युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
नापदामस्ति मर्यादा न निमित्तं न कारणम् ।
धर्मस्तु विभजत्यत्र उभयोः पुण्यपापयोः ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
nāpadāmasti maryādā na nimittaṁ na kāraṇam ,
dharmastu vibhajatyatra ubhayoḥ puṇyapāpayoḥ.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca na āpadām asti maryādā na nimittam na
kāraṇam dharmaḥ tu vibhajati atra ubhayoḥ puṇyapāpayoḥ
1. Yudhishthira said: "There is no fixed limit to misfortunes (āpadām), nor any specific sign or underlying cause (kāraṇam) for them. However, it is the natural law (dharma) that differentiates between the results of both merit and demerit in such situations."
भीम उवाच ।
प्रातिकाम्यनयत्कृष्णां सभायां प्रेष्यवत्तदा ।
न मया निहतस्तत्र तेन प्राप्ताः स्म संशयम् ॥२॥
2. bhīma uvāca ,
prātikāmyanayatkṛṣṇāṁ sabhāyāṁ preṣyavattadā ,
na mayā nihatastatra tena prāptāḥ sma saṁśayam.
2. bhīmaḥ uvāca prātikāmya anayat kṛṣṇām sabhāyām preṣyavat
tadā na mayā nihataḥ tatra tena prāptāḥ smaḥ saṃśayam
2. Bhima said: "He forcibly led Krishna (Draupadi) into the assembly hall at that time, treating her like a slave. Because I did not strike him down then and there, we have now fallen into this great peril (saṃśaya)."
अर्जुन उवाच ।
वाचस्तीक्ष्णास्थिभेदिन्यः सूतपुत्रेण भाषिताः ।
अतितीक्ष्णा मया क्षान्तास्तेन प्राप्ताः स्म संशयम् ॥३॥
3. arjuna uvāca ,
vācastīkṣṇāsthibhedinyaḥ sūtaputreṇa bhāṣitāḥ ,
atitīkṣṇā mayā kṣāntāstena prāptāḥ sma saṁśayam.
3. arjuna uvāca vācaḥ tīkṣṇā-asthi-bhedinyaḥ sūta-putreṇa
bhāṣitāḥ ati-tīkṣṇā mayā kṣāntāḥ tena prāptāḥ sma saṃśayam
3. Arjuna said: "The sharp, bone-piercing words spoken by the son of the charioteer (Karṇa), though exceedingly harsh, were endured by me. Because of that endurance, we have fallen into this perilous uncertainty."
सहदेव उवाच ।
शकुनिस्त्वां यदाजैषीदक्षद्यूतेन भारत ।
स मया न हतस्तत्र तेन प्राप्ताः स्म संशयम् ॥४॥
4. sahadeva uvāca ,
śakunistvāṁ yadājaiṣīdakṣadyūtena bhārata ,
sa mayā na hatastatra tena prāptāḥ sma saṁśayam.
4. sahadeva uvāca śakuniḥ tvām yadā ajaiṣīt akṣa-dyūtena
bhārata saḥ mayā na hataḥ tatra tena prāptāḥ sma saṃśayam
4. Sahadeva said: "O descendant of Bharata (Yudhiṣṭhira), when Śakuni defeated you through the dice game, he was not slain by me then. Because of that (failure to kill him), we have fallen into this perilous uncertainty."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा नकुलं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
आरुह्य वृक्षं माद्रेय निरीक्षस्व दिशो दश ॥५॥
5. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā nakulaṁ vākyamabravīt ,
āruhya vṛkṣaṁ mādreya nirīkṣasva diśo daśa.
5. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā nakulam vākyam
abravīt āruhya vṛkṣam mādreya nirīkṣasva diśaḥ daśa
5. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Then King Yudhiṣṭhira spoke these words to Nakula: 'Ascend a tree, O son of Mādrī, and look in the ten directions.'"
