वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा दुर्योधनो वाक्यमप्रियं कुरुसंसदि ।
प्रत्युवाच महाबाहुं वासुदेवं यशस्विनम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā duryodhano vākyamapriyaṁ kurusaṁsadi ,
pratyuvāca mahābāhuṁ vāsudevaṁ yaśasvinam.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca śrutvā duryodhanaḥ vākyam apriyam
kurusaṃsadi pratyuvāca mahābāhum vāsudevam yaśasvinam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard the unpleasant speech in the assembly of the Kurus (kurusaṃsadi), Duryodhana replied to the mighty-armed, glorious Vāsudeva.
प्रसमीक्ष्य भवानेतद्वक्तुमर्हति केशव ।
मामेव हि विशेषेण विभाष्य परिगर्हसे ॥२॥
2. prasamīkṣya bhavānetadvaktumarhati keśava ,
māmeva hi viśeṣeṇa vibhāṣya parigarhase.
2. prasamīkṣya bhavān etat vaktum arhati keśava
mām eva hi viśeṣeṇa vibhāṣya parigarhase
2. O Keśava, you should speak this only after careful consideration. Indeed, you particularly criticize me, having already condemned me.
भक्तिवादेन पार्थानामकस्मान्मधुसूदन ।
भवान्गर्हयते नित्यं किं समीक्ष्य बलाबलम् ॥३॥
3. bhaktivādena pārthānāmakasmānmadhusūdana ,
bhavāngarhayate nityaṁ kiṁ samīkṣya balābalam.
3. bhaktivādena pārthānām akasmāt madhusūdana
bhavān garhayate nityam kim samīkṣya balābalam
3. O Madhusūdana, considering the relative strengths and weaknesses, why do you constantly blame (me) without cause, using the devotion of the Pārthas (Pāṇḍavas) as a pretext?
भवान्क्षत्ता च राजा च आचार्यो वा पितामहः ।
मामेव परिगर्हन्ते नान्यं कंचन पार्थिवम् ॥४॥
4. bhavānkṣattā ca rājā ca ācāryo vā pitāmahaḥ ,
māmeva parigarhante nānyaṁ kaṁcana pārthivam.
4. bhavān kṣattā ca rājā ca ācāryaḥ vā pitāmahaḥ
mām eva parigarḥante na anyam kaṃcana pārthivam
4. You (Krishna), Vidura, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the preceptor Droṇa, and even the grandsire Bhīṣma - all of you criticize only me, not any other king.
न चाहं लक्षये कंचिद्व्यभिचारमिहात्मनः ।
अथ सर्वे भवन्तो मां विद्विषन्ति सराजकाः ॥५॥
5. na cāhaṁ lakṣaye kaṁcidvyabhicāramihātmanaḥ ,
atha sarve bhavanto māṁ vidviṣanti sarājakāḥ.
5. na ca aham lakṣaye kaṃcit vyabhicāram iha ātmanaḥ
atha sarve bhavantaḥ mām vidviṣanti sarājakāḥ
5. And I, for my part, do not find any transgression (vyabhicāra) of my own (ātman) here. Therefore, all of you, including the kings, surely hate me.
न चाहं कंचिदत्यर्थमपराधमरिंदम ।
विचिन्तयन्प्रपश्यामि सुसूक्ष्ममपि केशव ॥६॥
6. na cāhaṁ kaṁcidatyarthamaparādhamariṁdama ,
vicintayanprapaśyāmi susūkṣmamapi keśava.
6. na ca aham kaṃcit atyartham aparādham ariṃdama
vicintayan prapaśyāmi susūkṣmam api keśava
6. And I, O subduer of foes (ariṃdama), O Keśava, do not perceive any exceedingly grave offense, not even a very subtle one, even when I carefully reflect.
प्रियाभ्युपगते द्यूते पाण्डवा मधुसूदन ।
जिताः शकुनिना राज्यं तत्र किं मम दुष्कृतम् ॥७॥
7. priyābhyupagate dyūte pāṇḍavā madhusūdana ,
jitāḥ śakuninā rājyaṁ tatra kiṁ mama duṣkṛtam.

