वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं सनत्सुजातेन विदुरेण च धीमता ।
सार्धं कथयतो राज्ञः सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ sanatsujātena vidureṇa ca dhīmatā ,
sārdhaṁ kathayato rājñaḥ sā vyatīyāya śarvarī.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: While the king was conversing with the wise Vidura and Sanatsujāta in this manner, that night passed.
तस्यां रजन्यां व्युष्टायां राजानः सर्व एव ते ।
सभामाविविशुर्हृष्टाः सूतस्योपदिदृक्षया ॥२॥
2. tasyāṁ rajanyāṁ vyuṣṭāyāṁ rājānaḥ sarva eva te ,
sabhāmāviviśurhṛṣṭāḥ sūtasyopadidṛkṣayā.
2. tasyām rajanyām vyuṣṭāyām rājānaḥ sarve eva te
sabhām āviviśuḥ hṛṣṭāḥ sūtasya upadidṛkṣayā
2. When that night broke, all those kings, joyful, entered the assembly hall, eager to see the bard (Saṃjaya).
शुश्रूषमाणाः पार्थानां वचो धर्मार्थसंहितम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रमुखाः सर्वे ययू राजसभां शुभाम् ॥३॥
3. śuśrūṣamāṇāḥ pārthānāṁ vaco dharmārthasaṁhitam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭramukhāḥ sarve yayū rājasabhāṁ śubhām.

dhṛtarāṣṭramukhāḥ sarve yayū rājasabhām śubhām
3. All those kings, led by Dhṛtarāṣṭra and desiring to hear the words of the Pārthas (Pāṇḍavas) - words imbued with (natural law) dharma and purpose (artha) - proceeded to the splendid royal assembly hall.
सुधावदातां विस्तीर्णां कनकाजिरभूषिताम् ।
चन्द्रप्रभां सुरुचिरां सिक्तां परमवारिणा ॥४॥
4. sudhāvadātāṁ vistīrṇāṁ kanakājirabhūṣitām ,
candraprabhāṁ surucirāṁ siktāṁ paramavāriṇā.

candraprabhām surucirām siktām paramavāriṇā
4. (They went to the royal assembly hall,) which was whitewashed and expansive, adorned with golden courtyards, possessing the radiance of the moon, exceedingly charming, and sprinkled with pure water.
रुचिरैरासनैः स्तीर्णां काञ्चनैर्दारवैरपि ।
अश्मसारमयैर्दान्तैः स्वास्तीर्णैः सोत्तरच्छदैः ॥५॥
5. rucirairāsanaiḥ stīrṇāṁ kāñcanairdāravairapi ,
aśmasāramayairdāntaiḥ svāstīrṇaiḥ sottaracchadaiḥ.
5. ruciraiḥ āsanaiḥ stīrṇām kāñcanaiḥ dāravaiḥ api
aśmasāramayaiḥ dāntaiḥ svāstīrṇaiḥ sottaracchadaiḥ
5. It was covered with beautiful seats, made of gold, wood, and even steel, all well-spread, elegantly finished, and provided with canopies.
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपः शल्यः कृतवर्मा जयद्रथः ।
अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सोमदत्तश्च बाह्लिकः ॥६॥
6. bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ śalyaḥ kṛtavarmā jayadrathaḥ ,
aśvatthāmā vikarṇaśca somadattaśca bāhlikaḥ.
6. bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ śalyaḥ kṛtavarmā jayadrathaḥ
aśvatthāmā vikarṇaḥ ca somadattaḥ ca bāhlikaḥ
6. Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Śalya, Kṛtavarmā, Jayadratha, Aśvatthāmā, Vikaṛṇa, Somadatta, and Bāhlika.
विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञो युयुत्सुश्च महारथः ।
सर्वे च सहिताः शूराः पार्थिवा भरतर्षभ ।
धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य विविशुस्तां सभां शुभाम् ॥७॥
7. viduraśca mahāprājño yuyutsuśca mahārathaḥ ,
sarve ca sahitāḥ śūrāḥ pārthivā bharatarṣabha ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ puraskṛtya viviśustāṁ sabhāṁ śubhām.
7. viduraḥ ca mahāprājñaḥ yuyutsuḥ ca
mahārathaḥ sarve ca sahitāḥ śūrāḥ
pārthivāḥ bharatarṣabha dhṛtarāṣṭram
puraskṛtya viviśuḥ tām sabhām śubhām
7. Vidura, the greatly wise, and Yuyutsu, the great charioteer - and all these assembled heroes and kings, O best of the Bharatas, entered that auspicious assembly hall, led by Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
दुःशासनश्चित्रसेनः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
दुर्मुखो दुःसहः कर्ण उलूकोऽथ विविंशतिः ॥८॥
8. duḥśāsanaścitrasenaḥ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
durmukho duḥsahaḥ karṇa ulūko'tha viviṁśatiḥ.
8. duḥśāsanaḥ citrasenaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
durmukhaḥ dussaḥ karṇa ulūkaḥ atha viviṃśatiḥ
8. Duḥśāsana, Citrasena, and also Śakuni, the son of Subala; Durmukha, Dussaḥ, Karṇa, Ulūka, and Viviṃśati.
कुरुराजं पुरस्कृत्य दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ।
विविशुस्तां सभां राजन्सुराः शक्रसदो यथा ॥९॥
9. kururājaṁ puraskṛtya duryodhanamamarṣaṇam ,
viviśustāṁ sabhāṁ rājansurāḥ śakrasado yathā.
