वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः शांतनवो भीष्मो भरतानां पितामहः ।
श्रुतवान्देशकालज्ञस्तत्त्वज्ञः सर्वधर्मवित् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ śāṁtanavo bhīṣmo bharatānāṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
śrutavāndeśakālajñastattvajñaḥ sarvadharmavit.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then Bhīṣma, the descendant of Śāntanu and the grandfather of the Bhāratas, who was learned, knowledgeable of place and time, a knower of truth, and conversant with all principles of natural law (dharma), (spoke).
आचार्यवाक्योपरमे तद्वाक्यमभिसंदधत् ।
हितार्थं स उवाचेमां भारतीं भारतान्प्रति ॥२॥
2. ācāryavākyoparame tadvākyamabhisaṁdadhat ,
hitārthaṁ sa uvācemāṁ bhāratīṁ bhāratānprati.
2. ācāryavākyoparame tat vākyam abhisaṃdadhat
hitārtham saḥ uvāca imām bhāratīm bhāratān prati
2. When the preceptor's words concluded, he (Bhishma), bearing those words in mind for their welfare (hitārtham), spoke this address to the Bhāratas.
युधिष्ठिरे समासक्तां धर्मज्ञे धर्मसंश्रिताम् ।
असत्सु दुर्लभां नित्यं सतां चाभिमतां सदा ।
भीष्मः समवदत्तत्र गिरं साधुभिरर्चिताम् ॥३॥
3. yudhiṣṭhire samāsaktāṁ dharmajñe dharmasaṁśritām ,
asatsu durlabhāṁ nityaṁ satāṁ cābhimatāṁ sadā ,
bhīṣmaḥ samavadattatra giraṁ sādhubhirarcitām.

dharmasaṃśritām asatsu durlabhām nityam
satām ca abhimatām sadā bhīṣmaḥ
samavadat tatra giram sādhubhiḥ arcitām
3. There, Bhishma spoke a speech that was focused on Yudhishthira, the knower of natural law (dharma), and itself rooted in natural law (dharma). It is ever rare for the wicked to understand, but always cherished by the virtuous, and honored by good people.
यथैष ब्राह्मणः प्राह द्रोणः सर्वार्थतत्त्ववित् ।
सर्वलक्षणसंपन्ना नाशं नार्हन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥४॥
4. yathaiṣa brāhmaṇaḥ prāha droṇaḥ sarvārthatattvavit ,
sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpannā nāśaṁ nārhanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
4. yathā eṣaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ prāha droṇaḥ sarvārthatattvavit
sarvalakṣaṇasaṃpannāḥ nāśam na arhanti pāṇḍavāḥ
4. Just as this Brahmin (brāhmaṇa), Droṇa, the knower of the truth of all matters, has declared, "The Pāṇḍavas, who are endowed with all auspicious characteristics, do not deserve destruction."
श्रुतवृत्तोपसंपन्नाः साधुव्रतसमन्विताः ।
वृद्धानुशासने मग्नाः सत्यव्रतपरायणाः ॥५॥
5. śrutavṛttopasaṁpannāḥ sādhuvratasamanvitāḥ ,
vṛddhānuśāsane magnāḥ satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ.
5. śrutavṛttopasaṃpannāḥ sādhuvratasamanvitāḥ
vṛddhānuśāsane magnāḥ satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ
5. They are endowed with knowledge (śruta) and good conduct, committed to virtuous vows, absorbed in the instructions of their elders, and dedicated to the vow of truth.
समयं समयज्ञास्ते पालयन्तः शुचिव्रताः ।
नावसीदितुमर्हन्ति उद्वहन्तः सतां धुरम् ॥६॥
6. samayaṁ samayajñāste pālayantaḥ śucivratāḥ ,
nāvasīditumarhanti udvahantaḥ satāṁ dhuram.
