तस्यां निशायां व्युष्टायां द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
स्वान्यनीकानि सर्वाणि प्राक्रामद्व्यूहितुं ततः ॥१॥

tasyāṁ niśāyāṁ vyuṣṭāyāṁ droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,

1. Sanjaya said: When that night dawned, Drona, the foremost among all weapon-bearers, then proceeded to arrange all his own armies into battle formations.
शूराणां गर्जतां राजन्संक्रुद्धानाममर्षिणाम् ।
श्रूयन्ते स्म गिरश्चित्राः परस्परवधैषिणाम् ॥२॥
2. śūrāṇāṁ garjatāṁ rājansaṁkruddhānāmamarṣiṇām ,
śrūyante sma giraścitrāḥ parasparavadhaiṣiṇām.

2. O King, the diverse cries of the roaring, greatly enraged, and intolerant heroes, who were intent on killing each other, could be heard.
विस्फार्य च धनूंष्याजौ ज्याः करैः परिमृज्य च ।
विनिःश्वसन्तः प्राक्रोशन्क्वेदानीं स धनंजयः ॥३॥
3. visphārya ca dhanūṁṣyājau jyāḥ karaiḥ parimṛjya ca ,
viniḥśvasantaḥ prākrośankvedānīṁ sa dhanaṁjayaḥ.

3. Stretching their bows for battle, and stroking the bowstrings with their hands, they sighed and cried out, 'Where is that Arjuna now?'
विकोशान्सुत्सरूनन्ये कृतधारान्समाहितान् ।
पीतानाकाशसंकाशानसीन्केचिच्च चिक्षिपुः ॥४॥
4. vikośānsutsarūnanye kṛtadhārānsamāhitān ,
pītānākāśasaṁkāśānasīnkecicca cikṣipuḥ.

4. Some warriors drew and hurled swords that were well-handled, sharpened, and ready, gleaming golden like the sky. Others also (did the same).
चरन्तस्त्वसिमार्गांश्च धनुर्मार्गांश्च शिक्षया ।
संग्राममनसः शूरा दृश्यन्ते स्म सहस्रशः ॥५॥
5. carantastvasimārgāṁśca dhanurmārgāṁśca śikṣayā ,
saṁgrāmamanasaḥ śūrā dṛśyante sma sahasraśaḥ.
5. carantaḥ tu asimārgān ca dhanurmārgān ca śikṣayā
saṃgrāmamanasaḥ śūrāḥ dṛśyante sma sahasraśaḥ

5. Thousands of brave warriors, their minds set on battle, were seen practicing sword techniques and bow maneuvers through instruction.
सघण्टाश्चन्दनादिग्धाः स्वर्णवज्रविभूषिताः ।
समुत्क्षिप्य गदाश्चान्ये पर्यपृच्छन्त पाण्डवम् ॥६॥
6. saghaṇṭāścandanādigdhāḥ svarṇavajravibhūṣitāḥ ,
samutkṣipya gadāścānye paryapṛcchanta pāṇḍavam.
6. saghaṇṭāḥ candanādigdhāḥ svarṇavajravibhūṣitāḥ
samutkṣipya gadāḥ ca anye paryapṛcchanta pāṇḍavam

6. And others, having lifted high their maces adorned with bells, smeared with sandalwood paste, and embellished with gold and diamonds, questioned the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna).
अन्ये बलमदोन्मत्ताः परिघैर्बाहुशालिनः ।
चक्रुः संबाधमाकाशमुच्छ्रितेन्द्रध्वजोपमैः ॥७॥
7. anye balamadonmattāḥ parighairbāhuśālinaḥ ,
cakruḥ saṁbādhamākāśamucchritendradhvajopamaiḥ.

saṃbādham ākāśam ucchritendradhvajo pamaiḥ

7. Others, mighty-armed and maddened by their strength, made the sky congested with maces that resembled tall Indra's banners.
नानाप्रहरणैश्चान्ये विचित्रस्रगलंकृताः ।
संग्राममनसः शूरास्तत्र तत्र व्यवस्थिताः ॥८॥
8. nānāpraharaṇaiścānye vicitrasragalaṁkṛtāḥ ,
saṁgrāmamanasaḥ śūrāstatra tatra vyavasthitāḥ.
8. nānāpraharaṇaiḥ ca anye vicitrasragalaṅkṛtāḥ
saṅgrāmamanasaḥ śūrāḥ tatra tatra vyavasthitāḥ
8. ca anye nānāpraharaṇaiḥ vicitrasragalaṅkṛtāḥ

