वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्तु शिल्पिनः सर्वे अमात्यप्रवराश्च ह ।
विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञो धार्तराष्ट्रे न्यवेदयत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tatastu śilpinaḥ sarve amātyapravarāśca ha ,
viduraśca mahāprājño dhārtarāṣṭre nyavedayat.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, all the craftsmen and the foremost ministers, along with the very wise Vidura, reported to Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
सज्जं क्रतुवरं राजन्कालप्राप्तं च भारत ।
सौवर्णं च कृतं दिव्यं लाङ्गलं सुमहाधनम् ॥२॥
2. sajjaṁ kratuvaraṁ rājankālaprāptaṁ ca bhārata ,
sauvarṇaṁ ca kṛtaṁ divyaṁ lāṅgalaṁ sumahādhanam.
2. sajjam kratuvaram rājan kālaprāptam ca bhārata |
sauvarṇam ca kṛtam divyam lāṅgalam sumahādhanam
2. O King (rājan), O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), the excellent Vedic ritual (yajña) was ready and timely. Also, a divine golden plow (lāṅgalam) of immense value had been prepared.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा नृपश्रेष्ठो धार्तराष्ट्रो विशां पते ।
आज्ञापयामास नृपः क्रतुराजप्रवर्तनम् ॥३॥
3. etacchrutvā nṛpaśreṣṭho dhārtarāṣṭro viśāṁ pate ,
ājñāpayāmāsa nṛpaḥ kraturājapravartanam.
3. etat śrutvā nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ viśām
pate | ājñāpayāmāsa nṛpaḥ kraturājapravartanam
3. Having heard this, the lord of men (viśāṃ pate), Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who was the best of kings (nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ), ordered the commencement of the chief of sacrifices (kraturājapravartanam).
ततः प्रववृते यज्ञः प्रभूतान्नः सुसंस्कृतः ।
दीक्षितश्चापि गान्धारिर्यथाशास्त्रं यथाक्रमम् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ pravavṛte yajñaḥ prabhūtānnaḥ susaṁskṛtaḥ ,
dīkṣitaścāpi gāndhāriryathāśāstraṁ yathākramam.
4. tataḥ pravavṛte yajñaḥ prabhūtānnaḥ susaṃskṛtaḥ |
dīkṣitaḥ ca api gāndhāriḥ yathāśāstram yathākramam
4. Then the well-prepared Vedic ritual (yajña), abundant with food, commenced. And the Gāndhārī prince (gāndhāriḥ) was also initiated (dīkṣitaḥ) according to the scriptures (yathāśāstram) and in proper order (yathākramam).
प्रहृष्टो धृतराष्ट्रोऽभूद्विदुरश्च महायशाः ।
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपः कर्णो गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥५॥
5. prahṛṣṭo dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhūdviduraśca mahāyaśāḥ ,
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇo gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī.

| bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇaḥ gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī
5. Dhṛtarāṣṭra became greatly delighted, as did the highly renowned (mahāyaśas) Vidura. Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and the illustrious (yaśasvinī) Gāndhārī were also pleased.
निमन्त्रणार्थं दूतांश्च प्रेषयामास शीघ्रगान् ।
पार्थिवानां च राजेन्द्र ब्राह्मणानां तथैव च ।
ते प्रयाता यथोद्दिष्टं दूतास्त्वरितवाहनाः ॥६॥
6. nimantraṇārthaṁ dūtāṁśca preṣayāmāsa śīghragān ,
pārthivānāṁ ca rājendra brāhmaṇānāṁ tathaiva ca ,
te prayātā yathoddiṣṭaṁ dūtāstvaritavāhanāḥ.
6. nimantraṇārtham dūtān ca preṣayāmāsa
śīghragān | pārthivānām ca rājendra
brāhmaṇānām tathā eva ca | te prayātā
yathā uddiṣṭam dūtāḥ tvaritavāhanāḥ
6. For the purpose of invitation, he dispatched swift messengers, O king of kings, to the rulers and likewise to the Brahmins. Those messengers, with swift conveyances, departed as instructed.
