वैशंपायन उवाच ।
वनवासाय चक्रुस्ते मतिं पार्थाः पराजिताः ।
अजिनान्युत्तरीयाणि जगृहुश्च यथाक्रमम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
vanavāsāya cakruste matiṁ pārthāḥ parājitāḥ ,
ajinānyuttarīyāṇi jagṛhuśca yathākramam.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca vanavāsāya cakruḥ te matim pārthāḥ
parājitāḥ ajināni uttarīyāṇi jagṛhuḥ ca yathākramam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Those Pārthas, having been defeated, made the decision for dwelling in the forest (vanavāsa). And they took up their deer skins and upper garments in due order.
अजिनैः संवृतान्दृष्ट्वा हृतराज्यानरिंदमान् ।
प्रस्थितान्वनवासाय ततो दुःशासनोऽब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. ajinaiḥ saṁvṛtāndṛṣṭvā hṛtarājyānariṁdamān ,
prasthitānvanavāsāya tato duḥśāsano'bravīt.
2. ajinaiḥ saṃvṛtān dṛṣṭvā hṛtarājyān ariṃdamān
prasthitān vanavāsāya tataḥ duḥśāsanaḥ abravīt
2. Then, Duḥśāsana spoke, seeing those subduers of enemies, whose kingdoms had been seized, clad in deerskins, and departed for forest exile.
प्रवृत्तं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य चक्रं राज्ञो महात्मनः ।
पराभूताः पाण्डुपुत्रा विपत्तिं परमां गताः ॥३॥
3. pravṛttaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya cakraṁ rājño mahātmanaḥ ,
parābhūtāḥ pāṇḍuputrā vipattiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ.
3. pravṛttam dhārtarāṣṭrasya cakram rājñaḥ mahātmanaḥ
parābhūtāḥ pāṇḍuputrāḥ vipattim paramām gatāḥ
3. The power (cakra) of the great-souled King, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), has been set in motion. The sons of Pāṇḍu have been defeated and have fallen into the greatest misfortune.
अद्य देवाः संप्रयाताः समैर्वर्त्मभिरस्थलैः ।
गुणज्येष्ठास्तथा ज्येष्ठा भूयांसो यद्वयं परैः ॥४॥
4. adya devāḥ saṁprayātāḥ samairvartmabhirasthalaiḥ ,
guṇajyeṣṭhāstathā jyeṣṭhā bhūyāṁso yadvayaṁ paraiḥ.
4. adya devāḥ saṃprayātāḥ samaiḥ vartmabhiḥ asthalaiḥ
guṇajyeṣṭhāḥ tathā jyeṣṭhāḥ bhūyāṃsaḥ yat vayam paraiḥ
4. Today, the gods have proceeded on even and unobstructed paths. This is because we are superior in qualities, indeed the most prominent, and more numerous than our adversaries.
नरकं पातिताः पार्था दीर्घकालमनन्तकम् ।
सुखाच्च हीना राज्याच्च विनष्टाः शाश्वतीः समाः ॥५॥
5. narakaṁ pātitāḥ pārthā dīrghakālamanantakam ,
sukhācca hīnā rājyācca vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ.
5. narakam pātitāḥ pārthāḥ dīrghakālam anantakam
sukhāt ca hīnāḥ rājyāt ca vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
5. The Pāṇḍavas have been cast into an endless hell (naraka) for a long time. They are deprived of both happiness and kingdom, and are ruined for all eternity.
बलेन मत्ता ये ते स्म धार्तराष्ट्रान्प्रहासिषुः ।
ते निर्जिता हृतधना वनमेष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥६॥
6. balena mattā ye te sma dhārtarāṣṭrānprahāsiṣuḥ ,
te nirjitā hṛtadhanā vanameṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
6. balena mattā ye te sma dhārtarāṣṭrān prahāsiṣuḥ
te nirjitā hṛtadhanā vanam eṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ
6. Those Pāṇḍavas (pāṇḍavāḥ) who were arrogant due to their strength and used to ridicule the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (dhārtarāṣṭrān)—they, having been defeated and deprived of their wealth, will now go to the forest.
