युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
असांनिध्यं कथं कृष्ण तवासीद्वृष्णिनन्दन ।
क्व चासीद्विप्रवासस्ते किं वाकार्षीः प्रवासकः ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
asāṁnidhyaṁ kathaṁ kṛṣṇa tavāsīdvṛṣṇinandana ,
kva cāsīdvipravāsaste kiṁ vākārṣīḥ pravāsakaḥ.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca asāṃnidhyaṃ kathaṃ kṛṣṇa tava āsīt
vṛṣṇinandan kva ca āsīt vipravāsaḥ te kiṃ vā akārṣīḥ pravāsakaḥ
1. Yudhishthira said: "How was your absence possible, O Krishna, O delight of the Vṛṣṇis? Where were you staying, and what did you do as a traveler?"
कृष्ण उवाच ।
शाल्वस्य नगरं सौभं गतोऽहं भरतर्षभ ।
विनिहन्तुं नरश्रेष्ठ तत्र मे शृणु कारणम् ॥२॥
2. kṛṣṇa uvāca ,
śālvasya nagaraṁ saubhaṁ gato'haṁ bharatarṣabha ,
vinihantuṁ naraśreṣṭha tatra me śṛṇu kāraṇam.
2. kṛṣṇaḥ uvāca śālvasya nagaraṃ saubhaṃ gataḥ aham
bharatarṣabha vinihantuṃ naraśreṣṭha tatra me śṛṇu kāraṇam
2. Krishna said: "O best of the Bharatas, O best among men, I went to Saubha, the city of Śālva, to destroy it. Hear from me the reason there."
महातेजा महाबाहुर्यः स राजा महायशाः ।
दमघोषात्मजो वीरः शिशुपालो मया हतः ॥३॥
3. mahātejā mahābāhuryaḥ sa rājā mahāyaśāḥ ,
damaghoṣātmajo vīraḥ śiśupālo mayā hataḥ.
3. mahātejāḥ mahābāhuḥ yaḥ saḥ rājā mahāyaśāḥ
damaghoṣātmajaḥ vīraḥ śiśupālaḥ mayā hataḥ
3. That king, Śiśupāla, who was of great splendor, mighty-armed, and highly renowned, the son of Damaghoṣa and a hero, was killed by me.
यज्ञे ते भरतश्रेष्ठ राजसूयेऽर्हणां प्रति ।
स रोषवशसंप्राप्तो नामृष्यत दुरात्मवान् ॥४॥
4. yajñe te bharataśreṣṭha rājasūye'rhaṇāṁ prati ,
sa roṣavaśasaṁprāpto nāmṛṣyata durātmavān.
4. yajñe te bharataśreṣṭha rājasūye arhaṇām prati
sa roṣavaśasaṃprāptaḥ na amṛṣyata durātmavān
4. bharataśreṣṭha te rājasūye yajñe arhaṇām prati
saḥ durātmavān roṣavaśasaṃprāptaḥ na amṛṣyata
4. O best of the Bharatas (bharataśreṣṭha), that wicked person (durātmavān), overcome by anger, could not endure the honors (arhaṇā) bestowed upon you during the Rājasūya Vedic ritual (yajña).
श्रुत्वा तं निहतं शाल्वस्तीव्ररोषसमन्वितः ।
उपायाद्द्वारकां शून्यामिहस्थे मयि भारत ॥५॥
5. śrutvā taṁ nihataṁ śālvastīvraroṣasamanvitaḥ ,
upāyāddvārakāṁ śūnyāmihasthe mayi bhārata.
5. śrutvā tam nihatam śālvaḥ tīvraroṣasamanvitaḥ
upāyāt dvārakām śūnyām ihasthe mayi bhārata
5. Having heard that he (Śiśupāla, his ally) was killed, Śālva, filled with intense rage, approached Dvārakā, which was empty while I was away here, O Bhārata.
स तत्र योधितो राजन्बालकैर्वृष्णिपुंगवैः ।
आगतः कामगं सौभमारुह्यैव नृशंसकृत् ॥६॥
6. sa tatra yodhito rājanbālakairvṛṣṇipuṁgavaiḥ ,
āgataḥ kāmagaṁ saubhamāruhyaiva nṛśaṁsakṛt.
6. sa tatra yodhitaḥ rājan bālakaiḥ vṛṣṇipuṅgavaiḥ
āgataḥ kāmagam saubham āruhya eva nṛśaṃsakṛt
6. There, O King, he was engaged in battle by the boys, the foremost among the Vṛṣṇis. That cruel one had arrived, having indeed ascended the aerial city (Saubha) that moves as desired.
ततो वृष्णिप्रवीरांस्तान्बालान्हत्वा बहूंस्तदा ।
पुरोद्यानानि सर्वाणि भेदयामास दुर्मतिः ॥७॥
7. tato vṛṣṇipravīrāṁstānbālānhatvā bahūṁstadā ,
purodyānāni sarvāṇi bhedayāmāsa durmatiḥ.