6. samayam samayajñāḥ te pālayantaḥ śucivratāḥ
na avasīditum arhanti udvahantaḥ satām dhuram
6. Those who understand the proper time and observe their pure vows, bearing the heavy responsibility of the virtuous, ought not to become distressed.
धर्मतश्चैव गुप्तास्ते स्ववीर्येण च पाण्डवाः ।
न नाशमधिगच्छेयुरिति मे धीयते मतिः ॥७॥
7. dharmataścaiva guptāste svavīryeṇa ca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
na nāśamadhigaccheyuriti me dhīyate matiḥ.
7. dharmataḥ ca eva guptāḥ te svavīryeṇa ca pāṇḍavāḥ
na nāśam adhigaccheyuḥ iti me dhīyate matiḥ
7. Indeed, protected both by natural law (dharma) and by their own valor, the Pāṇḍavas should not meet with destruction—this is my firm belief.
तत्र बुद्धिं प्रणेष्यामि पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत ।
न तु नीतिः सुनीतस्य शक्यतेऽन्वेषितुं परैः ॥८॥
8. tatra buddhiṁ praṇeṣyāmi pāṇḍavānprati bhārata ,
na tu nītiḥ sunītasya śakyate'nveṣituṁ paraiḥ.
8. tatra buddhim praṇeṣyāmi pāṇḍavān prati bhārata
na tu nītiḥ sunītasya śakyate anveṣitum paraiḥ
8. Therefore, O Bhārata, I will apply my intellect to the matter of the Pāṇḍavas. But the policy of a well-guided person cannot be easily discovered by opponents.
यत्तु शक्यमिहास्माभिस्तान्वै संचिन्त्य पाण्डवान् ।
बुद्ध्या प्रवक्तुं न द्रोहात्प्रवक्ष्यामि निबोध तत् ॥९॥
9. yattu śakyamihāsmābhistānvai saṁcintya pāṇḍavān ,
buddhyā pravaktuṁ na drohātpravakṣyāmi nibodha tat.
9. yat tu śakyam iha asmābhiḥ tān vai saṃcintya pāṇḍavān
buddhyā pravaktum na drohāt pravakṣyāmi nibodha tat
9. Therefore, whatever can be spoken by us here, having truly considered the Pāṇḍavas with wisdom, that I shall declare, not out of malice. Listen to it carefully.
सा त्वियं साधु वक्तव्या न त्वनीतिः कथंचन ।
वृद्धानुशासने तात तिष्ठतः सत्यशीलिनः ॥१०॥
10. sā tviyaṁ sādhu vaktavyā na tvanītiḥ kathaṁcana ,
vṛddhānuśāsane tāta tiṣṭhataḥ satyaśīlinaḥ.
10. sa tu iyam sādhu vaktavyā na tu anītiḥ kathaṃcana
vṛddhānusāsane tāta tiṣṭhataḥ satyaśīlinaḥ
10. O dear one, this matter must certainly be stated properly, and never by any means as an impropriety, for one who adheres to the instructions of elders and is devoted to truth.
अवश्यं त्विह धीरेण सतां मध्ये विवक्षता ।
यथामति विवक्तव्यं सर्वशो धर्मलिप्सया ॥११॥
11. avaśyaṁ tviha dhīreṇa satāṁ madhye vivakṣatā ,
yathāmati vivaktavyaṁ sarvaśo dharmalipsayā.
11. avaśyam tu iha dhīreṇa satām madhye vivakṣatā
yathāmati vivaktavyam sarvaśaḥ dharmalipsayā
11. Indeed, here, a wise person, when wishing to speak among the virtuous, must express (their views) fully, according to their own understanding, with the sole desire to uphold natural law (dharma).
तत्र नाहं तथा मन्ये यथायमितरो जनः ।
पुरे जनपदे वापि यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥१२॥
12. tatra nāhaṁ tathā manye yathāyamitaro janaḥ ,
pure janapade vāpi yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
12. tatra na aham tathā manye yathā ayam itaraḥ janaḥ
pure janapade vā api yatra rājā Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
12. Regarding that matter, I do not think the same way as these other people do. This is especially true in any city or region where King Yudhishthira is the ruler.