तत्र कंचित्प्रयातं तु दूतं दुःशासनोऽब्रवीत् ।
गच्छ द्वैतवनं शीघ्रं पाण्डवान्पापपूरुषान् ।
निमन्त्रय यथान्यायं विप्रांस्तस्मिन्महावने ॥७॥
7. tatra kaṁcitprayātaṁ tu dūtaṁ duḥśāsano'bravīt ,
gaccha dvaitavanaṁ śīghraṁ pāṇḍavānpāpapūruṣān ,
nimantraya yathānyāyaṁ viprāṁstasminmahāvane.
7. tatra kañcit prayātam tu dūtam duḥśāsanaḥ
abravīt | gaccha dvaitavanam
śīghram pāṇḍavān pāpapūruṣān | nimantraya
yathā nyāyam viprān tasmin mahāvane
7. There, Duḥśāsana said to a departing messenger: 'Go swiftly to the Dwaita forest, to the Pāṇḍavas, those sinful men. Rightfully invite the Brahmins in that great forest.'
स गत्वा पाण्डवावासमुवाचाभिप्रणम्य तान् ।
दुर्योधनो महाराज यजते नृपसत्तमः ॥८॥
8. sa gatvā pāṇḍavāvāsamuvācābhipraṇamya tān ,
duryodhano mahārāja yajate nṛpasattamaḥ.

tān duryodhanaḥ mahārāja yajate nṛpasattamaḥ
8. sa pāṇḍavāvāsam gatvā tān abhipraṇamya uvāca

8. Having gone to the dwelling of the Pāṇḍavas and reverently bowing to them, he said: 'O great king, Duryodhana, the best among rulers, performs a Vedic ritual (yajña).'
स्ववीर्यार्जितमर्थौघमवाप्य कुरुनन्दनः ।
तत्र गच्छन्ति राजानो ब्राह्मणाश्च ततस्ततः ॥९॥
9. svavīryārjitamarthaughamavāpya kurunandanaḥ ,
tatra gacchanti rājāno brāhmaṇāśca tatastataḥ.
9. svavīryārjitamarthaugham avāpya kurunandanaḥ |
tatra gacchanti rājānaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ ca tataḥ tataḥ
9. Having acquired a vast amount of wealth earned by his own prowess, Duryodhana (the delight of the Kurus) is there. To that place, kings and Brahmins are going from various directions.
अहं तु प्रेषितो राजन्कौरवेण महात्मना ।
आमन्त्रयति वो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ।
मनोऽभिलषितं राज्ञस्तं क्रतुं द्रष्टुमर्हथ ॥१०॥
10. ahaṁ tu preṣito rājankauraveṇa mahātmanā ,
āmantrayati vo rājā dhārtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ ,
mano'bhilaṣitaṁ rājñastaṁ kratuṁ draṣṭumarhatha.
10. aham tu preṣitaḥ rājan kauraveṇa
mahātmanā āmantrayati vaḥ rājā
dhārtarāṣṭraḥ janeśvaraḥ manas abhilaṣitam
rājñaḥ tam kratum draṣṭum arhatha
10. O King, I have been sent by the great-souled Kaurava. King Dhārtarāṣṭra's son, the lord of men, invites you. You should come to see that sacrifice (kratu) which the king desires.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा तच्छ्रुत्वा दूतभाषितम् ।
अब्रवीन्नृपशार्दूलो दिष्ट्या राजा सुयोधनः ।
यजते क्रतुमुख्येन पूर्वेषां कीर्तिवर्धनः ॥११॥
11. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā tacchrutvā dūtabhāṣitam ,
abravīnnṛpaśārdūlo diṣṭyā rājā suyodhanaḥ ,
yajate kratumukhyena pūrveṣāṁ kīrtivardhanaḥ.
11. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā tat śrutvā
dūtabhāṣitam abravīt nṛpaśārdūlaḥ
diṣṭyā rājā suyodhanaḥ yajate
kratumukhyena pūrveṣām kīrtivardhanaḥ
11. Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, that tiger among kings, having heard the messenger's words, said, 'Fortunately, King Suyodhana is performing the principal sacrifice (kratu), he who enhances the fame of his ancestors.'
वयमप्युपयास्यामो न त्विदानीं कथंचन ।
समयः परिपाल्यो नो यावद्वर्षं त्रयोदशम् ॥१२॥
12. vayamapyupayāsyāmo na tvidānīṁ kathaṁcana ,
samayaḥ paripālyo no yāvadvarṣaṁ trayodaśam.