jitāḥ śakuninā rājyam tatra kim mama duṣkṛtam
7. O Madhusūdana, when the Pandavas were defeated by Shakuni in the game of dice, to which they had eagerly consented, and lost their kingdom, what wrong deed is mine in that?
यत्पुनर्द्रविणं किंचित्तत्राजीयन्त पाण्डवाः ।
तेभ्य एवाभ्यनुज्ञातं तत्तदा मधुसूदन ॥८॥
8. yatpunardraviṇaṁ kiṁcittatrājīyanta pāṇḍavāḥ ,
tebhya evābhyanujñātaṁ tattadā madhusūdana.
8. yat punaḥ draviṇam kiñcit tatra ajīyanta pāṇḍavāḥ
tebhyaḥ eva abhyanujñātam tat tadā madhusūdana
8. O Madhusūdana, whatever other wealth the Pandavas lost there, that indeed was immediately returned to them.
अपराधो न चास्माकं यत्ते ह्यक्षपराजिताः ।
अजेया जयतां श्रेष्ठ पार्थाः प्रव्राजिता वनम् ॥९॥
9. aparādho na cāsmākaṁ yatte hyakṣaparājitāḥ ,
ajeyā jayatāṁ śreṣṭha pārthāḥ pravrājitā vanam.
9. aparādhaḥ na ca asmākam yat te hi akṣaparājitāḥ
ajeyā jayatām śreṣṭha pārthāḥ pravrājitāḥ vanam
9. And it is not our fault that those Pārthas (Pandavas), who are unconquerable and the best among victors, were indeed defeated by the dice and exiled to the forest.
केन चाप्यपवादेन विरुध्यन्तेऽरिभिः सह ।
अशक्ताः पाण्डवाः कृष्ण प्रहृष्टाः प्रत्यमित्रवत् ॥१०॥
10. kena cāpyapavādena virudhyante'ribhiḥ saha ,
aśaktāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa prahṛṣṭāḥ pratyamitravat.
10. kena ca api apavādena virudhyante aribhiḥ saha
aśaktāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa prahṛṣṭāḥ pratyamitravat
10. O Krishna, by what pretext do these powerless Pandavas engage in hostility with their adversaries? They are joyful, acting like adversaries.
किमस्माभिः कृतं तेषां कस्मिन्वा पुनरागसि ।
धार्तराष्ट्राञ्जिघांसन्ति पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयैः सह ॥११॥
11. kimasmābhiḥ kṛtaṁ teṣāṁ kasminvā punarāgasi ,
dhārtarāṣṭrāñjighāṁsanti pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha.
11. kim asmābhiḥ kṛtam teṣām kasmin vā punar āgasi
dhārtarāṣṭrān jighāṃsanti pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha
11. What wrong have we done to them, or what repeated offense have we committed? The Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by the Sṛñjayas, desire to kill the Dhārtarāṣṭras.
न चापि वयमुग्रेण कर्मणा वचनेन वा ।
वित्रस्ताः प्रणमामेह भयादपि शतक्रतोः ॥१२॥
12. na cāpi vayamugreṇa karmaṇā vacanena vā ,
vitrastāḥ praṇamāmeha bhayādapi śatakratoḥ.
12. na ca api vayam ugreṇa karmaṇā vacanena vā
vitrastāḥ praṇamāma iha bhayāt api śatakratoḥ
12. Nor would we, even if terrified by a dreadful deed (karma) or utterance, bow down here, not even out of fear of Indra (Śatakratu).
न च तं कृष्ण पश्यामि क्षत्रधर्ममनुष्ठितम् ।
उत्सहेत युधा जेतुं यो नः शत्रुनिबर्हण ॥१३॥
13. na ca taṁ kṛṣṇa paśyāmi kṣatradharmamanuṣṭhitam ,
utsaheta yudhā jetuṁ yo naḥ śatrunibarhaṇa.
13. na ca tam kṛṣṇa paśyāmi kṣatradharmam anuṣṭhitam
utsaheta yudhā jetum yaḥ naḥ śatrunibarhaṇa
13. And, O Kṛṣṇa, I do not see that one - who is a destroyer of enemies (śatrunibarhaṇa) - as having properly observed the warrior's natural law (kṣatradharma) such that he would be able to conquer us in battle.