नासूयको न चापीर्षुर्नातिवादी न मत्सरी ।
भविष्यति जनस्तत्र स्वं स्वं धर्ममनुव्रतः ॥१३॥
13. nāsūyako na cāpīrṣurnātivādī na matsarī ,
bhaviṣyati janastatra svaṁ svaṁ dharmamanuvrataḥ.
13. na asūyakaḥ na ca api īrṣuḥ na ativādī na matsari
bhaviṣyati janaḥ tatra svam svam dharmam anuvrataḥ
13. There, the populace will not be malicious, nor jealous, nor overly critical, nor miserly. Each will faithfully follow their own intrinsic nature (dharma).
ब्रह्मघोषाश्च भूयांसः पूर्णाहुत्यस्तथैव च ।
क्रतवश्च भविष्यन्ति भूयांसो भूरिदक्षिणाः ॥१४॥
14. brahmaghoṣāśca bhūyāṁsaḥ pūrṇāhutyastathaiva ca ,
kratavaśca bhaviṣyanti bhūyāṁso bhūridakṣiṇāḥ.
14. brahmaghoṣāḥ ca bhūyāṃsaḥ pūrṇāhutyaḥ tathā eva ca
kratavaḥ ca bhaviṣyanti bhūyāṃsaḥ bhūridakṣiṇāḥ
14. There will be numerous recitations of the Vedas and, similarly, many final offerings. Additionally, there will be many Vedic rituals (kratu) accompanied by generous donations.
सदा च तत्र पर्जन्यः सम्यग्वर्षी न संशयः ।
संपन्नसस्या च मही निरीतीका भविष्यति ॥१५॥
15. sadā ca tatra parjanyaḥ samyagvarṣī na saṁśayaḥ ,
saṁpannasasyā ca mahī nirītīkā bhaviṣyati.
15. sadā ca tatra parjanyaḥ samyak varṣī na saṃśayaḥ
sampannasasyā ca mahī nirītīkā bhaviṣyati
15. And there, the rain will always fall properly, without a doubt. The earth will have flourishing crops and be free from calamities.
रसवन्ति च धान्यानि गुणवन्ति फलानि च ।
गन्धवन्ति च माल्यानि शुभशब्दा च भारती ॥१६॥
16. rasavanti ca dhānyāni guṇavanti phalāni ca ,
gandhavanti ca mālyāni śubhaśabdā ca bhāratī.
16. rasavanti ca dhānyāni guṇavanti phalāni ca
gandhavanti ca mālyāni śubhaśabdā ca bhāratī
16. The grains will be flavorful, and the fruits will be wholesome. The garlands will be fragrant, and speech will be auspicious.
वायुश्च सुखसंस्पर्शो निष्प्रतीपं च दर्शनम् ।
भयं नाभ्याविशेत्तत्र यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥१७॥
17. vāyuśca sukhasaṁsparśo niṣpratīpaṁ ca darśanam ,
bhayaṁ nābhyāviśettatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
17. vāyuḥ ca sukhasaṃsparśaḥ niṣpratīpam ca darśanam
bhayam na abhyāviśet tatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
17. The wind will be pleasant to the touch, and all sights will be unimpeded (niṣpratīpa). Fear will not enter there, where King Yudhiṣṭhira resides.
गावश्च बहुलास्तत्र न कृशा न च दुर्दुहाः ।
पयांसि दधिसर्पींषि रसवन्ति हितानि च ॥१८॥
18. gāvaśca bahulāstatra na kṛśā na ca durduhāḥ ,
payāṁsi dadhisarpīṁṣi rasavanti hitāni ca.
