भीष्म उवाच ।
अथ तेन नरश्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणेन तपस्विना ।
निराहारेण वसता दुःखितास्ते भुजंगमाः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atha tena naraśreṣṭha brāhmaṇena tapasvinā ,
nirāhāreṇa vasatā duḥkhitāste bhujaṁgamāḥ.

tapasvinā nirāhāreṇa vasatā duḥkhitāḥ te bhujaṅgamāḥ
1. Bhishma said: Now, O best among men (naraśreṣṭha), those serpents became distressed because of that Brahmin, the ascetic, who was residing there without food.
सर्वे संभूय सहितास्तस्य नागस्य बान्धवाः ।
भ्रातरस्तनया भार्या ययुस्तं ब्राह्मणं प्रति ॥२॥
2. sarve saṁbhūya sahitāstasya nāgasya bāndhavāḥ ,
bhrātarastanayā bhāryā yayustaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ prati.
2. sarve saṃbhūya sahitāḥ tasya nāgasya bāndhavāḥ
bhrātaraḥ tanayāḥ bhāryā yayuḥ taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ prati
2. tasya nāgasya bāndhavāḥ bhrātaraḥ tanayāḥ bhāryā
sarve sahitāḥ saṃbhūya taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ prati yayuḥ
2. All the relatives of that nāga - his brothers, sons, and wife - assembled together and went towards that brahmin.
तेऽपश्यन्पुलिने तं वै विविक्ते नियतव्रतम् ।
समासीनं निराहारं द्विजं जप्यपरायणम् ॥३॥
3. te'paśyanpuline taṁ vai vivikte niyatavratam ,
samāsīnaṁ nirāhāraṁ dvijaṁ japyaparāyaṇam.
3. te apaśyan puline taṃ vai vivikte niyatavratam
samāsīnam nirāhāram dvijam japyaparāyaṇam
3. te vai puline vivikte niyatavratam samāsīnam
nirāhāram japyaparāyaṇam taṃ dvijam apaśyan
3. They indeed saw that brahmin (dvija) on a secluded sandbank, seated and fasting, observing strict vows and devoted to prayer (japa).
ते सर्वे समभिक्रम्य विप्रमभ्यर्च्य चासकृत् ।
ऊचुर्वाक्यमसंदिग्धमातिथेयस्य बान्धवाः ॥४॥
4. te sarve samabhikramya vipramabhyarcya cāsakṛt ,
ūcurvākyamasaṁdigdhamātitheyasya bāndhavāḥ.
4. te sarve samabhikramya vipram abhyarcya ca asakṛt
ūcuḥ vākyam asaṃdigdham ātitheyasya bāndhavāḥ
4. te sarve bāndhavāḥ vipram samabhikramya ca asakṛt
abhyarcya ātitheyasya asaṃdigdham vākyam ūcuḥ
4. All those relatives, having approached and repeatedly honored the brahmin, then spoke clear words concerning hospitality.
षष्ठो हि दिवसस्तेऽद्य प्राप्तस्येह तपोधन ।
न चाभिलषसे किंचिदाहारं धर्मवत्सल ॥५॥
5. ṣaṣṭho hi divasaste'dya prāptasyeha tapodhana ,
na cābhilaṣase kiṁcidāhāraṁ dharmavatsala.
5. ṣaṣṭhaḥ hi divasaḥ te adya prāptasya iha tapodhana
na ca abhilaṣase kiṃcit āhāram dharmavatsala
5. tapodhana dharmavatsala adya iha prāptasya te hi
ṣaṣṭhaḥ divasaḥ ca kiṃcit āhāram na abhilaṣase
5. O ascetic (tapasvin), it is indeed the sixth day since you arrived here today, yet you do not desire any food, O lover of righteousness (dharma).
अस्मानभिगतश्चासि वयं च त्वामुपस्थिताः ।
कार्यं चातिथ्यमस्माभिर्वयं सर्वे कुटुम्बिनः ॥६॥
6. asmānabhigataścāsi vayaṁ ca tvāmupasthitāḥ ,
kāryaṁ cātithyamasmābhirvayaṁ sarve kuṭumbinaḥ.
6. asmān abhigataḥ ca asi vayam ca tvām upasthitāḥ
kāryam ca ātithyam asmābhiḥ vayam sarve kuṭumbinaḥ
6. You have arrived before us, and we have come to you. Hospitality must be extended by us, for we are all members of this household.
मूलं फलं वा पर्णं वा पयो वा द्विजसत्तम ।
आहारहेतोरन्नं वा भोक्तुमर्हसि ब्राह्मण ॥७॥
7. mūlaṁ phalaṁ vā parṇaṁ vā payo vā dvijasattama ,
āhārahetorannaṁ vā bhoktumarhasi brāhmaṇa.