चित्रान्संनाहानवमुञ्चन्तु चैषां वासांसि दिव्यानि च भानुमन्ति ।
निवास्यन्तां रुरुचर्माणि सर्वे यथा ग्लहं सौबलस्याभ्युपेताः ॥७॥
7. citrānsaṁnāhānavamuñcantu caiṣāṁ; vāsāṁsi divyāni ca bhānumanti ,
nivāsyantāṁ rurucarmāṇi sarve; yathā glahaṁ saubalasyābhyupetāḥ.
7. citrān saṃnāhān avamuñcantu ca
eṣām vāsāṃsi divyāni ca bhānumanti
nivāsyantām rurucarmāṇi sarve
yathā glaham saubalasya abhyupetāḥ
7. Let them cast off their colorful armors and their splendid, shining garments. Let all of them be made to wear deer skins, just as they agreed to Śakuni's (saubalasya) wager.
न सन्ति लोकेषु पुमांस ईदृशा इत्येव ये भावितबुद्धयः सदा ।
ज्ञास्यन्ति तेऽऽत्मानमिमेऽद्य पाण्डवा विपर्यये षण्ढतिला इवाफलाः ॥८॥
8. na santi lokeṣu pumāṁsa īdṛśā; ityeva ye bhāvitabuddhayaḥ sadā ,
jñāsyanti te''tmānamime'dya pāṇḍavā; viparyaye ṣaṇḍhatilā ivāphalāḥ.
8. na santi lokeṣu pumāṃsaḥ īdṛśāḥ iti
eva ye bhāvitabuddhayaḥ sadā
jñāsyanti te ātmānam ime adya pāṇḍavāḥ
viparyaye ṣaṇḍhatilāḥ iva apahalāḥ
8. Those whose minds were always convinced, thinking, 'There are no such men in the world (loka),' these Pāṇḍavas (pāṇḍavāḥ) will now realize their true self (ātman) to be fruitless, like barren sesame seeds, in this adversity.
अयं हि वासोदय ईदृशानां मनस्विनां कौरव मा भवेद्वः ।
अदीक्षितानामजिनानि यद्वद्बलीयसां पश्यत पाण्डवानाम् ॥९॥
9. ayaṁ hi vāsodaya īdṛśānāṁ; manasvināṁ kaurava mā bhavedvaḥ ,
adīkṣitānāmajināni yadva;dbalīyasāṁ paśyata pāṇḍavānām.
9. ayam hi vāsodayaḥ īdṛśānām manasvinām kaurava mā bhavet
vaḥ adīkṣitānām ajināni yadvat balīyasām paśyata pāṇḍavānām
9. Indeed, O Kaurava (kaurava), may this situation—the wearing of such (simple) garments by high-minded men (manasvinām)—not befall you! Behold the powerful Pāṇḍavas (pāṇḍavānām), who are now (wearing) animal skins (ajināni) just like the uninitiated (adīkṣitānām)!
महाप्राज्ञः सोमको यज्ञसेनः कन्यां पाञ्चालीं पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रदाय ।
अकार्षीद्वै दुष्कृतं नेह सन्ति क्लीबाः पार्थाः पतयो याज्ञसेन्याः ॥१०॥
10. mahāprājñaḥ somako yajñasenaḥ; kanyāṁ pāñcālīṁ pāṇḍavebhyaḥ pradāya ,
akārṣīdvai duṣkṛtaṁ neha santi; klībāḥ pārthāḥ patayo yājñasenyāḥ.
10. mahāprājñaḥ somakaḥ yajñasenaḥ kanyāṃ
pāñcālīṃ pāṇḍavebhyaḥ pradāya
akārṣīt vai duṣkṛtaṃ na iha santi
klībāḥ pārthāḥ patayaḥ yājñasenyāḥ
10. The highly intelligent Somaka, Yajñasena, committed a wrong deed by giving his daughter Pāñcālī to the Pāṇḍavas. For Draupadī's (Yājñasenī's) husbands, the Pāṇḍavas, are certainly not impotent here.
सूक्ष्मान्प्रावारानजिनानि चोदितान्दृष्ट्वारण्ये निर्धनानप्रतिष्ठान् ।
कां त्वं प्रीतिं लप्स्यसे याज्ञसेनि पतिं वृणीष्व यमिहान्यमिच्छसि ॥११॥
11. sūkṣmānprāvārānajināni coditā;ndṛṣṭvāraṇye nirdhanānapratiṣṭhān ,
kāṁ tvaṁ prītiṁ lapsyase yājñaseni; patiṁ vṛṇīṣva yamihānyamicchasi.
