समुद्यतोऽयं भारो मे सुमहान्सागरोपमः ।
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य संग्रामे वर्षपूगाभिचिन्तितः ॥१॥

samudyato'yaṁ bhāro me sumahānsāgaropamaḥ ,

1. Bhīṣma said: 'This immense, ocean-like burden of mine, undertaken for Dhṛtarāṣṭra in this war, has been contemplated for many years.'
तस्मिन्नभ्यागते काले प्रतप्ते लोमहर्षणे ।
मिथोभेदो न मे कार्यस्तेन जीवसि सूतज ॥२॥
2. tasminnabhyāgate kāle pratapte lomaharṣaṇe ,
mithobhedo na me kāryastena jīvasi sūtaja.
2. tasmin abhyāgate kāle pratapte lomaharṣaṇe |
mithaḥ-bhedaḥ na me kāryaḥ tena jīvasi sūtaja
2. sūtaja tasmin pratapte lomaharṣaṇe kāle

2. Now that this terrible, hair-raising time of war has arrived, I must not cause internal dissension. For this reason, O son of a charioteer, you remain alive.
न ह्यहं नाद्य विक्रम्य स्थविरोऽपि शिशोस्तव ।
युद्धश्रद्धां रणे छिन्द्यां जीवितस्य च सूतज ॥३॥
3. na hyahaṁ nādya vikramya sthaviro'pi śiśostava ,
yuddhaśraddhāṁ raṇe chindyāṁ jīvitasya ca sūtaja.
3. na hi aham na adya vikramya sthaviraḥ api śiśoḥ tava
| yuddhaśraddhām raṇe chindyām jīvitasya ca sūtaja
3. sūtaja hi aham sthaviraḥ api tava śiśoḥ na adya
vikramya raṇe yuddhaśraddhām ca jīvitasya chindyām
3. Indeed, O son of a charioteer, I, though old, will not today, *by not exerting my prowess* against you who are but a youth, destroy your enthusiasm (śraddhā) for battle or your life in this conflict.
जामदग्न्येन रामेण महास्त्राणि प्रमुञ्चता ।
न मे व्यथाभवत्काचित्त्वं तु मे किं करिष्यसि ॥४॥
4. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa mahāstrāṇi pramuñcatā ,
na me vyathābhavatkācittvaṁ tu me kiṁ kariṣyasi.

