जनमेजय उवाच ।
प्राप्य राज्यं महातेजा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
यदन्यदकरोद्विप्र तन्मे वक्तुमिहार्हसि ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
prāpya rājyaṁ mahātejā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
yadanyadakarodvipra tanme vaktumihārhasi.

1. Janamejaya said: "O Brahmin (vipra), you should tell me here what else the greatly energetic King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarāja) did after attaining the kingdom."
भगवान्वा हृषीकेशस्त्रैलोक्यस्य परो गुरुः ।
ऋषे यदकरोद्वीरस्तच्च व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. bhagavānvā hṛṣīkeśastrailokyasya paro guruḥ ,
ṛṣe yadakarodvīrastacca vyākhyātumarhasi.

| ṛṣe yat akarot vīraḥ tat ca vyākhyātum arhasi

2. "Or, O Seer (ṛṣi), you should also explain (vyākhyātum arhasi) what acts the glorious Hṛṣīkeśa (Bhagavān), the supreme teacher (guru) of the three worlds (trailokya), the hero, performed."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
शृणु राजेन्द्र तत्त्वेन कीर्त्यमानं मयानघ ।
वासुदेवं पुरस्कृत्य यदकुर्वत पाण्डवाः ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājendra tattvena kīrtyamānaṁ mayānagha ,
vāsudevaṁ puraskṛtya yadakurvata pāṇḍavāḥ.
3. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca | śṛṇu rājendra tattvena kīrtyamānam
mayā anagha | vāsudevam puraskṛtya yat akurvata pāṇḍavāḥ

3. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "O sinless king (anagha rājendra), hear (śṛṇu) in truth (tattvena) what the Pāṇḍavas did, putting Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in front, as it is being recited by me."
प्राप्य राज्यं महातेजा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
चातुर्वर्ण्यं यथायोगं स्वे स्वे धर्मे न्यवेशयत् ॥४॥
4. prāpya rājyaṁ mahātejā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
cāturvarṇyaṁ yathāyogaṁ sve sve dharme nyaveśayat.

4. After attaining the kingdom, the greatly energetic King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarāja) established the four social classes (cāturvarṇya) in their respective natural laws (dharma) according to propriety.
ब्राह्मणानां सहस्रं च स्नातकानां महात्मनाम् ।
सहस्रनिष्कमेकैकं वाचयामास पाण्डवः ॥५॥
5. brāhmaṇānāṁ sahasraṁ ca snātakānāṁ mahātmanām ,
sahasraniṣkamekaikaṁ vācayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ.

sahasraniṣkam ekaikam vācayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ
5. pāṇḍavaḥ mahātmanām snātakānām brāhmaṇānām