पानीयमन्तिके पश्य वृक्षान्वाप्युदकाश्रयान् ।
इमे हि भ्रातरः श्रान्तास्तव तात पिपासिताः ॥६॥
6. pānīyamantike paśya vṛkṣānvāpyudakāśrayān ,
ime hi bhrātaraḥ śrāntāstava tāta pipāsitāḥ.
6. pānīyam antike paśya vṛkṣān vā api udaka-āśrayān
ime hi bhrātaraḥ śrāntāḥ tava tāta pipāsitāḥ
6. Look for water nearby, or trees dependent on water. For these brothers of yours, dear son, are weary and thirsty.
नकुलस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा शीघ्रमारुह्य पादपम् ।
अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठमभिवीक्ष्य समन्ततः ॥७॥
7. nakulastu tathetyuktvā śīghramāruhya pādapam ,
abravīdbhrātaraṁ jyeṣṭhamabhivīkṣya samantataḥ.
7. nakulaḥ tu tathā iti uktvā śīghram āruhya pādapam
abravīt bhrātaram jyeṣṭham abhivīkṣya samantataḥ
7. Nakula, having said "So be it," quickly climbed a tree. After looking all around, he then spoke to his elder brother.
पश्यामि बहुलान्राजन्वृक्षानुदकसंश्रयान् ।
सारसानां च निर्ह्रादमत्रोदकमसंशयम् ॥८॥
8. paśyāmi bahulānrājanvṛkṣānudakasaṁśrayān ,
sārasānāṁ ca nirhrādamatrodakamasaṁśayam.
8. paśyāmi bahulān rājan vṛkṣān udakasaṃśrayān
sārasānām ca nirhrādam atra udakam asaṃśayam
8. "O king, I see many water-dwelling trees and hear the cry of cranes. There is undoubtedly water here."
ततोऽब्रवीत्सत्यधृतिः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
गच्छ सौम्य ततः शीघ्रं तूर्णं पानीयमानय ॥९॥
9. tato'bravītsatyadhṛtiḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
gaccha saumya tataḥ śīghraṁ tūrṇaṁ pānīyamānaya.
9. tataḥ abravīt satyadhṛtiḥ kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
gaccha saumya tataḥ śīghram tūrṇam pānīyam ānaya
9. Then Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti and firm in truth (satyadhṛti), spoke, "O gentle one, go there swiftly and quickly bring water."
नकुलस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य शासनात् ।
प्राद्रवद्यत्र पानीयं शीघ्रं चैवान्वपद्यत ॥१०॥
10. nakulastu tathetyuktvā bhrāturjyeṣṭhasya śāsanāt ,
prādravadyatra pānīyaṁ śīghraṁ caivānvapadyata.
10. nakulaḥ tu tathā iti uktvā bhrātuḥ jyeṣṭhasya śāsanāt
prādravat yatra pānīyam śīghram ca eva anvapadyata
10. But Nakula, having said "So be it" at the command of his elder brother, quickly ran to where the water was and indeed found it.
स दृष्ट्वा विमलं तोयं सारसैः परिवारितम् ।
पातुकामस्ततो वाचमन्तरिक्षात्स शुश्रुवे ॥११॥
11. sa dṛṣṭvā vimalaṁ toyaṁ sārasaiḥ parivāritam ,
pātukāmastato vācamantarikṣātsa śuśruve.
11. sa dṛṣṭvā vimalaṃ toyam sārasaiḥ parivāritam
pātukāmaḥ tataḥ vācam antarikṣāt sa śuśruve
11. When he saw the clear water, which was surrounded by cranes, and wished to drink, he then heard a voice from the sky.
मा तात साहसं कार्षीर्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः ।
प्रश्नानुक्त्वा तु माद्रेय ततः पिब हरस्व च ॥१२॥
12. mā tāta sāhasaṁ kārṣīrmama pūrvaparigrahaḥ ,
praśnānuktvā tu mādreya tataḥ piba harasva ca.
12. mā tāta sāhasam kārṣīḥ mama pūrvaparigrahaḥ
praśnān uktvā tu mādreya tataḥ piba harasva ca
12. My dear (son), do not act rashly! This (water) is my prior possession. O son of Madri, only after you have answered the questions may you then drink and take (the water).
