वैशंपायन उवाच ।
कृतोदकं तु राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं युधिष्ठिरः ।
पुरस्कृत्य महाबाहुरुत्तताराकुलेन्द्रियः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
kṛtodakaṁ tu rājānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
puraskṛtya mahābāhuruttatārākulendriyaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: The mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Yudhiṣṭhira, with agitated senses (ākulendriya), having performed the water ritual and respectfully leading King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, then ascended (from the river).
उत्तीर्य च महीपालो बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः ।
पपात तीरे गङ्गाया व्याधविद्ध इव द्विपः ॥२॥
2. uttīrya ca mahīpālo bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ ,
papāta tīre gaṅgāyā vyādhaviddha iva dvipaḥ.

2. And having emerged (from the water), the protector of the earth (mahīpāla), his eyes distressed by tears, fell on the bank of the Gaṅgā, like an elephant (dvipa) wounded by a hunter.
तं सीदमानं जग्राह भीमः कृष्णेन चोदितः ।
मैवमित्यब्रवीच्चैनं कृष्णः परबलार्दनः ॥३॥
3. taṁ sīdamānaṁ jagrāha bhīmaḥ kṛṣṇena coditaḥ ,
maivamityabravīccainaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ parabalārdanaḥ.
3. tam sīdamānam jagrāha bhīmaḥ kṛṣṇena coditaḥ mā
evam iti abravīt ca enam kṛṣṇaḥ parabalārdanaḥ

3. Bhīma, urged by Kṛṣṇa (kṛṣṇa), caught him (Yudhiṣṭhira) as he was collapsing. And Kṛṣṇa (kṛṣṇa), the destroyer of enemy forces, said to him, 'Do not (act) thus!'
तमार्तं पतितं भूमौ निश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः ।
ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥४॥
4. tamārtaṁ patitaṁ bhūmau niśvasantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ,
dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavā rājandharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
4. tam ārtam patitam bhūmau niśvasantam punaḥ punaḥ
dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ rājan dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram
4. rājan pāṇḍavāḥ dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram ārtam
patitam bhūmau punaḥ punaḥ niśvasantam tam dadṛśuḥ
4. O king, the Pāṇḍavas saw him, Yudhiṣṭhira, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, fallen on the ground, distressed, and sighing again and again.
तं दृष्ट्वा दीनमनसं गतसत्त्वं जनेश्वरम् ।
भूयः शोकसमाविष्टाः पाण्डवाः समुपाविशन् ॥५॥
5. taṁ dṛṣṭvā dīnamanasaṁ gatasattvaṁ janeśvaram ,
bhūyaḥ śokasamāviṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan.
5. tam dṛṣṭvā dīnāmanasam gatasattvam janeśvaram
bhūyaḥ śokasāmāviṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan
5. pāṇḍavāḥ dīnāmanasam gatasattvam janeśvaram
tam dṛṣṭvā bhūyaḥ śokasāmāviṣṭāḥ samupāviśan
5. Having seen him, the lord of men (Yudhiṣṭhira), disheartened and devoid of vigor, the Pāṇḍavas, overcome by even greater grief, sat down.
राजा च धृतराष्ट्रस्तमुपासीनो महाभुजः ।
वाक्यमाह महाप्राज्ञो महाशोकप्रपीडितम् ॥६॥
6. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭrastamupāsīno mahābhujaḥ ,
vākyamāha mahāprājño mahāśokaprapīḍitam.
6. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tam upāsīnaḥ mahābhujaḥ
vākyam āha mahāprājñaḥ mahāśokaprapīḍitam
6. ca rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahābhujaḥ mahāprājñaḥ
mahāśokaprapīḍitam tam upāsīnaḥ vākyam āha
6. And King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the great-armed, greatly wise one, sitting near him (Yudhiṣṭhira), who was greatly afflicted by grief, spoke these words.
उत्तिष्ठ कुरुशार्दूल कुरु कार्यमनन्तरम् ।
क्षत्रधर्मेण कौरव्य जितेयमवनिस्त्वया ॥७॥
7. uttiṣṭha kuruśārdūla kuru kāryamanantaram ,
kṣatradharmeṇa kauravya jiteyamavanistvayā.