8. And other heroes, adorned with various weapons and colorful garlands, their minds set on battle, were positioned here and there.
क्वार्जुनः क्व च गोविन्दः क्व च मानी वृकोदरः ।
क्व च ते सुहृदस्तेषामाह्वयन्तो रणे तदा ॥९॥
9. kvārjunaḥ kva ca govindaḥ kva ca mānī vṛkodaraḥ ,
kva ca te suhṛdasteṣāmāhvayanto raṇe tadā.
9. kva arjunaḥ kva ca govindaḥ kva ca mānī vṛkodaraḥ
kva ca te suhṛdaḥ teṣām āhvayantaḥ raṇe tadā
9. tadā raṇe kva arjunaḥ ca kva govindaḥ ca kva mānī
vṛkodaraḥ ca kva te suhṛdaḥ teṣām āhvayantaḥ
9. "Where is Arjuna? Where is Govinda? And where is the proud Vṛkodara (Bhīma)? And where are their friends?" Thus, at that time, they were calling out challenges to them on the battlefield.
ततः शङ्खमुपाध्माय त्वरयन्वाजिनः स्वयम् ।
इतस्ततस्तान्रचयन्द्रोणश्चरति वेगितः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ śaṅkhamupādhmāya tvarayanvājinaḥ svayam ,
itastatastānracayandroṇaścarati vegitaḥ.
10. tataḥ śaṅkham upādhmāya tvarayan vājināḥ svayam
itastataḥ tān racayan droṇaḥ carati vegitaḥ
10. tataḥ droṇaḥ svayam śaṅkham upādhmāya vājināḥ

10. Then Droṇa himself, having blown the conch and urging his horses, moves swiftly, arranging his troops here and there.
तेष्वनीकेषु सर्वेषु स्थितेष्वाहवनन्दिषु ।
भारद्वाजो महाराज जयद्रथमथाब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. teṣvanīkeṣu sarveṣu sthiteṣvāhavanandiṣu ,
bhāradvājo mahārāja jayadrathamathābravīt.
11. teṣu anīkeṣu sarveṣu sthiteṣu āhavanandiṣu
bhāradvājaḥ mahārāja jayadratham atha abravīt
11. mahārāja atha bhāradvājaḥ teṣu sarveṣu