18. gāvaḥ ca bahulāḥ tatra na kṛśāḥ na ca durduhāḥ
payāṃsi dadhisarpīṃṣi rasavanti hitāni ca
18. There, the cows are numerous; they are neither emaciated nor difficult to milk. Their milk, yogurt, and ghee are flavorful and wholesome.
गुणवन्ति च पानानि भोज्यानि रसवन्ति च ।
तत्र देशे भविष्यन्ति यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥१९॥
19. guṇavanti ca pānāni bhojyāni rasavanti ca ,
tatra deśe bhaviṣyanti yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
19. guṇavanti ca pānāni bhojyāni rasavanti ca
tatra deśe bhaviṣyanti yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
19. Also, the drinks and foods in that land where King Yudhiṣṭhira rules will be of good quality and flavorful.
रसाः स्पर्शाश्च गन्धाश्च शब्दाश्चापि गुणान्विताः ।
दृश्यानि च प्रसन्नानि यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥२०॥
20. rasāḥ sparśāśca gandhāśca śabdāścāpi guṇānvitāḥ ,
dṛśyāni ca prasannāni yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
20. rasāḥ sparśāḥ ca gandhāḥ ca śabdāḥ ca api guṇānvitāḥ
dṛśyāni ca prasannāni yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
20. In the land where King Yudhiṣṭhira rules, the tastes, touches, smells, and sounds will also be of excellent quality, and the sights will be pleasing.
स्वैः स्वैर्गुणैः सुसंयुक्तास्तस्मिन्वर्षे त्रयोदशे ।
देशे तस्मिन्भविष्यन्ति तात पाण्डवसंयुते ॥२१॥
21. svaiḥ svairguṇaiḥ susaṁyuktāstasminvarṣe trayodaśe ,
deśe tasminbhaviṣyanti tāta pāṇḍavasaṁyute.
21. svaiḥ svaiḥ guṇaiḥ susaṃyuktāḥ tasmin varṣe
trayodaśe deśe tasmin bhaviṣyanti tāta pāṇḍavasaṃyute
21. Dear one, in that land, allied with the Pāṇḍavas, during that thirteenth year, all these (attributes, discussed in previous verses) will be well-endowed with their own respective excellent qualities.
संप्रीतिमाञ्जनस्तत्र संतुष्टः शुचिरव्ययः ।
देवतातिथिपूजासु सर्वभूतानुरागवान् ॥२२॥
22. saṁprītimāñjanastatra saṁtuṣṭaḥ śuciravyayaḥ ,
devatātithipūjāsu sarvabhūtānurāgavān.
22. sampreetimān janaḥ tatra santuṣṭaḥ śuciḥ
avyayaḥ devatātithipūjāsu sarvabhūtānurāgavān
22. There, the people will be full of affection, contented, pure, and steadfast. They will be devoted to worshipping gods and guests, and benevolent towards all beings.
इष्टदानो महोत्साहः शश्वद्धर्मपरायणः ।
अशुभद्विट्शुभप्रेप्सुर्नित्ययज्ञः शुभव्रतः ।
भविष्यति जनस्तत्र यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥२३॥
23. iṣṭadāno mahotsāhaḥ śaśvaddharmaparāyaṇaḥ ,
aśubhadviṭśubhaprepsurnityayajñaḥ śubhavrataḥ ,
bhaviṣyati janastatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
23. iṣṭadānaḥ mahotsāhaḥ śaśvat
dharmaparāyaṇaḥ aśubhadviṭ śubhapr'epsuḥ
nityayajñaḥ śubhavrataḥ bhaviṣyati
janaḥ tatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
23. Where King Yudhishthira rules, the people there will be generous with desired gifts, greatly enthusiastic, and always devoted to natural law (dharma). They will despise inauspicious things, desire prosperity, constantly perform sacred rituals (yajña), and observe virtuous vows.
