गालव उवाच ।
महावीर्यो महीपालः काशीनामीश्वरः प्रभुः ।
दिवोदास इति ख्यातो भैमसेनिर्नराधिपः ॥१॥
1. gālava uvāca ,
mahāvīryo mahīpālaḥ kāśīnāmīśvaraḥ prabhuḥ ,
divodāsa iti khyāto bhaimasenirnarādhipaḥ.
1. gālavaḥ uvāca mahāvīryaḥ mahīpālaḥ kāśīnām īśvaraḥ
prabhuḥ divodāsaḥ iti khyātaḥ bhīmaseniḥ narādhipaḥ
1. Gālava said: "There is a very powerful king, the lord and ruler of Kāśī, known as Divodāsa, the son of Bhīmasena, a sovereign among men."
तत्र गच्छावहे भद्रे शनैरागच्छ मा शुचः ।
धार्मिकः संयमे युक्तः सत्यश्चैव जनेश्वरः ॥२॥
2. tatra gacchāvahe bhadre śanairāgaccha mā śucaḥ ,
dhārmikaḥ saṁyame yuktaḥ satyaścaiva janeśvaraḥ.
2. tatra gacchāvahe bhadre śanaiḥ āgaccha mā śucaḥ
dhārmikaḥ saṃyame yuktaḥ satyaḥ ca eva janeswarah
2. O graceful one, let us go there. Come along slowly; do not grieve. That ruler of men is righteous (dharma), dedicated to self-restraint, and indeed truthful.
नारद उवाच ।
तमुपागम्य स मुनिर्न्यायतस्तेन सत्कृतः ।
गालवः प्रसवस्यार्थे तं नृपं प्रत्यचोदयत् ॥३॥
3. nārada uvāca ,
tamupāgamya sa munirnyāyatastena satkṛtaḥ ,
gālavaḥ prasavasyārthe taṁ nṛpaṁ pratyacodayat.
3. nāradaḥ uvāca tam upāgamya saḥ muniḥ nyāyataḥ tena
satskṛtaḥ gālavaḥ prasavasya arthe tam nṛpam pratyacodayat
3. Nārada said: "Having approached him, that sage was duly honored by the king. Gālava then urged that king concerning the matter of progeny."
दिवोदास उवाच ।
श्रुतमेतन्मया पूर्वं किमुक्त्वा विस्तरं द्विज ।
काङ्क्षितो हि मयैषोऽर्थः श्रुत्वैतद्द्विजसत्तम ॥४॥
4. divodāsa uvāca ,
śrutametanmayā pūrvaṁ kimuktvā vistaraṁ dvija ,
kāṅkṣito hi mayaiṣo'rthaḥ śrutvaitaddvijasattama.
4. divodāsaḥ uvāca śrutam etad mayā pūrvam kim uktvā vistaram
dvija kāṅkṣitaḥ hi mayā eṣaḥ arthaḥ śrutvā etad dvijasattama
4. Divodāsa said: "I have heard this before. What is the point of speaking at length, O brahmin (dvija)? Indeed, this very purpose is desired by me, having heard this, O best among brahmins (dvijasattama)."
एतच्च मे बहुमतं यदुत्सृज्य नराधिपान् ।
मामेवमुपयातोऽसि भावि चैतदसंशयम् ॥५॥
5. etacca me bahumataṁ yadutsṛjya narādhipān ,
māmevamupayāto'si bhāvi caitadasaṁśayam.
5. etat ca me bahumatam yat utsṛjya narādhipān
mām evam upayātaḥ asi bhāvi ca etat asaṃśayam
5. And this is highly regarded by me: that having abandoned other kings, you have thus approached me. This will undoubtedly come to pass.
स एव विभवोऽस्माकमश्वानामपि गालव ।
अहमप्येकमेवास्यां जनयिष्यामि पार्थिवम् ॥६॥
6. sa eva vibhavo'smākamaśvānāmapi gālava ,
ahamapyekamevāsyāṁ janayiṣyāmi pārthivam.
6. saḥ eva vibhavaḥ asmākam aśvānām api gālava
aham api ekam eva asyām janayiṣyāmi pārthivam
6. That indeed is our (shared) resource, even for horses, O Galava. And I myself will surely produce just one king in her.