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं नकुलः सुपिपासितः ।
अपिबच्छीतलं तोयं पीत्वा च निपपात ह ॥१३॥
13. anādṛtya tu tadvākyaṁ nakulaḥ supipāsitaḥ ,
apibacchītalaṁ toyaṁ pītvā ca nipapāta ha.
13. anādṛtya tu tat vākyam nakulaḥ supipāsitaḥ
apibat śītalam toyam pītvā ca nipapāta ha
13. However, Nakula, being extremely thirsty, disregarded that statement and drank the cold water. As soon as he drank, he fell down.
चिरायमाणे नकुले कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं वीरं सहदेवमरिंदमम् ॥१४॥
14. cirāyamāṇe nakule kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
abravīdbhrātaraṁ vīraṁ sahadevamariṁdamam.
14. cirāyamāṇe nakule kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
abravīt bhrātaram vīram sahadevam arindamam
14. When Nakula was taking a long time, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, spoke to his heroic brother Sahadeva, the subduer of foes.
भ्राता चिरायते तात सहदेव तवाग्रजः ।
तं चैवानय सोदर्यं पानीयं च त्वमानय ॥१५॥
15. bhrātā cirāyate tāta sahadeva tavāgrajaḥ ,
taṁ caivānaya sodaryaṁ pānīyaṁ ca tvamānaya.
15. bhrātā cirāyate tāta sahadeva tava agrajaḥ |
taṃ ca eva ānaya sodaryaṃ pānīyaṃ ca tvaṃ ānaya
15. Dear Sahadeva, your elder brother is taking a long time. Go and bring him, your full brother. And you yourself, bring water.
सहदेवस्तथेत्युक्त्वा तां दिशं प्रत्यपद्यत ।
ददर्श च हतं भूमौ भ्रातरं नकुलं तदा ॥१६॥
16. sahadevastathetyuktvā tāṁ diśaṁ pratyapadyata ,
dadarśa ca hataṁ bhūmau bhrātaraṁ nakulaṁ tadā.
16. sahadevaḥ tathā iti uktvā tāṃ diśaṃ prati apadyata
| dadarśa ca hataṃ bhūmau bhrātaraṃ nakulaṃ tadā
16. Sahadeva, having said, 'So be it,' proceeded towards that direction. And then he saw his brother Nakula lying slain on the ground.
भ्रातृशोकाभिसंतप्तस्तृषया च प्रपीडितः ।
अभिदुद्राव पानीयं ततो वागभ्यभाषत ॥१७॥
17. bhrātṛśokābhisaṁtaptastṛṣayā ca prapīḍitaḥ ,
abhidudrāva pānīyaṁ tato vāgabhyabhāṣata.
17. bhrātṛśokābhisantaptaḥ tṛṣayā ca prapīḍitaḥ
| abhidudrāva pānīyaṃ tataḥ vāk abhyabhāṣata
17. Tormented by grief for his brother and greatly afflicted by thirst, he rushed towards the water. Then a voice spoke to him.
मा तात साहसं कार्षीर्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः ।
प्रश्नानुक्त्वा यथाकामं ततः पिब हरस्व च ॥१८॥
18. mā tāta sāhasaṁ kārṣīrmama pūrvaparigrahaḥ ,
praśnānuktvā yathākāmaṁ tataḥ piba harasva ca.
18. mā tāta sāhasaṃ kārṣīḥ mama pūrvaparigrahaḥ |
praśnān uktvā yathākāmaṃ tataḥ piba harasva ca
18. Dear son, do not act rashly! This water is my prior possession. After you have answered the questions as I desire, then you may drink and take it.
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं सहदेवः पिपासितः ।
अपिबच्छीतलं तोयं पीत्वा च निपपात ह ॥१९॥
19. anādṛtya tu tadvākyaṁ sahadevaḥ pipāsitaḥ ,
apibacchītalaṁ toyaṁ pītvā ca nipapāta ha.