7. tataḥ vṛṣṇipravīrān tān bālān hatvā bahūn tadā
purodyānāni sarvāṇi bhedayām āsa durmatiḥ
7. Then, having killed those many boys who were the chief warriors among the Vṛṣṇis, that evil-minded one destroyed all the city gardens.
उक्तवांश्च महाबाहो क्वासौ वृष्णिकुलाधमः ।
वासुदेवः सुमन्दात्मा वसुदेवसुतो गतः ॥८॥
8. uktavāṁśca mahābāho kvāsau vṛṣṇikulādhamaḥ ,
vāsudevaḥ sumandātmā vasudevasuto gataḥ.
8. uktavān ca mahābāho kva asau vṛṣṇikulādhamaḥ
vāsudevaḥ sumandātmā vasudevasutaḥ gataḥ
8. And he said, 'O mighty-armed one, where has that most inferior one of the Vṛṣṇi clan, Vāsudeva, that extremely dull-witted son of Vasudeva, gone?'
तस्य युद्धार्थिनो दर्पं युद्धे नाशयितास्म्यहम् ।
आनर्ताः सत्यमाख्यात तत्र गन्तास्मि यत्र सः ॥९॥
9. tasya yuddhārthino darpaṁ yuddhe nāśayitāsmyaham ,
ānartāḥ satyamākhyāta tatra gantāsmi yatra saḥ.
9. tasya yuddhārthinaḥ darpam yuddhe nāśayitāsmi aham
ānartāḥ satyam ākhyāta tatra gantāsmi yatra saḥ
9. I will destroy the pride of that battle-seeker in combat. O people of Anarta, tell me truly: I will go to wherever he is.
तं हत्वा विनिवर्तिष्ये कंसकेशिनिषूदनम् ।
अहत्वा न निवर्तिष्ये सत्येनायुधमालभे ॥१०॥
10. taṁ hatvā vinivartiṣye kaṁsakeśiniṣūdanam ,
ahatvā na nivartiṣye satyenāyudhamālabhe.
10. tam hatvā vinivartiṣye kaṃsakeśiniṣūdanam
ahatvā na nivartiṣye satyena āyudham ālabhe
10. Only after killing him - the slayer of Kaṃsa and Keśin - will I return. If I do not kill him, I will not return. I swear by my weapon, by this truth.
क्वासौ क्वासाविति पुनस्तत्र तत्र विधावति ।
मया किल रणे युद्धं काङ्क्षमाणः स सौभराट् ॥११॥
11. kvāsau kvāsāviti punastatra tatra vidhāvati ,
mayā kila raṇe yuddhaṁ kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ sa saubharāṭ.
11. kva asau kva asau iti punaḥ tatra tatra vidhāvāti
mayā kila raṇe yuddham kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ saḥ saubharāṭ
11. That great king Saubhara, indeed seeking battle with me, is now running here and there, repeatedly asking, 'Where is he? Where is he?'
अद्य तं पापकर्माणं क्षुद्रं विश्वासघातिनम् ।
शिशुपालवधामर्षाद्गमयिष्ये यमक्षयम् ॥१२॥
12. adya taṁ pāpakarmāṇaṁ kṣudraṁ viśvāsaghātinam ,
śiśupālavadhāmarṣādgamayiṣye yamakṣayam.
12. adya tam pāpakarmāṇam kṣudram viśvāsaghātinam
śiśupālavadhāmarṣāt gamayiṣye yamakṣayam
12. Today, out of anger for the slaying of Śiśupāla, I will send that evil-doing (karma), wretched betrayer to the abode of Yama.
मम पापस्वभावेन भ्राता येन निपातितः ।
शिशुपालो महीपालस्तं वधिष्ये महीतले ॥१३॥
13. mama pāpasvabhāvena bhrātā yena nipātitaḥ ,
śiśupālo mahīpālastaṁ vadhiṣye mahītale.
13. mama pāpasvabhāvena bhrātā yena nipātitaḥ
śiśupālaḥ mahīpālaḥ tam vadhiṣye mahītale
13. My brother, King Śiśupāla, was killed by that one whose nature is sinful. Therefore, I will kill him on this earth.
भ्राता बालश्च राजा च न च संग्राममूर्धनि ।
प्रमत्तश्च हतो वीरस्तं हनिष्ये जनार्दनम् ॥१४॥
14. bhrātā bālaśca rājā ca na ca saṁgrāmamūrdhani ,
pramattaśca hato vīrastaṁ haniṣye janārdanam.
14. bhrātā bālaḥ ca rājā ca na ca saṃgrāmamūrdhani
pramattaḥ ca hataḥ vīraḥ tam haniṣye janārdanam
14. My brother, a king and still a boy, was killed as a hero, but not in the heat of battle, and he was unprepared. Therefore, I will kill Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa).