kṣatradharmeṇa kauravya jitā iyam avaniḥ tvayā
7. kuruśārdūla kauravya uttiṣṭha anantaram kāryam
kuru kṣatradharmeṇa iyam avaniḥ tvayā jitā
7. Rise up, O tiger among the Kurus (kuruśārdūla)! Perform your next duty immediately. O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), this earth has been conquered by you, in accordance with the warrior's natural law (kṣatradharma).
तां भुङ्क्ष्व भ्रातृभिः सार्धं सुहृद्भिश्च जनेश्वर ।
न शोचितव्यं पश्यामि त्वया धर्मभृतां वर ॥८॥
8. tāṁ bhuṅkṣva bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ suhṛdbhiśca janeśvara ,
na śocitavyaṁ paśyāmi tvayā dharmabhṛtāṁ vara.
8. tām bhuṅkṣva bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham suhṛdbhiḥ ca janeśvara
na śocitavyam paśyāmi tvayā dharmabhṛtām vara
8. O lord of men, best among those who uphold natural law (dharma), enjoy this [earth/kingdom] with your brothers and friends. I see nothing for you to grieve over.
शोचितव्यं मया चैव गान्धार्या च विशां पते ।
पुत्रैर्विहीनो राज्येन स्वप्नलब्धधनो यथा ॥९॥
9. śocitavyaṁ mayā caiva gāndhāryā ca viśāṁ pate ,
putrairvihīno rājyena svapnalabdhadhano yathā.
9. śocitavyam mayā ca eva gāndhāryā ca viśām pate
putraiḥ vihīnaḥ rājyena svapnalabdhadhanaḥ yathā
9. O lord of subjects, I and Gandhari certainly have reason to grieve. [I am now] deprived of sons and kingdom, like one who has obtained wealth in a dream.
अश्रुत्वा हितकामस्य विदुरस्य महात्मनः ।
वाक्यानि सुमहार्थानि परितप्यामि दुर्मतिः ॥१०॥
10. aśrutvā hitakāmasya vidurasya mahātmanaḥ ,
vākyāni sumahārthāni paritapyāmi durmatiḥ.
10. aśrutvā hitakāmasya vidurasya mahātmanaḥ
vākyāni sumahārthāni paritapyāmi durmatiḥ
10. Having not listened to the very profound words of the great-souled Vidura, who was my well-wisher, I, being foolish, now deeply regret [it].
उक्तवानेष मां पूर्वं धर्मात्मा दिव्यदर्शनः ।
दुर्योधनापराधेन कुलं ते विनशिष्यति ॥११॥
11. uktavāneṣa māṁ pūrvaṁ dharmātmā divyadarśanaḥ ,
duryodhanāparādhena kulaṁ te vinaśiṣyati.
11. uktavān eṣaḥ mām pūrvam dharmātmā divyadarśanaḥ
duryodhanāparādhena kulam te vinaśiṣyati
11. That righteous-souled (dharmātman) and divinely-sighted [Vidura] spoke to me previously: 'Your lineage will be destroyed due to Duryodhana's offense.'
स्वस्ति चेदिच्छसे राजन्कुलस्यात्मन एव च ।
वध्यतामेष दुष्टात्मा मन्दो राजा सुयोधनः ॥१२॥
12. svasti cedicchase rājankulasyātmana eva ca ,
vadhyatāmeṣa duṣṭātmā mando rājā suyodhanaḥ.
12. svasti cet icchase rājan kulasya ātmanaḥ eva ca
vadhyatām eṣa duṣṭa-ātmā mandaḥ rājā suyodhanaḥ
12. O King, if you desire welfare for your family and for yourself (ātman), then this evil-minded, foolish King Suyodhana should be killed.
कर्णश्च शकुनिश्चैव मैनं पश्यतु कर्हिचित् ।
द्यूतसंपातमप्येषामप्रमत्तो निवारय ॥१३॥
13. karṇaśca śakuniścaiva mainaṁ paśyatu karhicit ,
dyūtasaṁpātamapyeṣāmapramatto nivāraya.