12. vayam api upayāsyāmaḥ na tu idānīm kathaṃcana
samayaḥ paripālyaḥ naḥ yāvadvarsam trayodaśam
12. We will certainly come, but not now, under any circumstances. Our agreement (samaya) must be honored until thirteen years have passed.
श्रुत्वैतद्धर्मराजस्य भीमो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
तदा तु नृपतिर्गन्ता धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१३॥
13. śrutvaitaddharmarājasya bhīmo vacanamabravīt ,
tadā tu nṛpatirgantā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
13. śrutvā etat dharmarājasya bhīmaḥ vacanam abravīt
tadā tu nṛpatiḥ gantā dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
13. Having heard this from the king of natural law (dharma), Bhīma spoke these words: 'Then, however, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), will go.'
अस्त्रशस्त्रप्रदीप्तेऽग्नौ यदा तं पातयिष्यति ।
वर्षात्त्रयोदशादूर्ध्वं रणसत्रे नराधिपः ॥१४॥
14. astraśastrapradīpte'gnau yadā taṁ pātayiṣyati ,
varṣāttrayodaśādūrdhvaṁ raṇasatre narādhipaḥ.
14. astraśastrapradīpte agnau yadā tam pātayiṣyati
varṣāt trayodaśāt ūrdhvam raṇasatre narādhipaḥ
14. yadā narādhipaḥ trayodaśāt varṣāt ūrdhvam
astraśastrapradīpte agnau raṇasatre tam pātayiṣyati
14. When the lord of men (narādhipa) will cast him into the fire (agni) blazing with missiles and weapons, after the thirteenth year, during the battle-ritual (raṇasatra).
यदा क्रोधहविर्मोक्ता धार्तराष्ट्रेषु पाण्डवः ।
आगन्तारस्तदा स्मेति वाच्यस्ते स सुयोधनः ॥१५॥
15. yadā krodhahavirmoktā dhārtarāṣṭreṣu pāṇḍavaḥ ,
āgantārastadā smeti vācyaste sa suyodhanaḥ.
15. yadā krodhahavirmoktṛ dhārtarāṣṭreṣu pāṇḍavaḥ
āgantāraḥ tadā sma iti vācyaḥ te sa suyodhanaḥ
15. When the Pāṇḍava, offering wrath as an oblation (havis), will unleash it upon the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, then Suyodhana should be told: 'They will surely come!'
शेषास्तु पाण्डवा राजन्नैवोचुः किंचिदप्रियम् ।
दूतश्चापि यथावृत्तं धार्तराष्ट्रे न्यवेदयत् ॥१६॥
16. śeṣāstu pāṇḍavā rājannaivocuḥ kiṁcidapriyam ,
dūtaścāpi yathāvṛttaṁ dhārtarāṣṭre nyavedayat.
16. śeṣāḥ tu pāṇḍavā rājan na eva ūcuḥ kiñcit apriyam
dūtaḥ ca api yathāvṛttaṃ dhārtarāṣṭre nyavedayat
16. O King, the remaining Pāṇḍavas did not utter anything unpleasant. And the messenger, for his part, reported the events exactly as they had transpired to Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana).
अथाजग्मुर्नरश्रेष्ठा नानाजनपदेश्वराः ।
ब्राह्मणाश्च महाभागा धार्तराष्ट्रपुरं प्रति ॥१७॥
17. athājagmurnaraśreṣṭhā nānājanapadeśvarāḥ ,
brāhmaṇāśca mahābhāgā dhārtarāṣṭrapuraṁ prati.
17. atha ājagmuḥ naraśreṣṭhāḥ nānājanapadeśvarāḥ
brāhmaṇāḥ ca mahābhāgāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrapuraṃ prati
17. Then, the leading men, rulers of various regions, and also the illustrious Brahmins arrived at the city of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Hastinapura).
ते त्वर्चिता यथाशास्त्रं यथावर्णं यथाक्रमम् ।
मुदा परमया युक्ताः प्रीत्या चापि नरेश्वर ॥१८॥
18. te tvarcitā yathāśāstraṁ yathāvarṇaṁ yathākramam ,
mudā paramayā yuktāḥ prītyā cāpi nareśvara.
18. te tu arcitāḥ yathāśāstram yathāvarṇam yathākramam
mudā paramayā yuktāḥ prītyā ca api nareśvara
18. And they, O king of men, were worshipped according to the scriptures, their class (varṇa), and their proper order, endowed with great joy and affection.