5. The Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) caused a thousand great-souled (mahātman) Brahmins, who were graduates (snātaka), to recite (scriptures), giving each a thousand niṣkas (gold coins).
तथानुजीविनो भृत्यान्संश्रितानतिथीनपि ।
कामैः संतर्पयामास कृपणांस्तर्ककानपि ॥६॥
6. tathānujīvino bhṛtyānsaṁśritānatithīnapi ,
kāmaiḥ saṁtarpayāmāsa kṛpaṇāṁstarkakānapi.
6. tathā anujīvinaḥ bhṛtyān saṃśritān atithīn
api kāmaiḥ saṃtarpayāmāsa kṛpaṇān tarkakān api
6. tathā anujīvinaḥ bhṛtyān saṃśritān atithīn
api kṛpaṇān tarkakān api kāmaiḥ saṃtarpayāmāsa
6. Similarly, he gratified with their desires (kāma) his dependents, servants, those who sought refuge, and guests, as well as the poor and even the logicians.
पुरोहिताय धौम्याय प्रादादयुतशः स गाः ।
धनं सुवर्णं रजतं वासांसि विविधानि च ॥७॥
7. purohitāya dhaumyāya prādādayutaśaḥ sa gāḥ ,
dhanaṁ suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ vāsāṁsi vividhāni ca.
7. purohitāya dhaumyāya prādāt ayutaśaḥ saḥ gāḥ
dhanam suvarṇam rajatam vāsāṃsi vividhāni ca
7. saḥ purohitāya dhaumyāya ayutaśaḥ gāḥ dhanam
suvarṇam rajatam vividhāni vāsāṃsi ca prādāt
7. He (Yudhiṣṭhira) gave to the priest Dhaumya tens of thousands of cows, wealth, gold, silver, and various garments.
कृपाय च महाराज गुरुवृत्तिमवर्तत ।
विदुराय च धर्मात्मा पूजां चक्रे यतव्रतः ॥८॥
8. kṛpāya ca mahārāja guruvṛttimavartata ,
vidurāya ca dharmātmā pūjāṁ cakre yatavrataḥ.
8. kṛpāya ca mahārāja guruvṛttim avartata
vidurāya ca dharmātmā pūjām cakre yatavrataḥ
8. mahārāja,
(saḥ) kṛpāya ca guruvṛttim avartata dharmātmā yatavrataḥ ca vidurāya pūjām cakre
8. And, O great king (mahārāja), he (Yudhiṣṭhira) maintained the conduct (vṛtti) due to a teacher (guru) towards Kṛpa. And that righteous (dharma) soul (ātman), firm in his vows, performed veneration (pūjā) for Vidura.
भक्षान्नपानैर्विविधैर्वासोभिः शयनासनैः ।
सर्वान्संतोषयामास संश्रितान्ददतां वरः ॥९॥
9. bhakṣānnapānairvividhairvāsobhiḥ śayanāsanaiḥ ,
sarvānsaṁtoṣayāmāsa saṁśritāndadatāṁ varaḥ.
9. bhakṣa-anna-pānaiḥ vividhaiḥ vāsobhiḥ śayana-āsanaiḥ
sarvān santoṣayāmāsa saṃśritān dadatām varaḥ
9. dadatām varaḥ vividhaiḥ bhakṣa-anna-pānaiḥ vāsobhiḥ
śayana-āsanaiḥ sarvān saṃśritān santoṣayāmāsa
9. The best among givers fully satisfied all those dependent on him with various kinds of food, drink, clothes, beds, and seats.
लब्धप्रशमनं कृत्वा स राजा राजसत्तम ।
युयुत्सोर्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पूजां चक्रे महायशाः ॥१०॥
10. labdhapraśamanaṁ kṛtvā sa rājā rājasattama ,
yuyutsordhārtarāṣṭrasya pūjāṁ cakre mahāyaśāḥ.
10. labdha-praśamanam kṛtvā sa rājā rāja-sattama
yuyutsoḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya pūjām cakre mahā-yaśāḥ
10. sa mahā-yaśāḥ rājā rāja-sattama labdha-praśamanam
kṛtvā dhārtarāṣṭrasya yuyutsoḥ pūjām cakre
10. That greatly renowned king, the best among kings, after having brought about peace, offered homage to Yuyutsu, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
धृतराष्ट्राय तद्राज्यं गान्धार्यै विदुराय च ।
निवेद्य स्वस्थवद्राजन्नास्ते राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥११॥
11. dhṛtarāṣṭrāya tadrājyaṁ gāndhāryai vidurāya ca ,
nivedya svasthavadrājannāste rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
11. dhṛtarāṣṭrāya tat rājyam gāndhāryai vidurāya ca
nivedya svasthavat rājan āste rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
11. rājan rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tat rājyam dhṛtarāṣṭrāya
gāndhāryai ca vidurāya nivedya svasthavat āste
11. O King, King Yudhiṣṭhira, after submitting that kingdom to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, to Gāndhārī, and to Vidura, now remains like one at peace.
तथा सर्वं स नगरं प्रसाद्य जनमेजय ।
वासुदेवं महात्मानमभ्यगच्छत्कृताञ्जलिः ॥१२॥
12. tathā sarvaṁ sa nagaraṁ prasādya janamejaya ,
vāsudevaṁ mahātmānamabhyagacchatkṛtāñjaliḥ.
12. tathā sarvam sa nagaram prasādya janamejaya
vāsudevam mahā-ātmānam abhyagacchat kṛta-añjaliḥ
12. tathā janamejaya sa nagaram sarvam prasādya
kṛta-añjaliḥ mahā-ātmānam vāsudevam abhyagacchat
12. And thus, O Janamejaya, after pacifying the entire city, he, with joined hands, approached the great-souled Vāsudeva.
ततो महति पर्यङ्के मणिकाञ्चनभूषिते ।
ददर्श कृष्णमासीनं नीलं मेराविवाम्बुदम् ॥१३॥
13. tato mahati paryaṅke maṇikāñcanabhūṣite ,
dadarśa kṛṣṇamāsīnaṁ nīlaṁ merāvivāmbudam.
13. tataḥ mahati paryaṅke maṇikāñcanabhūṣite