11. sūkṣmān prāvārān ajināni coditān
dṛṣṭvā araṇye nirdhanān apratiṣṭhān
kām tvaṃ prītiṃ lapsyase yājñaseni
patim vṛṇīṣva yam iha anyam icchasi
11. O Draupadī (Yājñasenī), having seen the destitute and unsupported (Pāṇḍavas) in the forest, [who wear] fine garments and deerskins [as] prescribed, what satisfaction will you gain? Choose another husband, one whom you desire here.
एते हि सर्वे कुरवः समेताः क्षान्ता दान्ताः सुद्रविणोपपन्नाः ।
एषां वृणीष्वैकतमं पतित्वे न त्वां तपेत्कालविपर्ययोऽयम् ॥१२॥
12. ete hi sarve kuravaḥ sametāḥ; kṣāntā dāntāḥ sudraviṇopapannāḥ ,
eṣāṁ vṛṇīṣvaikatamaṁ patitve; na tvāṁ tapetkālaviparyayo'yam.
12. ete hi sarve kuravaḥ sametāḥ
kṣāntāḥ dāntāḥ sudraviṇopapannāḥ
eṣām vṛṇīṣva ekatamam patitve na
tvām tapet kālaviparyayaḥ ayam
12. Indeed, all these assembled Kurus are patient, self-controlled, and endowed with great wealth. Choose any one of them as a husband. Then, this adverse turn of events will not torment you.
यथाफलाः षण्ढतिला यथा चर्ममया मृगाः ।
तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे यथा काकयवा अपि ॥१३॥
13. yathāphalāḥ ṣaṇḍhatilā yathā carmamayā mṛgāḥ ,
tathaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve yathā kākayavā api.
13. yathāphalāḥ ṣaṇḍhatilāḥ yathā carmamayāḥ mṛgāḥ
tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve yathā kākayavāḥ api
13. Just as barren sesame seeds are fruitless, and just as deer made of hide are worthless, so too are all the Pāṇḍavas, even like crow's barley.
किं पाण्डवांस्त्वं पतितानुपास्से मोघः श्रमः षण्ढतिलानुपास्य ।
एवं नृशंसः परुषाणि पार्थानश्रावयद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः ॥१४॥
14. kiṁ pāṇḍavāṁstvaṁ patitānupāsse; moghaḥ śramaḥ ṣaṇḍhatilānupāsya ,
evaṁ nṛśaṁsaḥ paruṣāṇi pārthā;naśrāvayaddhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ.
14. kim pāṇḍavān tvam patitān upāsse
moghaḥ śramaḥ ṣaṇḍhatilān upāsya
| evam nṛśaṃsaḥ paruṣāṇi pārthān
aśrāvayat dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ
14. "Why do you attend to the fallen Pāṇḍavas? Your effort is in vain, like cultivating barren sesame seeds." Thus, the cruel son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra made the Pāṇḍavas listen to such harsh words.
तद्वै श्रुत्वा भीमसेनोऽत्यमर्षी निर्भर्त्स्योच्चैस्तं निगृह्यैव रोषात् ।
उवाचेदं सहसैवोपगम्य सिंहो यथा हैमवतः शृगालम् ॥१५॥
15. tadvai śrutvā bhīmaseno'tyamarṣī; nirbhartsyoccaistaṁ nigṛhyaiva roṣāt ,
uvācedaṁ sahasaivopagamya; siṁho yathā haimavataḥ śṛgālam.
15. tat vai śrutvā bhīmasenaḥ atyamarṣī
nirbhartsya uccaiḥ tam nigṛhya eva
roṣāt | uvāca idam sahasā eva upagamya
siṃhaḥ yathā haimavataḥ śṛgālam
15. Upon hearing that, the exceedingly wrathful Bhīmasena, having loudly rebuked and angrily seized him, quickly approached and spoke these words, just as a Himalayan lion (would speak to) a jackal.
भीमसेन उवाच ।
क्रूर पापजनैर्जुष्टमकृतार्थं प्रभाषसे ।
गान्धारविद्यया हि त्वं राजमध्ये विकत्थसे ॥१६॥
16. bhīmasena uvāca ,
krūra pāpajanairjuṣṭamakṛtārthaṁ prabhāṣase ,
gāndhāravidyayā hi tvaṁ rājamadhye vikatthase.