vyathā abhavat kācit tvam tu me kim kariṣyasi

4. When Paraśurāma, son of Jamadagni, was releasing his great weapons, I did not feel any pain. What, then, will you be able to do to me?
कामं नैतत्प्रशंसन्ति सन्तोऽऽत्मबलसंस्तवम् ।
वक्ष्यामि तु त्वां संतप्तो निहीन कुलपांसन ॥५॥
5. kāmaṁ naitatpraśaṁsanti santo''tmabalasaṁstavam ,
vakṣyāmi tu tvāṁ saṁtapto nihīna kulapāṁsana.
5. kāmam na etat praśaṃsanti santaḥ ātma-bala-saṃstavam
vakṣyāmi tu tvām santaptaḥ nihīna kula-pāṃsana
5. kāmam santaḥ etat ātma-bala-saṃstavam na praśaṃsanti
tu santaptaḥ nihīna kula-pāṃsana tvām vakṣyāmi
5. Indeed, righteous persons do not praise this boasting of one's own self (ātman)'s strength. But, agitated as I am, I will speak to you, you degraded disgracer of your family.
समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं काशिराज्ञः स्वयंवरे ।
निर्जित्यैकरथेनैव यत्कन्यास्तरसा हृताः ॥६॥
6. sametaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ kāśirājñaḥ svayaṁvare ,
nirjityaikarathenaiva yatkanyāstarasā hṛtāḥ.
6. sametam pārthivam kṣatram kāśirājñaḥ svayaṃvare
nirjitya eka-rathena eva yat kanyāḥ tarasā hṛtāḥ
6. kāśirājñaḥ svayaṃvare sametam pārthivam kṣatram
eka-rathena eva nirjitya yat kanyāḥ tarasā hṛtāḥ
6. At the self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara) of the king of Kāśi, having conquered the assembled royal kṣatriyas with just a single chariot, (whose) daughters were then forcefully carried away.
ईदृशानां सहस्राणि विशिष्टानामथो पुनः ।
मयैकेन निरस्तानि ससैन्यानि रणाजिरे ॥७॥
7. īdṛśānāṁ sahasrāṇi viśiṣṭānāmatho punaḥ ,
mayaikena nirastāni sasainyāni raṇājire.
7. īdṛśānām sahasrāṇi viśiṣṭānām atho punaḥ
mayā ekena nirastāni sa-sainyāni raṇājire
7. īdṛśānām viśiṣṭānām atho punaḥ sahasrāṇi
sa-sainyāni raṇājire mayā ekena nirastāni
7. Thousands of such (warriors), and moreover, even distinguished ones, along with their armies, have been cast aside by me alone in the battlefield.
त्वां प्राप्य वैरपुरुषं कुरूणामनयो महान् ।
उपस्थितो विनाशाय यतस्व पुरुषो भव ॥८॥
8. tvāṁ prāpya vairapuruṣaṁ kurūṇāmanayo mahān ,
upasthito vināśāya yatasva puruṣo bhava.
8. tvām prāpya vairapuruṣam kurūṇām anayaḥ mahān
upasthitaḥ vināśāya yatasva puruṣaḥ bhava
8. tvām vairapuruṣam prāpya kurūṇām mahān anayaḥ vināśāya upasthitaḥ.
yatasva puruṣaḥ bhava.
8. You, having become the hostile person (vairapuruṣa), have caused a great impropriety (anaya) to arise among the Kurus, which is leading to their destruction. Therefore, strive and be a (true) man (puruṣa).
युध्यस्व पार्थं समरे येन विस्पर्धसे सह ।
द्रक्ष्यामि त्वां विनिर्मुक्तमस्माद्युद्धात्सुदुर्मते ॥९॥
9. yudhyasva pārthaṁ samare yena vispardhase saha ,
drakṣyāmi tvāṁ vinirmuktamasmādyuddhātsudurmate.
9. yudhyasva pārtham samare yena vispardhase saha
drakṣyāmi tvām vinirmuktam asmāt yuddhāt sudurmate
9. sudurmate,
yena saha pārtham samare vispardhase,
yudhyasva.
tvām asmāt yuddhāt vinirmuktam drakṣyāmi.
9. Fight against Partha (Arjuna) in battle, with whom you contend. O very evil-minded one, I will see you freed from this battle.
