वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तत आहूय पाञ्चाल्यो राजपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
परिग्रहेण ब्राह्मेण परिगृह्य महाद्युतिः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tata āhūya pāñcālyo rājaputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
parigraheṇa brāhmeṇa parigṛhya mahādyutiḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the highly effulgent (mahādyutiḥ) king of Pañcāla (pāñcālya), having called Prince Yudhiṣṭhira, accepted him according to a Brahmanical (brāhmeṇa) rite.
पर्यपृच्छददीनात्मा कुन्तीपुत्रं सुवर्चसम् ।
कथं जानीम भवतः क्षत्रियान्ब्राह्मणानुत ॥२॥
2. paryapṛcchadadīnātmā kuntīputraṁ suvarcasam ,
kathaṁ jānīma bhavataḥ kṣatriyānbrāhmaṇānuta.
2. paryapṛcchat adīnātmā kuntīputram suvarcasam
katham jānīmaḥ bhavataḥ kṣatriyān brāhmaṇān uta
2. The noble-minded (adīnātmā) Drupada asked the glorious son of Kunti (kuntīputram), Yudhiṣṭhira: 'How are we to know if you are Kṣatriyas or Brahmins?'
वैश्यान्वा गुणसंपन्नानुत वा शूद्रयोनिजान् ।
मायामास्थाय वा सिद्धांश्चरतः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥३॥
3. vaiśyānvā guṇasaṁpannānuta vā śūdrayonijān ,
māyāmāsthāya vā siddhāṁścarataḥ sarvatodiśam.
3. vaiśyān vā guṇasampannān uta vā śūdrayonijān
māyām āsthāya vā siddhān carataḥ sarvatodiśam
3. Or are you Vaiśyas, endowed with good qualities, or born of the Śūdra class, or perhaps perfected beings (siddhān) who move about everywhere, having resorted to illusion (māyā)?
कृष्णाहेतोरनुप्राप्तान्दिवः संदर्शनार्थिनः ।
ब्रवीतु नो भवान्सत्यं संदेहो ह्यत्र नो महान् ॥४॥
4. kṛṣṇāhetoranuprāptāndivaḥ saṁdarśanārthinaḥ ,
bravītu no bhavānsatyaṁ saṁdeho hyatra no mahān.
4. kṛṣṇāhetoḥ anuprāptān divaḥ saṃdarśanārthinaḥ
bravītu naḥ bhavān satyam sandehaḥ hi atra naḥ mahān
4. Please tell us the truth concerning those who have arrived from heaven for Kṛṣṇa's sake, desiring to see him, for we indeed have a great doubt about this matter.
अपि नः संशयस्यान्ते मनस्तुष्टिरिहाविशेत् ।
अपि नो भागधेयानि शुभानि स्युः परंतप ॥५॥
5. api naḥ saṁśayasyānte manastuṣṭirihāviśet ,
api no bhāgadheyāni śubhāni syuḥ paraṁtapa.
5. api naḥ saṃśayasya ante manaḥtuṣṭiḥ iha āviśet
api naḥ bhāgadheyāni śubhāni syuḥ paraṃtapa
5. O tormentor of foes, may contentment enter our minds after this doubt, and may our destinies be auspicious!
कामया ब्रूहि सत्यं त्वं सत्यं राजसु शोभते ।
इष्टापूर्तेन च तथा वक्तव्यमनृतं न तु ॥६॥
6. kāmayā brūhi satyaṁ tvaṁ satyaṁ rājasu śobhate ,
iṣṭāpūrtena ca tathā vaktavyamanṛtaṁ na tu.
6. kāmayā brūhi satyam tvam satyam rājasu śobhate
iṣṭāpūrtena ca tathā vaktavyam anṛtam na tu
6. You should speak the truth for your desire, for truth shines among kings. And similarly, by your sacrifices and charitable works (iṣṭāpūrta), truth should be spoken, not falsehood.
श्रुत्वा ह्यमरसंकाश तव वाक्यमरिंदम ।
ध्रुवं विवाहकरणमास्थास्यामि विधानतः ॥७॥
7. śrutvā hyamarasaṁkāśa tava vākyamariṁdama ,
dhruvaṁ vivāhakaraṇamāsthāsyāmi vidhānataḥ.