16. bhīmasena uvāca | krūra pāpajanaiḥ juṣṭam akṛtārtham
prabhāṣase | gāndhāravidyayā hi tvam rājamadhye vikatthase
16. Bhīmasena said: "O cruel one, you utter words that are meaningless and associated with wicked people. Indeed, you boast among kings by virtue of Gāndhārī's art."
यथा तुदसि मर्माणि वाक्शरैरिह नो भृशम् ।
तथा स्मारयिता तेऽहं कृन्तन्मर्माणि संयुगे ॥१७॥
17. yathā tudasi marmāṇi vākśarairiha no bhṛśam ,
tathā smārayitā te'haṁ kṛntanmarmāṇi saṁyuge.
17. yathā tudasi marmāṇi vākśaraiḥ iha naḥ bhṛśam |
tathā smārayitā te aham kṛntan marmāṇi saṃyuge
17. "Just as you intensely pierce our vital parts here with your word-arrows, so I will make you remember (this) by cutting your vital parts in battle."
ये च त्वामनुवर्तन्ते कामलोभवशानुगाः ।
गोप्तारः सानुबन्धांस्तान्नेष्यामि यमसादनम् ॥१८॥
18. ye ca tvāmanuvartante kāmalobhavaśānugāḥ ,
goptāraḥ sānubandhāṁstānneṣyāmi yamasādanam.
18. ye ca tvām anuvartante kāmalobhavaśānugāḥ
goptāraḥ sānubandhān tān neṣyāmi yamasādanam
18. And those who follow you, submitting to the sway of desire and greed, those protectors along with their kinsmen, I will lead them to the abode of Yama.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं ब्रुवाणमजिनैर्विवासितं दुःखाभिभूतं परिनृत्यति स्म ।
मध्ये कुरूणां धर्मनिबद्धमार्गं गौर्गौरिति स्माह्वयन्मुक्तलज्जः ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ bruvāṇamajinairvivāsitaṁ; duḥkhābhibhūtaṁ parinṛtyati sma ,
madhye kurūṇāṁ dharmanibaddhamārgaṁ; gaurgauriti smāhvayanmuktalajjaḥ.
19. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam bruvāṇam ajinaiḥ
vivāsitam duḥkha abhibhūtam parinṛtyati
sma madhye kurūṇām dharmanibaddhamārgam
gauḥ gauḥ iti sma āhvayan muktalajjaḥ
19. Vaiśampāyana said: In the midst of the Kurus, one who was shameless, dancing around, called out 'Cow! Cow!' to him who was speaking thus, who had been stripped of his deer-skins, was overwhelmed by sorrow, and whose conduct was bound by natural law (dharma).
भीमसेन उवाच ।
नृशंसं परुषं क्रूरं शक्यं दुःशासन त्वया ।
निकृत्या हि धनं लब्ध्वा को विकत्थितुमर्हति ॥२०॥
20. bhīmasena uvāca ,
nṛśaṁsaṁ paruṣaṁ krūraṁ śakyaṁ duḥśāsana tvayā ,
nikṛtyā hi dhanaṁ labdhvā ko vikatthitumarhati.
20. bhīmasena uvāca nṛśaṁsaṁ paruṣaṁ krūraṁ śakyaṁ duḥśāsana
tvayā nikṛtyā hi dhanaṁ labdhvā kaḥ vikatthitum arhati
20. Bhīmasena said: 'Such a cruel, harsh, and savage act is indeed possible for you, Duḥśāsana. For who, having obtained wealth through deceit, is worthy of boasting?'
मा ह स्म सुकृताँल्लोकान्गच्छेत्पार्थो वृकोदरः ।
यदि वक्षसि भित्त्वा ते न पिबेच्छोणितं रणे ॥२१॥
21. mā ha sma sukṛtāँllokāngacchetpārtho vṛkodaraḥ ,
yadi vakṣasi bhittvā te na pibecchoṇitaṁ raṇe.
21. mā ha sma sukṛtān lokān gacchet pārthaḥ vṛkodaraḥ
yadi vakṣasi bhittvā te na pibet śoṇitaṁ raṇe
21. May I, Pārtha Vṛkodara (Bhīmasena), certainly not attain the worlds of good deeds, if I do not drink your blood in battle after tearing open your chest!
