सूत उवाच ।
गतमात्रं तु भर्तारं जरत्कारुरवेदयत् ।
भ्रातुस्त्वरितमागम्य यथातथ्यं तपोधन ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
gatamātraṁ tu bhartāraṁ jaratkāruravedayat ,
bhrātustvaritamāgamya yathātathyaṁ tapodhana.
1. sūtaḥ uvāca | gatamātram tu bhartāram jaratkāruḥ avedayat
| bhrātuḥ tvaritam āgamya yathātathyam tapodhana
1. Sūta said: O ascetic, as soon as her husband had departed, Jaratkāru quickly approached her brother and informed him of the actual situation.
ततः स भुजगश्रेष्ठः श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम् ।
उवाच भगिनीं दीनां तदा दीनतरः स्वयम् ॥२॥
2. tataḥ sa bhujagaśreṣṭhaḥ śrutvā sumahadapriyam ,
uvāca bhaginīṁ dīnāṁ tadā dīnataraḥ svayam.
2. tataḥ saḥ bhujagaśreṣṭhaḥ śrutvā sumahat apriyam
| uvāca bhaginīm dīnām tadā dīnatarah svayam
2. Then that chief of serpents (Vāsuki), having heard the exceedingly unpleasant news, himself became even more distressed and spoke to his sorrowful sister.
जानासि भद्रे यत्कार्यं प्रदाने कारणं च यत् ।
पन्नगानां हितार्थाय पुत्रस्ते स्यात्ततो यदि ॥३॥
3. jānāsi bhadre yatkāryaṁ pradāne kāraṇaṁ ca yat ,
pannagānāṁ hitārthāya putraste syāttato yadi.
3. jānāsi bhadre yat kāryam pradāne kāraṇam ca yat
pannagānām hitārthāya putraḥ te syāt tataḥ yadi
3. O auspicious lady, you know what purpose and what reason there is regarding the granting of boons. (It is said that) if your son is born from that (boon) for the welfare of the serpents...
स सर्पसत्रात्किल नो मोक्षयिष्यति वीर्यवान् ।
एवं पितामहः पूर्वमुक्तवान्मां सुरैः सह ॥४॥
4. sa sarpasatrātkila no mokṣayiṣyati vīryavān ,
evaṁ pitāmahaḥ pūrvamuktavānmāṁ suraiḥ saha.
4. sa sarpa-satrāt kila naḥ mokṣayiṣyati vīryavān
evam pitāmahaḥ pūrvam uktavān mām suraiḥ saha
4. Indeed, that valiant one will liberate us from the serpent sacrifice. Thus, the Grandfather (Brahmā) previously told me along with the gods.
अप्यस्ति गर्भः सुभगे तस्मात्ते मुनिसत्तमात् ।
न चेच्छाम्यफलं तस्य दारकर्म मनीषिणः ॥५॥
5. apyasti garbhaḥ subhage tasmātte munisattamāt ,
na cecchāmyaphalaṁ tasya dārakarma manīṣiṇaḥ.
5. api asti garbhaḥ subhage tasmāt te muni-sattamāt
na ca icchāmi aphalam tasya dāra-karma manīṣiṇaḥ
5. O auspicious lady, is there a pregnancy from that best of sages, your (husband)? I do not wish his marriage to be fruitless.
कामं च मम न न्याय्यं प्रष्टुं त्वां कार्यमीदृशम् ।
किं तु कार्यगरीयस्त्वात्ततस्त्वाहमचूचुदम् ॥६॥
6. kāmaṁ ca mama na nyāyyaṁ praṣṭuṁ tvāṁ kāryamīdṛśam ,
kiṁ tu kāryagarīyastvāttatastvāhamacūcudam.
6. kāmam ca mama na nyāyyam praṣṭum tvām kāryam īdṛśam
kim tu kārya-garīyastvāt tataḥ tvām aham acūcudam
6. It is certainly not proper for me to ask you such a (private) matter. But because of the gravity of this task, I have urged you (to speak).
दुर्वासतां विदित्वा च भर्तुस्तेऽतितपस्विनः ।
नैनमन्वागमिष्यामि कदाचिद्धि शपेत्स माम् ॥७॥
7. durvāsatāṁ viditvā ca bhartuste'titapasvinaḥ ,
nainamanvāgamiṣyāmi kadāciddhi śapetsa mām.
7. durvāsastām viditvā ca bhartuḥ te ati-tapasvinaḥ
na enam anvāgamiṣyāmi kadācit hi śapet saḥ mām
7. And having known the ill-temper of the extremely ascetic husband, (I tell you) I will never follow him, for indeed, he might curse me.