7. śrutvā hi amarasaṃkāśa tava vākyam ariṃdama
dhruvam vivāhakaraṇam āsthāsyāmi vidhānataḥ
7. Indeed, having heard your words, O you who resemble the immortals (amarasaṃkāśa), O tormentor of foes (ariṃdama), I shall certainly proceed with the marriage according to the proper rites.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
मा राजन्विमना भूस्त्वं पाञ्चाल्य प्रीतिरस्तु ते ।
ईप्सितस्ते ध्रुवः कामः संवृत्तोऽयमसंशयम् ॥८॥
8. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
mā rājanvimanā bhūstvaṁ pāñcālya prītirastu te ,
īpsitaste dhruvaḥ kāmaḥ saṁvṛtto'yamasaṁśayam.
8. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca mā rājan vimanaḥ bhūḥ tvam pāñcālya prītiḥ
astu te īpsitaḥ te dhruvaḥ kāmaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ ayam asaṃśayam
8. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O King, do not be disheartened, O Pāñcālya; let there be affection for you. Your desired wish has undoubtedly been fulfilled.
वयं हि क्षत्रिया राजन्पाण्डोः पुत्रा महात्मनः ।
ज्येष्ठं मां विद्धि कौन्तेयं भीमसेनार्जुनाविमौ ।
याभ्यां तव सुता राजन्निर्जिता राजसंसदि ॥९॥
9. vayaṁ hi kṣatriyā rājanpāṇḍoḥ putrā mahātmanaḥ ,
jyeṣṭhaṁ māṁ viddhi kaunteyaṁ bhīmasenārjunāvimau ,
yābhyāṁ tava sutā rājannirjitā rājasaṁsadi.
9. vayam hi kṣatriyāḥ rājan pāṇḍoḥ putrāḥ
mahātmanaḥ jyeṣṭham mām viddhi
kaunteyam bhīmasenārjunau imau yābhyām
tava sutāḥ rājan nirjitāḥ rājasamsadi
9. Indeed, O King, we are kṣatriyas, the sons of the great-souled Pāṇḍu. Recognize me as the eldest Kaunteya (son of Kuntī), and these two are Bhīmasena and Arjuna. It was by these two, O King, that your sons were vanquished in the royal assembly.
यमौ तु तत्र राजेन्द्र यत्र कृष्णा प्रतिष्ठिता ।
व्येतु ते मानसं दुःखं क्षत्रियाः स्मो नरर्षभ ।
पद्मिनीव सुतेयं ते ह्रदादन्यं ह्रदं गता ॥१०॥
10. yamau tu tatra rājendra yatra kṛṣṇā pratiṣṭhitā ,
vyetu te mānasaṁ duḥkhaṁ kṣatriyāḥ smo nararṣabha ,
padminīva suteyaṁ te hradādanyaṁ hradaṁ gatā.
10. yamau tu tatra rājendra yatra kṛṣṇā
pratiṣṭhitā vyetu te mānasam duḥkham
kṣatriyāḥ smaḥ nararṣabha padminī iva
sutā iyam te hradāt anyam hradam gatā
10. And the two twins are present where Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) has been established. Let your mental sorrow depart. We are kṣatriyas, O best of men. Your daughter, like a lotus flower (padminī), has moved from one pond to another.
इति तथ्यं महाराज सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ।
भवान्हि गुरुरस्माकं परमं च परायणम् ॥११॥
11. iti tathyaṁ mahārāja sarvametadbravīmi te ,
bhavānhi gururasmākaṁ paramaṁ ca parāyaṇam.
11. iti tathyam mahārāja sarvam etat bravīmi te
bhavān hi guruḥ asmākam paramam ca parāyaṇam
11. O great King, I speak all this truth to you. For you are indeed our teacher (guru) and our supreme refuge.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः स द्रुपदो राजा हर्षव्याकुललोचनः ।
प्रतिवक्तुं तदा युक्तं नाशकत्तं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१२॥
12. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ sa drupado rājā harṣavyākulalocanaḥ ,
prativaktuṁ tadā yuktaṁ nāśakattaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
12. vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ sa drupadaḥ rājā harṣavyākulalocanaḥ
prativaktum tadā yuktam na aśakat tam yudhiṣṭhiram
12. Vaiśampāyana said: Then King Drupada, whose eyes were agitated with joy, was unable at that moment to give a suitable reply to Yudhishthira.
