhamedhinām dīyate bhojanam rājan
atīva guṇavat prabho tat ca rājan
apaśyantyāḥ kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me
16. O King, O Lord, your exceedingly excellent food is given to homeless ascetics and likewise to householders. And O King, for me, not seeing that (distribution), what peace can there be for my heart?
यांस्ते भ्रातॄन्महाराज युवानो मृष्टकुण्डलाः ।
अभोजयन्त मृष्टान्नैः सूदाः परमसंस्कृतैः ॥१७॥
17. yāṁste bhrātṝnmahārāja yuvāno mṛṣṭakuṇḍalāḥ ,
abhojayanta mṛṣṭānnaiḥ sūdāḥ paramasaṁskṛtaiḥ.
17. yān te bhrātṝn mahārāja yuvānaḥ mṛṣṭakuṇḍalāḥ
abhojayanta mṛṣṭānnaiḥ sūdāḥ paramasaṃskṛtaiḥ
17. O Great King, your young brothers, wearing polished earrings, whom cooks used to feed with supremely well-prepared (saṃskṛta), delicious food.
सर्वांस्तानद्य पश्यामि वने वन्येन जीवतः ।
अदुःखार्हान्मनुष्येन्द्र नोपशाम्यति मे मनः ॥१८॥
18. sarvāṁstānadya paśyāmi vane vanyena jīvataḥ ,
aduḥkhārhānmanuṣyendra nopaśāmyati me manaḥ.
18. sarvān tān adya paśyāmi vane vanyena jīvataḥ
aduḥkhārhān manuṣyendra na upaśāmyati me manaḥ
18. O lord of men, today I see all those (brothers), who are undeserving of suffering, living in the forest on wild produce. My mind does not find peace.
भीमसेनमिमं चापि दुःखितं वनवासिनम् ।
ध्यायन्तं किं न मन्युस्ते प्राप्ते काले विवर्धते ॥१९॥
19. bhīmasenamimaṁ cāpi duḥkhitaṁ vanavāsinam ,
dhyāyantaṁ kiṁ na manyuste prāpte kāle vivardhate.
19. bhīmasenam imam ca api duḥkhitam vanavāsinam
dhyāyantam kim na manyuḥ te prāpte kāle vivardhate
19. Seeing this very Bhīmasena, who is distressed and dwelling in the forest, constantly reflecting on his plight, why does your resentment not intensify, especially now that the opportune moment has arrived?
भीमसेनं हि कर्माणि स्वयं कुर्वाणमच्युत ।
सुखार्हं दुःखितं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥२०॥
20. bhīmasenaṁ hi karmāṇi svayaṁ kurvāṇamacyuta ,
sukhārhaṁ duḥkhitaṁ dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
20. bhīmasenam hi karmāṇi svayam kurvāṇam acyuta
sukhārham duḥkhitam dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
20. O Acyuta, when you see Bhīmasena, who performs such deeds himself, and who deserves happiness yet is now distressed, why does your resentment not intensify?
सत्कृतं विविधैर्यानैर्वस्त्रैरुच्चावचैस्तथा ।
तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥२१॥
21. satkṛtaṁ vividhairyānairvastrairuccāvacaistathā ,
taṁ te vanagataṁ dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
21. satkṛtam vividhaiḥ yānaiḥ vastraiḥ uccāvacaiḥ tathā
tam te vanagatam dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
21. Having seen him (Bhīmasena), who was once honored with various conveyances and all sorts of fine garments, now dwelling in the forest, why does your resentment not intensify?
कुरूनपि हि यः सर्वान्हन्तुमुत्सहते प्रभुः ।
त्वत्प्रसादं प्रतीक्षंस्तु सहतेऽयं वृकोदरः ॥२२॥
22. kurūnapi hi yaḥ sarvānhantumutsahate prabhuḥ ,
tvatprasādaṁ pratīkṣaṁstu sahate'yaṁ vṛkodaraḥ.
22. kurūn api hi yaḥ sarvān hantum utsahate prabhuḥ
tvatprasādam pratīkṣan tu sahate ayam vṛkodaraḥ
22. Indeed, this Vṛkodara (Bhīmasena), who is mighty enough to kill all the Kurus, patiently endures everything while awaiting your divine grace (prasāda).
योऽर्जुनेनार्जुनस्तुल्यो द्विबाहुर्बहुबाहुना ।
शरातिसर्गे शीघ्रत्वात्कालान्तकयमोपमः ॥२३॥
23. yo'rjunenārjunastulyo dvibāhurbahubāhunā ,
śarātisarge śīghratvātkālāntakayamopamaḥ.