धार्तराष्ट्रान्रणे हत्वा मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ।
शमं गन्तास्मि नचिरात्सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि वः ॥२२॥
22. dhārtarāṣṭrānraṇe hatvā miṣatāṁ sarvadhanvinām ,
śamaṁ gantāsmi nacirātsatyametadbravīmi vaḥ.
22. dhārtarāṣṭrān raṇe hatvā miṣatām sarvadhanvinām
śamam gantā asmi na cirāt satyam etat bravīmi vaḥ
22. Having killed the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in battle, while all the archers are watching, I shall very soon attain peace (śama). I speak this truth to you all.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्य राजा सिंहगतेः सखेलं दुर्योधनो भीमसेनस्य हर्षात् ।
गतिं स्वगत्यानुचकार मन्दो निर्गच्छतां पाण्डवानां सभायाः ॥२३॥
23. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasya rājā siṁhagateḥ sakhelaṁ; duryodhano bhīmasenasya harṣāt ,
gatiṁ svagatyānucakāra mando; nirgacchatāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ sabhāyāḥ.
23. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tasya rājā siṃhagateḥ
sakhelam duryodhanaḥ bhīmasenasya
harṣāt gatim svagatyā anucakāra
mandaḥ nirgacchatām pāṇḍavānām sabhāyāḥ
23. Vaiśampāyana said: King Duryodhana, being dull-witted, joyfully and playfully imitated the lion-like gait of Bhīmasena with his own walk, as the Pāṇḍavas were departing from the assembly.
नैतावता कृतमित्यब्रवीत्तं वृकोदरः संनिवृत्तार्धकायः ।
शीघ्रं हि त्वा निहतं सानुबन्धं संस्मार्याहं प्रतिवक्ष्यामि मूढ ॥२४॥
24. naitāvatā kṛtamityabravīttaṁ; vṛkodaraḥ saṁnivṛttārdhakāyaḥ ,
śīghraṁ hi tvā nihataṁ sānubandhaṁ; saṁsmāryāhaṁ prativakṣyāmi mūḍha.
24. na etāvatā kṛtam iti abravīt tam
vṛkodaraḥ saṃnivṛttārdhakāyaḥ
śīghram hi tvā nihatam sānubandham
saṃsmārya aham prativakṣyāmi mūḍha
24. "This is not enough accomplished!" thus spoke Vṛkodara (Bhīma), with half his body turned back. "Indeed, O fool, I shall quickly respond to you after I have ensured that you and your kinsmen are slain."
एतत्समीक्ष्यात्मनि चावमानं नियम्य मन्युं बलवान्स मानी ।
राजानुगः संसदि कौरवाणां विनिष्क्रमन्वाक्यमुवाच भीमः ॥२५॥
25. etatsamīkṣyātmani cāvamānaṁ; niyamya manyuṁ balavānsa mānī ,
rājānugaḥ saṁsadi kauravāṇāṁ; viniṣkramanvākyamuvāca bhīmaḥ.
25. etat samīkṣya ātmani ca avamānam
niyamya manyum balavān saḥ mānī
rājānugaḥ saṃsadi kauravāṇām
viniṣkraman vākyam uvāca bhīmaḥ
25. Perceiving this insult to himself (ātman), the powerful and proud Bhīma, restraining his anger (manyu), then spoke words as he was departing from the assembly of the Kauravas, following the king.
अहं दुर्योधनं हन्ता कर्णं हन्ता धनंजयः ।
शकुनिं चाक्षकितवं सहदेवो हनिष्यति ॥२६॥
26. ahaṁ duryodhanaṁ hantā karṇaṁ hantā dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
śakuniṁ cākṣakitavaṁ sahadevo haniṣyati.
26. aham duryodhanam hantā karṇam hantā dhanaṃjayaḥ
śakunim ca akṣakitavam sahadevaḥ haniṣyati
26. I will kill Duryodhana, Dhananjaya will kill Karna, and Sahadeva will kill Shakuni, the expert dice-player.
इदं च भूयो वक्ष्यामि सभामध्ये बृहद्वचः ।
सत्यं देवाः करिष्यन्ति यन्नो युद्धं भविष्यति ॥२७॥
27. idaṁ ca bhūyo vakṣyāmi sabhāmadhye bṛhadvacaḥ ,
satyaṁ devāḥ kariṣyanti yanno yuddhaṁ bhaviṣyati.