नारद उवाच ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठः प्रादात्कन्यां महीपतेः ।
विधिपूर्वं च तां राजा कन्यां प्रतिगृहीतवान् ॥७॥
7. nārada uvāca ,
tathetyuktvā dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ prādātkanyāṁ mahīpateḥ ,
vidhipūrvaṁ ca tāṁ rājā kanyāṁ pratigṛhītavān.
7. nāradaḥ uvāca tathā iti uktvā dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ prādāt kanyām
mahīpateḥ vidhipūrvam ca tām rājā kanyām pratigṛhītavān
7. Narada said: Having agreed with 'So be it', the foremost among the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭha) gave the maiden to the king. And the king, in accordance with ritual (vidhi), accepted that maiden.
रेमे स तस्यां राजर्षिः प्रभावत्यां यथा रविः ।
स्वाहायां च यथा वह्निर्यथा शच्यां स वासवः ॥८॥
8. reme sa tasyāṁ rājarṣiḥ prabhāvatyāṁ yathā raviḥ ,
svāhāyāṁ ca yathā vahniryathā śacyāṁ sa vāsavaḥ.
8. reme saḥ tasyām rājarṣiḥ prabhāvatyām yathā raviḥ
svāhāyām ca yathā vahniḥ yathā śacyām saḥ vāsavaḥ
8. That royal sage (rājarṣi) enjoyed himself with her, Prabhāvatī, just as the sun (ravi) delights. And just as fire (vahni) with Svāhā, and as Indra (Vāsava) with Śacī, so did he.
यथा चन्द्रश्च रोहिण्यां यथा धूमोर्णया यमः ।
वरुणश्च यथा गौर्यां यथा चर्द्ध्यां धनेश्वरः ॥९॥
9. yathā candraśca rohiṇyāṁ yathā dhūmorṇayā yamaḥ ,
varuṇaśca yathā gauryāṁ yathā carddhyāṁ dhaneśvaraḥ.
9. yathā candraḥ ca rohiṇyām yathā dhūmorṇayā yamaḥ
varuṇaḥ ca yathā gauryām yathā ca ṛddhyām dhaneśvaraḥ
9. Just as the Moon is with Rohiṇī, and Yama is with Dhūmorṇā, similarly Varuṇa is with Gaurī, and Dhaneśvara (Kubera) is with Ṛddhi.
यथा नारायणो लक्ष्म्यां जाह्नव्यां च यथोदधिः ।
यथा रुद्रश्च रुद्राण्यां यथा वेद्यां पितामहः ॥१०॥
10. yathā nārāyaṇo lakṣmyāṁ jāhnavyāṁ ca yathodadhiḥ ,
yathā rudraśca rudrāṇyāṁ yathā vedyāṁ pitāmahaḥ.
10. yathā nārāyaṇaḥ lakṣmyām jāhnavyām ca yathā udadhiḥ
yathā rudraḥ ca rudrāṇyām yathā vedyām pitāmahaḥ
10. Just as Nārāyaṇa is with Lakṣmī, and the ocean is with Jāhnavī, similarly Rudra is with Rudrāṇī, and Pitāmaha (Brahmā) is with Vedī.
अदृश्यन्त्यां च वासिष्ठो वसिष्ठश्चाक्षमालया ।
च्यवनश्च सुकन्यायां पुलस्त्यः संध्यया यथा ॥११॥
11. adṛśyantyāṁ ca vāsiṣṭho vasiṣṭhaścākṣamālayā ,
cyavanaśca sukanyāyāṁ pulastyaḥ saṁdhyayā yathā.
11. adṛśyantyām ca vāsiṣṭhaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ ca akṣamālayā
cyavanaḥ ca sukanyāyām pulastyaḥ saṃdhyayā yathā
11. And just as Vāsiṣṭha is with Adṛśyantī, and Vasiṣṭha is with Akṣamālā, just as Cyavana is with Sukanyā, and Pulastya is with Sandhyā.
अगस्त्यश्चापि वैदर्भ्यां सावित्र्यां सत्यवान्यथा ।
यथा भृगुः पुलोमायामदित्यां कश्यपो यथा ॥१२॥
12. agastyaścāpi vaidarbhyāṁ sāvitryāṁ satyavānyathā ,
yathā bhṛguḥ pulomāyāmadityāṁ kaśyapo yathā.