13. karṇaḥ ca śakuniḥ ca eva mā enam paśyatu karhicit
dyūta-saṃpātam api eṣām apramattaḥ nivāraya
13. Let Karna and Shakuni never see him. You should diligently prevent even their gambling assemblies.
अभिषेचय राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
स पालयिष्यति वशी धर्मेण पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१४॥
14. abhiṣecaya rājānaṁ dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
sa pālayiṣyati vaśī dharmeṇa pṛthivīmimām.
14. abhiṣecaya rājānam dharma-ātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram
sa pālayiṣyati vaśī dharmeṇa pṛthivīm imām
14. Anoint the righteous (dharma-ātman) Yudhishthira as king. Being self-controlled, he will protect this earth in accordance with natural law (dharma).
अथ नेच्छसि राजानं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
मेढीभूतः स्वयं राज्यं प्रतिगृह्णीष्व पार्थिव ॥१५॥
15. atha necchasi rājānaṁ kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
meḍhībhūtaḥ svayaṁ rājyaṁ pratigṛhṇīṣva pārthiva.
15. atha na icchasi rājānam kuntī-putram yudhiṣṭhiram
meḍhī-bhūtaḥ svayam rājyam pratigṛhṇīṣva pārthiva
15. But if you do not desire Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, as king, then, O ruler (pārthiva), you yourself become the central support and accept the kingdom.
समं सर्वेषु भूतेषु वर्तमानं नराधिप ।
अनुजीवन्तु सर्वे त्वां ज्ञातयो ज्ञातिवर्धन ॥१६॥
16. samaṁ sarveṣu bhūteṣu vartamānaṁ narādhipa ,
anujīvantu sarve tvāṁ jñātayo jñātivardhana.
16. samam sarveṣu bhūteṣu vartamānam narādhipa
anujīvantu sarve tvām jñātayaḥ jñātivardhana
16. O ruler of men (narādhipa), O enhancer of kinsmen, may all your relatives thrive under your support, as you are present equally among all beings.
एवं ब्रुवति कौन्तेय विदुरे दीर्घदर्शिनि ।
दुर्योधनमहं पापमन्ववर्तं वृथामतिः ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ bruvati kaunteya vidure dīrghadarśini ,
duryodhanamahaṁ pāpamanvavartaṁ vṛthāmatiḥ.
17. evam bruvati kaunteya vidure dīrghadarśini
duryodhanam aham pāpam anvavartam vṛthāmatiḥ
17. O son of Kuntī (kaunteya), while the far-sighted Vidura spoke thus, I, with a foolish mind, followed the wicked Duryodhana.
अश्रुत्वा ह्यस्य वीरस्य वाक्यानि मधुराण्यहम् ।
फलं प्राप्य महद्दुःखं निमग्नः शोकसागरे ॥१८॥
18. aśrutvā hyasya vīrasya vākyāni madhurāṇyaham ,
phalaṁ prāpya mahadduḥkhaṁ nimagnaḥ śokasāgare.
18. aśrutvā hi asya vīrasya vākyāni madhurāṇi aham
phalam prāpya mahat duḥkham nimagnaḥ śokasāgare
18. Indeed, without listening to the sweet words of this hero, I obtained the fruit of great sorrow and became submerged in the ocean of grief.
वृद्धौ हि ते स्वः पितरौ पश्यावां दुःखितौ नृप ।
न शोचितव्यं भवता पश्यामीह जनाधिप ॥१९॥
19. vṛddhau hi te svaḥ pitarau paśyāvāṁ duḥkhitau nṛpa ,
na śocitavyaṁ bhavatā paśyāmīha janādhipa.
19. vṛddhau hi te svaḥ pitarau paśyāvaḥ duḥkhitau
nṛpa na śocitavyam bhavatā paśyāmi iha janādhipa
19. Indeed, O king (nṛpa), your own two parents are old; we both see them distressed. You should not grieve, O lord of people (janādhipa), for I perceive no cause for it here.
