ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
नाहं तथा भीरु चरामि लोके तथा त्वं मां तर्कयसे स्वबुद्ध्या ।
विप्रोऽस्मि मुक्तोऽस्मि वनेचरोऽस्मि गृहस्थधर्मा ब्रह्मचारी तथास्मि ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
nāhaṁ tathā bhīru carāmi loke; tathā tvaṁ māṁ tarkayase svabuddhyā ,
vipro'smi mukto'smi vanecaro'smi; gṛhasthadharmā brahmacārī tathāsmi.
1. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca na aham tathā bhīru carāmi
loke tathā tvam mām tarkayase svabuddhyā
vipraḥ asmi muktaḥ asmi vanecaraḥ
asmi gṛhasthadharmā brahmacārī tathā asmi
1. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca he bhīru,
aham loke tathā na carāmi,
tvam svabuddhyā mām tathā tarkayase.
aham vipraḥ asmi,
muktaḥ asmi,
vanecaraḥ asmi,
gṛhasthadharmā asmi,
tathā brahmacārī asmi.
1. The brahmin said: "I do not move about the world in such a fearful manner as you surmise me to be, based on your own understanding. I am a brahmin (vipra), I am liberated (mukta), I am a forest-dweller, and I also follow the natural law (dharma) of a householder, and I am a celibate student (brahmacārī)."
नाहमस्मि यथा मां त्वं पश्यसे चक्षुषा शुभे ।
मया व्याप्तमिदं सर्वं यत्किंचिज्जगतीगतम् ॥२॥
2. nāhamasmi yathā māṁ tvaṁ paśyase cakṣuṣā śubhe ,
mayā vyāptamidaṁ sarvaṁ yatkiṁcijjagatīgatam.
2. na aham asmi yathā mām tvam paśyase cakṣuṣā śubhe
| mayā vyāptam idam sarvam yatkiñcit jagatīgatam
2. he śubhe! tvam cakṣuṣā mām yathā paśyase,
aham na asmi.
mayā idam sarvam yatkiñcit jagatīgatam vyāptam.
2. O beautiful one, I am not as you perceive me with your eye. Everything in this world, whatever exists, is pervaded by me.
ये केचिज्जन्तवो लोके जङ्गमाः स्थावराश्च ह ।
तेषां मामन्तकं विद्धि दारूणामिव पावकम् ॥३॥
3. ye kecijjantavo loke jaṅgamāḥ sthāvarāśca ha ,
teṣāṁ māmantakaṁ viddhi dārūṇāmiva pāvakam.
3. ye kecit jantavaḥ loke jaṅgamāḥ sthāvarāḥ ca ha
| teṣām mām antakam viddhi dārūṇām iva pāvakam
3. loike ye kecit jaṅgamāḥ ca ha sthāvarāḥ जन्तवः (सन्ति),
तेषाम् माम् अन्तकम् दारूणाम् इव पावकम् विद्धि।
3. Know me to be the destroyer of all beings in the world, whether moving or stationary, just as fire consumes wood.
राज्यं पृथिव्यां सर्वस्यामथ वापि त्रिविष्टपे ।
तथा बुद्धिरियं वेत्ति बुद्धिरेव धनं मम ॥४॥
4. rājyaṁ pṛthivyāṁ sarvasyāmatha vāpi triviṣṭape ,
tathā buddhiriyaṁ vetti buddhireva dhanaṁ mama.
4. rājyam pṛthivyām sarvasyām atha vā api triviṣṭape
| tathā buddhiḥ iyam vetti buddhiḥ eva dhanam mama
4. iyam buddhiḥ pṛthivyām sarvasyām atha vā api triviṣṭape rājyam tathā vetti.
buddhiḥ eva mama dhanam.
4. My intellect perceives dominion over the entire earth, or even in the three heavens (triviṣṭapa). Thus, intellect alone is my wealth.
एकः पन्था ब्राह्मणानां येन गच्छन्ति तद्विदः ।
गृहेषु वनवासेषु गुरुवासेषु भिक्षुषु ।
लिङ्गैर्बहुभिरव्यग्रैरेका बुद्धिरुपास्यते ॥५॥
5. ekaḥ panthā brāhmaṇānāṁ yena gacchanti tadvidaḥ ,
gṛheṣu vanavāseṣu guruvāseṣu bhikṣuṣu ,
liṅgairbahubhiravyagrairekā buddhirupāsyate.
5. ekaḥ panthā brāhmaṇānāṃ yena
gacchanti tadvidaḥ gṛheṣu vanavāseṣu
guruvāseṣu bhikṣuṣu liṅgaiḥ bahubhiḥ
avyagraiḥ ekā buddhiḥ upāsyate
5. tadvidaḥ brāhmaṇānāṃ yena ekaḥ panthā gacchanti.
ekā avyagraiḥ buddhiḥ bahubhiḥ liṅgaiḥ gṛheṣu vanavāseṣu guruvāseṣu bhikṣuṣu upāsyate
5. There is a single path for those who know that ultimate reality (brahman), by which they proceed. This one resolute understanding is pursued through many diverse, unwavering outward forms – whether in households, forest hermitages, with a teacher (guru), or among mendicants.
नानालिङ्गाश्रमस्थानां येषां बुद्धिः शमात्मिका ।
ते भावमेकमायान्ति सरितः सागरं यथा ॥६॥
6. nānāliṅgāśramasthānāṁ yeṣāṁ buddhiḥ śamātmikā ,
te bhāvamekamāyānti saritaḥ sāgaraṁ yathā.
6. nānāliṅgāśramasthānāṃ yeṣāṃ buddhiḥ śamātmikā
te bhāvam ekam āyānti saritaḥ sāgaraṃ yathā
6. yeṣāṃ nānāliṅgāśramasthānāṃ buddhiḥ śamātmikā
te ekam bhāvam āyānti yathā saritaḥ sāgaraṃ
6. Those whose understanding is characterized by tranquility, despite being situated in various outward forms and stages of life (āśrama), achieve a single state of being, just as rivers merge into the ocean.
बुद्ध्यायं गम्यते मार्गः शरीरेण न गम्यते ।
आद्यन्तवन्ति कर्माणि शरीरं कर्मबन्धनम् ॥७॥
7. buddhyāyaṁ gamyate mārgaḥ śarīreṇa na gamyate ,
ādyantavanti karmāṇi śarīraṁ karmabandhanam.
7. buddhyā ayam gamyate mārgaḥ śarīreṇa na gamyate
ādyantavanti karmāṇi śarīraṃ karmabandhanam
7. ayam mārgaḥ buddhyā gamyate,
śarīreṇa na gamyate.
karmāṇi ādyantavanti.
śarīraṃ karmabandhanam
7. This path is approached through understanding, not through the physical body. All actions (karma) have a beginning and an end; the body itself is a bond of action (karma).
तस्मात्ते सुभगे नास्ति परलोककृतं भयम् ।
मद्भावभावनिरता ममैवात्मानमेष्यसि ॥८॥
8. tasmātte subhage nāsti paralokakṛtaṁ bhayam ,
madbhāvabhāvaniratā mamaivātmānameṣyasi.
8. tasmāt te subhage na asti paralokakṛtaṃ bhayam
matbhāvabhāvaniratā mama eva ātmānam eṣyasi
8. tasmāt subhage te paralokakṛtaṃ bhayam na asti.
matbhāvabhāvaniratā mama eva ātmānam eṣyasi
8. Therefore, O blessed one, you have no fear concerning the afterlife. Absorbed in the contemplation of My divine nature, you will surely attain My very own self (ātman).