संजय उवाच ।
तमुवाच ततो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो महामनाः ।
मामवेक्षस्व गाङ्गेय कार्यं हि महदुद्यतम् ॥१०॥
10. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tamuvāca tato rājā dhārtarāṣṭro mahāmanāḥ ,
māmavekṣasva gāṅgeya kāryaṁ hi mahadudyatam.
10. sañjayaḥ uvāca tam uvāca tataḥ rājā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ
mahāmanāḥ mām avekṣasva gāṅgeya kāryam hi mahat udyatam
10. sañjayaḥ uvāca.
tataḥ rājā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ mahāmanāḥ tam uvāca: "gāṅgeya,
mām avekṣasva,
hi mahat kāryam udyatam.
"
10. Sanjaya said: Then King Dhārtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), the great-minded one, said to him: 'O Gāṅgeya (son of Gaṅgā), consider me, for a great task has indeed arisen.'
चिन्त्यतामिदमेवाग्रे मम निःश्रेयसं परम् ।
उभावपि भवन्तौ मे महत्कर्म करिष्यतः ॥११॥
11. cintyatāmidamevāgre mama niḥśreyasaṁ param ,
ubhāvapi bhavantau me mahatkarma kariṣyataḥ.
11. cintyatām idam eva agre mama niḥśreyasam param
ubhau api bhavantau me mahat karma kariṣyataḥ
11. agre mama param niḥśreyasam idam eva cintyatām.
ubhau api bhavantau me mahat karma kariṣyataḥ.
11. Let this supreme welfare (niḥśreyasa) of mine be considered first. Indeed, both of you will perform a great deed for me.
भूयश्च श्रोतुमिच्छामि परेषां रथसत्तमान् ।
ये चैवातिरथास्तत्र तथैव रथयूथपाः ॥१२॥
12. bhūyaśca śrotumicchāmi pareṣāṁ rathasattamān ,
ye caivātirathāstatra tathaiva rathayūthapāḥ.
12. bhūyaḥ ca śrotum icchāmi pareṣām rathasattamān ye
ca eva atirathāḥ tatra tathā eva rathayūthapāḥ
12. ca bhūyaḥ pareṣām rathasattamān ye ca eva tatra
atirathāḥ tathā eva rathayūthapāḥ śrotum icchāmi
12. And I also wish to hear further about the foremost charioteers among the enemies, as well as those who are great charioteers (atirathāḥ) there, and similarly, the commanders of chariot divisions.
बलाबलममित्राणां श्रोतुमिच्छामि कौरव ।
प्रभातायां रजन्यां वै इदं युद्धं भविष्यति ॥१३॥
13. balābalamamitrāṇāṁ śrotumicchāmi kaurava ,
prabhātāyāṁ rajanyāṁ vai idaṁ yuddhaṁ bhaviṣyati.
13. balābalam amitrāṇām śrotum icchāmi kaurava
prabhātāyām rajanyām vai idam yuddham bhaviṣyati
13. kaurava amitrāṇām balābalam śrotum icchāmi vai
rajanyām prabhātāyām idam yuddham bhaviṣyati
13. O Kaurava, I wish to hear about the strengths and weaknesses of the enemies. This battle will certainly take place when morning breaks.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एते रथास्ते संख्यातास्तथैवातिरथा नृप ।
ये चाप्यर्धरथा राजन्पाण्डवानामतः शृणु ॥१४॥
14. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ete rathāste saṁkhyātāstathaivātirathā nṛpa ,
ye cāpyardharathā rājanpāṇḍavānāmataḥ śṛṇu.
14. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca ete rathāḥ te saṃkhyātāḥ tathā eva atirathāḥ
nṛpa ye ca api ardharathāḥ rājan pāṇḍavānām ataḥ śṛṇu
14. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca nṛpa te ete rathāḥ tathā eva atirathāḥ
saṃkhyātāḥ rājan ataḥ pāṇḍavānām ye ca api ardharathāḥ śṛṇu