23. yaḥ arjunena arjunaḥ tulyaḥ dvibāhuḥ bahubāhunā
śarātisarge śīghratvāt kālāntakayamopamaḥ
23. He, who is equal to Arjuna (Kārtavīrya) in his prowess, despite possessing only two arms compared to Kārtavīrya's thousand arms; and who, in the swift discharge of arrows, is comparable to Yama, the terminator of time (Death itself).
यस्य शस्त्रप्रतापेन प्रणताः सर्वपार्थिवाः ।
यज्ञे तव महाराज ब्राह्मणानुपतस्थिरे ॥२४॥
24. yasya śastrapratāpena praṇatāḥ sarvapārthivāḥ ,
yajñe tava mahārāja brāhmaṇānupatasthire.
24. yasya śastrapratāpena praṇatāḥ sarvapārthivāḥ
yajñe tava mahārāja brāhmaṇān upatasthire
24. O great king, all rulers submitted due to the might of his weapons, and served the brahmins at your sacrificial ritual (yajña).
तमिमं पुरुषव्याघ्रं पूजितं देवदानवैः ।
ध्यायन्तमर्जुनं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥२५॥
25. tamimaṁ puruṣavyāghraṁ pūjitaṁ devadānavaiḥ ,
dhyāyantamarjunaṁ dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
25. tam imam puruṣavyāghram pūjitam devadānavaiḥ
dhyāyantam arjunam dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
25. Why does your anger not increase, having seen this tiger among men, Arjuna, honored by gods and demons, now engaged in deep meditation (dhyāna)?
दृष्ट्वा वनगतं पार्थमदुःखार्हं सुखोचितम् ।
न च ते वर्धते मन्युस्तेन मुह्यामि भारत ॥२६॥
26. dṛṣṭvā vanagataṁ pārthamaduḥkhārhaṁ sukhocitam ,
na ca te vardhate manyustena muhyāmi bhārata.
26. dṛṣṭvā vanagatam pārtham aduḥkhārham sukhocitam
na ca te vardhate manyuḥ tena muhyāmi bhārata
26. O Bhārata, I am bewildered because, even after seeing Pārtha (Arjuna) in the forest, one who is accustomed to comfort and does not deserve suffering, your anger does not grow.
यो देवांश्च मनुष्यांश्च सर्पांश्चैकरथोऽजयत् ।
तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥२७॥
27. yo devāṁśca manuṣyāṁśca sarpāṁścaikaratho'jayat ,
taṁ te vanagataṁ dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
27. yaḥ devān ca manuṣyān ca sarpān ca eka-rathaḥ ajayat
tam te vanagatam dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
27. Why does your anger not increase when you see him, who with a single chariot conquered gods, humans, and serpents, now living in the forest?
यो यानैरद्भुताकारैर्हयैर्नागैश्च संवृतः ।
प्रसह्य वित्तान्यादत्त पार्थिवेभ्यः परंतपः ॥२८॥
28. yo yānairadbhutākārairhayairnāgaiśca saṁvṛtaḥ ,
prasahya vittānyādatta pārthivebhyaḥ paraṁtapaḥ.
28. yaḥ yānaiḥ adbhutākāraiḥ hayaiḥ nāgaiḥ ca saṃvṛtaḥ
prasahya vittāni ādatt pārthivebhyaḥ paraṃ-tapaḥ
28. The tormentor of enemies, who, surrounded by splendid vehicles, horses, and elephants, forcibly seized wealth from kings.
क्षिपत्येकेन वेगेन पञ्च बाणशतानि यः ।
तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥२९॥
29. kṣipatyekena vegena pañca bāṇaśatāni yaḥ ,
taṁ te vanagataṁ dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
29. kṣipati ekena vegena pañca bāṇa-śatāni yaḥ tam
te vanagatam dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
29. Why does your anger not increase when you see him, who with a single impetus can shoot five hundred arrows, now living in the forest?
श्यामं बृहन्तं तरुणं चर्मिणामुत्तमं रणे ।
नकुलं ते वने दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३०॥
30. śyāmaṁ bṛhantaṁ taruṇaṁ carmiṇāmuttamaṁ raṇe ,
nakulaṁ te vane dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
30. śyāmam bṛhantam taruṇam carmiṇām uttamam raṇe
nakulam te vane dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
30. Why does your anger not increase when you see Nakula - dark, mighty, young, and foremost among warriors in battle - now dwelling in the forest?