11. O great king, then Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), amidst all those armies stationed and delighting in battle, spoke to Jayadratha.
त्वं चैव सौमदत्तिश्च कर्णश्चैव महारथः ।
अश्वत्थामा च शल्यश्च वृषसेनः कृपस्तथा ॥१२॥
12. tvaṁ caiva saumadattiśca karṇaścaiva mahārathaḥ ,
aśvatthāmā ca śalyaśca vṛṣasenaḥ kṛpastathā.
12. tvam ca eva saumadattiḥ ca karṇaḥ ca eva mahārathaḥ
aśvatthāmā ca śalyaḥ ca vṛṣasenaḥ kṛpaḥ tathā
12. tvam ca eva saumadattiḥ ca karṇaḥ eva mahārathaḥ
ca aśvatthāmā ca śalyaḥ ca vṛṣasenaḥ kṛpaḥ tathā
12. You, Saumadatti, and Karṇa - the great charioteer (mahāratha) - along with Aśvatthāmā, Śalya, Vṛṣasena, and Kṛpa, also [are to guard Jayadratha].
शतं चाश्वसहस्राणां रथानामयुतानि षट् ।
द्विरदानां प्रभिन्नानां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥१३॥
13. śataṁ cāśvasahasrāṇāṁ rathānāmayutāni ṣaṭ ,
dviradānāṁ prabhinnānāṁ sahasrāṇi caturdaśa.
13. śatam ca aśvasahasrāṇām rathānām ayutāni ṣaṭ
dviradānām prabhinnānām sahasrāṇi caturdaśa
13. ca śatam aśvasahasrāṇām ṣaṭ ayutāni rathānām
caturdaśa sahasrāṇi prabhinnānām dviradānām
13. And a hundred thousand horses, sixty thousand chariots, and fourteen thousand furious (prabhinna) elephants...
पदातीनां सहस्राणि दंशितान्येकविंशतिः ।
गव्यूतिषु त्रिमात्रेषु मामनासाद्य तिष्ठत ॥१४॥
14. padātīnāṁ sahasrāṇi daṁśitānyekaviṁśatiḥ ,
gavyūtiṣu trimātreṣu māmanāsādya tiṣṭhata.
14. padātīnām sahasrāṇi daṃśitāni ekaviṃśatiḥ
gavyūtiṣu trimātreṣu mām anāsādya tiṣṭhata
14. ekaviṃśatiḥ sahasrāṇi daṃśitāni padātīnām
mām anāsādya trimātreṣu gavyūtiṣu tiṣṭhata
14. And twenty-one thousand armored foot-soldiers [are there]. You all must remain at a distance of three leagues without approaching my position.
तत्रस्थं त्वां न संसोढुं शक्ता देवाः सवासवाः ।
किं पुनः पाण्डवाः सर्वे समाश्वसिहि सैन्धव ॥१५॥
15. tatrasthaṁ tvāṁ na saṁsoḍhuṁ śaktā devāḥ savāsavāḥ ,
kiṁ punaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve samāśvasihi saindhava.
15. tatrastham tvām na saṃsoḍhum śaktāḥ devāḥ savāsavāḥ
kim punaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve samāśvasihi saindhava
15. saindhava,
savāsavāḥ devāḥ api tvām tatrastham saṃsoḍhum na śaktāḥ,
kim punaḥ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ? samāśvasihi.
15. O King of Sindhu (saindhava), even the gods (deva), along with Indra, are unable to withstand you stationed there; how much less so then all the Pāṇḍavas? Therefore, take courage!
एवमुक्तः समाश्वस्तः सिन्धुराजो जयद्रथः ।
संप्रायात्सह गान्धारैर्वृतस्तैश्च महारथैः ।
वर्मिभिः सादिभिर्यत्तैः प्रासपाणिभिरास्थितैः ॥१६॥
16. evamuktaḥ samāśvastaḥ sindhurājo jayadrathaḥ ,
saṁprāyātsaha gāndhārairvṛtastaiśca mahārathaiḥ ,
varmibhiḥ sādibhiryattaiḥ prāsapāṇibhirāsthitaiḥ.
16. evam uktaḥ samāśvastaḥ sindhurājaḥ
jayadrathaḥ samprāyāt saha gāndhāraiḥ
vṛtaḥ taiḥ ca mahārathaiḥ varmibhiḥ
sādibhiḥ yattaiḥ prāsapāṇibhiḥ āsthitaiḥ
16. evam uktaḥ,
samāśvastaḥ sindhurājaḥ jayadrathaḥ,
saha gāndhāraiḥ,
taiḥ ca mahārathaiḥ,
varmibhiḥ sādibhiḥ yattaiḥ prāsapāṇibhiḥ āsthitaiḥ vṛtaḥ,
samprāyāt.
16. Thus addressed, Jayadratha, the King of Sindhu, was reassured. He then set out, accompanied by the Gāndhāras and surrounded by those great charioteers, as well as by armored, vigilant horsemen who were stationed with spears in hand.
चामरापीडिनः सर्वे जाम्बूनदविभूषिताः ।
जयद्रथस्य राजेन्द्र हयाः साधुप्रवाहिनः ।
ते चैव सप्तसाहस्रा द्विसाहस्राश्च सैन्धवाः ॥१७॥
17. cāmarāpīḍinaḥ sarve jāmbūnadavibhūṣitāḥ ,
jayadrathasya rājendra hayāḥ sādhupravāhinaḥ ,
te caiva saptasāhasrā dvisāhasrāśca saindhavāḥ.
17. cāmarāpīḍinaḥ sarve jāmbūnadavibhūṣitāḥ
jayadrathasya rājendra hayāḥ
sādhuprāvāhinaḥ te ca eva