14. Bhishma said: 'O King (nṛpa), these charioteers and also the great charioteers (atirathāḥ) have been enumerated to you. Now, O King (rājan), listen to those who are half-charioteers (ardharathāḥ) among the Pandavas.'
यदि कौतूहलं तेऽद्य पाण्डवानां बले नृप ।
रथसंख्यां महाबाहो सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥१५॥
15. yadi kautūhalaṁ te'dya pāṇḍavānāṁ bale nṛpa ,
rathasaṁkhyāṁ mahābāho sahaibhirvasudhādhipaiḥ.
15. yadi kautūhalam te adya pāṇḍavānām bale nṛpa
rathasaṃkhyām mahābāho saha ebhiḥ vasudhādhipaiḥ
15. nṛpa yadi adya te pāṇḍavānām bale kautūhalam
mahābāho ebhiḥ vasudhādhipaiḥ saha rathasaṃkhyām
15. O King (nṛpa), if you now have curiosity about the strength (bale) of the Pandavas, then, O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), listen to the enumeration of charioteers, along with these kings.
स्वयं राजा रथोदारः पाण्डवः कुन्तिनन्दनः ।
अग्निवत्समरे तात चरिष्यति न संशयः ॥१६॥
16. svayaṁ rājā rathodāraḥ pāṇḍavaḥ kuntinandanaḥ ,
agnivatsamare tāta cariṣyati na saṁśayaḥ.
16. svayam rājā rathodāraḥ pāṇḍavaḥ kuntinandanaḥ
agnivat samare tāta cariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
16. tāta svayam rājā kuntinandanaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ
rathodāraḥ samare agnivat cariṣyati saṃśayaḥ na
16. O dear father, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti, who is a magnificent charioteer, will certainly act like fire in battle; there is no doubt about it.
भीमसेनस्तु राजेन्द्र रथोऽष्टगुणसंमितः ।
नागायुतबलो मानी तेजसा न स मानुषः ॥१७॥
17. bhīmasenastu rājendra ratho'ṣṭaguṇasaṁmitaḥ ,
nāgāyutabalo mānī tejasā na sa mānuṣaḥ.
17. bhīmasenaḥ tu rājendra rathaḥ aṣṭaguṇasammitaḥ
nāgāyutabalaḥ mānī tejasā na saḥ mānuṣaḥ
17. rājendra tu bhīmasenaḥ aṣṭaguṇasammitaḥ rathaḥ
nāgāyutabalaḥ mānī saḥ tejasā mānuṣaḥ na
17. O king of kings, Bhīmasena is indeed a warrior equivalent to eight charioteers. He possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants and is full of pride. By his might, he is not merely a human being.
माद्रीपुत्रौ तु रथिनौ द्वावेव पुरुषर्षभौ ।
अश्विनाविव रूपेण तेजसा च समन्वितौ ॥१८॥
18. mādrīputrau tu rathinau dvāveva puruṣarṣabhau ,
aśvināviva rūpeṇa tejasā ca samanvitau.
18. mādrīputrau tu rathinau dvau eva puruṣarṣabhau
aśvinau iva rūpeṇa tejasā ca samanvitau
18. tu mādrīputrau dvau eva puruṣarṣabhau rathinau
rūpeṇa ca tejasā aśvinau iva samanvitau
18. And the two sons of Mādrī, both indeed excellent warriors and best among men, are endowed with beauty and might like the two Aśvins.
एते चमूमुखगताः स्मरन्तः क्लेशमात्मनः ।
रुद्रवत्प्रचरिष्यन्ति तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ॥१९॥
19. ete camūmukhagatāḥ smarantaḥ kleśamātmanaḥ ,
rudravatpracariṣyanti tatra me nāsti saṁśayaḥ.
19. ete camūmukhagatāḥ smarantaḥ kleśam ātmanaḥ
rudravat pracariṣyanti tatra me na asti saṃśayaḥ
19. ātmanaḥ kleśam smarantaḥ ete camūmukhagatāḥ
rudravat pracariṣyanti tatra me saṃśayaḥ na asti