एवमादि महाराज विलप्य दिवमास्थितः ।
कामगेन स सौभेन क्षिप्त्वा मां कुरुनन्दन ॥१५॥
15. evamādi mahārāja vilapya divamāsthitaḥ ,
kāmagena sa saubhena kṣiptvā māṁ kurunandana.
15. evamādi mahārāja vilapya divam āsthitaḥ
kāmagena sa saubhena kṣiptvā mām kurunandana
15. Having thus lamented, O great king, he (Salva), having ascended to the sky in his wish-moving (flying city) Saubha, sent me (the messenger), O delight of the Kurus.
तमश्रौषमहं गत्वा यथा वृत्तः सुदुर्मतिः ।
मयि कौरव्य दुष्टात्मा मार्त्तिकावतको नृपः ॥१६॥
16. tamaśrauṣamahaṁ gatvā yathā vṛttaḥ sudurmatiḥ ,
mayi kauravya duṣṭātmā mārttikāvatako nṛpaḥ.
16. tam aśrauṣam aham gatvā yathā vṛttaḥ sudurmatiḥ
mayi kauravya duṣṭātmā mārttikāvatakaḥ nṛpaḥ
16. O descendant of Kuru, having gone, I heard how that utterly wicked-minded, evil-souled king, the king of Mārtikāvata (Kṛṣṇa), behaved towards me.
ततोऽहमपि कौरव्य रोषव्याकुललोचनः ।
निश्चित्य मनसा राजन्वधायास्य मनो दधे ॥१७॥
17. tato'hamapi kauravya roṣavyākulalocanaḥ ,
niścitya manasā rājanvadhāyāsya mano dadhe.
17. tataḥ aham api kauravya roṣavyākulalocanaḥ
niścitya manasā rājan vadhāya asya manaḥ dadhe
17. Then, O scion of Kuru, O King, with my eyes agitated by anger, I too firmly resolved in my mind upon his destruction.
आनर्तेषु विमर्दं च क्षेपं चात्मनि कौरव ।
प्रवृद्धमवलेपं च तस्य दुष्कृतकर्मणः ॥१८॥
18. ānarteṣu vimardaṁ ca kṣepaṁ cātmani kaurava ,
pravṛddhamavalepaṁ ca tasya duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ.
18. ānarteṣu vimardam ca kṣepam ca ātmani kaurava
pravṛddham avalepam ca tasya duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ
18. O Kaurava, (I resolved upon his destruction considering) the devastation in the Anarta region, the insult to my own person (ātman), and the increased arrogance of that evildoer.
ततः सौभवधायाहं प्रतस्थे पृथिवीपते ।
स मया सागरावर्ते दृष्ट आसीत्परीप्सता ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ saubhavadhāyāhaṁ pratasthe pṛthivīpate ,
sa mayā sāgarāvarte dṛṣṭa āsītparīpsatā.
19. tataḥ saubhavadhāya aham pratasthe pṛthivīpate
sa mayā sāgarāvarte dṛṣṭaḥ āsīt parīpsatā
19. Then, O Lord of the Earth, I set out for the destruction of Saubha. He (Salva) was seen by me, while I was searching for him, in a whirlpool of the ocean.
ततः प्रध्माप्य जलजं पाञ्चजन्यमहं नृप ।
आहूय शाल्वं समरे युद्धाय समवस्थितः ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ pradhmāpya jalajaṁ pāñcajanyamahaṁ nṛpa ,
āhūya śālvaṁ samare yuddhāya samavasthitaḥ.
20. tataḥ pradhmāpya jalajam pāñcajanyam aham nṛpa
āhūya śālvam samare yuddhāya samavasthitaḥ
20. Then, O King, I, having loudly blown my conch, the Pāñcajanya, and having summoned Salva, stood prepared for battle in the encounter.
सुमुहूर्तमभूद्युद्धं तत्र मे दानवैः सह ।
वशीभूताश्च मे सर्वे भूतले च निपातिताः ॥२१॥
21. sumuhūrtamabhūdyuddhaṁ tatra me dānavaiḥ saha ,
vaśībhūtāśca me sarve bhūtale ca nipātitāḥ.
21. sumuhūrtam abhūt yuddham tatra me dānavaiḥ saha
vaśībhūtāḥ ca me sarve bhūtale ca nipātitāḥ
21. There, a battle occurred between me and the Dānavas for a very short time. All of them were brought under my control and struck down on the earth.
एतत्कार्यं महाबाहो येनाहं नागमं तदा ।
श्रुत्वैव हास्तिनपुरं द्यूतं चाविनयोत्थितम् ॥२२॥
22. etatkāryaṁ mahābāho yenāhaṁ nāgamaṁ tadā ,
śrutvaiva hāstinapuraṁ dyūtaṁ cāvinayotthitam.
22. etat kāryam mahābāho yena aham na āgamam tadā
śrutvā eva hāstinapuram dyūtam ca avinayotthitam
22. O mighty-armed one, this was the task due to which I did not come then, even after hearing about Hāstinapura and the gambling that arose from impropriety.