dadarśa kṛṣṇam āsīnam nīlam merau iva ambudam
13. tataḥ mahati maṇikāñcanabhūṣite paryaṅke
merau iva ambudam nīlam āsīnam kṛṣṇam dadarśa
13. Then, on a magnificent couch adorned with gems and gold, he saw Krishna seated, whose dark blue complexion resembled a cloud upon Mount Meru.
जाज्वल्यमानं वपुषा दिव्याभरणभूषितम् ।
पीतकौशेयसंवीतं हेम्नीवोपहितं मणिम् ॥१४॥
14. jājvalyamānaṁ vapuṣā divyābharaṇabhūṣitam ,
pītakauśeyasaṁvītaṁ hemnīvopahitaṁ maṇim.
14. jājvalyamānam vapuṣā divyābharaṇabhūṣitam
pītakauśeyasaṃvītam hemni iva upahitam maṇim
14. vapuṣā jājvalyamānam divyābharaṇabhūṣitam
pītakauśeyasaṃvītam hemni iva upahitam maṇim
14. (He was) intensely radiant in his form, adorned with divine ornaments, and enveloped in yellow silk, resembling a jewel set within gold.
कौस्तुभेन उरःस्थेन मणिनाभिविराजितम् ।
उद्यतेवोदयं शैलं सूर्येणाप्तकिरीटिनम् ।
नौपम्यं विद्यते यस्य त्रिषु लोकेषु किंचन ॥१५॥
15. kaustubhena uraḥsthena maṇinābhivirājitam ,
udyatevodayaṁ śailaṁ sūryeṇāptakirīṭinam ,
naupamyaṁ vidyate yasya triṣu lokeṣu kiṁcana.
15. kaustubhena uraḥsthena maṇinā
abhivirājitam udyate iva udayam śailam
sūryeṇa āptakirīṭinam na aupamyam
vidyate yasya triṣu lokeṣu kiṃcana
15. uraḥsthena kaustubhena maṇinā
abhivirājitam (saḥ) sūryeṇa āptakirīṭinam
udyate iva udayam śailam yasya
triṣu lokeṣu kiṃcana aupamyam na vidyate
15. He was brilliantly adorned by the Kaustubha gem (Kaustubha) resting on his chest, resembling a rising mountain whose peak is touched by the rising sun. There is no comparison (upamya) for him whatsoever in the three worlds.
सोऽभिगम्य महात्मानं विष्णुं पुरुषविग्रहम् ।
उवाच मधुराभाषः स्मितपूर्वमिदं तदा ॥१६॥
16. so'bhigamya mahātmānaṁ viṣṇuṁ puruṣavigraham ,
uvāca madhurābhāṣaḥ smitapūrvamidaṁ tadā.
16. saḥ abhigamya mahātmānam viṣṇum puruṣavigraham
uvāca madhurābhāṣaḥ smitapūrvam idam tadā
16. tadā saḥ madhurābhāṣaḥ smitapūrvam puruṣavigraham
mahātmānam viṣṇum abhigamya idam uvāca
16. Then, he (the speaker) with a sweet voice, approached the great-souled Vishnu (Viṣṇu), who had assumed a human form (puruṣa), and, preceded by a smile, spoke these words.
सुखेन ते निशा कच्चिद्व्युष्टा बुद्धिमतां वर ।
कच्चिज्ज्ञानानि सर्वाणि प्रसन्नानि तवाच्युत ॥१७॥
17. sukhena te niśā kaccidvyuṣṭā buddhimatāṁ vara ,
kaccijjñānāni sarvāṇi prasannāni tavācyuta.
17. sukhena te niśā kaccit vyuṣṭā buddhimatām vara
kaccit jñānāni sarvāṇi prasannāni tava acyuta
17. acyuta buddhimatām vara te niśā sukhena kaccit
vyuṣṭā tava sarvāṇi jñānāni kaccit prasannāni
17. O Acyuta, best among the intelligent, I hope your night passed comfortably. Is all your knowledge clear and well-disposed?
तव ह्याश्रित्य तां देवीं बुद्धिं बुद्धिमतां वर ।
वयं राज्यमनुप्राप्ताः पृथिवी च वशे स्थिता ॥१८॥
18. tava hyāśritya tāṁ devīṁ buddhiṁ buddhimatāṁ vara ,
vayaṁ rājyamanuprāptāḥ pṛthivī ca vaśe sthitā.
18. tava hi āśritya tām devīm buddhim buddhimatām vara
vayam rājyam anuprāptāḥ pṛthivī ca vaśe sthitā
18. buddhimatām vara hi vayam tava tām devīm buddhim
āśritya rājyam anuprāptāḥ ca pṛthivī vaśe sthitā
18. O best among the intelligent, indeed, by relying on that divine intellect of yours, we have attained the kingdom, and the earth remains under our control.
भवत्प्रसादाद्भगवंस्त्रिलोकगतिविक्रम ।
जयः प्राप्तो यशश्चाग्र्यं न च धर्माच्च्युता वयम् ॥१९॥
19. bhavatprasādādbhagavaṁstrilokagativikrama ,
jayaḥ prāpto yaśaścāgryaṁ na ca dharmāccyutā vayam.
19. bhavatprasādāt bhagavan trilokagatīvikrama jayaḥ
prāptaḥ yaśaḥ ca agryam na ca dharmāt cyutāḥ vayam
19. bhagavan trilokagatīvikrama bhavatprasādāt jayaḥ
ca agryam yaśaḥ prāptaḥ ca vayam dharmāt na cyutāḥ
19. O Bhagavan, whose valor extends throughout the three worlds, by your grace, we have achieved victory and preeminent fame. And we have not deviated from our intrinsic nature (dharma).
तं तथा भाषमाणं तु धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
नोवाच भगवान्किंचिद्ध्यानमेवान्वपद्यत ॥२०॥
20. taṁ tathā bhāṣamāṇaṁ tu dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
novāca bhagavānkiṁciddhyānamevānvapadyata.
20. tam tathā bhāṣamāṇam tu dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
na uvāca bhagavān kiñcit dhyānam eva anvapatyata
20. tu bhagavān tathā bhāṣamāṇam tam dharmarājam
yudhiṣṭhiram kiñcit na uvāca eva dhyānam anvapatyata
20. But Bhagavan said nothing to Yudhishthira, the king of righteousness (dharma), who was speaking thus. He simply resorted to meditation (dhyāna).