19. Remembering their own suffering (ātman), these warriors, positioned at the forefront of the army, will rage like Rudra. In this matter, I have no doubt.
सर्व एव महात्मानः शालस्कन्धा इवोद्गताः ।
प्रादेशेनाधिकाः पुम्भिरन्यैस्ते च प्रमाणतः ॥२०॥
20. sarva eva mahātmānaḥ śālaskandhā ivodgatāḥ ,
prādeśenādhikāḥ pumbhiranyaiste ca pramāṇataḥ.
20. sarve eva mahātmānaḥ śālaskandhāḥ iva udgatāḥ
prādeśena adhikāḥ pumbhiḥ anyaiḥ te ca pramāṇataḥ
20. sarve eva mahātmānaḥ śālaskandhāḥ iva udgatāḥ te
ca anyaiḥ pumbhiḥ prādeśena pramāṇataḥ adhikāḥ
20. All these great-souled men (mahātmānaḥ) stood out like tall śāla trees (śālaskandhāḥ), taller than other men by a span in their stature.
सिंहसंहननाः सर्वे पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः ।
चरितब्रह्मचर्याश्च सर्वे चातितपस्विनः ॥२१॥
21. siṁhasaṁhananāḥ sarve pāṇḍuputrā mahābalāḥ ,
caritabrahmacaryāśca sarve cātitapasvinaḥ.
21. siṃhasaṃhananāḥ sarve pāṇḍuputrāḥ mahābalāḥ
caritabrahmacaryāḥ ca sarve ca atitapasvinaḥ
21. sarve pāṇḍuputrāḥ siṃhasaṃhananāḥ mahābalāḥ
ca sarve caritabrahmacaryāḥ ca atitapasvinaḥ
21. All the sons of Pāṇḍu (pāṇḍuputrāḥ) were immensely powerful (mahābalāḥ), possessing frames as robust as lions. They had all practiced brahmacarya (celibacy) and were exceedingly austere (atitapasvinaḥ).
ह्रीमन्तः पुरुषव्याघ्रा व्याघ्रा इव बलोत्कटाः ।
जवे प्रहारे संमर्दे सर्व एवातिमानुषाः ।
सर्वे जितमहीपाला दिग्जये भरतर्षभ ॥२२॥
22. hrīmantaḥ puruṣavyāghrā vyāghrā iva balotkaṭāḥ ,
jave prahāre saṁmarde sarva evātimānuṣāḥ ,
sarve jitamahīpālā digjaye bharatarṣabha.
22. hrīmantaḥ puruṣavyāghrāḥ vyāghrāḥ
iva balotkaṭāḥ jave prahāre saṃmarde
sarve eva atimānuṣāḥ sarve
jitamahīpālāḥ digjaye bharatarṣabha
22. hrīmantaḥ puruṣavyāghrāḥ vyāghrāḥ
iva balotkaṭāḥ sarve eva jave prahāre
saṃmarde atimānuṣāḥ he bharatarṣabha
sarve digjaye jitamahīpālāḥ
22. They were modest (hrīmantaḥ), tiger-like among men (puruṣavyāghrāḥ), and exceedingly powerful like tigers. In speed, striking, and tumultuous battle (saṃmarde), all of them were indeed superhuman (atimānuṣāḥ). O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), all of them conquered kings in their conquests of the various regions (digjaye).
न चैषां पुरुषाः केचिदायुधानि गदाः शरान् ।
विषहन्ति सदा कर्तुमधिज्यान्यपि कौरव ।
उद्यन्तुं वा गदां गुर्वीं शरान्वापि प्रकर्षितुम् ॥२३॥
23. na caiṣāṁ puruṣāḥ kecidāyudhāni gadāḥ śarān ,
viṣahanti sadā kartumadhijyānyapi kaurava ,
udyantuṁ vā gadāṁ gurvīṁ śarānvāpi prakarṣitum.
23. na ca eṣām puruṣāḥ kecit āyudhāni
gadāḥ śarān viṣahanti sadā kartum
adhijyāni api kaurava udyantum vā
gadām gurvīm śarān vā api prakarṣitum
23. he kaurava ca eṣām kecit puruṣāḥ sadā āyudhāni gadāḥ śarān (ca) na viṣahanti,
adhijyāni api kartum (na viṣahanti) vā gurvīṃ gadām udyantum (na viṣahanti) vā śarān api prakarṣitum (na viṣahanti)
23. And, O Kaurava, no other men can ever wield their weapons, maces, or arrows. Nor can they even make their bows ready (adhijyāni api), or lift a heavy mace, or even draw arrows.
जवे लक्ष्यस्य हरणे भोज्ये पांसुविकर्षणे ।