17. rājendra,
jayadrathasya sarve hayāḥ cāmarāpīḍinaḥ,
jāmbūnadavibhūṣitāḥ,
sādhuprāvāhinaḥ (āsan).
te ca eva saptasāhasrāḥ,
ca dvisāhasrāḥ saindhavāḥ (api āsan).
17. O king of kings (rājedra), all of Jayadratha's horses (haya), adorned with yak-tail crests (cāmara) and gold (jāmbūnada), were swift-moving. There were indeed seven thousand of these, along with two thousand horses of Sindhu breed (saindhava).
मत्तानामधिरूढानां हस्त्यारोहैर्विशारदैः ।
नागानां भीमरूपाणां वर्मिणां रौद्रकर्मिणाम् ॥१८॥
18. mattānāmadhirūḍhānāṁ hastyārohairviśāradaiḥ ,
nāgānāṁ bhīmarūpāṇāṁ varmiṇāṁ raudrakarmiṇām.
18. mattānām adhirūḍhānām hastyārohaiḥ viśāradaiḥ
nāgānām bhīmarūpāṇām varmiṇām raudrakarmiṇām
18. viśāradaiḥ hastyārohaiḥ,
mattānām adhirūḍhānām bhīmarūpāṇām varmiṇām raudrakarmiṇām nāgānām (saṅghaḥ āsīt).
18. Skilled elephant riders were present, mounted upon maddened, terrifying-looking, armored, and fiercely-acting elephants.
अध्यर्धेन सहस्रेण पुत्रो दुर्मर्षणस्तव ।
अग्रतः सर्वसैन्यानां योत्स्यमानो व्यवस्थितः ॥१९॥
19. adhyardhena sahasreṇa putro durmarṣaṇastava ,
agrataḥ sarvasainyānāṁ yotsyamāno vyavasthitaḥ.
19. adhyardhena sahasreṇa putraḥ durmarṣaṇaḥ tava
agrataḥ sarvasainyānām yotsyamānaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
19. tava putraḥ durmarṣaṇaḥ adhyardhena sahasreṇa
sarvasainyānām agrataḥ yotsyamānaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
19. Your son Durmarṣaṇa stands positioned at the forefront of all the armies with fifteen hundred warriors, ready to fight.
ततो दुःशासनश्चैव विकर्णश्च तवात्मजौ ।
सिन्धुराजार्थसिद्ध्यर्थमग्रानीके व्यवस्थितौ ॥२०॥
20. tato duḥśāsanaścaiva vikarṇaśca tavātmajau ,
sindhurājārthasiddhyarthamagrānīke vyavasthitau.
20. tataḥ duḥśāsanaḥ ca eva vikarṇaḥ ca tava ātmajau
sindhurājārthasiddhyartham agrānīke vyavasthitau
20. tataḥ tava ātmajau duḥśāsanaḥ ca eva vikarṇaḥ ca
sindhurājārthasiddhyartham agrānīke vyavasthitau
20. Then, your two sons, Duḥśāsana and Vikarṇa, are positioned in the vanguard to achieve the objective of the Sindhu king.
दीर्घो द्वादशगव्यूतिः पश्चार्धे पञ्च विस्तृतः ।
व्यूहः स चक्रशकटो भारद्वाजेन निर्मितः ॥२१॥
21. dīrgho dvādaśagavyūtiḥ paścārdhe pañca vistṛtaḥ ,
vyūhaḥ sa cakraśakaṭo bhāradvājena nirmitaḥ.
21. dīrghaḥ dvādaśagavyūtiḥ paścārdhe pañca vistṛtaḥ
vyūhaḥ saḥ cakrasakaṭaḥ bhāradvājena nirmitaḥ
21. saḥ vyūhaḥ dvādaśagavyūtiḥ dīrghaḥ paścārdhe
pañca vistṛtaḥ cakrasakaṭaḥ bhāradvājena nirmitaḥ
21. That military array (vyūha), twelve gavūtis long and five [gavūtis] wide in the rear half, resembling a wheel and a cart, was constructed by Bhāradvāja (Droṇa).
नानानृपतिभिर्वीरैस्तत्र तत्र व्यवस्थितैः ।
रथाश्वगजपत्त्योघैर्द्रोणेन विहितः स्वयम् ॥२२॥
22. nānānṛpatibhirvīraistatra tatra vyavasthitaiḥ ,
rathāśvagajapattyoghairdroṇena vihitaḥ svayam.
22. nānānṛpatibhiḥ vīraiḥ tatra tatra vyavasthitaiḥ
rathāśvagajapattyoghaiḥ droṇena vihitaḥ svayam
22. droṇena svayam nānānṛpatibhiḥ vīraiḥ tatra tatra
vyavasthitaiḥ rathāśvagajapattyoghaiḥ ca vihitaḥ [vyūhaḥ]
22. This [array] was personally arranged by Droṇa, with various brave kings positioned throughout and supported by multitudes of chariots, horses, elephants, and foot-soldiers.