आचक्ष्व भद्रे भर्तुस्त्वं सर्वमेव विचेष्टितम् ।
शल्यमुद्धर मे घोरं भद्रे हृदि चिरस्थितम् ॥८॥
8. ācakṣva bhadre bhartustvaṁ sarvameva viceṣṭitam ,
śalyamuddhara me ghoraṁ bhadre hṛdi cirasthitam.
8. ācakṣva bhadre bhartuḥ tvam sarvam eva viceṣṭitam
śalyam uddhara me ghoram bhadre hṛdi cirasthitam
8. O good lady, please recount to me all the deeds of your husband. O good lady, extract from my heart this terrible dart that has long remained there.
जरत्कारुस्ततो वाक्यमित्युक्ता प्रत्यभाषत ।
आश्वासयन्ती संतप्तं वासुकिं पन्नगेश्वरम् ॥९॥
9. jaratkārustato vākyamityuktā pratyabhāṣata ,
āśvāsayantī saṁtaptaṁ vāsukiṁ pannageśvaram.
9. jaratkāruḥ tataḥ vākyam iti uktā prati abhāṣata
āśvāsayantī santaptam vāsukim pannageśvaram
9. Jaratkaru, thus addressed, then replied, comforting Vasuki, the tormented lord of serpents.
पृष्टो मयापत्यहेतोः स महात्मा महातपाः ।
अस्तीत्युदरमुद्दिश्य ममेदं गतवांश्च सः ॥१०॥
10. pṛṣṭo mayāpatyahetoḥ sa mahātmā mahātapāḥ ,
astītyudaramuddiśya mamedaṁ gatavāṁśca saḥ.
10. pṛṣṭaḥ mayā apatyahetoḥ saḥ mahātmā mahātapāḥ
asti iti udaram uddiśya mama idam gatavān ca saḥ
10. When I questioned that great-souled, highly ascetic sage about progeny, he, pointing to this belly of mine, said, 'It exists,' and then departed.
स्वैरेष्वपि न तेनाहं स्मरामि वितथं क्वचित् ।
उक्तपूर्वं कुतो राजन्सांपराये स वक्ष्यति ॥११॥
11. svaireṣvapi na tenāhaṁ smarāmi vitathaṁ kvacit ,
uktapūrvaṁ kuto rājansāṁparāye sa vakṣyati.
11. svaireṣu api na tena aham smarāmi vitatham kvacit
uktapūrvam kutaḥ rājan sāṁparāye saḥ vakṣyati
11. Even in moments of relaxation, I do not remember him ever speaking a lie. Therefore, O King, how could he speak falsely in a crucial matter?
न संतापस्त्वया कार्यः कार्यं प्रति भुजंगमे ।
उत्पत्स्यति हि ते पुत्रो ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः ॥१२॥
12. na saṁtāpastvayā kāryaḥ kāryaṁ prati bhujaṁgame ,
utpatsyati hi te putro jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ.
12. na saṁtāpaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ kāryam prati bhujaṅgame
utpatsyati hi te putraḥ jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ
12. O serpent, you should not feel any distress regarding this matter. For indeed, a son will be born to you, radiant like fire and the sun.
इत्युक्त्वा हि स मां भ्रातर्गतो भर्ता तपोवनम् ।
तस्माद्व्येतु परं दुःखं तवेदं मनसि स्थितम् ॥१३॥
13. ityuktvā hi sa māṁ bhrātargato bhartā tapovanam ,
tasmādvyetu paraṁ duḥkhaṁ tavedaṁ manasi sthitam.
13. iti uktvā hi sa mām bhrātaḥ gataḥ bhartā tapovanam
tasmāt vyetu param duḥkham tava idam manasi sthitam
13. Indeed, O brother, after telling me this, my husband went to the hermitage. Therefore, let this deep sorrow that dwells in your mind depart.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स नागेन्द्रो वासुकिः परया मुदा ।
एवमस्त्विति तद्वाक्यं भगिन्याः प्रत्यगृह्णत ॥१४॥
14. etacchrutvā sa nāgendro vāsukiḥ parayā mudā ,
evamastviti tadvākyaṁ bhaginyāḥ pratyagṛhṇata.
14. etat śrutvā sa nāga-indraḥ vāsukiḥ parayā mudā
evam astu iti tat vākyam bhaginyāḥ prati-agṛhṇata
14. Upon hearing this, Vasuki, the king of serpents, with supreme joy, accepted his sister's words, saying, 'So be it!'
सान्त्वमानार्थदानैश्च पूजया चानुरूपया ।
सोदर्यां पूजयामास स्वसारं पन्नगोत्तमः ॥१५॥
15. sāntvamānārthadānaiśca pūjayā cānurūpayā ,
sodaryāṁ pūjayāmāsa svasāraṁ pannagottamaḥ.