बालैरपि भवन्तस्तैः सर्व एव विशेषिताः ॥२४॥
24. jave lakṣyasya haraṇe bhojye pāṁsuvikarṣaṇe ,
bālairapi bhavantastaiḥ sarva eva viśeṣitāḥ.
24. jave lakṣyasya haraṇe bhojye pāṃsuvikarṣaṇe
bālaiḥ api bhavantaḥ taiḥ sarve eva viśeṣitāḥ
24. bālaiḥ api taiḥ jave lakṣyasya haraṇe bhojye
pāṃsuvikarṣaṇe sarve eva bhavantaḥ viśeṣitāḥ
24. Even as children, they surpassed all of you and showed their distinct excellence in speed, target practice, eating, and kicking up dust.
ते ते सैन्यं समासाद्य व्याघ्रा इव बलोत्कटाः ।
विध्वंसयिष्यन्ति रणे मा स्म तैः सह संगमः ॥२५॥
25. te te sainyaṁ samāsādya vyāghrā iva balotkaṭāḥ ,
vidhvaṁsayiṣyanti raṇe mā sma taiḥ saha saṁgamaḥ.
25. te te sainyaṃ samāsādya vyāghrā iva balotkaṭāḥ
vidhvaṃsayiṣyanti raṇe mā sma taiḥ saha saṅgamaḥ
25. te te balotkaṭāḥ vyāghrā iva sainyaṃ samāsādya raṇe vidhvaṃsayiṣyanti.
taiḥ saha saṅgamaḥ mā sma.
25. They will approach the army and, like mighty tigers, will destroy it in battle. Therefore, do not engage in combat with them.
एकैकशस्ते संग्रामे हन्युः सर्वान्महीक्षितः ।
प्रत्यक्षं तव राजेन्द्र राजसूये यथाभवत् ॥२६॥
26. ekaikaśaste saṁgrāme hanyuḥ sarvānmahīkṣitaḥ ,
pratyakṣaṁ tava rājendra rājasūye yathābhavat.
26. ekaikaśaḥ te saṅgrāme hanyuḥ sarvān mahīkṣitaḥ
pratyakṣaṃ tava rājendra rājasūye yathā abhavat
26. rājendra,
ekaikaśaḥ te saṅgrāme sarvān mahīkṣitaḥ hanyuḥ.
yathā rājasūye abhavat,
tava pratyakṣaṃ.
26. One by one, they would indeed kill all kings in battle. You yourself witnessed this, O King of kings (rājendra), just as it occurred at the Rājasūya (royal consecration ritual).
द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं द्यूते च परुषा गिरः ।
ते संस्मरन्तः संग्रामे विचरिष्यन्ति कालवत् ॥२७॥
27. draupadyāśca parikleśaṁ dyūte ca paruṣā giraḥ ,
te saṁsmarantaḥ saṁgrāme vicariṣyanti kālavat.
27. draupadyāḥ ca parikleśaṃ dyūte ca paruṣā giraḥ
te saṃsmarantaḥ saṅgrāme vicariṣyanti kālavat
27. te draupadyāḥ ca parikleśaṃ dyūte ca paruṣā giraḥ saṃsmarantaḥ saṅgrāme kālavat vicariṣyanti.
27. Remembering Draupadī's great suffering and the harsh words spoken during the gambling match, they will roam the battlefield like Death (Kāla).
लोहिताक्षो गुडाकेशो नारायणसहायवान् ।
उभयोः सेनयोर्वीर रथो नास्तीह तादृशः ॥२८॥
28. lohitākṣo guḍākeśo nārāyaṇasahāyavān ,
ubhayoḥ senayorvīra ratho nāstīha tādṛśaḥ.
28. lohitākṣaḥ guḍākeśaḥ nārāyaṇasahāyavān ubhayoḥ
senayoḥ vīra rathaḥ na asti iha tādṛśaḥ
28. vīra ubhayoḥ senayoḥ iha tādṛśaḥ rathaḥ
lohitākṣaḥ guḍākeśaḥ nārāyaṇasahāyavān na asti
28. O hero (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), among both armies, there is no such chariot here as that of the red-eyed one (Kṛṣṇa), the conqueror of sleep (Arjuna), who has Nārāyaṇa (Kṛṣṇa) as his ally.
न हि देवेषु वा पूर्वं दानवेषूरगेषु वा ।
राक्षसेष्वथ यक्षेषु नरेषु कुत एव तु ॥२९॥
29. na hi deveṣu vā pūrvaṁ dānaveṣūrageṣu vā ,
rākṣaseṣvatha yakṣeṣu nareṣu kuta eva tu.
29. na hi deveṣu vā pūrvam dānaveṣu urageṣu vā
rākṣaseṣu atha yakṣeṣu nareṣu kutaḥ eva tu