19. anādṛtya tu tat vākyaṃ sahadevaḥ pipāsitaḥ
apibat śītalaṃ toyam pītvā ca nipapāta ha
19. However, Sahadeva, being thirsty, disregarded that warning. He drank the cold water, and having drunk it, he indeed fell down.
अथाब्रवीत्स विजयं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
भ्रातरौ ते चिरगतौ बीभत्सो शत्रुकर्शन ।
तौ चैवानय भद्रं ते पानीयं च त्वमानय ॥२०॥
20. athābravītsa vijayaṁ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhrātarau te ciragatau bībhatso śatrukarśana ,
tau caivānaya bhadraṁ te pānīyaṁ ca tvamānaya.
20. atha abravīt sa vijayam kuntīputraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhrātarau te ciragatau
bībhatso śatrukārśana tau ca eva
ānaya bhadram te pānīyam ca tvam ānaya
20. Then Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti, spoke to Arjuna (Vijaya): 'O Bibhatsu, subduer of enemies, your two brothers have been gone for a long time. Bring them back, and may good fortune be with you! Also, you should bring water.'
एवमुक्तो गुडाकेशः प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः ।
आमुक्तखड्गो मेधावी तत्सरः प्रत्यपद्यत ॥२१॥
21. evamukto guḍākeśaḥ pragṛhya saśaraṁ dhanuḥ ,
āmuktakhaḍgo medhāvī tatsaraḥ pratyapadyata.
21. evam uktaḥ guḍākeśaḥ pragṛhya saśaram dhanuḥ
āmuktakhaḍgaḥ medhāvī tat saraḥ pratyapadyata
21. Thus addressed, Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), who was intelligent and had his sword girt, took up his bow with arrows and approached that lake.
यतः पुरुषशार्दूलौ पानीयहरणे गतौ ।
तौ ददर्श हतौ तत्र भ्रातरौ श्वेतवाहनः ॥२२॥
22. yataḥ puruṣaśārdūlau pānīyaharaṇe gatau ,
tau dadarśa hatau tatra bhrātarau śvetavāhanaḥ.
22. yataḥ puruṣaśārdūlau pānīyaharaṇe gatau tau
dadarśa hatau tatra bhrātarau śvetavāhanaḥ
22. Where those two best of men had gone to fetch water, Śvetavāhana (Arjuna) saw his two brothers lying slain there.
प्रसुप्ताविव तौ दृष्ट्वा नरसिंहः सुदुःखितः ।
धनुरुद्यम्य कौन्तेयो व्यलोकयत तद्वनम् ॥२३॥
23. prasuptāviva tau dṛṣṭvā narasiṁhaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ ,
dhanurudyamya kaunteyo vyalokayata tadvanam.
23. pra-suptau iva tau dṛṣṭvā narasiṃhaḥ su-duḥkhitaḥ
dhanuḥ udyamya kaunteyaḥ vyalokayat tat vanam
23. Seeing those two as if fast asleep, Narasiṃha became greatly distressed. Kaunteya, raising his bow, surveyed that forest.
नापश्यत्तत्र किंचित्स भूतं तस्मिन्महावने ।
सव्यसाची ततः श्रान्तः पानीयं सोऽभ्यधावत ॥२४॥
24. nāpaśyattatra kiṁcitsa bhūtaṁ tasminmahāvane ,
savyasācī tataḥ śrāntaḥ pānīyaṁ so'bhyadhāvata.
24. na apaśyat tatra kiṃcit sa bhūtam tasmin mahā-vane
savya-sācī tataḥ śrāntaḥ pānīyam saḥ abhyadhāvat
24. He saw no creature at all in that great forest. Then Savya-sācī (Arjuna), feeling exhausted, ran towards water.
अभिधावंस्ततो वाचमन्तरिक्षात्स शुश्रुवे ।
किमासीदसि पानीयं नैतच्छक्यं बलात्त्वया ॥२५॥
25. abhidhāvaṁstato vācamantarikṣātsa śuśruve ,
kimāsīdasi pānīyaṁ naitacchakyaṁ balāttvayā.