यत्नेन तु स तं हर्षं संनिगृह्य परंतपः ।
अनुरूपं ततो राजा प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१३॥
13. yatnena tu sa taṁ harṣaṁ saṁnigṛhya paraṁtapaḥ ,
anurūpaṁ tato rājā pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram.
13. yatnena tu sa tam harṣam samnigrhya paramtapaḥ
anurūpam tataḥ rājā pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram
13. But that oppressor of foes (paraṃtapa), controlling his joy with effort, the king then replied appropriately to Yudhishthira.
पप्रच्छ चैनं धर्मात्मा यथा ते प्रद्रुताः पुरा ।
स तस्मै सर्वमाचख्यावानुपूर्व्येण पाण्डवः ॥१४॥
14. papraccha cainaṁ dharmātmā yathā te pradrutāḥ purā ,
sa tasmai sarvamācakhyāvānupūrvyeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ.
14. papraccha ca enam dharmātmā yathā te pradrutāḥ purā
saḥ tasmai sarvam ācakhyau ānupūrvyeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ
14. The righteous king (Drupada) also asked him (Yudhiṣṭhira) how they (the Pāṇḍavas) had previously fled. Then, that son of Pāṇḍu (Yudhiṣṭhira) narrated everything to him in proper sequence.
तच्छ्रुत्वा द्रुपदो राजा कुन्तीपुत्रस्य भाषितम् ।
विगर्हयामास तदा धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् ॥१५॥
15. tacchrutvā drupado rājā kuntīputrasya bhāṣitam ,
vigarhayāmāsa tadā dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ janeśvaram.
15. tat śrutvā drupadaḥ rājā kuntīputrasya bhāṣitam
vigarhayāmāsa tadā dhṛtarāṣṭram janeśvaram
15. Hearing those words of Kuntī's son (Yudhiṣṭhira), King Drupada then condemned Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the ruler of men.
आश्वासयामास च तं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
प्रतिजज्ञे च राज्याय द्रुपदो वदतां वरः ॥१६॥
16. āśvāsayāmāsa ca taṁ kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
pratijajñe ca rājyāya drupado vadatāṁ varaḥ.
16. āśvāsayāmāsa ca tam kuntīputram yudhiṣṭhiram
pratijajñe ca rājyāya drupadaḥ vadatām varaḥ
16. And he (Drupada) comforted that son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira. Drupada, the foremost among speakers, also pledged him (Yudhiṣṭhira) for kingship.
ततः कुन्ती च कृष्णा च भीमसेनार्जुनावपि ।
यमौ च राज्ञा संदिष्टौ विविशुर्भवनं महत् ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ kuntī ca kṛṣṇā ca bhīmasenārjunāvapi ,
yamau ca rājñā saṁdiṣṭau viviśurbhavanaṁ mahat.
17. tataḥ kuntī ca kṛṣṇā ca bhīmasenārjunau api
yamau ca rājñā saṃdiṣṭau viviśuḥ bhavanam mahat
17. Then Kuntī, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), Bhīmasena, and Arjuna, along with the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), who had been instructed by the king, entered a magnificent palace.
तत्र ते न्यवसन्राजन्यज्ञसेनेन पूजिताः ।
प्रत्याश्वस्तांस्ततो राजा सह पुत्रैरुवाच तान् ॥१८॥
18. tatra te nyavasanrājanyajñasenena pūjitāḥ ,
pratyāśvastāṁstato rājā saha putrairuvāca tān.
18. tatra te nyavasan rājan yajñasenena pūjitāḥ |
pratyāśvastān tataḥ rājā saha putraiḥ uvāca tān
18. rājan tatra te yajñasenena pūjitāḥ nyavasan
tataḥ rājā pratyāśvastān saha putraiḥ tān uvāca
18. There, O King, they resided, honored by Yajñasena (Drupada). Then the king, reassured, spoke to them along with his sons.
गृह्णातु विधिवत्पाणिमद्यैव कुरुनन्दनः ।
पुण्येऽहनि महाबाहुरर्जुनः कुरुतां क्षणम् ॥१९॥
19. gṛhṇātu vidhivatpāṇimadyaiva kurunandanaḥ ,
puṇye'hani mahābāhurarjunaḥ kurutāṁ kṣaṇam.
19. gṛhṇātu vidhivat pāṇim adya eva kurunandanaḥ
puṇye ahani mahābāhuḥ arjunaḥ kurutām kṣaṇam
19. Let Arjuna, the delight of the Kurus and the mighty-armed one, take her hand according to sacred rites this very day. Let him perform the auspicious ceremony on this blessed day.