15. sāntva-māna-artha-dānaiḥ ca pūjayā ca anurūpayā
sodaryām pūjayām āsa svasāram pannaga-uttamaḥ
15. The foremost of serpents honored his own sister with comforting words, respect, and gifts of wealth, as well as with fitting adoration.
ततः स ववृधे गर्भो महातेजा रविप्रभः ।
यथा सोमो द्विजश्रेष्ठ शुक्लपक्षोदितो दिवि ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ sa vavṛdhe garbho mahātejā raviprabhaḥ ,
yathā somo dvijaśreṣṭha śuklapakṣodito divi.
16. tataḥ sa vavṛdhe garbhaḥ mahā-tejāḥ ravi-prabhaḥ
yathā somaḥ dvija-śreṣṭha śukla-pakṣa-uditaḥ divi
16. Then, O best of brahmins, that greatly radiant embryo, shining like the sun, grew, just as the moon appears in the bright fortnight in the sky.
यथाकालं तु सा ब्रह्मन्प्रजज्ञे भुजगस्वसा ।
कुमारं देवगर्भाभं पितृमातृभयापहम् ॥१७॥
17. yathākālaṁ tu sā brahmanprajajñe bhujagasvasā ,
kumāraṁ devagarbhābhaṁ pitṛmātṛbhayāpaham.
17. yathā-kālam tu sā brahman prajajñe bhujaga-svasā
kumāram deva-garbha-ābham pitṛ-mātṛ-bhaya-apaham
17. O Brahmin, in due course, the serpent's sister gave birth to a son, who resembled a divine child and removed the fears of his father and mother.
ववृधे स च तत्रैव नागराजनिवेशने ।
वेदांश्चाधिजगे साङ्गान्भार्गवाच्च्यवनात्मजात् ॥१८॥
18. vavṛdhe sa ca tatraiva nāgarājaniveśane ,
vedāṁścādhijage sāṅgānbhārgavāccyavanātmajāt.
18. vavṛdhe sa ca tatra eva nāgarājaniveśane vedān
ca adhijage sāṅgān bhārgavāt cyavanātmajāt
18. He grew up right there in the abode of the Naga king. From Cyavana's son, the descendant of Bhṛgu, he learned the Vedas along with their auxiliary sciences.
चरितव्रतो बाल एव बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्वितः ।
नाम चास्याभवत्ख्यातं लोकेष्वास्तीक इत्युत ॥१९॥
19. caritavrato bāla eva buddhisattvaguṇānvitaḥ ,
nāma cāsyābhavatkhyātaṁ lokeṣvāstīka ityuta.
19. caritavrataḥ bālaḥ eva buddhisattvaguṇānvitaḥ nāma
ca asya abhavat khyātam lokeṣu āstīkaḥ iti uta
19. Even as a child, having completed his vows and endowed with intelligence and goodness, his name became famous in the worlds as 'Āstīka'.
अस्तीत्युक्त्वा गतो यस्मात्पिता गर्भस्थमेव तम् ।
वनं तस्मादिदं तस्य नामास्तीकेति विश्रुतम् ॥२०॥
20. astītyuktvā gato yasmātpitā garbhasthameva tam ,
vanaṁ tasmādidaṁ tasya nāmāstīketi viśrutam.
20. asti iti uktvā gataḥ yasmāt pitā garbhastham eva tam
vanam tasmāt idam tasya nāma āstīkaḥ iti viśrutam
20. Because his father went away to the forest after saying "asti" (he exists) to him while he was still in the womb, therefore this name 'Āstīka' became famous for him.
स बाल एव तत्रस्थश्चरन्नमितबुद्धिमान् ।
गृहे पन्नगराजस्य प्रयत्नात्पर्यरक्ष्यत ॥२१॥
21. sa bāla eva tatrasthaścarannamitabuddhimān ,
gṛhe pannagarājasya prayatnātparyarakṣyata.
21. saḥ bālaḥ eva tatrasthaḥ caran amitabuddhimān
gṛhe pannagarājasya prayatnāt paryarakṣyata
21. He, remaining there as a child, wandering about, possessed of immeasurable intelligence, was carefully protected in the house of the Naga king.
भगवानिव देवेशः शूलपाणिर्हिरण्यदः ।
विवर्धमानः सर्वांस्तान्पन्नगानभ्यहर्षयत् ॥२२॥
22. bhagavāniva deveśaḥ śūlapāṇirhiraṇyadaḥ ,
vivardhamānaḥ sarvāṁstānpannagānabhyaharṣayat.
22. bhagavān iva deveśaḥ śūlapāṇiḥ hiraṇyadaḥ
vivardhamānaḥ sarvān tān pannagān abhyaharṣayat
22. Growing up like the divine lord Śūlapāṇi, the giver of gold, he delighted all those serpents.