धृतराष्ट्रोऽपि राजेन्द्र संवृतः सर्वकौरवैः ।
हर्षेण महता युक्तो विदुरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१९॥
19. dhṛtarāṣṭro'pi rājendra saṁvṛtaḥ sarvakauravaiḥ ,
harṣeṇa mahatā yukto viduraṁ pratyabhāṣata.
19. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ api rājendra saṃvṛtaḥ sarvakauravaiḥ
harṣeṇa mahatā yuktaḥ viduram pratyabhāṣata
19. O king of kings, Dhṛtarāṣṭra also, surrounded by all the Kauravas and filled with great joy, spoke in reply to Vidura.
यथा सुखी जनः सर्वः क्षत्तः स्यादन्नसंयुतः ।
तुष्येच्च यज्ञसदने तथा क्षिप्रं विधीयताम् ॥२०॥
20. yathā sukhī janaḥ sarvaḥ kṣattaḥ syādannasaṁyutaḥ ,
tuṣyecca yajñasadane tathā kṣipraṁ vidhīyatām.
20. yathā sukhī janaḥ sarvaḥ kṣattaḥ syāt annasaṃyutaḥ
tuṣyet ca yajñasadane tathā kṣipram vidhīyatām
20. O Vidura, so that all people are happy and supplied with food, and are satisfied in the sacrificial hall (yajña), let this be done quickly.
विदुरस्त्वेवमाज्ञप्तः सर्ववर्णानरिंदम ।
यथाप्रमाणतो विद्वान्पूजयामास धर्मवित् ॥२१॥
21. vidurastvevamājñaptaḥ sarvavarṇānariṁdama ,
yathāpramāṇato vidvānpūjayāmāsa dharmavit.
21. viduraḥ tu evam ājñaptaḥ sarvavarṇān ariṃdama
yathāpramāṇataḥ vidvān pūjayāmāsa dharmavit
21. O destroyer of foes, Vidura, the wise one and knower of natural law (dharma), thus instructed, then worshipped all the social classes (varṇa) as was proper.
भक्ष्यभोज्यान्नपानेन माल्यैश्चापि सुगन्धिभिः ।
वासोभिर्विविधैश्चैव योजयामास हृष्टवत् ॥२२॥
22. bhakṣyabhojyānnapānena mālyaiścāpi sugandhibhiḥ ,
vāsobhirvividhaiścaiva yojayāmāsa hṛṣṭavat.
22. bhakṣyabhojyānnapānena mālyaiḥ ca api sugandhibhiḥ
vāsobhiḥ vividhaiḥ ca eva yojayāmāsa hṛṣṭavat
22. He joyfully arranged for various edibles, foods, and drinks, as well as fragrant garlands and various garments.
कृत्वा ह्यवभृथं वीरो यथाशास्त्रं यथाक्रमम् ।
सान्त्वयित्वा च राजेन्द्रो दत्त्वा च विविधं वसु ।
विसर्जयामास नृपान्ब्राह्मणांश्च सहस्रशः ॥२३॥
23. kṛtvā hyavabhṛthaṁ vīro yathāśāstraṁ yathākramam ,
sāntvayitvā ca rājendro dattvā ca vividhaṁ vasu ,
visarjayāmāsa nṛpānbrāhmaṇāṁśca sahasraśaḥ.
23. kṛtvā hi avabhṛtham vīraḥ yathāśāstram
yathākramam sāntvayitvā ca
rājendraḥ dattvā ca vividham vasu
visarjayāmāsa nṛpān brāhmaṇān ca sahasraśaḥ
23. Indeed, the hero, the great king, having performed the final purificatory bath (avabhṛtha) according to the scriptures and the proper procedure, and having consoled and given various kinds of wealth, then dismissed thousands of kings and brahmins.
विसर्जयित्वा स नृपान्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ।
विवेश हास्तिनपुरं सहितः कर्णसौबलैः ॥२४॥
24. visarjayitvā sa nṛpānbhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
viveśa hāstinapuraṁ sahitaḥ karṇasaubalaiḥ.
24. visarjayitvā saḥ nṛpān bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ
viveśa hāstinapuram sahitaḥ karṇasaubalaiḥ
24. Having dismissed the kings, he, surrounded by his brothers, entered Hastinapura, accompanied by Karna and Saubala (Śakuni).