25. abhidhāvan tataḥ vācam antarikṣāt saḥ śuśruve
kim āsīdasi pānīyam na etat śakyam balāt tvayā
25. While he was running, he then heard a voice from the sky: "Why do you approach the water? This cannot be obtained by force by you."
कौन्तेय यदि वै प्रश्नान्मयोक्तान्प्रतिपत्स्यसे ।
ततः पास्यसि पानीयं हरिष्यसि च भारत ॥२६॥
26. kaunteya yadi vai praśnānmayoktānpratipatsyase ,
tataḥ pāsyasi pānīyaṁ hariṣyasi ca bhārata.
26. kaunteya yadi vai praśnān mayā uktān pratipatsyase
tataḥ pāsyasi pānīyam hariṣyasi ca bhārata
26. O Kaunteya, if you answer the questions spoken by me, then you may drink the water and take it, O Bhārata (Arjuna).
वारितस्त्वब्रवीत्पार्थो दृश्यमानो निवारय ।
यावद्बाणैर्विनिर्भिन्नः पुनर्नैवं वदिष्यसि ॥२७॥
27. vāritastvabravītpārtho dṛśyamāno nivāraya ,
yāvadbāṇairvinirbhinnaḥ punarnaivaṁ vadiṣyasi.
27. vāritaḥ tu abravīt pārthaḥ dṛśyamānaḥ nivāraya |
yāvat bāṇaiḥ vinirbhinnaḥ punaḥ na evam vadiṣyasi
27. Being restrained, Arjuna (pārtha) said, "Restrain me while I am still visible! Once pierced by arrows, you will not speak like this again."
एवमुक्त्वा ततः पार्थः शरैरस्त्रानुमन्त्रितैः ।
ववर्ष तां दिशं कृत्स्नां शब्दवेधं च दर्शयन् ॥२८॥
28. evamuktvā tataḥ pārthaḥ śarairastrānumantritaiḥ ,
vavarṣa tāṁ diśaṁ kṛtsnāṁ śabdavedhaṁ ca darśayan.
28. evam uktvā tataḥ pārthaḥ śaraiḥ astrānumantritaiḥ
| vavarṣa tām diśam kṛtsnām śabdavedham ca darśayan
28. Having spoken thus, Arjuna (pārtha) then, with arrows consecrated by mantras, rained upon that entire direction, also demonstrating his ability to shoot by sound.
कर्णिनालीकनाराचानुत्सृजन्भरतर्षभ ।
अनेकैरिषुसंघातैरन्तरिक्षं ववर्ष ह ॥२९॥
29. karṇinālīkanārācānutsṛjanbharatarṣabha ,
anekairiṣusaṁghātairantarikṣaṁ vavarṣa ha.
29. karṇinālīkanārācān utsṛjan bharatarṣabha |
anekaiḥ iṣusaṃghātaiḥ antarikṣam vavarṣa ha
29. Oh best of the Bharatas, releasing karni, nalika, and naraca arrows, he rained upon the sky with many groups of arrows.
यक्ष उवाच ।
किं विघातेन ते पार्थ प्रश्नानुक्त्वा ततः पिब ।
अनुक्त्वा तु ततः प्रश्नान्पीत्वैव न भविष्यसि ॥३०॥
30. yakṣa uvāca ,
kiṁ vighātena te pārtha praśnānuktvā tataḥ piba ,
anuktvā tu tataḥ praśnānpītvaiva na bhaviṣyasi.
30. yakṣaḥ uvāca | kim vighātena te pārtha praśnān uktvā tataḥ
piba | anuktvā tu tataḥ praśnān pītvā eva na bhaviṣyasi
30. The Yakṣa said: "Arjuna (pārtha), what is the use of your obstructing (me)? Answer the questions and then drink. If you drink without answering the questions, you will certainly not exist (will die)."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स त्वमोघानिषून्मुक्त्वा तृष्णयाभिप्रपीडितः ।
अविज्ञायैव तान्प्रश्नान्पीत्वैव निपपात ह ॥३१॥
31. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa tvamoghāniṣūnmuktvā tṛṣṇayābhiprapīḍitaḥ ,
avijñāyaiva tānpraśnānpītvaiva nipapāta ha.
31. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca sa tu amogha-iṣūn muktvā tṛṣṇayā
abhiprapīḍitaḥ avijñāya eva tān praśnān pītvā eva nipapāta ha
31. Vaiśampāyana said: But he, having released unfailing arrows, afflicted by thirst, fell down after merely drinking the water, without understanding those questions.
अथाब्रवीद्भीमसेनं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च बीभत्सुश्चापराजितः ॥३२॥
32. athābravīdbhīmasenaṁ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca bībhatsuścāparājitaḥ.
32. atha abravīt bhīmasenam kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca bībhatsuḥ ca aparājitaḥ
32. Then Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, spoke to Bhīmasena, along with Nakula, Sahadeva, and the unconquered Arjuna (Bībhatsu).
चिरं गतास्तोयहेतोर्न चागच्छन्ति भारत ।
तांश्चैवानय भद्रं ते पानीयं च त्वमानय ॥३३॥
33. ciraṁ gatāstoyahetorna cāgacchanti bhārata ,
tāṁścaivānaya bhadraṁ te pānīyaṁ ca tvamānaya.
33. ciram gatāḥ toyahetoḥ na ca āgacchanti bhārata
tān ca eva ānaya bhadram te pānīyam ca tvam ānaya
33. "They have been gone a long time for water and do not return, O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata). Bring them and also bring water. May good fortune be with you."
भीमसेनस्तथेत्युक्त्वा तां दिशं प्रत्यपद्यत ।
यत्र ते पुरुषव्याघ्रा भ्रातरोऽस्य निपातिताः ॥३४॥
34. bhīmasenastathetyuktvā tāṁ diśaṁ pratyapadyata ,
yatra te puruṣavyāghrā bhrātaro'sya nipātitāḥ.
34. bhīmasenaḥ tathā iti uktvā tām diśam prati apadyata
yatra te puruṣa-vyāghrāḥ bhrātaraḥ asya nipātitāḥ
34. Bhīmasena, having said "So be it," went towards that direction where his brothers, those tiger-like men, had fallen.
तान्दृष्ट्वा दुःखितो भीमस्तृषया च प्रपीडितः ।
अमन्यत महाबाहुः कर्म तद्यक्षरक्षसाम् ।
स चिन्तयामास तदा योद्धव्यं ध्रुवमद्य मे ॥३५॥
35. tāndṛṣṭvā duḥkhito bhīmastṛṣayā ca prapīḍitaḥ ,
amanyata mahābāhuḥ karma tadyakṣarakṣasām ,
sa cintayāmāsa tadā yoddhavyaṁ dhruvamadya me.
35. tān dṛṣṭvā duḥkhitaḥ bhīmaḥ tṛṣayā
ca prapīḍitaḥ | amanyata mahābāhuḥ
karma tat yakṣarakṣasām | sa cintayāmāsa
tadā yoddhavyam dhruvam adya me
35. Upon seeing them, Bhīma, the mighty-armed one, became distressed and tormented by thirst. He thought, 'This act must be that of yakṣas or rakṣasas.' He then considered, 'Indeed, I must fight today.'
पास्यामि तावत्पानीयमिति पार्थो वृकोदरः ।
ततोऽभ्यधावत्पानीयं पिपासुः पुरुषर्षभः ॥३६॥
36. pāsyāmi tāvatpānīyamiti pārtho vṛkodaraḥ ,
tato'bhyadhāvatpānīyaṁ pipāsuḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ.

36. Pārtha (Bhīma), also known as Vṛkodara, said, 'First, I will drink water.' Then, this thirsty foremost among men ran towards the water.