27. idam ca bhūyaḥ vakṣyāmi sabhāmadhye bṛhat vacaḥ
satyam devāḥ kariṣyanti yat naḥ yuddham bhaviṣyati
27. And I will declare this mighty statement again in this assembly: the gods will surely make true that our war will take place.
सुयोधनमिमं पापं हन्तास्मि गदया युधि ।
शिरः पादेन चास्याहमधिष्ठास्यामि भूतले ॥२८॥
28. suyodhanamimaṁ pāpaṁ hantāsmi gadayā yudhi ,
śiraḥ pādena cāsyāhamadhiṣṭhāsyāmi bhūtale.
28. suyodhanam imam pāpam hantā asmi gadayā yudhi
śiraḥ pādena ca asya aham adhiṣṭhāsyāmi bhūtale
28. I will kill this sinful Suyodhana in battle with my mace. And I will place my foot upon his head on the ground.
वाक्यशूरस्य चैवास्य परुषस्य दुरात्मनः ।
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पातास्मि मृगराडिव ॥२९॥
29. vākyaśūrasya caivāsya paruṣasya durātmanaḥ ,
duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṁ pātāsmi mṛgarāḍiva.
29. vākyaśūrasya ca eva asya paruṣasya durātmanaḥ
duḥśāsanasya rudhiram pātā asmi mṛgarāṭ iva
29. Indeed, I will drink the blood of this Duhshasana—who is valorous only in words, harsh, and evil-minded—just like a king of beasts (mṛgarāṭ).
अर्जुन उवाच ।
नैव वाचा व्यवसितं भीम विज्ञायते सताम् ।
इतश्चतुर्दशे वर्षे द्रष्टारो यद्भविष्यति ॥३०॥
30. arjuna uvāca ,
naiva vācā vyavasitaṁ bhīma vijñāyate satām ,
itaścaturdaśe varṣe draṣṭāro yadbhaviṣyati.
30. arjuna uvāca na eva vācā vyavasitam bhīma vijñāyate
satām itaḥ caturdaśe varṣe draṣṭāraḥ yat bhaviṣyati
30. Arjuna said: "Bhima, the settled determination of virtuous people is not understood merely by their words. From now, in the fourteenth year, they will directly observe what will come to pass."
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्च दुरात्मनः ।
दुःशासनचतुर्थानां भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥३१॥
31. duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneśca durātmanaḥ ,
duḥśāsanacaturthānāṁ bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam.

31. The earth will drink the blood of Duryodhana, Karna, and the wicked (durātman) Śakuni, as well as of those for whom Duḥśāsana is the fourth.
असूयितारं वक्तारं प्रस्रष्टारं दुरात्मनाम् ।
भीमसेन नियोगात्ते हन्ताहं कर्णमाहवे ॥३२॥
32. asūyitāraṁ vaktāraṁ prasraṣṭāraṁ durātmanām ,
bhīmasena niyogātte hantāhaṁ karṇamāhave.
32. asūyitāram vaktāram prasraṣṭāram durātmanām
bhīmasena niyogāt te hantā aham karṇam āhave
32. Bhimasena, by your command, I will slay Karna in battle — him who is envious, speaks harshly, and is an instigator of the wicked (durātman).
अर्जुनः प्रतिजानीते भीमस्य प्रियकाम्यया ।
कर्णं कर्णानुगांश्चैव रणे हन्तास्मि पत्रिभिः ॥३३॥
33. arjunaḥ pratijānīte bhīmasya priyakāmyayā ,
karṇaṁ karṇānugāṁścaiva raṇe hantāsmi patribhiḥ.

karṇānugān ca eva raṇe hantā asmi patribhiḥ
33. Arjuna pledges, desiring to please Bhima: "Indeed, I will slay Karna and his followers in battle with my arrows."
ये चान्ये प्रतियोत्स्यन्ति बुद्धिमोहेन मां नृपाः ।
तांश्च सर्वाञ्शितैर्बाणैर्नेतास्मि यमसादनम् ॥३४॥
34. ye cānye pratiyotsyanti buddhimohena māṁ nṛpāḥ ,
tāṁśca sarvāñśitairbāṇairnetāsmi yamasādanam.