न हि भीष्मकृपद्रोणाः सगणा मधुसूदन ।
देवैरपि युधा जेतुं शक्याः किमुत पाण्डवैः ॥१४॥
14. na hi bhīṣmakṛpadroṇāḥ sagaṇā madhusūdana ,
devairapi yudhā jetuṁ śakyāḥ kimuta pāṇḍavaiḥ.
14. na hi bhīṣmakṛpadroṇāḥ sagaṇā madhusūdana
devaiḥ api yudhā jetum śakyāḥ kim uta pāṇḍavaiḥ
14. For indeed, O Madhusūdana, Bhīṣma, Kṛpa, and Droṇa, together with their retinues, cannot be conquered in battle even by the gods, much less by the Pāṇḍavas.
स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठन्तो यदि माधव संयुगे ।
शस्त्रेण निधनं काले प्राप्स्यामः स्वर्गमेव तत् ॥१५॥
15. svadharmamanutiṣṭhanto yadi mādhava saṁyuge ,
śastreṇa nidhanaṁ kāle prāpsyāmaḥ svargameva tat.
15. svadharmam anutiṣṭhantaḥ yadi mādhava saṃyuge
śastreṇa nidhanam kāle prāpsyāmaḥ svargam eva tat
15. If, O Madhava, while upholding our own natural law (svadharma), we meet our death by weapons in battle at the appointed time, that indeed is heaven.
मुख्यश्चैवैष नो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां जनार्दन ।
यच्छयीमहि संग्रामे शरतल्पगता वयम् ॥१६॥
16. mukhyaścaivaiṣa no dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ janārdana ,
yacchayīmahi saṁgrāme śaratalpagatā vayam.
16. mukhyaḥ ca eva eṣaḥ naḥ dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇām
janārdana yat śayīmahi saṃgrāme śaratapalpagatā vayam
16. And this, O Janardana, is indeed our primary natural law (dharma) as Kṣatriyas: that we should lie down in battle, fallen upon a bed of arrows.
ते वयं वीरशयनं प्राप्स्यामो यदि संयुगे ।
अप्रणम्यैव शत्रूणां न नस्तप्स्यति माधव ॥१७॥
17. te vayaṁ vīraśayanaṁ prāpsyāmo yadi saṁyuge ,
apraṇamyaiva śatrūṇāṁ na nastapsyati mādhava.
17. te vayam vīraśayanam prāpsyāmaḥ yadi saṃyuge
apraṇamya eva śatrūṇām na naḥ tapsyati mādhava
17. If we, in battle, achieve a hero's bed without ever bowing to our enemies, O Madhava, it will not cause us grief.
कश्च जातु कुले जातः क्षत्रधर्मेण वर्तयन् ।
भयाद्वृत्तिं समीक्ष्यैवं प्रणमेदिह कस्यचित् ॥१८॥
18. kaśca jātu kule jātaḥ kṣatradharmeṇa vartayan ,
bhayādvṛttiṁ samīkṣyaivaṁ praṇamediha kasyacit.
18. kaḥ ca jātu kule jātaḥ kṣatradharmeṇa vartayan
bhayāt vṛttim samīkṣya evam praṇamet iha kasyacit
18. And who, indeed, born in a noble family and upholding the natural law (kṣatradharma) of a warrior, would ever bow to anyone here out of fear, considering (such) a livelihood?
उद्यच्छेदेव न नमेदुद्यमो ह्येव पौरुषम् ।
अप्यपर्वणि भज्येत न नमेदिह कस्यचित् ॥१९॥
19. udyacchedeva na namedudyamo hyeva pauruṣam ,
apyaparvaṇi bhajyeta na namediha kasyacit.
19. udyacchet eva na namet udyamaḥ hi eva pauruṣam
api aparvaṇi bhajyeta na namet iha kasyacit
19. One should always strive and never bend, for exertion (udyam) itself is true manliness (pauruṣa). Even if one were to break at an unsuitable time, one should never bow down to anyone in this world.
इति मातङ्गवचनं परीप्सन्ति हितेप्सवः ।
धर्माय चैव प्रणमेद्ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च मद्विधः ॥२०॥
20. iti mātaṅgavacanaṁ parīpsanti hitepsavaḥ ,
dharmāya caiva praṇamedbrāhmaṇebhyaśca madvidhaḥ.