12. agastyaḥ ca api vaidarbhyām sāvitryām satyavān
yathā yathā bhṛguḥ pulomāyām adityām kaśyapaḥ yathā
12. And just as Agastya is with Vaidarbhī, and Satyavān is with Sāvitrī, just as Bhṛgu is with Pulomā, and Kaśyapa is with Aditi.
रेणुकायां यथार्चीको हैमवत्यां च कौशिकः ।
बृहस्पतिश्च तारायां शुक्रश्च शतपर्वया ॥१३॥
13. reṇukāyāṁ yathārcīko haimavatyāṁ ca kauśikaḥ ,
bṛhaspatiśca tārāyāṁ śukraśca śataparvayā.
13. reṇukāyām yathā ṛcīkaḥ haimavatyām ca kauśikaḥ
bṛhaspatiḥ ca tārāyām śukraḥ ca śataparvayā
13. Just as Ṛcīka was with Reṇukā, and Kauśika with Haimavatī (Pārvatī), and Bṛhaspati with Tārā, and Śukra with Śataparvā.
यथा भूम्यां भूमिपतिरुर्वश्यां च पुरूरवाः ।
ऋचीकः सत्यवत्यां च सरस्वत्यां यथा मनुः ॥१४॥
14. yathā bhūmyāṁ bhūmipatirurvaśyāṁ ca purūravāḥ ,
ṛcīkaḥ satyavatyāṁ ca sarasvatyāṁ yathā manuḥ.
14. yathā bhūmyām bhūmipatiḥ urvaśyām ca purūravāḥ
ṛcīkaḥ satyavatyām ca sarasvatyām yathā manuḥ
14. Just as the king was with the Earth (Bhūmī), and Purūravas with Urvaśī; Ṛcīka with Satyavatī, and Manu with Sarasvatī.
तथा तु रममाणस्य दिवोदासस्य भूपतेः ।
माधवी जनयामास पुत्रमेकं प्रतर्दनम् ॥१५॥
15. tathā tu ramamāṇasya divodāsasya bhūpateḥ ,
mādhavī janayāmāsa putramekaṁ pratardanam.
15. tathā tu ramamāṇasya divodāsasya bhūpateḥ
mādhvī janayāmāsa putram ekam pratardanam
15. Similarly, of King Divodāsa, who was delighting (in conjugal bliss), Mādhavī gave birth to one son, Pratardana.
अथाजगाम भगवान्दिवोदासं स गालवः ।
समये समनुप्राप्ते वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. athājagāma bhagavāndivodāsaṁ sa gālavaḥ ,
samaye samanuprāpte vacanaṁ cedamabravīt.
16. atha ājagāma bhagavān divodāsam sa gālavaḥ
samaye samanuprapte vacanam ca idam abravīt
16. Then, the venerable Gālava came to Divodāsa. When the appointed time arrived, he spoke these words.
निर्यातयतु मे कन्यां भवांस्तिष्ठन्तु वाजिनः ।
यावदन्यत्र गच्छामि शुल्कार्थं पृथिवीपते ॥१७॥
17. niryātayatu me kanyāṁ bhavāṁstiṣṭhantu vājinaḥ ,
yāvadanyatra gacchāmi śulkārthaṁ pṛthivīpate.
17. niryātayatu me kanyām bhavān tiṣṭhantu vājinaḥ
yāvat anyatra gacchāmi śulkārtham pṛthivīpate
17. O King, your honor should return my daughter to me. Let the horses remain [with you], while I go elsewhere to acquire the bride-price.
दिवोदासोऽथ धर्मात्मा समये गालवस्य ताम् ।
कन्यां निर्यातयामास स्थितः सत्ये महीपतिः ॥१८॥
18. divodāso'tha dharmātmā samaye gālavasya tām ,
kanyāṁ niryātayāmāsa sthitaḥ satye mahīpatiḥ.
18. divodāsaḥ atha dharmātmā samaye gālavasya tām
kanyām niryātayāmāsa sthitaḥ satye mahīpatiḥ
18. Then, King Divodāsa, whose soul was dedicated to righteousness (dharma), abiding by truth (satye), returned that daughter of Gālava at the agreed time.