34. ye ca anye pratiyotsyanti buddhimomena mām nṛpāḥ
tān ca sarvān śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ netā asmi yamasādanam
34. And those other kings who will fight against me due to the delusion of their intellect, I will lead all of them to the abode of Yama with sharp arrows.
चलेद्धि हिमवान्स्थानान्निष्प्रभः स्याद्दिवाकरः ।
शैत्यं सोमात्प्रणश्येत मत्सत्यं विचलेद्यदि ॥३५॥
35. caleddhi himavānsthānānniṣprabhaḥ syāddivākaraḥ ,
śaityaṁ somātpraṇaśyeta matsatyaṁ vicaledyadi.
35. calet hi himavān sthānāt niṣprabhaḥ syāt divākaraḥ
śaityam somāt praṇaśyet mama satyam vicalet yadi
35. Indeed, even if the Himalayas were to move from their place, the sun were to lose its radiance, and coldness were to vanish from the moon, my word (satyam) would still not waver.
न प्रदास्यति चेद्राज्यमितो वर्षे चतुर्दशे ।
दुर्योधनो हि सत्कृत्य सत्यमेतद्भविष्यति ॥३६॥
36. na pradāsyati cedrājyamito varṣe caturdaśe ,
duryodhano hi satkṛtya satyametadbhaviṣyati.
36. na pradāsyati cet rājyam itaḥ varṣe caturdaśe
duryodhanaḥ hi satkṛtya satyam etat bhaviṣyati
36. If Duryodhana does not yield the kingdom even after these fourteen years, then indeed, after (we have) acted honorably, this (vow/prediction) will come true.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्तवति पार्थे तु श्रीमान्माद्रवतीसुतः ।
प्रगृह्य विपुलं बाहुं सहदेवः प्रतापवान् ॥३७॥
37. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktavati pārthe tu śrīmānmādravatīsutaḥ ,
pragṛhya vipulaṁ bāhuṁ sahadevaḥ pratāpavān.
37. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktavati pārthe tu śrīmān
mādrāvatīsutaḥ pragṛhya vipulam bāhum sahadevaḥ pratāpavān
37. Vaiśampāyana said: When Pārtha (Arjuna) had thus spoken, the glorious son of Mādrī (Sahadeva), full of valor, grasped his mighty arm.
सौबलस्य वधं प्रेप्सुरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
क्रोधसंरक्तनयनो निःश्वसन्निव पन्नगः ॥३८॥
38. saubalasya vadhaṁ prepsuridaṁ vacanamabravīt ,
krodhasaṁraktanayano niḥśvasanniva pannagaḥ.
38. saubalasya vadham prepsuḥ idam vacanam abravīt
krodhasaṃraktanayanaḥ niḥśvasan iva pannagaḥ
38. Desiring Saubala's death, he spoke these words, his eyes red with rage, hissing like a serpent.
अक्षान्यान्मन्यसे मूढ गान्धाराणां यशोहर ।
नैतेऽक्षा निशिता बाणास्त्वयैते समरे वृताः ॥३९॥
39. akṣānyānmanyase mūḍha gāndhārāṇāṁ yaśohara ,
naite'kṣā niśitā bāṇāstvayaite samare vṛtāḥ.
39. akṣān anyān manyase mūḍha gāndhārāṇām yaśohara na
ete akṣāḥ niśitāḥ bāṇāḥ tvayā ete samare vṛtāḥ
39. O foolish one, who steals the glory of the Gāndhāras, you consider these to be mere dice. These are not dice; rather, they are sharpened arrows, chosen by you for battle!
यथा चैवोक्तवान्भीमस्त्वामुद्दिश्य सबान्धवम् ।
कर्ताहं कर्मणस्तस्य कुरु कार्याणि सर्वशः ॥४०॥
40. yathā caivoktavānbhīmastvāmuddiśya sabāndhavam ,
kartāhaṁ karmaṇastasya kuru kāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ.
40. yathā ca eva uktavān bhīmaḥ tvām uddiśya sabāndhavam
kartā aham karmaṇaḥ tasya kuru kāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ
40. Just as Bhīma spoke, addressing you and your kinsmen, saying, "I will be the doer of that (terrible) deed (karma)," now you should perform all your tasks completely (sarvaśaḥ).