7. mūlam phalam vā parṇam vā payaḥ vā dvijasattama
āhārahetoḥ annam vā bhoktum arhasi brāhmaṇa
7. O best among the twice-born (dvija), O Brahmin, you should partake of roots, or fruits, or leaves, or milk, or food for your sustenance.
त्यक्ताहारेण भवता वने निवसता सता ।
बालवृद्धमिदं सर्वं पीड्यते धर्मसंकटात् ॥८॥
8. tyaktāhāreṇa bhavatā vane nivasatā satā ,
bālavṛddhamidaṁ sarvaṁ pīḍyate dharmasaṁkaṭāt.
8. tyaktāhāreṇa bhavatā vane nivasatā satā
bālavṛddham idam sarvam pīḍyate dharmasaṅkaṭāt
8. Because of you, residing in the forest and having abandoned food, this entire community of children and elders is suffering from a crisis of natural law (dharma).
न हि नो भ्रूणहा कश्चिद्राजापथ्योऽनृतोऽपि वा ।
पूर्वाशी वा कुले ह्यस्मिन्देवतातिथिबन्धुषु ॥९॥
9. na hi no bhrūṇahā kaścidrājāpathyo'nṛto'pi vā ,
pūrvāśī vā kule hyasmindevatātithibandhuṣu.
9. na hi naḥ bhrūṇahā kaścit rājāpathyaḥ anṛtaḥ api
vā pūrvāśī vā kule hi asmin devatātithibandhuṣu
9. Indeed, in this family (kula), there is no one among us who is a killer of the unborn (bhrūṇahā), disloyal to the king, or untruthful; nor is there anyone who eats before the gods, guests, and relatives.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
उपदेशेन युष्माकमाहारोऽयं मया वृतः ।
द्विरूनं दशरात्रं वै नागस्यागमनं प्रति ॥१०॥
10. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
upadeśena yuṣmākamāhāro'yaṁ mayā vṛtaḥ ,
dvirūnaṁ daśarātraṁ vai nāgasyāgamanaṁ prati.
10. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca upadeśena yuṣmākam āhāraḥ ayam mayā
vṛtaḥ dvīrūnam daśarātram vai nāgasya āgamanam prati
10. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca yuṣmākam upadeśena ayam āhāraḥ mayā
vṛtaḥ nāgasya āgamanam prati vai dvīrūnam daśarātram
10. The brahmin said: 'I have accepted this meal according to your instruction. The serpent's arrival is indeed expected in eight nights (literally, two less than ten nights).'
यद्यष्टरात्रे निर्याते नागमिष्यति पन्नगः ।
तदाहारं करिष्यामि तन्निमित्तमिदं व्रतम् ॥११॥
11. yadyaṣṭarātre niryāte nāgamiṣyati pannagaḥ ,
tadāhāraṁ kariṣyāmi tannimittamidaṁ vratam.
11. yadi aṣṭarātre niryāte na āgamiṣyati pannagaḥ
tadā āhāram kariṣyāmi tat-nimittam idam vratam
11. yadi aṣṭarātre niryāte pannagaḥ na āgamiṣyati
tadā āhāram kariṣyāmi idam vratam tat-nimittam
11. If, after eight nights have passed, the serpent does not arrive, then I will take a meal. This observance (vrata) is for that purpose.
कर्तव्यो न च संतापो गम्यतां च यथागतम् ।
तन्निमित्तं व्रतं मह्यं नैतद्भेत्तुमिहार्हथ ॥१२॥
12. kartavyo na ca saṁtāpo gamyatāṁ ca yathāgatam ,
tannimittaṁ vrataṁ mahyaṁ naitadbhettumihārhatha.
12. kartavyaḥ na ca saṃtāpaḥ gamyatām ca yathāgatam
tat-nimittam vratam mahyam na etat bhettum iha arhatha
12. saṃtāpaḥ na ca kartavyaḥ ca yathāgatam gamyatām etat
vratam mahyam tat-nimittam iha bhettum na arhatha
12. No distress should be caused, and you (plural) should depart as you arrived. This observance (vrata) is for my purpose, and you ought not to break it here.
भीष्म उवाच ।
तेन ते समनुज्ञाता ब्राह्मणेन भुजंगमाः ।
स्वमेव भवनं जग्मुरकृतार्था नरर्षभ ॥१३॥
13. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tena te samanujñātā brāhmaṇena bhujaṁgamāḥ ,
svameva bhavanaṁ jagmurakṛtārthā nararṣabha.
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tena te samanuñātāḥ brāhmaṇena bhujaṃgamāḥ
svam eva bhavanam jagmuḥ akṛtārthāḥ nararṣabha
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca nararṣabha tena brāhmaṇena samanuñātāḥ
te bhujaṃgamāḥ akṛtārthāḥ svam eva bhavanam jagmuḥ
13. Bhishma said: 'O best of men (nararṣabha), those serpents, having been dismissed by that brahmin, went to their own dwelling, their purpose unfulfilled.'