29. Indeed, formerly, such a chariot was not found among the gods, or among the Dānavas, or among the Uragas, or among the Rākṣasas, or among the Yakṣas. How much less so among men!
भूतोऽथ वा भविष्यो वा रथः कश्चिन्मया श्रुतः ।
समायुक्तो महाराज यथा पार्थस्य धीमतः ॥३०॥
30. bhūto'tha vā bhaviṣyo vā rathaḥ kaścinmayā śrutaḥ ,
samāyukto mahārāja yathā pārthasya dhīmataḥ.
30. bhūtaḥ atha vā bhaviṣyaḥ vā rathaḥ kaścit mayā
śrutaḥ samāyuktaḥ mahārāja yathā pārthasya dhīmataḥ

30. O great king, I have heard of no such chariot, either past or future, that is equipped like that of the wise Pārtha (Arjuna).
वासुदेवश्च संयन्ता योद्धा चैव धनंजयः ।
गाण्डीवं च धनुर्दिव्यं ते चाश्वा वातरंहसः ॥३१॥
31. vāsudevaśca saṁyantā yoddhā caiva dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
gāṇḍīvaṁ ca dhanurdivyaṁ te cāśvā vātaraṁhasaḥ.

31. And Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) is the charioteer, and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) is indeed the warrior. And the bow is the divine Gāṇḍīva, and those horses are swift as the wind.
अभेद्यं कवचं दिव्यमक्षय्यौ च महेषुधी ।
अस्त्रग्रामश्च माहेन्द्रो रौद्रः कौबेर एव च ॥३२॥
32. abhedyaṁ kavacaṁ divyamakṣayyau ca maheṣudhī ,
astragrāmaśca māhendro raudraḥ kaubera eva ca.
32. abhedyam kavacam divyam akṣayyau ca maheṣudhī
astragrāmaḥ ca māhendraḥ raudraḥ kauberaḥ eva ca
32. abhedyam divyam kavacam ca akṣayyau maheṣudhī

32. This (chariot has) an impenetrable, divine armor, and two inexhaustible great quivers. It also possesses a collection of weapons (including) those of Indra, Rudra, and Kubera, too.
याम्यश्च वारुणश्चैव गदाश्चोग्रप्रदर्शनाः ।
वज्रादीनि च मुख्यानि नानाप्रहरणानि वै ॥३३॥
33. yāmyaśca vāruṇaścaiva gadāścograpradarśanāḥ ,
vajrādīni ca mukhyāni nānāpraharaṇāni vai.
33. yāmyaḥ ca vāruṇaḥ ca eva gadāḥ ca ugrapradarśanāḥ
vajrādīni ca mukhyāni nānāpraharaṇāni vai
33. ca yāmyaḥ ca vāruṇaḥ eva (astragrāmaḥ),

ca mukhyāni vajrādīni vai nānāpraharaṇāni (santi)
33. And it has (weapons) from Yama and Varuṇa, as well as maces that appear formidable. There are also many main weapons, such as the Vajra and various other kinds of missiles.
दानवानां सहस्राणि हिरण्यपुरवासिनाम् ।
हतान्येकरथेनाजौ कस्तस्य सदृशो रथः ॥३४॥
34. dānavānāṁ sahasrāṇi hiraṇyapuravāsinām ,
hatānyekarathenājau kastasya sadṛśo rathaḥ.