पश्चार्धे तस्य पद्मस्तु गर्भव्यूहः सुदुर्भिदः ।
सूची पद्मस्य मध्यस्थो गूढो व्यूहः पुनः कृतः ॥२३॥
23. paścārdhe tasya padmastu garbhavyūhaḥ sudurbhidaḥ ,
sūcī padmasya madhyastho gūḍho vyūhaḥ punaḥ kṛtaḥ.
23. paścārdhe tasya padmaḥ tu garbhavyuhaḥ sudurbhidaḥ
sūcī padmasya madhyasthaḥ gūḍhaḥ vyuhaḥ punaḥ kṛtaḥ
23. tasya paścārdhe padmaḥ tu garbhavyuhaḥ sudurbhidaḥ kṛtaḥ.
punaḥ padmasya madhyasthaḥ gūḍhaḥ sūcī vyuhaḥ kṛtaḥ.
23. In the latter half of that (main array), a lotus (padma) formation was arranged, which was an array within an array (garbhavyuha) and extremely difficult to penetrate. Furthermore, a hidden needle (sūcī) formation was positioned within the center of this lotus array.
एवमेतं महाव्यूहं व्यूह्य द्रोणो व्यवस्थितः ।
सूचीमुखे महेष्वासः कृतवर्मा व्यवस्थितः ॥२४॥
24. evametaṁ mahāvyūhaṁ vyūhya droṇo vyavasthitaḥ ,
sūcīmukhe maheṣvāsaḥ kṛtavarmā vyavasthitaḥ.
24. evam etam mahāvyūham vyūhya droṇaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
sūcīmukhe maheṣvāsaḥ kṛtavarmā vyavasthitaḥ
24. evam droṇaḥ etam mahāvyūham vyūhya vyavasthitaḥ.
sūcīmukhe maheṣvāsaḥ kṛtavarmā vyavasthitaḥ.
24. Having arranged this great formation in this manner, Droṇa was positioned. At the very front of the needle (sūcī) array, Kṛtavarmā, the great archer, was stationed.
अनन्तरं च काम्बोजो जलसंधश्च मारिष ।
दुर्योधनः सहामात्यस्तदनन्तरमेव च ॥२५॥
25. anantaraṁ ca kāmbojo jalasaṁdhaśca māriṣa ,
duryodhanaḥ sahāmātyastadanantarameva ca.
25. anantaram ca kāmbojaḥ jalasandhaḥ ca māriṣa
duryodhanaḥ sahamātyaḥ tadanantaram eva ca
25. māriṣa,
anantaram ca kāmbojaḥ ca jalasandhaḥ [āsīt].
tadanantaram eva ca duryodhanaḥ sahamātyaḥ [āsīt].
25. And next, O respected one (māriṣa), were Kambhoja and Jalasandha. Immediately following them was Duryodhana, along with his ministers.
ततः शतसहस्राणि योधानामनिवर्तिनाम् ।
व्यवस्थितानि सर्वाणि शकटे सूचिरक्षिणः ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ śatasahasrāṇi yodhānāmanivartinām ,
vyavasthitāni sarvāṇi śakaṭe sūcirakṣiṇaḥ.
26. tataḥ śatasahasrāṇi yodhānām anivartinām
vyavasthitāni sarvāṇi śakaṭe sūcirakṣiṇaḥ
26. tataḥ śakaṭe sūcirakṣiṇaḥ anivartinām yodhānām sarvāṇi śatasahasrāṇi vyavasthitāni [āsan].
26. Then, hundreds of thousands of unretreating warriors were all arrayed in the cart (śakaṭa) formation, serving as protectors of the needle (sūcī) array.
तेषां च पृष्ठतो राज बलेन महता वृतः ।
जयद्रथस्ततो राजन्सूचिपाशे व्यवस्थितः ॥२७॥
27. teṣāṁ ca pṛṣṭhato rāja balena mahatā vṛtaḥ ,
jayadrathastato rājansūcipāśe vyavasthitaḥ.
27. teṣām ca pṛṣṭhataḥ rāja balena mahatā vṛtaḥ
jayadrathaḥ tataḥ rājan sūcipāśe vyavasthitaḥ
27. rāja rājan teṣām pṛṣṭhataḥ ca mahatā balena
vṛtaḥ jayadrathaḥ tataḥ sūcipāśe vyavasthitaḥ
27. And behind them, O King, Jayadratha was then stationed in the needle-array (sūcipāśa), surrounded by a great army.
शकटस्य तु राजेन्द्र भारद्वाजो मुखे स्थितः ।
अनु तस्याभवद्भोजो जुगोपैनं ततः स्वयम् ॥२८॥
28. śakaṭasya tu rājendra bhāradvājo mukhe sthitaḥ ,
anu tasyābhavadbhojo jugopainaṁ tataḥ svayam.