9. kuru-rājam puraskṛtya duryodhanam amarṣaṇam
viviśuḥ tām sabhām rājan surāḥ śakra-sadaḥ yathā
9. O King, with the resentful Duryodhana, the king of the Kurus, at their forefront, they entered that assembly hall, just as the gods enter the assembly of Indra.
आविशद्भिस्तदा राजञ्शूरैः परिघबाहुभिः ।
शुशुभे सा सभा राजन्सिंहैरिव गिरेर्गुहा ॥१०॥
10. āviśadbhistadā rājañśūraiḥ parighabāhubhiḥ ,
śuśubhe sā sabhā rājansiṁhairiva girerguhā.
10. āviśadbhiḥ tadā rājan śūraiḥ parigha-bāhubhiḥ
śuśubhe sā sabhā rājan siṃhaiḥ iva gireḥ guhā
10. O King, that assembly hall then shone splendidly, with those brave men whose arms were like maces entering it, just as a mountain cave shines with lions.
ते प्रविश्य महेष्वासाः सभां समितिशोभनाः ।
आसनानि महार्हाणि भेजिरे सूर्यवर्चसः ॥११॥
11. te praviśya maheṣvāsāḥ sabhāṁ samitiśobhanāḥ ,
āsanāni mahārhāṇi bhejire sūryavarcasaḥ.
11. te praviśya maheṣvāsāḥ sabhām samitiśobhanāḥ
āsanāni mahārghāṇi bhejire sūryavarcasaḥ
11. Those great archers, who were brilliant in assemblies and radiant like the sun, entered the hall and occupied the valuable seats.
आसनस्थेषु सर्वेषु तेषु राजसु भारत ।
द्वाःस्थो निवेदयामास सूतपुत्रमुपस्थितम् ॥१२॥
12. āsanastheṣu sarveṣu teṣu rājasu bhārata ,
dvāḥstho nivedayāmāsa sūtaputramupasthitam.
12. āsana-stheṣu sarveṣu teṣu rājasu bhārata
dvāḥsthaḥ nivedayām āsa sūta-putram upasthitam
12. O Bhārata, when all those kings had taken their seats, the doorkeeper announced the presence of the charioteer's son (Karṇa).
अयं स रथ आयाति योऽयासीत्पाण्डवान्प्रति ।
दूतो नस्तूर्णमायातः सैन्धवैः साधुवाहिभिः ॥१३॥
13. ayaṁ sa ratha āyāti yo'yāsītpāṇḍavānprati ,
dūto nastūrṇamāyātaḥ saindhavaiḥ sādhuvāhibhiḥ.
13. ayam saḥ rathaḥ āyāti yaḥ ayāsīt pāṇḍavān prati
dūtaḥ naḥ tūrṇam āyātaḥ saindhavaiḥ sādhuvāhibhiḥ
13. This is the very chariot that went to the Pāṇḍavas. Our messenger has returned swiftly, drawn by excellent horses from the Sindhu region.
उपयाय तु स क्षिप्रं रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली ।
प्रविवेश सभां पूर्णां महीपालैर्महात्मभिः ॥१४॥
14. upayāya tu sa kṣipraṁ rathātpraskandya kuṇḍalī ,
praviveśa sabhāṁ pūrṇāṁ mahīpālairmahātmabhiḥ.
14. upayāya tu saḥ kṣipram rathāt praskandya kuṇḍalī
praviveśa sabhām pūrṇām mahīpālaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
14. And having swiftly approached, he (Sañjaya), adorned with earrings, dismounted from the chariot and entered the assembly hall which was filled with great-souled kings.
संजय उवाच ।
प्राप्तोऽस्मि पाण्डवान्गत्वा तद्विजानीत कौरवाः ।
यथावयः कुरून्सर्वान्प्रतिनन्दन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥१५॥
15. saṁjaya uvāca ,
prāpto'smi pāṇḍavāngatvā tadvijānīta kauravāḥ ,
yathāvayaḥ kurūnsarvānpratinandanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
15. sañjayaḥ uvāca prāptaḥ asmi pāṇḍavān gatvā tat vijānīta
kauravāḥ yathāvayaḥ kurūn sarvān pratinandanti pāṇḍavāḥ
15. Sañjaya said: 'I have arrived after visiting the Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, O Kauravas, know this: The Pāṇḍavas are greeting all the Kurus according to their age.'
अभिवादयन्ति वृद्धांश्च वयस्यांश्च वयस्यवत् ।
यूनश्चाभ्यवदन्पार्थाः प्रतिपूज्य यथावयः ॥१६॥
16. abhivādayanti vṛddhāṁśca vayasyāṁśca vayasyavat ,
yūnaścābhyavadanpārthāḥ pratipūjya yathāvayaḥ.
16. abhivādayanti vṛddhān ca vayasyān ca vayasyavat
yūnaḥ ca abhyavadan pārthāḥ pratipūjya yathāvayaḥ
16. The Pāṇḍavas (sons of Pṛthā) salute the elders and greet their peers like friends. They also address the young ones after honoring them appropriately according to their age.
यथाहं धृतराष्ट्रेण शिष्टः पूर्वमितो गतः ।
अब्रुवं पाण्डवान्गत्वा तन्निबोधत पार्थिवाः ॥१७॥
17. yathāhaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa śiṣṭaḥ pūrvamito gataḥ ,
abruvaṁ pāṇḍavāngatvā tannibodhata pārthivāḥ.
17. yathā aham dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa śiṣṭaḥ pūrvam itaḥ gataḥ
abruvam pāṇḍavān gatvā tat nibodhata pārthivāḥ
17. As I, having been instructed by Dhritarashtra, previously went from here, I spoke to the Pandavas upon my arrival. Therefore, O kings, understand that.