ततस्तमब्रवीद्राजा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
ममापि दारसंबन्धः कार्यस्तावद्विशां पते ॥२०॥
20. tatastamabravīdrājā dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
mamāpi dārasaṁbandhaḥ kāryastāvadviśāṁ pate.
20. tataḥ tam abravīt rājā dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
mama api dārasambandhaḥ kāryaḥ tāvat viśām pate
20. Thereupon, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (dharma), said to him: 'O lord of men, my marriage alliance also needs to be concluded for now.'
द्रुपद उवाच ।
भवान्वा विधिवत्पाणिं गृह्णातु दुहितुर्मम ।
यस्य वा मन्यसे वीर तस्य कृष्णामुपादिश ॥२१॥
21. drupada uvāca ,
bhavānvā vidhivatpāṇiṁ gṛhṇātu duhiturmama ,
yasya vā manyase vīra tasya kṛṣṇāmupādiśa.
21. drupadaḥ uvāca bhavān vā vidhivat pāṇim gṛhṇātu
duhituḥ mama yasya vā manyase vīra tasya kṛṣṇām upādiśa
21. Drupada said: 'Either let Your Majesty take my daughter's hand according to sacred rites, or, O hero, assign Kṛṣṇā to whomever you deem fit.'
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
सर्वेषां द्रौपदी राजन्महिषी नो भविष्यति ।
एवं हि व्याहृतं पूर्वं मम मात्रा विशां पते ॥२२॥
22. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
sarveṣāṁ draupadī rājanmahiṣī no bhaviṣyati ,
evaṁ hi vyāhṛtaṁ pūrvaṁ mama mātrā viśāṁ pate.
22. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca sarveṣām draupadī rājan mahiṣī naḥ
bhaviṣyati evam hi vyāhṛtam pūrvam mama mātrā viśām pate
22. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O king, Draupadī will be the principal wife for all of us. Indeed, O lord of men, my mother (mātṛ) previously declared this.'
अहं चाप्यनिविष्टो वै भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ।
पार्थेन विजिता चैषा रत्नभूता च ते सुता ॥२३॥
23. ahaṁ cāpyaniviṣṭo vai bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
pārthena vijitā caiṣā ratnabhūtā ca te sutā.
23. aham ca api aniviṣṭaḥ vai bhīmasenaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ
pārthena vijitā ca eṣā ratnabhūtā ca te sutā
23. And indeed, I, the Pāṇḍava, am still unmarried, as is Bhīmasena. Moreover, this daughter of yours, who is like a precious gem, was won by Pārtha (Arjuna).
एष नः समयो राजन्रत्नस्य सहभोजनम् ।
न च तं हातुमिच्छामः समयं राजसत्तम ॥२४॥
24. eṣa naḥ samayo rājanratnasya sahabhojanam ,
na ca taṁ hātumicchāmaḥ samayaṁ rājasattama.
24. eṣaḥ naḥ samayaḥ rājan ratnasya sahabhojanam
na ca tam hātum icchāmaḥ samayam rājasattama
24. This is our agreement, O King, concerning the joint enjoyment of the jewel. And we do not wish to abandon that agreement, O best of kings.
सर्वेषां धर्मतः कृष्णा महिषी नो भविष्यति ।
आनुपूर्व्येण सर्वेषां गृह्णातु ज्वलने करम् ॥२५॥
25. sarveṣāṁ dharmataḥ kṛṣṇā mahiṣī no bhaviṣyati ,
ānupūrvyeṇa sarveṣāṁ gṛhṇātu jvalane karam.
25. sarveṣām dharmataḥ kṛṣṇā mahiṣī naḥ bhaviṣyati
ānupūrvyena sarveṣām gṛhṇātu jvalane karam
25. Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) will be our queen for all of us, by (natural) law (dharma). Let her take the hand of all of us in the fire, in due order.
द्रुपद उवाच ।
एकस्य बह्व्यो विहिता महिष्यः कुरुनन्दन ।
नैकस्या बहवः पुंसो विधीयन्ते कदाचन ॥२६॥
26. drupada uvāca ,
ekasya bahvyo vihitā mahiṣyaḥ kurunandana ,
naikasyā bahavaḥ puṁso vidhīyante kadācana.