28. But, O chief of kings, Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) was positioned at the front of the cart (śakaṭa) formation. Bhoja (Kṛtavarman) was behind him and then personally protected him.
श्वेतवर्माम्बरोष्णीषो व्यूढोरस्को महाभुजः ।
धनुर्विस्फारयन्द्रोणस्तस्थौ क्रुद्ध इवान्तकः ॥२९॥
29. śvetavarmāmbaroṣṇīṣo vyūḍhorasko mahābhujaḥ ,
dhanurvisphārayandroṇastasthau kruddha ivāntakaḥ.

29. Droṇa, wearing white armor, garments, and a turban, with a broad chest and powerful arms, stood stretching his bow, appearing like an enraged god of death (antaka).
पताकिनं शोणहयं वेदीकृष्णाजिनध्वजम् ।
द्रोणस्य रथमालोक्य प्रहृष्टाः कुरवोऽभवन् ॥३०॥
30. patākinaṁ śoṇahayaṁ vedīkṛṣṇājinadhvajam ,
droṇasya rathamālokya prahṛṣṭāḥ kuravo'bhavan.

30. Upon seeing Droṇa's chariot, which was adorned with banners, drawn by red horses, and bore a flag depicting a dark antelope hide on a sacrificial altar, the Kurus became overjoyed.
सिद्धचारणसंघानां विस्मयः सुमहानभूत् ।
द्रोणेन विहितं दृष्ट्वा व्यूहं क्षुब्धार्णवोपमम् ॥३१॥
31. siddhacāraṇasaṁghānāṁ vismayaḥ sumahānabhūt ,
droṇena vihitaṁ dṛṣṭvā vyūhaṁ kṣubdhārṇavopamam.

31. A very great astonishment arose among the hosts of Siddhas and Caraṇas upon seeing the battle formation arranged by Droṇa, which resembled a turbulent ocean.
सशैलसागरवनां नानाजनपदाकुलाम् ।
ग्रसेद्व्यूहः क्षितिं सर्वामिति भूतानि मेनिरे ॥३२॥
32. saśailasāgaravanāṁ nānājanapadākulām ,
grasedvyūhaḥ kṣitiṁ sarvāmiti bhūtāni menire.

vyūhaḥ kṣitim sarvām iti bhūtāni menire

32. All beings thought, 'This battle formation would devour the entire earth, with its mountains, oceans, and forests, and filled with various countries and peoples.'
बहुरथमनुजाश्वपत्तिनागं प्रतिभयनिस्वनमद्भुताभरूपम् ।
अहितहृदयभेदनं महद्वै शकटमवेक्ष्य कृतं ननन्द राजा ॥३३॥
33. bahurathamanujāśvapattināgaṁ; pratibhayanisvanamadbhutābharūpam ,
ahitahṛdayabhedanaṁ mahadvai; śakaṭamavekṣya kṛtaṁ nananda rājā.

33. The King indeed rejoiced upon seeing the great cart-formation (śakaṭa), which had been arranged with numerous chariots, men, horses, foot-soldiers, and elephants, and possessed a terrifying roar, a wondrous appearance, and was capable of piercing the hearts of enemies.