दर्शनीयं च शूरं च माद्रीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिर ।
सहदेवं वने दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३१॥
31. darśanīyaṁ ca śūraṁ ca mādrīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
sahadevaṁ vane dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
31. darśanīyam ca śūram ca mādrīputram yudhiṣṭhira
sahadevam vane dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
31. O Yudhiṣṭhira, why does your wrath not grow upon seeing Mādrī's son, Sahadeva - so handsome and brave - in the forest?
द्रुपदस्य कुले जातां स्नुषां पाण्डोर्महात्मनः ।
मां ते वनगतां दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते ॥३२॥
32. drupadasya kule jātāṁ snuṣāṁ pāṇḍormahātmanaḥ ,
māṁ te vanagatāṁ dṛṣṭvā kasmānmanyurna vardhate.
32. drupadasya kule jātām snuṣām pāṇḍoḥ mahātmanaḥ
mām te vanagatām dṛṣṭvā kasmāt manyuḥ na vardhate
32. Why does your wrath (manyuḥ) not grow when you see me, born in Drupada's lineage and the daughter-in-law of the great-souled Pāṇḍu, now living in the forest?
नूनं च तव नैवास्ति मन्युर्भरतसत्तम ।
यत्ते भ्रातॄंश्च मां चैव दृष्ट्वा न व्यथते मनः ॥३३॥
33. nūnaṁ ca tava naivāsti manyurbharatasattama ,
yatte bhrātṝṁśca māṁ caiva dṛṣṭvā na vyathate manaḥ.
33. nūnam ca tava na eva asti manyuḥ bharatasattama yat
te bhrātṝn ca mām ca eva dṛṣṭvā na vyathate manaḥ
33. O best of Bharatas, surely you have no wrath (manyuḥ) at all, because your mind (manas) feels no pain even after seeing your brothers and me.
न निर्मन्युः क्षत्रियोऽस्ति लोके निर्वचनं स्मृतम् ।
तदद्य त्वयि पश्यामि क्षत्रिये विपरीतवत् ॥३४॥
34. na nirmanyuḥ kṣatriyo'sti loke nirvacanaṁ smṛtam ,
tadadya tvayi paśyāmi kṣatriye viparītavat.
34. na nirmanuyḥ kṣatriyaḥ asti loke nirvacanam smṛtam
tat adya tvayi paśyāmi kṣatriye viparītavat
34. It is a well-known saying in the world that a warrior (kṣatriya) is not without wrath (manyuḥ). But today, O kṣatriya, I see the opposite in you.
यो न दर्शयते तेजः क्षत्रियः काल आगते ।
सर्वभूतानि तं पार्थ सदा परिभवन्त्युत ॥३५॥
35. yo na darśayate tejaḥ kṣatriyaḥ kāla āgate ,
sarvabhūtāni taṁ pārtha sadā paribhavantyuta.
35. yaḥ na darśayate tejaḥ kṣatriyaḥ kāle āgate
sarvabhūtāni tam pārtha sadā paribhavanti uta
35. O Pārtha, the kṣatriya who does not display his vigor when the appropriate time arrives is always disrespected by all beings.
तत्त्वया न क्षमा कार्या शत्रून्प्रति कथंचन ।
तेजसैव हि ते शक्या निहन्तुं नात्र संशयः ॥३६॥
36. tattvayā na kṣamā kāryā śatrūnprati kathaṁcana ,
tejasaiva hi te śakyā nihantuṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ.
36. tat tvayā na kṣamā kāryā śatrūn prati kathaṃcana
tejasā eva hi te śakyā nihantum na atra saṃśayaḥ
36. Therefore, you must not show forgiveness (kṣamā) towards enemies in any way. Indeed, they can only be vanquished through valor; there is no doubt about this.
तथैव यः क्षमाकाले क्षत्रियो नोपशाम्यति ।
अप्रियः सर्वभूतानां सोऽमुत्रेह च नश्यति ॥३७॥
37. tathaiva yaḥ kṣamākāle kṣatriyo nopaśāmyati ,
apriyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ so'mutreha ca naśyati.
37. tathā eva yaḥ kṣamākāle kṣatriyaḥ na upaśāmyati
apriyaḥ sarvabhūtānām saḥ amutra iha ca naśyati
37. Similarly, the kṣatriya who does not become calm even when it is time for forgiveness (kṣamā) becomes disliked by all beings and perishes both in this world and the next.