त्यक्तवाक्यानृतस्तात शुभकल्याणमङ्गलः ।
शुभार्थेप्सुः शुभमतिर्यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
भविष्यति जनस्तत्र नित्यं चेष्टप्रियव्रतः ॥२४॥
24. tyaktavākyānṛtastāta śubhakalyāṇamaṅgalaḥ ,
śubhārthepsuḥ śubhamatiryatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhaviṣyati janastatra nityaṁ ceṣṭapriyavrataḥ.
24. tyaktavākyānṛtaḥ tāta śubhakalyāṇamaṅgalaḥ
śubhārthepsuḥ śubhamatiḥ
yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhaviṣyati
janaḥ tatra nityam ca iṣṭapriyavrataḥ
24. O dear one, where King Yudhishthira rules, the people there will be truthful in speech, auspicious, bringing well-being, desiring good outcomes, and of a good mind. They will always observe their cherished and desired vows.
धर्मात्मा स तदादृश्यः सोऽपि तात द्विजातिभिः ।
किं पुनः प्राकृतैः पार्थः शक्यो विज्ञातुमन्ततः ॥२५॥
25. dharmātmā sa tadādṛśyaḥ so'pi tāta dvijātibhiḥ ,
kiṁ punaḥ prākṛtaiḥ pārthaḥ śakyo vijñātumantataḥ.
25. dharmātmā saḥ tadā adṛśyaḥ saḥ api tāta dvijātibhiḥ
kim punaḥ prākṛtaiḥ pārthaḥ śakyaḥ vijñātum antataḥ
25. O dear one, that righteous-souled (dharmātmā) king, even by the twice-born, is difficult to perceive (adṛśyaḥ) or understand. How then can Pārtha (Yudhishthira) be truly known by ordinary people?
यस्मिन्सत्यं धृतिर्दानं परा शान्तिर्ध्रुवा क्षमा ।
ह्रीः श्रीः कीर्तिः परं तेज आनृशंस्यमथार्जवम् ॥२६॥
26. yasminsatyaṁ dhṛtirdānaṁ parā śāntirdhruvā kṣamā ,
hrīḥ śrīḥ kīrtiḥ paraṁ teja ānṛśaṁsyamathārjavam.
26. yasmin satyam dhṛtiḥ dānam parā śāntiḥ dhruvā kṣamā
hrīḥ śrīḥ kīrtiḥ param tejaḥ ānṛśaṃsyam atha ārjavam
26. In whom (or in which situation) there is truth, resolve, generosity (dāna), supreme peace, constant forgiveness, modesty, splendor, fame, supreme brilliance, compassion, and moreover, integrity.
तस्मात्तत्र निवासं तु छन्नं सत्रेण धीमतः ।
गतिं वा परमां तस्य नोत्सहे वक्तुमन्यथा ॥२७॥
27. tasmāttatra nivāsaṁ tu channaṁ satreṇa dhīmataḥ ,
gatiṁ vā paramāṁ tasya notsahe vaktumanyathā.
27. tasmāt tatra nivāsam tu channam satreṇa dhīmataḥ
gatim vā parām tasya na utsahe vaktum anyathā
27. Therefore, regarding his dwelling there, which is indeed concealed by a sacrificial session (satra) of the wise one, or his supreme destiny, I am unable to speak otherwise.
एवमेतत्तु संचिन्त्य यत्कृतं मन्यसे हितम् ।
तत्क्षिप्रं कुरु कौरव्य यद्येवं श्रद्दधासि मे ॥२८॥
28. evametattu saṁcintya yatkṛtaṁ manyase hitam ,
tatkṣipraṁ kuru kauravya yadyevaṁ śraddadhāsi me.
28. evam etat tu saṃcintya yat kṛtam manyase hitam
tat kṣipram kuru kauravya yadi evam śraddadhāsi me
28. Having thus considered this, whatever you deem beneficial, do that quickly, O Kauravya, if you have faith (śraddhā) in me in this way.