यक्ष उवाच ।
मा तात साहसं कार्षीर्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः ।
प्रश्नानुक्त्वा तु कौन्तेय ततः पिब हरस्व च ॥३७॥
37. yakṣa uvāca ,
mā tāta sāhasaṁ kārṣīrmama pūrvaparigrahaḥ ,
praśnānuktvā tu kaunteya tataḥ piba harasva ca.

| praśnān uktvā tu kaunteya tataḥ piba harasva ca
37. The yakṣa said, 'My dear son, do not act rashly! This is already under my control. But, O son of Kuntī, after answering the questions, then drink and take (the water).'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्ततो भीमो यक्षेणामिततेजसा ।
अविज्ञायैव तान्प्रश्नान्पीत्वैव निपपात ह ॥३८॥
38. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastato bhīmo yakṣeṇāmitatejasā ,
avijñāyaiva tānpraśnānpītvaiva nipapāta ha.

amitatejasā | avijñāya eva tān praśnān pītvā eva nipapāta ha
38. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thus addressed by the yakṣa of immeasurable energy, Bhīma, without even understanding those questions, drank the water and indeed fell down.
ततः कुन्तीसुतो राजा विचिन्त्य पुरुषर्षभः ।
समुत्थाय महाबाहुर्दह्यमानेन चेतसा ॥३९॥
39. tataḥ kuntīsuto rājā vicintya puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
samutthāya mahābāhurdahyamānena cetasā.

39. Then, having reflected deeply, the mighty-armed king, Yudhishthira (Kunti's son), that bull among men, rose up with a burning heart.
अपेतजननिर्घोषं प्रविवेश महावनम् ।
रुरुभिश्च वराहैश्च पक्षिभिश्च निषेवितम् ॥४०॥
40. apetajananirghoṣaṁ praviveśa mahāvanam ,
rurubhiśca varāhaiśca pakṣibhiśca niṣevitam.

40. He entered a great forest, which was devoid of human sounds and frequented by deer, boars, and birds.
नीलभास्वरवर्णैश्च पादपैरुपशोभितम् ।
भ्रमरैरुपगीतं च पक्षिभिश्च महायशाः ॥४१॥
41. nīlabhāsvaravarṇaiśca pādapairupaśobhitam ,
bhramarairupagītaṁ ca pakṣibhiśca mahāyaśāḥ.

bhramaraiḥ upagītam ca pakṣibhiḥ ca mahāyaśāḥ
41. And it was adorned by trees of dark, shining colors; and it was melodiously sung to by bees and also by birds. The highly renowned (Yudhishthira)...
स गच्छन्कानने तस्मिन्हेमजालपरिष्कृतम् ।
ददर्श तत्सरः श्रीमान्विश्वकर्मकृतं यथा ॥४२॥
42. sa gacchankānane tasminhemajālapariṣkṛtam ,
dadarśa tatsaraḥ śrīmānviśvakarmakṛtaṁ yathā.
42. saḥ gacchan kānane tasmin hemajālaperiṣkṛtam
dadarśa tat saraḥ śrīmān viśvakarmakṛtam yathā
42. As that glorious (Yudhishthira) walked in that forest, he beheld a lake adorned with golden networks, as if it had been crafted by Vishwakarma.
उपेतं नलिनीजालैः सिन्धुवारैश्च वेतसैः ।
केतकैः करवीरैश्च पिप्पलैश्चैव संवृतम् ।
श्रमार्तस्तदुपागम्य सरो दृष्ट्वाथ विस्मितः ॥४३॥
43. upetaṁ nalinījālaiḥ sindhuvāraiśca vetasaiḥ ,
ketakaiḥ karavīraiśca pippalaiścaiva saṁvṛtam ,
śramārtastadupāgamya saro dṛṣṭvātha vismitaḥ.

43. The lake was covered with lotus thickets, Vitex negundo trees, reeds, screw-pine plants, oleander plants, and certainly peepal trees. Exhausted by fatigue, he approached that lake, and upon seeing it, he was amazed.