हन्तास्मि तरसा युद्धे त्वां विक्रम्य सबान्धवम् ।
यदि स्थास्यसि संग्रामे क्षत्रधर्मेण सौबल ॥४१॥
41. hantāsmi tarasā yuddhe tvāṁ vikramya sabāndhavam ,
yadi sthāsyasi saṁgrāme kṣatradharmeṇa saubala.
41. hantā asmi tarasā yuddhe tvām vikramya sabāndhavam
yadi sthāsyasi saṅgrāme kṣatradharmeṇa saubala
41. O Saubala, I will surely kill you and your kinsmen with force in battle, after having shown valor, if you dare to stand in combat according to the code of a warrior (kṣatra-dharma).
सहदेववचः श्रुत्वा नकुलोऽपि विशां पते ।
दर्शनीयतमो नॄणामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥४२॥
42. sahadevavacaḥ śrutvā nakulo'pi viśāṁ pate ,
darśanīyatamo nṝṇāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
42. sahadevavacaḥ śrutvā nakulaḥ api viśām pate
darśanīyatamaḥ nṝṇām idam vacanam abravīt
42. O lord of the people, having heard Sahadeva's words, Nakula, the most handsome among men, also spoke these words.
सुतेयं यज्ञसेनस्य द्यूतेऽस्मिन्धृतराष्ट्रजैः ।
यैर्वाचः श्राविता रूक्षाः स्थितैर्दुर्योधनप्रिये ॥४३॥
43. suteyaṁ yajñasenasya dyūte'smindhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ ,
yairvācaḥ śrāvitā rūkṣāḥ sthitairduryodhanapriye.
43. sutā iyam yajñasenasya dyūte asmin dhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ
yaiḥ vācaḥ śrāvitāḥ rūkṣāḥ sthitaiḥ duryodhanapriye
43. In this game of dice, which was dear to Duryodhana, this daughter of Drupada (Yajñasena) was made to hear harsh words by the sons of Dhritarashtra, who stood there (uttering them).
तान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्दुर्वृत्तान्मुमूर्षून्कालचोदितान् ।
दर्शयिष्यामि भूयिष्ठमहं वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥४४॥
44. tāndhārtarāṣṭrāndurvṛttānmumūrṣūnkālacoditān ,
darśayiṣyāmi bhūyiṣṭhamahaṁ vaivasvatakṣayam.
44. tān dhārtarāṣṭrān durvṛttān mumūrṣūn kālacoditān
darśayiṣyāmi bhūyiṣṭham aham vaivasvatakṣayam
44. I will show those wicked sons of Dhritarashtra, who are doomed to die and impelled by time (fate), the ultimate realm of Yama (Vaivasvata).
निदेशाद्धर्मराजस्य द्रौपद्याः पदवीं चरन् ।
निर्धार्तराष्ट्रां पृथिवीं कर्तास्मि नचिरादिव ॥४५॥
45. nideśāddharmarājasya draupadyāḥ padavīṁ caran ,
nirdhārtarāṣṭrāṁ pṛthivīṁ kartāsmi nacirādiva.
45. nideśāt dharmarājasya draupadyāḥ padavīm caran
nirdhātarāṣṭrām pṛthivīm kartā asmi nacirāt iva
45. Following Draupadi's path (seeking vengeance for her), by the command of the king of natural law (dharma), Yudhishthira, I will very soon make the earth devoid of Dhritarashtra's sons.
एवं ते पुरुषव्याघ्राः सर्वे व्यायतबाहवः ।
प्रतिज्ञा बहुलाः कृत्वा धृतराष्ट्रमुपागमन् ॥४६॥
46. evaṁ te puruṣavyāghrāḥ sarve vyāyatabāhavaḥ ,
pratijñā bahulāḥ kṛtvā dhṛtarāṣṭramupāgaman.
46. evam te puruṣavyāghrāḥ sarve vyāyatabāhavaḥ
pratijñāḥ bahulāḥ kṛtvā dhṛtarāṣṭram upāgaman
46. Thus, all those best of men (puruṣavyāghra), with mighty arms, having made many vows, approached Dhritarashtra.