34. Thousands of Dānavas, inhabitants of Hiraṇyapura, were slain in battle by a single chariot. What other chariot can be compared to it?
एष हन्याद्धि संरम्भी बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
तव सेनां महाबाहुः स्वां चैव परिपालयन् ॥३५॥
35. eṣa hanyāddhi saṁrambhī balavānsatyavikramaḥ ,
tava senāṁ mahābāhuḥ svāṁ caiva paripālayan.
35. eṣaḥ hanyāt hi saṃrambhī balavān satyavikramaḥ
tava senām mahābāhuḥ svān ca eva paripālayan

35. This furious, mighty-armed one, who is strong and of true valor, would indeed destroy your army while also protecting his own (people).
अहं चैनं प्रत्युदियामाचार्यो वा धनंजयम् ।
न तृतीयोऽस्ति राजेन्द्र सेनयोरुभयोरपि ।
य एनं शरवर्षाणि वर्षन्तमुदियाद्रथी ॥३६॥
36. ahaṁ cainaṁ pratyudiyāmācāryo vā dhanaṁjayam ,
na tṛtīyo'sti rājendra senayorubhayorapi ,
ya enaṁ śaravarṣāṇi varṣantamudiyādrathī.
36. aham ca enam pratyudiyām ācāryaḥ vā
dhanañjayam na tṛtīyaḥ asti rājendra
senayoḥ ubhayoḥ api yaḥ enam
śaravarṣāṇi varṣantam udiyāt rathī
36. rājendra aham ca ācāryaḥ vā enam
dhanañjayam pratyudiyām ubhayoḥ senayoḥ
api yaḥ rathī enam śaravarṣāṇi
varṣantam udiyāt saḥ tṛtīyaḥ na asti
36. Only I or the preceptor (ācārya) Drona can confront Dhananjaya (Arjuna). O King, there is no third charioteer in either of the two armies who could face him when he rains down showers of arrows.
जीमूत इव घर्मान्ते महावातसमीरितः ।
समायुक्तस्तु कौन्तेयो वासुदेवसहायवान् ।
तरुणश्च कृती चैव जीर्णावावामुभावपि ॥३७॥
37. jīmūta iva gharmānte mahāvātasamīritaḥ ,
samāyuktastu kaunteyo vāsudevasahāyavān ,
taruṇaśca kṛtī caiva jīrṇāvāvāmubhāvapi.

37. Kaunteya (Arjuna) is like a cloud at the end of summer (gharma), agitated by a mighty wind; moreover, he is accompanied by Vasudeva (Krishna). He is young and accomplished, whereas we two are both old.
संजय उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु भीष्मस्य राज्ञां दध्वंसिरे तदा ।
काञ्चनाङ्गदिनः पीना भुजाश्चन्दनरूषिताः ॥३८॥
38. saṁjaya uvāca ,
etacchrutvā tu bhīṣmasya rājñāṁ dadhvaṁsire tadā ,
kāñcanāṅgadinaḥ pīnā bhujāścandanarūṣitāḥ.
38. sañjayaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā tu bhīṣmasya rājñām dadhvaṃsire
tadā kāñcanāṅgadinaḥ pīnāḥ bhujāḥ ca candanarūṣitāḥ

38. Sanjaya said: Upon hearing Bhishma's words, the kings' stout arms, adorned with golden armlets and smeared with sandalwood, then lost their vigor.
मनोभिः सह सावेगैः संस्मृत्य च पुरातनम् ।
सामर्थ्यं पाण्डवेयानां यथाप्रत्यक्षदर्शनात् ॥३९॥
39. manobhiḥ saha sāvegaiḥ saṁsmṛtya ca purātanam ,
sāmarthyaṁ pāṇḍaveyānāṁ yathāpratyakṣadarśanāt.

39. This occurred, as their minds became agitated upon remembering the ancient prowess (sāmarthya) of the Pāṇḍavas, which they had directly witnessed.