20. iti mātaṅgavacanam parīpsanti hitepsavaḥ dharmāya
ca eva praṇamet brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca madvidhaḥ
20. Thus, those who desire their own welfare (hitepsavaḥ) seek these words (vacanam) of Mātanga. And indeed, one like me should bow down (praṇamet) to the natural law (dharma) and to brahmins.
अचिन्तयन्कंचिदन्यं यावज्जीवं तथाचरेत् ।
एष धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां मतमेतच्च मे सदा ॥२१॥
21. acintayankaṁcidanyaṁ yāvajjīvaṁ tathācaret ,
eṣa dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ matametacca me sadā.
21. acintayan kañcit anyam yāvat jīvam tathā ācaret
eṣaḥ dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇām matam etat ca me sadā
21. Without considering anyone else, one should behave in this manner (tathā) throughout one's life (yāvajjīvam). This is the natural law (dharma) for kṣatriyas, and this has always been my opinion (matam).
राज्यांशश्चाभ्यनुज्ञातो यो मे पित्रा पुराभवत् ।
न स लभ्यः पुनर्जातु मयि जीवति केशव ॥२२॥
22. rājyāṁśaścābhyanujñāto yo me pitrā purābhavat ,
na sa labhyaḥ punarjātu mayi jīvati keśava.
22. rājyāṃśaḥ ca abhyanujñātaḥ yaḥ me pitrā purā
abhavat na saḥ labhyaḥ punaḥ jātu mayi jīvati keśava
22. And the share of the kingdom (rājyāṃśa) that was granted to me by my father in the past - that (share) can never (jātu) be obtained again as long as I live, O Keśava.
यावच्च राजा ध्रियते धृतराष्ट्रो जनार्दन ।
न्यस्तशस्त्रा वयं ते वाप्युपजीवाम माधव ॥२३॥
23. yāvacca rājā dhriyate dhṛtarāṣṭro janārdana ,
nyastaśastrā vayaṁ te vāpyupajīvāma mādhava.
23. yāvat ca rājā dhriyate dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ janārdana
nyastaśastrā vayam te vā api upajīvāma mādhava
23. O Janārdana, as long as King Dhṛtarāṣṭra is alive, we, having laid down our weapons, will live dependent on him, O Mādhava.
यद्यदेयं पुरा दत्तं राज्यं परवतो मम ।
अज्ञानाद्वा भयाद्वापि मयि बाले जनार्दन ॥२४॥
24. yadyadeyaṁ purā dattaṁ rājyaṁ paravato mama ,
ajñānādvā bhayādvāpi mayi bāle janārdana.
24. yat yat idam purā dattam rājyam paravataḥ mama
ajñānāt vā bhayāt vā api mayi bāle janārdana
24. O Janārdana, whatever kingdom was given by me previously, when I was a child and dependent on others, whether out of ignorance or fear...
न तदद्य पुनर्लभ्यं पाण्डवैर्वृष्णिनन्दन ।
ध्रियमाणे महाबाहो मयि संप्रति केशव ॥२५॥
25. na tadadya punarlabhyaṁ pāṇḍavairvṛṣṇinandana ,
dhriyamāṇe mahābāho mayi saṁprati keśava.
25. na tat adya punaḥ labhyam pāṇḍavaiḥ vṛṣṇinandana
dhriyamāṇe mahābāho mayi samprati keśava
25. O Vṛṣṇinandana, that (kingdom) cannot be regained by the Pāṇḍavas today, O mighty-armed one, while I, O Keśava, am still alive.
यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण माधव ।
तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥२६॥
26. yāvaddhi sūcyāstīkṣṇāyā vidhyedagreṇa mādhava ,
tāvadapyaparityājyaṁ bhūmernaḥ pāṇḍavānprati.
26. yāvat hi sūcyāḥ tīkṣṇāyāḥ vidhyet agreṇa mādhava
tāvat api aparityājyam bhūmeḥ naḥ pāṇḍavān prati
26. O Mādhava, even that much land that one could pierce with the tip of a sharp needle is not to be relinquished by us to the Pāṇḍavas.