26. drupadaḥ uvāca ekasya bahvyaḥ vihitāḥ mahiṣyaḥ
kurunandana na ekasyāḥ bahavaḥ puṃsaḥ vidhīyante kadācana
26. Drupada said: "O delight of the Kurus, many queens are ordained for one man. But never are many husbands prescribed for one woman."
लोकवेदविरुद्धं त्वं नाधर्मं धार्मिकः शुचिः ।
कर्तुमर्हसि कौन्तेय कस्मात्ते बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥२७॥
27. lokavedaviruddhaṁ tvaṁ nādharmaṁ dhārmikaḥ śuciḥ ,
kartumarhasi kaunteya kasmātte buddhirīdṛśī.
27. loka-veda-viruddham tvam na adhārmam dhārmikaḥ
śuciḥ kartum arhasi kaunteya kasmāt te buddhiḥ īdṛśī
27. O son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), being righteous (dhārmika) and pure, you should not do what is contrary to the world and the Vedas, which is not (natural) law (dharma). Why is your intellect like this?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
सूक्ष्मो धर्मो महाराज नास्य विद्मो वयं गतिम् ।
पूर्वेषामानुपूर्व्येण यातं वर्त्मानुयामहे ॥२८॥
28. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
sūkṣmo dharmo mahārāja nāsya vidmo vayaṁ gatim ,
pūrveṣāmānupūrvyeṇa yātaṁ vartmānuyāmahe.
28. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca sūkṣmaḥ dharmaḥ mahārāja na asya vidmaḥ
vayam gatim pūrveṣām ānupūrvyena yātam vartma anuyāmahe
28. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O great king, (natural) law (dharma) is subtle; we do not know its path. Therefore, we follow the path trodden by our ancestors, in due order."
न मे वागनृतं प्राह नाधर्मे धीयते मतिः ।
एवं चैव वदत्यम्बा मम चैव मनोगतम् ॥२९॥
29. na me vāganṛtaṁ prāha nādharme dhīyate matiḥ ,
evaṁ caiva vadatyambā mama caiva manogatam.
29. na me vāk anṛtam prāha na adharme dhīyate matiḥ
| evam ca eva vadati ambā mama ca eva manogatam
29. My speech never utters falsehood, nor is my mind inclined towards unrighteousness. And indeed, my mother speaks exactly what is in my mind.
एष धर्मो ध्रुवो राजंश्चरैनमविचारयन् ।
मा च तेऽत्र विशङ्का भूत्कथंचिदपि पार्थिव ॥३०॥
30. eṣa dharmo dhruvo rājaṁścarainamavicārayan ,
mā ca te'tra viśaṅkā bhūtkathaṁcidapi pārthiva.
30. eṣaḥ dharmaḥ dhruvaḥ rājan cara enam avicārayan |
mā ca te atra viśaṅkā bhūt kathaṃcit api pārthiva
30. O king, this natural law (dharma) is eternal; observe it without deliberation. And let no doubt (viśaṅkā) whatsoever arise in you here, O earthly ruler.
द्रुपद उवाच ।
त्वं च कुन्ती च कौन्तेय धृष्टद्युम्नश्च मे सुतः ।
कथयन्त्वितिकर्तव्यं श्वः काले करवामहे ॥३१॥
31. drupada uvāca ,
tvaṁ ca kuntī ca kaunteya dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca me sutaḥ ,
kathayantvitikartavyaṁ śvaḥ kāle karavāmahe.
31. drupada uvāca | tvam ca kuntī ca kaunteya dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca
me sutaḥ | kathayantu iti kartavyam śvaḥ kāle karavāmahe
31. Drupada said, "You, Kuntī, O son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), and my son Dhṛṣṭadyumna, should all declare what is to be done (itikartavyam). Tomorrow, at the proper time, we will carry it out."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ते समेत्य ततः सर्वे कथयन्ति स्म भारत ।
अथ द्वैपायनो राजन्नभ्यागच्छद्यदृच्छया ॥३२॥
32. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te sametya tataḥ sarve kathayanti sma bhārata ,
atha dvaipāyano rājannabhyāgacchadyadṛcchayā.
32. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | te sametya tataḥ sarve kathayanti sma
bhārata | atha dvaipāyanaḥ rājan abhyāgacchat yadṛcchayā
32. Vaiśaṃpāyana said, "Then all of them, having gathered, were discussing, O descendant of Bharata (Janamejaya). And then, O king, Dvaiśapāyana arrived by chance."
